Scott Fowler back with us Charlotte Observers sports columnist. What's in worse shape? Carolina basketball, Carolina football?

Speaker 7: Well, Dan, first of all, you're nominated in my book. Absolutely, thank you, scon thank you. Sorry, I'm not getting any of those burritos. But I think the answer to that question is clear. Eighty five percent of those people are indeed right, football is worse off. I mean, whoever they hire here as a you know, as the basketball coach, this remains one of the five best jobs in college sports, and I have confidence that the program will return to some prominence. But right now it's obviously lost some luster. Really has How did that happen? You know, I think that's a good question. Gradually and then all at once. I think it became after Roy left. They have not quite figured out how to sustain it. You know, Hubert Davis had a great first year and the last four years have been sort of trying to recapture that magic. And the last these two first round exits in a row. And in today's environment, I don't think this would have happened twenty years ago. I don't think you get fired for something like this. And make no mistake, he was ousted. This was not Hubert, you know, a party of the ways. This was Hubert wanted to stay. But yeah, I think in today's climate it's very you know, a lot of impatience, a lot of donors and boosters with a lot of influence.

Speaker 2: And you're measured by the school eight miles down the road. And they made a seamless transition from their Hall of fame coach to john Shire. They've come up with incredible recruiting classes here. So having that the proximity, if I'm a donor, a booster, a collective, I'm only measuring North Carolina. I don't measuring North Carolina with anybody else in America, only with Duke.

Speaker 7: Scott, Absolutely, I think you're right on the money there, Dan, if Duke was in New York or something, you know, it doesn't it's not the same. But because that is the blue blood rivalry to end all rivalries around here, and Duke has been so darned good and they're good again, and they might win another championship. And plus now they they seem to have employ the best player and employee literally employed the best player in America. Like now, it's been two years in a row with Cooper Flag and Boozer, and Carolina had one of those players. And if Caleb Wilson hadn't gotten hurt, I'm not sure that Hubert Davis would have this would have happened, but it did. I was at the game in Greenville when they blew the nineteen point lead, and even then in the I was in that postgame press conference and asked one of those questions too, and oh it was. It was bad news. One of the one of the low points of press conferences I've ever seen.

Speaker 2: I let me give you what information I got this morning from a source saying I don't imagine Billy Donovan is in play, nor Brad Stevens, Tommy Lloyd at Arizona, johnsh Shirts at Saint Louis make sense. My source also threw in Michael Malone feels like a super creative capable option as well. Nat Oates feels like he's not controlling his situation. Todd Golden appears to be possessed by spirits.

Speaker 7: Well, it's a lot of fun to speculate. Right now. I can't tell you I know anything about really where they're going to go next? Uh, except and I wrote this today, uh in our in my Charlotte Observer column. It's got to be outside the family. Dan, There're just no There is no Roy Williams waiting in the wings inside the Carolina Blue umbrella. You have to expand. And all the people you're talking about are, you know, not in the really in the umbrella. But people always are like, oh, only you know I went to UNC. I don't need to have a UNC coach. Uh, you know somebody who know where the old well is. You just need to be able to win, and you have to be able to beat Duke, and you have to get out of the first weekend of the NCAA tournament every single year.

Speaker 7: I don't think terribly involved. I mean, he can, of course step in and help and be involved anytime he wants to be. But my conversations with Michael and I've seen a fair amount of him because he's so involved in his NASCAR team right now. He was you know, he won the big NASCAR trial here in Charlotte in December and now is one four of six races in NASCAR. I mean, that is that is where a lot of his focus lies. He wants them to get it right, obviously, But I don't think Michael Jordan is the man behind the curtain pulling the strings here.

Speaker 2: I think it's a great question. I would say Kansas because it feels like Kansas is not compared to anybody, because Carolina is compared to do and vice versa. And if you're Carolina right now, you're losing that battle in more ways than one. With Kansas, it's you're a standalone. They're both great jobs, but Kansas it feels like you're in the air, you know, in your area.

