00:00:28
Speaker 2: Broway, Well, welcome everyone in Kentucky Sports Radio, Monday, October thirteenth. I'm Matt Jones here on a cold day now, you're starting to feel like fall and winter is coming.

00:00:43
Speaker 3: Fall weather for sure.

00:00:44
Speaker 2: Yes, it is chilly. We are actually in studio today in Lexington, very rare. We'll be at the bar Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday. We are in Summrset on Friday, Yes, at Don Franklin. But we are here today in studio and you can give shall Naclarck's pub Chuck full line.

00:01:00
Speaker 4: That's eight Fi'm nine two eight oh twenty two eighty seven.

00:01:03
Speaker 2: A Vision Auto glass text machine seven seven, two four, five two five four.

00:01:07
Speaker 4: In this sision sponsored by the T. J. Smith Office, you call Tjhill, make them pay. So there's basically three things we could talk about. You got the football game, you got Big Blue Madness, you got Rick Patino and everything associated with it. So what I'm gonna do, just for sort of organizational purposes, I think we do football our one, Big Blue Madness Patino hour two. Does everybody good with that?

00:01:40
Speaker 3: I think that love that, that's the order.

00:01:41
Speaker 2: I think we do that because I don't want to spend the whole show complaining about football, which is what it would be, because I also can't we can't ignore losing at home for the second straight time to Vandy. So what we'll do is, if you call in, our one calls are football calls, and our two calls will be basketball. So eight five nine, twenty two eighty seven, I'm gonna the lines are open. I'm probably gonna use you all a little more than I normally would on a Monday show because I just want to hear people's thoughts. This is halfway through the year. This is a state of the program kind of moment, right, and it was it was bad Saturday. Ryan and I were talking before the game, and Ryan I, we didn't play well, but I can say if you just play normal, you win that game by seven to ten points. And what I mean is Dame Key gets two penalties on two different drives that if we don't get there's at least a field goal on those two drives. The one the personal foul and then the hold was that that wasn't Key who did the hold.

00:02:53
Speaker 3: It wasn't Dane on that one. We had eleven other penalties pick one of the holes, it seems like, but.

00:02:58
Speaker 2: Those were while we were in field goal range and they took us out of field goal, yes, okay, then two miss snaps that's four points, right, yes, and then getting to the half yard line and.

00:03:09
Speaker 3: Not scoring come out with zero points.

00:03:11
Speaker 4: So you add all that up. If you just do that, you win.

00:03:15
Speaker 2: But this is a horrible loss, and it's a horrible loss that I think is reflective Ryan, of just a confounding year or two with.

00:03:25
Speaker 3: Mark Studs, And it seems like it's the same issues that are coming up, you know, the penalties and the unsportsman like conduct penalties and things that are drive killers. It seems like we've been talking about this same thing the last couple of years. The stat that they're two and ten in their last twelve sec home games is just unacceptable and like, in use Stoop's word, it's embarrassing.

00:03:43
Speaker 4: Very embarrassing.

00:03:44
Speaker 5: That.

00:03:45
Speaker 6: And the record out of out of bye weeks is just mind blowing five and eight. It's so bad.

00:03:50
Speaker 3: I don't understand that. I can't figure out why they're so bad coming out of a bye week.

00:03:54
Speaker 6: Well, Stoops this time around. You know, normally he ignores anything when you're looking backwards, like say, you know this team won last year, He's like, I want to hear about last years, this team, this and that. But he admitted last week he's like, guys, we're this team is horrible out of at home in the last couple of years and horrible. And he said he was asking them like, what is the problem. Are you distracted at home? Are you getting too juiced up? It's like, even after when they lost to Vandy, he was searching for answers.

00:04:18
Speaker 2: He was clearly searching for answers his postgame comments with Marks with Tom Leach. Tom Leech said something like what do you what do you make of what happened? And he said, I don't know, which is interesting because it's not what people want to hear him say. But it's also I think, honest, I don't think he knows, Like I don't think he knows. If he knew what to do, they would change it, right, And nothing is particularly working, and it's all systems breakdown.

00:04:48
Speaker 4: And it's the same stuff.

00:04:49
Speaker 2: I mean, you could hear my postgame comments if you want, but I said, it's discipline, it's offensive line errors, and it's I continue to say kind of what I said last year. There's like an undeserved arrogance. And it's also just clock management and stupidity.

00:05:07
Speaker 4: I mean, the.

00:05:09
Speaker 2: Way we ended the first half. I mean even the penalty at the half yard line. To me, the most frustrating moment of the game is that penalty on the half yard Yes, because it was Mensie, right, I believe it was.

00:05:22
Speaker 6: I think on the gol on was Cox?

00:05:23
Speaker 4: Cox? Okay, well they both had two or three penalties each. Yeah, but let's say it's Cox.

00:05:31
Speaker 2: Chances are very high that play was a run up the middle from the half yard line. Cox and Mensi aren't even really gonna be all that involved in the play. The only thing you can't do there, well, besides fumble, the.

00:05:47
Speaker 4: Only thing you can't do there is get a false start.

00:05:50
Speaker 2: You could argue a false start from the half yard line is the worst penalty in sports because otherwise, you know, because even if you get it, then if you got a five yard on penalty on them, you only get half the distance.

00:06:00
Speaker 4: You'd only get to the two and a half. It's the worst penalty.

