00:01:05

All right, So some questions coming in here. One person writes, Matt, it feels on the Athletic article about JMI feel like for the last few weeks you haven't really been given your opinion on this. Now that you've read it, where do you actually stand on it? I now feel like I understand a little more, at least about their mindset. I honestly don't know, because I don't.

00:01:58
Speaker 2: I don't.

00:01:59
Speaker 3: The proof is in the pudding, right, So that's why I want to know about UK Healthcare. I mean, I know UK Healthcare has expanded a lot. I know it's got a lot more real estate. I know it's got a lot more hospitals, I think the analogy from healthcare and sports though, as you would say, Okay, our patient's outcomes better, And I don't know the answer to that question. So if they are, then that may be very successful. At sports. The question will be does whatever structure they use, does Kentucky win?

00:02:29
Speaker 2: Right?

00:02:29
Speaker 3: I mean that's gonna be ultimately the bottom line. Does it provide the resources and the decision making process that leads to wins? And I think we'll have to see, you know, I think there's some I like the focus this idea that we've got to look at it from a business perspective. I think that's reality. I'm skeptical about the LLC and US being the first school to do it, but some people are bigger risk takers than I am, right, So you know, we'll see. I want it to work. We need it to work. I think UK and JMI should have done this conversation a year ago and should have like, let people know better.

00:03:12
Speaker 2: But we are where we are now, and we'll have to see.

00:03:15
Speaker 3: I think there's some quotes in there though that Shannon, they better work or they'll stick with them.

00:03:19
Speaker 2: That's right.

00:03:20
Speaker 1: I'm gonna remember that.

00:03:21
Speaker 2: It's we're gonna Scage McDuck.

00:03:22
Speaker 3: I mean, even though UK didn't say Scrooge McDuck, I will remember Scrooge McDuck. Yes, because the next time UK or JMI says, hey, we need money, I'm gonna think of Scrooge McDuck.

00:03:33
Speaker 2: It's gonna be hard to ask for money when you're Scrooge McDuck.

00:03:36
Speaker 1: That's right, yeah, because all the greed that you're gonna think.

00:03:40
Speaker 3: But at the same time, like, if we're getting players left and right and we're winning and they're Scrooge McDuck, then it's a win win for.

00:03:46
Speaker 1: Everybody, right, Yep, that's all that matters most people.

00:03:49
Speaker 2: That's all that will matter.

00:03:50
Speaker 3: So I guess it's kind of like we'll wait and see. I hope more universities announced they're doing this, though, Drew, because I kind of get nervous if we're out on a limb by herself and.

00:04:02
Speaker 4: I'm you know this is this is a good spin on it. If only Mitch Barnhardt had said something along these lines instead of yelling enough when people ask this in September, maybe we could have avoided a Well, they've done a long however, many months of worrying.

00:04:13
Speaker 3: They've done a horrible job of pr the knucklehead comment. There's just been a huge amount of mistakes. But I am optimistic that I've heard in the last twenty four hours forty eight hours that there's some realization that, yeah, we didn't do all that correctly, and so hopefully that ends up being the case.

00:04:31
Speaker 1: Well, did it take that Brett Setzer letter to kind of somebody, you know, a power player.

00:04:35
Speaker 2: Think gets a crinical mass of.

00:04:40
Speaker 3: Let's see, how do I put this? I gotta be careful, you know, Shannon, Everything I say.

00:04:46
Speaker 5: Now that's recorded.

00:04:50
Speaker 2: Yeah, it's amazing.

00:04:52
Speaker 3: How like if you go on the internet, people are they think I'm oz like everything that happens, I'm magically like words, I you know.

00:05:02
Speaker 2: What you were, It's unbelievable.

00:05:04
Speaker 3: Like I we are not near we are I think we have some power. We are nearly as powerful as people think. But you combined over the last few days, from the from Demarcus's cousins, Demarcus's comments to to you know, the coaches, to uh one of the families of the player, you know players family member, it's like you don't even ultimately my my responsibilities to the audience, and so I just have to like be responsible to the audience, and so to the audience, you know, you sit here and say, well, what do you say? Here's what I think is the problem. I think mentioned Mark Pope were one hundred percent confident that everything they were doing in basketball was gonna work. Mark Pope didn't say we had a ferrari because he thought this was what was gonna happen. And I think for the first time there's been a realization, you know what, it didn't quite work like we thought, and I'm hoping that leads to a readjustment. I think until probably Ryan the SEC tournament, I think Mark Pope thought we were going to make a run.

00:06:12
Speaker 2: I believe that, I really do. I think he did.

00:06:15
Speaker 3: And then I think maybe there was a realization as we were losing to Florida for the third time that maybe we wouldn't, which is why he didn't do the tournament, you know what I mean, the tournament selection and all that. But so I think maybe there's a realization now that they got to do stuff a little bit differently, So we'll see. That's that's where my view is. Now, let's talk about Michael Wilbo. I love PTI, Ryan, I haven't watched PTI much in recent years, but I love I mean Tony Kornheiser is one of my three heroes in entertainment. Love Tony Kornheiser. I've always shanned and tolerated Willbond. Yeah, okay, love Cornheiser. Tolerate Wilbond. But Willbonon hates Kentucky Ryan. He's always hated Kentucky.

00:07:13
Speaker 1: Always been a little anti UK for whatever reason, I don't know why.

