215 | Environment and Expectation Changes in a Child-Centered Play Therapy Playroom
Play Therapy Podcast: A Master-Class in Child-Centered Play Therapy
In this episode of the Play Therapy Podcast, I respond to Nneka from England, a returning listener who recently transitioned from being a mobile therapist to setting up a permanent play therapy space. Nneka asks about how to handle the shift in dynamics when children are used to playing outdoors during mobile sessions but are now expected to remain in the playroom. I explain how to establish new expectations while maintaining the child-centered play therapy (CCPT) model.
I provide guidance on setting "pseudo limits" to help children adjust to the change, reflecting their feelings, and transitioning to play that remains within the playroom. It's important to acknowledge the shift without making children feel like their previous experiences were wrong, allowing them to understand that the playroom is the new environment for their sessions moving forward.

This whole community loves you. We're all in this together. 75 00:03:45,320 --> 00:03:46,580 So I just wanted to 76 00:03:46,830 --> 00:03:47,630 make, you know, 77 00:03:47,639 --> 00:03:52,320 that we understand the work that's being done and it's worth celebrating for sure. 78 00:03:53,080 --> 00:03:53,570 OK. 79 00:03:53,800 --> 00:03:58,649 So let me read a little bit of her email and then we'll kind of dive into this, I guess. 80 00:03:58,660 --> 00:04:02,410 I should preface what we're talking about. So now that she has a 81 00:04:03,119 --> 00:04:05,860 therapy house and is no longer mobile, 82 00:04:06,399 --> 00:04:11,080 she's trying to adjust to the new environment and the new dynamics 83 00:04:11,259 --> 00:04:14,679 and not really sure how to navigate that. So that's what this question is about. 84 00:04:15,429 --> 00:04:17,309 So she says now that I'm stationed, 85 00:04:17,579 --> 00:04:21,459 I have new dynamics to attend to and I could do with some advice. 86 00:04:21,470 --> 00:04:25,059 I don't know if my predicament is about limit setting or choice giving or what 87 00:04:25,320 --> 00:04:25,600 have, 88 00:04:25,609 --> 00:04:27,760 has anyone encountered a situation where there's been a 89 00:04:27,769 --> 00:04:30,609 change of environment that now affects choices and limits. 90 00:04:31,190 --> 00:04:32,260 When I was mobile, 91 00:04:32,269 --> 00:04:35,959 I was going into homes and because of the home setting and space available, 92 00:04:35,980 --> 00:04:38,700 sometimes my sessions would go outdoors 93 00:04:38,959 --> 00:04:41,260 if a child chose to go out in the back garden. 94 00:04:41,269 --> 00:04:45,429 For example, when there's a trampoline or back to play ball games, 95 00:04:45,989 --> 00:04:50,579 I worked with this in as much as it played a part in enabling a child to engage with me. 96 00:04:50,670 --> 00:04:53,109 And it was also what was feasible for the child to have 97 00:04:53,119 --> 00:04:56,679 a private space to not have their caregivers in neighboring rooms, 98 00:04:56,690 --> 00:04:57,279 et cetera. 99 00:04:58,209 --> 00:04:59,589 Now that I'm in the house, 100 00:04:59,600 --> 00:05:03,429 I want to rein that in to eliminate the outdoor ball games like football, 101 00:05:03,440 --> 00:05:04,570 basketball, et cetera. 102 00:05:04,920 --> 00:05:08,250 I do have a garden, which for those of you that are not familiar with the UK, 103 00:05:08,260 --> 00:05:10,209 that's what we would consider a yard. 104 00:05:10,720 --> 00:05:14,899 So not like garden vegetables like a yard. Grass. 105 00:05:15,309 --> 00:05:20,019 I do have a garden but I find outdoor ball games play no purpose in counseling 106 00:05:20,130 --> 00:05:24,670 because it ends up feeling like a PE lesson or I'm just a child's play companion. 