I want to start the show with a quote from Matt Gilb's article in The Athletic this morning about the Phillies. It's not a quote, actually, it's quoting Matt because he said something incredibly profound about baseball.

Speaker 1: Now, Matt, of course was writing about the Phillies problems at City Field and the sweep that the Mets imposed on them, but it's true, no one has any idea about anything in this sport, even the people on X, even the people in social media, even all of the people out there who think they know more. We know nothing, which is the enduring beauty of baseball.

Speaker 3: And I think what he's referring to, obviously, Ken, great to be with you as always on this Thursday, is the Phillies have a queen's problem and the Phillies just got swept by the New York Mets. What is happening?

Speaker 2: Good question if you're the Phillies.

Speaker 1: And this is a problem that dates back to twenty three and includes, of course, the postseason last year, they have struggled at City Field. It's one of those weird baseball things. Or the Mets that much better than the Phillies. No, of course not, but this has had profound implications for the Pennant races. Suddenly the NL East is at least somewhat realistic for the Mets their four games back, and even more significantly, what has happened here is the Phillies no longer command one of the top two records in the National League. They were right there or not right there with Milwaukee, but they were second to Milwaukee. Now, after last night the Dodgers winning, the Dodgers have slipped ahead of the Phillies. So for the Phillies it's kind of problematic. Now the wildcard race is pretty much decided. You see it right there, the Reds of four and a half games back. It's like the Royals in the American League. The Royals are three back in the American League wildcard race. Affect either one of those teams to get there, barring some kind of Minnesota Twins twenty twenty four collapse. But these races are still alive. The Division races, as we'll discuss in a little bit, are quite good as well. But the Phillies thing, there was not a race. There were seven games up going into this series, and now there is one because they're only four games up. And yeah, if you're the Phillies, you're wondering what the heck is going on. And from the Mets perspective, Nolan McClain, last night, this kid suddenly looks like an ace. They are hitting again. Yent Dos is hitting again. You've got Soto and the Door and Alonzo all awakening from their August slumber or whatever that was. They're an interesting club once again.

Speaker 3: Yeah, and the Mets. All the Dodgers, I should say, have the Mets to thank for putting them in a position right now, Ken in which the Dodgers could get a buy just based on seating. How important do you think that is to be able to get that buy in the first round. I guess it depends on how how well you're playing at the time. Do you want the break or do you not?

Speaker 1: We have seen examples in recent years, the Diamondbacks a couple of years ago, even the Rangers a couple of years ago of teams in the first round breaking out and going all the way into the World Series. It's just more difficult that way. And if you're the Dodgers, for instance, do you want to expose yourself to a best of three, even though it would be at your stadium most likely where anything can happen. You can go into a situation where you're facing a hot team and then you have also two or three more games to play and to use your pitching staff in those games. They'd rather have the rest. All teams would rather have the rest. Sometimes these teams come out flat after having the rest. But if you're the Dodgers, you want one to get the division, which now they have a two game leader with San Diego, not exactly secure, but better than they were, and you want also to get that buy no question, they want that. The Phillies would want it to if only to rest your banked up players.

Speaker 3: Let me ask you this, Shoeo Tani obviously a key component to that Dodgers, not only the starting rotation, but of course to the offense. Breaking out the split ken to right handed hitters looked really good yesterday. Nine K's five innings what did you see?

Speaker 1: I saw a really, really good pitcher and I watched that game last night. He does things with the baseball that not a lot of pitchers can do. And when I talk like that, when I say that, what I mean is he can manipulate the ball in ways that a lot of.

Speaker 1: That's sweeper or I don't know if it's a sweeper slider. It was breaking horizontally like crazy the split, as you mentioned, Alana. He broke that out to right handed hitters, which he really had not done before. It's a pitch he still has to command, but.

Speaker 1: He is so good, and if he is going to be the guy we saw last night in the postseason, which is of course his goal, then you're looking at Otani, Snell Yamamoto.

Both of them have different physical variables in play here Kershaw, his age, last now his various ailments that always seem to crop up. So I would want to see just exactly where they are. But if they get there with Otani Yamamoto and going forward where they are are now, of course yes, and then they're going to be in a really good spot.