00:06:03
Speaker 2: You can get. It's the only thing you can't have happen and drew. It's happened twice this season.

00:06:10
Speaker 6: It's pretty amazing to get to the one yard line, have second one and to leave with zero points and there wasn't a turnover. Yeah, they somehow managed to not score at all because even after they moved back and couldn't find the end zone, had the you know, bobbled the snap on the fields goals, you somehow didn't score from the six inch line without the other team taking the ball from That's.

00:06:29
Speaker 2: I mean, and that's when I knew we were gonna lose. I mean, I'll be honest with you. That's when I said, well, this isn't gonna happen. And you know, part of my frustration is I do wonder I do wonder this, and I'm not I'm not trying to harp on something.

00:06:46
Speaker 4: You know.

00:06:46
Speaker 2: It's funny to me that a lot of my harshest critics during the Cal era are the harshest critics of Stoops during the Stoops era and say all the things or worse that I said about Cal that they said was the equivalent of me being Benedict Arnold they do about the footballs now. So I'm going to take the view of being the exact same with Stoops as I was with Cal. I said, I thought COVID changed with Cal the direction of the program.

00:07:12
Speaker 4: There was something different after it.

00:07:14
Speaker 2: I sort of wonder Ryan if his attitude and the reaction from the fans the pony up is that moment with Kentucky, that that I hear that that is texted to me during games twenty times a game when we're losing. I hear people say, I hear people say it coming out of the stadium, right like people will say that, people yell like. I wonder if this relationship between Stoops and the fans, which had been so close for so many years, he was almost used as the model, if that changed the way we look at it because now after being told you gotta show up, you gotta be loud, you got a pony up. Now, when they don't hold up there into the bargain, it feels like to people, Ryan, it hurts more.

00:08:05
Speaker 3: I was gonna say this. I was at the game and there was a guy yelling as Stoops was walking off the field. I share him. Glad I ponied up for this, coach, aren't you glad? We all pooned up for this? You know, I can't say the exact words he was saying, but but uh, yeah, you're right. I think it's some fans are now.

00:08:20
Speaker 4: Man, if the Stoops era ends, we'll look back as like that was the dividing.

00:08:27
Speaker 6: Yeah, he kind of gave the fans a little bit of a knife there to stab him with when things aren't going well. And it's not just the nil the fans have been showing up. That was a crazy atmosphere for a Vanderbilt game.

00:08:39
Speaker 4: It was I think.

00:08:40
Speaker 6: Back to years ago when you and I were sitting up there with Team Patrick and Vandy was empty, and to see what that what they brought Saturday night under the lights with the new light show they do and everything that goes with it. Tailgating was good. Stoops couldn't ask for a better setup for that to be a great night, and they just dropped from the moment it started.

00:08:59
Speaker 4: Yeah, all the things you'd want worry about letdowns with Vandy.

00:09:02
Speaker 2: The fans kind of helped ensure that didn't happen, and then the players still did it.

00:09:05
Speaker 5: Ye.

00:09:05
Speaker 2: And I'm not trying to say just the players, the staff. I put the staff on it. But the errors are.

00:09:13
Speaker 4: Like, it's not I think what so frustrating fans is this is not a talent issue this time. It was a talent issue for so long in this program. It's really not.

00:09:23
Speaker 2: I mean, we have offensive linemen like, okay, you're not very good, but just don't hold.

00:09:31
Speaker 4: Right, just start when the snap happens. I mean, just catch the snap right, don't bounce the snap. Yeah, I mean, though, just do those things.

00:09:45
Speaker 2: We probably still win, right, And it wasn't Brock's best game, but we didn't lose because of him. No, it wasn't the receiver's best game. I mean, Dame, that's a huge screw up.

00:09:56
Speaker 4: By day he had a huge game. Yeah, but it's a huge screw up. It was.

00:10:00
Speaker 2: I mean, we can't just overlook that. That's a huge screw up. I like Dane, but you cannot do that, especially once you're in the red zone. Like that's a selfish play and we've seen too many of those from Dayton Barry We just have now. At the same time, they can make catches. Yeah, that make you go. I mean that Barryon catch on the sideline was just insane, right, But it's not the talent and I think Drew that's what drives people the craziest.

00:10:29
Speaker 6: Yeah, I mean twelve penalties for one hundred and six yards twelve I mean at seven or eight in the first half.

00:10:35
Speaker 2: And as Pokoro said, that doesn't even include in the NFL, they include the yards of what would have happened in college. They don't do that. A couple of those penalties cost thirty to thirty five yards each, like it would be. It probably is one hundred and sixty or one hundred and seventy yards of actual damage.

00:10:53
Speaker 6: First drive, you had the Mensi hold and then Dane hitting the guy in the back of the head took them right out of the red zone, right on the edge of the.

00:10:59
Speaker 3: Barryon kick that did the kick returned bround brought it back by I having thirty five yards.

00:11:03
Speaker 4: I mean, we no offense to the guy, but we had one guy.

00:11:05
Speaker 2: Commit to backbreaking penalties on special teams, the same guy.

00:11:12
Speaker 6: I thought it looked pretty evident. Early in the game Vandy was trying to bait Kentucky into some of those foolish for I know, it's an intense atmosphere night game. You're fired off hadn't played in two weeks, but they almost have said. Look, they are trying to get these out of you. You're gonna have to keep your composure after.

