Speaker 4: There were, there were many, many bullet points, but my my big takeaway was he still believes that he has a championship corps and that yeah, they're gonna do some tweak in and some changing and try to improve. But how big those changes are We're gonna find out, because so much hinges on their own, two in house free agents in Schwarber, in Real Mudo. But he still believes in the core, and it's about how this core performs. He he he said he has a team that's gonna come there next year and compete for world Championship. I think was something that was kind of the quote. And by expressing his faith in the team, I think he is basically saying, you know, the guys we got here are good enough. They just need to perform. And at one point in the news conference, I thought he kind of laid down a challenge for Bryce Harper, which we can get into later. But you know, I didn't, I'm not I didn't walk out of They're thinking that they're gonna blow this thing up or that they're going to have a huge remake, and I think they're gonna it's gonna the team that they show up with, in clear word, is gonna look a lot like this one. There'll be some changes, there'll be some substractions, there'll be a couple of young guys compete for jobs. But the fate, the October fate of this team is still going to be reliant on the big boys in the lineup that we're here this year and the starting pitching stuff that they're going to be bringing back, probably minus Ranger.

Speaker 3: So let me just let me make these comments as an ex GM and have some people understand the process a little bit from the perspective of being in the front office and having to make these decisions. You're a little bit like a president or a politician or a senator or whatever you want to call it. You cannot lay all your cards on the table because there's a lot of things factors that are associated with making some of these decisions. One, you want to you know, you want to maintain value of your players. So you can't say I'm going to move this guy and I'm going to change this and I'm going to change that because you devalue the the assets that you have. So that's one part of it. The other part of it is that you don't necessarily want to tell the whole world because you may have a different strategy or may have a totally different strategy than you're actually showing the world. You don't want to tell everybody all the things that you want to do, because then that also makes it more difficult to do the things you want to do. So there's a there is a fine line between being open and honest with the public and making sure that they understand.

Speaker 3: But there's also that fine line with making sure that you don't devalue some of the players and some of the assets that you have such that when you try to make change that you can still get value back for them and make change in a positive way.

Speaker 1: So what you're saying, Reuben is that he's not gonna come out. He didn't wasn't going to come out on Thursday and say, listen, guys, okay, we're going to try to trade Alec Boum again. If we can get something for him. We're gonna try to Alec Boum. And I'm telling it right now. We're gonna go on the off season very open minded about the outfit. We can have three new outfielders on opening day. Nick cast As is not coming back, although he kind of hinted at it in a sense what I thought, and I don't expect him back.

Speaker 3: Maybe other teams and have that that that value these other players, but you don't want to devalue them, and you want to make sure that you maximize your ability to make the moves that you need to make with the betterment of your organization. That's your job.

Speaker 4: And they may not have even you know, they I'm sure they have a bunch of different potential roadmaps. They might not have a a hard and fast roadmap yet, and I would offer Lozardo as proof of that. I don't think they went into last offseason saying we're gonna get Hasel Soizardo. I'm not sure they went into the last offseason saying we're going to try to improve our starting rotation because they had a good rotation.

Speaker 4: But that was that was something an opportunity that presented itself in December, and they were able to pounce on it. So you don't know what's gonna pop up in front of you. I don't know that they have a a like I said, a hard and fast roadmap yet, but I'm sure they have some ideas. There were some things that he was guarded about.

Speaker 4: You asked him about can you get out and spend more money on free agency? And he said, I don't know that I would answer that even if I could, But he also said because he didn't want to tip his hand.

Speaker 3: But he also said, we're not going to have a four hundred million dollar payroll. So I.

Speaker 4: Was able to glean some stuff out of that. But if you just know the roster, the inflexibility of the roster, the no trade closes, the high contracts, the huge contracts, the age of some of these guys, the point in their career where some of them are declining, you know it's going to be hard to have it all out shake up of this team. So when I come out of there thinking that there will be changes, But I don't know that they're going to be significant changes. And I hear him say he believes in this core. I tend to think this team is going to resemble what it looked like. You know, we get to clear what it's going to resemble the team that just was eliminated last week. I think there'll be changes around the edges. I think there'll be some changes, but I think it's going to look similar. The deciding factor, whether it's it's very different at all, is what happens with those in house free agents.

