Hi, you have a hat? Hey? Yeah, where the Mario? Right? We all have hats, the Mario brothers. Whoa? How is huh? Huh? Are you okay? Why I can hear the stream? I can hear the stream and turn it off. I hear the stream live, baby, that's a shining example of it being live. I don't know why you can hear the stream. That's weird. It's because I was. I had the stream up. I have had too. You went and watched the movie last night, and Shoot and I went and watched it at midnight, and Scoot and I have obviously been talking a lot about it, but we have no idea what you think of the movie. In fact, we were taking bets on whether or not you would love it or hate it. Scoot thought you were gonna hate it. Why Why did I think you're gonna dislike it? Yeah? Uh? In in my opinion, aside from Mario, I think it's everything you hate in media and in media. Okay, explain. I want to know more about that. I want to know more about my thoughts on media through Jackson. Well, I think you know you like more like artful shots, more like tasteful editing. I think the movie is very like fast, very zoomer editing, like a TikTok Okay, well you know, I will I'll I'll say, kind of nailed it. But I did like it. I did like I like it for what it was. I want to set this up before we dive, because we have a lot to say. This is gonna be as much as we can to begin with spoiler free. We're gonna try and dance around some spoilers at the start of the conversation so that everyone can listen. But at some point we're gonna have to unleash, so we'll let you know when we get to that point. Um, and you can stop listening and just have us on video if you want, if you're watching. But uh yeah, that was one of the first things a lot of what of the cinema said as we were walking out, but I said it as we were sat down in the seat still. I was like, that felt like a Mister Beast video. It felt like whoever edited the video they like hired someone from like TikTok or like Mister Beast's editor, because everything was like pan zoom zoom in quick cuts, like I I'm know when I'm speed running the Mario Universe. Like the whole thing went by so quickly. And as we were leaving the theater, we heard people talking and they were saying things like, man, it never slowed down, Like I couldn't breathe, Like where was the story? Yeah? There was? There was There was zero story. And I liked how it we just get into it? Now? Are we just getting into it now? Wait? Well, okay, before it, oh my god, before we get two into it. I have a little story time. I have a little story time. Um. I was supposed to go I see okay, no go on. We were supposed to go to La and we were invited to go watch the premiere of the movie on April first, and we talked about that we didn't end up going, which is a real bummer. You. I don't know if you want to say the reason you didn't go. I know I had commitments. I didn't go because we all went to packs and then a lot of some people got the VID. I didn't, Kim didn't. But we had a lot going on this month and they told us like four days before we needed to go. Yeah, And there was also that they didn't give me the invitation until like the week off, and then I looked in the flights and I was like, these flights like a thousand dollars. I wish I had it gone just because Miamoto was there, Jack Black was there. It would be really cool. It looked to watch the movie with Miyamoto. But regardless, because I was going, they sent me this box, so I still got this box. I saw Greg Miller on box that and I was like, oh, that looks so cute. So when you open it, it plays the Mario tune. I don't know if you can hear that. Yeah, oh well you could barely hear it, but you have to talk over because Discord's cutting it out. Okay, well it's playing the Mario tune when you open it. Scout and I opened it before the movie because we thought, what if there's something in here you need to watch the movie with, like a fun bucket of popcorn or something. I don't know, but it just came with some fun stuff. There was. There was a note the Mario notebook from the movie, the sticker sheet that they were giving out at the Nintendo World, a bum bag that scoot water to the movie. We also we wore these hats that they gave us, which was very nice. There's a there's some cool things in here. Though. They gave me the Mario van again, which I already bought, so I gave it to Scoot. But they have both of the Mario and Luigi figures from that's the van and then yeah, thank you Sco just put it on the table. I appreciate you, buddy, how thank you these little these little do hikies. I didn't want to take too much of this audio time up opening this thing, but I wanted to show the bowser. I wish Discord did the audio a better justice because because it is really cool. He opened it up and it plays to marry with him and then this bowser is sick and apparently if you put water in him, he'll like breathe smoke or something. Oh my god, that's awesome. Yeah, and he actually does look really good. A lot of the figures look a little rough. That looks good. Yeah, no, it's good. This is a good one. Also, the van's probably going to be really cool, all right. Cool? Anyway, that was that. Thank you um u universal triple triple point for sending me this. I really appreciate it. Thank Yeah, that looks awesome. So why do I get out of that? Uh? Well, there was also the soap that I bought. Oh yeah, I went and bought this and then they gave me something. So I also gave this to Scoot like Mario, oh god, oh god, I shouldn't have sniffed it that close. If you it's what is a question block? Smell like instantly. I had to sneeze as soon as they sniffed it. Pungent, there's a there's one of six different bath bombs inside here, and you don't know until you get in the tub spread eagle, which you got a spread eagle for it. Well, because Scoot is do you want to say? No, it's okay, he's not going to say. And then here's a little it's a coin soap as well. That's cool, that's cool. I wish it was. I actually bought some for myself. So those are Scoots and I figured we could use ours as the TikTok shorts, so we could we could get Hannah to like melt the bath bomb or something. Yeah, no, we could do that and then put that on because I did say we're done with the soap, but come on, this is too good to not do. Yes, No, that's good. A bit of a meta thing. You're recording? Are you recording my audio? Because I wasn't able to do a local recording. I was recording no audio until right now when you set that. Okay, so we'll be ripping this from YouTube. Sorry. Wait, can you come to the YouTube and watch though? We got a cool little auto scene switcher. Sorry, you've been replaced by robots. I know AI is taking everybody's job. Uh okay, can do you want the movie now? Yeah? Where do you want? I shut the hell up? You think everything's about you. I got things too, asking where do you start to start with? What I got? I got this cool question blocked in that. I think you went to AMC. Yeah, fifteen bucks. I didn't need any of the popcorn in it. I just took this, but I got this hat at packs. We went to Regal and Scoot complained that the popcorn was called I never want to go back to Regal. The popcorn was fine, but it was you know, they don't do the they don't do the butter like liquid butter like. Some of the popcorn just had butter like infused into There's usually like a little station you can go to and like get extrab Maybe I didn't. Maybe I didn't do that. It's been a while since I've been to a theater. Okay, so let's talk about this. I messed up and I wanted to do the midnight launch, but I waited too long to get tickets because we didn't know what the hell was going on. So I did, like, you know, eight o'clock at night on the day that the movie came out. I'm so used to go into midnight launches, like back pre COVID, like when the Marvel movies were a thing, they would do pre launches, so they would do a midnight but they do it at like seven o'clock the day before, and that was awesome. And sometimes they do midnight and I remember now why I liked doing those so much, because if you go in the middle of the day, especially if it's a movie that's made for kids, which this absolutely was made for kids. Yeah, all this kids run around, everybody's talk. Nobody gives a shit about the actual movie. Everyone just w was just like it's a raucus. It was a frigging Yeah. It wasn't a fun experience seeing the movie in bad primetime with a pack theater mostly kids. I will say, though, Kim Scrut and I went to watch it at midnight, and we all regretted immediately. We were driving to the theater. It was like a half hour drive because we had to find one that was doing a midnight launch. We were driving to the theater at eleven thirty pm. We were all tired, we were all ready for bed, and we were like, why are we thirty year old adults driving to a movie theater to watch a Super Mario movie? Like I wanted to bail so many times, and I just didn't say anything. And then the next day Scoot said the same thing. You were like, I sat down in that theater and I was good to go see. That's prime time for me and Hannah. Twelve o'clock is like our our afternoon, so that's why I was like down for it. But I couldn't find any theaters around me because I waited too long, So that suck. We had to do it at eight o'clock in the at night. But it was fine. Everybody shut up after about fifteen minutes. But then, you know, the first fifteen ten fifteen minutes of the movie is like nice set up, you know, nice, let's stop talking about it. Yeah, we're gonna try not to spoil as much as we can, but we'll warn you when we start to just go fulham spoil. Actually, if we want to just get one thing out the way initially, as far as spoiling things go, I and I have been waiting to ask you this. I hope you would now agree with me. I one thousand percent nailed it. We had already seen this movie going into it. What what are you talking about? When I talked about how through the trail is and through everything they revealed in the movie leading up to it, we'd already seen the movie. Oh yeah, yeah, the whole Yeah, most of it was well, but here's the thing. There was there was no story. There was there was a story in the beginning, and then there was just action for an hour, just an hour of action. It was bokended by like a little bit of story and that and that the conflicts that