00:11:27
Speaker 2: That's what we used to do. We used to try to get them like the other teams matter like. That was kind of in some ways, that Vandy team reminds me of the early Stoops teams punching above their weight, doing the little things right, waiting for you to screw up. I mean, this wasn't Vandy played Alabama punch for punch and beat him. That's not what happened here. No, they played good, but we beat like, you know, gained them. We outgate like we were equal to or better, but we beat ourselves.

00:12:04
Speaker 4: We did what we used to do to other teams.

00:12:07
Speaker 3: If you told me before the game, our debs was going to hold them to twenty. I thought we're gonna win.

00:12:11
Speaker 2: The game if you had told I said twenty all, we gotta do score more than twenty and we didn't. And this is the stat that gets me the most frustrated. Since twenty eighteen, teams playing Vandy in the SEC SEC have scored over thirteen points every single game. We're the first team since twenty eighteen to not score thirteen points more or to score more than thirteen against Vandy. Well, then you deserve to lose. You deserve to lose. Congrats to you, Shannon.

00:12:45
Speaker 7: Well, I didn't do anything.

00:12:48
Speaker 4: It is your team, are you mean?

00:12:50
Speaker 3: No?

00:12:50
Speaker 7: I mean you know, I kind of have a mixed emotions about the game.

00:12:54
Speaker 4: Nobody cares about their team less than Shannon. He's a Vandy fan.

00:12:58
Speaker 7: That's like eh NO was celebrating when they beat Alabama last week.

00:13:02
Speaker 4: But this one gives you makes you melancholy?

00:13:04
Speaker 7: Right, Well, I like both both programs.

00:13:06
Speaker 4: I understand that.

00:13:07
Speaker 2: Well, eight five, nine, two eighty seven, we already have full lines.

00:13:11
Speaker 4: I'm gonna let you all give your opinion and talk. We'll get more of this game and then the second hour we'll talk basketball, big.

00:13:17
Speaker 2: Blue mind as Patino, et cetera. It's Kentucky Sports Radio. It is a party eight five, twenty two eighty seven. It wasn't much of a party though.

00:13:28
Speaker 3: Drew's right, though the atmosphere at the game was awesome and our fans showed up.

00:13:33
Speaker 7: And absolutely did their part.

00:13:34
Speaker 4: There's no there were more people we had the That was the most people we've had at the bar since pre COVID like a pregame show. I mean, there were people. Unfortunately, you know, we didn't get the turn as much because people were just sitting there and enjoying the atmosphere, so a lot of people didn't get in. But like, I was amazing how many people were there and we had so many breakdowns of equipment. They got to see me, uh, they got to see me frustrate. They got to see me bleed, which I'm sure a lot of them were really happy. You about my Really it was a blood sweating tears it was. There was a lot going on. Let's go to Justin. What's up?

00:14:09
Speaker 8: Justin?

00:14:12
Speaker 5: Yes, I didn't know exactly what I was going to say when I called, but there's.

00:14:15
Speaker 4: I'm frust I've been I've been.

00:14:19
Speaker 5: I've been to plenty of games. I've put in, just like many of the other fans put in time, money, and effort to be at those games. I'm tired of all the crap. I'm tired of the undisciplined. To be honest, a lot of this is on the coaching. How do you, year after year after year, have all these penalties, the unsportsmanlike conduct. How do you put a ball in a player's face? This game was important for us, as the fans, as the program. I'm tired. I'm sick of all. I mean, it's not the offensive coordinator at this point stupid.

00:14:53
Speaker 2: That anymore. I mean, you really can't justin and I appreciate the call. You can't say the offense cord Liam Cohen is killing it at Tampa.

00:15:00
Speaker 4: He's killing it as much as I dislike Shannon Dawson.

00:15:03
Speaker 2: He's the offensive coordinator at Miami, which is undefeated right now, right, I mean, Skangarello works have been working in the NFL since he left here, Like, we can't. It's you can't put it on Bush Hampden. You just can't. Like I'm not saying he's the best offensive coordinating in the world, but honestly, how could we even know, Like, because the guys when they leave here, let's be real, they do well.

00:15:28
Speaker 4: So like, what are we supposed to say this morning?

00:15:31
Speaker 6: I'm trying to write about the Vandy loss, and I'll look up in Good Morning Football is naming Liam Cohen their coach of the week in the NFL week He I mean, he is kind of the talk of the NFL, at least in the coordinator realm of how good he's doing in Tampa. And then we're having to look up and see Kentucky has four touchdowns in four sec games.

00:15:49
Speaker 4: He's gonna be a head coach soon.

00:15:50
Speaker 3: Yeah, they had fifty points yesterday, didn't they the Buccaneers?

00:15:52
Speaker 2: And I mean so and the discipline, I mean, Ryan, I don't want to put you on the spot, but why you think something like happened with Dane?

00:16:01
Speaker 4: Why does that happen? You think?

00:16:03
Speaker 3: I think there's a lot of john In talking going on, And sometimes I think, when you.

00:16:07
Speaker 4: Why do you think it gets to us more than it gets to the other team?

00:16:12
Speaker 3: I don't know. I mean, it was it was obviously it was a bad penalty. There's no doubt about it. It was a bad penalty. But we had, like you said, we had twelve penalties. It's and then this is not the first game, and we've had a multiple, multiple multiple penalties that kill kill drives.

00:16:26
Speaker 2: I mean the false starts in the holes. Seriously, I mean I let them go. Well, a couple of times the holes.

