Speaker 1: So I was going to mention how we have our resident second base from Jason Kipness for the day here for a couple hours. He's also our resident restaurant tour and I was going to tell you how I think you probably should have invested in this other industry called baseball teams. I was curious to just get your quick hit or thought, as you are a businessman and entrepreneur, what about the padres selling for three point nine billion dollars, which smashes the record two point four to two for the I can't win a game Mets, But the Forbes report had them at three point one bill, which was fifty nine percent above the year before. So basically stock soared right and in twenty twelve they bought him for I think it was like eight hundred mil. I'm going to butcher the number, but it was nothing close to what it is now. So just wanted to get your thoughts on how that all went down, as I did spend a lot of time last night going through their books for some reason. I was on a flight for a while and just looked and I was like, wait a second. A lot of people that are saying, oh, they just got bought for much higher price because they're in California. Are forgetting that. Places like Forbes don't like up the value BA. They just are up to upping the value based on what is their reported public revenue. I know that you can't see all the books behind, but you can see a lot in terms of attendance and TV money. Their local TV money is almost nothing. So anyway, long story short, if I bought the team KIP, I'd be like, oh damn, twenty twenty nine, you're gonna suddenly get like two hundred million in local media money when they package it all together.

Speaker 2: Side story, before I even answer that I once I retired, I actually did try to become a part owner in a team. I will not mention there was. It's it's a it's a big money, big market game. There are multiple commas that are needed to get in it. It is people with a lot more money than I have or made in my career. These are big boy checks being written by a lot of guys who just are throwing around money. It is a about as safe of a owner's If you're not, they're not losing money. I'll put it that way. Just by owning the team inflation. Uh, TV deals, everything that goes into it, everybody who may puts money into a ownership, they're gonna they're gonna be coming out with a profit, uh ten, fifteen, twenty years, however, however long they they keep it, so in forty years or whatever. If you have this, if this show is still going, you're gonna have the same conversation about whoever buys the Padres and that number is gonna be double whatever it is right now.

It's yeah, and immediately snaps you out of it and you're like, hmm, I shouldn't have done that.

But obviously like those they they know you so well and they know how to break you so fast out of it as your your teammates and brothers there that it's like I was still able to tell a joke. Uh, they were able to tell jokes to me. I think I picked up Ryan. I picked up Ryan Rayburn's bat one time and it was just like it looked like someone had already bashed something with it, like it was splintering. It was terrible. And he like calls me out and he's like, hey, next time you pick up a bat, He's like, how about you not use my gamer? And I'm like in the middle of like a hulk rage and I was like, ew, this is your gamer. Like we all just started laughing, all the people down there, and so it's good to have a sense of humor. It's bad to touch anybody else's. So if anybody is watching and you're playing, only use your stuff and make sure you're not by anybody. You can't hurt anybody, and you don't hurt yourself.

And uh what the potteries at one eleven last twelve, I mean, tied with the dog is right now, and he's just gonna boost that team up. And I think they needed some depth there. If they didn't have that depth, I think they might have made away this this nice boost for him. Now we'll see how long it'll take Giliano and get ready, it certainly didn't take Patrick Corbulong.

Speaker 3: And this is a great fit for him, not only because he's in he would be in the big leagues, but the fact that the bullpen shortens games. He doesn't need to go to a place where he needs to throw six or seven innings. He can throw four or five or even is there plans to maybe drop him into more of like a three or four inning roll and get him back a week or two earlier or is it just still brand new news.

Speaker 4: I still think it needed to have him go on to rehab assignment, you know, in a at least for a few starts. Now, you know, Corban Baga, Corbman came back after one after missing all the spring training, and he's looked great for the Blue Jays, going along four or five innings. But you know, at least he's a nice example. But we've also seen the other way too, where guys Partokul, the pitchers who miss all spring training struggle. So we'll see what happens. But it's a nice depth at the back end there for sure.

It's not even official yet as far as we know. They have to get approved by the rest of the owners. But you know, how do you think this group can impact San Diego. It's a Padre's fan base that is used to this kind of activity. When we had the late great Peter Sidler running the franchise, Yeah.