It's like when Darius Rutgers sent me his Grammy. I kept that for years until somebody from the Grammys voting committee saw it on the show and they said to Darius, you better get that back or you'll never get another Grammy. And so we had to. We had to overnight the Grammy to Darius. I mean it was serious because I kept going, oh, come on. There was some terse language directed at Darius. I don't think he's won another Grammy since then. But he got his gra He had it by his his nightstand and I said, dude, nobody's seeing that. Let me have your hooty in the Blowfish Grammy. And he sends it. We were proudly displaying him. Carson Palmer, he sent us his and then wanted it back. Yeah, PAULI, we're oh for six.

For North Carolina almost forty million dollars men's basketball operating expenses, Kansas at almost twenty million, Carolina at almost seventeen million. So there's a lot of money there because Kansas proud of its basketball team. Carolina proud of its basketball team as well. Give me the one thing that would make you change your opinion now that no games are played leading up to the draft, but what information changes where you slought somebody in the draft?

Speaker 16: Anything you hear from an interview, anything you hear about an injury late Dan could alter some things. Certainly at this stage of the game, you better know who can play and.

Speaker 16: It's all those little things that you could tweak it with. I'm coming up in another week with the top one fifty. You do that every year, and those rankings, I tell you, if you lose some sleepover and dan at the end of the day. So many players in this draft are within a range where you could go one way or the other. You're only splitting hairs. This is one of those drafts where you know, it's a lot of mixed opinion and there's very few positions where you have tremendous depth in the Day three, but wide receiver is one of those. And it's kind of separate forty five receivers dan and have draftable grades.

Speaker 3: But what is the one thing though that separates wide receivers.

Speaker 16: Well in this particular draft, when you look at the guys that at the production and the consistencay, hey, you got to catch the ball. And I understand people say, hey, you always have a couple drops that are concentration who catches the football and you also have to weigh in what was responsible for that? And you look at a Zachariah Branch, who I love. He went the goat to the gauntlet, he caught the ball at the combine, so effortless.

Speaker 8: Sleep Let's say, well, he had a couple of dry He's a bubble screen guy. He didn't throw the ball down the field.

Speaker 16: So it's how you view projecting a college player Dan into the NFL. And if you remember back not that long ago, Zay Flowers, Jordan Addison, Jackson Smith and Jigbo Offensive Player of the Year Quinton Johnson, they were all first rounders. There were some experts that none of them deserved to be in the first round.

Speaker 8: So all four turned three at a four turn that'd be great.

Speaker 16: So at the end of the day, mixed opinion reigns supreme this year more than other. And the other Dan that I can ever remember, because there's so many guys with very similar grades.

Speaker 8: And one little bit of information can swing it one way or the other.

Speaker 2: Is Fernando men Mendoza a great story or a great quarterback or both.

Speaker 16: Think he's a great story, he's a great quarterback. To see him what he did Cal, to watch him, and I did that the other day. I went back the sacks that he took and it was like forty one sacks at Cal and he goes to Indiana. He knows he has to improve on that, and he did. So that extra that year in college really benefited him. From that standpoint, Dan Layton plays, how consistent he was making the right decision late in a play was outstanding. The way he did under pressure in games. Let me say, well, they won in some cake walks, right. They didn't against Penn State, they didn't against Argon. There were games that were hotly contested. He had to make plays late. Iowas defense will frustrate the hell out of you, Dan, they really will. Phil Parker does a great job. Look what they did against Dante Moore. You know, you think about quarterbacks against Iowa, and again he did what he had to do late in that game. So for me, he answered every question that you had from cal to Indiana because we had great talent well go into the year. I know Omar Cooper Junior could be a first round receiver, Elijah Sharratz a good probably a third round receiver. You know, Roman heem Be came from Maryland, did a good job running the ball, and Kaylin Black did a good job as well, being at one two punch. But for me, Fernando Mendoza for what he did from start to finish with the pressure and in the playoffs stand eight touchdown passes, no picks, and a rushing touchdown, and he was at seventy five percent in the three biggest games of the year at the end of the season.

