Speaker 1: Hi, everybody. Welcome back to the second episode of The Phillies Show with Ruben Tomorrow Junior Jim Salisbury. I am Todd's a lucky Phillies just played their first series of the season. It did not go exactly as planned. Guys, some angry people out there from the weekend, but they won yesterday, so I think that kind of alleviates some concern Let me start asking you, guys this, what kind of jumped out to you this weekend? You know, the first weekend of the season is always there's a lot of overreaction, whether if it's good or bad. Right, the Phillies had swept, it was, oh my god, they're going to win the division. They give up twenty one runs in the first two games, as oh my god, they didn't. They can't come out and you know, so much for the fast start. What kind of jumped out to you, guys, rubenoates start with you.

Speaker 2: Well, what jumped out to me is Atlantic can still rake. I mean those guys can hit, man. I mean that's a really really good offense. Some team. I think it's a well put together team. I have some concerns if you're an Atlanta fan about their bullpen that might be a little short. I do see what Alexanthopolis tried to do and adding a bunch of left handers in that bullpen to sort of combat the phillies. I think that was directly related to combating the phillies. But as far as the phillies are concerned, yeah, you know, I'm not surprised that Zach wilyppics well. I was surprised that that Aaron Nole' struggled because he was throwing the ball quite well in spring training.

Speaker 3: I like the way he was utilizing both sides of the plate.

Speaker 2: He just everything was sort of in the middle of the plate and he didn't have really a lot of sharpness on his stuff overall.

Speaker 3: And you know, I think the bullpen, and I think I.

Speaker 2: May have said this a couple of times publicly, but I just don't know that the bullpen and had enough reps and was ready. When when you have power arms in the back end of the bullpen, and that's what they have, and they don't get a ton of reps in spring training, then they don't build up the arm strength.

Speaker 3: I mean, one of their their strengths.

Speaker 2: Is their ability to you know, is their ability to create velocity. And if you don't have your power and your sharpness in the early part of the season, you're and you're not able to command your pitches, you're gonna struggle some. But they did bounce back in the last game. And Thompson did a nice job of of sort of putting the right guys in the right pockets in Game three of that series, and Ranger Schwaz did a nice job of sort of holding the team down. So no panic for me. But but two things to take away. Each team's got warts. Each one of these best better teams in the National League East have have some wartz. But Atlanta is a really, really good team and they and a Phillies are gonna have to play clean baseball to to win the division and to keep up with them.

Speaker 1: Jim, I want to ask you a question over under I looked this up this morning because Zach got pulled after eighty nine pitches, which didn't really surprise me. I know it upset a lot of people over under number of pitchers through this first weekend's games, one hundred and twelve pitchers. How many threw one hundred or more pitches over under one and a half.

Speaker 1: Marcus Stroman and Hunter Green are the only two pitchers to have thrown one hundred or more pitches. The numbers one O two and I think one hundred.

Speaker 4: So I'm not surprised that if you watched that game, you almost had to get him out at eighty nine. Zach Wheeler, I thought he did his job, to use Charlie Manuel's all saying. I thought he took him to a good place in the game. You know, it is a team. You have, you know, twenty five other guys that need to do their job, and on that given day, he handed off to the bullpen and they struggled. But you know, early in the season it's chilly, eighty nine is plenty because if you send him out there for another inning, he's over one hundred and you probably, you know, you might have to go get him middle inning if things start spiraling. You know, it's it's a long season. You got to watch him early. They've done a really good job watching I think they're guys over the last few years getting them an extra day when necessary, and I think that actually shows a little bit. In October, Nola and Wheeler have been healthy in October and pitched Wheeler especially pitched extraordinarily well, Nola mostly very well in the month of October, so I'm not surprised the protected him there early. In a few weeks he'll be knocking on one hundred and going over one hundred. But that said, you're gonna have to watch Sex Wheeler, Aaron Nola. They're they're north of thirty uh and in October is where it's at for this team, and both now are on long term. You want to get some you want to get production out of them long term. But you know, my big takeaway on the weekend was, you know, little things still matter in the game. That was a big win yesterday because everybody's up in arms if they're own three and little things. I mean, Johann Rojas hasn't hit, but contributed with his base running. That was a very big play, beating that ground ball out, putting his nose down and running through the bag. And it's just it just feels different when you know you're one and two and oh and three. But I agree with your opening statement. I think we there's so much focus on opening day and opening weekend, you know, almost an inordinate amount of focus. It's almost like the winter meetings, Like there's so much attention on the winter meetings about deals and whatnot, and if you don't make a deal, everybody goes nuts. You don't play well on opening day and opening weekend, you know, everybody goes nuts. I remember years ago the Red Sox lost the game on opening Day. They lost the opener, and the Boston Herald the next day in the Boston Herald, their back page was wait till next year. They lost the first game. So, you know, the the old cliche which I think we both detest about you can't get too high or too low. It is always violated in opening weekend. So nothing really alarmed me, even though they lost too I mean, I guess some of the swing and miss, but I think that's in this team's DNA. They're gonna You're gonna have those games all year long. They're gonna frustrate you. The important thing is that they you know, when they're on it, they put up some runs and they win the games they can.