Speaker 4: I'm under siler. I mean, they spent money wildly and they had the third biggest payroll in baseball and it paid off. The last two years they watched their budget, and they had a cut payroll just to add some guys on, signing guys to mildly contracts, cheap contracts like Marquez at Basquez and going from there. And uh, at least now you've got to proven commoditie and uh, they're gonna give the Dodgers everything they can handle. Uh. You know a year ago, you thought, Okay, at some point they're gonna have to trade for Nano Tatis because this contract is movable all but sun and it's like, forget that, keep building on and you know, white white, can't this be the year someone knocks out the Dodgers.

Speaker 3: Is it a thing that the Padres could say they're just too tough to knock off and just ride it out to the playoffs, Not that anybody can just ride it out, but is there a focus where the Padres could potentially make another move And I'm not talking about like Lucas Giolito is not a small small move, but a smaller move where they could still move a Tatis for that big piece that would solidify them pushing all in for this year and the next few years.

Speaker 4: No, I think Tatis is there now, particularly new ownership. I'd be surprised if they even listened to many calls in the winter. He's certainly not going anywhere. Now, you know, the big thing is, Okay, do they make some more moves and and get better outfielder? Uh, you know for the stretch run. So I mean, people are in San Diego excited, uh, you know, and the Dodgers are just running away with this scene. Two weeks ago, all of a sudden, the Dogs are hit by injuries, massive injury to Edwin Diaz, and this thing is wide opened. And the bullpen, you know, even though you know, besides Mason Miller has been lights out, but now you get this kind of pitching depth now helping them go a little deeper in games and save that bullpen.

Speaker 1: Do you feel like the rest of the world forgets that, Bob? I mean, last year, the Padres gave the Dodgers a pretty good run late into the season, and the Dodgers didn't even end up with one of the buys, one of the top two seeds in the National League. You just think back, and as history gets murkier, people just think they ran through the league for two years.

They could have got easily got beat by the Phillies that first round on Basil rookie has a throwing year or also going to have Game five in Philadelphia, should have got beat by the potteris two years ago. Pottery has had him down two to one Game four at Pecko with the Dodgers having a bullpen game and no Freddie Freeman, so they could have been beat a couple of times. So I think the potter's think, Okay, here here's our chance, you know, more than an older team with the Dodgers, uh, you know they're starting to get up in age two. Let's see what happens. But I think, uh, I think it'd be a huge series in May. I know it's only May, but when the Dodgers visit the Potres, I think those fans will go ballistic waiting for it to happen.

Speaker 2: Bob, you hinted down a little bit. What are the realistic expectations for Gilito a little bit? How high of an expectation can you have for someone who he wasn't signed in the offseason, and so if no team's really signed him or believed in him, then he really have such a high for him when you sign him later in the year.

Speaker 4: Yeah, actually right, Jason. I mean a lot of teams could have used them. I mean Atlanta thought he couldn't help them. They never even got to the point of negotiations. Uh, you know, Chicago could use their starter, you know, they didn't, you know, pull the trigger on them. So I think, you know, if he can pitch four or five, maybe six innings towards the end, you know, by second half of the year, I think that's good for them. I think, you know, how long can marquezki pitching like this? They've had the lights out performances and now, you know it give us more time to to Joe Mushgrove to get him right. Obviously, Darbus should be out all year, so I think it's much needed. And if he can return to being the guy he wasn't second half, he'd be great to have for the stretch run and uh, you know, give them a realistic chance to go deep in the playoffs, a cover rules run.

Speaker 3: Like you said, it was the Padres and the Cubs. What we originally heard maybe the Braves, you know, I kind of help throw that in there. But since we heard about the Padres for a while, here was this ownership change delaying them, making this move was there like a I mean it's April, so there's not much of a freeze. I mean, not many moves rarely made, But was there kind of a freeze like, Hey, let's make sure we get this new group in before we make any kind of sweeping decisions on this.

Speaker 4: I mean they were in on guys, but had to be their price. Remember they were in Merrill Kelly. It was all big deferred money. They running Zach Gallon was differring a ton of money. They shouldn't have the present day money to do it, but you got to think there's some kind of correlation with the new ownership group kind of given the nod like, Okay, we can add onto the payroll in twenty twenty six. Let's not worry about, you know, the deferred payments. We can do it now. So I think just this gives them the stamp of approval that, hey, go ahead and do this thing, and let's be honest, if they can have a nice run and get to the role series, that ownership is going to make a whole lot of money. Wrap the bat. The first year.