happened throughout the way weren't really like things. It's it's not the it's not that this happened, therefore this happened. It was this happened, and then this happened, and then then happened, and then this happened, and it would just never ended until it's not. There was zero story. Yeah, there was zero depth in this movie, which is I was about like half an hour into the movie. I was like, Oh, this isn't for me. This is a kids movie. I have a lot of thoughts here, but I want to I want to still touch on Yeah, the trailers literally everything we saw, everything down to the fake commercial that they put out with the number that you could call that we thought was so cool. Everything was part of the movie. And the only parts of the movie that weren't shown through trailers was the very start in Brooklyn, the very end, which we want to talk about yet, and then some of the Key Kong's area, like from Donkey Kong's town. Other than that, you can piece together this whole movie through the trailers that we saw. Like and another thing is the trailers were like two or three minutes long, and they were pretty pretty edited down versions of the entire scenes. So like when Mayo gets spat out of the tunnel and then goes off with Toad, that was condensed down to about two minutes, and in the movie it was like five minutes. So you're kind of just seeing like the extended cut of the of the trailers that you saw. They didn't spend more than five minutes anywhere. They just went flying. They never stopped without without spoilers until the end. I would say there was one scene that wasn't in the trailers that was like a cool surprise. It was like, Oh, that's that's cool they did that. There was a lot of uh, you know, oh, there was a lot of stuff for like, like a lot callbacks. There was a lot of yeah, there's a lot of moments all over the place. It was fan service the movie, which was great, and I appreciated that. And that's why I think I liked the movie a lot because four seconds I was like, oh I know that, Oh I know that. Oh that's cool. But otherwise there's there's no story. It's just it's just doing an action thing. I think that's why there's a huge disparity between the critic version of the reviews and then the user reviews the viewer reviews. I think both are correct in a weird way. I think the critics absolutely nailed it, but then the users, the people watching it that want to go see a Mario movie out also nailing it because like the movie is for us, it's for the Mario fans, and they absolutely crushed that with the fan service, like you tweeted, you know, like there's a scene in Mario's bedroom where there's a picture of F zero on the wall behind him, and through the whole scene, I'm like school and like I was loving the scene because of that. But it's going to be there's gonna be YouTube videos, Oh yes, references yeah, yeah, absolutely things you missed a BuzzFeed article. But if you're a movie critic and you're sat there watching that scene, you're like, what's the exposition here? Why are we in this bedroom? Like what's the point? Like where we going? Harry up? Come on? Like, I like, there's nothing there for you if you're trying to watch a movie. But if you're trying to find Mario Easter eggs, like you're having a blast. Yeah, you're a Mario fan, you're gonna love this. Yeah, so let's talk about the rotten tomatoes. We have the audience. Wait, the critics score was fifty. The audience score I remember seeing ninety eight percent. I don't know why it dipped down the ninety six. Yeah, now it's now it's hidden I think when the Mario Movie tweeted it, it was around nineties, really high. It was one hundred for a hot minute, and then it kind of dripped down to like ninety something. Yeah, they knew what they were doing. I mean, I I it's I don't know about the ninety I don't know if I'd go that high as a fan service movie and a fun Mario movie. If you just like take a Mario game, a Mario franchise and make it a movie, I'd probably give it like seventy eighty percent. But if you would to say, like, how does this stack up as a movie? They I would agree with the critics. I think they really rushed through anything that would make it considered a good movie. I would give it a solid eighty three percent. Yeah, that's what I would say, because I myself, Yeah, I enjoyed myself. Like I said, about like halfway through the movie, I was like, God, slow down, give me something to think about, Like you're just shoving things in my face. I need like a breather, you know. But again, the movie's not for me. If you if you sat a four year old down and asked him to rate it, you know, those are the critics, but also Charlie Day said his biggest critic is going to be a middle aged man in his basement, and he's right, while I am side in my basement. But hey, I'm not his biggest critic because he was one of my favorite parts of the movie. Childie Day absolutely nailed Ludi j Yes, so all of the I liked all of the performances. I think. I actually my biggest concern was gonna be Chris Pratt, and I thought he was fine. I thought he was He did nothing to me that stood out. I feel like some of the other performances really stood out. He was just kind of there. But it wasn't bad, it wasn't off putting. I wasn't thinking about Chris Pratt the whole time. It's just it's easier for me to look at characters like Luigi and I think of like monologues like when he's getting his mustache pulled, really excellent delivery. I think about. Obviously, Bowser was literally just Jack Black, like we may as well just call that character Jack Black and like something to his voice. But I liked it. They made it, yeah, like like they gave it reverb or something. It just great. He sounded great, and he had stand out moments like his song, his songs he sings in the movie. Yeah, when that happened, I was I went to Hannah and I was like, do you think they just do you think that was on the script or did he just do that in the vocal booth? And then and then they wrote a whole thing around it, and like even even Keegan, I guess Toad has to really stand out moments where he sounded really like Toad and then like funny moments where he got really serious and like he's like, I'm a warrior. Whatever that moment was, I can't think of one for Mario, like one standout great performance Mario moment, and it was obvious, very vanilla. All the other characters carried it. Yeah. I thought Chris Pratt did exactly what Mario needs to do in the games and just that's just b Mario, which is just being okay and it's like solid watch him. Can I I want to talk about a spoiler adjacent with his accent because they they mentioned it at the start. Do you think that's safe to talk about? Save it? Because because a lot of this stuff is is references that people want to be surprised about. Okay, then we will save this for the spoiler discussion, but I will say that they did explain away his lack of an accent at the start kind and I liked it well, but anyway, we'll get to it. And I liked it. I liked the explain I liked all of the performances, with the exception of one that I'm really disappointed about. I guess the best character. Yeah, well you disappointed in yeah, cranky Cong yep, yeah, because he's the best character at fred Armist. This is the best character actor on the cast. And his voice was so annoying and I was weird. I guess that was on purpose, but he has so much better range than that. I don't know why they went with that voice. It was every time he opened his mouth, I was, I was, I cringed. It didn't really sound like Cranky Kong to me. It sounded I don't know what he was doing. He wasn't Cranky Kong. He was a loof cong the whole time. He was whimsical whimsical Cong. Yeah, he just kind of went through movies like he sounded like he didn't really like care. What was happening. He wasn't really cranky in my opinion. Also, like no character development on any of the characters. He literally went from you are not getting my okay, I don't want to give a spoiler. Yeah there was. There was zero character development, and I wanted more of that. I wanted more of a story. But again, it's a kids movie. You sit a kid down in front of an animated movie, you want them to be blasted with actions so that they don't want to stop watching. Yes, that was the that was the Zoomer edit. That was just constant, like let's just keep these kids interested. I kind of I kind of get it. But that's why I liked the start so much, because the first ten minutes in Brooklyn, there was like a ton of character development. The pacing was slower um Like, again, not too many spoilers, but you meet Mario's family and like, the whole setup is really organic. I really was really enjoying it. I was like, Wow, we really have something here. I think this movie is going to be really cool. Yeah. And then right as they hit the mushroom King and it was like bing bang bulled right to the end. Yeah, and yeah, I was like that's another thing I hate the what is it called Iszakai like trope where they get blasted into another world where people get sucked. You get you follow like you have a main character and they're in the real world so we can relate to them, and then they get shoved into a different world and then you're it's supposed to give you something to relate to that you follow along. I hate that trope because we don't really need someone to relate to, just give us a relatable characters in that world. Put it like, Mario's existed for thirty five or whatever years and we've never needed an explanation for where he's come from. We've always just been fine with it. So like, I think it's I think it's lazy to take someone and put it put it to take someone in our world and throw them in another world and use them as a vessel for the story. But I think they gave me what I wanted at the end. Yeah, well it is. It is also kind of the Canton story as well. They were just kind of retelling the initial story, but well, the canon Mario story is all over the place. There's like but I guess kind of like kind of like the most like presumed story. I guess, like because if you were to ask me, like make a Mario movie like the Bass Mario movie script, I would be like, Oh, Mario gets sucked into the Mushroom Kingdom or like ends up in the Mushroom Kingdom and then has to like defeat Bowser, And that's really like