Yo, don't be bad. It's the Internet. You're busy. Let's do
this for October thirtieth, twenty twenty three. For the next hour or so,
let me help you sort through the world of gaming on Game mess Mornings
Live with Me Jeff Grubb. Today, Nintendo has a surprising new patent that
has people speculating about the switch to But first, please join me and welcome
me today's co host the Game Mess Mornings. It's Evan Campbell. Everybody.
Evan, how are you doing? Yo? I'm doing pretty good. Actually
I got sick. I'm like right after You're like, hey, come on
the show, and I was like, I'll be fine by Monday. Coach
the soccer game on Saturday. I'm like, I'll be better. I can
do this. So I apologize everybody. I'm sorry. What's up? Giant
bomb, what's up? Game mess Chat? I'm excited to be here.
You're gonna do awesome like that because the voice. All you gotta do is
just you whisper those sweet video game nothings to me and I'll do the I'll
do all the yelling for you. Screen exactly. Screen. Oh my god,
Evan, where my people have seen your work? What do you have
going on right now? Tell people about yourself. Oh, man, I've
been doing really good lately, honestly, because I got laid off in August.
I was at Rooster Teeth and I've just been taking a huge break.
So I was running the Inside Gaming channel for like I don't know, on
my own for at least a year. We started as ten in like twenty
nineteen, right there was a shuttering, then there was three, then a
year later there was two, and then there was just me for a little
while. Then they added more people to Inside Gaming, and then I got
laid off well, and then they offered me part time and I was like,
nah, I hit me out of here. So I was doing a
weekend news show called The Weekend Roundup, which was originally written by Brian gar
when he got laid off. Then I had to write it, and then
I was doing like videos in between. So if you want to see my
old work, you can go there. I've been in an industry for a
long time. It started at GameTrailers dot com way back when, and then
like when I got laid off, a bunch of people just went to my
personal YouTube channel. I'd like three hundred people is that much, But it's
more than I thought. And so, like I've I've been slowly starting to
build up, you know, things behind the scenes to start producing content over
there. So like this week, I'm going to do a video on Silo
and the Fallout show that got announced last week. But it's just been slow
going. So I've been at home with kids and just you know, yeah,
absolutely, what is it when you look about, hey, I'm going
to start making content on my own or start getting stuff working and making videos,
how do you decide like what you're going to tackle Because I mean,
you know, you see YouTube people have a lot of success in niching down
like hey, really focusing on stuff, but I have I'm like, I
want to do so many different things. I have a hard time with that.
Did do you have a difficult time with that? Yeah, there's definitely
a split between like, hey, this is what works on YouTube and this
is what the algorithm will promote. I get to learn a lot about that
because Inside Gaming has over a million subscribers, I think it's only about like
one hundred thousand active. Honestly, though, those numbers like that don't make
sense anymore. YouTube YouTube doesn't make sense anymore. Yeah, So yeah,
there's definitely a divide between like I want to interview developers. I want to
go to their studio and talk to them and put faces and names and things
like that. But like anytime I've done an interview at Inside Gaming, it
usually performs low. Right, Like we're in our heyday getting like one hundred
thousand views on average. You do an interview and it gets thirty thousand,
It's like, oh, well that's you know, you're not going to be
able to get people to sell that, like even at your own company or
whatever, so you got to pick it. But when you're doing it for
yourself, it's like you just do it for the love, I guess,
And so like I've been thinking a lot about that, but I've also been
thinking about like how to grow YouTube. You need consistent content, like a
certain length and that sort of thing. So I'm trying to like plug in
all the holes but then also make room for me to be able to like
do interesting and cool stuff, which I'm hoping. But you know, I've
been without a computer for a little bit. I was waiting for the Apple
M three's oh you're getting get announced, And now today we're going to see
what the details are, and then I'll probably pick up one of those bad
boys if I don't know if it's happened yet, but I'm going to check
after the show. Yeah. I got my my wife MacBook air in one
when I first got announced, and I'm like, what have I got you?
The one of the new M three ones, and I take that one.
So I have a computer that has a battery that actually lasts. That
would be nice. So I'm in the same boat, Evan. I'm really
glad you're hanging out with me today. I appreciate it. Let's uh,
let's explain what we do here most weekdays. I, Jeff Greb will help
piece your gaming life back together. That includes breaking news and maybe even some
of our own original reporting. For all these topics, I'll get the input
of a bona fide expert who will make me look smart. If you are
watching live on twitch welcome. You can always listen to the show later on
podcast feeds by search you for game as Mornings, or find therss on giant
bomb dot com. You can also catch the show later with chapters and timestamps
on YouTube. Hello YouTube. All right, we have a lot to get
into, so Let's start the morning mess with Nintendo patents dual screen gaming device
that can be split in half. This comes from Bobby Anhalt at Game Rant.
Nintendo's Nintendo recently filed a patent for a dual screen detachable device, with
the Switch to being Nintendo's worst kept secret, every patent leak that emerges raises
an eyebrow from fans who are eager to get a first look at the next
generation. Report of the Switch's success or appearing appearing at games Com behind closed
door doors have fueled the discussion and speculation online as to what the next Nintendo
console might be and when it might be released. The Switch is enjoyed more
than six years of being one of Nintendo's most successful pieces of hardware ever.
With eyes on this latest patent, speculation is brewing as to what exactly the
strange new device could be and how and how it fits into Nintendo's future hardware
plans. Should be noted that many Nintendo patents never become consumer products, but
obviously some do as well. This this patent EVAN shows something that looks a
lot like a DS or a three DS, except for has a screen on
the outside and then it also splits apart. Just let's operate under the assumption
that this could be the switch too. We'll have a discussion about like the
reality or the possibility of that actually coming to fruition. But is this something
that is that sounds exciting to you? This? Does this sound like a
Nintendo follow up to the switch for a switch to? What do you think?
I love this? I love it. It sounds very Nintendo in a
way. That's like how they how would they possibly pull this pull this off?
I love it a lot. But I don't know that this pattern comes
excuse me, not a perfect time where we're just we're getting hyper switch to
we know, probably first half of next year, maybe March, uh and
there. So like hearing rumors about the patterns is similar to me when we
heard rumors or that saw the pattern for Gyros when the we right was about
to come out. So it's like, yeah, this really could be this
could be the thing, and this would be the way to really like I
didn't think of this. I didn't think they would have. Like what gets
me is the when it's closed. The screen on the top is also a
touch screen, right, which is super fascinating. Right here on this video.
Yes, there it is. Yeah, yeah, and then you can
imagine doing like what if they brought like street pass back and you don't even
have to open that thing up to like you know, paying other people or
whatever walking bay. Who knows, but it does seem really really cool and
really, Nintendo, is it legitimate? I mean, could that be it?
