00:00:00 Speaker 1: You are listening to the Dan Patrick Show on Fox Sports Radio. 00:00:04 Speaker 2: He's the new head coach at Michigan, Kyle Whittingham, former Utah head coach Tuton Pac twelve Coach of the Year and went ten and two at Utah this year, and then was going to go into an advisory role and be paid to stay. 00:00:21 Speaker 3: On at Utah. At least that was the report. 00:00:23 Speaker 2: And then all of a sudden Michigan, that job opened up and Kyle Whittingham was there to take the phone call. We spoke to him yesterday and I started off by asking him, is he having a midlife crisis? 00:00:37 Speaker 4: Yeah, well, good question. But you know, I had a really good run at Utah. It was a great experience thirty two years. In all twenty one years at the head coach. I figured I'd done pretty much all I could do there. And I'm still not that old sixty six. I guess that's, you know, not that old. But I thought when I stepped down, first of all, I didn't want to be that guy that over state is welcome, you know, I don't. I don't you know, I've seen that happen too many times, or guys stayed too long, get run out of town. So didn't want to be that guy, but just felt like, Okay, it's been a good run. Let's let's leave on a positive note. And when I did step down, I had an inclination in my mind that if there was about you know, you can count on one hand the amount of schools that if they would have called, I would have been receptive. And just so happens. About two or three days later, I had some contact with Michigan and they were on that list, and one thing led to another about a weaker ten days later it was a done deal. 00:01:41 Speaker 3: You contact them or they contact you. 00:01:43 Speaker 4: Well, it's my agent. And I'm not sure how the initial thing went. Of course, there's a search committee guy, the head of the search committee. I don't know who was contacted who first, but that's how that's how it went. 00:01:57 Speaker 2: What kind of questions do you have going into a situation. We all know how great the job is, but man feels like there's a little bit of a mess to clean up, you know, for the next year or so. 00:02:09 Speaker 4: Yeah, you know, it's the place doesn't need a rebuild, it needs a reboot of trust and get rid of the drama and and just get back to playing Michigan football without all the distractions. You know. The one thing is it didn't come from the players. You know, the players were not involved. It wasn't some player you know issue it was. It was, you know, just the peripheral. And so guys here have a great attitude. I met with every single one of them at the bull site last week. Just quality, young men, care about academics, excited to be at Michigan. But they've dealt with a lot over the last years, and so that's where they're at. 00:02:52 Speaker 3: What did you need to hear. 00:02:54 Speaker 4: I needed to hear that they were having a good experience here exclusive of the of the distractions. 00:02:59 Speaker 2: The athletic director and the you know, the the higher ups. 00:03:03 Speaker 3: What did you need to hear from them? 00:03:04 Speaker 4: Well, I need to hear that Michigan was what I thought it was, you know, a top five program, which I don't think there's any doubt about that. It's a special place. They're committed to winning here. You know, we do have some challenges with entrance requirements. There is there is a little bit of a hurdle there. But you know, you talk about athletes, resources, tradition, it's all. 00:03:27 Speaker 5: Here at Michigan. 00:03:28 Speaker 3: You haven't been out of Utah or Idaho. 00:03:30 Speaker 4: I don't think you're right, right, how does a coach you're right? 00:03:34 Speaker 2: Yeah, so what do you need to learn about, you know, being in Michigan and the Big Ten in hating Ohio State. Now you've got to deal with Indiana and yeah. 00:03:44 Speaker 4: Well we would transfer our moving leagues is no, no, nothing new to me or where I was at. And you went from the whac to the Mountain West, to the Pac twelve to the Big twelve and I was there through it all, and so I know exactly how to how to you know, navigate that. 00:04:01 Speaker 6: You know, we've had a. 00:04:01 Speaker 4: Pretty good track record against Big ten schools while I was at Utah. In fact, against Michigan we're three and oh. So that didn't hurt my cause during the during the uh the process, the hiring process. But but uh football is football then, and and it's ex's and o's. They don't change, certainly, the you know, the level of competition is increased, but it's relative. I mean, we're good players here, so so it's a I think it's a good situation. 00:04:28 Speaker 3: Do you hate Ohio State? 00:04:30 Speaker 4: Don't I have to? Yeah? 00:04:31 Speaker 5: I think I have to. 00:04:32 Speaker 2: But but uhr seminar that there, and I know Erban was helping you. 00:04:38 Speaker 3: UH wasn't. 00:04:39 Speaker 4: Absolutely, I've been close with Urban ever since. We worked together, uh back in uh O two and O three and I was as defensive coordinator. I was on the staff. Staff got let go, Urban got the job. I was the only holdover and uh Ridy developed a great relationship with him and have maintained it ever since. And yeah, he absolutely helped me. Uh alone the way here. 00:05:00 Speaker 2: Kyle Whittingham, Michigan head football coach joining us, I'm trying to figure out this transfer portal, so am I. But I'm also trying to figure out the collective and nil dollar. I mean, somebody just told me over the weekend that some of these programs are getting to forty million dollar budgets. 00:05:19 Speaker 4: Forty million plus. 00:05:20 Speaker 2: Absolutely, I mean it doesn't feel sustainable, Kyle. 00:05:25 Speaker 6: It's not. 00:05:25 Speaker 4: It is not sustainable. There's no question about that. Something has got to give, and I think it's you know, within a two to two to four five year window here, you're going to see a major overhaul Division one football. I think it's going to become more of a minor league NFL model. I think you're going to see a solar cap collective bargating players as employees. I think all that's coming because you're exactly right, we can't maintain this pace. It's impossible. 00:05:53 Speaker 3: Can we have a commissioner? 00:05:55 Speaker 4: Yes, I would love one. I think that's I think that's in the cards as well. 00:05:58 Speaker 2: But is everybody going to listen? Is the SEC gonna listen or the Big ten? 00:06:02 Speaker 4: I mean they have to, they have to. And I think if we get you know, ultimately aligned with the super conferences and you know, get things commission you know, have a commissioner that runs it all and put some teeth into it. I think that's the only way to survive. And so, and you're already seeing private equity starting to end. It's yeah, it's crazy. 00:06:21 Speaker 2: Where are we going with the playoffs? It's probably going to sixteen next year? But where are we going? 