Venezuela over s Ball Championship, Howard Moves On and Texas over NC State Basketball. Tonight Prairie View against Lehigh, Miami Ohio against SMU. It's weird to have a play in game or first round, opening round, whatever we call it, and make it a must win situation. But it feels like that for Miami Ohio. It's like there was a lot of discourse about this team, how good they are, should they be in and here they are not very far from campus, less than an hour away from Miami and Oxford, Ohio playing in dayton tonight against SMU. Speaker 2: Yeah, it was a great atmosphere there. That's what you want. And you're watching Team USA and I know it's it's probably a big blanket to throw over this I don't know how much it meant to Team USA, Like this wasn't you know, the United States against Canada and hockey in that moment, it just felt like Venezuela. It meant everything to them. And I don't know if you can make somebody care more. I mean, Aaron Judge, Bryce Rp. I'm sure they wanted to win. By the way Aaron Judge getting roughed up on social media. They can't play big in the games there. But you know, it was just it was a good jump start to the season. That's the way I viewed this, a good jump start, and you know, you could take inventory and know who some of these players are or maybe attached to their countries as we move on. So I thought it was a really good couple of weeks for baseball. Now we go into a little more Spring training and then Opening days around the corner, there's going to be talk. John Smoltz yesterday was saying, hey, why don't we do this and have a final four at the All Star Game and then have a championship. You have the All Star Game and then you'll have Cooper's Town with the Hall of Fame induction ceremony. I get it, but I would rather let my players play in spring training than in the middle of the season. They want to play in the All Star Game. Okay, normally you'll get guys who play maybe just a couple innings. But we're trying to make it bigger than I think what it can be. And keep this in mind, the next WBC is in twenty thirty, so there's no real all next year or the year after that. You got the Olympics coming up as well, So this momentum that we have to now, let's do something different. Look, twenty thirty, that's a long way away. Yeah, so it doesn't happen next year, and then you're gonna have the Olympics coming up, and then I think it's twenty thirty the next time we have the WBC.

I mean, you had those guys sobbing, they're singing their country's anthem. They're getting their medals, although you could tell where Kyle Schwarber, Mason Miller, I think they got their silver medal and they're like, no, we're not. It's like, you know when they gave out Teddy Bears at the Olympics to Canada. You got these tough guys there and they give you a Teddy Bear. I go, nah, don't think we need to do Teddy bears. Yes, God, at least in Wimbledon. You know there's a trophy and there's a plate. Both of them are decent looking trophies. You want the you know, you don't want the plate. You want the trophy.

Speaker 2: And you have these moments. Bryce Harber had one of those moments last night where it's the two run homer to tie the game. But how many times have we seen these big moments get forgotten? Harper's moment will be forgotten. How about Jermaine Jermaine curse? In the Super Bowl against the Patriots Super Bowl forty nine, That unbelievable catch, Julio Jones's catch against the Patriots Super Bowl fifty one. RAJ Davis the Indians Game seven home run against the Cubs in the World Series. Kind of forgot about that as well. And then I mentioned Aaron Judge. So his struggles continue in big moments. Zero for four with three strikeouts last night. You go back to the twenty twenty four World Series where he batted two twenty two four for eighteen, seven strikeouts in five games against the Dodgers. I'll take him, you know, if you don't want him, I'll take him. I'm pretty good, certainly in the regular season, but stepping up in the moment. Bryce Harper had his moment last night with a two run homer. But Schwarven didn't do anything. I think he had four strikeouts or they like to say punch outs. And then Aaron Judge as well. But once again, we're not going to be playing for four more years with this format. And I think that's why everything that we have with this it's going to dissipate. Then we're gonna forget like man who won the last time. Oh yeah, venice A Wait, all that's right, but it's four more years, like Japan bows out, you know, now we start the regular season.

Okay, you're not coming in unless it's a save situation. You got to negotiate, you know, the Venezuela had to negotiate with the Cubs, you know, when their closer came in, Mason Miller with the padres and then you're negotiating, Hey, he can only come in in a save situation. How long are you going to be able to pitch?

Like I love the Four Nations, but I love that because the United States and Canada, you know that rivalry and you're dropping the gloves and you're fighting, and it really meant something there. You can't tell hockey guys to go. They take it easy. You know, Hey, he's only going to play four shifts tonight. That ain't happening. It's going to be Hey, we're playing, we're winning. Yeah, Pauline, it was interesting last night ninth innning. They need their best closer, Mason Miller and Mark de Rosa goes with Whitlock, the reliever out of Boston, I think, and clearly that's a second tier guy in compared to Mason Miller. Could you have gone the other way and said, I'm not coaching this team in four hours.

If it wasn't a safe situation, if it was reversed and it was the Mason Miller situation, he probably would have said, hey, I'm coming in because if you look at his teammates, look at how emotional they were like. This wasn't just a hey, this will be fun, this was oh my god, we got a chance to win, And I get the feeling. He probably would have said, Hey, I'll take the heat from the Cubs. I'm going to be in that game.

Speaker 7: See, I feel like, you know, looking ahead four years from now when you have Venezuela winning in Japan, United States and Dominican Republic underperforming. Those are built in storylines heading into that next one that are really great.