Like they said in an article, you know a lot of these pounds
get filed and then you never come to fruition. But yeah, that part
kind of hangs me up too. It's like, yeah, maybe this could
be it. But but if we're going straight from switch to switch to and
the rumors so far have been it's not going to be that different. You
know, it's going to be upgraded processor and that sort of thing, So
this wouldn't line up with any of that. And maybe like another generation down
the line. You know, some of these patns they go through and they
just hold onto the ears and then they come out you know, a decade
later or whatever. Yeah. So I'm like right there with you in terms
of being excited about this or thinking this is a good idea. Yeah,
I think this could totally work. I think creating a way for Nintendo to
bring back a lot of those dual screen games that it did have and make
that work with you know, the three D SDS some we you know,
we use stuff a little bit. I think that would be great. And
I think this is a pretty good gimmick, especially since you know, you
know that you can still all of the single screen games on this device,
and then you get all those dul screen games in there as well. And
also I think Nintendo could do some fun stuff if it's like, oh,
what if a home version of the three DS sold like really really well,
Like what ideas would people come up with? I don't know, I think
it could be pretty promising. But this so this this filing, the Nintendo
submitted it in November eleventh, twenty twenty two, so about you know,
a little bit a little bit more than a year ago, or not a
little bit less than a year ago, excuse me. So it feels and
maybe maybe this is something to do with the switch to It feels like,
I don't know, that's kind of soon. They probably would have had stuff
pretty settled by then, you know. At the same time, it's not
so out of the timeline that it's impossible. Maybe they had been working on
it and that's just when they finally got around to patenting the idea. But
I think the more likely saluted answer here is that this is just Nintendo pattenting
its idea to keep it safe. Like you said, I think that's a
process that just happens naturally. This companies. They have research and development partner
departments, and then they have legal departments that all, right, we have
this stuff, the work is done. Now we are going to patent it,
because that's literally our job is to see what we're working on and get
it patented. This is probably not going to be the switch too. If
it is, I'll be very happy and excited, but I don't want get
people's hopes up. I don't know, what do you think? Yeah,
yeah, I'm inclined to lean that way. This feels like someone that Nintendo
is, like, you know, DS three DS the best selling handheld you
know, one of the best of selling of all time, Like, how
do we regain access to those re releases and make money on that stuff,
whether it's through a subscription or if you're getting people to pay for that stuff
again, Like that's just money on the table, right, So Nintendo probably
has a department like, hey, what does this look like if we were
to try and imagine a world where we have a new device that complating new
games, but also give people access to that old library so we can charge
them like the Oneman has to make Nintendo's ability to make money. I think
this feels kind of like what that could be if this is switched too,
though, like you said, like my mind will be blow yep, for
sure, you can imagine what the like the first video of them announcing it,
and it's like it soone's holding it like a like a switch, and
it probably looks pretty sleek because this is their Uh they're probably still revising the
switch design. But now they have this thing. Oh you pop it open
and now look at dual screens and oh my god, that it can transform
that much. Uh. This patent does also mention the fact that it can
split apart, so it might feel like it might continue that the joycon idea
of like oh, sharing the fund, someone's sitting next to you, hand
them a joy con. Well, now, no, you hand them an
entire screen. I suppose that is what? Does it have its own processing?
Doesn't know that? Is that that? Then? No, it's like
beaming the video wirelessly from the thing right next to it, kind of like
the we you uh I Again, I could see that being the case.
I could also see that being a very very much a nightmare for trying to
sell devices to children who will definitely lose one half of this thing almost certainly.
But that's also promising for like, oh you can then, yes,
when it's handheld, it's two devices yet, you know, spread apart,
and then there's two things happening on each screen. But when you're just one
person playing on the TV, well, the thing you're holding is probably going
to be this device, and then the video gets being wirelessly to the TEF
some somehow through a dongle or something like that, and then you can have
a TV dual screen device. So yeah, I was watching the Nintendo Prime
video yesterday or I forget. It's like another rumor guy who was saying like
they're pretty certain there's still going to be a DOC. So I can imagine
what that screen on the back of you there's just doc and it's like Mario's
face. Yeah, that's really good. I think something clever. For me,
the idea of detachable screen is actually seems a little bit better than the
joy con situation because you can then have a lot more room for like ergonomics
and stuff. Make a company controller and then remove that screen hes they make
like bigger screens and stuff like I don't know for I also kidding, but
just get an excited thinking applications where it's like, oh, you remember when
Google had the like really easy like VR stuff like you you just slide that
thing into like a cardboard mode bo and Google Cardboard. Yeah, just really
creative ideas there. I kind of almost wish for like thumb scenarios, like
a switch pro would be more of a tablet form factor. Then you could
just bring your like your switch pro controller in a case or something and then
have that bigger screen that's like takes up bus from it a lot. Like
something like that be cool. But that's like this definitely seems kind of still
in that pocket device kind of realm. And yeah, and I think a
lot of people are waiting for their favorite three DS games to come back,
So yeah, I mean, listen, we get a link between worlds,
I'll be thrilled for sure. Yeah. I think that there's a lot of
promise here, but I do wonder where this actually manifests. This could be
the kind of thing where it's actually what we're doing here is we're patenting a
fun like toy that we're going to use to do like a three DS or
a DS Mini and then it has like some fun extras in there and it
spreads like it splits apart and could do all these other fun things. So
yeah, we'll see, uh, we'll see how it actually comes together or
it becomes a product at all. What's that I said? Either way,
I'm going to buy it right exactly. Oh yeah, buy it or suckers,
it's it's game over. Yeah yeah jmih Christmas Eve reminds me that there's
a patent of like the weu being able to put like a bunch of WU
tablets side by side and then like the video display like continues like it knows
where the other one is and like so you can draw like a map from
one to the other. Yeah, so they have like this idea of wireless
connected displays, but we'll see it just seems maybe a bit too much for
what they would want to do with the switch to So yeah, like you
said, maybe down the line, we'll see ye all right. Next story
here a new Nintendo Switch O lead bundle is about to be released in This
is probably the last one before the new Switch. This is from Bill bil
Kuhn, who is a pretty prolific leaker. We're getting close to the holiday
season and Nintendo is obviously keeping keeps releasing new bundles on this occasion, and
many of these packs have just been launched for this month of October alone.
Among them, we have seen the Nintendo Switched Sports Bundle, which is released
in October twentieth, or did release October twentieth. The Nintendo Switch Light Animal
Crossing New Horizons Edition Bundle, which is in two variants. There's like a
pink one and I think a blue one, and that Alswitch came out October
twentieth. I think that looks really good, by the way. And the
Mario Kart eight Deluxe Switch Bundle released in North America on October sixth. But
there's going to be another Mario cart eight Deluxe Bundle, of course, because
Nintendo just can't get enough of bundling Mario cart Eate Deluxe, this time in
the Europe and the United States. It's going to be bundled with the O
lead for the first time. Yes, and apparently this is coming out.
It's sometime in November. It will be three hundred and fifty US dollars three
hundred and ten British pounds and I think three hundred and fifty euros. Nintendo,
I just can't get it. You think everyone has Mario cart eight Deluxe,
fine now, but nope, they keep finding new people to sell it
to, and people when they get the switch, they want to have Mario
Kart with it and mus have been a match made in heaven. So not
too surprising, but the idea of like, hey, that Mario Curdie Bundle
in the Red Box is back again this year, and also there's the O
led Mario Curdiate Deluxe Bundle. It's kind of funny from Nintendo at this point.
