<v Speaker 3>back at the remarkable career of sid. He kind of
<v Speaker 3>disappeared in nineteen ninety seven.
<v Speaker 4>From the WWF. Yes, yeah, it's very weird.
<v Speaker 3>And we last we're with our hero here on our
<v Speaker 3>tribute TLF style to Sid, who, of course we lost
<v Speaker 3>this year. We had listened to the audio of him
<v Speaker 3>dropping the WWF Championship to Undertaker at WrestleMania thirteen, which
<v Speaker 3>of course was his second title run, and then after
<v Speaker 3>that we hit you with the deep dive of his
<v Speaker 3>winning the championship over Brettbart on the February seventeenth, nineteen
<v Speaker 3>ninety seven Raw, and it just seemed like, all right,
<v Speaker 3>Sid has now arrived. He's won the championship twice. He's
<v Speaker 3>now a firmly ensconced main event player. He's going to
<v Speaker 3>be around for a while, especially as WWFRE constitutes its
<v Speaker 3>image and tries to go more attitudinal and features him
<v Speaker 3>and things like the Raw is War opening package and
<v Speaker 3>all of that. And then he's gone. And you were
<v Speaker 3>really keen to point it out. I wasn't sure as
<v Speaker 3>if we went you would forget this or not recall it.
<v Speaker 3>But you remember the last time we saw Sid on
<v Speaker 3>WWF television.
<v Speaker 4>I do it, you know, because I, uh, just because
<v Speaker 4>what happened for me was I It's not because I
<v Speaker 4>remember it from being when I was watching back then.
<v Speaker 4>It's rewatching the raws more recently within the last like
<v Speaker 4>I don't know, probably eight eight, seven, eight years, whatever
<v Speaker 4>it is, because I saw the show. You know, I'm
<v Speaker 4>watching every war and then you know, he just vanishes
<v Speaker 4>kind of after you know, I think he fast pay
<v Speaker 4>per view was King of the Ring and then he's
<v Speaker 4>just kind of gone. And then a few weeks later,
<v Speaker 4>all of a sudden, he comes out as maybe Steve
<v Speaker 4>Austin's one of Steve Austin's potential partners for Canadian Stampede,
<v Speaker 4>and it was one of the most jarring things I'd
<v Speaker 4>ever seen.
<v Speaker 3>Tell me why, Tell me why?
<v Speaker 4>Because you know, as a fan, I just kind of
<v Speaker 4>accepted the fact that he was just gone, you know,
<v Speaker 4>that he was gone whatever. And he disappeared after King
<v Speaker 4>of the Ring and that was it, and so and
<v Speaker 4>even then he was I don't think I remember him
<v Speaker 4>being featured too much on TV, and so to see
<v Speaker 4>him come out and not really do anything, it's just
<v Speaker 4>an appearance, like his music hits and he comes out
<v Speaker 4>and poses, but that's it, and then he's gone, and
<v Speaker 4>that's kind of it. Like it's just a weird to me.
<v Speaker 4>It's it's like it's like Vader being in in the
<v Speaker 4>WW like way into ninety eight more than he should have,
<v Speaker 4>right than I'm comfortable, right more than you know, because
<v Speaker 4>you're like, are you serious? Like Vader was there and
<v Speaker 4>it's like, wait, Sid was still there, Like what the fuck?
<v Speaker 3>Right here, I am thinking that this was a big
<v Speaker 3>enough impact player that if he did anything on WDWF
<v Speaker 3>television I would remember, not there would be eight months
<v Speaker 3>after my last memory of the guy where he was
<v Speaker 3>actually still on television, right, And I definitely Sid fits
<v Speaker 3>that category. But you know that justified tribute show in
<v Speaker 3>Lapstom because you remember these things, of these these fleeting appearances.
<v Speaker 3>There are so many other wrestlers I'm sure that made
<v Speaker 3>appearances months after their last one and then disappeared into
<v Speaker 3>the night that we never think about again. But for Sid,
<v Speaker 3>it just seemed significant that he was missing. Was it
<v Speaker 3>was a noticeable absence, and like you said, he sort
<v Speaker 3>of popped his head back up one more time, very
<v Speaker 3>and much the same way he did in nineteen ninety
<v Speaker 3>six for the International Incident replacing Ultimate Warrior. Right here
<v Speaker 3>is that are preparing a multi person a tag team
<v Speaker 3>main event for in your house in July. The next year,
<v Speaker 3>his name is in the sauce again for Team USA,
<v Speaker 3>and I invite you to consider it because we've done
<v Speaker 3>Canadian Stampede. It's of course one of the best WWF
<v Speaker 3>pay per views of all time and so reflective of
<v Speaker 3>what was going to happen, absolutely and what the reflective
<v Speaker 3>of what was about to happen with Stone Cold taking
<v Speaker 3>off is the unquestionable top man in the business and
<v Speaker 3>the guy that would reverse the WWF's fortunes. But I
<v Speaker 3>invite you to consider. I invite you to consider Psycho
<v Speaker 3>sid being on Team USA at Canadian Stampede.
<v Speaker 9>I don't know how I feel about that, right.
<v Speaker 4>It kind of doesn't feel right like he feels because
<v Speaker 4>he's not someone I mean, not that Austin is either.
<v Speaker 4>But Austin's feud wasn't really about Canada versus the USA.
<v Speaker 4>He was just he was just picking on the hearts.
<v Speaker 4>But like l od theyre USA, you know, Chicago, you
<v Speaker 4>know the whole fucking thing, Shamrock.