Speaker 2: But you don't know how many players who played in this year's WBC will be there in twenty thirty, Like you like to have that boy he's going to get a chance at redemption or you know, Aaron Judge, Kyle Schwarber probably won't be playing. Bryce Harper probably won't be playing in four years. But yeah, I mean it's disappointing that you can't capitalize on this because you had a moment. It was fun, enthusiasm, and I love the spirit of these other countries. You know, we get caught up in you know, play the game the right way and they you know, they celebrate differently, bat flips, all of that. It it meant more to them. The spirit of the game, the passion of the game was very, very evident. There's no room for that. Yeah, we can't what is what this excitement? Play the game the right way, you know, just run the bases and sit back down. I used to be I I used to be come on and then you I love passion. Now if you're down, you know, nine to one, and you hit a home run and you do a back flip, then you shouldn't be smacked.

But I wonder if they said to him, hey, by the way, we're going to be trading Jalen Waddle, just to let you know, and then maybe he would have said, well, maybe I'll go to Arizona instead. That's not the worst plan in the world to me.

Now you get that second chance, and you know, some of these guys who go to the second chance team or third chance team go in with a pretty good roster in place. You know, a chan are they going to keep him? You got two really good running backs in this year's draft. They're both are out of Notre Dame. So you might have somebody who was willing to to give you something for a champ who's a very talented running back. All right, we'll talk a little bit more about that with Nick Wright next hour. Your phone calls are welcome, and how often should the WBC be played? You guys, I think we're surprised when I said it doesn't happen until twenty thirty. And let's face it, if you didn't have that moment, that seminal moment when Otani struck out Mike Trout, I mean, that's what we remember from twenty twenty three. That's the last one, but that's when we were like, oh my god, that's what we want to see. You saw two of the greatest players and they were going head to head and you had the championship on the line, and it was Otani's big moment and he strikes out Bryce Harper. That's all we remember from that WBC. But it was enough that it was like, okay, man, the rivalries create new rivalries, and it goes away and then all of a sudden it comes back. Now we have to wait till twenty thirty, and it might you know, some of the luster are taken away because we're gonna have the Olympics as well in between.

Because of COVID, they skipped a turn, went to twenty twenty three, which you just talked about, and because of COVID they cut it to three to twenty twenty six. Now they're going back to four.

You know, it's just like March Madness or college football playoffs, like we want more. I think this was a great couple of weeks and you know we got this see you know, we have to see talent around the world, and you know this might spark the United States to be a little more all in next time around.

If there wasn't a team in Miami and you saw the WBC, the first thing MLB would do is, man, they should put a team in Miami. This place would be rocking every single night. And it's just not the case. They're the most irrelevant franchise in MLB.

Man, it has turned into something wild. But this talk about how they need to break it up and do at at different times to help the MLB players, that is garbage. Man, I don't even want to hear. It's the weakest argument around. If you're gonna show up and put it on the jersey, then show up and play. If you can't play, then don't even show up at all. The reason Venezuela one last night were two reasons. One, everybody on that team, coaching staff, players to fans were fully invested in that game and they wanted it more.

And secondly, it wasn't a pitching I mean, schools should have started that game and Miller at the end for sure, But when you have your three through seven hitters, including a pinch hitter, go all for seventeen, that is on them, man, that's on them. Hey, I'm all about it. Let it go every four years, it's cool, but show up and play and represent the way Venezuela did. It was tough to watch, but that celebration was amazing when everybody when they announced champions, everybody ran to the stage fully invested. Man, that's what it takes. Y'all. You look at the Europeans and how how fired up they get, how team they much the team means to them, and then you look at our guys and they're so near near that way, and I just wonder if it's something systemic, you know, on how our golfers and our baseball players and raised with the best you know, equipment and fields and all that, or if it's an entitlement kind of a thing. But I'll just be interested in your comment on that.

Speaker 2: Yeah, it might be just more individual in the United States, whereas these golfers in Europe they'll end up, you know, traveling together, sharing a room together. They grew up in that atmosphere, and so I think there's more of a knowing each other instead of all of a sudden you know, you got Phil Micholson and Tiger Woods who don't like each other, and then we're gonna pair them together. You know, Europe has surpassed us, and it comes down to I think that camaraderie. I don't know if they're better players, but the camaraderie is evident there. And with these countries, I mean Venezuela, with everything that Venezuela has been through, and they came together. You could see it, and that that's what was fun about that. A collective.

But I'm just saying, you know, it's a smaller group to pick from, but it's a stronger group I think when you put them on the field of what they're playing for, and you saw that Venezuela was playing for more than the WBC. And that made me think about some of the other catchphrases. Obviously the whiff, yeah, but do you have any other catchphrases that are top of list for you?

And I think the first time I used it was a guy named Benny di Stefano and I think he played for the Astros at the time, and Benny di Stefano hit a triple or something, and you know he's running the bases, and you can't stop Benny di Stefano. You're gonna hope to contain him. In Fuego was always fun. The whiff for a strikeout. But I think the phrase you're talking about softest church music might have been the comment that I made, and that was actually from an old SEC announcer who would talk about I think somebody's jump shot or something was his softest church music.
