Correct, So my name is Drew. I had DeMarcus Cousins, Ye, dan Issell, Darius Miller had a long list. I did forget Dearing Fox, sorry Darren. But Ryan, who made up his own this game we see ours, forgot several key players, including one Richie Farmer, who now joins us today with his good friend Buck. Good to have you guys, Richie, Ryan, would you like to hash this out before we move on?

I mean we weren't am on the bench.

I'm glad you all of a sudden me Richie. Just for those who don't know, I know you've all been on several times. You're some of our favorites. But I'll go to you Buck explain. You know, I'm sure most of our listeners are familiar with the basketball legend here, but let's get a little bit about Buck. You know, you've known Richie forever. You were probably the most talented of the two, but you go back several years lifelong friends, right.

Speaker 3: And yeah, yeah, we used to. And we also we played, you know, we we had basketball goals hung up just wherever you could hang one up, and we had one. His dad had a barn down there and it was they had Tennessee walk and horses and so you know, they had a big long hallway in there, and so we we we figured out a way that we could put us a goal up, and uh we tied it up with seagrass string, you know, on the side, so you had to be you know, uh, we nailed it. We we nailed it to the to the rafter. But then you know, we we had to because it would it would sag, and so we tied it up with string on the side. And so you had to be at certain angles to be able to make it. But uh, but no, he's telling you the truth. You know. He was two years older than than I was, and and a lot bigger and stronger, and uh so I had to learn how to, uh, you know, get my shot off against bigger people. And you know, in those days, we played against older folks. Uh, we would play against you know, the bigger the Uh then in grade school, you know, I mean you'd have the third and fourth grader's play with the you know, seventh and nighth grade. Yeah. Yeah, so I mean we played against older people. And and I think that uh that certainly, uh in a lot of a lot of ways can help you buck.

I can remember when he was in probably third or fourth grade, the coach basically you know, browdy men and said throw it to him and he's gonna shoot it, you know which a lot of the seventh and ninth graders didn't care much for that strategy, but do you know it seemed to work.

They got hot right when the Mets kind of did not get hot. They can started losing right when the Reds were winning. So it is kind of a hell of a run they got on Toto and getting the playoffs.

You know, Ryan, I have I worked from the NFL now, so you have to watch every homework game. You know, I get Rogers emails. It's a whole thing. But I had to turn that game off last night. The Bengals, they're not like the Titans where they just completely suck, but they have no hope with with Burrow being out. They often store a touchdown.

Speaker 5: Their offense is nothing without Burrow out there. It seems like, I mean, you still got Jamar Chase and Higgins and they can't get him involved in any way, shape or form.

Speaker 4: It seems like Chase, probably the best receiver in the NFL, completely nothing this year, doesn't have the QB to help him out. Maybe you go get Jameis Winston. But I also wanted to bring up after the game. I don't know if you saw this. Chad Johnson does a some kind of show with Shannon Sharp. I can't keep up with all the Shandon Sharp shows. But Chad is just bawling his eyes out crying. How disappointing. It is not like a little tear full on, grown man ugly cry over the Bengals. So one Cincinnati sport on a high today, the other on a low because I think it's going to be a long year for Cincinnati.

Speaker 4: We did have a unique moment last night at the game. My brother in law, Michael, lives in Denver, and he sent me a picture from the stadium. He was at the game with our friend Tyler, and right in front of him were people wearing key jerseys about that key and he said, is this is this their parents? It's like that absolutely is so. In a stadium of whatever thousand, brother in law ends up sitting right next to Dante and and Nicole last night, Ryan, do they just go to everything I mean, they're the most supportive parent you've got one. In Lincoln, Nebraska. Now, that can be an easy trip and it doesn't matter if they're playing Seattle, New York. In Denver, they're finding Devin with the Broncos.