what the whole movie is. The only thing they really tried to flip on its head was obviously who the damsel in distresses, which in this case is Luigi rather than Peach. Yeah, that's obvious from the trailers and stuff. I appreciate that. Yeah, so I I liked that because Peach was great. No, she was fantastic. Um. I want to say as well, leading into our title, that we were right about the Super Mario movie and you talking about like being sucked into another world. This was my theory from the very start, Like as soon as they reveal the cast of characters, and I was like, man, these characters have never done voice acting character work before, voice character work before. This has to be some kind of weird live action movie where like Chris Pratt gets sucked into the Mario universe and now he's he has to be Mario. That is essentially what has happened. Just it was all animated, you know, like he is just playing Chris Pratt. He just got sucked into the Mario universe. It is that story I thought it was going to be. It's just I thought I thought the Brooklyn part would be live action, just but based on the actor choice. And it wasn't ridiculous. But I wasn't really wrong about the character work because they were all essentially playing themselves. They literally made bows of Jack Black, like he is just playing Jack Black with some reverb on his voice. Chris Pratt's just Mario, Charlie. They did a great Luigi but if yeah, if you've seen Always Sunny, that's like just one step above Charlie from Always Sunny. It's not that different. Seth Rogan was literally Seth Rogan in a monkey suit. He even had his laugh in the movie a few times. Yeah, yeah, I didn't like I think you're supposed to not like him the Donkey Kong for for a bit because I didn't, but then you know, he comes around. I also had this thought leaving the movie, and I brought this up to a Scoot and Kim. I want to get your thoughts on it. I I thought it was really interesting and a weird choice. How much they made some of these characters, specifically Bowser and Donkey Kong literally their voice actors, Like, if you haven't seen the movie or you're not, you're going to see it. I can't stress enough. Donkey Kong is Seth Rogan. They have they have a moment where like it like zooms up on his face and he goes like, the joke is that's Seth Rogan doing his laugh and they put it in the movie as an Easter egg. Yeah. And then Jack Black is literally like that is him the whole movie. He sings, he has songs, and he sings like he's Intonacious d again, He's his facial animations are Jack Black. The reason why I find as weird as awesome as it is for us as an American audience. This is getting translated into other languages, like Japan is gonna watch this, And I'm really interested in that they're gonna miss the jokes. They're gonna miss the Seth roganisms, They're gonna miss the Jack blackisms because I mean they might know of them, maybe, but I'm sure they're not as popular over or like commonly spread over there where you could like see a movie with someone animated as that and think, oh, they're doing Jack Black, like in like France and like Japan, like you know what I mean. Yeah, well, I know that they're really big on American movie stars and stuff, so when they watch American movies just with subtitles, you know, and then they're just totally cool with it. We're ignorant. We don't like subtitles for the most party. We watch anime where weaves. So the weird thing about this though, is that it is being dubbed in other languages everyone not in Japan. Japan, they want the American voice actors. Oh really yeah, as far as I know, I mean from the trailer like we did. The Japanese trailer is just the American voice actors. But there's like the Italian version, which is dubbed, the French version which is dubbed Those are other ones I know of. I'm sure there's more. So I'm pretty sure that the Japanese version is just gonna have Jack Black in it, But I'd be curious to see how it's going to translate into other languages. Yeah, I mean, I even if if they get someone to like recreate the voices and the jokes exactly. And this is my just my weird train of thought. It's not important at all to us. But unless you've grown up watching Jack Black, unless you've grown up watching School of Rock and you have like this love for Jack Black, like all of America does and a lot of English speaking country does, it's just not going to hit the same. You could have someone completely replicated in French, but it's just they're not going to understand that it was supposed to be Jack Black. It's just they're just gonna think, Wow, Bows is really colorful in this movie. Why they make him sing so much? Like why I think I was his singing? These these characters, they are characters, but these actors are are global celebrities like Black. You've seen videos of him on like Korean game shows, and he doesn't they are. They're all speaking Korean. He doesn't understand a word that they're saying. He's playing along great, Okay, so maybe it translates better than I thought that. Yeah, yeah, I think that even though they're going to be speaking in English. Uh, I think people all over the world are going to recognize these people and they probably also recognize Seth Rogan and his laugh and stuff. That has to be an insane level of stadhom where like you can be in a Mario movie and have a character who is pre established, completely reanimated to be like you and the whole world appreciates it. Yeah, that's got to be really cool. I love Jack black Man. He's so freaky. He was definitely the best one in the whole movie. But but in the car on the drive home, because I was like, I just got to listen to some Jack black Yeah, No, he's he was easily my favorite part of the whole movie. But I liked a lot of I liked all of the performances. I liked all of the characters pretty much, with the exception of Cranky Conger. I think he could have done better. But I had a great time. I thought I was gonna like it a little less than I did. I was surprised with how I thought coming with what I felt coming out of it. I loved it. It's not something I would want to watch again. No, when you kept you kept talking about wanting to like see it together a second time, I was like, I don't, I don't don't like seeing movies twice, and this is the type of movie where there's just nothing to see again, there's no depth, there's nothing to and maybe for new references, I don't know. I'm trying not to let this and I haven't let this play into the equation and I can't and I'm not being facetious because I had seen this movie already through trailers and the first almost hour of the movie up until you hit Donkey Kong and you finally start to see some new scenes and new things that want explored in trailers. Watching it for the first time ever in the theater at midnight, I was a little bored waiting to get to a part of the movie I hadn't already seen. Like it felt like I was watching the movie for a second time and I was waiting for it to hit a point. And that's not even me being facetious, Like I knew all the beats, I knew where we were going. While I was watching a scene that had already seen, I was like, the next one's going to be the Mushroom Kingdom, the next one's going to be when they go to the I was just waiting to get to a new point, and that didn't happen until like half an hour at the end because there was nothing, There was no depth, Like you, they were like, we gotta get Bowser, and then the whole, the whole thing was just like the journey that they already mapped out. They're like, this is the map of how we're going to do it, and then they did exactly that with no conflicts or anything. And even the big, the big I guess turning point in the movie that what do you call that? The climax was in the trailer and was very obvious from the very beginning. So it was stupid, but again it's it's for kids. I uh, I was. I felt the same way. I was, like I want I don't want to say I was getting bored, but I wanted them to go back to like I wanted more about Mario. You know, they kind of they kind of set him up and then threw it all away for ye for a lot of it. But but again when I left, I felt a little, a little redeemed. So yeah, I want to scoot. I don't want to speak for you, but you mentioned you one of your biggest things was just character development and relationships, which is super lacking. Yeah, it was just kind of depressing. Uh. And again, this is like I understand everyone's complaints of saying like why are you looking for a Mario Mover story, but like when you see a guy come out of a pipe and you're a native and he looks nothing like you and you're like, oh, come on, like like let's go, and like there's no name exchange, there's no like what are you doing out here? Like why was Toad out there? What was Toad doing? We know nothing about Toad and he was just kind of there's a good point. They never explained why who that toad is or like why he's so cool? Like why? Yeah? They never they never said who the toad is? And also when when this is I don't think this is a spoiler, but when Peach met Mario and all that happened for like a long time, somebody else was like who's that? And it's like I was like, Peach doesn't know his name. He never introduced himself at it. Yeah, she said she said his name, and I was like, how did wait, how did she know that? That was the moment where they were like who is that? And she goes it doesn't matter, and then they just move on. And that was like to me, it was like they were almost making a joke in the movie about how this doesn't matter, Let's just get to the next point. Yeah, yeah, yeah, And there was a lot of that. There was a lot of stuff. There was a lot of stuff where I was like, wait, how does this They didn't establish this, but but it did. It didn't matter because it's just let's just get to the action. I liked Luigi and Mario's relationship and their friendship, like it was really set up at the start and then explored right at the end. And obviously they were a part for the whole movie, so there wasn't much in between that. But other than that, there was no other I mean that the the only other close relationship we really see in the movie is Bowser and that wizard Coopermic. Yeah, they kind of have a little relationship, and you see that a couple of times. Mario