00:07:16
Speaker 3: He blasted us when Tubby Smith left. He blasted us for getting rid of Billy Gillespie. He blasted us for not appreciating cow and now he's blasting us for not appreciating Pope. On the same show where he acknowledges that Hubert Davis maybe should go, he blasts us for having any conversations about Pope. And by the way, has anyone Pope's not going anywhere? Right?

00:07:44
Speaker 2: No?

00:07:44
Speaker 1: No, no?

00:07:46
Speaker 5: On Facebook?

00:07:47
Speaker 3: He's not going anywhere. But Will Bond and he does this about every two or three years. Decides to rant about Kentucky fans. And here's what he says.

00:07:57
Speaker 6: I think it's hard for Kentucky to fire Mark Pope.

00:08:00
Speaker 7: He's a grad, is a hard goos Kentucky to fire anybody, well, he goes one better than you, Bert Davis.

00:08:06
Speaker 6: He was the captain on a national championship team under Rick Patino. He made the Sweet sixteen last year. He's forty six and twenty six in two years if.

00:08:17
Speaker 7: Either if I fired, there will be a line outside the door to hire either.

00:08:23
Speaker 1: Or Is two years enough for Pope?

00:08:25
Speaker 6: I don't know.

00:08:26
Speaker 2: I don't I see. I don't look at it in that context.

00:08:28
Speaker 7: I look at it as how greedy is Kentucky.

00:08:31
Speaker 2: They're the greediest.

00:08:33
Speaker 7: If you line up all the blue bloods to say who's the greediest on the on the totem pole when it comes to college baskets college basketball, the answer is content's.

00:08:43
Speaker 1: A get out question.

00:08:44
Speaker 6: What do you think it helps Mark Pope that Rick Patino and John Calipari are in the sweet sixteen?

00:08:50
Speaker 8: What do you think they're thinking of Lexington?

00:08:51
Speaker 9: You know?

00:08:52
Speaker 6: But I will say this, they got beat by a two seed.

00:08:55
Speaker 2: Ido State's a two seed, all right?

00:08:58
Speaker 3: So couple things always annoys me when people who don't watch college basketball Drew decide they're the experts of college basketball.

00:09:06
Speaker 2: And that happens in March every year, right.

00:09:08
Speaker 4: H Wilbond probably wasn't watching a lot of cons. He hadn't watched the Kentucky game all season. Second, he says, he acts like we fired Patino in cal Perry.

00:09:17
Speaker 2: Did we fire either of those coaches?

00:09:19
Speaker 1: He did not. They both left on their own.

00:09:21
Speaker 2: Did we fire Tummy Smith?

00:09:22
Speaker 1: Did not?

00:09:23
Speaker 2: He left on his own.

00:09:24
Speaker 5: The person we fired was.

00:09:24
Speaker 3: Billy Gillespie, and I'll defend that one in court. All Right, we didn't fire any of these people. So this idea that we just fire people. Rick Patino left on his own. Kentucky fans didn't want Rick Patino to go, did they, Nock No, cal cal left on his own. Now, a lot of Kentucky fans did want him to go, maybe the majority, probably the majority. But he still left on his own. Had he wanted to Drew, he'd have been back, right, They already did the video.

00:09:59
Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean, and he was coming back.

00:10:01
Speaker 3: But you know what, we are greedy. Yes, that's why we're Kentucky. We are greedy, and in this context, greed is good. That's how you're a blue blood. You want to be successful in sports, you gotta win all the time. Kentucky wants to win all the time. Are our expectations unreasonable? Maybe sometimes, but the moment we're not. You know what, we become Indiana? You want us to become Indiana? Is Indiana a desirable job? So Kentucky fans are greedy, but greed is not bad. Kentucky fans are the kindest, best people. Do we have nutjobs? Yes, but so does every fan base. Every fan base says nut jobs.

00:10:48
Speaker 2: Louisville.

00:10:48
Speaker 3: I like to make fun of Louisville, but generally speaking, I think their fans are good. Right, Generally speaking, I think Louisville's fans are good. They had nut jobs, they got people saying crazy stuff. Everybody does. Act like we're the only people with nutjobs is insane.

00:11:03
Speaker 4: Yeah, and we live in a world where nutjobs with social media, I mean, they get a bigger platform than you used to just be them yelling at the water cooler at the office. So it makes it look worse. But on the greedy thing, I get so annoyed when people talk about Kentucky can be the worst. They're allowed to have unreasonable expectations when they do things like have twenty thousand people at a press conference for the coach in April or fill entire arenas on the road. I mean all the good things about Kentucky. When you care that much and you have that much passion, when you have a fourteen loss season, you're probably gonna be a little down because you're so invested in it emotionally, financially, everything. You make it your life and that's what makes Kentucky fans so good and the best. But then people spin that to make it like you sound like we're just crazy people. Whenever we're disappointed, it comes with it like it comes with it. Part of being at Kentucky is when you win, we will treat you as a king.

00:11:56
Speaker 3: You will become the most popular and rich person in the state. John Caliperi and Rick Patino were legends here. They were beloved like no one has been beloved. But the counter to that is you're gonna get paid ten million dollars. Well, then when things don't go well and you lose to Oakland Saint Peter's, you're gonna hear it. That's just how it is. That's life. You know, what's a good job, Shannon, In some ways the president of the United States, you know, it's a bad job. In some ways, the president of the United States. You know why you could end up on your coins. You could put yourself on them. Shit, that's true, you could. But you're also gonna get criticized every single day. That's just how that job is.