Speaker 5: There's probably not a lot of people in the stadium wearing a number twenty six Key jersey. So I think when Michael saw that, like it has to be their family or something. But yeah, Dantae Nicole, they going to Nebraska games on Saturday, Broncos games on Sunday. Broncos are getting ready to go to London, like they play the Eagles next and then I think they go to London. While we're talking about the Keys, this man sitting right here, Richie Farmer, reached out to me when Dane was here at UK today. Man, I'd like to talk to Dane. I'd like to tell him about, you know, being a local kid, a Kentucky kid playing for the UK. I'd like to just talk to him about my experience and maybe help him a little bit. I thought that was really cool for Richie to reach out and do that.

But you know, I think the world of the kid, and I wish him nothing but say us, you know, and whatever he does, he certainly has a chance to play at the next level and I would love nothing more than to see that for him.

I played basketball against his dad in high school. He played at a Root County so Scott, Yes, and uh, you know we actually we went to Europe together, you know, during the I played. We played on that Kentucky Junior All Star team together and went to Europe together. So you know, I'm I'm cheering for him. I'm I'm a big fan of his and uh uh I think you know, uh, he has a lot of uh uh right future ahead. He made a lot of mistakes. But you know, I was here in Anthony Whittt Yesterday Morning Talk a little bit about he said. He said, if I had gone off, my career had been based on my first game. Uh, it was the worst game I ever played, you know, So sometimes that can motivate you, but you learn from it, and he needs experience. But but I think that that's the one bright spot that we can talk about. But there's a lot of things to be disappointed about, and and that South Carolina game just brought a lot of them to the surface. I think I think a.

Speaker 4: Lot of people are patient and Bowie being young, they know he's in a tough spot. But Ryan nick Rouse just shared a stat about the offense as a whole. It's not pretty. There's only let me get this right, only two teams in all of the FBS have fewer passing touchdowns in Kentucky. And it's not even the military schools that usually don't throw. It's U Mass in Northern Illinois and then Kentucky with the fewest passing touchdowns so far this season.

But I thought the passing game, with the receivers we had, would be enough to get something going when our leading receivers are a couple tight ends. Speaker 4: I went in the back to get a drink. You know, got it, got a drink today I'm hosting. Gotta get me a little water. What I reached for a straw like I normally would do. You you gotta have a straw on the radio, you know, got this little thing here, got a sip and it was a paper straw. And I thought if Matt Jones was here and saw a paper straw in this bar, I think he would I think he'd throw the TVs. I think he would break everything in here. Luckily it was just sent as like a sample thing to try. We're not switching. But as you know, if that had been something that happened while Matt was out of the country, I think there would have been hell to pay here.

Speaker 5: I think the headphones would have slammed down on the table and we would ain't Nott have seen for a couple segments he'd been back there trying to get some plastic straws delivered immediately.

Speaker 4: A Shannon have a couple more days. Uh, I want to talk about tomorrow show a little later. Right now, it's we don't want to make people waiting longer for that story. We got cut off. Oh so Richie, I don't forget, forgot what the guy asked, but had.

Speaker 5: Well I heard the story where Rick Pattino Richie left the team. Patina went down to Clay County talked Richie to come back to the team. That's I've heard that story for years. I've never heard your side of it.