<v Speaker 4>Ken Shamrock. Yeah, I guess I can kind of see
<v Speaker 4>that gold Dust. I can't really see although he's Hollywood,
<v Speaker 4>So I don't know, but he's definitely a stretch, But
<v Speaker 4>I think more of a stretch would be said, because
<v Speaker 4>he's a fucking loner, you know, that's his thing.
<v Speaker 3>Yep, yep, And whatever you try to place him in
<v Speaker 3>a group or a stable or in a bodyguard position,
<v Speaker 3>eventually he'll find a way to break out of that
<v Speaker 3>and it'll be someone's bright idea to give him a
<v Speaker 3>singles run toward the war title. And that's just name
<v Speaker 3>the organization he's ever been put into a tag team
<v Speaker 3>or a group scenario with. But I don't know. It's
<v Speaker 3>just it's such a significant landmark show in that team,
<v Speaker 3>as bizarre and motley crue as it was supporting Steve
<v Speaker 3>Austin at Canadian Stampede is so kind of burned in
<v Speaker 3>the memory and in the history that it's wild to
<v Speaker 3>think about SID being in there and how that might
<v Speaker 3>disrupt the dynamic, because the one thing you can say
<v Speaker 3>about Team USA at Canadian Stampede is Steve Austin was
<v Speaker 3>by far and away the brightest shining star in the.
<v Speaker 4>Bid Fay side, no question.
<v Speaker 3>But if SID was there, I wonder if that dilutes
<v Speaker 3>the intensity in the real sort of concentration of energy
<v Speaker 3>into what Steve Austin was doing.
<v Speaker 4>I don't know, I maybe, but I do feel like Stone.
<v Speaker 4>I feel like Austin at that point was such a
<v Speaker 4>fucking a spark plug that he would not have allowed
<v Speaker 4>Sid to overshadow him. Yeah, you know, like I think
<v Speaker 4>he would have. Fucking I think he would have. He
<v Speaker 4>would have found holes in Sid and fucking exploited them.
<v Speaker 3>And if there's one thing we've learned about Sid by
<v Speaker 3>this point in his wrestling career is he's not going
<v Speaker 3>to stick around very long if he doesn't get the
<v Speaker 3>impression that he's not authoring, sort of like the gait,
<v Speaker 3>He's not somebody that can lay claim to drawing the house.
<v Speaker 3>Even if WWF is struggling, so to speak, not so much.
<v Speaker 3>I mean, the ticket sales aren't great, but they're nowhere
<v Speaker 3>near where they were ninety five and into ninety six,
<v Speaker 3>come nineteen ninety seven. But still the television ratings, as
<v Speaker 3>we've documented so many times, including that raw where he
<v Speaker 3>won the title, just so impossibly far away from Nitro
<v Speaker 3>that it just seems like it's a feutal effort. They
<v Speaker 3>might as well just stop trying on Monday nights, and
<v Speaker 3>for Sid, you know, when he looks around and he's
<v Speaker 3>being put in a scenario where he doesn't feel like
<v Speaker 3>he's a single guy that can draw the house and
<v Speaker 3>take credit for the house and call himself a draw,
<v Speaker 3>that means something to him. That's kind of sure to
<v Speaker 3>hear him talk about his career that ended up being
<v Speaker 3>why he was in the business. Of course, it's it's
<v Speaker 3>mostly about money, but for him, like if he's not
<v Speaker 3>able to lay claim to filling a house, then he's
<v Speaker 3>not going to be able to maximize the amount of
<v Speaker 3>money he can make. He's he said, before, you know,
<v Speaker 3>I've been I've been in this business in such a
<v Speaker 3>way where I'm making a lot of money but not
<v Speaker 3>drawing a lot of people, and it just doesn't satisfy me.
<v Speaker 10>Mmm.
<v Speaker 3>It just doesn't give me what I come to really
<v Speaker 3>want out of pro wrestlers, which is really interesting considering
<v Speaker 3>the movie he's about to make, which of course completely
<v Speaker 3>subverts that notion. But it's what I think what he
<v Speaker 3>basically means is when he's been in WWF, he's he's
<v Speaker 3>slotted as somebody that can that can be somebody who
<v Speaker 3>is associated with the main event such that you can say,
<v Speaker 3>you know, Sid made evented this show, so this business
<v Speaker 3>has something to do with him. In WCW. In the
<v Speaker 3>second run too, to a large degree, it was always
<v Speaker 3>so muddled, like.
<v Speaker 4>Was it Sid? Yep?
<v Speaker 3>Sure Sid was in the main event, but the guy
<v Speaker 3>he wrestled had a million other people he was feuding with,
<v Speaker 3>and this match thread through, you know, Sting versus the Horsemen,
<v Speaker 3>whatever the case may be. When you go back to
<v Speaker 3>that Halloween havoc that he that he headlined for the
<v Speaker 3>first time. So it's it's not a surprise. I don't
<v Speaker 3>think that if what they have creatively for Sid is
<v Speaker 3>that he's going to join a Team USA with somebody
<v Speaker 3>else the helm that he's gonna it's gonna get a
<v Speaker 3>bad taste in his mouth about it. Now, what's great
<v Speaker 3>about a tribute show is we picked subjects where, like
<v Speaker 3>you said, there's this nagging curiosity like what the hell
<v Speaker 3>happened to said in nineteen ninety seven he went from
<v Speaker 3>mainaventing WrestleMania to m hmm, completely disappearing. And you know,
<v Speaker 3>unless you do kind of a close examination of what
<v Speaker 3>he said about his career and what was said contemporaneously,
<v Speaker 3>you don't really understand where he went and why he
<v Speaker 3>only popped his head up a couple more times in
<v Speaker 3>nineteen ninety seven. Right, but I think in our next
<v Speaker 3>chapter here in the Sid Tribute, it's time to do that, boss.

