Speaker 1: Hey, everyone, welcome back to About your Happy Hour.

00:00:04
Speaker 2: I'm Joe and I'm Serena, and.

00:00:05
Speaker 1: We are here with the first Rose. First Impression Rose recipient Keys.

00:00:12
Speaker 2: Oh my god, you almost forgot the name.

00:00:16
Speaker 3: Let me help you out, Joe case. You haven't been on the show before. It's called a first impression Rose, but Hi, hey.

00:00:20
Speaker 1: You go, hey, you go, that's that's a big that's a big Uh, that's a big thing to get night one. Did you were you aware of that going into it?

00:00:29
Speaker 3: Oh? Yeah, I've been watching the show for I don't know. Tristan Ryan are Might's still my favorite couple ever. I think that's a lot of people, right, But you know, over the years, I've watched a ton of episodes, so you know, the first impression Rows. It was set on the table. It's pretty hilarious. Everybody's like, what's this? What's this? And I'm kind of like, uh, it's called a first impression Rose. And I bet you ninety percent of the guys that had no clue what a first impression Rose was.

00:00:54
Speaker 1: Really, they were all calling you Superman super fan.

00:00:56
Speaker 3: I heard yeah, yeah, Jordan, I was there's a guy named Jordan Good but yeah, he called he called me fanboy first, you know, right there, he's like, hey, fanboy, what's up. I'm like, shut up.

00:01:06
Speaker 1: Well, you know what, it worked out because you got the first and pressure rows.

00:01:10
Speaker 4: And we do say when people go on this show, it's good to go on with a little background knowledge of what you're getting yourself into.

00:01:17
Speaker 3: Yeah. Oh yeah, no, uh you know. So, you know, just meeting the guys the first night, you're sitting around the bar, you're talking, you know, you're waiting for your time with Joan whatever. And I was asking guys who had watched or who hadn't watched, and yeah, definitely, I you know, I've watched way more of these things than than anybody else, that's for sure.

00:01:37
Speaker 1: Yeah. To me, it's it's it's kind of crazy to agree to go on reality television and do zero research, Like you need to do a little bit of prep.

00:01:48
Speaker 3: Yeah, Like one guy, I was talking to one guy that night and he was like, yeah, I watched like four or five episodes of The Golden Bachelor, Like okay, well at least you have some idea, got something.

00:02:00
Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, that that were that plays. So let's let's take it back to the beginning. How did you wind up on this show.

00:02:10
Speaker 3: I volunteered, uh so a long time ago. I don't know. I had a friend and she was probably twenty six at the time, and I was trying to get her on the show. It's like, hey, you got to go on this show. So, you know, she moved away and she called me like when the Golden Bacher came out, she said, hey, you got you need to sign up, like you got to be sixty five. I wasn't sixty five at all. And but then when the Golden Bacher came out and I saw the people were sixty I was like, you know the final episode after the final rows happened on Gary season and Glass of Wine and uh, you know the application later, I was all set, you know, last November and put my uh put my application in so I so again, you know, a lot happened around the bar when you're talking, and you know when you first get there. I think I was the only guy that probably volunteered. Most of the people family members, daughters, you know, sisters, whatever, you know, they were, they were volunteering their uh you know, these guys to be on. But yeah, I volunteered myself.

00:03:10
Speaker 1: And you have you have three daughters.

00:03:12
Speaker 3: Correct, Oh yeah, yeah.

00:03:14
Speaker 1: Did they know about you volunteering when you did it at first?

00:03:18
Speaker 3: Oh? Yeah yeah. When I'm filling it out, I actually called Ryan, my oldest, and I was telling and I was asking her like, hey, this is what I'm putting down, and she was coaching me, and I thought some of her answers were stupid, so I said, no, I'm now I'm gonna do this myself. But all three of the all three of them were totally stoked. They were like, you got to be kidding me, Dad, But there they were totally stoked I was doing this.

00:03:40
Speaker 2: Did they plan anything for the premiere episode to celebrate?