00:16:33
Speaker 4: Were played, it wouldn't have even mattered, Like it's after the play had left. I they got and all.

00:16:38
Speaker 2: Of those holes were legit. Honestly, I don't mean to be rude to our offensive tackles, but I watched because I had someone text me and go.

00:16:47
Speaker 4: They only called the holds on us. They could have called three or they could have called ten more on those guys they hold every play because they get beat every play.

00:16:58
Speaker 6: I mean, none of them have been good. But Cox is like seventh year senior, had a pretty decent year last year. He's kind of regressed age.

00:17:08
Speaker 2: He's just his knees are shot, which means they don't think they have anybody like that. So that in some ways I Himpecal just what I know about his situation.

00:17:18
Speaker 4: I can't get mad at him. I do think he's doing the best he can. His knees are just shot, and they now the problem is that why is there nobody else that can play?

00:17:26
Speaker 6: And Cortland Ford was a good addition. We haven't really seen him this.

00:17:29
Speaker 2: Year and him so that's on the coach, that's on the depth the offensive line coaching. I can't really blame him because from what I understand, like he just he can't move.

00:17:39
Speaker 6: Yeah, because he did look better last year and this made critical mistake so far.

00:17:42
Speaker 4: Let's go to Richard. What's up Richard?

00:17:45
Speaker 9: Well, I've watched him all year and we've got a great defense.

00:17:53
Speaker 4: Yeah we do.

00:17:54
Speaker 9: We've just got an average offense and we're playing in the SCS just where it is. And all by the way, with the midnight madness, I loved it.

00:18:07
Speaker 4: Second action, that's a second.

00:18:09
Speaker 9: Then it was great. First time I being to the trick left all I got.

00:18:15
Speaker 4: Thank you, sir, thank you. There you go the whole weekend.

00:18:19
Speaker 2: There's gonna be a lot of that in terms of when wef how people look at Tyler.

00:18:22
Speaker 10: Go ahead, Tyler, hey sort of entertaining on the second hour. Can I hang on to the second hour if you.

00:18:29
Speaker 2: Want to, Tyler, I got it to hang on Taylor's If Tyler wants to hang that long I'll let him do it.

00:18:37
Speaker 4: We got other lines, Joseph. Go ahead, Joseph.

00:18:41
Speaker 11: Yeah. People complaining that they only call hold on us is like when a political candidate says they only fact check me.

00:18:48
Speaker 4: I agree with that. Actually, yes, that's a similar I do think that's a similar analogy.

00:18:55
Speaker 11: So I called in after the whole Miss game and I said, you know what, Stoops is the hell the football coach. And I still believe that. But I think his issues are so glaring that they are difficult to overcome sometimes. And this was a good example this past weekend. You know, I have a mutual who knows Liam Cohen, and through the grapevine, Liam Cohen was very upset about overall discipline in the UK football program, not just like off the field stuff, just like in the locker room, on the practice field, on the field. He just didn't feel like he had control of anything.

00:19:37
Speaker 4: I think there was on that point. Joseph, I think, and now again, I can't say this is true this year because I have not heard one way or the other this year.

00:19:46
Speaker 2: I don't think there's any doubt. And I think you guys, Drew Ryan would agree there was a significant issue of people feeling like the program had gotten out of control last year. Now, I I have not honestly heard whether it was better or worse, because a lot of that stuff comes out during the summer and I wasn't here. But is it fair to say that that was definitely a concern last year?

00:20:09
Speaker 6: Oh yeah, oh yeah. And I think Stoops has had a problem for a while. I think sometimes the stars guys having a good season, they might get away with a little more than someone flow down the depth chart, and that just creates a little tension in meetings. And He's done so good, and you hear players talk about how he gives them so many freedoms, but I think sometimes that freedom can cross over into what they need to be doing at practice.

00:20:28
Speaker 4: The knucklehead theory, it is the knucklehead theory.

00:20:31
Speaker 2: I mean, it's Cal's greatest gift for me, is the knucklehead theory. I can have one knucklehead, I can't have two. In football, you can.

00:20:40
Speaker 4: Have one guy, or maybe even a couple guys, But when it becomes a significant part of your locker room, it hurts you.

00:20:47
Speaker 2: And I got the sense, at least last year Joseph that that was an issue. I can't speak to this year. But go ahead.

00:20:55
Speaker 11: Yeah, I think it's just kind of been all the way through the program since he's been here, mostly for the moment.

00:21:00
Speaker 10: You know.

00:21:00
Speaker 11: But to the last caller and I'll let you go. He said, we have an average offense. We're ranked one hundred and sixteenth out of one hundred and thirty three. That's not average, that's putred.

00:21:10
Speaker 2: It is future, and it's future with I think good players like I'm not sure if brought how good brought vandergriff Is.

00:21:15
Speaker 4: I don't I appreciate the call. I don't.

00:21:16
Speaker 2: I'm not saying he's great, but I also don't think he's terrible. And our running backs are fine. Our receivers in theory should be really good. It's there's no excuse for our offense to be as kind of mid fair to middling or worse.

00:21:34
Speaker 3: Like you said, four touchdowns and four SEC games we've had, I mean, that's some point.

00:21:37
Speaker 4: Against van we had.

00:21:38
Speaker 3: One touchdown in the first half, one touchdown in the second.