<v Speaker 3>It's really wild how he does so little on WWF
<v Speaker 3>television for Russelemnia thirteen too the summer, but how much
<v Speaker 3>actually happens behind the scenes with him.

<v Speaker 3>Sid's getting another opportunistic injury, A cinek might say, you.

<v Speaker 4>know he comes to TV every week whether or not.
<v Speaker 4>No he doesn't. He certainly doesn't. He's not to go
<v Speaker 4>to TV, but he does it on his own. He
<v Speaker 4>feels like, you know, he he he chooses to go.
<v Speaker 3>I will be at the TV that you don't tell
<v Speaker 3>me to be at.
<v Speaker 4>Right, right, Sid, Look, Powet, we don't need you to
<v Speaker 4>be at TV. I'll be there on time, but I
<v Speaker 4>believe it. With bells on, yep. And I just picture him,
<v Speaker 4>you know, I picture him just kind of like coming
<v Speaker 4>in there with with his his roller bag, and he's
<v Speaker 4>wearing jeans like a tucked in a short sleeve you know,
<v Speaker 4>plaid shirt all right, and he's wearing a baseball hat yep.
<v Speaker 4>And he's kind of like walks in like he owns
<v Speaker 4>the fucking place, doesn't talk to anybody, just fucking walks in.
<v Speaker 4>But people are like, what the fuck is I supposed
<v Speaker 4>to be here? Right?
<v Speaker 3>He's not supposed to be here, right, and sid walks
<v Speaker 3>in with the look of somebody that's oblivious to that,
<v Speaker 3>but deep down he's excited to have a fight about it.
<v Speaker 4>Yes, yes, exactly.
<v Speaker 3>It is someone who acts like he wants to avoid arguments,
<v Speaker 3>but he can't survive without getting into a little verbal
<v Speaker 3>tussle with people on the regular. That's his whole strategy, honestly.
<v Speaker 3>You know when when when he feels like his position
<v Speaker 3>on the card isn't going to be one that it's
<v Speaker 3>going to let him take credit for houses and maximize income,
<v Speaker 3>particularly in the WWF you know pay system, where your
<v Speaker 3>position on the card really does impact your your take
<v Speaker 3>home before everyone had the guaranteed deals downsideals, he's looking
<v Speaker 3>at this landscape and he's like, no, Nope. You know,
<v Speaker 3>if I'm not, if I'm taking a step down from
<v Speaker 3>the main event, something's going to go wrong. I'm going
<v Speaker 3>to force an argument. I'm going to force myself to
<v Speaker 3>take exception with something I'm pitched creatively, and I'm gonna
<v Speaker 3>be gone. It goes back to the Crusher quitting every
<v Speaker 3>summer so we can take the take the summer off,
<v Speaker 3>having an argument with verne Gana and over the years you're, Okay,
<v Speaker 3>he's just gonna do this because he wants an excuse
<v Speaker 3>to not have to work the summer. I get it,
<v Speaker 3>and would see it. It was it was injuries and he
<v Speaker 3>always you know. The best thing is like he says,
<v Speaker 3>ask hardcore Hally about the nineteen ninety five neck injury,
<v Speaker 3>and then you read Rli's book and he's like, yeah,
<v Speaker 3>is lying. It's like I asked, I asked him Sid,

<v Speaker 3>Sid thought he had alibis.

<v Speaker 4>shows for me right because I'm Sid.

<v Speaker 3>the the returns in from WrestleMania yet, Yes, the least
<v Speaker 3>bought WrestleMania of all time. I would introduce you to
<v Speaker 3>the WrestleMania you headlined that couldn't even beat w c

<v Speaker 3>Sid was a big draw man. He knew how to draw.
<v Speaker 3>That's one thing you can say about him. No, that's
<v Speaker 3>one thing you can say about him. You can say
<v Speaker 3>a lot of things about the guy, and that's why
<v Speaker 3>you're paying tribute to him, But that's one thing you
<v Speaker 3>cannot say about him, that he was a draw.

<v Speaker 3>But again, there are so many things happening, because if
<v Speaker 3>you recall after WRESTLMINGI thirteen for the April show in