They've won seven games in a row, Kip, what are you seeing it? It seems kind of quiet nationwide that the Cubs are going on this run. I think part of it has to do with some of the other big money, big market teams looking so damn bad. I mean, some have been fine, some have been terrible. We've talked almost every day right now about you know, the Mets and the Phillies, and a little bit about a slow start for the Blue Jays. Astro is not looking good. Cubs look really good right now, and they're missing quite a bit of pitching.

Speaker 2: They are missing quite a bit of pitching with Kate Horn going down and some of these other guys. I think Boyd's coming back here shortly. So I do obviously marquee with them a couple times right before this win streak. Their problems were they were not hitting with runners on scoring position. They were one for thirty I think for a series. So that was the problem. The silver lining through it all was is that they were still creating opportunities. They were still getting guys on base, they just were not cashing it in. Now, to combine with that, good pitching a little bit, you're starting to see this offense cash them all in and that's how this win streaks kind of come out to be. Starting pitching's been there. I think with these this Cubs lineup. Some of these big market teams where you might have a Judge or a Harper and schwarbur in the middle of these lineups, it's like there's no huge names on the starting rotation or in this lineup, but this is one of the deepest lineups in the league where it's a one through nine. These guys create opportunities. They get on base, they all can hit doubles in the gap, and they could all run a little bit that they can attack you from different ways. So this Cubs team is a good team, and I think as they get going and start to get better with runners in scoring position, you're going to see some long streaks like this happen.

Speaker 3: I think one of the things that this team has done, and you see it in all of their long term extensions, they've paid for defense, and somebody will be like, Wow, you could have had Kyle Tucker. You know, he's he I'm not saying he's bad on defense, but they elected not to spend that extra money on offense, and they locked up Nico Horner, they locked up PCA even before these guys. They came and gave Jason Hayward a ton of money. They win a World Series with that, and that was a defensive move. The model for the Cubs is to play good defense. And if you watch just this Phillies, this Phillies series, I mean Bregman's making a few good plays at third. Matt Shaw played third last night. He made a couple good plays. They you build up your pitching staff when guys make plays behind you. I know that sounds I know that sounds very elementary. But when you have golden left, you have golden center, you have gold at second. I'm not sure if Dansby has a gold glove or not, but I know Bregman has a goal glove at third. So you sit there and you go, yes, this pitching staff doesn't have the big names. Even though Matthew Boyd started out hot striking a lot of guys out. It's so much easier for pitchers to allow the other team to hit the ball and put it in play, especially in April in Chicago when the win's not blown out. But it's easier to pitch and to be effective. If you can let guys put the ball in play here, hit it, we'll make the out. If you don't, that's okay, you'll hit the next one, we'll get two outs on the next play, or we'll like that's and it seems to me that's how the Cubs are pitching right now, and that gives you more confidence, which ultimately puts hitters in bad counts, which ultimately help you get more strikeouts. So it's like they're playing a very good team style, but it's the team that they built. They built this with intention, and it's working out for him right now.

I think early on, I think even with teams that have the same rosters returning, it takes there's a different storyline to each year, and there's a different way to find your mo of that year and your identity. I think the Cubs early on, right now, I think they're one of the first teams to find their identity and to find what they're good at and how they do it. Because they've already had injuries, so they've had guys and a next man up kind of mentality already. But I think Shoda and Cabrera at the top of the rotation have done great. Boyd coming back now he's been mister consistent. Colin Ray doesn't get enough love, I think on the national news just because he's not flashy. But if you go look at last year and this year so far, the guy's numbers are about as consistently as you want, and he's probably only considered he'd be considered number five starter on most teams, and he's been pitching like a three year better for a while. Now. They're just solid. They really are solid, and especially like Kratz said, when you have a defense behind him that they do, just throw strikes, don't be scared to put the ball in play or have it put in play. Don't don't shoot yourself in the foot by walking guys and getting them on base and giving these big Indians when you've got that defense behind you.