Speaker 3: So what was your take on this weekend?

Speaker 1: Yeah, I think, well that's just kind of the general overreaction and how sometimes people get too upset about moves. You know, I get wit Mayfield has to play, you know, at some point point, he's got to play two or three times a week. So I knew. I knew because Rob said it before the game on opening Day. He's like, wit is probably going to start the next two games with the two lefties on the mound. And so sure enough, Brandon Marsh hits that home run.

Speaker 1: I go, oh my gosh, just wait till he's not in the lineup tomorrow.

Speaker 4: Going to make things really interesting because he's a veteran and you know, I think he's gonna produce and he's gonna put heat on people. He's gonna put heat on the decision makers to put him on that lineup guard because it's all about winning games and if you're if you're productive, you got to be in there.

Speaker 1: And he said that when he talked with Rob before he signed, He's like, or right after he signed, he said, I know your your what your plan is for me, but I'm going to force your hand and try to get in this lineup a little more. And I think Rob loved that response. You know you want him. You want a guy that's not gonna just go all right, I'll get my two start a week and and uh and go from there.

Speaker 1: It's the The Marsh thing is interesting to me because they have said for a couple of years now that they see him as an everyday player, but so far they have really protected him against gets left handed left handed pitching, you know.

Speaker 2: So it's a really it's it's a super delicate it's a delicate situation and it has to be you know, maneuvered in a way for the manager. You know, how do you continue to develop two young left handed hitters and Stot and Marsh and still giving up at bats to wit meryfield to you know, I mean, you got to really work it in.

Speaker 2: A tough thing to do and keep the guy sharp and to keep everybody sharp, not just keep him happy, but keep them sharp and keep them productive.

Speaker 2: It's it's a nice little uh putt to make when it's a winding to make, uh for Rob Thompson and uh. And that's why it gets paid to be a major league manager. I mean, that's that's the beauty of being able to manage that and uh, and I think Rob will do a nice shop in that.

I mean, I understand getting him arrest I also understand getting guys a little rest that first week because guys are coming out of spring training and they've seen some pitches. You don't want to lose them in the first week. You don't want him to get stale in the first week. You want everybody part of it in that first week. Understand that. But to me, Stott is, uh, you know one you know and Rob.

Speaker 1: Rob kind of said that the other day. He said he's a guy, which is I guess his way of saying he's a dude, which is an everyday player. So I think they look at the Stot that way. So for sure, you now like, how do you balance Brandon marsh who wants to play every day develop them? Yeah, it is going to be interesting to see kind of how it unfolds as the season goes. So another thing that jumped out to me was, again super small sample size, what did you guys make of Kyle Schwarber's at bats? He's he made a point going into the season two hit the ball the opposite way more. He pulled the ball like more than fifty percent of the time last year. He's a little bit healthier. He seems to be moving a little bit better. Had a hit the straightaway center, had a hit the left center field. That is that encouraging to you, guys?

Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean I'd like to comment on that one because I that's what I saw, and it was really encouraging.

Speaker 3: I Mean, I know, he hit the home run.

Speaker 2: Bullet to right, but that was just you know, typical Kyle's bat speed. But but I think the other bats that he had having I mean hit a hard ground ball up the middle that a play was made by the shortstop.

Speaker 2: And the fact that I think that these seems a little bit healthier on his legs, whether it's his knee or hip or whatever the case may be. I mean, we saw what happened to Ryan Howard when he lost his lower half. He was just not able to stay on the ball long enough to drive the ball the other way, which was a real that was like one of his great strengths is the ability to drive the ball to the other the opposite field, and Ryan really lost his ability to do that consistently once you know, he had the achilles issue and the knee issues.

Speaker 3: I like the fact that Kyle's moving around better. Stole a bag, stole third base. My goodness, went first to third.

Speaker 2: He's not going to be a base dealer, but it's great to see him feel good enough physically to be able to do that.

Speaker 2: That, I remember Charlie Manuel talking to Jim told me about this, If you just hit three hundred, your numbers will be ridiculous. And it doesn't have to be three hundred for Kyle, but hits two, twenty or forty. I mean, think about the numbers that he can put together. I mean, he might, he might, he made you know, he may do some serious damage if he continues to have that sort of mindset.

Speaker 2: To him and a whole other bunch of spots in the field for him to have success.