<v Speaker 3>At first it was to be Brett versus Sid at
<v Speaker 3>Revenge of the Taker. No, ladies, and gentlemen, I didn't
<v Speaker 3>know that. Consider a world where Brett comes off the
<v Speaker 3>win over Steve Austin and the famous post match angle
<v Speaker 3>at wrestlming He thirteen, Sid comes off the loss to Undertaker,
<v Speaker 3>and Sid and Brett interfewed. Not Austin and Brett.
<v Speaker 4>Well, I mean, you know, in a weird way, it
<v Speaker 4>would make a little bit of sense. Although you know,
<v Speaker 4>here's the thing. This is the thing about that while
<v Speaker 4>while I don't I can see that as being, yes,
<v Speaker 4>a thing, But what I would what I would think
<v Speaker 4>would happen, is that Brett would face Sid and Austin
<v Speaker 4>would cause Brett to lose in some fashion.
<v Speaker 3>Oh, certainly Austin wouldn't exit the picture. But the idea
<v Speaker 3>of going right back to the match and what that
<v Speaker 3>meant for the trajectory of Brett and Austin in nineteen
<v Speaker 3>ninety seven would have been totally different.
<v Speaker 4>If I mean, maybe, you know, I don't really think
<v Speaker 4>of that match as being a thing that really did
<v Speaker 4>much to their feud. Yeah, that you know the I mean, listen,
<v Speaker 4>I agree like the fact that they had a rubber match,
<v Speaker 4>although it wasn't really rubber match because Austin lost both
<v Speaker 4>but I think.
<v Speaker 3>I'm getting is the reason you don't think of that
<v Speaker 3>as a big landmark part of the feud is because
<v Speaker 3>it wasn't in the plants.
<v Speaker 4>Yeah, yeah, that's true.
<v Speaker 3>It was cobbled together because Sid fell off the card.
<v Speaker 3>They had even promoted it a couple of times on
<v Speaker 3>television that Brett and Sid was going to be a
<v Speaker 3>match on this show. But I just think when we
<v Speaker 3>when we construct the Steve Austin Breheart story from Survivors
<v Speaker 3>series ninety six all the way through ninety seven, Yeah,
<v Speaker 3>this is a this is a part that if you
<v Speaker 3>switched out this match, you'd wonder, like second third order effects,
<v Speaker 3>how that might differently affect the way these two developed.
<v Speaker 3>Because the fact of the matter is after Revenge of
<v Speaker 3>the Taker they had clashed again, Brett and Austin had
<v Speaker 3>gotten their hands on each other again after the blood
<v Speaker 3>bath at WrestleMania, and if that had been delayed two
<v Speaker 3>three four months, you wonder how differently it would have
<v Speaker 3>felt when Austin just kept pouring it on as opposed
<v Speaker 3>to getting back into the ring.
<v Speaker 4>With the man.
<v Speaker 3>But that's another example and a motif that's developing as
<v Speaker 3>we go through Sid's career of a guy who is
<v Speaker 3>sort of like in the background, and his little maneuvers
<v Speaker 3>are having a big impact not on his ability to
<v Speaker 3>draw money, but on the programs that do end up
<v Speaker 3>drawing money, and the wrestlers who do draw money end
<v Speaker 3>up in the positions they ended up in because of
<v Speaker 3>Sid's many decisions and pivots. So it's a rather rich
<v Speaker 3>year of nineteen ninety seven, though just sitting home watching
<v Speaker 3>wrestling television every week, you would not know it as
<v Speaker 3>it regards Sid and the moves he's about to make.
<v Speaker 3>As the Attitude Era is about to begin, and we're
<v Speaker 3>dawning on another holiday season around here, Boss, Am I
<v Speaker 3>wrong about?
<v Speaker 4>The halls are decked, the the atmospheres where it should be.
<v Speaker 4>You know, it's a it's a it's a downer of
<v Speaker 4>a beginning of the season. So it's, uh, you know,
<v Speaker 4>we we need something, We need something to kind of
<v Speaker 4>pick up our pick up our spirits. So we decorated
<v Speaker 4>way early this year, uh, for Christmas, and it's it's
<v Speaker 4>feeling wonderful the way it should be.
<v Speaker 3>And we're coming off the conclusion of the Mighty tlf
<v Speaker 3>X games. Yes, we are as lapsed Vince as most
<v Speaker 3>of the smart money would have predicted on the front end,
<v Speaker 3>but you know, subjected to a fair, open and empirical vote.
<v Speaker 4>I do wonder. I do wonder this. I do wonder
<v Speaker 4>if Hogan, if Hogan had been on the other the
<v Speaker 4>other side, Yep, I think that would have been a
<v Speaker 4>very very that would have been a closer, because I'm
<v Speaker 4>pretty sure if if you did have Hogan and Vince
<v Speaker 4>on opposite sides, it would have been kind of easy
<v Speaker 4>money that that's going to be the main event.
<v Speaker 3>I think it's going to be the main event. But
<v Speaker 3>let's not forget the people had their chance to vote
<v Speaker 3>on Vince versus Hogan and it wasn't even close.
<v Speaker 4>No, I know, but I think when it comes to

<v Speaker 3>I think Vince crushes him by the same margin if
<v Speaker 3>no kidding.

<v Speaker 3>of course was serving in the executive capacity at the
<v Speaker 3>time and certainly was was no fan of Sid's prior
<v Speaker 3>behavior and business dealings, had the unfortunate and unenviable task
<v Speaker 3>of trying to corral Sid for not only in appearance

<v Speaker 4>said where Sid. Oh. He came up to me.
<v Speaker 6>He said he felt like he was having a heart attack.

<v Speaker 6>him back to the hotel? What the holiday inn?

<v Speaker 3>that with Sid missing as he's due to make an
<v Speaker 3>appearance on the flagship television show, that Bruno is the
<v Speaker 3>only person in the building who knows about this heart
<v Speaker 3>attack or this field or suspected heart attack. And over
<v Speaker 3>in WCW is oh, no, that had already happened. I

<v Speaker 3>Michael's a special ref one, the Owen Hart versus Steve
<v Speaker 3>Boston neck break match. All that I was supposed to
<v Speaker 3>feature Sid versus Vader.
<v Speaker 4>How about that? That that's fascinating. No one have been interesting.

<v Speaker 3>there used to be this long form thread called like
<v Speaker 3>the sleeze or something. It was like a huge document
<v Speaker 3>full of all these like one line or things that
<v Speaker 3>people whisper about the other wrestlers, okay, and the sick
<v Speaker 3>things they've done or or might do or will do.
<v Speaker 3>And this may have been from that anonymously sourced famous
<v Speaker 3>forum post with all these things, this may have been
<v Speaker 3>something someone said about Sid as far as I could tell.
<v Speaker 3>But if anybody knows kind of who the first person
<v Speaker 3>was to suggest or tell the story that Sid had this,
<v Speaker 3>squirrel love to run that down but could not do so.
<v Speaker 3>But I have the feeling that it comes from this
<v Speaker 3>rough time period in the WWF as far as when
<v Speaker 3>it happened. So I'm putting it here. And the call
<v Speaker 3>is out of the Solar system, you know, the email