Speaker 3: Well, it didn't happen exactly like that, but you know, they're Uh, there was there was a time where you know, I'd been running uh morning, noon and night for about a month, and you know, and I kind of felt like that I was being picked on, and you know, there I was just going through a lot, and I was doing everything that I could do. And so one morning I was over, I was on the stamaster and you know, Rock Oliver was U was in there, and of course rock, uh, you know famous. You know, he was famously not too happy in the morning, especially when he had to get up to be there. And I didn't want to be there either, but I was on staremasters, you know, doing the best that I could do, nothing wrong, you know, whatever was happening. And he started, you know, cursing at me and you know, talking about, you know, putting me down whatever. Yeah, I guess trying to encourage me. But at that point, I think it was my breaking point. And so I just hit the button, stepped off of it, and I looked at him and kind of gave him a few choice words and said, I quit. And so I walked into the locker room and I was sitting there, you know, and I because I'd never quit anything in my life, and I was sitting there and I was, you know what, because that was my dream, that was you know, that was what I had always wanted to do. And but I just, you know, I just kind of felt like that that they wanted to get rid of me. They were trying to run me off. So, you know, so I was crying, and you know, he comes to the locker room and he's like, we'll go up to the coach's office and tell him what you've done. And so, you know, I didn't even finish getting dressed. I you know, just got my clothes together and I walked up into the coach's office, when at any other time, if you've been trying to avoid them, they would have been everywhere I walked through. They're walking a coach anywhere in there, you know, And so so I just I just proceeded. I walked on out to the lodge and I was crying so hard. I called one of my buddies and I said, look, I've quit the team and I need somebody to take me to Clay County, you know, take me home. And they was like, all right, we'll be right on over. So they come over and pick me up, and I mean, we get to Manchester and so when I walk in the door, Uh, there's my whole family setting there waiting on me. They know, well, coach had called. He was out on the road recruiting at the time, and he had called, and you know, he he had let him know what was going on. So when I walked in there was like, well, what's the deal. So, you know, we had a conversation, but they told me that coach. Coach Patino had called and that he wanted that he was going to be able to call back that evening to talk to me, but he wanted actually us to come up there the next day he was coming back in town. So I went back you know, long story short, you know, I went back up there the next day into his basement, and uh, you know, we we did talk about a whole lot of things, just you and him, just me and him. We went down into the basement. Mom and Dad stayed upstairs with Joe Anne and and uh, you know, we were down there probably maybe an hour and a half, but you know, we started talking about a lot of things. But at the end of at the end of it, he said, well, I think if you're gonna quit, he said, I'm just gonna I think I'll just quit too, you know, And uh, yes, I mean yeah, no, it was. It was a Jedi mind trick for no doubt. So I started like, well, you can't do that, coach, I mean, you know you can't quit. You're ricky pion. Uh he is like, well, yeah, he said, you know, if you if you don't want to, if you ain't gonna stick it out, then I think I'll just quit too, and we'll just quit together. We'll have a press conference. And said, we can't do that, and you know, so he said, uh, he said, well, I mean, will you stay with the team? And I said, Coach, all I need to hear is that you want me on this team. You know, I said, I grew up dreaming and playing here and I love this place and I'll give it everything and have given it everything that I've got. But uh, I just need to know that you want me. And he said, we want you. And so we hugged and cried and carried on and we went upstairs and you know, told mom and dad. You know, so I stayed in Lexington and the rest is history. But that did happen.

Speaker 4: Wow, Bock, what would you have done if he had come back and had told you?

Speaker 3: Well, I'll be honest with you.

Speaker 6: I saw the transformation from the time he left Clay County to the time he went to Rick Patino's boot camp down here. And like when Richie left, no get me wroung. Richie had more talent than you know. He was not the most in shaped player I'd ever seen, but he could play by and when they took him down there the first time i'd seen him. When he came back, I was up at the top of his heel and he lives up on a pretty big hill and he had a bunch of guys in there, and they was rabbit hunting or something. And here he comes running up that hill with a shotgun and he runs right past me and right on up the hill. And I said, there talking to Richard, and I said, who was that? You know, you know, if the court been more than ninety feet high school, you had trouble.

Speaker 6: Was amazed in the transformation, you know, And I mean it. He was in the best shape of his life at that time. And I guess you we have to thank Rock Oliver for that.

Speaker 4: Ye mentioned this hill. You've told the story before. I said, hell, I made it two syllables there. Yeah, you've told him the past. But you grew up shooting on the side of a hill. I should your conditioning to be the best if you're chasing rebounds down the hill like that.

Speaker 3: But you know, coach Coach Keith and coach Patino were I mean, there were a lot of similarities in the way that they did things because both were uber successful at what they did. But but coach Keith didn't believe. You know, he played college basketball on a small scale, and uh he said, I remember our coaches and how they would run us and how you know, we just didn't have anything left. And uh he said, I never wanted my players to you know, I want to I want to keep their legs. And so he believed in playing into shape. And so you know, my last couple of years in high school, I was, I mean, you were in shape enough to play his style, but uh but it was we didn't run and press and play the style that coach Patino played and it was completely different.