00:03:44
Speaker 3: So my oldest one, she lives in LA and she, uh, last night she had to look for a bigger apartment to do it, and she just had a bunch of h friends coming over. Uh. I've got my middle daughter, Anika, she's up in Chico. She last night she had a bunch of kids over in their living room. You know, my text was blown up after the show and then my youngest one she was with me and it's just here. I was going to do a big party, two hundred and three hundred people, you know, get a venue, type thing, and I just decided, no, I wanted to watch it. I wanted to see it because I'm pretty excited. I just wanted to my attention to be on the show itself. So just be and ten of my closest friends.

00:04:27
Speaker 1: What what what do your girls think of Joan Oh?

00:04:32
Speaker 3: Totally excited when they found out when it was going to be Joan Oh. She had the style points clothing, you know, first night I even told Joan I said, hey, you know, there's a lot of pressure here on you that you know, my daughters followed you on Instagram whatever you said, your clothing, your style points are way high, so you've got lots to live up to here. But they thought she was you know, they just liked her. They liked what she was about. They thought she was beautiful.

00:05:05
Speaker 1: And you're Keith. You're in San.

00:05:07
Speaker 3: Jose, Yeah, northern California or San Jose.

00:05:10
Speaker 1: Is that where you're from?

00:05:11
Speaker 3: No? I originally small town Indiana, Columbus, Indiana that I've been out here for thirty odd years, forty years.

00:05:19
Speaker 1: Yeah, you have a deeper Midwestern accent. That makes sense, that makes sense.

00:05:25
Speaker 3: What and what do you what do you do for you're you're you're a good You're a good Midwestern guy too. You know, I lived in Chicago for a year and a half. It's a it's all. If I could take Chicago, seriously, if I could take Chicago and put it in warm weather, best city, best city I ever lived in.

00:05:39
Speaker 1: Yeah, it's just too it's just too goddamn.

00:05:41
Speaker 2: The planters are just so cold.

00:05:44
Speaker 1: Yeah, Keith, what what do you do for a living or what did you do?

00:05:48
Speaker 3: Oh? Right now, I'm still working. I'm just a sales director fiber optic company.

00:05:53
Speaker 4: Uh.

00:05:54
Speaker 3: Yeah, I've been in the industry for thirty years, you know, this company, four or five just selling.

00:06:01
Speaker 4: And you said your girls were really excited that it was going to be Joan. What did you think of Joan going into the season, Like, is she your type?

00:06:10
Speaker 3: She's like, oh, totally my type. You know. The one thing I couldn't find out was how tall she was, so I kept looking back on the old episodes to see how tall she was compared to Gary and check out her heels to see what she was wearing. But yeah, blonde hair, blue eye, you know, great smile, totally in my wheelhouse.

00:06:35
Speaker 1: Yeah, what was the last time you went on a date.

00:06:41
Speaker 2: Before you went on the show.

00:06:42
Speaker 3: Yeah, probably months before a few months before I went on the show. Say, once I applied on the show, I kind of stopped, I don't know, thinking about dating or I didn't date much after I applayed for the show. And I just, you know, I don't know if I was just concentrating on you know, work and kids, it's family whatever, but I'm just seeing where this went. But yeah, I just slowed down once I applaied.

00:07:05
Speaker 1: And how would you how would you go about dating before going on the show, Like, did you do like any of the dating apps or anything like that.

00:07:13
Speaker 3: I'm not a big dating app guy. In fact, I've only I hadn't done a dating app probably in like six seven years, mostly just through friends network, getting set up, meeting people outside. You know, I go out a lot. I like going out lots. I just meet people and yeah, but setting up I'm going to say that I've had the best luck when you know within your friend network, you know the people, they know who you are, they know who the friends are, And they said.

00:07:40
Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, I feel like that would be the best way I was. I was never one to like enjoy dating apps. I just found them really difficult.

00:07:49
Speaker 2: Well, you didn't really enjoy dating.

00:07:53
Speaker 3: Dating dating kind of sucks. Just I agree with you. And then the and then I talked to my buddies about dating apps too, and they were like, it's work. You've got you know, once you get home from work and then you've got to go through all the messages and see which one you like. And just like, yeah, I'm lazy, you know, don't I don't need to do that. Let's go out and meet people.

00:08:11
Speaker 1: Yeah, you want, you want to like jump to just like that fourth date when things are getting much more comfortable.

00:08:18
Speaker 2: And then you won't be dating anymore.