00:21:40
Speaker 4: Half, and we doubled the other three games combined.

00:21:43
Speaker 6: Yeah, and two of those are home games to Vandy in South Carolina.

00:21:45
Speaker 4: Yeah, Mark got about a minute, go ahead, Mark.

00:21:50
Speaker 10: Man, it's just the frustration from the fans. It's where the issues at now because you go down to Florida and lose it.

00:22:00
Speaker 4: Florida, Yeah, which we're now not a favorite.

00:22:02
Speaker 10: You have Auburn, you have a night game at Auburn. With Auburn, you're not gonna have anybody there. We were there at a Saturday.

00:22:12
Speaker 4: But you won't do that. You won't do that in two weeks.

00:22:16
Speaker 10: If we don't show up and play against Florida. I don't know that I will. You know, we got we had somebody walk by and tell us that they're going to start selling the parking spots preserve spots now all spots will go up.

00:22:29
Speaker 4: Yeah, that would be a mistake.

00:22:31
Speaker 10: You can't do that now. I'm not we started tailgating for every game this year.

00:22:39
Speaker 2: Well just cut somebody saying it just becut somebody saying it doesn't mean it's true.

00:22:43
Speaker 4: Just for the record.

00:22:44
Speaker 10: I mean, they're talking about this.

00:22:46
Speaker 4: This was k fun.

00:22:47
Speaker 10: They're talking about it.

00:22:47
Speaker 4: This was That would be a mistake. I would I think that would be a big mistake. I appreciate the call. We're gonna take a break and come right back. KSR TJ. Smith Personal injury attorney, call TJ He'll make them pay no.

00:23:04
Speaker 7: Mortgage. Here's Matt Jones.

00:23:07
Speaker 4: It's not good, Shandon.

00:23:09
Speaker 2: The good thing about being in studio is I can sing and it's at least on beat because it's not there's.

00:23:15
Speaker 7: Not a delay on bat, but maybe not on key.

00:23:19
Speaker 4: First of all, I don't want to hear that.

00:23:22
Speaker 2: But still the people like listening on podcasts don't hear the music, right right? I love Mark chess Dot. I'm not gonna lie to you. I mean like it's just me and you, Shandon. Where they're were the two people from Mark chest.

00:23:35
Speaker 7: We get a Mark chest Nut John Anderson tour, I'd.

00:23:37
Speaker 4: Be there, I'd be there. Are they both alive?

00:23:40
Speaker 7: Yeah?

00:23:40
Speaker 4: Yeah?

00:23:40
Speaker 7: John Anderson is mar.

00:23:42
Speaker 4: Mark chest Nut alive? I think he died, didn't he know? He didn't?

00:23:44
Speaker 7: Don't kill him.

00:23:45
Speaker 2: I don't want him to be dead. I'd like to go see him playing. I'm not trying to kill him. I like Mark chest I'm still he's still alive.

00:23:53
Speaker 4: Good, can't confirm. Let's do Mark chest Nut and John Anderson together.

00:23:56
Speaker 2: If you're a Mark Chestnut fan seven seven seven seven four five two five four, are Shannon and I the only two go ahead and play another March Chestnuts on the next step work, I'll think of something that's the one I like a lot.

00:24:09
Speaker 4: If I'm not no, I was serious.

00:24:15
Speaker 2: I honestly I fail for that, and I know the name of the song, and I still fel for it. What person writes, Matt Stoops needs to be held accountable, don't you agree?

00:24:25
Speaker 4: Well, what does that mean? I mean, this is ultimately I feel like we're in the same spot we were in with John cal Perry last year, although I don't think things are as I don't think Stoops is as gone with the fan base as cal was.

00:24:38
Speaker 2: But you know, I mean, this is just the reality. People need to understand. He can't be fired. We don't have the money even if you wanted him to, and I don't. I don't think we're anywhere close to that. But if you did, we can't fay that they don't have him money because the biot's too high. So like, that's what makes it frustrating, because I don't really I mean, Pete, when you hear people say that, that's nice, they can say that if they want, but it's kind of a meaningless thing. It's sort of like I wish we didn't have to have roads and we could all walk.

00:25:13
Speaker 4: In the sky.

00:25:14
Speaker 2: Okay, well that would be nice, but it's not realistic. So now what.

00:25:21
Speaker 3: I'm wearing my Stoops Troops shirt today, I'm still on board. I mean, we were just one week away from them having the best road win, road win of his tenure here, and he went down to Old Miss and beat a good old Mystery?

00:25:31
Speaker 4: Has that happened? Why do we have.

00:25:34
Speaker 2: South Carolina bomb great performance against Georgia?

00:25:39
Speaker 4: Yes, best road win of the era against Van Okay, I don't.

00:25:44
Speaker 3: I don't have an answer.

00:25:45
Speaker 6: Why does that happen? What is going up with something? At home? We keep talking about how good the crowds are. It's not like they're not getting a home field advantage. Stoops even was wondering. He was like, are there problems with tickets? I mean, he was going so far down the list, It's like, what are your distractions? Do you have too much family here? But I mean that's how far he's down, wondering what's going wrong of how they're off at home?

00:26:05
Speaker 4: In all these games out of ten at home, it's terrible.

00:26:08
Speaker 6: I'm believing two and ten in the last wie at home is.

00:26:10
Speaker 2: Crazy and they do. Look, I mean I was at Old Miss. They did look looser and kind of maybe there's something about.