<v Speaker 3>us as you are, I feel confident that the Solar

<v Speaker 3>which was an interesting choice. Think about Sid shooting on
<v Speaker 3>WWF in March of nineteen ninety eight. That's wild, that's
<v Speaker 3>a risk, but he's doing it. And so they asked
<v Speaker 3>him what his status is with with the WWEF contract
<v Speaker 3>and he says, legally, I do have a release, and
<v Speaker 3>then legally I don't have a release, and that's a
<v Speaker 3>Sid answers you're going to get, he said. What we're
<v Speaker 3>trying to do is just get the final details of
<v Speaker 3>the merchandising worked out. How many months or how many
<v Speaker 3>years they're going to owe me for what's usually a
<v Speaker 3>general timeframe is two years of what they pay you
<v Speaker 3>after you leave. So that's what we're trying to get
<v Speaker 3>them to say. So basically, it appears that as of
<v Speaker 3>March of nineteen ninety eight, you know, es wrestle Mania
<v Speaker 3>fourteen's getting ready to go, Sid is negotiating how much
<v Speaker 3>pay he's going to get for merchandising in exchange for
<v Speaker 3>leaving the company. Sid also said in this interview that
<v Speaker 3>they won't return my lawyer's calls and he's been calling,
<v Speaker 3>and you know, only just the thing was I told
<v Speaker 3>them I'm in no hurry because of my neck. But
<v Speaker 3>now I'm in a little bit of a hurry. But
<v Speaker 3>as far as legally, I can go work anywhere I want.
<v Speaker 3>So basically he's it sounds like he's saying that, yeah,
<v Speaker 3>my contract is expired or my contract you know, is
<v Speaker 3>null and void at this point, but I'm looking to
<v Speaker 3>get more money out of them on a merchandising deal point.
<v Speaker 3>And so if they're going to give me that money,
<v Speaker 3>I'm gonna have to negotiate giving them something in return.
<v Speaker 3>So in that respect, if they give there, I'm still
<v Speaker 3>kind of in contractual limbo and not able to go
<v Speaker 3>wherever I want. So only Sid can have a can
<v Speaker 3>be in a contractual position at any given point in
<v Speaker 3>time where his contract is and is not pending and valid.
<v Speaker 3>But of course, now where did Sid go in nineteen
<v Speaker 3>ninety eight? We certainly don't know, do we.

<v Speaker 3>back to Memphis and at the time, it had been
<v Speaker 3>transitioned into a promotion called Memphis Power Pro Wrestling or
<v Speaker 3>MPPW under Randy Hales, who would go on to be
<v Speaker 3>heavily associated with promoting at wrestling in that great city
<v Speaker 3>for for years after Jerry Lawler and Jerry Jarrett kind
<v Speaker 3>of set down the reins for that territory. So Memphis
<v Speaker 3>Power Pro still run and they're still doing WMC Channel
<v Speaker 3>five Studio wrestling. I don't think they're running the Mid
<v Speaker 3>South Coliseum anymore, but they are doing a live event
<v Speaker 3>business as well. This is kind of boss the successor
<v Speaker 3>to the us w A. Okay, Yeah, which we know
<v Speaker 3>kind of bubbled up after the Memphis territory as we
<v Speaker 3>knew it fractured as Lawler went to w w F
<v Speaker 3>and it just became kind of like this feeder system thing.
<v Speaker 4>Was that also part of wasn't that wasn't it was
<v Speaker 4>a w A.
<v Speaker 3>Yeah, that was wasn't a world class part of that too,
<v Speaker 3>part of the us w A sort of, Yeah, it
<v Speaker 3>kind of becomes the us w A. This is after
<v Speaker 3>Jerry Jarrett buys out Fritz's interest in Dallas. They were
<v Speaker 3>called c w c w A and then yeah, basically
<v Speaker 3>the combined organizationrunning out of the Sportatorium was was called
<v Speaker 3>USWA for a time, and then Global moved in to
<v Speaker 3>the sport He drove Price reigned and Rod Price reigned.
<v Speaker 3>That's correct, due to inflation, no doubt. And so Memphis
<v Speaker 3>Pro is not only you know, running under new auspices,
<v Speaker 3>it's also kind of at the catbird seat for a
<v Speaker 3>developmental territory deal. And this would be the promotion that
<v Speaker 3>Kurt Angle, for instance, would get a lot of his
<v Speaker 3>reps in before coming over to the main ww roster
<v Speaker 3>in November of nineteen ninety nine, and they would run
<v Speaker 3>a lot of their prospects through the Memphis Power Pro organization.
<v Speaker 3>I don't think that he's exactly taken hold yet when
<v Speaker 3>Sid went over there, but we remember, you know, Sid
<v Speaker 3>went to Memphis after the second WCW run before they
<v Speaker 3>brought him back in ninety five to be Psycho Sid
<v Speaker 3>to the WWF. Oh yeah, so I'm sure he's seeing
<v Speaker 3>this not only as a bit of ho homecoming, but
<v Speaker 3>also a way to stay on their radar and prove
<v Speaker 3>that despite all the bullshit, he's actually employable. And this
<v Speaker 3>is how he looks on television and This is how
<v Speaker 3>he's carrying himself and he's not too hurt, not too hobbled,
<v Speaker 3>et cetera, and still trying. This is just a wild
<v Speaker 3>and weird time for Sid starting in February ninety eight
<v Speaker 3>where he starts showing up on shows and Mississippi, teaming
<v Speaker 3>with Jerry Lawler against the likes of Reggie b Fine
<v Speaker 3>and Johnny Rotten. Johnny Rotten was Sid's buddy that he'd
<v Speaker 3>take everywhere and get bookings.
<v Speaker 4>So love not everyone's got like their little buddy that

<v Speaker 3>place for twenty eighth, nineteen ninety eight at the Radison
<v Speaker 3>Hotel in Philadelphia. As you know, we start to see,
<v Speaker 3>you know, the Philly area indies start to pick up
<v Speaker 3>again with ec W being hot. Sid goes over there
<v Speaker 3>and beats King Kong Bundy at the Radison in Philly,
<v Speaker 3>that's something to consider Sid versus King Kung Bundy in
<v Speaker 3>nineteen ninety eight.