What do you think? Yeah, it's just slightly better, right,
just being able to play it on that better screen because the screen I personally
didn't justify it at the time, But then you get hit with these bundles
like that. Well maybe maybe now, oh yeah, yeah, I mean
I think it's obviously for people upgrading, they're still like hege, it's out
there with the coold either cool designs or just say by now maybe that screen
has worn you down, but for because you almost certainly have Mario Curdiate Deluxe
in some form at this point. So this is definitely just aimed at that
audience of people who maybe just saw the Mario movie and now they're like,
hey, yeah, I'm gonna get the Switch this holiday. I'm gonna wait
for a deal or a bundle, and when they go to the store,
this is going to be the bundle on the shelf that they are most likely
going to get if they want that upgraded oled version. Yeah, it's extended
everyone audience, you know, grandparents, aunts and uncles and stuff at the
best Buy or whatever, and they see the bundle like, oh, Mario
Kart and like, I love this when I was a kid. I'm gonna
get it for my you know kid who probably doesn't have a Switch yet,
who just turned five or six or seven or something like that. That's that's
an easy just you know, Nintendo going through the motions. They know what,
they know what to do, they know how to spell those boxes.
Now, the real reason I included this here is that we basically have had
it Mario Kart eight Deluxe Bundle every year of the Switch is life. I
think even in that first year they did a bundle, but if they did,
it was definitely the year after and every year since. Uh. Clearly
Mario Kart is key to Nintendo selling selling hardware, at least in their opinion,
like that's it's a huge part of the process of doing that. So
when we get around to a switch to Mario Kart nine's got to be up
front early on, you would think, right, or what I feel like,
the timing is more uh probably set up for another uh I don't want
to use this word here place, but another mainline Mario game. No,
yes, whatever, the Bassarspiary stuff is going to end up being. I
think that that probably lines it up, and then Mario Kart eight maybe maybe
it comes late. I don't know how you create a package that looks better
than Deluxe, right, And I don't know if it's concerned with that,
but I think you would have to at least say, like I mean,
they're Nintendo. They could probably get away with anything. People will just hand
them their money, but you know, you'd want to have a package at
least as good looking in terms of characters and tracks and all that, and
that probably all takes time. So yeah, I don't know that's a good
Obviously you're you're hundreds and instincts are are pretty on the money most of the
time, man, So I wouldn't put it past too Yeah, I would
just imagine that the you know, god, it's been ten years since Mario
Card eight first debuted, right, so we're in that range. It's not
too far off of that. And so we're still running on that same game,
and obviously it's still selling. But you know, and that team has
been making maps now for your courses for Mario Kart eight Deluxe DLC, and
that's wrapping up right now. I think the last the last one come out
or has it, or it's about to come out something like that. So
yeah, yeah, they are finally, finally, finally, for real,
for real, for real wrapping up mariy Cart eight Deluxe. Uh. I
do think that they're trying to time it so that they kind of don't miss
a beat. And I think in that first year, at the latest that
second year, we get Mario Kart nine, uh something along like they say
they app the mobile versions Mario Kart nine, so we'll call it something else.
Uh. But but yeah, I at that point, like you do
have a good point though the package of marik Cart eight Deluxe at this point
is so robust and so uh and just like so supported after this latest round
of DLC that it's going to be difficult for marik Cart nine to look good
next to that. But I imagine one thing that they don't think consumers will
care. It's a new Mario Kart, and they show up for a new
marik Kart, and I think they're probably going to be right about that.
And also I do expect them to go all out. They've been They've been
better about that. The Nintendo is a company that I think I would have
criticized in the past for the new Super Mario Brothers games, being like,
oh, yeah, hey, we have an art style that works, let's
just reuse those assets. And hey, I love when developer uses assets.
I think that's a great way to make more games more quickly and more affordably.
That's awesome. Nintendo's one of the richest companies in the world. They
don't need to always do that for four Mario games in a row. But
they're like, no, you know what, now we got wonder We're going
to take our time with it. We're going to put a ton of new
new ideas in it. We are actually going to think about the visual style
and how to upgrade it. And I'm like, okay, if they're doing
that with Mario, I think they would probably have a similar approach to Mario
Kart, where it's like, let's put a little extra effort either into the
visuals or maybe into the presentation of like, oh, it's not just Mario
now it is a Nintendo racer, and how do we bridge that gap from
it being Mario Karts to the Nintendo Kart. Probably still call it Mario Kart,
but you know, have some way of like bringing all that into the
game. And I'm like, yeah, that would be I think a very
big success in terms of, oh, well, now this is a new
Mario Kart that I have to have because this was never possible before to race
around as you know, whatever characters that they would end up bringing in there
samus I suppose. I don't know, does that sound right to you?
We've got to be thinking about the long stretch right after the Mario Kart eight
DLC stuff. I mean, that was an old game when they ported it,
and then there's selling content on it and just like you know, turn
on the money fascet. So there's there's got to be plans for any type
of game like that where they're going to have like an extended content plan.
So that kind of scares me a little bit. So maybe even like you
said, like a new Mario Kart nine or ten Mario Kart X, if
you will, we'll come out with a small offering and then they're like,
well, we got all these DLC packs, you can you know, pay
an extra thirty bucks you'll get all that stuff or whatever. So people are
just gonnad up saying paying paying one hundred bucks for that soccer ie or it's
not soccer eye gosh, who is the Smash Brothers guy, Smash it's gonna
have the same problem, sachirist the Smash guy, And we're actually we're talking
about him prey pretty soon. Actually there's a for you. But yeah,
he was saying something similar about, you know, how do you follow up
to Smash Ultimately, Yeah, we have we have that story today. We're
going to talk about it in a little bit. But yeah, I mean
right, no, that's perfect. Now, it's a good teaser. Keep
people hooked, right, that's how you do it. I've never done a
new show before. I don't know. I think that Nintendo is getting better
about that specific problem though, because it's just in the past. I think
they would have just done it by the numbers, and now they're like,
man, we keep holding onto games because like we're gonna slot him in later.
Sometimes we hold on to a game for a year or two years.
What if we just like slowed down the development process a little bit and made
it okay to keep working on a game for a longer period of time to
throw in more cool ideas, and you know we're benefiting from that, as
evidenced by Super Mario Brothers. Wonder I think. So you think we get
like a new double dash mechanic or something with the next Yeah, I think
they'll have a new sort of a double dash like mechanic built in there.
That will be one of the things. And then I think the other gimmick
will be everybody is here. It'll be a big part of it is they'll
start the trailer and it'll be Mario and Luigi and he'll do the desk stare
and they'll have a couple other things and there they'll be like, yes,
this is just Mario Kart. And then suddenly like Samus will pull up and
whoever else. You know. I guess they've had a couple of non Mario
characters in there before, but still, I think they'll go a long way
towards showing this is going to be so exciting. If you're into that wider
Nintendo universe, you're not gonna be able to miss out on that. And
I think that's really going to work for them. Okay, let's take a
quick break. When we get back. We got a lot more news everybody.
We got to Mario Wonder doing really well in the sales charts as expected,
Xbox having some weirdness with their accessories going forward. We'll talk about all
of that right after this, and we're back. We're back, everybody.