00:06:27 Speaker 4: Well to sixteen? First of all, and I kind of agree with coach Dan Landing at Oregon it would be nice to have the season wrapped up by January first, especially the way the portal window is right now. I mean it's chaos, and so I think there needs to be revamping, not only if of the system itself, but at least immediately the calendar. The calendar needs to be tweaked. 00:06:47 Speaker 2: What kind of money are we talking about? What's a top end quarterback costing now? 00:06:52 Speaker 3: In the portal? 00:06:52 Speaker 4: Well, I heard today that one university in the state of Texas is paying five million dollars for a starting quarterback for this year. And so I think that might be the the uh, the best and most I've heard of. And I you know, basketball players, some basketball players are making more than that from what you hear. But a starting quarterback now, apparently the price is five million dollars. 00:07:16 Speaker 3: Is Bryce Underwood staying? 00:07:18 Speaker 5: We hope? 00:07:18 Speaker 4: So I think he's had he's got a got a good vibe. Uh, well, you don't know anything yet. I mean, shoot, it's a it's the wild, wild West here, Dan. And so we think we think we're in a good place with Bryce. He's a terrific young man. I've sat down with him and and uh he is the really the heart and soul of this football team. And uh, I think we're making good progress towards that end. 00:07:42 Speaker 3: We are curious if we could have your old Utah gear. 00:07:46 Speaker 4: Yeah, I can have a shift out to you. It's all xcel. You got one size to choose from. 00:07:51 Speaker 3: But uh, boy, that's that's a big color change for you. 00:07:55 Speaker 4: Is it is? 00:07:55 Speaker 5: You're right? 00:07:56 Speaker 4: Yeah, red to blue and blue was our was our rival, you know, Ita for years and so now I got to get used to saying go blue. 00:08:03 Speaker 2: But I tell them, okay, but did you hate BYU as much as you're gonna hate? 00:08:11 Speaker 4: Okay, hate a strong word, But how about an intense, very intense rivalry? And uh, it was very uh in the state of Utah. I mean it's the biggest single sporting event. 00:08:22 Speaker 2: That was an unbelievable rivalry though very underrated. But you know, having two daughters who lived in Salt Lake and it's like you did. Yeah, no, they both they both left. They both came back home. Yeah, they loved it. They loved Salt Lake. But they said, uh, that that rivalry, you don't understand it until you go to it, exactly. 00:08:45 Speaker 3: You know. 00:08:45 Speaker 2: So because I grew up Ohio State Michigan, right, and I always think that there's no better rivalry, But there there are ones. When you go to them, you understand the importance. It's just not national magnitude like Ohio State and Michigan are. 00:08:58 Speaker 4: Doesn't have the national band with that we have in this rivalry, but it is every bit is intense and every bit as you know that the animosity in the in the state. You know, you're either red or blue in that state, and its pretty well split. I mean it's almost an even division there. 00:09:14 Speaker 2: Could you take Ryan Day when you were younger, when I was younger, or would you take him now? So he's forty six? 00:09:24 Speaker 4: Yeah? 00:09:25 Speaker 3: Could you take Ryan Day right now in the ocket gun. 00:09:28 Speaker 4: In the acting on. Well, there's one way to find out. 00:09:30 Speaker 3: I guess I don't know. 00:09:33 Speaker 4: I like Ryan I got a lot of respect for him. We played him in the in the Rose Bowl a couple of years back. Well, I guess it's been in three or four years now, so excellent football coach. 00:09:42 Speaker 7: Ye. 00:09:42 Speaker 2: I don't have to say nice things anymore, man, It's best that you don't, Okay. 00:09:46 Speaker 4: I know, I'll probably put my foot in my mouth right there. 00:09:49 Speaker 7: Uh. 00:09:49 Speaker 2: Congrats, good luck, appreciate you, thank us, Appreciate you, Dan, thank you. We tape that yesterday. Five hours later, Bryce Underwood tweeted that he was staying at Michigan, but you could hear in his voice when he said, is your quarterback going to be staying. He's like, uh, hope, so he didn't know. Yeah, do you think he didn't know? Well, if he knew, then why wouldn't you say. 00:10:13 Speaker 8: Well, I mean maybe he wanted the player to announce it. 00:10:17 Speaker 7: Uh. 00:10:17 Speaker 8: I mean that's kind of the way things work now. You know, the player announces they're leaving, the player announces they're staying. I wonder if he really had no idea. 00:10:27 Speaker 3: Yeah, Paulie, I would. 00:10:28 Speaker 9: Speculate that these days there was probably a renegotiation of his contract at Michigan and it was not signed yet, and that when we spoke to him it was there was not ink on the page yet. 00:10:37 Speaker 2: I believe that, Yeah, yeah, yeah, because it feels like everybody who's in the transfer portal, or the potential for every player to be in the transfer portal, because you know, you want to you want to at least find out what the market is for you or have somebody find that out for you. And you know, as Kyle was saying, Cincinnati's quarterback is getting five million dollars to go to Texas Tech. Now that's that's changed as far as the price, because as I told you, I think before the holiday break, I was told that the going rate for a quarterback transferring was three to four million dollars. And now all of a sudden, you get Cincinnati's quarterback. I don't know his name. Let me see, have you seen his name? I should have that, but I know that he was obviously a very good quarterback and he's going to Texas Tech and getting five million dollars. So yes, Marvin Brandon Soresby. Okay, all right, yeah, five million dollars. And you know, as I told you that source said there was a high school tight end and there were two major college programs that were paying him, and he was still in high school. But it's basically, hey, we're going to give you the money. We're giving you the money before you even you know, get to college. We're going to give you the money in high school. And he a decorated player and he was getting paid while I mean, that's where they're starting. 00:12:11 Speaker 3: I mean the same thing. 00:12:12 Speaker 2: Look at the shoe industry, it's we're not waiting for you to get to the NBA. We're not waiting for you to get to college. We're not waiting for you to get. 00:12:20 Speaker 3: To high school. 00:12:22 Speaker 2: We're going aau We're going as early as possible to get you in our shoes, to get you in the program, get your free gear. This is the same thing. It's like you're grooming to get them to go to your school. What's it going to take and when do you start? This is what's going on right now. They and even as coach said, this isn't sustainable that you have programs who are going to be spending forty to fifty million dollars a year. Now, some can, but you know you're and you can't say, well, Congress, you guys fix this because we can't. And really that's almost the mindset. It feels like, hey, nothing we could do. Maybe Congress can help us. I think Congress has other things they're probably working on, but you know, we can check the docket. 