Alex Vessia hitting the il one of the Dodgers' relievers, Ken, is this more of a situation in your opinion, that the kid just needs some rest, especially with the return of Tanner, Scott and Kirby Yettes Yates give him a blow a little bit. The Dodgers are pretty good about that whole phantom I l and the moving parts of giving guys rest when needed all.

Speaker 1: I can't believe you would suggest the team would use this phantom il, especially the Dodgers, But yes, they are quite good at that, getting their guys breathers at different times. Vessi has been used hard really all season, so yes, it would behoove them to give him a little bit of time off now.

Speaker 1: Yes, and the Brewer's entire season in a number of ways, of course. But if you remember at the start of the season, they basically had no pitching healthy. They had to do some weird things to start the season, and of course that crazy Yankee series happened, and then their pitching got really healthy, and I was writing quite a bit about their depth and how they can do some things to the deadline, and they ultimately traded in Estra Cortez Junior. Now they're in a situation where they're not so healthy and it's not horrible. They lost McGill to the IL yesterday with a flex restrain. He thinks it's not serious.

Speaker 1: But they signed Fetti because they had to pitch Aaron Ashby last night in place of Quinn Priester, who they had pushed back.

Speaker 1: They wanted Fetti to back up Aaron Ashby, which he did and did reasonably well. It was four to third innings tour and runs not bad. So they're in kind of an unusual state right now where they're a little bit in flux with their pitching. They've got Trisney ready to go. They've got Robert if you remember him. This is a talented dude. He is on a rehab assignment. He might be coming back. So they still have a really good position, or they're still in a really good position. Remember it's Freddie Peralta, it's the Miz, it's Brandon Woodruff. They're okay, and they've got a number of other bodies and a number of other relievers in the mix as well. But it's interesting that they're in this kind of uncertain spot right now at this moment with their pitching staff. Now for all that's going on with them, and they haven't played as well of late as well.

Speaker 1: Six games up for the best record in the National League, six games ahead of the Dodgers, and they also are six and a half games up on the Cubs, so they're in a comfortable or reasonably comfortable position.

Speaker 1: Anything can happen, but I like where the Brewers are, so they too, like the Dodgers, just have to get to the finish line and get their healthy with their pitching, and that is what they are trying to do.

Speaker 3: What is the biggest area of concern when you think about a flexsore strain with Tyler or McGill, I mean fifteen day il for him. Nothing too serious, that's what he says. Although when I think of flex sorece strain, I worry about that.

Speaker 1: And again, we'll just have to wait and see how this goes. But before we go out of this first segment, I want to show you something, Alana that is really cool. If the season ended today, here is how the postseason would look and there are some amazing matchup here. This is if the season ended today. So again, you don't know what's going to happen. The bye teams in the National League, the Brewers and the Dodgers.

Speaker 1: Mets at Phillies in the Wildcards, sorry, no city field. Padres at Cubs, that would be an amazing series. And for all the things the Cubs have gone through, I've got a better record than Padres. They've got one of the better records in the National League. It's right there with the Dodgers as well. So that's the National League. Now the American League.

Speaker 1: The buy teams, the Blue Jays and the Tigers. They're fairly comfortable. The blue Jays four game lead over the Red Sox, four and a half over the Yankees. They should get there. And in the wild card Mariners at Astros in the AL West Championship and Yankees at Red Sox in the AL East kind of consolation bracket.

Speaker 1: The one thing, as cool as these things are, first of all, they can change. Obviously, they can change. And the other part that's bugging me a little bit about this season, it's all kind of decided right now. We're not even in September, and I'm not talking about the matchups. I'm talking about we know who the twelve teams pretty much are going to be the Reds, Yes, they're still in it. The Royals, Yes they're still in it. Big series this weekend against the Tigers, another one coming up against the Mariners. But I just see the twelve teams we just listed as the most likely playoff draw.

Speaker 3: Ken In what universe would you have thought that the Tigers and the Blue Jays would have been the teams with the buye in the American League?