<v Speaker 3>March teaming with Lawler again, wrestling Johnny Rotten and wrestling
<v Speaker 3>King Kong Bundy on a New England Wrestling show in Thomaston,
<v Speaker 3>Connecticut on March twenty eighth, nineteen ninety eight. So when
<v Speaker 3>we're getting ready to go to the Fleet Center for
<v Speaker 3>wrestling at fourteen the week before Sid's wrestling Bundy in Connecticut.

<v Speaker 3>I just can't. I can't incorporate Sid being on this
<v Speaker 3>track to my mindset at that time in ninety eight.
<v Speaker 3>I know, I never even thought about SidD. You did

<v Speaker 3>was it was pretty wild, the kind of you know,
<v Speaker 3>six figure deals that Paul Hayman was willing to ink
<v Speaker 3>at this time without a whole hell of a lot
<v Speaker 3>to show for it from a revenue standpoint, although you know,
<v Speaker 3>in nineteen ninety eight, ninety nine, early ninety nine at
<v Speaker 3>least there was reason for optimism that as they settled
<v Speaker 3>in on pay per view and really hit their stride
<v Speaker 3>and cleared in more systems, that significant revenue was going
<v Speaker 3>to start coming in from these shows and that it
<v Speaker 3>would lead to more ticket sales and merchandise, and they
<v Speaker 3>were getting licensing and things like that. So but come on,
<v Speaker 3>there are reasons to think that problem start affording these contracts.
<v Speaker 3>But the contract at the level that SID is expecting
<v Speaker 3>is just asking for trouble. And so it's probably just
<v Speaker 3>as well that he just positioned as this killer that
<v Speaker 3>came in and took people out and not somebody that
<v Speaker 3>was actually a pushed singles wrestler. Though we did have
<v Speaker 3>a handful of formal matches, it wasn't all just run
<v Speaker 3>in some and power bombs like that. But that was
<v Speaker 3>night one for SID there at Guilty is charged. And
<v Speaker 3>you know, it makes some sense because Paul Hayman was
<v Speaker 3>known to SID back from the Continental days of course
<v Speaker 3>Territory where he first linked up with Bruno Lauer Downtown,
<v Speaker 3>Bruno's manager as Lord Humongus. Paul Hayman was also there
<v Speaker 3>at the time, cutting his teeth as a manager, and
<v Speaker 3>of course followed Eddie Gilbert who was the booker in
<v Speaker 3>Continental to WCW where he became poly dangerously and following
<v Speaker 3>shortly behind was in fact Sid, who, as we've talked
<v Speaker 3>about earlier in our Sid tribute, really had the door
<v Speaker 3>open to him to World Championship Wrestling by virtue of
<v Speaker 3>Eddie Gilbert coming and working on the booking commute such
<v Speaker 3>as it was. So it makes some sense that, you know,
<v Speaker 3>Hayman would have Sid's ear in a way that maybe
<v Speaker 3>other indie promoters at the time in nineteen ninety eight
<v Speaker 3>and nineteen ninety nine wouldn't It also accounts for why
<v Speaker 3>he was able to bring in Dusty Rhodes a year later,
<v Speaker 3>as we talked about recently where we looked at his
<v Speaker 3>feud and match with Steve Carino, and so Sid is
<v Speaker 3>an ECW, and I just remember it being such a
<v Speaker 3>mind fuck because I don't know, you kind of put
<v Speaker 3>ECW in a certain category of you know, they're gonna
<v Speaker 3>make do with this ragtag group of guys that for
<v Speaker 3>the most part got over under their roof, right, and
<v Speaker 3>so you told yourself are doing it kind of at
<v Speaker 3>a cut rate to try to ride this revolution as
<v Speaker 3>far as it's going to go, and these aren't This
<v Speaker 3>isn't necessarily the most transactional locker room. With WWF and
<v Speaker 3>WCW breathing down their next trying to sign guys, it
<v Speaker 3>seemed like as they hit their own stride on pay
<v Speaker 3>per view that now MAYBECW could afford to keep some
<v Speaker 3>guys around, but not necessarily afford somebody like Sid, and
<v Speaker 3>that was one of the prevailing things. I remember when
<v Speaker 3>Sid came into ECW, it was just like, whoa like,
<v Speaker 3>did they have a lot more money than I realized?

<v Speaker 3>time of how much Sid was making, but didn't take
<v Speaker 3>a lot to deduce that he was one of the
<v Speaker 3>better paid wrestlers in the business at the time. So

<v Speaker 4>Really it's kind of insane, like it, I mean, it's
<v Speaker 4>it is a trip. And it's also you know, he's
<v Speaker 4>just too much, you know when you when you look

<v Speaker 3>you know, he's deemed us worthy.