00:13:13 Speaker 10: Yes, Morvin, you're going to see a lot more mid season changes like you did this season because they're paying all this money. They're like, we're not seeing results, so you gotta go. 00:13:23 Speaker 3: Yeah. 00:13:23 Speaker 2: I mean we see this in the NFL, where you get you get two years. It feels like two years is a coach two years as a quarterback before we you know, rubber stamp you as your franchise quarterback or you're our coach, or you're a bust or you should be just a coordinator not a head coach. I mean, that's it's getting quicker and quicker because the money is getting bigger and bigger. 00:13:46 Speaker 3: And you want to know right away, is that is that our guy? If not, we got to move on. 00:13:51 Speaker 4: Yees. 00:13:52 Speaker 8: So I I know that the money in college football and how much players are being paid as a controversial issue, but like, take someone like Brandon Swordsby you're just talking about he is going to make more money than shirdor Sanders is going to make. I kind of like the idea that the money that these kids are gonna make keeps them in college football longer so they actually develop more, and that then maybe the players that are supposed to make it to the NFL do go to the NFL, and the ones that aren't still have a good chunk of change, but they probably aren't gonna eventually get there. The developed ones will be more apparent. 00:14:33 Speaker 2: Well, but you have to stay three years in college football, so you have a built in system that protects college football from the standpoint of these names may bounce around, but they stay. College basketball doesn't have that, so you don't have any familiarity with college basketball, at. 00:14:49 Speaker 3: Least with football. 00:14:50 Speaker 2: You go, oh, that guy used to be And you're right, you might stay for your senior year is instead of coming out after your junior year in college football, but you're already locked in for three years. Where college basketball, I'm one and done. I mean, all of these guys we looked at and we go, that guy's won and done. All the marquee players won and done. Even the money that you could make, and Cooper Flagg reportedly was making around two point six million dollars at Duke. He was the highest paid player two point six Now what would he be worth if he came back? What five million dollars? Maybe more than that. He wants to get into that second contract in the NBA when he's gonna get sixty or seventy million dollars a year, Yes, but. 00:15:33 Speaker 8: Maybe even still just staying for that extra year of development. There's not the I get the rush to the second contract. I definitely get that. However, there is something I think there's something to be said about another year of development rather than being pushed too early. You know, I know, if you're leaving college football with a couple million dollars in your pocket. There really isn't that same rush to get there. It's like Ty Simpson and Alabama. You know, greg Or was some of the who was it. 00:16:01 Speaker 2: McCarran said, Hey, I would tell him to stay, and you know, you need another year. He might be in the transfer portal. He got hurt in that game against Indiana, maybe a cracked rib, but it looked like he might have been getting benched as well. And is he going to transfer? Does he does he want to go into the NFL? And I think McCarran said he would probably be a fifth or sixth round quarterback, but that he shouldn't stay. And not everybody has guidance though now we think that, oh man, you know somebody, there's a lot of people with a lot of agendas, who, hey, I'd go pro because people helping you with that decision might be getting money from you with that decision. 00:16:44 Speaker 3: Yeah, palling. 00:16:45 Speaker 9: Another great example is Carson Beck, who was a hot property a year and a half ago. Then he really cooled off as a draft prospect, you know, and parlayed a big payday from Miami. 00:16:54 Speaker 2: Well quinn Ewers as well. I mean, it's it's working out for Quinn but didn't want him to stay another year. I think he wanted to stay another year. Like No, I think we're good. Uh Arch, it's Arch's term. 00:17:09 Speaker 1: Be sure to catch the live edition of The Dan Patrick Show weekdays at nine am Eastern six am Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app. 00:17:19 Speaker 2: Hey, it's Rob Parker and Calvin Washington from The Odd Couple on Fox Sports Radio. 00:17:24 Speaker 7: And in addition to hearing us live weeknights from seven to ten pm Eastern on Fox Sports Radio, we are excited to announce brand new YouTube channel for the show. 00:17:33 Speaker 2: That's right, You can now watch The Odd Couple live on YouTube every day. 00:17:39 Speaker 7: All you gotta do search Odd Couple FSR on YouTube. Again YouTube, Just search Odd Couple FSR. Check us out on YouTube and subscribe. 00:17:49 Speaker 2: Twenty five percent of the NFL needs a new head coach. I thought we were gonna have five or six openings. Now here we are with eight. That doesn't mean that we won't get to nine. I don't know if we get to ten. I wouldn't rule out nine though, because somebody, whether they're in the playoffs or like, if your Tampa Bay, would you make a change with John Harball. I mean it's it is an upgrade. Kevin Stefanski, highly thought of. And this is where I'm guessing in Miami, Steven Ross probably went, wait a minute, we can get John Harball, or we have the opportunity. Troy Aikman is a consultant for us. Maybe we could get John Harball. That's an upgrade Kevin Stefanski, that would be an upgrade. But if your Tampa Bay, I'm gonna throw in Buffalo because it just feels like something could happen there. I don't know if there's another scenario. You know, Green Bay doesn't make these kind of rash decisions. Yeah, granted they lost what four in a row leading into this game, and you know the who's favored in that game with the Bears. It's gone back and forth, so it's it's a toss up. It's a pick him game, and you got love who was out. Micah Parson's done for the year. Doesn't feel like Matt Lafleur is coaching for his job. But you look at these other scenarios here where now all of a sudden, you know the stakes. This is high stakes poker, this is Texas Hold him or fold them? With some of these owners and what do you do? Yes, Marvin, and. 00:19:37 Speaker 10: I think the Micah Parson's injury helps Matt Lafleur because wait, wait, I didn't have my best defensive player, so if they lose, he's kind of got an excuse. 