00:26:16
Speaker 3: Well, you know, Jared London used to say that he goes we used to love playing road games because when.

00:26:20
Speaker 4: You say you love to play at noon on the road because as your home locus.

00:26:25
Speaker 3: Yeah, just on football when you're on the road.

00:26:27
Speaker 4: Yeah.

00:26:28
Speaker 6: We still haven't gotten to my biggest complaint from the game.

00:26:30
Speaker 4: What is that.

00:26:32
Speaker 6: The end of the half? I'm just gonna stop watching Kentucky football at the end of the second quarter. How do you get a first down in a tie game with two minutes left and you go into the locker room fourteen to seven down to touchdown? How do they even get the ballpack? And then so they got the ball back because you threw three straight in completions? How do you give up sixty yards for a touchdown and that short amount of time.

00:26:54
Speaker 4: Look, I actually went back and watched the last two minutes because I'm a glutton for punishment.

00:27:00
Speaker 2: I can make a defense of his play calls. I won't do it right now because it's boring, but I could. I can't make a defense of it's third and eighteen. All you gotta do is stop him and you hold him to a field goal and you let him go for a touchdown.

00:27:15
Speaker 4: Like that's how do they do that?

00:27:17
Speaker 6: Yeah, it wasn't the usual recipe where they just bobble you know what they're doing, don't know what they're doing. But still the fact that you have the ball with a first down and two minutes to halftime and you go in down a touchdown, I agree, it just can't happen, and then you lose by seven.

00:27:30
Speaker 2: And I think the reason they threw it three times, states to that question is in part because they get ball first ball in the second half and so you're trying to put points on it, and if we just ran it up the middle three times, people are going so like. But I think Jordan Rodgers made a great point, which was on first down you could have handed it off because you got the two.

00:27:49
Speaker 6: Minute warning, yes, right, and Willcox had just broken in fifteen yard run and if he gets five or six yards on first down, your play calling looks completely different on second and third and you probably move the ball on So, I mean it was different than the usual mistakes, but it's still you're giving up a touchdown.

00:28:03
Speaker 4: Does a really good job he does, and Tom and Cole they do a really good job. Nathan go ahead and Nathan.

00:28:08
Speaker 12: Hey, guys, so i've students. Isn't there yet, but he's getting to like a colpoint where where people are just starting to get frustrated with him. He's he says he's going to change, he acts like he's going to change, but then ultimately the overall he doesn't change. And luckily Cal had history of Kentucky basketball being great, so people weren't going to give up. If he doesn't change, and he doesn't and he doesn't actually take analytics into consideration and time management and all this stuff, then people are just going to give up. And where he's gonna stop getting money, he's gonna stop getting everything he needs because because Kentucky football ultimately doesn't have the history of greatness that that people care.

00:28:54
Speaker 4: I agree that we have.

00:28:55
Speaker 12: A new and we have a new.

00:28:57
Speaker 8: Coaching such spirit, and it's the exact opposite of the problem Cal dealt with, which is he had a coach in football that made it to people who are like, you've lost touch with us, act like stoops and now you're gonna have a sense where people go, we're not doing well in football.

00:29:17
Speaker 4: Mark Pope's so much fun.

00:29:18
Speaker 2: And I think you're right, it's almost the exact it's the exact opposite scenario.

00:29:23
Speaker 12: Also, it's also funny that that's I mean, you anys he knew Stoops did not like Col, and it's it's so weird that he's just being like Col right now by not changing.

00:29:36
Speaker 4: Yeah, I appreciate the call. Stoops is a lot more like will blame himself for stuff. I think they have problems that are similar, but they're not similar people.

00:29:48
Speaker 2: And I don't know exactly how to articulate that. I don't think Stoops's problem is so much stubbornness in the way it was with Cal, but it is a not willing to change because he just won't the next Like it's like the person that drives a car that is so nervous not to wreck that it almost makes it more likely they wreck. Does that make sense?

00:30:11
Speaker 3: And so you're saying, like, maybe early in his tenure he was more willing to drive, like maybe cause a wreck.

00:30:16
Speaker 4: And I don't think he.

00:30:16
Speaker 2: Had as much confidence in himself back then, and so he was, you know, he was very careful. He was willing to listen to people. He was the underdog, and now he has a lot of confidence in how he does it. He believes this mindset works, and he's got two hands on the wheel and he's completely straight ahead. But now he's driving so slow that he might cause a wreck by going too slow.

00:30:37
Speaker 6: Are you saying he's in the fast lane going slow with there's left blinker on?

00:30:40
Speaker 2: And yeah, he's Daryl Walter at the end of his NASCAR career with the left blinker on going just.

00:30:45
Speaker 4: Going by everybody like you just gotta I don't know.

00:30:48
Speaker 6: I think there's some in those comparisons. There's something with just their energy too, and which you can understand. Cal fifteen years Stoops twelve. It's natural for any of them calliums of it when he got here, right, But I think we're seeing Stoops just not having as much gas as he did too, which is you can understand what's up for it.

00:31:06
Speaker 11: Hey went to bed. I couldn't go to bed because I was mad as a hornet, So I said, up until four o'clock in the morning, plugging some numbers into a spreadsheet, and I have some data for you, all right.

00:31:14
Speaker 6: Wow, Okay, I have some fun for the rest of us.