Speaker 1: Yeah, for sure, if you re signed Kyle Schwarber and JT, which they want to do because they're the best options. There's not anybody better than Kyle Schwarber on the market in my opinion, to be DH next season. And we've talked about this on Monday and Wednesday. There's and nobody better on the market to replace JT. He's thirty five, not a great year offensively, but.

Speaker 4: But if you don't get them back, you're going to have budget to spend, and now different guys will come in, And yes, there's some changes. Are they better, are they worse? What kind of changes I don't know, but then things could look significantly different if those guys.

Speaker 1: And he also talked a lot about the youngsters, Justin Crawford, Andrew Painter. He mentioned Otto Kemp, He mentioned Gabriel Rinconas Junior is a guy that can hit right handed pitching. He mentioned Aiden Miller at some point. So it sounds like those guys, I mean, will definitely be in the mix. It's you know, I would go and I would feel pretty good thinking that Justin Crawford and Andrew Painter are going to make this team out of out of spring training, fight a couple hundred bucks to spend.

I mean, who knows a lot of it depends on who they move, what assets they have, how they can, you know, what they can do in the offseason. I'm not gonna get totally into it because it's almost the end of the first pitch and Jim's gonna go into it. But when we finish this, we have more to talk about.

Speaker 1: Bryce Harper turned thirty three, and on Thursday morning, Dave Dombrowski talked a lot about Bryce Harper. He was asked about the season that he had and for those people that didn't hear what Dave said, I feel like I should read what he said. He was basically said, you know for BEDA, yeah, Bryce, Bryce, you know, so let's a little background. Bryce hit two sixty one this season, twenty seven homers, seventy five RBIs in eight forty four OPS. Now, that ops was twenty second best out of all qualified editors in baseball, but it was his lowest OPS since twenty sixteen, and he had his lowest OPS plus since twenty nineteen.

Speaker 1: About, you know, Bryce's season, he said, he's still a quality player. He's still an all Star caliber player. He didn't have an elite season like he has had in the past, and I guess we only find out if he becomes elite or he continues to be good. If you look around the league, I think Freddie Freeman, he's a really good player, right, he still is a good player. Is he elite like he was before? Probably not to the same extent. Freddy is a tremendous player, and that to me is Bryce, can he rise to the next level? Again, I don't really.

Speaker 1: He's the one that will dictate that more than anything anything else. I don't think he's content with the year that he had, and again, it wasn't a bad year. But when you think of Bryce Harper, you think of elite, right, you think of one of the top ten players in baseball, And I don't think it fit into that category. But again, very good player. I've seen guys at his age again, he's not old that level.

Speaker 4: It struck me. It struck me as a challenge. Not sure if it was premeditated. It was a very good question by the koaw Matt gil He said, was it a down year the start of a down turn in a career? And that was Dave's answer, and I thought it was I thought it was remarkable and it fits into what kind of what he You know, I took out of the press conference that there's still going to be relying on that main core and they need that main corps to perform under the bright lights and need that main core to be to take them where they want to go. And it just sounded like a bit of a challenge for one of the main guys in that main core, Bryce Harper. You know how, we'll see how he responds. He'll determine it. Still a good player, but you know not or a season wouldn't qualify as elite. I just thought it was a challenge. What does it sound like you.

Speaker 3: Rubin yeah, really interesting quotes. I think he was just being honest. Guys bother time, guess what, undefeated still and that doesn't mean that bright. I mean, he's been in the league a long time, he's not. Is he at his peak? Maybe not, but he's still a really excellent producer in the major leagues, no question about it. Is he a top five? Is he a top three? Is he at the level of the Aaron Judges and the shohey Otani's of the world. I mean the ops. You know, the numbers don't lie. Now, He's had to deal with some injury issues, position change, a lot of different stuff. But I mean, I guess there is a question as to whether or not he can get to that level. Again, I don't think that it's it that it can necessarily not happen. I think that he can. And it was just an interesting discussion that Dombrowski had about it. Does it sound like a challenge maybe a little bit. At the same time, I think he was just being honest. I think you were saying, hey, really great player, maybe not an elite player, and it's going to be incumbent upon other players to step forward and to do their jobs too. When you know, the World championship.