00:19:46 Speaker 2: Well, Mike mc daniel, we thought had an excuse too. Tyrek Hill goes down, but I think they were trading Tyreek Hill before he got injured. Then all of a sudden, you lose your best defensive lineman and one of your or maybe best defensive back. You don't go all in and trade. You know your running back and your other wide receiver in Miami, and you stay there with Tua. Then all of a sudden, you quinn Ewers gives you a better chance of winning. It felt like Tua and Mike McDaniel were attached. Therefore, when Mike was keeping his job, I thought, well, maybe Tua is going to be able to come back. But I'm wondering, can you ship him off or is that one of those Russell Wilson man. This is going to hurt the salary cap, but we got to do this for the betterment of this team. And is that a good job going into you want a head coaching job if you haven't had the opportunity. But if you're John Harbaugh, that's eighteen years. You pick where you want to go. You don't have to take a job, but you need to win. 00:20:49 Speaker 3: Now. 00:20:50 Speaker 2: He's not in for a rebuild. I don't think the Giants are a rebuild. Obviously, the Raiders are a rebuild. Tennessee is rebuilding. Miami is sort of in that no man's land. They're not good, but they're not bad. They're just eh, yeah, Pullie. 00:21:14 Speaker 9: I went back and looked at the Dolphins after Week seven. They just lost six of their first seven. They just lost thirty one to six to the Browns, and our poll question the next day was does Mike McDaniel make it to dinner? And then he won five of his next six and staved it off for a while. 00:21:32 Speaker 2: And that's where I said at the time, if you're going to fire him, then fire him, because there's a chance they're going to win some games. 00:21:40 Speaker 3: And then you win games. They won five of six. 00:21:43 Speaker 2: Now all of a sudden, you have that conundrum of, well, wait a minute, what team and what coach do I have the first half of the season, or what they're showing me in the second half of the season, and owners have admitted to this that you'll see teams that are better the following year by the way they finish the regular season. You might not be good as far as qualifying for the playoffs. But it's like the Lions. When the Lions closed fast a couple of years ago, I said, and I thought they were going to make the playoffs that year. I said, look out for the Lions the next year, and they went to the NFC title gain, I believe. How do you close? It's like Atlanta played well at the end of the year. History has shown if you play well at the end of the year and you're not a playoff team, chances are it'll carry over. 00:22:35 Speaker 3: You found something. 00:22:37 Speaker 2: Maybe it took longer than it should have, but maybe you have something in some of these places that you closed out and you played hard, you played well. 00:22:45 Speaker 11: Yes, Ton, at the risk of signing insensitive, hasn't Black Monday lost some of its luster? If several days later you can get fired, possibly even have to lise a playoff. 00:22:53 Speaker 5: Game, which we're going to find out in the week or two ahead. What is Black Monday at this point? 00:22:58 Speaker 3: How about black Week, just that the entire week or. 00:23:01 Speaker 5: Is it gray Monday? 00:23:02 Speaker 11: Is it a lighter shade because it's like not as scary as it's not really Black Monday anymore. 00:23:06 Speaker 5: If you're gonna get fired on. 00:23:07 Speaker 2: Thursday, yeah, how about you might get fired this week like that? 00:23:12 Speaker 3: That's a yeah. See, it is kind of. 00:23:15 Speaker 8: Crazy that we've all bought in on the concept of black Monday as a thing. Yeah, that we all know, and that so much so that Tud's disappointed that it's lost his luster. 00:23:23 Speaker 3: It's not the Black Monday we used to know. 00:23:26 Speaker 5: Within twenty four hours of the last game of the regular. 00:23:28 Speaker 8: Stations, don't wait to see all these guys get fired. 00:23:30 Speaker 9: When people lose their livelihood and their dreams, we should do it in a format that's. 00:23:33 Speaker 3: Come on, good for us. It's not fair. 00:23:35 Speaker 5: Make a decision. 00:23:36 Speaker 8: Let's sponsor it next year by like an employment agency or something. Let's get indeed on there, coach. 00:23:44 Speaker 2: You need indeed minimum kindness, uh, the sensitivity level of you that never sees. 00:23:56 Speaker 8: We can't celebrate Black Monday the most sensitive slash insensitive person. 00:24:00 Speaker 2: That's true. Nobody fakes sincerity quite like you do. Nobody, by the way, random random thing, random topic. Tomorrow night, I have a zoom call at six o'clock for a half hour with a psychic and she I got this Christmas gift. She is going to tell me about my dog winning and I had to send her pictures and I get to I get to wait and hear about my dog. 00:24:36 Speaker 8: I smill smoke. 00:24:39 Speaker 3: Okay, so it's telling me that you don't smoke. That's why I smell the smoke. It's a clue that you don't smoke. Yeah. 00:24:44 Speaker 2: Oh so I and then my daughter has a cat, a Maine coon cat. And then she gets the other half hour. So I get a zoom call with a psychic about your dog, about my dog and my cat. Yeah, and we're on a zoom call with the psychic with our past when he. 00:25:01 Speaker 8: Is upset about the treats. Situation feels it's a little lacking. 00:25:04 Speaker 3: Yes, Paul, I. 00:25:06 Speaker 9: Don't want to pu poo this, but I would see those psychic offices and I want to walk in and say, tell me my middle name. 00:25:11 Speaker 6: If you tell me my middle name, I'll sit down and pay the fee. 00:25:14 Speaker 2: How much I don't know that guy Oh's doctor os, Yeah, Oh's pearlman. He might be able to tell your middle name. That guy does some crazy, crazy stuff. I don't know how he's doing it, but you'll see him with NFL teams, saw him with the rams and the bills. 00:25:32 Speaker 3: I'm like, damn, something's going on there. Yeah, Paul, what. 00:25:35 Speaker 6: Are you going to ask your psychic tomorrow? 00:25:37 Speaker 3: I'm not asking. Oh, I'm listening. 00:25:39 Speaker 6: They're presenting. 00:25:40 Speaker 2: Yeah, you got to tell me about my pet. I'm not gonna give you any hints about Winnie. No, and the main coon his name is Kevin. So we're gonna be sitting there with the psych on a zoom call. Man, do I live the life? Yes, DoD did you reach. 00:25:55 Speaker 6: Out to the psychic for an appointment? 00:25:57 Speaker 11: And if so, it doesn't make sense because the psychic should have known it advance that you needed this help and they would have reached out to you. 00:26:02 Speaker 3: Well, one of my children gave me. This is a Christmas gift. Yeah, okay, see the smoke. That must be your grandfather. That's your grandfather. 00:26:12 Speaker 8: Okay, he smoked right, Like who didn't have a grandfather that smoked? 00:26:15 Speaker 2: And if you're watching on Peacock, there's Tyler with Winnie and that's not a great angle for Winnie. 00:26:20 Speaker 3: But there she is. 00:26:22 Speaker 8: She's excited. 