The UK charts are out again this week and Mario Wonder has now jumped ahead
of Spider Man two and takes the top spot. This is from Jim Norman
at Nintendo Life. This week's UK box charts are in and has once again
been a tight competition at the top of the pack. Despite picking up the
silver medal in its debut chart appearance, Super Mario Brothers, Wonder has managed
to jump ahead of Marvels Spider Man two this time around and lands in first
place. As word continues to spread, we could see the Flower Kingdom's latest
sticking around in the charts for a while. This basically goes as I think
most people would have predicted. Spider Man two is this massive blockbuster. It's
going to have long legs. It's going to do very well for a very
long time. It's going to be like the PlayStation five game to get.
But two D Mario games are like the long Legs game. They just sell
and sell and sell forever and ever forever. I think New Super Mario Brothers
You Deluxe, the one that came out on the Switch, not including any
of its we use sales, the Port to the Switch sold sixteen million copies,
which is way more than most games sell on a PlayStation or Xbox,
even the biggest games on those platforms. The only games they actually kind of
come close to that or regularly are the Spider Man games. So a brand
new two D Mario that is getting really good reviews and and seems like a
can't miss game was always going to do well at launch. But it's also
one of those games that is going to just sell and sell forever. So
in week two it only had been a fifty five percent decline, which GfK
and Games Industry dapt Is pointed out, that's a pretty good week to week,
Like from week one to week two, it's not bad. It's actually
maintaining a lot of momentum. Spider Man dropped something like sixty six percent or
something like that in that range. So yeah, and that's that's more normal.
So yes, Mario two d Mario maintaining that momentum not too surprising,
right, yeah. I'll also PlayStation five is capped, right, the install
bass a very good point is diinormous. So and like you said, it's
kind of you're just like checking the box. You're like, yes, this
Mario game is going to sell gamebusters, uh, and that's going to be
okay. So yeah, I think just by just by install based alone,
you know, place Spider Man two is out of disab It's impressive how much
it's sold in that sort of thing. And also we just knew this was
going to happen, right yep. Absolutely, And it's the kind of thing
where Spider Man will also be in this chart, in the various charts for
years to come, Like it really will be the Spider Man Marvel Spider Man
in twenty eighteen, and then Miles Morales combined together did something like over thirty
million copies maybe maybe like maybe closer to thirty five million, And that's massive.
That's huge. Most franchises in two games never come anywhere close to that.
But this Mario game could get to twenty five thirty million on its own,
Like that's how big it is. So yeah, a lot of that
will depend on like how it gets ported to the next system or if it's
backward compatible, but if it is, it will easily get to twenty million,
and then beyond that, it's like all that is icing on top of
that. Yeah, for sure. And with the reports of like full supplies
of ps fives and stores, Spider Man two is going this is going to
be hanging in there pretty tight. I saw that, and even like my
wife was a target or something, say there's so many PlayStation fives now,
and I was like, yeah, they said they were going to have a
whole supply for the first time since COVID, So there you go. Yeah,
and they have a little bit of a uh we have a story about
that as well coming up here in a second about them. Likely likely yeah,
no, perfect, They're likely them hitting their very lofty goal that they
had for the beginning of this fiscal year. They're well on their way to
hitting that. We'll get to that in a second. In the meantime,
Xbox will block unauthorized third party controllers. This comes from James Bachelor at Games
Industry Dotiz. Microsoft will block the use of unauthorized third party controllers and accessories
with its Xbox consoles as of next month. Windows Central reported that some users
have already been seen an air message when using such devices warning them that unauthorized
accessories will be unusable with Xbox from November twelfth, twenty twenty three. An
example of the air message says that the user's unauthorized accessory. Unauthorized accessory will
be blocked from eleven twelve, twenty twenty three, people to return to the
store or contact the manufacturer. Microsoft then prompts players to find authorized successories via
the Xbox website. Games Industry dot Is reached out to Microsoft, which confirmed
the air message is authentic. Microsoft and other licensed Xbox hardware partners accessories are
designed and manufactured with quality standards for performance, security, and safety. A
spokesperson told let's see games industry up is that's right, and unauthorized accessories can
compromise the gaming experience on Xbox consoles. Gamers may receive a pop up warding
that their accessory is unauthorized. Eventually, the unauthorized accessory will be blocked from
use to preserve the console gaming experience. For a full list of accessories that
are supported on Xbox consoles, please visit xbox dot com slash accessories. Microsoft's
new policy is expected to come into a full effect from November seventeenth. Some
effective controllers are already unable to connect with the Xbox consoles. Sources told Windows
Central that the new policy lines up with Microsoft's plans to enable third party peripherals
manufacturers to create wireless controllers for xbot. At president, the vast majority of
third party controllers for Xbox consoles are wired, although the first wave of official
third party wireless devices are released earlier this year. Even headsets are only able
to work with Xbox if they receive approval and a special security chip from Microsoft.
I see that. I see Microsoft here evan putting safety and security up
front and foremost, and I suppose that that's probably a thing. It must
be a thing. But do you think that this is the ulterior motive here
is they want to have control over the accessories and get their cut. It's
hard for me to tell. Yeah, I think Microsoft has done such a
good job of building that good guy Xbox image that one stuff like this comes
down, you're like, eh, and you don't question it as much.
But I think definitely one of those moves where they're like, we're just leaving
money on the table here. They could get third party manufacturers to pay them
a license or whatever for I don't know if they've said that outright, but
I would assume that's where they get their proprietary Yeah, wireless tech, you
would assume that's how that would work exactly. I'm assuming that. Yeah.
Yeah, So I think this definitely is like they're moving into an Apple realm
or something like. It's like, well even probably because Apple stuff works with
Bluetooth, and you know, other like what does this do for companies like
eight bit do or eight bit two and you know, I would say like
mad cats, but just because I'm old, sure, but like stuff gaming
or something right which they use the original hardware in some cases with that stuff
so yeah, I'm really curious about this one. But it does seem it
seems like somebody on the top level was like, we're losing money, like
let's lock this stuff down. Yeah, the story says this, and I
figured this is probably the case. A lot of these devices are already Xbox
licensed, and you know that because they have like the Xbox button like built
into their controller and it has the Xbox logo. They wouldn't be able to
use that if they weren't already paying a licensing fee. The likely the most
likely thing is a lot of those companies aren't going to be affected by this.