107 00:05:24,970 --> 00:05:27,260 It's often felt that way. Perhaps I 108 00:05:27,690 --> 00:05:30,619 have should not have worked like this in the first place. 109 00:05:30,829 --> 00:05:34,950 But allowing this opened up opportunity for relationship building and provided 110 00:05:34,959 --> 00:05:38,470 opportunities to connect when resistance phase occurred in the past. 111 00:05:39,089 --> 00:05:40,820 So now how does one change these 112 00:05:40,829 --> 00:05:43,630 types of situations without affecting the relationship? 113 00:05:44,279 --> 00:05:48,950 I fear that it could communicate conditional acceptance such as I only accept you if 114 00:05:48,959 --> 00:05:52,109 you choose to play in the sand or if you choose to play doctor, 115 00:05:52,119 --> 00:05:56,019 et cetera, especially the fact that we've played ball games outside before 116 00:05:56,399 --> 00:05:58,359 the children and their caregivers have seen me 117 00:05:58,369 --> 00:06:00,809 do this with others before and my attempts to 118 00:06:00,820 --> 00:06:05,109 turn that around to keep the play in the house in the playroom is met with, 119 00:06:05,119 --> 00:06:07,579 but you used to play when you came around. 120 00:06:08,660 --> 00:06:13,100 I get overwhelmed and it seems too much information to explain in brief encounters. 121 00:06:13,109 --> 00:06:14,029 What are your thoughts? 122 00:06:14,910 --> 00:06:15,480 Ok. 123 00:06:15,700 --> 00:06:16,269 So Nneka 124 00:06:16,420 --> 00:06:17,890 thanks very much for 125 00:06:18,399 --> 00:06:19,510 having us talk about this. 126 00:06:19,519 --> 00:06:23,250 I think this is really helpful and I obviously, not all of you actually, 127 00:06:23,260 --> 00:06:28,809 very few of you will have transitioned from mobile therapists or in the UK Mobile. 128 00:06:29,299 --> 00:06:33,369 So if you've been a mobile therapist and you are now in a home, 129 00:06:33,779 --> 00:06:37,079 obviously, that's a very small percentage of you but here's what I do know 130 00:06:37,470 --> 00:06:38,600 as we 131 00:06:38,839 --> 00:06:42,420 become more adherent to the model as we evolve and 132 00:06:42,429 --> 00:06:45,730 our careers modify as a result of the evolution, 133 00:06:45,829 --> 00:06:49,269 as we learn things, as we grow, as we start to implement new things, 134 00:06:49,480 --> 00:06:51,529 it creates change in our work with children. 135 00:06:52,070 --> 00:06:54,130 So every single one of you 136 00:06:54,230 --> 00:06:57,540 will have either already gone through or you are 137 00:06:57,549 --> 00:07:00,160 currently going through or you will be going through 138 00:07:00,459 --> 00:07:02,989 an adjustment where current clients 139 00:07:03,220 --> 00:07:03,959 have 140 00:07:04,209 --> 00:07:07,450 gone through the transition with you from one thing to another. 141 00:07:08,059 --> 00:07:09,880 Maybe you move locations, 142 00:07:10,040 --> 00:07:11,269 maybe you 143 00:07:11,510 --> 00:07:13,290 have to switch playrooms. 144 00:07:13,480 --> 00:07:17,149 So you're still in the same building, but you're in a new playroom. 145 00:07:17,209 --> 00:07:21,470 Maybe you reconfigure your entire playroom and you get different toys and new 146 00:07:21,480 --> 00:07:25,149 toys because what you had before was not adherent to CCPT. 147 00:07:25,739 --> 00:07:29,190 So there are all of these scenarios where as we make adjustments, 148 00:07:29,559 --> 00:07:33,500 how do we navigate that with kids? So Nneka I think this is a really helpful question. 149 00:07:33,510 --> 00:07:34,589 I'm really glad that you emailed. 150 00:07:34,920 --> 00:07:35,739 All right. So 151 00:07:35,869 --> 00:07:40,040 this is how, in my opinion, the most effective way to handle this is 152 00:07:40,529 --> 00:07:42,600 when there are new expectations 153 00:07:42,820 --> 00:07:43,859 of any kind. 154 00:07:43,869 --> 00:07:48,820 So in your case, it's, you're no longer a mobile therapist, you're now in a playroom. 