Speaker 1: And I think that's the case with the Cubs. I mean, you tell me Kip that there's definitely some swing and miss that's going to be missing from this team right now with Palencia out, they lost Porter Hodge for the year. Like those are their big swing and miss guys. I'm sure I'm missing some, you know, bullpen wise, Hunter Harvey can get some swing and miss with his stuff. He's been out too, so they're missing a lot of their strikeout punch. But yet you can just rely on the defense. Last night was a really good example of that. I think the league miscalculated on show to him Naga. I think you know, Imanaga kind of looked and said, hey, you know what, I don't think there's going to be enough out there. And he took the qualifying offer and that's great. I mean, that's a very good number, but usually that means the agent called around and said, hey, I don't think you're going to get more than this from the league, so we should take it. And Monaga is awesome. The first year. Last year it seemed like he might have been hurt a little bit and went through threw some ups and downs. But I mean he looks like, you know, a very good starter again for this team, and it's been swinging miss up until yester. I think he had one punch out in the seven innings that he put together and just was getting more weak contact. But he's been awesome.

Speaker 2: Yeah, the start before that, he went like six innings, no hits, a nine K. So it's like he again. They don't have these huge superstar in names that you would probably attached to a Cubs roster or to a big city market like that, but they have a bunch of solid players and PCA hasn't even gotten going yet. That's the fun part too. For the offensive side, he's he's kind of in a little bit of a struggle gaining his feet under him this year. But I mean, if he gets going again anywhere remotely close to what he did last year, you already know what you got. With the base running, the defense, he's arguably the best defensive center fielder in the game right now. With how much ground he covers, he he he has ways to contribute to games even if he does doesn't hit. So I love the way he plays the game, but they would they will see a huge boost if they can get his back going as well.

Speaker 2: I just really do like the depth of it. It's one of those ones where it's like you can watch a Yankees game, you can watch some of these other teams and you know they're top heavy. You know what do they say? You know you can go to the bathroom on certain Indians where it's like, oh, I'm not missing these at bats. I just really like the Cubs lineup with how deep it is one through nine, where it's like you got guys in seven, eight, nine holes who are are hitting for high average or have high end basins and turn the lineup over to Nico at the top, who's been unreal this year so far. But it's just the every single one through the order can is contributing. And I think that makes when you don't give that starting pitcher a break at all, when he doesn't when he's on the mount, he's like, now this guy's up. Now this guy's like I'm like where is my like automatic out, like it's not coming. Then that's just a that's a hard lineup. So I wouldn't. I would always like the Cubs, and especially because I think the been smart with the way they've spent their money to I think they're missing pieces then now maybe save your money and go get some pitching maybe, But other than that, they're they're going to be as competitive as you want Uh, they're just they're not You're not scared of anybody, but you're definitely not excited to play them either.

Speaker 2: Yeah, what a weird sent to say right now, But that's it's weird say they're good enough to beat those teams and they're not going to be the team when when good teams like Mets and Phillies are down, it is very smart and you have to be good enough to not let them up. Do not be the team that wakes them up, and do not be the team that kind of gets those big big boys going again. And and so they took care of business. You're supposed to be the guys who aren't playing well, and they did. You can't blame them for that. Play the game in front of you.

Speaker 3: Right now, the best thing that's happening, which hasn't happened for the last like ten years. Here. The Flyers are winning, the Flyers are playing well, and the Sixers are actually in the playoffs. Nobody thinks they're going to do well, and it really has sheltered them a little bit. But also the expectation here in Philly, and I heard it all last year, was I don't really care what they do in the regular season. I don't really care because if this team doesn't know how to make an adjustment in the postseason there, I don't even want to watch the entire season. So now all those people are kind of mum like, oh, it was kind of nice when they were winning last year in the regular season, and so they're they're They're not the first ones on the talk rate on talk radio to to be to jump in and be like, oh man, they're cooked, because they're the same people who are saying they were cooked last year and they had an eight game lead in the division. Oh they'll make the playoffs. Well, now they stayed there. They're the worst. Now they're all like, oh crap, this team actually is not doing well. And it's I said it yesterday, I'll say it again because I watched part of the game last night. It was I mean, I get it. Harper hit a hit a dinger late in the game, and they had a chance with Trey Turner up with second and third, down by three, but had a chance for what like a three run homer Like those don't come around often. It just is something that most of the lineup is isn't out, and unfortunately it's like a quick out for the Phillies. I think the average is like one hundred and sixty three pitches a game, and I think the Phillies are seeing like one hundred and forty pitches a game. Like it's it's like take strike one, swing it the next pitch and put it in play weekly. So it's something that this offense needs to figure out. I get the pitchings eer isn't great, but this is an offensive thing and they need to They need to turn it around quick. It's it's getting laid early.