00:12:47
Speaker 9: And half of America is gonna hate you.

00:12:48
Speaker 3: But here, if you win, all love you. Yeah, no one's gonna be a And people still love Mark Pope. No one wants everyone loves it. We all want him to work, So I just will bond. And these people who, like Drew says, they focus only on the difficult part of this. What about what this state does for its coaches and how much this matters to people. Yes, there's gonna be negativity on the other side, that's how it goes. Now, David is going to articulate this better than me. David, what do you have to say to wilbon.

00:13:25
Speaker 10: Well? First of all, I hate I hate that group being lectured by a cuchpan.

00:13:30
Speaker 8: That would as the apartment.

00:13:32
Speaker 9: Even even though he would do it, but what any other said would do. But he was one of them. He was one of the main people that praised Cubs fans for the harassing apartment.

00:13:42
Speaker 3: He did a lot of people forget that, A lot of the recent apartment had to leave Chicago with the stuff.

00:13:47
Speaker 2: Wilbond said, exactly, so who he is?

00:13:52
Speaker 9: Lecture us? And you know it's it's like he hated us.

00:13:56
Speaker 1: I remember in two other nine before Bill goes to he was fired, he said he hoped Kentucky never wins another game.

00:14:03
Speaker 10: He's supposed to be a journalist.

00:14:05
Speaker 1: He's supposed to be unbiased.

00:14:06
Speaker 3: He's supposed to he's sposed.

00:14:09
Speaker 9: He thinks he's bailoss in my opinion.

00:14:13
Speaker 2: Tell him, David, well done, David.

00:14:16
Speaker 1: Where did they get those clothes at a toilet store?

00:14:19
Speaker 2: That's right, David, exactly.

00:14:24
Speaker 1: You go, David, Well go ahead, homed on.

00:14:30
Speaker 9: I dare you to be on Matt Show. If you are listening to this, I dare you to be on Match and defend yourself.

00:14:38
Speaker 2: Look at David David cooking today, David's cooking.

00:14:41
Speaker 3: Let me ask you a question, David, where do you think Will Bob got those opinions.

00:14:46
Speaker 10: The toilet store?

00:14:47
Speaker 2: That's right, thank you, David, well done. Seven. That dude will always cheer me up. We'll take a break and be right back. Chaos. I like uh, I like angry David.

00:15:01
Speaker 1: It's good stuff, really good stuff.

00:15:03
Speaker 3: Got a little doofin Schmertzy in him too does maybe that's where I got it. Uh, all right, So no Cha lind Of Farms, it's grilling season. You can stock up with no Cha lind Of Farms beef, the beef we use at ks Bar. You guys, you got a new delivery coming right.

00:15:20
Speaker 1: We already got it. They brought it in this week and so we got back from Saint Louis. The bags were ready for us and I opened up. Mine was like massive ribbys, I mean massive. I can't wait to get to the grill.

00:15:31
Speaker 4: On thowing right now. Picked up the package yesterday and it's ready to be cooked probably tomorrow.

00:15:36
Speaker 2: Yeah, I have my package.

00:15:37
Speaker 3: I don't know how I'm gonna cook it chaint it, but I'm but I think I'm gonna take it with me tomorrow for baseball game.

00:15:42
Speaker 1: You're taking to the baseball game, dude, just hang out with it.

00:15:45
Speaker 3: You take it to my buddy's house and we're gonna go. I wasn't gonna just take a raw package of no Cha lind Of beef into the game.

00:15:54
Speaker 2: I know you have two seats.

00:15:55
Speaker 1: I thought maybe that's the other seat is getting the ribbot was getting it.

00:15:58
Speaker 3: Yeah, thank you anyway. No Chae Lindon Farms beef. I'm looking forward to it. These guys grill with it all summer. Go to no Cha Lindafarms dot com or call eight five nine, seven oh seven, seven thousand and four, no Cha lind of Farms if you have questions, want to schedule a farm visit, get delivery. No Cha lind of Farms is Kentucky proud. One person writes, Matt will Bond has always hated us, But maybe we are a little greedy. We should just accept it. Yes we are, but that's good in this context.

00:16:28
Speaker 1: We treat every school in the country wishes they had a greedy fan base like Kentucky. Every coach, which is they had of greedy, greedy fan base like Kentucky.

00:16:37
Speaker 3: And in the end, we're still there for all these guys. Rick Patino left us, went to our rival, coached our rival for a decade, took them to a title, gotten scandals, flipped us off, and has guess what been welcome back because as fans we want to love these people. The same thing will happen to John cal Perry one day. Thing will happen here one day he'll get brought back. And let me give you a little secret. When John cal Perry's career is over, what's he gonna remember most fondly Arkansas or Kentucky.

00:17:10
Speaker 1: Probably his years at Kentucky.

00:17:11
Speaker 3: It's gonna be his years at Kentucky. All these guys Patinos coached everywhere. He says Kentucky's the best. He'll say it at Saint John's Drew, Yes.

00:17:18
Speaker 1: Yeah, he does.

00:17:19
Speaker 5: He'll probably say it this weekend.

00:17:21
Speaker 3: He'll make the National Championship and say I wish it was at Kentucky.