00:26:23 Speaker 2: Now she's going to see herself on TV and go crazy crazy. You can hear her barking in the bag. 00:26:31 Speaker 11: Yes, are you going into this with a questionable no hour, You're all in on, like, I'm gonna take what this person says for real. 00:26:37 Speaker 2: I promise that I'm going in with an open mind. I promise. 00:26:42 Speaker 8: I sense tension here with is it maybe with the dog? 00:26:45 Speaker 5: Is it with a family members? 00:26:46 Speaker 6: Is your dog bark? 00:26:47 Speaker 11: Sometimes? I'm getting this feeling that like there's a dog a wag her tail, getting this feeling. 00:26:52 Speaker 2: I still love the pink panther that scene. Does your dog bite? And then all of a sudden, you know, Peter's catch the dog and the dog bites him and he goes, I thought you said your dog does not bite. And the guy behind the counter goes, that is not my dog. AnyWho? 00:27:12 Speaker 6: Any who worried about tomorrow night? 00:27:14 Speaker 3: Are you? 00:27:15 Speaker 6: Yeah? Because I think you believe a little too much. 00:27:19 Speaker 3: You think I'm gullible. 00:27:21 Speaker 6: No, not gullible. That's different. 00:27:23 Speaker 9: I think you if you said do you believe or not believe in psychics? I think you lean towards that. You would believe in them occasionally. 00:27:31 Speaker 3: No, I wouldn't. 00:27:33 Speaker 9: And I'm talking about not that random dude on the street, just like I think you would lean towards it. 00:27:37 Speaker 2: I did sit down for a tarot card reading and I didn't. It didn't last because she said to me, I see Evil. 00:27:51 Speaker 3: And I was like, I don't. 00:27:52 Speaker 6: Want to hear it. 00:27:52 Speaker 3: No, I'm like I don't know what when? What's going on? 00:27:55 Speaker 2: You know? And and there were a group of people, there was people, everybody's getting there reading done, and I didn't want to do it. And then all of a sudden I sat down and it was like, any what's going on here? So I cut short that tarot card reading? 00:28:11 Speaker 3: Yes, Tony, what are you supposed to do with the that? 00:28:12 Speaker 5: You're not going to make it home alive just forever. You're gonna stay in the office there with this. 00:28:17 Speaker 3: Yeah. 00:28:17 Speaker 2: I don't know how deep she's gonna get, but we had to send pictures of the dog and the cat and then she's gonna do a reading since Evil. 00:28:23 Speaker 8: I'm getting the Yeah, does. 00:28:25 Speaker 5: Warby mean anything to you? 00:28:27 Speaker 2: Evil? 00:28:27 Speaker 3: Canievil? 00:28:28 Speaker 8: I'm getting the name Warby, war Morby, Norby, Dorbi Norby. 00:28:32 Speaker 5: Does that mean anything? 00:28:35 Speaker 6: When you're in there tomorrow night, you got thirty minutes. 00:28:37 Speaker 9: If you got a couple of minutes at the end, ask her if she likes the Panthers of the Rams, get that would help? 00:28:44 Speaker 3: Yeah, I don't. 00:28:45 Speaker 2: I don't know if anybody's gone through this, but yeah, I got. It's an hour long. And I said to my daughter, I said, ah, I'm not sitting there for an hour. I'm gonna give you. I'm gonna take thirty and then you take thirty and that's it. 00:28:58 Speaker 3: Yes, So it's a Paulie point. 00:29:00 Speaker 11: Does a psychokeept selective abilities? Why can't like they tell you, how do they not play the roulette wheel? And I know, I don't know. They know the cards, they know what's coming. 00:29:07 Speaker 2: Okay, why doesn't this O's pearlman play the stock market and become a billionaire and then he doesn't have to go into a football practice and read. 00:29:15 Speaker 3: People's minds because it's fraudulent. 00:29:18 Speaker 2: I don't know there's something going on with him, like I watched they. Anytime I go on Facebook and I see one of those clips, I click on, Oh's Pearlman Peter. 00:29:29 Speaker 5: Pick the powerball numbers? 00:29:30 Speaker 11: Then why don't they do every time you can win power Ball, you see the future, you know things you know, select things you know, like the name of someone's grandmother that die that's talking to them from the dead. 00:29:39 Speaker 5: Rumhn. 00:29:41 Speaker 9: Yes, I'm reading a couple of articles where they discuss in seriousness, like popular science about psychics, and they say most psychics who are somewhat reputable air quotes, they say they can't predict like the weather and the future and sporting events, but more so, they connect with the person they're talking to and can read into them. 00:29:58 Speaker 6: And it's not like I I tell you what the stock market is going to do next week. 00:30:01 Speaker 2: Yeah, okay, I mean once again, it was a Christmas gift, and I don't know if I reacted in the way I should have because I was like, I saw this, it was like a card and I went, huh. 00:30:14 Speaker 5: That's not a good stab to make for gift. 00:30:16 Speaker 12: Huh huh. 00:30:21 Speaker 3: Yeah, okay, yeah, yeah, okay. 00:30:24 Speaker 2: And then I could bond with my daughter and then her cat and the cat and the dog get along with each other, and yeah, yeah, it'd be like who is oh Wilson. 00:30:35 Speaker 6: Yeah yeah, a great idea. 00:30:38 Speaker 10: Yes, Martmon, Yeah, the person one of your kids. They gave it to you. Oh Dad's gonna love this, and you just didn't have that reaction that they I know. 00:30:45 Speaker 2: I should have. I should have. They should have known to not give me. I'm psychotic. Fox Sports Radio has the best sports talk lineup in the nation. Catch all of our at foxsports Radio dot com and within the iHeartRadio app. Search FSR to listen live. Let's start at the end of the game. Would you have called pass interference in that situation? Was it pass interference? 00:31:29 Speaker 5: I personally would not call it. 00:31:30 Speaker 12: Could you make a case on pretty much any other play throughout the course of the game, would that be deemed pass interference? Yes, probably more likely than not. There was some pushing going both ways, and in that final play. I think we all know when those plays looked at kind of as a hail Mary situation, even though it was your traditional hill Mary. 00:31:51 Speaker 5: You're just you're not going to get that call. I mean, I think I'm the only. 00:31:54 Speaker 12: Player who was a part of a Browns team in two thousand and nine when we lost in the Detroit Lyons to ever basely have a pass interference, a defensive pass interference called, which was called on Calvin Johnson in that game, and we obviously ended up losing that game. But I can't think of another example of it in pro football or even college football. 00:32:13 Speaker 5: For that matter. 00:32:14 Speaker 3: How did Miami win at the line of scrimmage? 