Speaker 4: No question, if he Hits two thirty five. Getting back to I remember hearing Charlie preach that all the time. He preached it to Ryan Howard, he preached it to a number of guys. Hit two hundred and everything will take care of itself. Watching Swarm over the weekend on TV, and Mack Gelb wrote about this today confirming he looks trimmer to me on TV. He looks trimmer and a little lighter on his feet. That can only help. That can only help in terms of quickness, That can only help in terms of the force you put on your legs. Keep his legs healthy, healthy, era, and that's that's a really good thing in my opinion.

Speaker 6: And when he wears his pants along he may even looks thinner. Yeah, he pulls us and when he bounces it up, I'm serious. When he out goes old school, it makes him look chunkier. He looks you know, he's done.

Speaker 1: No, it's god. He is definitely in better shape. And I looked at this this morning, just because now you can measure this stuff. Uh, he is running faster. Sprint speed is still not great, but it's twenty five point five feet per second. This year, there's twenty five feet per second last year. Last year he was in the bottom seven percent. This year he's in the twenty fourth percentiles. So that little difference. You know, he gets the third base the other day, that on that steal, you know, it's.

Speaker 7: Infect And the fact that he's in the fact that he's off his feet a lot, you know, not playing in left field.

Speaker 3: I think that's also a huge benefit to him. To listen, this is a man who is not a great defender.

Speaker 2: There's no there's no secret about it. He doesn't move great out there. But it also will help him. I think it will help his body. I mean, you have to stand out there and left field for one hundred and fifty games.

Speaker 2: So Ruben Tahada when he took that throw, he spun with his back to the play. So first of all, that was the dumbest thing in the world for him to receive the baseball and to spin backwards. He basically put his back to Chase Uttley as he was sliding into him. So he made himself vulnerable. I mean, that's his ball. Your job is to get out of the way. And they didn't even have that rule back there. But I mean that's why I thought Chase made a clean slide. Was it aggressive, of course it was, but he wasn't trying to hurt the guy. Now in this case, I mean Jeff McNeil when he dropped the ball, when he's tried to make that transfer, he stayed right.

Speaker 3: On the bag. I mean, get off the bag. It's very simple. You're vulnerable if you stay on the bag, so you protect yourself by getting off the bag. It's very very simple. And if you don't want to play in the infield and you don't want to take a hit every once in a while, then go play in the outfield.

Speaker 1: Well, I think you know Reese's uh, he can hit. He can great hitter. I think Reese's reaction probably told you a lot about how he feels about him. I feeling if it was anybody else, he probably would have done the waw cry baby hand gesture.

Speaker 4: And then they go after him the next day. Right, you're gonna go after him, go after him right early. I mean, don't wait till he hits you know, four as four hits a home run. I mean, you know, get him early and say, if you're gonna send a message, if I don't know, if you're gonna crowd him or bounce him off his hip, just get it over with early. Take it like a and go right at him.

Speaker 3: So the sad part about the game today is that pitchers don't even know how to do that. They don't even know how to send the message, and they don't know how to hit it. Like you can hit a guy on his hip, you can hit a guy in his like solar plexus or whatever. You can use the I mean, you don't have to hit the head. You don't have to.

But I was watching, uh, you know, one of the highlights shows last night, I guess on MLB networking. I was surprised a lot of empty seats in Baltimore. Man, what, that's a great team, and you know, they sell out opening day and then they're in the twenties the next two days. Yesterday on Easter. I know it is Easter, but on the final of that series, they there are twenty thousand people and then you know, ninety miles up the road in Philly, you know, it's forty four, forty four and forty two. You know, I guess on the positive Phillies fans is just amazing the way they support a winner. And oh my goodness, last year they had a great team and they're half full. It really surprised me.

Speaker 2: A little surprising for me too, because I mean they've been itching for a team. And the fact that now Angelo's is out of the picture. I think people are pretty happy about that too, God bless him. But I think, you know, the Angelo's family kind of wants to get out of there. And it was a Rubinstein. I think he was a guy that you know, people are excited about having be the owner. And I agree with you, Jim, because the Gambin Yards can be one of the most, if not the most exciting places to go watch baseball, especially with that team.

I mean the view from the mid level of citizens Bank Park, you know from the press Bach Hall of Fame club on clear that, you know, with the city skyscape is just I love Citizens Bank Park, but you know, I'm thinking of how electric it is. And you remember that famous Rob Thompson quote about one of the from an opponent that they vanquished in twenty twenty two said your stadium it's four hours of hell. My Rob never gave up who it is I want. I think it might be Snicker. He said that.

Speaker 1: He was asked about that on opening day Snicker. A couple of guys went over and asked him if he said that was like, what was so bad about it when you were here? And then he finally says, like everybody's I got my wife's babysitting and my grandkids are in school. Anyway, they wouldn't have come anyway. But he got asked about it on opening day.