00:17:24
Speaker 1: Because it Camelot for a reason, like that's what will happen we brought Tubby back.

00:17:33
Speaker 2: I just I just don't.

00:17:34
Speaker 3: I I'll take arrows from the fan base to me sometimes, but I'm not letting the national beadia crush our fan base.

00:17:42
Speaker 2: They don't deserve it.

00:17:43
Speaker 3: Yes, we have crazies, but we have the best fan base in the country and also probably cares for its players.

00:17:51
Speaker 2: And coaches more than any as well.

00:17:54
Speaker 1: What's you said, as you said it several times about when Seth Greenview would say something, you know, don't tell us try to have a fan.

00:17:59
Speaker 3: Yeah, don't tell I mean and Michael Wilboa is not even a fan at least Seth Greenberg's in the sport.

00:18:04
Speaker 2: Wupon doesn't even know. I mean, he doesn't even know what he's talking about.

00:18:07
Speaker 10: Ryan, go ahead, Ryan, Hello, Yes, Hello, good morning guys. Some guys listeners.

00:18:15
Speaker 2: Second time caller, all right, what's up?

00:18:19
Speaker 10: I just want to know if you guys were going to be doing a show at Comic Con this weekend. It starts tomorrow and goes through Sunday.

00:18:25
Speaker 3: We are not, but I hope you enjoy it. I didn't realize that was this weekend. I hope it's fun.

00:18:31
Speaker 2: It should be all right, Well, good.

00:18:33
Speaker 3: One, enjoy Comic Con. I appreciate the call. We will, however, tomorrow, and these guys are just learning this, Shannon. We will be doing the show tomorrow from Red's opening day.

00:18:42
Speaker 5: You guys have fun.

00:18:44
Speaker 2: We will be at Holy Grail tomorrow, Ryan, Okay, doing the show.

00:18:48
Speaker 3: You won't be able to hear it, but we will be there for the atmosphere tomorrow for opening day. And as a surprise, Ryan, if you would like to go, I will take you to open it.

00:19:00
Speaker 2: Really would you like to go?

00:19:02
Speaker 1: I would love to go.

00:19:03
Speaker 2: Actually, all right, so now you're going to opening Day.

00:19:05
Speaker 1: Nice, very nice. So thanks Dad, I appreciate that.

00:19:09
Speaker 2: So there you go.

00:19:10
Speaker 1: He's not calling dad. It's just weird.

00:19:13
Speaker 2: It is weird because he's a lot older to him, Daddy.

00:19:15
Speaker 1: And come on, dude, don't forget your rib I think it's both a ribbi or a grill him on in the seats out there.

00:19:22
Speaker 3: Yeah, they play the Red Sox tomorrow opening Day, so we will be if you're at the opening Day tomorrow from ten to twelve, we'll be sitting outside on the patio at Holy Grail.

00:19:30
Speaker 1: It's like a holiday in Cincinnati. Opening Day. It is just a day long celebration.

00:19:34
Speaker 2: Yeah, and hopefully we'll get service. I'll let Ryan worry about that.

00:19:39
Speaker 3: Drew, Okay, thanks, Oh, he's got it, no problem, Cecil, go ahead, cecil.

00:19:45
Speaker 9: Hey, good morning, fellas. I'm gonna shift gears here. I got them. I'm totally blind and I got a friend, a lot of friends. It's blind in the visually impaired world, and our only way to listen to ball games is on the radio. Yes, and Givens is knowledgeable, knowledgeable, but he interrupts Tom all the time when the ball's in play, and that is just totally obnoxious. How can we communicate this to him or his bosses? Because all the time he goes the balls long long, long, short, short, short, and sometimes he sounds like a Batman episode. Oh oh oh, he.

00:20:25
Speaker 3: Does get excited. I kind of like when he gets excited. But are you saying because I just want to make sure I understand what you're saying. You're saying you're since you're visually impaired, like when he does it, it's hard for you to follow what's happening during the game.

00:20:37
Speaker 9: Let yes, let Tom call the ball while the ball's in play. When the ball's not in play, you provide the color. Yeah, okay, that makes sense.

00:20:45
Speaker 3: Now, I understand what you're saying. I'd never really thought of it like that. I'm sure I can tell you. Knowing Jack, I'm sure he doesn't do that on purpose.

00:20:53
Speaker 9: No, no, no, no, I didn't say that, But I'm just saying, putting the balls in play, let Tom do his job.

00:21:00
Speaker 2: Yeah.

00:21:01
Speaker 9: Tom did a game with a guy named Jordan Cornett this weekend, and it was a breath of fresh air to hear a color commentator not interrupt him every single time. Yeah, all right, I love I love giving Yeah, I appreci communicate that.

00:21:19
Speaker 2: I'm sure he was.

00:21:20
Speaker 3: My guess is and I appreciate the call that that it'll get communicated, you know through this show that if somebody will have heard it, Steve, go ahead, Steve.

00:21:33
Speaker 10: Hey, guys, got a couple of comments, and then get your all's opinions. You know, we've been hearing for two years about how smart Ope is, but is he basketball savvy? Smart? He may be book smart, but I don't think as far as the basketball savvy, maybe he's not quite there yet.

00:21:54
Speaker 2: So you're saying you think like.