155 00:07:50,000 --> 00:07:53,149 So that is the new expectation that you 156 00:07:53,160 --> 00:07:55,619 now have a new environment for your play sessions 157 00:07:56,350 --> 00:07:59,619 for the rest of us, there's other adjustments that have been made, 158 00:07:59,970 --> 00:08:03,480 but with new expectations come new limits. 159 00:08:03,799 --> 00:08:05,359 Now, I wanna be really clear. 160 00:08:05,369 --> 00:08:10,179 Let's go back to the three questions that we ask ourselves about setting limits 161 00:08:10,359 --> 00:08:13,410 and the three unwritten rules. So true limits 162 00:08:13,619 --> 00:08:16,970 are only about I have to be safe. Child has to be safe. 163 00:08:16,980 --> 00:08:19,380 Toys and property can't be damaged on purpose. 164 00:08:20,000 --> 00:08:21,459 It doesn't sound like 165 00:08:21,640 --> 00:08:26,100 what you're describing, Nneka, is violation of any of those three unwritten rules. 166 00:08:26,429 --> 00:08:29,500 However, the three questions that we ask ourselves 167 00:08:31,089 --> 00:08:34,359 is this limit necessary? Can I consistently enforce this limit? 168 00:08:34,440 --> 00:08:37,419 And if I don't accept, if I don't set this limit, 169 00:08:37,429 --> 00:08:39,549 am I able to accept the child's behavior 170 00:08:39,880 --> 00:08:40,849 unconditionally? 171 00:08:40,989 --> 00:08:42,200 Ok. So 172 00:08:42,308 --> 00:08:45,950 is this limit necessary? This is where this is going to fall 173 00:08:47,070 --> 00:08:50,210 and for a truly child-centered playroom, 174 00:08:50,679 --> 00:08:54,010 the entirety of the play session takes place in the playroom, 175 00:08:55,299 --> 00:08:58,179 there are outliers, there are deviations, 176 00:08:58,190 --> 00:09:00,609 there are children that do lobby sessions because 177 00:09:00,619 --> 00:09:02,309 they refuse to come back to the playroom. 178 00:09:02,609 --> 00:09:05,479 There are runners that 25 minutes in 179 00:09:05,609 --> 00:09:07,099 before you even know what's happening. 180 00:09:07,109 --> 00:09:09,229 They fling open the door and they dart out into 181 00:09:09,239 --> 00:09:12,099 the hallway and then you're on a goose chase. 182 00:09:12,679 --> 00:09:16,440 So there are things that happen where a child doesn't always spend 183 00:09:16,619 --> 00:09:18,640 the full 50 minutes in the playroom. 184 00:09:18,979 --> 00:09:19,489 But 185 00:09:19,650 --> 00:09:25,400 the CCPT way is that the play room is where a play session is conducted. 186 00:09:26,210 --> 00:09:29,869 So that does become a limit. However, 187 00:09:30,140 --> 00:09:33,250 in your case, I would start with a pseudo limit 188 00:09:33,919 --> 00:09:34,780 because 189 00:09:35,229 --> 00:09:38,270 this isn't really the child is trying to violate a 190 00:09:38,280 --> 00:09:41,219 boundary or is trying to be disobedient to a limit. 191 00:09:41,229 --> 00:09:43,150 This has never been a limit before. 192 00:09:43,909 --> 00:09:47,940 So what this really is in the early stages is setting expectations. 193 00:09:48,719 --> 00:09:54,219 So we could start with a pseudo limit so that the child is aware, things have changed. 194 00:09:55,580 --> 00:09:58,030 This is really important because one of the 195 00:09:58,039 --> 00:10:01,159 things that we provide in CCPT theoretically 196 00:10:01,419 --> 00:10:05,039 is predictability, constancy, stability 197 00:10:05,140 --> 00:10:06,239 consistency. 198 00:10:06,929 --> 00:10:07,630 We 199 00:10:08,320 --> 00:10:12,679 that's a big component of what we do. That's why we say the same things every time. 200 00:10:12,690 --> 00:10:14,469 That's why we have the same routines. 201 00:10:14,539 --> 00:10:17,030 That's why the toys are put back in the same place. 202 00:10:17,109 --> 00:10:20,099 That's why there's everything intentional 203 00:10:20,619 --> 00:10:21,500 in what we do 204 00:10:21,630 --> 00:10:23,780 because the child knows what to expect. 