00:08:21
Speaker 1: So Keith, we see you pull up and what was it like a station wagon.

00:08:26
Speaker 3: That was the tiniest little freaking station wag. And I said, hey, can we do a station wag? And you know that's how the family vacation, you know, this little gimme thing. I'm just trying to, you know, make an impression. And I get there and it's it's like a mini I don't know, it's the smallest thing. I get out of that thing, I drive up and I'm nervous. Anyway, right here, it's your first time meeting Joan. I'm a pretty confident guy. But you know, it's like any first date. I guess you're you're kind of nervous. But now you've got the mansion, the lights. You know, here's Joan all dulled up in a beautiful gold gown, and I'm trying to get out of this thing and it's just I'm just legs and arms coming out trying to It was a lowrider. I stand up. I'm taller than the car. I bet, I you know, it was only I bet. I couldn't even lay down front to back in there. It was so tiny.

00:09:20
Speaker 2: Oh my gosh. How long were you in it?

00:09:23
Speaker 3: Uh? Not long, I guess just I mean it drove okay, sitting in there was fine. It was just getting in and out. I just got some limbs that had to get out of there, and it was not a big door.

00:09:33
Speaker 2: Not feeling too gray as twelve.

00:09:41
Speaker 4: How was your first impression of Joan when you guys had that first interaction once you crawl out of the station wagon.

00:09:47
Speaker 3: Yeah, so, you know, I drive up and I just see her and she's just beautiful, right, I mean the lights around her, and so I get out. I'm nervous. You know, you plan your words in your head, you know what you want to say, and it never comes out, or maybe it does come out like you want, but you know you're always thinking, man, did I actually say that? Or did I not? But my whole thing was I wanted to bring her back to the car and we're just gonna sit and just talk for a little bit about you know, I don't even know what I was going to talk about. What I prefer to do, you know, instead of being at this mansion. And I'll tell that.

00:10:21
Speaker 1: But all of a sudden, she already try and go off camera. I have an off camera conversation.

00:10:26
Speaker 2: Get away from the mansion. Let's go hang out by the car.

00:10:29
Speaker 1: I did.

00:10:30
Speaker 3: So I got to the car and I was going to have her just sort of lean up or sit up on the hood, and she made it so comfortable. She just plopped up on the hood like it was nothing, just jumped in her heels and I was like wow, and that just that helped right there. I mean, she was just comfortable. She started to make me really comfortable. And then I did, I said, you know what I prefer to do is you know, the mansion has wine, the mansion has cheese and crackers. I believe you know, there was food in there. Let's grab that. Let's head to the beach in our station wagon. Let's tail you know, crack open a bottle of wine and just get to know each other. And well that might seem gimmicky at the time, or you know, ha ha, let's do it, but actually it's true. It's I would rather just have a one on one, just chill, not have the pressure of all the dress up and the mansion and the lights, and let's just go to the ocean and just hang out on the beach.

00:11:19
Speaker 1: Is that a Is that like at this point in your life? Is that it must be by an ocean or by water? Because you say that.

00:11:27
Speaker 3: Yeah, by water. You know, I used to say ocean a lot of time, but then you know, as I get older, you know that that may narrow down my I guess, but yes, but I just like water, you know, be out on a boat on a lake, or you know, you're on the beach, go swimming in the ocean.

00:11:47
Speaker 2: Serena loves water.

00:11:50
Speaker 3: It's so, are you a water sign?

00:11:54
Speaker 2: Yeah? I am a water sign?

00:11:56
Speaker 4: Actually that yeah, I'm a scorpio, which, ironically enough as well.

00:12:06
Speaker 3: Guys, Yeah, sorry, Joe all right.

00:12:08
Speaker 1: Now, we uh one thing we one thing we heard that I thought was it was kind of interesting. A lot of and I think it's just you know, you've experienced a good amount of life. But we heard a few of the guys like I wasn't. I wasn't expecting to be as nervous as I was. And I think it's probably normal to be a little older and think like, yeah, I've talked to many women in my life, Like I've been on many dates, I've been married X amount of years, Like, I'm not going to be nervous having like this first conversation. Were you were you shocked that you were nervous or did you expect to be?