00:21:58
Speaker 3: So you're saying these BookSmart but not basket I mean you don't feel like he's a I mean, I do feel like he understands X and o's concept.

00:22:05
Speaker 2: You don't. You don't feel that's the case.

00:22:08
Speaker 10: I don't think so because it didn't transpire this year on the court. And I guess the other thing, who do we get on the staff that can mentor point guards?

00:22:22
Speaker 2: And I don't know, reason Drew.

00:22:24
Speaker 3: Do you know who works like with individual positions or on the staff?

00:22:28
Speaker 5: I don't mean Jason harr was probably a big one.

00:22:30
Speaker 2: Yeah, that's true, he probably was.

00:22:32
Speaker 10: There's one guy, there's one guy out there. And if we've got these supposedly unlimited funds, there's a guy in Arkansas we need to go make him say no, and that's Tyler Uless.

00:22:48
Speaker 2: Well, I appreciate the cause.

00:22:49
Speaker 3: I mean, I think that would be tough because of his relationship with cal. You know, all these guys there's a personal part of this. They have their university and there. I mean we saw that with with a bunch of players last week or two. But you know, I do think that I can see I think it would be nice to have one of those kind of guys.

00:23:07
Speaker 2: But Mark is also a former player too, so you do have that.

00:23:10
Speaker 3: But yeah, Tyler Ewis, I think he'll be a good point guard, coach and mentor. Uh now and and at some point obviously working with Darius A cuff. Now, that's going pretty good. We'll take a break right back. KSR.

00:23:22
Speaker 2: TJ. Smith personal injury attorney called TJ. He'll make them pay now.

00:23:27
Speaker 1: More of Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage.

00:23:30
Speaker 2: Here's Matt Jones Summer of Ellie Shannon.

00:23:33
Speaker 1: Yeah, they might have a spring of Ellie.

00:23:36
Speaker 3: My my, My excitement about the Reds a little muted because Hunter Green and Nick Lodolo are starting the season on the disabled list.

00:23:45
Speaker 1: More blisters, theyrelters.

00:23:47
Speaker 3: What is with these these blisters? Lodolo and his blisters, I don't get it. We talked about why why they get so many blisters.

00:23:57
Speaker 1: I remember I don't remember pictures back in my day getting blisters them bad at old man. Right, they were tougher back then, weren't they. Ryan right, he's pickled juice.

00:24:04
Speaker 3: Yeah, well so I'm a little but I do think our lineup will be better. Matt McLean's had a good summer, but I'm excited. I'll be in it until at least May.

00:24:13
Speaker 1: Yeah, that's about right. Give them thirty days.

00:24:15
Speaker 3: Or next week. Yeah, if they lose to the Red Sox in three straight. One person writes, Matt, does it bother anyone but me? That Ryan says in his ad gravy and biscuits and not biscuits and gravy.

00:24:28
Speaker 1: Never even noticed it. I have north either.

00:24:30
Speaker 5: You said it? Is that how you normally say it?

00:24:35
Speaker 1: I think I say biscuits and gravy.

00:24:37
Speaker 2: They say in your Wild eggs ad you say gravy and biscuits.

00:24:41
Speaker 1: Well maybe I thought they wanted it. Written that day.

00:24:43
Speaker 2: Okay, but it is biscuits and gravy.

00:24:45
Speaker 1: Right, That's how I've always said it, biscuits and gravy.

00:24:49
Speaker 3: I don't think I've ever heard if you said gravy and biscuits, that's psychopathic behavior because I don't think anyone says that.

00:24:54
Speaker 1: Maybe we're starting a new trend. Now you'll catch one.

00:24:56
Speaker 4: Can you say like carrots and peas or do you have to say peas and carrots?

00:25:00
Speaker 3: Can you say jelly and peanut butter? That all sounds weird, It sounds awkward. Yeah, yeah, I don't think you can say gravy and miss. I think it's biscuits and gravy, PE's and carrots.

00:25:13
Speaker 2: Ham?

00:25:13
Speaker 3: You can you say eggs and ham? I love green eggs. I love ham and green eggs.

00:25:19
Speaker 2: Doesn't work the same with the rhyme though, but it doesn't. Yeah, all right, So it.

00:25:25
Speaker 1: Is wildcat eggs, wild eggs Wednesday.

00:25:28
Speaker 2: Okay, wild eggs Wednesday. Do you have a word?

00:25:31
Speaker 1: We do, and Mario is ready to post it on the KSR Twitter account.

00:25:35
Speaker 3: So it's on the KSR the Show Twitter account. If you answer it in the first ten minutes, Mario will make uh, We'll give somebody randomly fifty dollars from wild Eggs.

00:25:47
Speaker 1: Did he do spell check?

00:25:48
Speaker 2: Did you spell this word correctly?

00:25:52
Speaker 1: I did? I said it correctly to him? You sure?

00:25:54
Speaker 2: Okay, all right, we'll.

00:25:55
Speaker 3: See it goes. It's going up on ksar toll. You got ten minutes to answer right there in the comments. All right, So we need to talk about Drew Derek Johnson. So Derek is Jasper's uncle?

00:26:08
Speaker 2: Is that right?

00:26:08
Speaker 3: Ryan?

00:26:09
Speaker 1: Yeah, Dennison Dereck are brothers.

00:26:10
Speaker 3: Yes, Derek played it. Derek played it at UK, and Derek is Jasper's uncle. And he posted this on Facebook? Was this Facebook last night?