This is when you really need to put emphasis. Then, if you're the Braves or any teams like that, where you see these other teams, you're like, hey, because we know baseball's a game of averages, it's going to even itself out. There's going to be a losing streak down the road for the Braves, and there's gonna be some winning streaks for Phillies and stuff like that. Take advantage of this now when they're not playing well and you're playing well. You try to win every game already, but really put the emphasis on on the each day.

I'm going to raise it here, so I used to hold it right there. I was trying to I don't know whether just to make changes so I could get better. I wasn't hitting for high enough average, and I dropped my pinky down here a little bit or to like even, and that started to put pressure on the handmaid that was not used to it. Like my hands were formed for my regular swing and now I'd switched to that. And if anybody doesn't know, if it looks at us scan, the handmaid's almost like a hook and rate where this line is the knuckle, that's where it cracks, and they basically just saw it straight off. You don't really need it. So that's what happens for the surgery, and it takes a little time to get back power, takes a little time to get back comfort, and it's just annoying. It's not a painful process after the surgery's done by any means. It's just rhythm and kind of re strengthening the muscles in your hand to kind of go back to where they were because you're not allowed to use it for a while when it's in a cast or anything like that. But he's so young that I don't think it's going to be It's just gonna be a blip in the raidar because I still think he's a good player, and I still think he will to make his way back up and be a good major leaguer. But I think it's just frustrating because he was already struggling a little bit. He was already going through where I was called up and I had this big title and I want to be in the big leagues, and now I'm back down struggling, and then I get hurt too, And like you see at the bottom of the screen, where injuries just suck, they really do.

You have Devin Williams imploding in the ninth inning and not being able to throw strikes when needed. You have the Twins admin rolling the team after the game talking about things you can get in dozens, and there are many more storylines, but let's start there, as it's not just losing. It is like grind it in losing.

By the way, just nailed his last name twice. This is part of the game and it's fun and I like it. And that's again I said earlier that they are a good team or could be a good team. It's because you see their payroll and you see some of their big names and on the team, and you're you're you're assuming that they should be good and it's just it's like it's the Murphy's Lots, Like anything that can go wrong will go wrong right now for them. So it's they can't get out of their own way a little bit. And it is a long season. But like I said, you can't win the division in April and May, but you certainly can lose it. And they are they gotta they gotta mix it up, You gotta try something different, like they're just it's like the same stuff over and over with them.

But you said, you have to assume because they have a high payroll that they're gonna be good like And you know what assuming does makes an ass out of you and me. And right now they're making an ass out of the fact that this roster is not playing well together. Who constructed the roster one of the guys that I respect in the game. I feel what he has done, what he did with the Brewers, right now, something is missing for it to be successful with the Mets and Mets Twitter hated the Twins about three weeks ago. Last year, Mets Twitter hated me, so I feel you with all that stuff, but really the ire of the Mets fans needs to be on the players on the field. And if you think Wan Soto going zero for two tonight with two walks is going to be a bad night, because you're gonna boo him when he when he gets out the second time, probably a rocket to the right fielder. Like, that's not the answer. The answer is this team has a roster issue that is not comfortable, and the story hasn't changed. The story hasn't changed from last year when we questioned the different signings that now they're not even you know, some of those guys aren't even playing. The roster issue that the fact that they left a spot open for Carson Bench who had that nice home run early. It's time to make a change with guys who aren't doing well. The issue is most of the lineup's not doing well. So are the Mets able to reverse course? Not slowly change direction? They have to reverse course, they have to go in a different direction. They're supposed to be an athletic team, but you have guys and Kip you changed positions. I was fortunate I played one position my whole career. You changed positions. To me, when so many guys on the offensive side are changing positions, and it's it leaks into your offense because I don't think those guys are necessarily hurting them one hundred percent on defense, but it just leaks into your offense and guys are just questioning. From Juan Soto being in left field, it hasn't affected him. He was hurt, but he was a right fielder for the last few years. Then you have Boba Shed at third base. Then you have Francisco Lindoor learning a new third baseman, a new second baseman, Marcus Simeon, I get it, gold Glover, but he's not hitting. So you have Mark Vientos who came up as a third baseman, even if for the last few years you've said, oh, we're going to transition him to first base. That's why we're not resigning Pete. We're not giving Pete all that money. He's still learning a new position. And you have a third baseman on your roster in Brent Bady, who's been taking balls in right field because you're a right fielder. Young prospect hasn't hit very well once he came up to the big leagues and that's okay, that happens, but they need to reverse course if they want to save this season.