and Pete flu one time. Let's get this. I want to jump into spoilers because now we're getting into details. Before before we get into spoilers, there's a couple of things we didn't talk about that we can visually. It looks absolutely fantastic the animation is so beautiful and obviously we talked about all the Easter eggs around, but animated really well. The music really slapped as far the video game music they translated into an orchestra. Some of those moments like the end, which we won't get too yet, but some of those moments were highlight it so well by hearing that old school music, like when they're platforming in the movie and you hear the platforming like kind of feeling music that they've turned orchestra, some of the Donkey Kong music. All of that made the movie so much more special. And yeah, visually it looked really great. Musically it sounded really great. I do have one grape with the music. Yes, there's one gripeople if we're a lot, maybe there's spoilers, maybe it's not, but they use like eighties music and like real world like music. Yeah, and it sounds really totally wrong once they're in the Mushroom Kingdom, Like there's one specific scene where they use take on me. That was the weirdest one for me. Yeah, it was so to me. It was so offensive because that at all they Okay, they could have opened up with like the opening theme of that specific game, and it would have been beautiful and it would have fit perfectly. There was a few there's a handful of real life songs, and they were all played for like twenty seconds, and I think half of them were fun, and I think they like really heightened the moment. I think that one specifically stood out to both of us because and I don't this might be a little spoiler. I don't think it is. When you're going into Donkey Kong's Kingdom for the first time and they're racing, it played Take on Me, and it was just so I don't get how that song fits the scene at all. They turned Funky Kong into like an eighties guy. I know, but you could have like eighties up like a Donkey Kong track or like, I just don't get white. It just felt really weird being Take on Me and it was for like ten seconds. It just played like ten seconds. That's not that's not for video game fans anymore. That's for the moms who are forced to be there with their children. Yeah, that that that one was a little jarring. The other ones were great. I think that the Mario universe has such great music you don't even need to rely on some of those other tracks to do two or three as to heighten a joke, on heighten a Moment's fine, but it happened I think, just a couple too many times in weird places. I wonder how much Koji Kondo had to do with it, because he was credited multiple times in the in the in the credits. Can I actually say a weird thing about being credited? This is this is kind of a spoiler, so let's just lead into the spoiler talko. Now, all right, spoilers everybody leaders spoilers wrap. When Mario and Donkey Kong fight, they played the Donkey Kong rap. Yeah, I didn't notice that. I saw it in the credits, but I don't remember. I didn't remember them playing the DK rap. They played the DK rap and they didn't credit Grant Cook. They didn't credit him. They just said Donkey Kong rap from the Donkey Kong game or the Donkey Kong And it looks like in the credits it looked like the only track that didn't have a music credit. It was very weird. Yeah, they just didn't credit him from the music. I find I find that really disappointing and wild. I felt bad for him. He seemed really upset on Twitter. Yeah, yeah, a picture of it, because I guess he was waiting for the credit and yeah it wasn't there. That's gonna suck. I mean, like, don't go sixty four didn't make the game. I mean the music. He made the music. And the first the very first name you see in the very beginning of the movie when because they show like the little pre title screen credits, the very first name is Shagiro Miyamoto. It says made by Shagiro Miyamoto. End, and then the name of the director. And I was like, that's weird because I know Miamoto made Mario, but he probably didn't do as much on his movie. Then that's the director didn't No, I think that was showing respect, which I can appreciate. I mean, it's his whole world. Is it's showing respect or is it you better put my name before your name in this movie? I want to maybe I don't know. I don't know much about Miyamoto. I didn't get to meet him like I would have if I'd gone see the premier I could have got a better read on that. Yeah, where do you Okay? Let's I want to talk about the accent thing that I mentioned, Yeah, I want to. I'm curious what you have to say about that. So Mario didn't have an accent in the movie, had a Brooklyn esque accent, but mostly it sounded like Christmas. It's very light. He out every once in a while, but for a couple of times. Yeah. Um. Chris was getting asked in interviews like what's to deal with the accent? And he always bounced around the conversation. And I feel like the reason for that is because answering it is a spoiler, because it's actually part of the story. At the very start of the movie when it cuts to my brothers for the first time, it's that trailer that you saw shared around the Internet of their plumbing service, and what they cut out of the trailer because the trailer we saw on the on the it's hard to say trailer that the commercial. What got cut out of the commercial in the movie that we saw in the trailer of the commercial was Mario and Luigi. Is very confusing. Mario and Luigi talking in a very Italian Mario accent, like Chris Prett does it. He does like to be a Mario And if you want to order my plumbing. It's a yeah. And then it fades out from the trailer the commercial in the movie, and Mario Luigia sat there watching it and Mario is like, I don't know, do you think the accents were too much? And then it pans to an old school jump man looking Mario voiced by Charles Martiney, who goes, well, I think it wasn't perfect. Who does like a little jump Yeah, that was way too on the nose, way too soon for the Charles Martiney cameo. I don't know, man, I kind of liked it. I was like, okay, so that's why, you know, they've explained away why he doesn't have an accide. So yeah, they're basically playing characters in the commercial that they made, and that's the first thing you see in the movie is that commercial. And you're right, they're like, oh, wait to think about the accent. But then they immediately go to dinner with their whole family. Yeah, their whole family is all different ranges of that accent. I liked that a lot because it was like, this is where they came from, and this is where they pulled that accent from. It's all pieces of this yeah, I was. I was watching one question. Yes, yes, did the family not sound like fried biscuits like at all? It probably did. It sounds like my whole lot of them. That family sounded like where I freaking that while it was happening, like this is Bob's family, right, Yeah, one of the uncles made like a stupid joke and then like the white family goes why why kids head and me and my friend I watched it with my friend pissed and we both started hysterical laughing at that because that's like, that's our uncle's right there. I like that a lot. Now Mario's dad, do we know who he was played by? Because that sounded also more like a traditional Mario accent, and it kind of a little bit sounded like Charles Martiney. But I don't think it was. Google it real quick. I think Charles Martiney played more than just jump Man in the movie U he played I believe I read he played a character named Giuseppe as well in the credits. I think that. I think it was Charles Montney as Mario's dad, Giuseppe. Yeah, that was also Charles Montney as Mario's dad. That's that makes a lot of sense because because that's what you hear. You hear that, and it's like, okay, that's where Chris like, that's where Chris Pratt's Mario gets the accent from. And that's why he's playing it up in the In the commercial, he's playing a character who is fucking dad because he wants to he wants to impress his dad, and his dad is like, you're making a character of me. I don't like it. It's kind of weird in that case then that they they I mean, I guess I just wanted the reference of jump Man in like old school Mario, but they could have just had Charles Motney do it as his dad, and like they're watching the trailer with their family, and the dad is like, it's a perfect that. I love it. Like he didn't even really need to add in that whole extra step. Yeah yeah, hey, uh but you know what, but you know what, let's pause in his conversation forgot at something. Yeah, because we went we went to watch the movie at midnight. And you know what would have helped us be a little less tired? What some trade coffee? Baby coffee? Yeah? I love trade trade, trade trade coffee. The sponsor of this episode of Trade Coffee. Baby, you send me whatever you want. They always crush it and nail it. Bob, what's your favorite thing about trade coffee? My favorite thing is the frequency it sends it right when I'm done with the bag. I got another one to ride on my door. And you can change the frequency however you want if you if you decide you're down to one cup of day, you can change it to every other couple of weeks, doesn't matter. We've talked about them last time we did this. This one's El Salvador, not to maya thank you trade sponsoring the episode. Thanks back to it. All right, well that went very well, that went very well. How far in are we right now? We're pretty far okay, just checking. It's fine, pretty for We've done a lot today, all right, just checking. Not because I want to and I have a lot more to say, but because I wanted to know where that sponsor got placed. Whoopsie, whoopsie, daisies we were at Yeah, we love trade so much. Please everyone, please support the sponsor. We were a little late on that one, so grab some coffee and make it up. Make it up to them. Yeah, um, all right, so spoiler talk. We just talked about Mario's voice and and Charles Martiney and whatever, and we we start off with with their establishment in Brooklyn, like, yeah, we we got we got a little bit of Mario and Luigi lore which was pretty good. Like, I thought that was pretty nice. I liked I liked it a lot. Um. You know, something that Kim said to me