00:31:17
Speaker 11: Yeah, every five years on average, we win an extra game every year.

00:31:24
Speaker 10: On average, our.

00:31:25
Speaker 11: Recruiting class is one better than the next guy, all the while the SEC gets ten percent better. That was my finding.

00:31:33
Speaker 2: So you're saying, we get we have gotten better, but the SEC has gotten better at a rate higher than us.

00:31:40
Speaker 11: Yes, but also we're getting better while the SEC is getting better. So take it as you will. My question for you guys today is we're obviously improving as a program. We're getting better talent. Do you all think that the discontinuities and some of the turnover and the staff is affecting player to.

00:32:00
Speaker 2: No, Well maybe, but you just have to deal with that. That happens everywhere. Go ask Nick Saban about how he was and keeping his staff together. I mean, like, guys, when you're successful, they're gonna come get your coaches. So yeah, but that happens everywhere, and you just have to get over. I mean, we've actually had excuse me, amazing continuity at defensive coordinator over the years.

00:32:20
Speaker 4: Yes, much more than other programs exactly.

00:32:25
Speaker 2: But you there's no way I appreciate the call to be a good program and not have turnover.

00:32:30
Speaker 3: Oscar Comes told me one time. It's a good thing. If other schools are coming after our football coaches, that means we've had great success.

00:32:38
Speaker 2: We yeah, I mean and and good programs. They get over it. Yeah right, good programs. The next thing, you know, they get through it and they're able to have success. If you're looking for a great new home where you'll enjoy watching the games, how about the Bluegrass Home Center.

00:32:56
Speaker 3: Run tell me about it.

00:32:57
Speaker 4: Family owned business specialized in the meeting the needs of home buyers with a standard built single section and multi section homes two three, four, five bedrooms. That's right, you can have as many as you want. They also have dry wall with real cabinets and upgraded features. Homes as low as forty eight nine includes delivery and installation. Check them out in London two forty one Rudy Bear Roads six six two one five thirty three hundred. It's the Bluegrass Home Center. You take a break, be right back. One more football segment, then we're gonna go to the round ball. It's Kentucky Sports rate. So good, isn't it? Shannon? Oh yeah, you know, I like any song where that somebody's voice goes hmmm.

00:33:41
Speaker 7: That's like every John Anderson's aar.

00:33:43
Speaker 4: I know. That's why I like them.

00:33:44
Speaker 2: They don't do that anymore, like you don't hear the the Luke Brian's go.

00:33:50
Speaker 4: But by no sounds just like Mark.

00:33:56
Speaker 2: I always love that. I'm nine two eighth, twenty two eight. He's playing in renfro Alley in November.

00:34:01
Speaker 4: If you want to marches is s mart test Nut Yeah, okay, Chandeer Tennis are if we mentioned somebody from the eighties, they're playing in Renfau Valley sometime in the next three he did that was Joe Diffy.

00:34:13
Speaker 2: They're all doing it, Sammy Kershaw, Johnny Anderson, They're all.

00:34:17
Speaker 4: In Renfo Valley at some point.

00:34:19
Speaker 2: Uh, let's go to Sean from Austin. Go ahead, Sean.

00:34:23
Speaker 13: Yeah, Hey guys, loving Longhorns and I'm still a Cat's fan here. But you know, this is a discipline. I don't just want to give you thirty seconds on discipline, army guy. Look you, discipline is a function of fear and if if if you're not disciplined, then it's like you got to be afraid of what's going to happen if you if you mess up right like Stoops should be filling up puke buckets today?

00:34:47
Speaker 2: Do you I mean, do you think that's I know, that's kind of the military mindset, which is that what you just said, the kind of you've got to be afraid about? What do you think that's? Does that have to be true to have discipline like or can you have this like? I don't know that discipline and fear have to go hand in hand or do you think they there's.

00:35:06
Speaker 13: A reason why that they train like that, particularly in the combat arms and the infantry field, that that these guys are machines right and they're doing battle right, they're in the trenches, and you lose your thought, you lose your brain and becomes reflex and instinct.

00:35:20
Speaker 11: That's where training comes in.

00:35:23
Speaker 4: Brain.

00:35:24
Speaker 13: You have to you have to make sure that you know again the guys, you know that they they know what their job is and they can't make these mistakes, right, they can't make these mistakes. And last thing on on on being a leader and instilling that discipline. You know, there's there's really two kinds of leaders in the infantry, right, you got a nice guy and then.

00:35:40
Speaker 4: You got a hole.

00:35:42
Speaker 13: And I was always told when you come in as a new lieutenant and the infantry in petunity, or you've got to be an a hole because it's easier becoming an a hole and then become a nice guy later. You can't come in a nice guy and then flip the other switch, right, Love you guys.

00:35:56
Speaker 4: I appreciate the call. That's an interesting, interesting mindset. I don't know. I'm not sure that totally applies to football, but maybe a little bit. Corey, go ahead, Corey.

00:36:07
Speaker 14: Hey, Matt, how's it going good?

00:36:09
Speaker 4: What's going on?

00:36:11
Speaker 14: Well? Listen. If anyone wants to hear any positivity or someone looking on the bright side, then you may not want to listen to my call.

00:36:20
Speaker 15: But I listened to Philip.

00:36:21
Speaker 4: Of course.

00:36:22
Speaker 14: I listened to Philip calling to the postgame show on Saturday night, and he said, he drives three hours with you.