Speaker 6: You know, I watched the kids warm up, you know, and like they'll be shooting from all over. Well, if you played for coach Keith and you can't. He came out there and you was not shooting from where you was going to be shooting in a game using trouble, you know, like if one of your six one center is after shooting a three pointer, he's in trouble. It's it's the game has changed a whole while. But like coach Keith had his players, I mean, you didn't go out if if he caught you at the ballpark shooting from where you wouldn't be shooting in a game because his whole life entries it revolved around. I mean, it was well thought out and planned. Every time he was going to get a shot, he was going to get you an open shot, and you was expected to make that open shot. And and that's how he worked. I mean, he worked on percentages, and like rich you'll tell you, I mean it was very effective, and especially when you've got guys that can can do it well.

Speaker 3: He took people and put them in positions and you know that's that was where they did stuff. From that position. Everybody had a role, and you know, you learned to play that role. But if your if your shots were coming from you know, two to eight feet from the basket, if he goes by and sees you shooting threes, he's gonna come down there and ask you. He said, how many times you're gonna shoot that shot? And again, like you could just I mean, you couldn't hardly even act a fool around him, you know, just playing around shooting from the center line or whatever. Uh it was. It was just crazy, Uh Buck, and I've done that a few times. But uh yeah, through the left handed hook on him from a three quarter court you made two in a row. Yeah. I said, you'll never do that again.

Speaker 3: Well? Rock and I were always we had a good relationship. I mean, I think that we spent so much time together we had to like e toh, but uh, he's still working was hard. Well, I think that he you know, coach Coach Patino told told me, he said, you know, I I should have called him off, and I didn't. You know, he was he was taking the heat, he you know, because he he said, I had him pushing you and you were doing good. You were doing what you were supposed to do, and I forgot to call him all he just kept on and but but he took you know, he took the blame for him. But Rock Oliver and I, I mean, you know, we always had a great relationship.

Speaker 3: Oh, my gosh, I would have loved to have had him coach my son. But uh, I don't know. There's there's a lot of Bobby Keys stories, but I can't think of anything right off hand that you know that people would like to hear. But sometimes when people you know remind you of something that happened, then you can tell the behind the scenes. But uh, but to my son, Trey, you know, he was six four in a quarter. You know, he could he could handle the ball decent, but he was a great shooter and he had unlimited range. But he could pull up, he could go right left. I mean, he could do it all. And if he would have played for for Bobby Keith, I think he could have been something special. I told you, yeah, he had he had the ability to make him forget about me. He could have you know, he could have played anywhere.

Speaker 4: I was at some of those games where he was making his trying to make his run of the Sweet sixteen. What was it like being a dad in the crowd. You know, you've got your own legendary Sweet sixteen career, But was it hard to sit there watching him play for Clay County.

Speaker 3: Much harder sitting in the in the stands, as you know, as a dad, than it is to be out there, because out on the floor, all you know, I felt like that I had control. I could, you know, I could do something about it. Over there, you're just you know, you have no control. And uh but but his uh, his one time that he played, you know, they played Cove cath and you know they lost. I want to say they lost by two. But but had him should have beat him, actually should have beat him. Uh but uh, but Trey had I think nineteen points, eleven rebounds, you know, had a had a nice game. He was just a sophomore that year, so he was he was a nice player. He went to West Alabama and and didn't stay but a semester and didn't work out. So but he could have played somewhere.

Speaker 3: Well, I've been. I've been down there a few times. I haven't been down there in a while though. Most of the time when I go to Lake Cumberland, I go over to Conley Bottom or lee Lee's Ford or and where over there and on the Somerset side, but certainly a beautiful lake.

Speaker 9: Well, the west end's the best, and of course we got down there seventy six Falls. That's a nice party spot. But then up there at the other end of Party Cove up on the South Fork. Anyway, that was a great story you had about Beatino. I mean, I know it's one of the challenges in your life when you were facing that, whether to stay or go. But we're glad you stayed.