205 00:10:24,309 --> 00:10:28,359 Well, by getting a new play therapy room in a house, 206 00:10:28,369 --> 00:10:31,419 you have changed what they have come to expect. 207 00:10:31,760 --> 00:10:34,419 So now new expectations need to be made known, 208 00:10:34,429 --> 00:10:37,450 but that only requires a pseudo limit to start. 209 00:10:37,760 --> 00:10:40,299 So the way that I would handle that is 210 00:10:40,710 --> 00:10:43,179 you acknowledge the earlier situation. 211 00:10:44,789 --> 00:10:45,489 So 212 00:10:45,679 --> 00:10:49,250 Jack, I know that when I used to come to your house, 213 00:10:49,989 --> 00:10:52,710 we were able to go out into the yard with the garden, 214 00:10:52,739 --> 00:10:54,770 we were able to go out into the garden 215 00:10:55,030 --> 00:10:56,840 and play football. 216 00:10:57,359 --> 00:10:58,849 But now that I have 217 00:10:59,070 --> 00:11:00,200 a playroom, 218 00:11:01,200 --> 00:11:03,750 our time together is for staying in the playroom. 219 00:11:03,760 --> 00:11:08,849 I didn't have a playroom before, but now I do. So our play time is for staying in here 220 00:11:09,210 --> 00:11:11,650 OK, notice that all you've done 221 00:11:11,789 --> 00:11:12,429 is 222 00:11:12,809 --> 00:11:17,780 acknowledge what used to be, which is kind of the reflection of feeling, 223 00:11:17,789 --> 00:11:19,719 but it's more a reflection of 224 00:11:20,080 --> 00:11:20,909 history, 225 00:11:21,090 --> 00:11:23,349 right? So I know in the past 226 00:11:23,989 --> 00:11:28,049 when I came to your house, sometimes we would go out in the garden and play 227 00:11:29,590 --> 00:11:31,250 and then you set a neutral limit, 228 00:11:31,729 --> 00:11:34,640 but I didn't have a playroom before. And now I do. 229 00:11:34,929 --> 00:11:37,969 So our play sessions are for staying in the playroom. 230 00:11:40,479 --> 00:11:42,640 You're doing kind of the first two steps of limits, 231 00:11:42,650 --> 00:11:43,770 which is why we're going to call it a 232 00:11:43,780 --> 00:11:46,609 pseudo limit because it doesn't really require the choices. 233 00:11:48,190 --> 00:11:50,479 It's just helping the child understand 234 00:11:50,669 --> 00:11:52,520 this is how things have changed. 235 00:11:53,729 --> 00:11:57,500 Now, if the child continues to ask to go outside, 236 00:11:57,559 --> 00:12:00,539 you still don't even need to go into full limit setting. 237 00:12:00,880 --> 00:12:02,830 You then start reflecting feelings. 238 00:12:03,489 --> 00:12:03,780 Hm. 239 00:12:03,789 --> 00:12:06,229 You're disappointed because you really liked being 240 00:12:06,239 --> 00:12:07,700 able to go out and play football. 241 00:12:09,280 --> 00:12:10,090 Oh, 242 00:12:11,739 --> 00:12:15,619 it's frustrating that we're not going out to play basketball like we used to. 243 00:12:16,969 --> 00:12:17,530 Ok. 244 00:12:17,539 --> 00:12:20,799 So if the child continues to ask and continues to 245 00:12:20,809 --> 00:12:22,760 say why and I don't understand why we can't. 246 00:12:22,770 --> 00:12:23,570 And we used to, 247 00:12:23,820 --> 00:12:27,169 you're just going to default to reflecting feelings, but then 248 00:12:27,429 --> 00:12:29,349 going back to pseudo limit. 249 00:12:30,140 --> 00:12:34,080 But now that we are now that we have a playroom, the playroom is our playtime. 250 00:12:35,190 --> 00:12:40,619 Ok. So now all of a sudden child knows these are the clear expectations 251 00:12:40,849 --> 00:12:41,409 and 252 00:12:41,609 --> 00:12:43,789 I feel very acknowledged and validated 253 00:12:44,260 --> 00:12:49,650 and I am disappointed and I am frustrated and I am annoyed and I am defeated 254 00:12:49,770 --> 00:12:51,349 whatever the scenario is. 255 00:12:51,559 --> 00:12:56,049 But the expectation is that our play time is for in the playroom. 