00:26:23
Speaker 2: Is that right?

00:26:25
Speaker 3: As a former Kentucky football player at UK, someone who turned down every Power five school in the country, just like my brother, to help build this university, I'm disgusted and appalled by the way some of our fans talk about these kids. Whether it's fake media sites or official ones, it doesn't matter. Cowardly behavior is still part of the fan base. I'm glad Big Couz said what he said because too many people speaking on the game have no real understanding of it. They pick and choose who to target and create narratives depending on who they want to scapegoat. I get it, it drives clicks, but it should never come at the expense of kids. Let me be clear, it's not everyone. I'm grateful for those who truly support I used to wonder why older people in my community didn't rock with UK. Now I understand why, and honestly, it's why. No kid in their right mind would enjoy being here if they don't fit in. I'm thankful for those who support my family. But these last four months, what I thought would be an exciting time watching my nephew Chase's dreams have turned into one of the most disappointing experiences I've ever seen. I've never witnessed people be so nasty, whether it's on real sites or in comments or not. There are real people make it behind those comments. He played playing in thirty second intervals and never really given a chance. Not my decision, but hopefully you'll get your wish and then he has a skull and crossbones at the end of it. Ryan, you are close with the family or friends with the family, What are your thoughts?

00:27:48
Speaker 1: It's tough for me because You're right, I've known these guys for thirty years, and I've known Jassper since he was a little guy and I want him to succeed. But I think they would all admit the season didn't go the way they thought it would on the court. Off the court. Jasper would probably amit that himself. But if if they're saying that about my kid, I'm I'm upset too. I mean, I can see where he's coming from, because.

00:28:10
Speaker 2: There's two different parts of it.

00:28:12
Speaker 3: There's the part aimed at fans, and then I would assume Ryan, the big Couz thing, I mean Cousins was talking about me.

00:28:21
Speaker 2: I mean, is that how you read it?

00:28:24
Speaker 1: I didn't think about that, but that may be why he is implying.

00:28:27
Speaker 3: I think that's probably I think that part. I think part of it's clearly about fans in general. There's also a shot at Mark Pope at the end, saying he only gets to play in thirty second intervals, Drew.

00:28:39
Speaker 2: What do you think.

00:28:42
Speaker 4: I'm not gonna hide from being critical of Jasper Johnson. I don't think any of us on this show have been nasty whatsoever. We all know him personally and really like him. Heck, he was just on the show. That's great, Yeah great, And you know, I would probably even side with the Johnson's on how Jasper was used early on and not being a fit and not being a good year. So it's any part that he thinks were it fault, I won't run from it. I've been critical, but also I mean, he hasn't played well this year. I don't know what you want me to say. I wanted him to play better. If if I could write the script of this season, Jaspard had fifteen points per game. But then at the end it threw me off. It seemed as and he's it was his first Facebook post this year, by the way, it seems he's upset with Pope too, And that would be if I were in issues, my bigger issue would be that, you know, he said thirty seconds a game, I would be more upset with how Jasper was recruited than not used. But you know it is what I mean. We can pull up his stats. I'm not I'm not trying to be nasty whatsoever, but I think it's completely fair when he had the a couple of minutes he did at Iowa State to say, you know that didn't help the game there.

00:29:42
Speaker 3: Yeah, this, I mean, this is hard, like I don't know, it's hard. I don't know Derek, but I like him a lot. I'm sure he's a great guy. Like I don't know him. You know, there are three parts of this part about the fans. He's right that there are fans that overreact. Again, I'll say what I say about Will Bond. There's gonna be fans. Find me a fan base in the country that doesn't have mean people in the fan base like and I hate that. Kids don't deserve that. Kids deserve no personal criticism, but it's also not realistic in today's social media world. And they're also being paid now, and that changes things that the narrative.

00:30:24
Speaker 2: It just does.

00:30:25
Speaker 3: And if Jasper hits his dreams and goes to the NBA, he's gonna get Does he not think he's gonna get criticized there, Shannon? He is, you know now. At the same time, if it's my nephew, I'm gonna be upset too. And I think Derek has a right to say all of that if he wants. I don't know that it's helpful when people do that, but he can do it. Man, if it was my nephew, I'd probably do the same thing. He's also criticizing Pope for playing. Maybe Jasper should have played more earlier in the year, but I mean, guys, should he have played more late in the year.

00:30:54
Speaker 2: Do you believe that.

00:31:00
Speaker 4: Y'all wanted Aberdeen to play till his legs fell off? I mean that's nothing against Jasper, nothing against.

00:31:04
Speaker 3: Him, but like it is what it is now, the part about you know, assuming he's referencing me because of the cousin's line. You know, I'm a little bit at a loss right now in the last forty eight hours, because I feel like some of this is I'm really at a loss as to what people want, like for me, I don't I don't really know how to do this job if it like, if nothing works that people say. I have never been personally critical to any player, I don't think. Since I've done this, I think I've probably been more pro player than almost anyone because I always see them as like college kids. I like Jasper. I've never i have not said one bad thing about Jasper's part. I've said he has not played well. But what are you supposed to say? I mean, if he comes in and he and he's minus nine and two minutes, what are you supposed to do? Just ignore it, Like, what are you supposed to do? I don't know, I don't really know what people want. Like the Cousins thing really like it probably shouldn't have but it's because it was him and because I like him. It really like bothered me. And I talked to one of his friends last night and we talked about it, and hopefully that'll that'll get better. But I you know, this show, I don't think people understand what sports radio is. I think one of the cool things about KSR is because it has become so universal, it is listened to so much more than other sports shows. We get held to a standard that like, I don't think anybody else gets held to. Does anyone Shannon turn on the other sports shows in this town. No, I mean, but if you did listen, they're all more negative than we are.