00:12:44
Speaker 3: Well, I expected to be nervous, but I didn't expect to be that nervous. And you know, you've got the TV. You get the TV cameras there, you've got yeah, you know, it's it's it's not just a one on one. You're not picking her up from her house. It's I mean, you've got a mansion there within it's and I you know, my first date, I'm normally in shorts and a polo, I think, and in somewhere casual. Here we are all dressed up and you know, going out for a first date. So it's, uh, yeah, it is nerve wracking. You don't you don't know how nervous you're going to be, and you just have to take a deep breath and just enjoy the moment. I think.

00:13:18
Speaker 4: Yeah, so you walk into the house after your first impression of Joan, how is it with the guys?

00:13:24
Speaker 2: What's the energy? Like, what are people talking about?

00:13:27
Speaker 1: What's your first impression of them?

00:13:28
Speaker 3: Yeah? So yeah, everybody's basically hanging out around the bar, and you look around and your mentality is it's like, this is my competition, But in reality, it's you're not competing against them, you're competing against your I guess, your own ego. It's you're even not competing. It's Joan picking, so it can't even be a competition per se. But you are looking around, going all right, who are these guys? And you pick out you know, I automatically, I was just drawn to like four or five guys. You know, you're just talking. I was leaning up against the bar and all of a sudd and this big guy about six five, white beard, white hair, rolls in right behind me, looking to get a drink. I'm like, dude, I was wondering if you're going to be here, and it was Mark and Kelsey's dad.

00:14:12
Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah, and he was here.

00:14:13
Speaker 3: He's like I was hoping nobody would notice. And I'm like, well, you got the wrong guy. I know.

00:14:19
Speaker 4: Yeah, you're the super fan and Mark, yeah, nicest human being.

00:14:29
Speaker 3: We had the nicest conversation that night. I mean, just a bunch of us did though, too, but uh yeah, it was uh, you know, and then you just start mingling around and you just find you know, you know, guys, what do we takt sports? Uh? Where are you from? Yeah? I don't, I don't know. You just start talking, but it's just a fraternity brother from another college. All of a sudden, you know, you meet him and he just seems he remind you of somebody that was your friend and colleague just and so you just start bonding with these guys and talking about, you know, the superficial stuff. Are you on the show? Are you excited? Are you nervous? You know that type of thing.

00:15:04
Speaker 1: Do you think any of you got any of you guys will like take a trip together or anything like that in the future.

00:15:10
Speaker 3: Yeah? Oh yeah, yeah, even that night. Yeah. But so they do a big group picture and there's this one guy, Jordan, and you know, I hope, I hope I really we build a bond off of this one. But it was pretty cool. But this is what guys do. So he's standing in the back row, he's like six to two, and they move him down to the row below. He's like, hey, I'm never in the background. I'm a tall guy. And I'm like, dude, if you're not tall, you're not tall. Get off the back row. And he's like, you know, we're just doing the bullshit stuff. And then that night, right after the rose ceremony, I'm walking out and he looks down at my shoes, their black little pat and leather stuff that they have some print on. He's like, hey, what size? I'm like thirteen. He's like, can I borrow those rentals when you're done with them? Like due, not up. They aren't rentals I bought him.

00:15:55
Speaker 1: Okay, how tall are you?

00:15:59
Speaker 3: Six? Five? Oh?

00:16:00
Speaker 4: You're too Oh my gosh, guys.

00:16:05
Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm like I'm six I'm six close to six two. But everyone says I'm saying I say I'm like six one and a half. I was like you're six too.

00:16:13
Speaker 4: So I know Joe is the only guy that refuses to round up about his height. Anytime you will ask him to say, he goes, I'm six one and a half. I'm close to six two. Men, you can just say you're sixty two.

00:16:24
Speaker 1: My driver's license it says six one.

00:16:26
Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, because they rounded down on the drivers.

00:16:29
Speaker 3: You always round up. By the way, there is no man in this world that is five eleven, because if you're five eleven, you say you're six foot and if you're and if you say you're five eleven, you're really five to ten.

00:16:39
Speaker 4: So, yes, who were the guys after Night one that you kind of felt like you gravitated towards the most?

00:16:47
Speaker 3: Jordan Mark Chalk Dan, Yeah, that was yeah, that was night one.

00:16:56
Speaker 2: Yeah, okay, okay.