Speaker 2: If you were drafting him on what you saw at Cow, not Indiana, where would Mendoza go.

Speaker 16: Well, he probably you know, going into the year, you hoped he would improve. If you would have just come out after the Cow year, you probably would have been thinking maybe because of the talent that he had. He showed what he could do at col even when he had some situations that weren't benefiting the quarterback that he had to deal with. I'm talking about pressure from the defensive front. He's still probably would have been a second round pick, late first round pick. So he was a guy that people thought. I'm on people in the NFL. My friends in the league, Dan thought back in August he could be a guy to keep a close eye on. But there were other guys that were talking about arch Manning being the number one pick guaranteed. Yeah, you're talking about Sam Levitt coming off that great year at Arizona State, Leonora Sellers at South Carolina. Tons of quarterback were talked about a lot more than Ty Simpson from Alabama, and certainly Fernando Mendoza from Indiana. And now all of a sudden, I got Mendozo's number one of my big board. Dan and ty Simson's twenty five won my big board.

Speaker 2: Okay, that's a big disparity, one to twenty five. Dani Arrolovsky loves him some, Ty Simpson. What is Orlovsky seeing that? Maybe you're not seeing?

Speaker 8: Yeah, I know Dan when he explained it, and I just went back away. I would counter to that.

Speaker 16: You say, Okay, you know the factors that you have to look at closely. You know who's the bigger quarterback four inches nearly four inches taller, twenty five pounds heavier. You think about the experience, Dan, fifteen starts is a dangerous risky number for Ty Simpson.

Speaker 16: The seven eight quarterbacks that had below twenty starts, and look how they fared not well. So again that's a risky number. Fernando has thirty five starts, Dan, he had a completetion president seventy two percent. I was around sixty four percent. Seven rushing touchdowns for Fernando, two for Simpson. So you talk about accuracy, you talk about decision making.

Speaker 16: To see the field, dealing with pressure to have about expectations. Dan, when you're an Indiana quarterback and you roll through the year and you get to the playoffs, everybody's saying, after what happened last year, Okay, when you know Indiana had a great regular season, then you lose a notre name. Well, let's see if the Ana can finished the job. Now they're playing big time opponents. He did that with all that pressure. Then he wins the Heisman. Then he has to go win a national title.

Speaker 16: He always talked about cracking the code, and he is obsessed with that. He kind of has that Peyton Manning ability in that regard to just be so into what he's doing and studying.

Speaker 16: So I think if you look at comps, it would be kind of a Peyton Manning Matt Ryan comp for Fernando Mendoza. Dan explained that I don't agree. Everybody has their opinion. I was big on Shador Sanders last year, and I thought Shador played well this year.

Speaker 8: We'll see how it plays out. For Ty Simpson, I think with fifteen starts.

Speaker 16: Sure, I had sixty, but fifteen starts you need to have a chance to transition to the NFL.

Speaker 16: He had five straight games DAN where he had a fumble lost, and then he had another fumble loss which was a sixth against Indiana in the playoff game when he got hit by D'Angelo Pons and cracked that rib. So those are at an area he could have improved upon. He get sacked and coughing up. Can't do that in the NFL, where you're expected DAN in the NFL, and you guys know what you talk about every week, Guy is a bad game.

Speaker 16: You were scrutinized, you are picked apart and you're expected to play at a consistently high level every week in the NFL, and you don't get any free path because you're a rookie or a second year quarterback in this league, they will chew you up and spit you out before you can blink. You better be prepared to deal with that mental part as opposed to the physical part. Mendoza went back, got another year, improved in that key area.

He's the second best player in the draft behind Mendoza. For me, somethink that he's the best player in this draft. So again, he's more than worthy of being a top four certainly if he gets down to seven, it would be almost you know how long you have to wait for Washington to take that card up, because that would make perfect sense for them.