00:33:05
Speaker 5: I was driving yesterday with Abbey. We were going to lunch.

00:33:07
Speaker 4: We were listening to the show and they were going off pretty gong on Kentucky basketball, and I was like, I haven't said anything half this song.

00:33:12
Speaker 2: I mean, I like Alan Cutler, but he's more negative than me. Yeah, he's got no filter.

00:33:18
Speaker 3: The guys in the Louisville market that do Kentucky are much more negative than me. They mock me for not being negative enough. I'm not even the most negative person on this show.

00:33:30
Speaker 2: I love him. But Ryan has been in football and Drew was in basketball this year.

00:33:35
Speaker 4: Yesterday people were mad at me because Frank didn't make an appearance. It's like, I'm not just gonna start yelling at.

00:33:40
Speaker 5: The wall, and I'm mad.

00:33:41
Speaker 2: I'm really at a loss.

00:33:43
Speaker 3: For what some portions. I mean, we still have a lawyer. I mean, like most of you all have been wonderful, even in the comment but in like comments. But I don't know what exactly people want us to do. You know, Matt, you ran off cal Matt, you didn't run off Stoops fast enough. Matt loved Mitch, Matt hated Mitch. Matt is running Pope off. Matt should call for Pope's job, Shannon, I'm not oz.

00:34:11
Speaker 1: Yeah, we don't get to make those calls.

00:34:12
Speaker 3: I can only give my opinion, and you know what I agree with. I agree with DeMarcus and I agree with Derek like I don't. No, I don't know any more than anybody else. I'm just part of a show that hopefully is entertaining. But I am a loss when it comes to this is now a former UK football player. And then with DeMarcus, like, I don't know what people want those people. I know what the fans want, but I don't really know. Ryan, You've done this longer than I have. And then there's the part of it that like and I love you all, but like Ryan can say something and then it's me that gets yelled at.

00:34:56
Speaker 2: Guilty about association.

00:34:57
Speaker 10: You know that.

00:35:00
Speaker 1: Philosopher said the whim blows hardest at the top of the flag pole. You're at the top of the flag pole.

00:35:05
Speaker 3: I get it, But unlike these other people, I can't control the games.

00:35:11
Speaker 4: If we didn't exist, Kentucky still would have lost fourteen games, but I guess I would still have this.

00:35:17
Speaker 2: I don't think that's the case.

00:35:20
Speaker 5: That's crazy.

00:35:21
Speaker 3: It is crazy, but like Matt's fault or Ksr's fault, and I know, and to some extent, I guess it sounds like I'm like, you know, whining, and maybe I am because of this. These last few days abummed me out, Like I I really enjoy interacting with fans, but I'm just gonna have to stop outside of the text machine because I the amount of people I had a teacher of mine from school who I saw say something about Matt Jones. I wrote them and they were like, oh, I didn't know that was you.

00:35:54
Speaker 1: Matt Jones is really an uncommon name.

00:35:56
Speaker 3: Well, I mean I went by Matthew when I was in school. So but I'm just saying, like, you know, so listen to Derek. You know, I certainly don't think anyone on this show has been at all personal to Jasper. I think Jasper's I wish him nothing but success. At the same time, though, when he's playing, you can't do this job and not have criticism. And if a random person on the Internet says something mean to a player, that's awful. But it's not Shannon's fault.

00:36:33
Speaker 1: You can blame me if you want, though I don't care well, so it's hard to ignore it when it's your family or if somebody you're close to, you know.

00:36:40
Speaker 2: But you went through it with Dane. Yeah right, and.

00:36:44
Speaker 1: I just started just ignoring blocking people.

00:36:48
Speaker 2: But you also didn't blame Alan Color for it.

00:36:51
Speaker 1: I blame Color for everything. No, No, I'm just kidding.

00:36:55
Speaker 3: So anyway, you know, it is what it is. When I saw that, I was like, that stinks.

00:37:02
Speaker 1: It's tough. It's kind of tough to talk about.

00:37:04
Speaker 3: Yeah, I don't know. But for the Johnson family, there's been very few people that are more legendary athletic families in Kentucky than that one.

00:37:13
Speaker 5: Yep, And uh, you know, I'll leave us aside.

00:37:16
Speaker 4: I just hate that the Johnsons, of all people have had a negative experience, not even fans, just Jasper not having the year he wanted. If any family deserve to have another kid have a good run.

00:37:26
Speaker 2: I agree with you they were the one.

00:37:29
Speaker 1: Yep. So wish you could have a redo.

00:37:32
Speaker 2: That's probably the best way to say. It probably would be better if everybody could have a redo. It doesn't look like, though, after those comments that he will be back. Was that fair to say?

00:37:41
Speaker 1: I'd say the Beny nods are high that he won't be back. Yeah.

00:37:44
Speaker 2: Yeah.

00:37:45
Speaker 3: H Clark's Pumping Shop if you would like to get gas, Clark's Reward, apps, food, coffee, whatever.