256 00:12:56,909 --> 00:12:57,489 Now, 257 00:12:57,500 --> 00:12:59,650 if we get to a point where we have to 258 00:12:59,659 --> 00:13:02,580 provide choices because the child is trying to leave, 259 00:13:02,590 --> 00:13:04,010 trying to go outside, 260 00:13:04,239 --> 00:13:07,469 trying to defy the new expectations. 261 00:13:07,479 --> 00:13:11,369 So it's very clear the child is unwilling or unable to comply with the limit, 262 00:13:11,820 --> 00:13:15,489 which is our play time is for staying in the playroom for the full 50 minutes. 263 00:13:16,010 --> 00:13:18,570 And I know not all of you have 50 minute therapeutic hours, 264 00:13:18,580 --> 00:13:19,830 but that's what we do at the center. 265 00:13:19,840 --> 00:13:20,760 So that's my default. 266 00:13:21,010 --> 00:13:21,539 But 267 00:13:21,710 --> 00:13:26,479 when we have a child that's clearly struggling to comply 268 00:13:27,190 --> 00:13:32,729 at that point, you would then add a choice. So this is where you can make it really 269 00:13:33,140 --> 00:13:36,000 geared to what the child needs. So 270 00:13:36,179 --> 00:13:37,650 if the child just 271 00:13:37,849 --> 00:13:39,330 has a lot of energy 272 00:13:39,849 --> 00:13:42,349 and just really wants to play with a ball, 273 00:13:42,489 --> 00:13:45,489 make sure you have balls in the playroom and offer those as choices. 274 00:13:46,369 --> 00:13:50,270 I have a small basketball hoop that hangs on my easel 275 00:13:50,890 --> 00:13:55,380 and kids can play basketball in my playroom. I have a net goal. 276 00:13:55,539 --> 00:13:57,710 Kids can play hockey and soccer 277 00:13:58,140 --> 00:14:02,950 in my playroom. I have a soft football. Kids can throw a football 278 00:14:03,969 --> 00:14:08,919 if the goal is that the child just really wants to play with a ball and have active play 279 00:14:09,440 --> 00:14:13,109 offer that as a choice, make sure that you have those things in your playroom 280 00:14:13,679 --> 00:14:17,229 or if the child really truly wants to go outside. 281 00:14:18,030 --> 00:14:22,320 Remember your choices for limits always tie back to the original need, desire, 282 00:14:22,330 --> 00:14:23,309 feeling or intent. 283 00:14:24,059 --> 00:14:24,570 So 284 00:14:24,700 --> 00:14:28,000 what does the child truly need? Do they wanna just play with the ball? 285 00:14:28,010 --> 00:14:29,690 Do they actually wanna be outside? 286 00:14:30,190 --> 00:14:32,640 There's all kinds of motivations for 287 00:14:32,940 --> 00:14:34,789 inability to comply with the limit. 288 00:14:35,250 --> 00:14:38,679 So in this case, if it's, the child truly wants to go outside, 289 00:14:38,840 --> 00:14:39,799 you might say, 290 00:14:40,250 --> 00:14:42,789 oh, you really wish that we could spend time playing. 291 00:14:42,799 --> 00:14:45,200 But our time together is for the playroom. 292 00:14:45,809 --> 00:14:48,760 You can choose to go outside for the last two minutes or 293 00:14:48,770 --> 00:14:51,059 you can choose to go outside for the last one minute, 294 00:14:51,070 --> 00:14:52,000 which do you choose? 295 00:14:53,669 --> 00:14:57,250 And then the limit is we stay in the playroom for the whole time. 296 00:14:57,929 --> 00:14:59,130 But if you really, 297 00:14:59,140 --> 00:15:02,349 really have this burning desire to go outside the last two minutes, 298 00:15:02,359 --> 00:15:04,570 that's not interruptive to the therapeutic hour. 299 00:15:04,900 --> 00:15:06,770 And then the child is able to go out and do 300 00:15:06,780 --> 00:15:08,580 what they need to do in two minutes or one minute. 301 00:15:09,859 --> 00:15:12,820 Or you could even not give that as an option. 302 00:15:12,830 --> 00:15:16,039 And you could say you can choose to go play outside when our time is up 303 00:15:16,820 --> 00:15:17,919 if that's an option. 