Speaker 2: They do it does so when you speak about leaking into your hitting, it's because a lot of times when you're learning new position. When I'm speaking off of my personal experience, I went from infield to out for like twenty five games to finish off the season, you're your pregame routine is thrown off because your pregame routine now is spent taking extra reps at the new position to get you ready for the game. And you might have normally been in the cage hitting during that time, and so you're not trading on the offensive side. But at some point, these guys are professionals, and they're good enough, they have big names, then they should be good enough to figure it out to at some point put the foot down and just be like, hey, it is what it is. Let's go out with what we have to say, and let's go win a damn ball game. I mean, you have to play some winning baseball. You might not be able to make every play. You can't. Guys have won games with airs like I've Teams have won games before with making a couple of airs. That's okay. It shouldn't be the reason you lose the game. It doesn't help, but it doesn't mean you can't win the game because you have some people out of position who might not have made a play that's normally made. What else are you doing to win the ballgame? If you got to play winning baseball? I mean, there is part of me it's like playing in Cleveland all my years. Part of me like seeing a big market with the biggest payroll team not win just because I was like, okay, good, can't you can't just buy wins? See, it does take winning baseball. So I do like that part. But at some point, it's like, you want to see these guys who are better than this that are just underperforming. But it's just because, like you said, they're not playing as a team and they're not playing winning baseball, clearly because they're not winning games, but it's are you when stuff's going wrong? Are you taking care of the little things? And it doesn't seem like they are.

I think part of what gets so much respect for the broadcast team for the Mets for years is that they kind of relate to the fan that's watching the game. They're not going to sugarcoat as much when it's bad. They're going to point out what's bad and make you sound smarter for saying how bad it looks. They're not just going to be like, oh, it's okay, you know there's more minor league prospects coming whatever. Like when they stink, they crush them, and when they're great, they praise them. So let's go over two examples, go whichever direction you want to go. Darling pointed to and at bat from Semion when it was two oh, and it goes to the bigger discussion of them chasing pitches and saying, sometimes you got to just take the pitches outside the zone, try not to be a hero. That sounds like more of your classic line. The one I got about mclan I thought was fascinating. Mclan is certainly not the problem. He's one of the only pluses right now for the team. But he's gotten hit as he's gotten deeper into his outings. Okay, that happens with most starters as you get to the third or fourth time through in order. What did you think specifically about the Buyron Buxton at bat. Did you feel like he went inside and then apologize. Some people online were saying, no, he was saying that to the catcher. I'm like, why would he Why would he say that to the catcher who gives a shit?

I'm not saying you have to be a jerk. I'm not saying you have to like stare at Byron Buckston and be like yeah, that's what I'm talking about. But I think Ron Darling was spot on. But I also know that Noel mcclan i don't know Nolan mclan that might not be his temperament. He might be totally fine, Like he's going back to back or two outings this year. He hasn't given up. He's been perfect through five. So he's elite and dominant, and maybe he doesn't need to have that like bulldog mentality. I'm not trying to make everybody into some type of eighties and early nineties pitcher. Like Ron Darling said it the way that I would have agreed that you don't give You don't give the you don't give the hitter any advantage. Ever, I don't care if it's the first pitch of the game or it's your ninetieth pitch of the game. You don't give him an advantage. And you definitely don't be like, hey, I wasn't trying to hit you right there. Maybe after you hit him you say it like that's your personal personality, but in that moment, you like as a hitter, you're like, Okay, that was kind of uncomfortable seeing ninety seven up at my up in my grill, but he said sorry, so I'm back and I'm leaning out over the plate. I don't know any hitters that are like, I'm actually better when I'm pulling off the ball and thinking everything's in. No, like, hitters are better when you can stay out over the plate, especially on Nolan McClain, who's going to throw that slider and I think he threw a cutter next pitch and you know it wasn't It didn't moving him back, didn't do what you would think it would be based on what happened on the next pitch that kind of stayed flat on the outer half and Buxton clipped him.