00:32:18 Speaker 5: That's really what they've done. 00:32:20 Speaker 12: And I think last night's game was highlighted by the offensive line. I mean, that's just a massive group and it's hard to like really understand dan like how big they are. 00:32:30 Speaker 5: Until you at the field level, because the camera doesn't do it justice. It really doesn't. 00:32:34 Speaker 12: It's my like if it's and I've said this and we'll get into the semi final game tonight hopefully, but every time I see Indiana's offensive line and defensive line, and then you look across when it was the Big Ten championship for Ohio State or even Alabama most recently, you just go, there's a tremendous size advantage. Well, that's definitely gonna be the case if if you makes it and wins tonight. 00:32:57 Speaker 5: They're just a massive group. They're physical. 00:32:59 Speaker 12: I mean, you know, Mary chris Ball really it kind of made you know, State disclaims as a coach in college football on the offensive line and that group. I thought one last night in prior games it felt like it was Ruby Bay a key messador on the edges for their defense. 00:33:14 Speaker 5: But that's what they've won with. 00:33:15 Speaker 12: I mean, I don't get me wrong, they're extremely talented too in other spots, but that team has led in the trenches and that's a reflection. 00:33:21 Speaker 5: Of who their head coaches. 00:33:22 Speaker 12: And then credit to Mario Crystobaal forgetting that team to play that sort of physical style of football throughout the playoffs and for the most part throughout the year. 00:33:30 Speaker 2: I know, we spent a lot of time talking about quarterbacks in the portal, and I keep reminding people, give me offensive and defensive linemen. 00:33:38 Speaker 3: I mean, I'll take it. 00:33:40 Speaker 2: I mean, Georgia won national titles because they basically said, it doesn't matter who we have at quarterback, but it matters who we have offensive defensive linemen. 00:33:51 Speaker 12: Yeah, look at what Philly did after they won those national titles. Howie Roseman said, I'm gonna draft those. 00:33:56 Speaker 13: Guys and a super Bowl with those guys, So the national checks if they wont Super Bowls with that strategy. So that to me, I think is like that that's what's not talked about enough for if you really dive into what's happening in the transfer portal. 00:34:12 Speaker 5: Now everyone's talking about the quarterbacks, and they're obviously going to fetch the highest price. 00:34:16 Speaker 12: If you don't have one, but it's still offensive lineman, it's defensive linemen. We can go on for days talking about how the style of football that's taught at younger levels and how that translates up and how it impacts offensive line play, and how hard it is to find guys who are ready coming out of high school who either don't need to put on a bunch of a weight and put on a bunch of muscle and develop that sort of strength and physicality. That's one part of it, but also just the way they're taught, the technique and everything else that goes along with that. It's very different, you know, It's just a lot of that's changed over time. So they're a price commodity. You don't have to look any further than Texas Tech who won the Big Twelve, and look at that defensive front, and that it made on their chances of getting to the playoff and then ultimately winning in the playoff. But at the end of the day, like that's what this game is gonna come down to, who's best in the trenches and today's semi final announs in the National Championship. 00:35:11 Speaker 2: If I had Lane Kiffen hooked up to a lie detector test, who. 00:35:19 Speaker 3: Do you think he was rooting for last night? 00:35:23 Speaker 5: I'd like to think from knowing. 00:35:26 Speaker 3: We keep saying, we'd like to think that what do you actually think. 00:35:30 Speaker 12: Well, he's incentivized to root for old Miss, right, like he's still getting paid off these wins. 00:35:35 Speaker 5: So I think he was rooty. 00:35:36 Speaker 3: He's rich already. 00:35:38 Speaker 5: This is get that hold on, hold on anyone who has money. 00:35:42 Speaker 12: You can't tell me they don't want more money. 00:35:45 Speaker 5: That excuse I hate when people bring that up, like, oh, they've got money. 00:35:49 Speaker 12: Oh, I guess they just don't care that they're gonna light it on fire and they're just they don't care what happens to it. I think he was rooting for Ole Miss and in part because I mean, like it's gonna look bad if obviously they would winning a national championship, and that's maybe part of the reason why he left Ole Miss in the first place. But he is incentivized. I think the dude's got a good heart despite some of the other things that maybe go on. So I'd like to think that he's rooty for guys too, who who are gonna be coaching on staff, Charlie West. 00:36:20 Speaker 3: Junior, who agree with that? Yeah, I agree with that. 00:36:23 Speaker 12: And even so the players who may be joining him at so much so I'm sure there's some elements he would. 00:36:29 Speaker 2: Be rooting against his players if they're going to join him because now they can join him a week earlier. 00:36:35 Speaker 12: True, true, but I think they'll they'll they would still have that chance after this game to figure that out. 00:36:41 Speaker 5: I'd like to think he was ready for All Miss. I believe he was. 00:36:45 Speaker 3: How do you evaluate Carson. 00:36:46 Speaker 5: Beck, who. 00:36:51 Speaker 12: I think you obviously saw in the Final Drive what he's capable of. I think we've seen throughout portions of his career what he's capable of. The tough thing is is you didn't really have to do a deep dive into you know who he is as a person. You know what maybe hazard hasn't been there for him, so you can display that consistency like we saw maybe you'd say a couple of years ago at Georgia or even at points in time this season, when he has those good games, he's not able to follow it up and consistently play that way. You know, it felt like he was managing the game in the quarterfinal round and then last night, like when they really needed him, so he stepped up, made big time throws, obviously the scramble for the touchdown to win. But I think you see the high end, like he can be a guy that's talked about going in the first round because because of that arm talent and the ability to layer throws and anticipate and see windows. But there's other times too, when when you see some of those poor decisions, or you know, him not playing as well versus pressure, or some of those blitz looks, you go, well, he's gonna be asked to do at the next level. 00:37:51 Speaker 5: So it's it's. 00:37:52 Speaker 12: Hard because you could see the upside there, but there's still a level of consistency that's just not it's never really come together, And I don't know how to put that, you know, how to summarize that at this time because I still think He's got a big game ahead of him if he plays well in the National Championship, based on what he did in last night's game, based on what he did in the National Championship, That's probably all people really want to talk about when they were coming to a draft evaluation of him. 00:38:16 Speaker 2: I'm talking to Brady Quinn, Fox College football analyst. What did Oregon I guess, gain or learn from the first matchup with Indiana that helps them tonight? 