They are already in that ecosystem there. It probably means good things for
them is they can now start selling official wireless controllers that actually connect natively to
the device without any extra dongles or things like that, and so that,
you know, and the wireless headsets too, Like you're gonna need dongles for
most of those devices because Microsoft has its proprietary wireless there. Because Bluetooth has
been kind of shoddy. Although my pixel updated Evan with uh has a new
codec opus for Bluetooth and it's like, man, the latency on this got
a lot better. It's not perfect, but like it used to be like
watching a video of a movie, like the lip sync was so bad I
almost couldn't watch it, And now it's like, no, that's not a
problem at all. I think maybe for gaming it might still be a little
bit, but who the fuck is gaming on a pixel? Yes, so
this I'm mostly okay with this, as long as perfole manufacturers are able to
do as much support as they always were, and it seems like it's not
really affecting them if it's just trying to like keep out I guess weird third
party Chinese accessory makers. I mean, I like those companies. I usually
get they make a lot of cool stuff. But I suppose I get that
as well, because you know, the consoles are supposed to be mostly locked
down. They are supposed to be these walled guardians of sorts. But you
know, you could plug a mouse and keyboard into your into your Xbox and
it just works like a mouse and keyboard. So this does feel a little
bit out of step with that, right Yeah, And and you lose a
lot of that support for you know, everything that came before, Right,
That's that's kind of the concern. And that's what i'd say too, Like
you're talking about how you know, for safety and security, maybe this is
a better better thing. Also for like product design and development, you're going
to get better quality products. I think with this where you know you're you're
dealing with Microsoft directly, so you know somebody there is going to actually look
at your weird controller or set up whatever you made before. Like they're proving
you to have the proprietary hardware software. So I think that's good. But
but yeah, you're gonna lose that weird stuff that kind of comes out of
left field and like, look at this thing and what it does and how
it works, and I mean it's Xbox is already handling their own accessibility kind
of situation with their own controller. Yeah, and that seems to be going
well. So I would be worried about that. What if somebody needs to
build their own thing for accessibility and now they can't because of this proprietary stuff.
I think that sucks, yes, But you know, outside of that,
I don't know, it will probably mostly be fine. This feels like
it's like, I don't know, just the modern dystopia that we live in
as they keep getting weird and corporations take over everything. Yeah, and the
Xbox Accessibility Controller uses those the phone jackports, which is the standard for accessibility
stuff in general, Like across the board, it's like all these devices use
that phone jackport. I can't remember what the actual technical term is for it,
but the people already are using that to plug things into the wheelchairs and
all these other devices. So the fact that that the Xbox Accessibility Controller has
that there's already a standard that like, oh, Eve, even if this
controller doesn't work for you as is, there's things that you've built for yourself
in other realms, like controlling a wheelchair, you can plug it right into
that Xbox Accessibility Controller and continue interacting with games that way. I'm still sure
though, that people have at actually built their own controllers to have nothing to
do with the accessibility controller, and you would hope that there would be a
way for those to work and without having to be like, well, now
we've got to plug them in and go through the accessibility controller to get through
there. You could see. I can imagine that being cumbersome for some people.
So yeah, you just DM that booty and he delivers that personally to
your house. That's exactly. It's called the booty call, yes exactly.
Uh yeah, we'll see obviously how this plays out. I will say that
I do prefer a world where there are a lot more wireless Xbox controller options
on the market as opposed to all the wired ones that we had. That
was like, hey, those could still get made, but we were always
kind of stuck with Xboxes controller. It's not that they're great. I like
them, but I do like a lot of these third party manufacturers, like
a bit do so I like their ability to do it though, so I
have that option to say I'm going to make a company that does that.
Yes, getting rid of that just it has implications that you or I can't
can't really like fathom right now exactly, and then when it's gone, we
won't know to think about it right exactly. Yes, that's a very good
we don't know what we don't know here all right. PlayStation five is drawing
close to twenty five million units sold in twenty twenty three alone. This comes
from Kieran Harris, a game reactor. There's no doubt whatsoever that the PlayStation
five has been a great success for Sony, and this is despite the fact
the console has sometimes been unreasonably difficult to get a hold of. As we
previously reported, the PlayStation five is no longer in short supply worldwide, So
if you haven't managed to get one yet and now might be the time to
buy one. Sony, which is aimed to sell twenty five million units in
its fiscal twenty twenty three, may now achieve this thanks to the fact that
the console is well stopped. Of course, it's expected that Sony will sell
a lot of consoles during the upcoming holiday Incredibly, it will be the first
time that supply will be able to meet the demand for the console a head
of the holiday shopping season. And then on top of that, this is
just for the standard version of the PlayStation five that we've had since the beginning.
Now they're going to slim model, and Sony has promised that there's gonna
be a ton of those as well. The system was already mostly on pay
to hit this goal. It seems like it's going to crush this holiday season.
Yeah, that's my expectation. How about you. Absolutely? Yeah.
Like I said, my wife was at the target, she was like,
there's so many PlayStation fives and just you thought you'd never see it. I
remember like running a couple of different stories and inside Gaming was like, maybe
like it's going to be now. Tony promised that there's going to be more
PlayStation fives, and it kind of happened, you know, as they said
it. But it seems like we're now at the point where you could just
walk in and pick one up, where I don't think that that had necessarily
been the case, you know, up until maybe a couple of months ago.
Yep. And it doesn't seem like them facing out the original version of
the PS five four, this new slimmer model is going to cause any problems
either. It seems like Sony's fully prepped and ready to go. It's probably
why it took them a little bit longer to announce the thing and kind of
get into the swing of marketing, because they're like, let's wait until we're
sure. They seem pretty sure, so probably not going to misbeat this holiday.
And then if it's able to hit this twenty five million unit sold in
twenty twenty three goal, which you did set out at the beginning of its
year, that should put it back ahead of the pace of PS four officially,
which was something that looked out of the question early on when supply was
so constrained, and now it's like, well, nope, that corrected in
about a year once things were Once the supply was in stores, people bought
it so fast that it just fixed itself, and they are growing from generation
to the generation. I remember seeing the earnings calls too, where like Sony's
like, now we're going to be right on track with PS four, and
was like, really, it doesn't seem that way, you know, And
yeah, they pulled it off, and I'm curious. I haven't looked in
a while, but they're like anticipating something in parallel with like PS two as
well, where I was like, that's crazy. They think they're going to
sell as much as they sold. PS Two's was like greatest selling comps of
all the time. Just I'm waiting to see it. I guess they must
have some pretty good long term plans, but I'm not sure. Yeah.
I didn't include it as a news story, but there is rumors that Sony
is backing away from its game games of service sort of goals and its strategy
where it's like we're gonna have twelve games as a service games launching over the
next couple of years, and that is like, alongside our continued investment and
continued growing investment and the kinds of games you associate with PlayStation, we're gonna
have a bunch of games of service games and that's going to be our future.
Now, the rumors are that they're backing away from that slightly and then
they're looking to partner with companies like I guess, I think, Bandy Namco
and a couple others, a capcom I think, and that sounds like to
do similar deals so that they have with with Square Enix to get a bunch
of big third party exclusives, and that's now going to be the alternative goal
here. Do you think that even with like, if they were to make
that shift and with the pace at which they can get for a big first
party games out, that they can kind of maintain a strong release schedule for
the rest of the PS five, Because I think this is gonna end up
We're gonna look back at this year as like not a week year, because
it's kind of it's going to like, obviously the PlayStation five sold lots of
third party support. Spider Man two is massive, and there was some stuff
earlier on, but it was a slower year compared to what we've had for
the PS five up to this point and likely what we'll have going forward and
with if they are able to maintain that, do you think they can get
to that one hundred and fifty million consoles sold that the PS two hit man
with Sony, I don't know. Like with Nintendo, I'm like, never
bet against Nintendo, right, But with PlayStation stuff, it's hard to tell
of them because I think a lot of their their messaging is really delayed a
lot of times, and then you pick up stuff for earnings calls and stuff.