00:16:58
Speaker 1: So so you're in the house, you're you're you're mingling with the with the guys, and then you have a conversation with Joan and you end up getting the first impression rows. What was going on in your well, yeah, I just talk about that, receiving the rows and everything.

00:17:17
Speaker 3: So I finally get my time with Joan, right, and we go.

00:17:20
Speaker 1: Around and play bags, right, So we put.

00:17:24
Speaker 3: The you know, we put the cornhole out and we threw some bags for two seconds.

00:17:28
Speaker 2: And I liked that.

00:17:29
Speaker 4: I thought that was that like little like games like that, Like I would call it a cottage game, but I don't know, but it's a beach game, like it's a it's a good activity that you could also kind of chat and get to know each other well doing.

00:17:42
Speaker 2: And she seemed to be really into it.

00:17:43
Speaker 3: She was so you know, just the conversation, just how she made it so easy, you know, on this We were talking and she goes, you know, a couple of things. She goes one, she really likes the beach a lot. And she said when they go to the beach, her family, you know, goes to the beach, they they played cornhole a lot out on the each with their family and friends. So to her that I think that helped relax her as well. I didn't know any of this at the time. You know, we're just doing this. I'm just doing what I like to do and hopefully, you know, making an impression. But at this point I knew the first impression rose when I saw it come out, But now it passed by like twenty minutes ors I'd forgotten all about the first impression Rows. All I cared about was talking with Joan and getting to know her, I think more than anything. We just sat down, you know, we were going to sit down on this couch and it was like that seems a little formal. So we went over and set on the hearth of the fireplace and we just talked about you know what I think, what we liked in life, and you know, we just getting to know each other. And all of a sudden, she said, hang on, I got to get up and go somewhere. I mean, I had no idea she was going to go get the first impression Rose. I thought she had, you know, she had go maybe go to the bathroom. I don't know. She had to leave, And all of a sudden, about three minutes later, she comes back out with the ropes, and my heart was like, you got to be kidding me. You got to be you know, when I leave, my daughter's like, dad, get the first impressions. I'm like, it's not up to me, It's up to her, you know, it's that whole deal. But uh so she hands it to me and she goes, this is the very first impression Rose of the Golden Bachelorette ever. And I'm like, yeah, that's great, And but I said, what was more special to me that it was that she was given it to me. You know, just the conversation that we had, I made you know, she talked about me making her feel comfortable. She made me feel comfortable in the situation, you know why we were here. So I know it's a big deal, you know, she kept She told me that twice and I and I do understand it's a huge deal as far as the Golden Bacherette series, you know, season goes, but it's it really meant more to me that she just gave it to me. But I was not expecting it. I'd forgotten all about it, and it was an exciting moment. Definitely.

00:20:01
Speaker 1: What were the other when you when you went back in the room, you know, wearing that, I'm assuming, yeah, you put it on your your jacket or what. What were the other guys saying when they saw it?

00:20:12
Speaker 3: They're like, hey, you know, it was one. I try to be humbled once you have it. You're walking back into the room with everybody, and I just wanted to bust I go, you know, yeah, but uh, you know, just staying humble with it and just knowing that you know, this is just the first night and you know there's a lot more nights to go. But all the guys were you know, supportive, Hey, what's up? What'd you say? How did it go down? You know, so you tell the story, you know, five or six different times in different groups. But yeah, most people were just worried about their time. I think getting with Joe, Hey, Keith, what'd you talk about? How did you go get your time? You know, how do I go get time? What should I say? What should I do? Those types of things.

00:20:52
Speaker 4: Yeah, we saw a lot of your conversation with Joan was just really lighthearted, and you guys kind of bonded over like being by the way and the games and things like to do. We did see in your intro pack as you open up about your daughters and your dynamic with your ex wife.

00:21:09
Speaker 2: Were you able to talk to Joan about that at all? During night one Night.

00:21:12
Speaker 3: One, I tried to I just, you know, again again not going after the first impressions, but using that you know, you're making a first impression. I just wanted to let her know that I had three daughters. You know, family is really important.

00:21:26
Speaker 1: To me.