You are then not locked in. It shows me that you're more worried about like the guy's feelings instead of getting him out. You don't have to be a dick about it, but just your main focus to be getting him out. So I think Ron Darling was spot on it. Actually I applauded that one. I like that a lot.

But Brazabon lets up the tying run and then later on Devin Williams just completely unravels, and then of course you have the uproar that he can't handle New York City. John Harper, who covers the teams on SNY all the time, said, Devin Williams looks exactly like he did early last season in the Bronx, like the stage is too big for him. Upon signing him, David Stearns tried to say, if you looked at the numbers, Williams was unlucky last year. If you watched, you knew it was more than that. Sokrats, I'm curious. I mean he had I think it was five, yeah, five scoreless outings, and now he's had three messy outings. Now the first five outings. I mean I've watched every appearance for him. Maybe one was clean, Yeah, I'm seeing one that looks clean. The rest of them, you know, wawk hit whatever right, so that they're not clean. There's not many relievers who do that right. It's not like you're watching Mason Miller just one two, three strikeout, looking just dominate like that. So that's okay, But then you run into a rut at the same time as the team going through in aally terrible time. This is the one part I will give John Harper, you know, credit for, because I've seen this too last year. At times you're looking at Devin Williams when he was struggling early in the season, You're like, his stuff looks fine. So when his stuff looks okay, then it becomes more of a location question. Whether he's losing the zone or the command is a fastball laid up over the center of the play. Whatever it is, That to me is when you do start to question if there is a big city, big market pressure feeling. He admitted to that recently from last year. When you say that it's great, we want to hear it from you, but that to me means that it might pop up in your head again.

Speaker 3: See, I have a tough time when people talk about the big market like, because I just don't. I don't. I've seen New York when it's packed and you're playing the Red Sox down the stretch. I've seen New York during COVID and there ain't nobody there. I didn't feel any different pressure in those games, and I did with tons of in the stands and zero fans in the stands Like that's you, I know. And that's so that's where I have a tough time. Yes, I remember what Devin Williams said that it got fast for him early, that it was something he had adjust to. Maybe that's just more of the like coming to him from the ballpark. It's tough to get to Yankee Stadium for a day game through traffic, It's tough to find a place to live like it's a do you want a guy to settle in? Yes, I promise fans, if you keep booing Devin Williams, he's not going to become a better player. It might make you feel better, but he's not going to become a better player. And if and if people say, well, every time I watch him, he's you know, he's always walking a ton of guys. He's always running a tightrope. I would say, that's what your memory is. And the fact that he throws that bugs bunny change up that. Yes, there's gonna be his game relies on that chase. But you look at his career and he's got just above a one whip. So he's gonna let one runner on because he only pitches one inning. So he's gonna get one runner on, and he's going to to me. I think one of his biggest issues is as a closer. You want your guy to be able to go two days in a row. You want your guy to I guess nobody goes three days in a row. But now under this contract, I'm gonna need you too, because the Mets need all the wins they can. I think his pitch efficiency, well, it may not show up in a stat book like last night's outing where he didn't get any outs, but his pitch efficiency just doesn't seem like it's Even when I watched him with the Brewers, it was like, you know, you're having a twenty six twenty seven pitch outing. Now we can throw you tomorrow, but no shot you can throw a third day. So I think there's I think there's some of that that I think gets in the way of fans of the Mets, gotten away of fans of the Brewers, gotten away of Yankee fans last year view of what Devin Williams is. But his whip is right there with a lot of other guys. He's not Mayron Navera, and he's not Mason Miller from the first month of the year, Like, let's pump your brakes, make sure you're comparing apples to apples.