I mean, I think it's possible, but I don't have a lot
of confidence in it. Yeah, yes, that's my quick answer. Yeah,
it seems I think that this is probably going to end up being the
best selling PlayStation since the PS two, that's for sure, But we'll see
if it's able to uh to get you know, anywhere, getting close to
that. That's tough. That's really really tough. And you know, I
think what we saw with the PS four is PS four had all the momentum
in the world, and it's like, no, now we're ready for the
PS and that's what's gonna happen. As so as the PS five is here,
all of the excitement that was there for the PS four will shift all
at once and there's no sort of lingering and appointed this out. Before that
lingering used to be people who are waiting for the console to be one hundred
and fifty dollars, two hundred dollars, maybe even ninety nine dollars. They
did that for the PS two because there wasn't an iPad. They nowadays they're
like, no, we're just gonna get an iPad or iPhone and I'll just
get free games on there and I'll play that. I'm not sitting around waiting
for a cheap version of this new console. I'm not even thinking about that.
I play games on my phone. And so that that it's like a
couple the audiences have bifurcated and now they just have nothing to do with one
another for the most part. So I think it's going to be very difficult
for any system to really get up into that one hundred and fifty million million
dollar one hundred and fifty million units sold range, except for something like the
Switch, which has the benefit of being both a handheld and a console,
and it's put generations. Yes, yes, exactly, so that's going to
get maybe close, but also the Switch probably isn't going to surpass that number
either. So yeah, the COMPARI since I saw the PlayStation two library with
like a condensed version of like, look how fast these ps fives are selling,
you know, and the in terms of supply and demand, right,
and then you know they're always weird stuff of the math where they're leveraging those
percentages and things to like say big things or point out relevant things. The
thing I constantly remind myself though, is like every year, as we move
forward, there are more people playing video games than ever before. Yeah,
right, so that's like we always have a like a very high ceiling in
that regard to sell more video games than I've ever been sold, to sell
more hardware than it's ever been sold. But I think you make a really
good point about the conditions of the market in which there wasn't these like Apple
devices or tablet devices and things every and streaming, right, all these different
things and buying for people's attention where it's like you either watch TV or you
play video game. Now it's like you have unlimited options with you. So
it's definitely an interesting time to see. But the potential, the potential is
there for PlayStation five to go there. I just have confident in it,
you know, Yeah, it'll be tough, like it's it is on like
the Bell curve of where things end up, like the heavy part, you
know, the meaty part of the Bell curve is probably going to be in
that one hundred and twenty hundred and thirty million console sold range, maybe even
one hundred and forty million. It is where it starts to taper off.
And then like the small probability down there of getting up to one hundred and
fifty million consoles sold is on the chart, but it's like very unlikely.
We'll see. I'm excited, you know, who knows they got a pro
model that is supposedly in the works, and maybe that resets the generation for
them in a really strong way and they carry that forward for another five six
years, and then we'll see in those in that reality, it could get
to one hundred and fifty million, all right. Marvel's Wolverine exists in the
same universe as Marvel Spider Man two. This is from Alex Hopley at Game
Reactor. Insomniac Games has just seen the launch of Marvel Spider Man two,
an incredible superhero game that gives fans the web slinging experience they've wanted for years.
Now that Spidey's last latest outing is a renowned success, though fans are
looking to the studios in next superhero game. Marvel's Wolverine has only seen a
cinematic teaser so far, but with the track record Insomniac has, many are
are incredibly hyped just from that. Also, thanks to a recent interview with
Brian Antahar over at kind of Funny Games Cast, we might have a new
reason to be excited. Antahar confirms when asked if the games were set in
the same universe, that they're all ten forty eight, which is like the
Marvel assigned code for this universe in their multiverse. Intara also explain why Marvel
Spider Man two doesn't contain a Wolverine easter egg. I'm just trying to make
Spider Man and trying to get Spider Man off the ground while there's another Marvel
thing. I think for us it was like, hey, let's just look
at the let that team cook, let them make the game they want to
make, and you know, who knows what the future holds, but right
now, let's let them do their thing, and that game's going to be
great. I think it's completely fair. Yeah, I think that this is
the right way to approach it. They're doing really cool things with Spider Man
two and having allusions to other things in the Marvel universe. They have it
like shied away from that. Like you could visit the Avengers Tower, it's
the biggest building in the game, and Doctor Strange's enclave whatever that's called.
That Santum Staurium, the Sanctum Santaurum. Yeah, goddamn, that's in there
as well. You could just look at that thing. So and that's cool.
But it's like, well, if you're gonna do that and you're making
a Wolverine game, that Wolverine should probably be in this universe, and that's
going to be the case. I like that. How do you feel about
it? Yeah? I like what you said on the show. I think
it was like last week or something about how much restraint Insomniac has showed,
or maybe it was a guest who said it in terms of, you know,
they've got the whole Spider Verse thing already and then they're kind of just
focusing on these these stories about Peter and Miles and kind of that that journey,
and to focus on that without getting spun off into too many different directions
or you know, bringing in Avengers, like, you know, given the
popularity of the Marvel movies and stuff like that, I think it'd be a
real bummer if we got I think it'd be a real bummer if we got
a Wolverine game and then man half the time, Like you want to like
let Wolverine exist and be in his own like Wolverine sphere and have like a
very Wolverine focused story because I in comics you can get that a lot,
but he's always with the X Men. You've got, like and when they've
done it in the movies, that's been bad, right, So I would
really love to see Insomniac. Do you like a very focused Wolverine story that
doesn't necessarily have to be about his origins or whatever, but do the same
thing they did for Spider Man in the way that Insomnia is how and just
like really appreciate these characters. Yeah, I I you know, I'm really
glad what they did with Spider Man and not doing the origin story again.
And I think that's probably the right call for Wolverine. I wouldn't hate a
couple of flashbacks to Weapon X or whatever, especially depending on the setting that
we're going to be in. If we're like up in the wilderness of Canada,
as someone in the airbag and Chad says that, and it's like,
I think the trailer was like slightly suggesting something along those lines, and there
was like magicpor right, that's right, Madropoor. Yes, yes, it's
the the underground Criminal, the Mutant City, right, Okay, yes,
so well in that case, you could also see him like running into enemies
from his past. And I think some flashbacks could be cool with various eras
of Wolverine, because that's a cool idea in itself, the fact this guy's
been around for so long. What can you do with that? And I
think that would naturally lead to what we're gonna see, some snippets of its
origin. We don't need the entire thing to be about this is what turned
Logan into Wolverine. I don't need that. But I think that having these
things exist in the same universe enable some cool sharing of lore. But I
think that Insomniac knows it doesn't need to go much beyond that that he doesn't
There doesn't need to be a button you pressed to call in Peter Parker to
come help you. Right, that's not gonna happen, right, And don't
get me wrong, Like I want to see a Wolfne Holkin Spider Man team
up game like that would be incredible. Yeah, but I also build these
characters up first. You know, there's like a there's a formula, like
people get burnt out on comic book crossovers when they start happening time and exactly
what's happened with the Marvel Cinematic Universe, right, It's like everything has to
be acrossover now, and I think it affects the storytelling of the of stories
you can tell. So yeah, yep. And I think they've seen that
lesson be learned the MCU and by Disney, and I think that they'll be
like, you know what, we'll be a little bit. We're gonna pull
back on that a little bit and just kind of use it where it's fun
and not make it the central pillar of what is happening with our video games.