00:21:28
Speaker 3: I knew it was important to her, but you know, you don't know how or you know how your two lives can mesh and that that can come later. It's the first date. You're just trying to get to know each other. And so, yeah, my three girls are my life. You know. I've been with them, you know, single dad basically for the last twelve thirteen years. And you know, it's been tough at times, to be wrong, God, it's hard thirteen to twenty one for all you dads out there, thirteen to twenty one if you have a daughter, ouch. But uh.

00:21:59
Speaker 2: Yeah, those are some of the tougher years.

00:22:02
Speaker 3: Yeah, but I love my daughter so much, so I talked to her about my daughters. She talked to me about her family. You know. Again, we just we kept it l like what we like to do, how we like to spend a little bit of our time. Yeah, that's smart. I mean that.

00:22:17
Speaker 1: I think that's the best way to go about that first that first day and having those first conversations, because at the end of the day, like it is still a first conversation, and you don't want to be like, all right, you're about to hear some crazy shit.

00:22:31
Speaker 3: Me go out on her first date and you go, uh yeah, and you just delved into your deepest, darkest secrets.

00:22:38
Speaker 2: And yeah, let me tell you everything.

00:22:41
Speaker 3: Yeah, that normally doesn't come out too well at the end.

00:22:44
Speaker 4: So did your impression of Joan change in any way from just seeing her on TV to then meeting her and getting to know her night one?

00:22:53
Speaker 3: Oh yeah? I mean, so if you went to The Golden Bachelor she first night, she wasn't even I think a cameo appearance, like the camera just happened to bypass her and just you know, you get to look at her. So she really didn't come on the show until the second or third episode. You don't get to really know anybody over at TV. All you see is the physical part. She's beautiful, great smile, beautiful eyes. And then when you get out of the car and I saw her, you know it's even she's in person, she's just even more right, there's just more of her, she's more beautiful. You get her eyes are you know, it's a piercing blue with these little stars in it. I guess they were beautiful. But then she starts talking to you and it's just easy conversation. She just made me feel so comfortable. And that's what you don't get when you just watch something on TV or you see somebody right in person. Is where you get to know somebody. And she just made me feel comfortable. She was easy to talk to. You know, we had a lot in common.

00:23:55
Speaker 1: Did you notice any of the other guys having a connection with Joan when you were there, because I know you said it is kind of a it's a competition, you know, within yourself, but there are still other guys in the house trying to date the same woman.

00:24:09
Speaker 3: That first night. You know, as we talked, you just hear their conversations what they had, but you're really not basing it. You can't base if they got a connection or didn't have a connection. I would think some of the guys, just the conversations I had with them, they were more concerned, is not the right way. They were more impressed or wondering, you know about me getting the first impression rows and me making an impression on her as opposed to them. But that means nothing. I mean, it's it's just how Joan explained it to me. Know, she I just made her feel comfortable, and you know, I was the big teddy bear that you know, she just you know, just allowed her to get into a comfort zone. So doesn't mean that another guy didn't have a great connection with her as well. And well, she really based it on physical, you know, appearing, So I just look at other guys, I'm like, oh, yeah, in the real world, you know, uh yeah, okay, you'd be you'd be the dude, You'd be the dude.

00:25:07
Speaker 1: Yeah were you Were you shocked by any of the eliminations at the end of the night.

00:25:13
Speaker 3: No, But but you don't know anybody well enough to have an impression like that, right, they go off and you know they she had her reasons, but I have no idea why you know, why people laughter didn't leave, So why she kept people and why she let people go that that that first night, I couldn't I couldn't get to read at all.

00:25:39
Speaker 1: What was the last time that you slept in a house with a bunch of guys your age?

00:25:47
Speaker 3: Let's see, Yes, I'm going to be doing it pretty soon again too, but my fraternity brothers, so I have to think, but uh no, it's uh yeah, when was the last time I know, I've done it since I graduated from my fraternity, But that before going on the show. You know, one of my biggest fears was it wasn't about really meeting Joan, because I was just going to be me. It was about sleeping and meeting and sleeping in a big room with about eight or nine other guys. I can do it. I've done it for I don't know how many years of my life, you know, in college and then after college when your road trip or whatever. But I was wondering which guys out there had never done any of this and would hate it and just be, you know, a pain in your ass.

00:26:35
Speaker 2: So were there some of those guys?

00:26:39