00:37:50
Speaker 2: Clark's Pumping Shop.

00:37:51
Speaker 3: They got snacks, they got drinks, they got ice, they got cold weather essentials. It's Clark's Pumpin' Shop, Bluegrass. Clark's Pumping Shop, Return refresh refuel locally driven gives back to UK Athletics, go to Clark's puppet job. We'll take a break, be right back.

00:38:05
Speaker 2: It's KASR.

00:38:08
Speaker 3: Work a back Tucky sports radio. If I'm nine two eight oh twenty two eighty seven. Uh, back to back, tweet, back to back message on the text machine, Shannon, this is a true story. Yeah one, you are. I love you, but you are too negative. You turned your back on Stoops way too soon. Next one, I don't think you're too negative. Of all, you stayed with Stoops way too long.

00:38:29
Speaker 1: The damn if you do, damn if you damn if you do, you.

00:38:31
Speaker 2: Damned if you don't.

00:38:33
Speaker 3: One person says, Matt, you should just say what you think and then the reaction is what it is and tell everybody to deal with it. Yeah, that's easy for people to say. But like, unfortunately, I'm not like that. Like again, I don't think a lot of people listen to a lot of sports talk radio Shannon to hear what other people are like, like a lot of sports talk radios.

00:38:49
Speaker 2: Like this is my opinion.

00:38:50
Speaker 3: Middle fingers up to everybody that disagrees, Like I just can't do that.

00:38:54
Speaker 9: No.

00:38:55
Speaker 1: Listening to Mike Francessa was the most up lesson to any other sports talk showing.

00:38:58
Speaker 3: I just can't do that. Like I'll admit, like I'm probably much more vulnerable than a lot of people in these in these jobs, like I don't want I don't want to fight with people. I really don't, especially with the UK people, cause like I want them to win. But on the same time, when you see Mitch Barnhart get two million dollars with no explanation, you have a choice. Do you say something about it and then maybe it gets corrected, or do you say nothing and then people go, you're just a mouthpiece for the university. Either way, you become the boogeyman. And you know, I'll admit, Ryan, it sucks. And the good thing for people is we'll do the show tomorrow and then I'm gone for six days and no one will have to hear my opinion for a little bit, so that'll be good.

00:39:46
Speaker 1: Things are so much better when you just win. You know, when you're rolling, you know, people overlook a lot of things. But when things are going bad and you lose.

00:39:53
Speaker 3: Friday's postgame show was fun, huh the no, I mean when we were in Saint Louis Us at that bar.

00:40:00
Speaker 1: After fun, it was awesome.

00:40:02
Speaker 2: That was just one Yeah, yeah, it was a lot of fun. Let's go to Jared, go ahead, Jared.

00:40:08
Speaker 8: Hey, Matt. So, I was listening to you know, Pope's Collins Show again last night, and something that stood out to me regarding Jasper Johnson is Bope was talking about how guys had to play out a position a lot, and he said that he used Jasper as his example, and he said, you know, Jasper was having to run point a lot. He's not really a point guard and he couldn't play off ball and cut and slash and shoot. But I don't understand why he couldn't, Like we never saw him play with Aberdeen. Why did he always have to back up Aberdeen as a point guard? Why couldn't he have played alongside Aberdeen?

00:40:48
Speaker 2: Maybe I heard Pope say that too.

00:40:51
Speaker 3: I guess what I don't understand is in Pope's mind, who was the backup point guard? Because he said over and over Aberdeen wasn't supposed to be the point guard and neither was Jasper. So he couldn't have thought Jayalen Lowe was going to play forty minutes a game.

00:41:05
Speaker 1: They tried it earlier that Colin Chandler was gonna supposed to be the backup point guard and that didn't work. It found out pretty quickly.

00:41:11
Speaker 5: So when he learned that November.

00:41:12
Speaker 3: So when he says people had to play out a position, I guess part of my question is, well, what was the mindset of what it was gonna because I don't know if Aberdeen wasn't supposed to be the point guard and Jasper wasn't and Chandler wasn't, who was. And he can't just say Travis Perry and a Kayden Lewis because they left in like May. You had a whole summer to get somebody you went and got yell of it, right.

00:41:35
Speaker 1: Yeah. I remember we had this conversation like in October November, and I think the plan was after Low it was going to be by committee with Chandler, Aberdeen, Jasper and oh Way. That thought that just by committee they could get one of those guys to just fill in a couple of minutes if needed.

00:41:49
Speaker 3: I mean, it's fair, but then it can't be the case. I appreciate the call that no one was out of everyone was out of position. Someone had to be there. Did I do Cornbrad Hampshannon amp dot com if you want to be able to rest, relax, get sleep. Cornbread Hip had a stressful day. Cornbread Hip full spectrum, flour only, HEMP, CBD gummies, topical oils. It's all there at cornbreadhimp dot com. Go through March grab them. They're in your stores, but order them online use my code KSR. It's cornbreadthimp dot com. I didn't mean for like the last thirty minutes to be that, but I do hope with Derek and all those guys like, we do the best we can and all I can do is ultimately give my opinion and the way people react to it is kind of is what it is. We will be at Red's opening day tomorrow, assuming we can get connected.

00:42:38
Speaker 2: We'll see you later. This has been Kentucky Sports Radio