And that's probably the right choice totally, all right. There's a report
games industry investment deals to increase in twenty twenty four. This from Steven Totilo
at Axios. Mergers and acquisitions in the games industry are picking up after an
extended quiet period, according to a new third quarter report from Drake Star Partners.
Consolidation is a big topic in video gaming, but Drake Star tracked thirty
three m and A deals worth around five billion between July and September. By
the sheer number of deals that was a two year low, but the deal
value exceeded three of the last five quarters, when all the deals tallied in
each period totaled less than one billion. Deals for twenty twenty three's third quarter
including mobile gaming firm Platikis purchase of Yoda Games and in Play Labs for around
four hundred and fifty million dollars, as well as the successful one point seven
billion dollar offer led by Golvin Sachs to take educational gaming platform for Cohoot private.
So it's like things are happening in the periphery of like the like the
core gaming space still but there's still money flowing into these deals, is basically
the story here, and the expectation is that companies that like ten Cents Sony
take to the savvy, which is that the Saudi Arabian company. They're going
to see that the things aren't slowing down, even if it's in these spaces
that they don't always operate in, and they're like, well, we're going
to have to get back out there and make deals happen, or else we
are going to miss out. We're going to have an acquisition fomo, and
we can't have that. So they are likely going to pick up their pace
as well. At least that's the expectation of Drake Star, which I think
is might have some incentive to believe this because I think they are involved in
some of these deals and make money that way. But also I believe them
because there's no reason just to think that these companies really would slow down because
they still do have quite a bit of money, and inflation is still pretty
high even with the interest rates being high, so means it's difficult to borrow
money, which will make some deals difficult to pull off. Many of them
still do have money in the bank that is losing value at a rate that
it's greater than that they are accustomed to, and so that means it's better
to spend it now than to hold on to it and have it be worth
less later and have things be more expensive, right, Yeah, And unfortunately,
they've a lot of the gaming companies and publishers and things who a lot
of these companies to collectively have laid off thousands of employees as well, so
they've got cash right now. Unfortunately. Like that's a weird way to frame
it. I think you're right, laid off really sucks, But there's money
now, and also there's promise of money, so money is going to get
spent, right, Like, this is one of the best years in gaming
We've seen them quite some time. Just things are popping off in a way.
Or you just talked about Spider Man. There's obviously going to be people
who want to make more money, interested in paying for more video games to
kind of spin up. Whether that translates into like, you know, more
sequels and things like that are different, ip oh, Like that's a different
conversation. But there's definitely money here now and definitely a lot of interest.
The people with money always follow the money. They're going to go there,
Yes, exactly, Yes, they get in line and they do whatever whatever
anyone else with money is doing. That is very true. They're all desperately
scared of anything, so they just do what the crowd is doing. Sakarai
is skeptical that future Smash Bros. Games can match Ultimate's scope. This is
from Ali Reynolds at Nintendo Life. Masahiro Sakarai, the director of Smash Brothers
franchise, has released a new video looking back on the development of Super Smash
Brothers Ultimate for the Switch. During the twelve to thirteen minute presentation, Sakarai
delves into the koopious adjustments and additions required to make Ultimate appeal to both veterans
and newcomers, the difficulty face, as well as the difficulties face when dealing
with a sixteen gigabyte switch card versus a twenty five gigabyte we U disc,
and the effects of the COVID nineteen pandemic that the pandemic had on the development
for DLC characters. Toward the end of the video, Sakarai ponders the prospect
of future Smash Brothers titles. While he doesn't rule out the possibility of another
entry to the franchise, he's ad admittedly skeptical that the development team would be
able to create something that goes beyond Super Smash Brothers Ultimates scope and ambition.
As for what comes next for the Smash Brothers series, he said, even
I'm not sure I feel we truly succeeded in making people happy with this game.
But now that Super Smash Brothers has grown to be monstrous in size,
I'd say it's difficult to imagine an increase of this magnitude ever happening. Again,
he speaks a little bit further on this, but I think basically what
he's saying is, hey, it's you can't get bigger than Ultimate. This
really is the ultimate, as in like the end of the road for this
line of Super Smash Brothers, which to me suggests that if I think Sachari
were to go back to the drawing board, I think he would be like,
let's mix things up a little bit now, or reboot things. Let's
take things back to the basics and start building up again, which I don't
think is something Nintendo is going to be too eager to do right away,
which is probably why the very next Smash Brothers game that is going to be
released for the Switch to almost certainly is going to be a Super Smash Brothers
Ultimate Deluxe. At least, that's my thinking at this point. What do
you think I mean two? And we talked about it before too. It's
kind of the pay Day three pay Day two problem right where you have a
game or you know, a decade or so and it has content for that
long and they've been balancing and iterating. You just you cannot launch a game
at the scope and Master Brothers And it was impressive when they did it right,
and then they still had a content plan to add characters for Smash Ultimate,
but just it would take you ten years I feel like to make to
make that game at least in terms of where it is now. And I
don't know if that's the expectation, right. I think the expectation is,
especially as we have more service games, is like it would start small and
then grow, but even still and also like let soccer, I rest man
that can say yeah, he's like semi retired and you're like, well,
man, you know I know what that means. I mean someday you're going
to come back and do something that's actually going to kill you this time.
So yeah, yeah, you think you're out and they bring you back in
for one last Yep, it goes bad yeap it goes, it's going to
go real bad for him if he does. I hope that he said the
problem was, he said this in a previous video, is that he didn't
didn't have time to like train up his replacement for the next game because Ultimate
was so much work and he was constantly working on something that he just couldn't
spare the time to mentor someone that would be like the new steward of Smash
Brothers going forward. So I do think that probably does create an opportunity to,
hey, do a Deluxe and come in there and just oversee the development
and to teach those skills to a new generation while you can go rest for
after that if you want, and just go make YouTube videos which are very
good at actually so yes, so very cool sacaraic. It would allow them
to bide their time to have that that year and score those years of development.
And I think, you know, following the trend of what happened with
Mario Kardate Deluxe, I think Nintendo would be very happy to have a ten
year period of selling Super Smash Brothers Ultimate. Obviously Super Smash Brothers Flour for
REU three DS is kind of the foundation. So you can maybe consider that
at the beginning, but they did so much with Ultimate to change things up
and make it bigger and make it feel like a separate game. That really
Okay, let's count Ultimate as its own launch, which I think is completely
fair and we should. But ten years of that with like various deluxe versions
and re releases and bundles, seems very likely and it's probably gonna happen,
and I think Nintendo knows that's what they want to do for now, and
then after that's said and done, there will be an appetite for Hey,
we'll do a Melee remaster, or we will do a full reboo. Yeah.
I know it's always going to be out there. It's always out there,
just waiting to pop out at us at any moment. I feel like
with Melee two, it's love Monkey's Paul. It's like, what's going to
happen to this? It's going to be thirty locked thirty or something or good,
You're going to get it. But then like something's going to be It
would be like they'll call it Super Smash Brothers Melee, but they'll actually be
like, well, we brought in all the best features of everything, all
the games including tripping, and that's exactly truly a true nightmare. All right.