on the way home was we never found out why Brooklyn was flooding, which, yeah, a lot of things just happened in this movie, and then they didn't get explained. At the start of the movie, Brooklyn is like underwater, like there's like a huge pipe explosion or something. That's just that's what happened. That's said, that's justly yeah, you know, all right, it just happens. That happens. You're always wondering down the street and you will see uh, fire hydrant just shooting water everywhere, and everyone just goes about their day. Nobody cares, you know. I think it was funny that that marisaw Thing was like, this is a chance to save Brooklyn, and then they literally go and they make it worse, and then because of them, they end up at the end of the movie coming back and really making things even worse again. But just because they managed to put a little ball on it, everyone's like, yeah, so that's what I wanted to get to. They have the establishment of them in Brooklyn, and then they immediately get transported to the Mushroom Kingdom, and then there's just an hour or more of the Mushroom Kingdom and I'm like, I liked the others go back to the ki trope. But then at the very end they do, and I was like, oh, goody. And then you see all the characters from the beginning and I'm like, oh, this is actually really cool. When the friggin bullet bill was goat, when he was putting it towards the pipe, I was like, he's gonna blow up Brooklyn. This is that was a really weird idea that Mario had. He was like, this tunnel that I came through that I know leads to Brooklyn is a great place to send this nuke. Yeah, what part of that made say like the all the time, I'm like, that's not gonna go well. But obviously it was a plot device that honestly, I don't understand how it made sense. It blew up in there and somehow it's just like sucked specifically bows. So what I'm assuming happened and this is this is creationist or revisionist history, I guess, whatever you call it, whatever the phrases. You're filling in the bank for the movie. Yeah, so when you go in the pipe, you're in like a like the wind and like the wind, because like there was like a little middle world between like Brooklyn and the Mushroom Kingdom. So I'm assuming the nuke, nuked the little in the middle place, and there was like a vacuum because like the passageways got all messed up, and it sucked everything that it could because it it sucked up the floating castle and everyone that was like flying around not like you know, you know, there's that sense. I get what you're saying, but it feels it's like it's a good explanation. It feels like it sucked up some very specific plot points driven things. Oh no, it shook them all. It sucked them all up into it. It sucked up like his whole castle and all the key characters, but like not everything in the universe or like they were all on the floating castle island, all of the characters, well, like the castle was nowhere near the tunnel. It was just very convenient. It's all I'm saying. I have to I put all of that aside a lot because I'm a I used to be a huge Star Wars fan. I guess I've fallen off a little bit. But in Star Wars everything is a coincidence and you just kind of roll with it. No, but it's the force. Yeah, the force is what and you know what, that's a great way to explain it away. The force is what brings all these people together. The galaxy is massive, there's billions of planets in it, but for whatever reason, all of these guys happened to meet each other. You know. Yeah, I really feel like, unless I'm wrong, there was normal spoilers from the start right up until Donkey Kong. Like that whole hour stretch was old trailers stuff. I don't think there's anything so really I will I want, I'll say that you nailed it. That that there they'd take like a two minute thing from the trailer and make it like a five minute thing. But I actually kind of liked seeing how things were different from the trailer. I liked a little bit extra exposition, Like right in the beginning, the very beginning is the thing that we saw from Bowser, which I think that we yeah, it was going to be the opening. We guess that. Yeah, got that right. He says uh uh yield or or you will die, And I was like, Okay, that's different from the trailer. Yeah, they definitely switched up some voice cues. Yeah, and uh when he gets the star at the end, he doesn't say who's going to stop me? He said he says something else. I forgot what he says, but it's different. It's it's a different line. They definitely set up the trailers to be more like dramatic, like Who's going to stop me? And then you watching the trailers, you're like, oh, is Mario is going to stop him? But like from a movie standpoint, that would be I guess a bit cringe. So I guess they retold some things. Some other things I found interesting is when Mario lands in the Mushroom Kingdom in the trailers, there's a sound bite of him going what is this place? That's not there. Where that SoundBite came from is when he's in Brooklyn and he gets he goes down into the sewers and he finds a big expansive he looks over all the plaps and he goes, what is this place? And it's the exact same sound bite. So they mixed up a lot of things. When in the trailers, when he finds Toad and he's like, we gotta go to the Mushroom Kingdom and he's hopping on the mushrooms, that's the first time we hear him say here we go or whatever it was, and that's not there. In the movie, it's completely silent mushroom. Yeah, we um, that's that's not in the movie anywhere, like, not even not anywhere in the movie. That was only for the trailer. In the movie that is silent and he's just hopping. So I don't know if that was a trailer at it to make it more exciting, or if all the controversy around him saying that, they were like, let's just nix the line. Yeah. I think that the trailer was set up to give you a lot more explainer in such a short period of time. So that's why they kept some things in there, left some things out. Maybe they did cut out the mushroom Kingdom here we Come because it was well. The funny thing is people were like finding comic book strips of him saying that line and they were like, no, it's from the original comic. This is Cannon, And then in the movie it's not even there. Yeah. I don't understand why that was even unless I mix it, but I'm pretty sure it's not there at all. I don't know, I don't know what else. Oh yeah, so yeah, all the trailers up until Donkey Kong, they really just show everything. I mean, maybe there's little easter a characters or like a little thing in the background, but nothing really to gosh over. When you're at DK that's when things stopped picking up. So if we want to get into spoiler town, I think one of Scoot's biggest reaction was to Diddy Diddy. It wasn't just Diddy because Dixie was there and m Chunky was there as well. He was right next to them as well. They were all three sitting together. It was so happy. I like that they were all chanting like Donkey Kong whatever it was, and then Diddy was the last one, still chanting like he's so excited. My theater went nuts when they showed him. Quiet. Yeah, I think everyone was really sleepy. Actually, it bought me out a little bit because you were talking about your theater being a little loud. I kind of wanted us to pop a bit more at some fun moments, but it was dead quiet. There wasn't a chuckle, that wasn't a laugh through the I'll say I'm being I'm exaggerating a little bit. There were people that were just talking for the first fifteen minutes, like to each other, not thinking about that, and then there were a couple of nerves. It is behind me to my left that were every little reference They're like, oh yeah, they're like freaking out about it. So that's that's what I'm saying when people kind of want it was that those guys like I kind of love. I remember I went to watch the Dragon boll Ze movie where like Freezer is like gold whatever that one was, and the theater was going it was like on Launch first showing. Theater was going nuts for like every little thing like vegeta was dancing, and I was like, man, this is great. I'm this is like hyping me up. They like clapped at the end, like stood up and clapped, and this movie yeah, dead silent. That's another reason I like the midnights for the Marvel movies because everyone was just going no, because everyone's going absolutely the Endgame or Or and Infinity War was insane. Yeah, people sobbing at the end. At the end of Infinity I remember somebody was like Spider Man, that was crazy. When Kim and I went and we didn't even see at midnight. We saw it like two days in and people were like clapping and having a great time. Someone said in our chat, right now, I almost cried at the end, and I want to say I didn't the way I just saw it. I'm not joking almost cry tony. I didn't cry at the end. I actually almost got a little teary when um I think it's when Luigi and Mario were getting separated the first time, or like he's something's happening with him. He's like captive and he has that flashback of Mario and babies, and it's luby Mario and Luigi and like the designed the same way. I actually almost got a little teary at that. That was another matter almost got me lost it because I I the two characters I love playing the most in like Mario kard Mario Baseball, or Baby Mario and baby Luigi. So seeing them be included, like I was like, oh my god, that's that's it was also like I told the story to death. But Kim and I first conversation ever was about Super Mario World, and so like sitting in the movie theater next to Kim and like that little baby Mario. I looked over at Kim, I was like, oh my god, I'm gonna cry. Like yeah, it almost get me. I don't get like emotional during like you know, like sad parts in the movies and stuff. I usually get teary eyed when there's like, uh, like like I don't know, like a heartfelt callback or like, yeah, it happens to me a lot in like Star Wars. When there's like when they were doing you know, when like Leah shows up on screen, I'm like, oh my god, Oh my god, I remember her from the old movies. So like I got that too, because I was like, oh my god, this is like I've been a Mario fan for my whole life, and now all of a sudden, he's, oh, he's a mainstream and yeah, and they're making all of these references to all of the stuff