Speaker 1: Would not have thought that in any universe, Alna, But give both teams credit. Tigers have built, granted a big league in the AL Central and the Blue Jays this is a team that I have kind of doubted for a while now, and I've doubted them because they have not played to their talent level. They've not played to their ability. And yet this season, I would say they've exceeded their talent level. Now they've got some star players, but it's the role players who have really defined their season. I know Springers had to bounce back the year in Vladim Baschett's being great, but it's guys like Barger and all these other ones, Ernie Clement who have really defined them. And good for the Blue Jays, they're right there.

Speaker 3: Yeah, I feel finally the offense and the defense has surrounded the good pitching at some more complete team in terms of the Toronto Blue Jays. Speaker 1: They need a starter. I believe it's either tomorrow or Saturday, and Kyle Harrison is one candidate. Peyton Toley is another. Now, Peyton Tolly is kind of a two pitch guy, but he's extremely talented. And from talking to Red Sox people, you hear the David Price comparison from I believe two thousand and eight, Remember when David Price came up and was out of the bullpen in the playofs that was quite a weapon. The Red Sox are in a little bit of a funny place with their rotation. They're getting great work out of Crochet. Of course, he's a saw young candidate, as well as Brian Beao and Giolito fourth and fifth spots a little bit walk So Peyton toly is a guy that to me is really interesting. Kyle Harrison, who came over in the Devonstrate, has had some success in the major leagues. He's not been horrible, so he's going to get a shot too. I expect we're going to see both before the seasons over, and actually we'll see one of them most likely in the next.

It's all who can get us there and who is the best possible option for the postseason. And Walker Buehler he just was not that guy for them. So what happened with him taking him out? Of the rotation was not a surprise to him or anyone else who's been watching that team all year.

There's no more and let's give Frankie Montas a chance. I'm just using as an example. I know he's hurt right now, but we're not looking at that. We're looking at who is going to be the best guy on the mound that particular day. Nolan McClain has been an absolute revelation, stunning what he has accomplished so far.

You know, Bregman's not there anymore, Tucker's not there anymore. They've had a lot of injuries, yet there they are right at the top.

Because the Mariners, I've said this before, to me, they're like the Blue Jays, talented, but show me prove it, and they have not yet done that. They've not yet gotten over the hump. I don't know that winning the division would be what their fans would consider that to be, though certainly would be a step forward.

Any chance that he goes to Colorado or is another front office fit better for him.

Now, could he be a club president overseeing everything? I guess he's president based operations for the Cardinal. I don't know if it's that much of a distinction, but I would be surprised if he was the guy in Colorado simply because it seems to me from talking to him, from talking to others, he wants to take a step.

Speaker 3: Back, And wouldn't it be interesting for him to go to Colorado Ken just because that's a massive rebuild. I mean, I could see maybe an organization perhaps that has a little bit more they're a little bit closer to winning than maybe Colorado. Maybe that would be more intriguing for him if at all.

Speaker 1: Yeah, I would think you're right, Alta, that Colorado is such a difficult puzzle to solve. That coming off what he's coming off of a couple of really difficult years with the Cardinals. It's going to take a while for them to get where they want to be.

But we have not talked on this show about Michael Harris the second and his remarkable runaround with the Atlanta Braves. I want to show you the stats kind of before and after, because they illustrate just how far he has come. This was one of the worst offensive players in baseball, if not the worst, through July tenth. Two of five batting average five thirty nine OPS. Since July tenth, when he raised his hands over his head, he had them down around his chest three forty three batting average one point zero zero one ops. He is the dude of the last two months, actually two and a half months at this point. So Michael Harris, good for you. I always love it when players who were down kind of turn it around, and he's certainly done that in a big way.

I'm happy to see a young man that is making the most of the time that he's been given.

They've been an offensively challenged team really for most of the season. So I would say, Alana, they've got a slug. They've got to get great work out of their starters. I just don't know if they're going to have enough and if any of the team's currently in wild card position the Red Sox, Yankees, Mariners will slip enough for the Royals to come up. But I'm eager to see them this weekend against the Tigers in Kansas City.