Last story here, Super Nintendo top Gear Racing Collection coming to multiple platforms
with a new game. This is from Sinaia Bates at Destructoid. We're about
to gain access to even more retro classics on Switch and several other platforms come
January. The top Racer Collection features remastered Super Nintendo racing games to play,
and it's set to launch on January eleventh, twenty twenty four, for Switch,
PS four, PS five, Xbox one, Slash Series SNX, as
well as Steam. The top Racer Collection will feature popular popular nineties racing trilogy
top Gear, top Gear two and top Gear three thousand. First hitting the
shelves in nineteen ninety two, the S and S high Speed Racing series gain
popularity among fans across the globe for being very good games. I like these
games a lot, Evans, so I'm glad that we're getting them back.
They're also doing a new game called top Gear meets Horizon Chase, basically where
they're gonna have like top Gear you know now called top Racer stuff, and
I think it's called top Racer Crossroads mixed in with Horizon Chase, which is
the an Outrun Like, it's a game that's very similar to Outrun, and
they're going to mash those things up together, and I think that's pretty cool
as well. Obviously top Racer new name because top Gear very popular television program
now and they want to avoid getting sued because the both things have a same
name in a similar space that could be possible. That sucks because it's like
a Michael. It's like from a Alva space type. It's like, why
do I have to change my name? Yeah, exact, yeah right,
because this, yeah, this is around for longer. You're right, you
think that. But they probably didn't like renew the trademark and then they renewed
it like again later or something like that, and then it's like, well,
nope, you lost it. So this this TV show is going to
have a claim on it. But yeah, I would go with giving I
would if I were a judge, I would give this game the top Gear
trademark and say those weirdos can go to hell over there at that show.
All right, Evan, I got a poll question that we're going to get
to from last week. Let's go ahead and bring it in here. Wait
is super Mario Brothers Wonder the best online game this year. Only thirty five
percent of people were correct and saying yes, and then sixty five percent said
no. I am blown away by this game's online multiplayer. It is it
does the thing that I think I want from online multiplayer games going forward,
which is like playing on your own together and in a way where it's like
not actually affecting another person's world, but giving you ways to still do that
in minor ways that are very positive. I've said a bunch of now,
this is a strand game. You are putting you are putting down your little
standee, and you're helping people and you're rescuing them, and then all you
could do is just to give a little positive emote, and it only enables
these positive interactions, and then it's just fun to like be moving through a
level and seeing someone else figuring things out or helping you figure something out.
It was a really magical way to play. And then of course playing with
friends and enabling the races was that's also magical. And it all just works
and it doesn't like bounce you back to the main menu or something, and
it doesn't someone could just connect and it doesn't stop to be like, wait,
we got to make sure they're going to connect her or something bad'll happen
if you try to play the video game. Still, it's like no,
it all just works. So obviously it's good. It's good for Nintendo,
like, oh, for Nintendo, this is good online. But I think
in general it's also just a magical online experience. Now. I know some
people mention, hey, Balder's Gate three, and of course, but I
did a lot of that stuff a Divinity Original Sin too as well, so
it's like yeah, yeah, yeah, y, it's that. It's that,
and of course it's amazing. But I get why people think that's even
better because there's so much more going on there. I don't know, have
you tried the multiplayer in Wonder at all, because I've been forcing myself to
only play with my kids, trying to discipline my completely fair way to do
it. Yes, we'll experience this together, and you know, because they
like it, and like, I'm not going to play ahead, but then
like I play Spiderman, like damn, why you play out Us. I'm
like it's too long. I can't wait for you know, But but yeah,
I haven't played much of the online multiplayer. I watched a lot other
people on podcasts and stuff talk about it. I think it's surprising too that
Nintendo pulled this off, right, It's very surprising features that you don't associate
Nintendo with, like really online play. So now if they could just apply
the same set of like mindset to the rest of their connectivity issues and make
like, oh, yeah, we can't go back from here. They got
to figure it out from now on. Yeah, I imagine Smash Brothers with
good online multiplayer. That's sort of that that joke, which is still going
to be a joke for a while. Yes, but but but yeah,
I I boy, I just hope this is in so many more games going
forward, because it's just such a pleasant experience and it makes it feel,
you know, alive and living in a really cool way. All right.
I have another poll question that we'll get to here in a moment. In
the meantime, though, Evan, why don't tell people where they can find
you on the internet when you have going on all that good stuff? Yeah,
right now, I'm on Twitter, but because of all the changes,
and also I don't have to do it for work anymore, So, like
you got away from managing. I mean you're cracking, you're breaking up a
little bit here and there. I'm not sure, like it's been happening throughout
the episode, just a little bit of a break. So we missed some
of those details. So game work. Where can people find you? So
I'm on Twitter and Blue Sky at darth Brook and then the zero in there
right with the zero at the end. Yeah, very clever on my part
to make sure I like it with the tide Boat and then on YouTube right
now the Evan underscore Campbell, So you can find me there. Not a
lot of stuff there yet, but it's going to be ramping up soon if
I ever come back. Hopefully I have a lot more things promote. I'm
talking with a lot of people kind of behind like I've been chatting with if
any but he knows Mike Williams, Oh yeah, extend on Twitter and that's
a good boy. We've been chatting back and forth about getting some together when
usually when I get laid off, you know, it happens kind of for
I hang out with Khalef Adams from Spawn on me. I'm sure, yeah,
Conn it's great too. Yeah, we usually make something together, so
we haven't we haven't like connected yet, but something cool will come from that.
I've been talking with Alan up Heres as well, and we've been working
on some small things behind the scenes like that. So it's a weird time
for me. But things are going to start ramping up, and then eventually
I also have to find full time work, probably in the new year,
so eventually, yeah, get around to it eventually. But now I'm glad
we were able to hang out today. I really appreciate it. Yeah,
let's see here, let's get this new poll question up. Would you want
and intend to do some kind of dual screen solution for the switch to yes
or no. We'll talk about that on the game this morning's episode on Wednesday
here on Giant Bomb. Speaking of Giant Bomb, this week, we have
the bomb Cast happening tomorrow Blake Club. We'll be back on Wednesday. I'll
get back in the motorcycle, get up, and we will play some more
Ride to Hell Retribution. That's been really dumb and the response that's been really
great. Thanks everybody for hanging out and watching that with us. That was
a lot of fun. Well, hopefully we get through it pretty quickly though,
because I'm ready to move on from my game to someone else and then
you know the rest of the week. We're gonna figure it out here in
this meeting, but you can expect a voicemail, dumb truck upf We might
have some fun stuff popping off beyond all of that though, here on Giant
Bomb. In the meantime, though, Evan, thank you so much for
spinning today talking about video games. Man, I really appreciate it. Oh,
thank you man. This is bucket list up for me. It's quite
a long way from bit mob huh. Oh, yes, exactly right.
Huh it's been a while. Yeah, absolutely, yeah, it's fun to
think about the trail we've been on. All right, then, thank you
all for watching. You're the best audience in gaming. Until next time,
have a good one, take care of yourself, and goodbye.