that I used to play that I used to think was like like a niche thing, and now it's it's a global phenomenon. That's why I was Scoots said he thought you weren't gonna like it. I was like, you're wild man, this is Bob's moment. No, I understand. Yeah, he nailed what I didn't like about it. That was stuff zero on Mario's wall, the other stuff made up for I'm not an Zero fan. I just like got that falcon. I'm a Smash Brothers fan Yeah. Yeah, they made up for a lot of the problems that I had with it with all of the fan service. Yeah yeah, and that's definitely a huge part of the movie was about. Yeah, it was definitely like about the fan service. I don't I don't like the opinion that like, if you're expecting a good story out of a Mario movie, you're the problem. I don't. I don't care for that opinion, because like animated movies, I think have gotten only better for the year. I also don't like the excuse it's a kids movie. Kid, Yeah, that's the lamest excuse. I'm sorry, Kids movies can be good. Look at look at what it. I became really good friends because we were both obsessed with Mowanna Ma Wana. Oh. I'm sorry, no in content, but I do love ma Wanna Welcome into You. They're doing a live action ma Water Yeah, I know. Yeah, we gotta go see it. Well, I mean, black Adams in it at midnight? Bob, are you in midnights? Quick? That's going to be a dumb midnight to go that sound like quick funny story? Sure, we were, we were lining up to watch and this is this is just one of them things. I don't want to embarrass them. We were lining up to watch the movie last night. We wore these hats. Legit Scoot had a Mario sweater on. We're at the midnight launch where everyone's dressed up as Mario and I see in the line. Some call me Johnny. He's like getting his popcorn another another YouTuber. I walk up to him and I'm like, hey, man, just wanted to say hey, don't want to bother you, like we've actually done a video together before, so I I just wanted to say hey. He goes, oh, you here to watch the Mario movie. He said that with series, and without missing a beat, I went, no, she's just them two. He just really like, oh my god. I went with my little Mario hat too, and Hannah wore a little Princess pizza. I know, you guys are so cute. We went into five Below right before the movie because we smuggled in snacks, and the second I walked in, the guy that worked at five Below went, hey, it's to me. I bought six dollars M and MS because I forgot to bring snacks. I bought a fifteen dollars question blocked in I bought a ten dollars large popcorn. We spent. I don't actually realize how expensive due movie companions are. I I got the snacks because I felt like I needed to do something. I ended up studing like fifty dollars snacks. So I grabbed the tickets for everyone, which was seventy five bucks for the three of us. Because it was supposed to be four and Bengal didn't come. I got an extra ticket from my brother and he didn't come. But that's my fault. I just assumed he was gonna. It was my fault. Two. I just wanted to make sure I had enough. But let's say, and then Fandango doesn't make it easy to return one ticket. You got a call, so I just money. I didn't bother. I ate it too. But let's say I would have paid fifty for all three of us. You paid fifty just for the snacks. Yeah, Like that's wild. Like a bottle of water was five dollars. Yeah, I didn't. I got the We smuggled in a bottle of water, and then I we also bought a second bottle of water. But I usually don't eat. Well, that's the thing I say. I don't want any popcorn, and then somebody buys popcorn and I ate the whole freaking thing. I we we ate two large popcorns between the three. I also, I accidentally got three D and I didn't all three D, but I I ended up getting three so it was fine. It was okay. I didn't mind it that much. I didn't want to get three D. I even said the school, I, do you want to do three D? And he was like, no, I don't want to. But when we got there, I realized it wasn't three D. It was forty so the option smells. There was smells the whole time, but like we didn't We went standard and then we was sat in the standard crummy seats. The popcorn was called. There was dead pixels in the screen, and I was like, I kind of wish we did the four D. I think you would have had a lot more grapes with the movie if we saw it in four days. What is the fourth dimension? Though, explains they like they blow like that it's said on the wall. There was like ice heat. It depends on like what theater. But the going off the one in um Times Square that I've been to, it's the regal Ewok Cinema. I saw Spider Man Far from Home there, like they have like fire like pyrotechnics there. Your seat vibrates, your seat will like do things. It's it's a whole. It's like a ride for the The fire and and and ice sounds cool. That would be really yeah, I know so on screen visual effects, synchronized motion seats, and elemental effects such as water when fog, sent snow and more to enhance the end. Hate that I kind of wish we'd done for d X I. I've never done it, and I feel like that would have been the perfect no idiot like older locations, the lava, the ice world, the mushrooms. It's fun. It's just for that movie. And now that I can say for certain after seeing it, it would be a two hour Universal Studios ride that you cannot get off. It be better than seven dead pixels and freezing cold popcorn. Okay, pop the theater doesn't change the poplar, that's true. That's true. The popcorn's not never gonna it's gotta be the same popcorn. Yeah, true, unless you went down the Drafthouse. That's they got. They got some good stuff. I wanted to say, the one big surprise of the movie. Should we can wait? Can I talk about the three D for two seconds? That? Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah yeah. I didn't mind it. Usually I hate that having to have the glasses on. It was fine. The thing that I'm completely forgot what go into the movie theaters, Like what's seeing movies in real life? Is like because of the pandemic, I haven't seen anything um and the three D made me realize why VRS so much better. Like three D was it was fine, but like they force you to look at whatever is in focus. Yeah, like you can't focus, like like your eyes can't focus on whatever you want. In VR, it's the game focuses on whatever you're looking at, whatever your eyes are darting to, and in this your it forces your gaze at certain things, so that kind of like breaks it a little bit when you're looking at something that's out of focus. But otherwise it was fine. It was okay. It was as far if I'm getting old and I'm missing something, But like I remember three D with like Spy Kids three D and like go into the theater and you would have just like the paper three D glasses because they want a thing yet yeah, and it was like fun. It was fun as a kid. It was a fun experience, but it was a gimmick. I'm so surprised now, like twenty years later, three D is still like the standard way of watching movies and you have to like actively pick the standard version if you don't want to do three D. It's not that good. I see movies a lot. This is not standard anymore. I don't know, man, I feel like, but I went to book this movie, the top option everywhere was like the forty actual the three D or do you want to do the standard? I think it's because it's this movie is like very large. But how is it still a thing? In every theater has three D? Still it's not it's not the projector it's not that good. And most movies don't don't build for three D. They just like make a movie and then they just like do a three D filter over it. You know what I mean? Am I wild? Uh No, it's not made for three D, like like like Mario was not made for three D. It's just they shoehorned it over it. If you saw Avatar, you'd probably be like, what it's crazy, But we do see I kind of want to go you want to see you wants the Avatar? No, I don't want to see that. I don't understand the whole thing around Avatar. I saw the first one when it came out, and it's like, okay, it's three D okay, like this, It's not like it was a good movie. Otherwise, they're blue, They're blue blue. Speaking of blue, the water is blue. The only real twist in this movie, and the thing that was not leaked in the trailers I would, I think, is when the Rainbow Road gets crushed and Donkey Kong and this is a spoiler. You're listening still and you don't know that you just tuned into spoilers. Donkey Kong and Mario end up in the ocean. And what's in the ocean but the big stea worm thing that I always think at the name of the eel, the big eel. They put the eel in the movie. Yeah, that was cool. And this was the only part of the movie with character development. Yeah. Yeah, between Mario and Donkey Yeah, because they hated each other, which I thought was kind of a cool dynamic. Yeah, and then they came around at the end. Yeah, And that was the only real character development. I mean, Luigi Mario were brothers from the stop brothers at the end, Mario and Peach they floated once, but it didn't really imply they built any sort of relationship. Everyone hated Bowser at the start, hated Bowser at the end. The only character development in the whole movie was between Donkey Kong and Mario, and it was done in a thirty second scene. But it was nice. I liked it. It was nice. I liked it. There's all different designs for the eel and they went with like the modern design for the eel. It's a it's a moray eel. I'm looking it up on Mario Mario wiki right now again. Could you see the little eel eyes and you're like, oh god, we're gonna get an eel. That's cool. Nothing in this movie had a purpose or a point and they would just move on to the next thing. I was kind of hoping they would the eel would come back, they would use it in some way, like it would like eat Bowser and like that's how they like defeated Bowser or something. But yeah, nothing in this movie had a had a solid cool back or any kind of pre pre thought planning that's not true. If there was pre planning for one thing, I want to say, yes, Scoot nailed something. This was actually really wild. We were driving to the theater and Scoot said in the back seat, he's like, I have a prediction for how they're gonna beat Bowser, and I I was like, Okay, I don't want to know because then the whole movie I'm going to be thinking about