<v Speaker 3>What was was the prevailing feeling and the way they
<v Speaker 3>popped for Sid and the way the way they want

<v Speaker 3>great match, No, no, absolutely not. He worked harder than
<v Speaker 3>I think his reputation proceeded, but still not a good
<v Speaker 3>fit for the style de jure and ECW. But the

<v Speaker 3>similar thing with nine one one, where he choke slammed

<v Speaker 3>who you know Sid had an opinion about because he'd

<v Speaker 24>one hundred dollars a week, I can't remember what it was,
<v Speaker 24>and if I worked over two days or whatever like

<v Speaker 24>I was willing to work as many days as possible,
<v Speaker 24>and then he would call me and say, hey, what
<v Speaker 24>about this weekend. Well, this weekend, Morty booked me and
<v Speaker 24>he'd already advertised me for some of those towns. But
<v Speaker 24>I can't remember now, but outside of New York of it,
<v Speaker 24>and then people started wrapped giving me a wrap of
<v Speaker 24>doing the Nose Show, which I oh my god, I
<v Speaker 24>did know I was advertised because I know when I
<v Speaker 24>was advertised, I would have made the show because we
<v Speaker 24>were also trying to work to do. If he could
<v Speaker 24>have paid me, to say, up to two hundred and
<v Speaker 24>fifty thousand dollars a year, then I was going to.
<v Speaker 14>Be a permanent figure.
<v Speaker 24>Okay, you know, so that you know he was trying
<v Speaker 24>to talk me into that, which I was trying to
<v Speaker 24>talk us about it, you know, because I was always
<v Speaker 24>I was looking to go to one of two big
<v Speaker 24>companies at the time.
<v Speaker 3>That's crazy that they were really trying to make a
<v Speaker 3>play for Sid like that. Yeah, I don't really believe it,

<v Speaker 3>a circumstance where Sid finds himself in a place that
<v Speaker 3>someone's advertising him for a show that he knows he
<v Speaker 3>can't make, and the promoter knows he can't make, and

<v Speaker 3>that yeah, this is something he would do. But according
<v Speaker 3>to Sid Paul was advertising him for shows he was
<v Speaker 3>never even on. And again all they did was ask
<v Speaker 3>him how the CID how the ECW thing came together,
<v Speaker 3>And pretty soon he's meandering into this whole excuse series
<v Speaker 3>about oh, of course for everything, and he's going to
<v Speaker 3>it's going to find its way into the conversation even
<v Speaker 3>if he's not asked directly, because that's his his pre
<v Speaker 3>eminent memory about every little chapter of his career is
<v Speaker 3>you know, a moment where he did, arguably at least
<v Speaker 3>to me, uh, pulled a power play and uh and
<v Speaker 3>it had hurt him in the eyes of the fans

<v Speaker 3>talked about guys being really nice to him in the
<v Speaker 3>ECW locker room, calling out Saboo and Rob Van Dam
<v Speaker 3>in particular and RVD what's pretty complimentary reflecting on Sid
<v Speaker 3>after his passing on his podcast and such. So he's
<v Speaker 3>doing an indie show and then he does a Queen's
<v Speaker 3>ECW taping and or at least he shows up, I
<v Speaker 3>should say, at a Queen's ECW taping because he's owed money.
<v Speaker 3>He's owed money and he's not happy that.
<v Speaker 4>Paul you know, come on exactly then nothing. You know,
<v Speaker 4>if he's owed money, he's going to cause a stink.
<v Speaker 3>And that Paulie is telling people he's going to be
<v Speaker 3>at a show that he isn't going to be at,

<v Speaker 3>happening to the guy, and he gets his reputation as
<v Speaker 3>a no show. So he shows up with a Tommy
<v Speaker 3>Rodgers who's a longtime veteran of the business and also
<v Speaker 3>was with ECW at the time and apparently had made
<v Speaker 3>an alliance with SID because he also had concerns about
<v Speaker 3>money and ECW was so many others would go on
<v Speaker 3>to have and you know, Sid, I just want to
<v Speaker 3>be clear, boss, when he shows up unannounced or uninvited
<v Speaker 3>to this Queen's ECW after this bit of curflow, he
<v Speaker 3>is definitely not crying to strong arm Paul Hayman.
<v Speaker 24>Okay, well, I showed up and Paul is freaking you know,
<v Speaker 24>because I was with Tommy Rodgers's the time. Rogers was
<v Speaker 24>owed some money as well. Of course Tommy forced him
<v Speaker 24>to give him cash. I said, Paul, you send me
<v Speaker 24>another check. You know, I know, you know you're You've
<v Speaker 24>been good to me. I'm not here to worry about
<v Speaker 24>my money. I'm just here dropping and saying what's going on?
<v Speaker 24>Why haven't you called me? You know, things like why
<v Speaker 24>are you I'm getting the wrap of not doing those
<v Speaker 24>shows and you haven't told me that I was booked
<v Speaker 24>on any of these shows. And he was so paranoid.

<v Speaker 3>losing Shane Douglas. ECW then moved to Detroit on May
<v Speaker 3>twenty second of nineteen ninety nine at the Michigan State Fairgrounds,
<v Speaker 3>where yes, you heard this right, Rod Price goes to
<v Speaker 3>a note contest with Sid. Wow in ECW, that's the
<v Speaker 3>main event anywhere in the country, that's the main event
<v Speaker 3>everyone needs. So here's Sid on his sojourn to ECW
<v Speaker 3>what it meant to him in retrospect, because that's the
<v Speaker 3>extent of it. We just read off everything that pretty
<v Speaker 3>much happened. Seemed like there was an awful lot more
<v Speaker 3>on the table that didn't actually ever take place. Wow,
<v Speaker 3>I'm sure after that a surprise meeting in Queen's there
<v Speaker 3>wasn't much left to the relationship between Sid and ECW,
<v Speaker 3>but he made a couple of impactful pay per view
<v Speaker 3>appearances that there were a lot of eyeballs on that
<v Speaker 3>we just played for you. Yeah, and so it's remembered
<v Speaker 3>rather vividly by an ECW fan base that was kind
<v Speaker 3>of blown away when a guy of his statue stature
<v Speaker 3>would park those those curtains here, sit down to shoot interview.
<v Speaker 3>Looking back on ECW and that short run and what
<v Speaker 3>it portended for the next move in his wrestling career.
<v Speaker 17>Well, the thing was is this, you know, I'm looking
<v Speaker 17>for a platform ore is to you know, preach off
<v Speaker 17>of and that was a perfect platform to let the
<v Speaker 17>world see me in a small scale. Uh, somewhat a