304 00:15:19,359 --> 00:15:25,260 So there are ways to work around a child that is used to one thing and it has changed. 305 00:15:26,349 --> 00:15:28,940 All we need to acknowledge is that things change 306 00:15:29,330 --> 00:15:31,380 and then we reflect that sometimes change is 307 00:15:31,390 --> 00:15:33,580 hard and you could even go into enlargements 308 00:15:34,320 --> 00:15:37,260 after you reflect the child's feeling several times. Then you say, 309 00:15:37,700 --> 00:15:40,369 mm it's hard when things change. Sometimes 310 00:15:41,239 --> 00:15:43,619 you really like it when things stay the same 311 00:15:43,739 --> 00:15:46,979 and it's hard that you didn't expect that this was going to be different. 312 00:15:48,640 --> 00:15:53,150 So we still remain adherent to CCPT we still help 313 00:15:53,159 --> 00:15:56,299 the child understand that his or her feelings are always valid. 314 00:15:56,789 --> 00:15:58,099 They're always appropriate, 315 00:15:58,729 --> 00:16:02,150 but there are new expectations and it's not even really a limit 316 00:16:02,330 --> 00:16:08,229 until the child starts to be unable or unwilling to comply with the expectation. 317 00:16:08,940 --> 00:16:11,570 So the pseudo limit will usually work in this case 318 00:16:11,719 --> 00:16:18,159 and kids adapt, kids know that things are going to evolve over time 319 00:16:18,650 --> 00:16:22,940 and they're clearly aware that you've moved into a playroom. Now, 320 00:16:23,369 --> 00:16:25,869 they've already gone through that transition with you. 321 00:16:26,090 --> 00:16:29,969 So they know that things are probably going to be different. 322 00:16:29,979 --> 00:16:33,789 This is just like a child knows that the rules at home are different than the rules 323 00:16:33,799 --> 00:16:35,609 at school are different than the rules at 324 00:16:35,619 --> 00:16:37,909 sports are different than the rules at church. 325 00:16:38,369 --> 00:16:42,599 Kids are very capable of recognizing that 326 00:16:42,830 --> 00:16:46,320 things don't always remain consistent in every environment. 327 00:16:46,809 --> 00:16:49,630 So when you went to their home, that was one environment. 328 00:16:49,640 --> 00:16:53,489 Now they come to your playroom, new environment, new expectations. 329 00:16:54,289 --> 00:16:56,030 So I hope that that's helpful for all of you. 330 00:16:56,039 --> 00:16:58,549 I hope that as you are making changes and 331 00:16:58,559 --> 00:17:03,039 as things evolve that this encourages you to address this 332 00:17:03,159 --> 00:17:04,358 in helpful ways. 333 00:17:04,680 --> 00:17:05,550 We just 334 00:17:05,670 --> 00:17:09,489 make sure they're aware of the new expectations and they will adjust 335 00:17:09,900 --> 00:17:12,180 and sometimes it's a couple of weeks adjustment, 336 00:17:12,270 --> 00:17:15,880 but they will learn to understand what the new expectations are. 337 00:17:16,689 --> 00:17:17,709 So Nneka in England, 338 00:17:17,719 --> 00:17:19,550 thank you again for the email and I'm so 339 00:17:19,560 --> 00:17:22,868 excited for you as you've finally built a playroom. 340 00:17:22,880 --> 00:17:26,910 So I would love to hear more about that once you're doing that for a little bit longer. 341 00:17:27,000 --> 00:17:28,750 All right, y'all, if you would like to reach out to me, 342 00:17:28,760 --> 00:17:31,160 please do brenna@thekidcounselor.com. 343 00:17:31,170 --> 00:17:33,349 If you want to leave a voice message question, 344 00:17:33,609 --> 00:17:36,310 that's 813-812-5525. 345 00:17:36,319 --> 00:17:40,329 If you would like to join our online community, you are always welcome. 346 00:17:40,339 --> 00:17:43,510 It's so much fun every week. www.ccptcollective.com. 347 00:17:43,770 --> 00:17:47,410 If you haven't signed up for my newsletter, go to www.playtherapynow.com. 348 00:17:47,640 --> 00:17:49,670 There's so much going on.