it. So write it down and show it to us later. I'm not even kidding. In the theater when it happened, he pulled his phone out and like showed me. I was like, oh my god, yeah, you want to say what it was. I was thinking about it. Um, that wasn't even what I was referring to. Um, but I was thinking about it. And on the sticker sheet, all the power ups that were used in the movie are on the sticker sheet except for the blue mushroom. And I was like, oh, I guess they can't kill Bowser. They don't want to like burn him and make him dry Bowser, so he's got to turn tiny, So he's probably gonna eat the tiny mushroom. Yeah, he crushed it. He brought that on his phone and then showed me. As it happened, I was like, wow, yeah, I didn't think about that at all. I used the tiny mushroom during the smash thing too, did Yeah when Donkey Kong, Yeah that when I saw that, I was like, oh, that was on the sticker sheet, the blue mushroom. I was almost thinking they might become friends with Bowser at the end, just based on it being a Mario movie and like maybe like while Luigian Warrior work out, walk out something, there's still time, there's still yeah, there is I think in the next well maybe not that direct next one, but I think eventually, yeah, they're gonna team up and there'll be a greater threat of some kind. I don't know what they could do, because Mario's threat is always Bowser. Do you want to talk about thoughts for the next one, because in classic Mario movie style, there is an after credit scene. Yes, there's two. One is really just a fun thing. Yeah, yeah, there's an actual like hint to a next movie. Yeah, there's the there's the egg. We're just spoiling everything there. Yeah, there was a Yoshi egg and and he goes he does the Yoshi sound at the end too. Yeah, Now that was cool. But can I a little a little a little, But also I was like, is that a callback to like Godzilla because when they did like the Gods at the end of the credits, because that that was kind of cool. Yeah, can I be a little bit of a bummer on it and say that it was kind of a disappointing thing to end on just because we'd already seen Yoshi's. There's literally a Yoshi's island in the in the world over, Yeah, there's a whole Like it's only like a twenty second clip of all the Yoshi's running, but that it kind of gives away that there are Yoshi's. I kind of feel like if as fun as that clip is, it would have been better to not have it in the movie and not have any reference to Yoshi at all, like period, full stop, no Yoshi. And then right at the end it pans over to a Yoshi egg that starts cracking. Yeah, that would have been way better. Like I've already seen Yoshi's Like, yeah, I already know, I already know about maybe maybe maybe the Yoshi world should have been just like a jungle. Well, they already had the they already had the Donkey Kong World. As a jungle. They showed another Mario world. Yeah, but I mean, I feel like one thing we haven't mentioned is the Luma sprite. Yeah. I was just gonna say the suicidal Luma. That was my favorite. I love that they were great, but that was my favorite thing. And they also call out that there there's a big galaxy out there, and I know where I'm from. So that's all setting up a Mario Galaxy situation. So you've got Mario Galaxy is probably gonna happen next and I'm guessing Yoshi's gonna be a part of it. I wonder if Yoshi's gonna talk. Oh, I hope not. I mean, I mean it sounded just it sounded straight up like Yoshi did. They just played the Yoshi sound by it, so maybe it's not um And we haven't seen any talking Yoshi's yet, so yeah, maybe they are just like a pet, which is how it should be. UM. I don't know how the concepts of Yo Yoshi and Galaxy are gonna go together, because there's a kind of separate two ideas. Oh is he in Galaxy? Actually I've never played Galaxy? Did really tweet? I've actually also never played Galaxy? Too really, actually did I is that the one that I played for like two hours? I was about to say I've played it a little bit. I did play Galantitude for two hours. Um, I think I called the end credits, but I think I thought it was gonna be Yoshi on top of Peach's castle, which probably would have been cooler. That would have been really cool. It is it is Yoshi, so whatever. Yeah. I was kind of thinking it might be again Warrior O Wallauiji. I thought they might pop up at the end, but that could be one of the threats. And I mean they're gonna make a bunch of movies out of this. Now, this is going to be a bad guy and who's who else is it gonna be? Yeah? Um, Scoot was saying that the rumored next movies, uh, obviously another Mario movie, a Zelda movie. I've heard a Zelda series, so they we're gonna do They were gonna do a Zelda Netflix show, but they canned it. Oh, I mean they could still do it, but I'd imagine they'd want to do a movie now. But I keep hearing that the next one is Donkey Kong, which I think, Uh, I've already set up. Yeah, they set it up to do that. I think it's I'm not that interested in that. I'm not not that excited about I want to see a Luigi's mansion now that they that was another one Luigi. Yeah, yeah, that would be really cool. I feel like it was a line in the movie that Luigi said too that I felt like, Oh, that's setting that up, something about him being really brave or he said something and I was like, Oh, that's going to lead into Luigi's mansion. I would definitely prefer to see that. The thing we're doing like Donkey Kong movie is that you look at this movie and they're so clearly not committed to any one thing, like they just wanted to show you this, show you this, show you this. They didn't spend time in any one thing. I can't see them doing a whole movie based justin Donkey Kong's world. Like, I don't think they're gonna they. I mean, they have the pacing for that. So they the Universal Studios collab made it so they had a whole section at the theme park, and when they were walking around the Mushroom Cakingdom for the first time, I was like, Oh, that's literally Nintendo World at Universal Studios and they're building the Donkey Kong area next and that's only in Florida. Okay, well it's it's clearly because they're setting up something that's I think this whole thing is a ploy to sell Mario merch and get people to the Nintendo World and stuff. It felt a little, um, I don't know what the world is. As as we were sitting down to watch the movie, they kept playing Nintendo Switch game commercials and like I was like, man, really this is very kind. Didn't see any game commercials really, you know what. I walked into the theater as the trailers like just started. So yeah, they at the commercial trailers before the movie trailers. They were showing a lot of like Nintendo kind of trailers for video games and stuff. What games. It was like a highlight like Marios and smashing all that kind of stuff. They show our videos, yeah, yeah they did. They showed your video of the Zelda Switch, Yeah there's a switch. Also my mod video was was in there too, my video about piracy that I just uploaded. Yeah. They actually previewed our entire Emulation podcast episode. Good. It was like an hour and a half. Yeah, it's good, good, crazy, Mario's marry himself. It's crazy. Nintendo send you that box of swag too. Nintendo did apparently. I don't think Nintendo had anything to do with it. The Nintendo's paying someone to give this stuff to the best candidates, and that person they might have done it. You were the best candidate just to get my address? True good point sneaky, So I gave them screen waves address. All right. I liked the movie. I think it was as good as it could have been. I mean, I guess I wanted more depth from the characters, but like, I'm not watching this is like an art house piece. I'm watching that that this is not made for me. It's made for a wide audience. It's it's it's there to hit the points for fans, which it did a phenomenal job of. But it's also there to keep a kid's attention, which made it worse for me. But I understand. And then and then I think we forgot to say at the end, they brought it all the way back to Brooklyn, soa where I was upset that they left Brooklyn because that was my favorite part because there was fun characters and depth and stuff. And then they at the end, they brought it all the way back and all those characters came back, and I thought I loved that. I was I was a yearning for that the whole movie, and then they finally brought it and I was happy with it. Yeah. I also I didn't want to I didn't want to talk much too much about the climax of the movie, but I did really really enjoy it. Um, I'm still I don't know, are we in spoiler territory? This is like right at the end, were you too? We we've been doing spoilers stuff. Okay, that's been fun. I just loved the relationship between marian and Luigi. I thought it was so sweet that they made them like they're just they're brothers that love each other so much. I just thought it was such a nice, sweet bond. They really did like it. And having the moment where Luigi finally protects Mario after Mario has been trying to save him the whole movie. Yeah, and then like you kind of think, oh, now it's Mario's chance to grab the star, but they both leap for it and get it at the same time, and then that music kicks in and the way it's all animated. It's so cool, such an awesome way to end the movie. And yeah, I agree with you. I think both both reviews on Rotten Tomatoes are correct. I think the critics are one hundred percent right, Like it's not a good movie, Like it's not as far as a from a critical standpoint, the pacing, the story, what they what they set out to do, Like, I think it's they followed all formula. It's very mid, it's very medium. If you have no attachment to the Mario franchise, if you're just going into this to watch a movie, you're probably not gonna like it. Like it's gonna be like a pretty average. But if you're a fan, if you time Mario, guy, look at him. I got Marrio everywhere, I got married over here again, this is kind of a banger movie, Like it's kind of everything I would want. It's literally a video game, like the shallow story Mario video games turned into a movie, and they did it I think with almost expert precision, like showcasing the platforming, showcasing the Mario karting, like we didn't even talk about when they picked their Mario