<v Speaker 17>gimmick Lordian Mongers started with Pauli just for a huge

<v Speaker 17>go to. I still believe that, I, you know, was
<v Speaker 17>there that that place that really had a chance to
<v Speaker 17>do something. But once I got there a little bit
<v Speaker 17>and saw how things were going there that I realized
<v Speaker 17>it did never make it big because they were too intent,
<v Speaker 17>too too badly wanted to have the company always larger
<v Speaker 17>than the boys. You know, they really have fans channing
<v Speaker 17>c W then say you know whoever you know, so
<v Speaker 17>you know it's like and then it's just, you know,
<v Speaker 17>I don't know. These guys were all nice to me.
<v Speaker 17>I don't have word argument. Guy out of the place, right.
<v Speaker 17>So but when you're pushing your top guys, it's taz
<v Speaker 17>and he can't make in the WWS because he's too short.
<v Speaker 17>That tells you that you know your hair cutting yourself.
<v Speaker 17>You know, if he had a lot of office business,

<v Speaker 3>Eric came across boss with the deal wow of a lifetime,
<v Speaker 3>and it was to hear Sid say it in no
<v Speaker 3>small part because he found himself back on television. We
<v Speaker 3>know u Bischoff never shied away from recruiting his next
<v Speaker 3>big act from ECW. It seemed to be a key
<v Speaker 3>part of his playbook and Sid crossing his plane of consciousness.
<v Speaker 3>But you know, there's there wasn't the greatest ending to
<v Speaker 3>Sid in Atlanta the last time he was there.
<v Speaker 4>That's true.
<v Speaker 3>A lot of issues, a lot of problems, a lot
<v Speaker 3>of considerations. But you know what if Sid is not
<v Speaker 3>getting the contract he's he's liking from Paul Hayman and
<v Speaker 3>he's not liking what he's seeing the waycw's framed up,
<v Speaker 3>I'm sure he went after Taz in that interview for
<v Speaker 3>one specific reason, because Taz was making more than he was.
<v Speaker 3>Tat A signed Taz to a big I think to
<v Speaker 3>fifty I'm not exactly sure, but they signed him to
<v Speaker 3>a big money deal to try to keep him, and
<v Speaker 3>of course by the end of ninety nine he's making
<v Speaker 3>the jump. So I'm sure in Sid's mind that's that's
<v Speaker 3>the dollar for you, right, he would want to stay,
<v Speaker 3>and the fact that they gave it to somebody else
<v Speaker 3>that couldn't make it in WWF is something he kept
<v Speaker 3>very close attention to, kept a very close score on.
<v Speaker 3>That's that's how sid rolled and so calling him out there.
<v Speaker 3>But now he's back on the national stage to some degree,
<v Speaker 3>and people are seeing what he has to bring to
<v Speaker 3>the table. And Boss, I don't know. I mean, if
<v Speaker 3>we know Eric Bischoff, i'd say it's time to to

<v Speaker 16>I kind of admire someone, especially at a young age,
<v Speaker 16>especially when people are dangling buckets and buckets and buckets
<v Speaker 16>and money in front of you. When you're a small
<v Speaker 16>town guy from Mississippi, who's you know, happy driver a
<v Speaker 16>twenty year old car. As long as it works, that
<v Speaker 16>was it. He wasn't. He didn't live above his means.
<v Speaker 16>Money was I guess important to him. But it's clear
<v Speaker 16>to me now, especially in retrospect, as you just pointed out,
<v Speaker 16>his life, his family, his community was far more important
<v Speaker 16>than perhaps another opportunity to wrestle in a WrestleMania main
<v Speaker 16>event or WCW main event. He had his priorities straight.
<v Speaker 16>They're pretty uncommon in this business, and I understand that.
<v Speaker 16>You know, it's hard for people to wrap their head
<v Speaker 16>around the idea that someone like sid would jeopardize hundreds
<v Speaker 16>of thousands of dollars because being with his family and
<v Speaker 16>being in this community and be a part of it
<v Speaker 16>was actually more important to him.
<v Speaker 14>I admire that.
<v Speaker 3>Well, that sounds like he's found a way to get
<v Speaker 3>over the stabbing.
<v Speaker 4>Okay, yeah, I guess so, I guess it's fine to

<v Speaker 3>these kind of false starts in his mind, finally, yes,

<v Speaker 26>So Eric Bischoff lies a private plane. I pick him
<v Speaker 26>up at the West Memphis Airport. We go to Cracker
<v Speaker 26>Burrow and we sit there and make it deal with
<v Speaker 26>Cracker Barrow. All right, you know, he says, he goes,
<v Speaker 26>We're going to start you out at one point six, right,
<v Speaker 26>that's exactly what I was making province for four years, right, Okay,
<v Speaker 26>so I'm figuring he already knew that. I'm sitting there,
<v Speaker 26>I'm looking at him. Okay, you know this evidently, right,
<v Speaker 26>But I didn't say anything. Then he goes, but he said,
<v Speaker 26>I mean one point six year first year said I, Oh,