00:38:28 Speaker 12: They got to be better and stopping the run. I thought that was what ultimately lost them. The game was in their house, and this is a group that obviously is highly motivated. You know, you see Dan Lennings pre game speeches. But they weren't the more physical team. And I think they know they have to be the more physical team because Indiana has proven that every single game. We can talk about for Nanda Mendoza, we can talk about the defense, Cooper Sarat, some of their playmakers. 00:38:52 Speaker 5: It starts in the trenches, like they have. 00:38:55 Speaker 12: Dictated to others how that game is going to go, and everything to me is based off how they run the football and the RPOs and everything else off of that. 00:39:02 Speaker 5: So they've got to find a way of stopping the run. 00:39:05 Speaker 12: That's been a little bit of an achilles heel for Oregon's defense this year, if we're want to break it down. But but I tend to believe that, you know, when you have rematches and it's it's seldom you have it in college football, at least not until we had to expanded playoff, that you know, the team to lose is going to learn more from that. 00:39:20 Speaker 5: And I think you have evidence of that. Look at the playoff. 00:39:22 Speaker 12: If you look at every single power for a team that played a rematch, the team that lost the initial matchup one you know, you don't have to look any further than it was Old Miss obviously lost to Georgia. 00:39:32 Speaker 5: They just they beat Georgia. 00:39:33 Speaker 12: In the subsequent round, you had Bamba who lost to Oklahoma, who beat Oklahoma, and even in the SEC championship game, you know Georgia lost to Bamba. They you know, they win the SEC Championship. So there's examples I think of that. I think the only one you could point to is or Old Miss, who beat Tulaan and obviously a rematch which didn't change anything, but again not really in. 00:39:53 Speaker 5: The same you know, level playing field. I think That's what the stake for Oregon is. Is this team. 00:39:57 Speaker 12: To me, Dan feels like Ohhi State last year, where you know, Ohio State, U had kind of you know, lost the Michigan game, stumbled versus Oregon as well, but they kind of built that momentum. 00:40:09 Speaker 5: As they went on to win a national championship. 00:40:11 Speaker 12: Oregon, you know, lost that Indiana game, didn't play in the conference championship, but I feel like they've kind of learned from that and they've built up from that and now they've got a lot of momentum as they head into it. So I would not be surprised at all if you see a very more you know, physical, different style Oregon team and as far as how aggressive they are stopping Indiana's rushing attack. 00:40:31 Speaker 2: The SEC finishes this postseason with a one in eight record against non conference power for teams. Is this the future or is this an aberration? 00:40:42 Speaker 5: No, this is what college football has been. 00:40:46 Speaker 12: We we for the third straight year, don't have an SEC team playing for a national championship. For the third straight year. You know, you didn't have the the bulk share of representation in the playoff, at least in the SEMIS. They're not represented by SEC teams. So I think when you really take a good hard look at what's happened in college football is there's been a shift and and look, you can draw your own conclusion about how NIL and the transfer portal has impacted that where now you can pay players that it's above board. I'll let someone else, you know, uh, tick off the SEC fan base about it. And I'm also not naive enough to think that other schools and other conferences weren't doing it, but it just kind of see, it feels like an odd cause and effect that NIL transfer portal, that you know, combination now becomes possible, and all of a sudden, the teams in the Big Ten, uh and other teams start kind of really capitalizing off of that. 00:41:39 Speaker 5: So I think this is going to be more of the norm. 00:41:41 Speaker 12: And I think moving forward, uh, you know, you're you're only going to see you know, teams within the Big Ten continuity as stronger. I mean, if I you does it, that's no saying like who else could potentially do it too in the Big Ten that we really didn't think about. 00:41:54 Speaker 5: Uh, you know, three years ago. 00:41:56 Speaker 2: No matter who wins the national title, do you feel notre Dame is still better than them. 00:42:04 Speaker 5: Hey, I don't like living in a world of hypotheticals, so. 00:42:08 Speaker 12: I'm not I'm not one of those Notre Dame fans who's gonna sit there and say that I wish there was a scenario where Notre Dame could have been in so he could have seen what it would look like, but that wasn't the case. 00:42:19 Speaker 5: I don't. 00:42:20 Speaker 12: I even hate the fact that we have to talk about it, because you know, it takes away from all the other schools and what they've accomplished, all the players, what they've accomplished, but in. 00:42:33 Speaker 2: You. 00:42:34 Speaker 12: But here's what I'll say, Here's what I'll say with you even asking it, it goes. 00:42:38 Speaker 5: To show you the brand power of Notre Dame. 00:42:40 Speaker 12: Like ESPN can't help themselves and they have to make a snarky comment as they do the postgame highlights on Sports Center afterwards about Notre Dame, who hasn't been involved for a month, but like everyone still wants to talk about them. Okay, Like, go ahead, keep on talking about the brand that everyone hates to admit is the top college football even though they're not. 00:43:01 Speaker 5: A part of that. 00:43:02 Speaker 2: Well, same thing with the Cowboys. Everybody goes out of their way to somehow incorporate the Cowboys, and even now, you know, like you know, we're gonna look ahead, you know, next year with the Cowboys. Wait a minute, there's games coming up this weekend. Let me, can you give me a comp for Fernando Mendoza. 00:43:22 Speaker 12: Kirk Cousins is kind of who I when I'm watching his tape and. 00:43:26 Speaker 3: See h a higher end. 00:43:33 Speaker 5: That's a tough question to answer because I also was a. 00:43:36 Speaker 2: Fourth round draft pick. That's why I was saying that this is gonna be the number one. Now, granted there's not a lot of quarterbacks in this draft. 00:43:44 Speaker 12: Well, hold on, I mean, if Dante Moore comes out, I'm not I'm not so sure he's not gonna be the number one overall pick. Like, I think there's a real argument to be made in his upside, his skill set. He to me, if he came out, would be the purest passer, meaning when you watch, I think he's got a stronger arm. I think he layers throws better. I know he's not his experience and obviously you know he's not the Heisman Trophy winner. And Fernando's had a tremendous year I'm not taking anything away. 00:44:09 Speaker 2: From yeah, but let's take no take away the college stuff. Let's look at pro potential. 