carts, they'd literally have spiner wheels, like in the game, and they build their Mario cart like it is a love letter to all the Mario games, the whole Mario franchise, while leaving enough room for more Mario franchises in the next one to really showcase like everything from retro to new, like it was a masterpiece of love letter to the Mario games in a movie. And from that standpoint, I agree with the ninety percent. I think the problem with video game movie for years is that they didn't get the source material. They would like, pick one thing and call it back, or they'd or they'd missed the mark completely on the callbacks. And now we're at the point where I think our generation and the people who grew up with this stuff and who are real big fans of this stuff are old enough to make the decisions. So people that are our generation or maybe slightly older, are the ones who are writing the story putting those callouts in there. People who grew up with Mario carter like, oh, this is how you pick the things, or we should put that in. That would make a lot of sense, and then all of the people around them are like, Yeah, of course we're going to do that because we grew up with Mario two, and we know that that's the thing. So I'm glad that freaking video game movies are finally they're finally getting to where comic book movies got to ten years ago. I agree, And I think one of the last thing we didn't touch on is the comparison between the Sonic movie and the Mario movie. And I think it's kind of funny that all these years later, Sonic vers Mario is still an argument, you know, like the video games were back in the day, now we have the movies competing, and from my standpoint, I think the Mario movie did a better job at bringing the video games to a movie. I think the fact that it's all animated, it's all polished, there's there's no downtime, there's no bad parts of the movie. It's just really rushed. I think you look at something like Sonic, there's a bunch of scenes and places you can cut out. I could not stand any of the wedding staff in Sonic Too. There's just a lot of like too. Actually, I'd be really happy to condense those Sonic movies. And I think as far as like does this bring Sonic to life? I would like to see an animated Sonic movie now that actually dives more into Sonic's world. Ye, the stories of Sonic, because that's kind of what I want from Sonic, not some weird live action. As much as I enjoyed it, I think Mario did a better job Sonic did the Izakai. I hope I'm saying that right. He did it. They did it worse because Sonic entered our world. Yeah, and it's like I don't want to I want to see a Sonic movie. I don't want to see Yeah. Yeah, So that's why I didn't like But I as a film, I liked it a little. I don't know if I want to say more like because I remember leaving the Sonic movie and saying, as a fan, this was really good. But as a movie it was like okay, So I guess I felt very similarly. But I might say that Mario was was it was better. It's your different experiences because Sonic was almost too slow for me and wasn't as fast as I would like. But I say that's what made it feel like a movie. It felt like an old school nineties almost movie. Yes, there was a ton of character development. I mean, Sonic alone grows as a character or a bunch. His relationship with James Mosden, is that his name, James, That relationship grows a bunch. I mean Sonic has enemies, he has friends, and yeah, all those relationships developed, and yeah, it feels like an old school nineties movie and it actually feels like a film. And yeah, in that regard, I like that movie more. But I think just as a whole, if I had to sit through one again, I would probably well, I don't know, Actually, I don't want to watch them, not at all. I think they're very similar and they hit different. They they went about the problem in two different ways, in two very different ways, and I think they ended up both kind of equalling out, like they're both kind of just as good as each other. But you know, we have a lot more, I guess, to love about Mario than we do with Sonic. Like I grew up, I was a segad kid. I grew up with Sonic, and I liked all of the cartoons and stuff. But there's a lot more Mario to love than there is Sonic. There's a lot of Band Sonic games and a lot of Band Sonic media, So I guess seeing Mario on the big screen was was more impactful, I guess, and it was way more polished again, like absolutely, the whole thing being animated had such a nice shine to it. The music, the act, everything was condensed and concise, but at least it made it so everything at least had punch. So one last thing that I wanted to say is that Mario has like no story Like in the games. It's all over the place and they give you nothing. At the games, there's sometimes maybe a little cutscene in the beginning, like is the princess being captured? Oh, here is how it happens this time, and then you have to go solve it. So they didn't have much to work with. And it's weird for us to be like, we want more lore from Mario, we want more character development, because that's not usually what happens with Mario. But we are watching a movie. It's a movie, yeah, so we need a little As adults, we need a little bit of that. That's what we're here for. And it was fine, It was fine what we got. It was weird watching an animated movie with characters I was attached to and not being made like felt like I was being made to cry at any point like I think nostalgia can get you terry eyed maybe, but as a whole, like an animated movie almost always brings me to tears at the end because of how hot felt the story purpose that's what. Yeah, but this had like there was I had no attachment to any characters. I was not engrossed in a way where you could ever bring me to tears with the ending other than just pure nostalgia maybe overwhelming me. And I'm not that big a Mario fan, so like my heart was not in this movie. Well, one thing that my brain was because I had I was stimulated. One thing that really impressed me about like a couple of minutes into the movie was that, like Mario is such a weird concept, you know, like it's an Italian plumber and he's the first game Italian plumber. I don't know why I'm playing an Italian plumber stepping on it is well mushroom chests, nut guys, you know, uh, but it just you just go with it and it just makes sense for some reason. Everything about this world is weird and mysterious, but you just kind of roll with it. And they didn't explain a lot of stuff, like the power ups and the toads and and bomb creatures running. Yeah. Yeah, they didn't explain anything. They just showed it. And I was very impressed that it just worked. And I saw it with my friend who's not a video game guy, and he just rolled with it too. He was like, Okay, yeah, cool, cool, Like you don't need That's what I love about it. You don't need an explanation. It's so weird and wacky you just kind of like, Okay, I'm in this weird, wacky world. Yeah. I agree. I think it did a good job. I think it's also like what twenty twenty three now, and we've seen so many movies in weird worlds and whacky moble stuff that we're like, okay, just get well, that's the thing. A lot of stuff like that explains too much. Yeah they try. Yeah, So I think it's really impressive that Miyamoto crafted a world that's so different, has zero explanation, and makes sense to everybody. Yeah, it's amazing. There's a reason why the franchise is so popular, and it doesn't make really sense why it is so popular. It really makes no sense. It was a good it was a good game in a world where there were a lot of band games, and for some reason, a little Italian short plumb a man became a mascot everyone wanted to write or difle. It was a great character design. He nailed it. Okay, that's it. That's that's our Mario movie review was good. We liked it, Yeah it was. It would say a lot. I would say we liked it a lot. Don't don't get mad at the critics because they're right. But that doesn't mean that you can't love the movie like we do. We absolutely. I'm sitting there as as a critic whose job it is to pick apart a movie. We could pick apart it for days. Yeah, you can't give this movie like a ninety percent. You'll be laughed out of the Academy like literally an anime. It's an illumination film. It was designed formulaically to be a blockbuster hitting for everybody to go. That was nice when they it's critics jobs to be completely non biased, like they can't bring their their preconceived love and notions from Mario into a movie. They need to rate it as a movie, and as a movie, it wasn't good. They did a very formulaic thing because they wanted to appeal to the most amount of people possible and make a fun Mario movie, and they crushed it. I think I would have done some things differently, but I don't think I could have done that good on my own. Yeah, that was really good. They did a good job. Yeah, all right, um, do you have anything you want to add? In the beginning of the movie, when it says illumination pictures, there's a minion in a Mario Kart modeled after the groommobile from Despicable Me. I want the minion and the cart to be in Mario Kart, please and thank you Miamoto. Oh yeah, that would actually like that. That would be cool. They started the movie with a with a callback. That was pretty cool. It even worked like it does in Mario Car. That was cool. I can't stress enough how cool it was when they were picking their carts and they were playing the Mario Kart eight music. Yeah, it was. It was how much focused there was on Mario Kart because they were like, Mario Kart is arguably bigger than Mario. So yeah, a lot of people know that character from that From that whole part of the movie was like a full on Mario Kart eight movie. They had the flying aspect, they had the wheels like the gravity wheel that was, they had bumping into each other throwing the items, Like I kind of wish there had been an item block at one point that they would have hit. Yeah, and then got like a fun ability out of that. Maybe. I like how they explained the items though. I thought that was like I was okay with it. Yeah, based on that. No, it was cool. It was cool. I think there's more we could gush over little easter eggs and fun parts of the movie, but we gotta go. We gotta bonus. I don't speaking a bonus episode.