Speaker 8: When you win a world championship, it's not about the twenty it's not about three people, it's not about four players. It's about twenty six. He used to be twenty five.

Speaker 3: Now it's twenty six and even more than that, particularly over one hundred and sixty two game schedules. So I mean, it's not just about Bryce Harper. It's about everybody contributing, and it's pretty clear that other people are gonna have to step up. If people's production start to drop off, then others are gonna have to pick it up. And that's where I think the young players being infused into this organization at the major league level, is it gonna be something that's going to be fascinating to watch.

Speaker 4: It was kind of remarkable to hear what sounded like what I took in some real candor, right because it would have been easy for him to slough it off on injuries and and uh oh Bryce will be fine, blah blah blah blah blah. He he dove in a little bit. I thought it was kind of remarkable.

Speaker 1: Somebody did ask him about Bryce's wrist and that that question keeps coming up because when they clinched the NL East at Dodger Stadium, I remember talking to John Milton about Bryce He's like and then Bryce was playing He's been playing with a serious risk issue all season long, or you know, for most of the season. And then Jim, if I'm not mistaken, Kevin Long mentioned the risk as well, and he was on our show during the bye week.

Speaker 4: So but then, but he used that as a springboard to say what a good season Bryce.

Speaker 1: Because of the risk, because the risk keeps coming up. But then you talk to them and they said, no, he's fully healthy. There's it's not it's a non issue. He went into the off season one hundred percent healthy, no risk issues. So I don't know what what the truth is there you talk about challenges. It was also interesting Rob what Rob Thompson said about Bryce.

Speaker 3: Nothing wrong with that, I will say, I will say something about it. I do have some history, and I know a little bit about the you know, the risk and the issue. Not his in particular, but risks and backs are similar in that you just don't know how much it can affect your day to day process and production. Risks are really super tricky, especially with hitters, because what's the one thing that holds the back your hand, what is manipulating you know, the back your wrists. If you don't have that and you're not one hundred percent, it makes a huge difference. Same thing with your back and your core. If you don't have your back, you can't play sports. It's as simple as that. And so you have that combination. And in some ways, I'm not saying that that Bryce necessarily had back issues. I'm just saying those are the issues that can cause real changes in your ability to produce at the level that we respect of those players. So it is something to think about.

Speaker 1: I went and looked at because now you can measure bat speed. There's a stack caast can actually measure bat speed. So I went and looked at Bryce Harper's bat speed this season. His bat speed seventy four point two miles an hour. That's in the eighty first percent tile of all hitters in baseball. Now, that's that's the ninth top ninety percent of your swing. So if you take a check swing, they throw that out. So seventy four point two miles an hour. Last season, it was seventy four miles an hour eighty first percent hole. So it's virtually unchanged from last season two years ago was seventy five to five. But anyway, expected batting average this season to eighty last.

But we will be open minded to get better, make a move.

Sounds crazy, but I've watched Dave Dombrowski give guys like Andrew Bennettendi after being in the minor leagues for like a year or a year and a half or not even straight to the big leagues in Boston on a team that was supposed to content and did content and just threw them to the big leagues. So he's not afraid like people talk about.

Speaker 3: And this is what disappoints me a little bit about the fan base is that they think that David Emboski won't move guys to the big leagues, young players to the big He's not afraid to do that.

Speaker 3: Right and listen. They he's not afraid to do it. He don't do it, but he also has to make sure that these guys are ready to do it.

Speaker 4: And can I ask you guys, Can I ask you guys? Can I ask you guys a question? And I guess I don't. I don't think it'll happen because I think they value their own prospects. In this case, the two guys are referring to. I think they really valu you them a lot, and they're close to the big leagues. And times have changed over the last year and a half.