00:44:14 Speaker 12: So so when I watched the tape of these guys and you're watching the different throws that they're making, I sit there and look at Dante Morr and I said, Yeah, that's the guy I probably feel like has the higher upside and and even some of the stuff he does off schedule. 00:44:28 Speaker 2: Okay, let me make you Tom Brady. You're you're the GM of the Raiders. You're on the clock, and the pick at it is in the Raiders select. 00:44:38 Speaker 12: I would well, again, Dante Moores hasn't declared so and so he does, it would be Fernando Mendoza. Once he does, I would lean right now based on my film studying on both probably on Dante Moore. I like that, And I know that's that's gonna be controversial on people, but it's just what I've seen from him. I've sat down and talked to them, and they're both tremendous guys. 00:44:56 Speaker 5: Like I think they both be franchise quarterbacks. 00:44:58 Speaker 12: Like this, Like we've got in trouble before because we had a debate over like Bryce Young, CJ. 00:45:04 Speaker 5: Stroud, and it's like both these guys. 00:45:06 Speaker 12: Be franchise quarterbacks, Like they each have a skill set that I think translates to me. 00:45:10 Speaker 5: It's more about, Okay, if Fernando goes to. 00:45:13 Speaker 12: Las Vegas, or if Dante goes to Las Vegas, what are they going to do to help him out? Because that is a team that's devoid of protection and devoid of any playmakers helping him out. I mean, look at Ashton Genty. I think he rushed for what is it, twelve hundred yards, thirteen hundred yards, like a thousand of them were after contact. I mean, it's it's ridiculous what he had to endure as a running back. So both those guys I think will probably go one and two and whatever order the team see that. But I think the difference for me again is just I think Dante's got a little bigger arm. 00:45:44 Speaker 5: I think he can create a little bit more. 00:45:46 Speaker 12: He's less experienced and obviously doesn't have the same type of tape, but it's just effortless man when you watch him, the way he throws the football, and the one concern I have a little bit for Fernando is they run a bit more of a heavier, heavier, RPO offense, and so that doesn't translate quite as well to the next level. You know, we always talk about the progressive quarterbacks reading defenses and understanding what they're trying to take away. I think you see a little more NFL throws, more of an NFL style offense from what Dante is as to do with organ as opposed to maybe what you're saying from uh Fernando and Ayu. 00:46:20 Speaker 3: Jets Raiders. 00:46:22 Speaker 2: If you had your choice and you're going to play quarterback next year, where are you going. 00:46:28 Speaker 12: I think the Jets are better positioned because of their personnel to allow you to have success. I was a part of the Jets organization for half a year, so a cup of coffee or whatever, and I would say, they've got things set up, but you know, you just got to hope that it all comes together. 00:46:46 Speaker 2: Would you go back to college if that was the option, you could go Raiders, Jets or back to Oregon. 00:46:52 Speaker 12: If you're talking about being the I mean, if you're talking about the business decision and you're the number one overall pick, I mean, you're making a lot of money on that first contract that's fully guaranteed, really right, for the first four years with a fifth year option. No one's gonna be able to compete with that at the college level. And so you might say, like, are you willing to take on that risk where, yeah, you could get paid. I don't know, Brendan Soresby got paid what five million reportedly to go to Texas Tech. You know you're gonna get paid good money and you delay it for another year. But I'll ask you this, Dan Jets raiders the Browns tights like they've been drafting it somewhere in that spot for a long time. Like it seems like it's pretty cyclical. It happens like every other year. So there's no guarantee if you go back to school, you're not going to have that same team in the same situation play itself out. 00:47:37 Speaker 2: Yeah, I'll leave you with this. Does Miami fire their head coach if they don't know who is going to be their next head coach? 00:47:48 Speaker 12: I it just doesn't line up to think that they didn't react to the John Horbaugh now being out there for them. 00:47:56 Speaker 3: Yeah. 00:47:56 Speaker 5: I mean none of it lines up, not with who the general manage your interview candidates have been, and especially if they end up hiring their general manager. First. 00:48:04 Speaker 12: I think the thing that bothers me the most about it is, you know, what would of Mike McDaniel bench to a if he knew that he was gonna get fired at some point, and whether it's after the season or like, if he felt like he needed to put the best guy out there to win and has no disrespect to quin yours. 00:48:21 Speaker 5: But he's a rookie. Maybe they want to see what they have in him. 00:48:23 Speaker 12: But I think as a coach you also do that if you feel like you're comfortable, like, hey, I'm gonna be. 00:48:26 Speaker 5: Here in twenty twenty six. Yeah, so let's see what we have in this young guy. 00:48:29 Speaker 12: That's what That's what strikes me as a bit odd too, is just the way it all went about. It feels like, again they're reactive to who else is out there, maybe even with Stefanski, but it seems like all the all the dots are connected and it's gonna end up being horrible when it's all said. 00:48:43 Speaker 5: It done. 00:48:43 Speaker 3: Good to chat with you as always, have a great weekend. 00:48:47 Speaker 5: Happy New Year, by the way, or there was it too late, it's too any one of those like yeah you're okay, you're a Seinfeld. 00:48:52 Speaker 2: Guy, Okay, yeah, to like, Okay, do I wait until the end of January. 00:48:57 Speaker 12: If I hadn't seen you, I might, I might open up with that. I think that's a that's a that's a fair way of handling it. 00:49:02 Speaker 3: And you could have texted me. 00:49:04 Speaker 5: That's a good point. You gotta text me. 00:49:06 Speaker 3: Yeah, but I wouldn't say Happy New Year. 00:49:09 Speaker 5: I was saying, you could have on New Year's Day said I would. 00:49:13 Speaker 2: I only respond when people do it to me. I don't do it. I don't say Happy New Year. 00:49:19 Speaker 5: Oh you're one of those guys. Okay, I'll keep that in mind. I'll keep that in mind. 00:49:25 Speaker 3: I did say Happy New Year to Lane Kiffin though, see. 00:49:29 Speaker 12: But that maybe that's because Lane's pretty good alluring people into situations like Demand Williams and all that. 00:49:34 Speaker 2: Maybe you know, I didn't reach out to Lane, but hey, have a great weekend. Thank you, Bud, thank you. That's Brady Quinn.