00:36:28
Speaker 4: Let me explain to people what that was.

00:36:30
Speaker 2: So Philip was a is a coal miner who called the postgame show was late at nights. You might not have heard it said, he drives back and forth three hours to the game with his son. He saves up all year for season tickets. It's the one UK football or one UK sports thing he thinks he can afford. He shares it with his son, and he called in and kind of expressed his disappointment that clip is online. Mario has put it out, But what's your response to it.

00:36:56
Speaker 14: Well, I mean I listened to it and broke my heart. And you know, I was thin, and you know, my dad, he didn't have a son, but he had me. And we're from I'm from Campbellsville, Kentucky. We drove an hour and a half to every game during the during the Jerry Clayburne and Bill Curry years, which I don't have to remind everyone what those were like. And then we listened to the postgame show on the way home, and I was just thinking about how, you know, now that I'm forty four, my dad's seventy, I don't remember that. I don't remember those exact scores, but I remember that time with my dad, and I think that's what Phillipson is probably going to remember. I mean, I'm not going to tell anyone how to feel about losing to Vandy at home, but you know, coming to these Kentucky games, I remember our section. We got to be best friends with all the people around us, the guys in the blue coats, and that's what you know, that's what Kentucky football is all about. And so I just I hope everyone, you know, if we if we went down in the swamp next weekend and then we beat Auburn at home, then we are five and three going into Tennessee and feeling good. And I mean, I just hope everyone keeps showing up. I hope everyone keeps supporting these guys. I mean, anything can happen. Cal's gone, Betino's back.

00:38:06
Speaker 12: You know you do.

00:38:08
Speaker 4: It's a weird world. You never know.

00:38:10
Speaker 2: Well, Corey, I appreciate it, and I'm glad you brought up that call. Appreciate the call. I'm that call really did affect me as well. I went back and watched it a couple times after Mario posted the video, and I do think it really was symbolic about what is great about Kentucky football. It is more accessible to the average fan than basketball is in some ways, at least in person. And it goes a little bit to that call earlier about the tailgate. UK has got to make sure and its desire to make money, they don't get away from that. I mean, somebody just sent me this. I don't know if this is true, but this is a person that usually has pretty good knowledge. It says that the K Fund is considering taking away large areas of green space from fans that tailgate to make people pay to set up the tailgates around the area, and that it might call and that they actually will take some away to sell to corporate tailgates that will cost one thousand dollars a game. That's a huge mistake if you do that, a huge mistake. And you know selfishly as a business owner, it has been good for me that the tailgate scene has gotten worse because more and more people are using our bar as the tailgate scene. But that's still bad because there's only we can only hold so many people, right, Like you can't get away from what that. I would ask UK when they make football decisions to go back and hear that call from the guy on the postgame show or even what Corey just said and think about, like it's not just about the people that sit in those seats at makers Mark who I saw the picture halfway through the fourth quarter. Those seats were empty at the end of the game, Like, it's not about that, It's about the men and women that drive from three hours away and who make the trip and who got home at three thirty or four in the morning. Don't get away from that. Stoops has done a pretty good job remembering those people. Now, let's put a product on the field, and let's end the administration consider those people.

00:40:07
Speaker 4: When Drew we make our decisions.

00:40:09
Speaker 6: And remember you just started asking those same people to pay for your players to exactly. I mean, you're exculate from money from fans in every which direction to go in several different pots. At some point of fans just gonna say I cannot afford this. And as we heard from the coal miner, there's a lot of fans out there. They're already stretched thin, just trying to have a fun weekend with their family.

00:40:28
Speaker 2: And that's why the pony up honestly bothered me, because what else do you want these people to do? I mean, no group of people has given more with less reward than Kentucky football fans. I mean, I think that's not controversial to say, Brandon, go ahead, Brandon.

00:40:46
Speaker 15: Hey guys, I was actually gonna mention Phillip's call as well. I don't drive from three hours away, but I live in Somerset. It's about an hour and a half to come up there we have season tickets. We're not, you know, overly wealthy. It takes a bit of money to pay for those season tickets every year that we go. But I have a three month old son and I would like to create memories with him. It's part of the reason that we do it. Right, So, hearing that what you were saying about them doing that to the tailgate scene, that's that's a terrible idea. You talk a lot about the common fan, right, well, football epitomizes the common fare with the things that Philip mentioned, right, I mean like two and ten in the last twelve home games, and we've created a legitimate SEC atmosphere. Yeah, Kroger Field, Yes, I mean it. It is a legitimate SEC atmosphere. It's not a joke anymore. Like it's a legitimate atmosphere. And it's because of those fans like Philip that drive them three hours away and spend their Saturday and pay for season tickets when they don't actually have a ton of money to do so. But I didn't want to mention one more thing, just a question to you guys. I know Stoops has cultivated these relationships with donors, and he's bemoaned it several times right about having to do that, But he's cultivated these relationship with donors. So I worry if Stoops leaves right, especially if he leaves on a bad note.

00:42:03
Speaker 4: It's a completely I might have to cut you off because we have to go to the break. But it is a.

00:42:07
Speaker 2: Completely fair worry you're getting at, and it's something we will talk. I'll talk more about rather than a week. But that is a fair worry and something that I worry about a lot going forward. All Right, we're gonna switch gears and do basketball. So if you're on the phone for basketball, stay If not, we'll hit you tomorrow.
