You were just gotten traded over for from the Angels for h Andleton Simmons, and they said, hey, you got to come catch this. We got this guy in of trade. We're super excited about it. You got to come catch him. In the bullpen. It was raining, So I'm in this bullpen. It's a cage. You know, they got the nets and everywhere. He didn't throw a strike like it was not It was not even closer.

Speaker 6: So I so after he gets done, I go to the I think Roger was that Roger McDowell was our pitching coach. I go Roger Man, that wasn't very good. He goes he was nervous. I said, was he nervous about it. He goes, well, I asked him that, Roger says. I asked Sean why he was So he goes on, I'm throwing to the big league catcher, and Rogers says, I looked at Sean and and go, well, if you make the big leagues, you're going to be throwing to the big league catcher.

I couldn't even throw the ball back because you have to throw it like this eye. So I was like rolling at backstep right. Yeah, anyways, but you've gone on to have a trimnut screw. You obviously had a nice one of the braves. You've been to a bunch of teams. Now, what did the White Sox say to you? Said you want to eat innings. What's your role going to be. Are you gonna be a starter A You're going to be a bulk guy in the middle, a lead inning guy because you've kind of done a bunch of different things now throughout your career.

Speaker 5: Yeah, the goal is to start and you know, just get to that, you know, the most inning is possible, and kind of continue what I was.

I know they do have some young guys coming up starter wise, but just for me where I'm at my career, getting you know, getting some starts in hopefully as many as possible up to thirty and just kind of taking that next step building on what I did last year is my main goal. And I've also been in, you know with the A's a little bit here the past few years.

Speaker 9: What does that look like building your innings up? You had ninety two last year. Obviously, you haven't eclipsed a one hundreds since your first two years in the big leaues.

Speaker 9: Because no player and maybe you can tell me if I'm wrong, but no player goes in the off seat. Is like, you know, if I just have a mediocre first half, like you're working out and you're like, dude, I'm gonna kill it the first half. I'm probably gonna make the All Star team. I got fifteen starts under my belt. What does that look like in the sense of like, oh man, I want to get thirty starts, but I haven't done that in a bit where you know you're gonna go into uncharted territory. And what kind of conversations does the team have about that? Are they like, yeah, we'll take thirty starts, but we'll trade you halfway through the year.

Speaker 5: Yeah, it's definitely, you know, one of those things you're thinking about, just the reality of the situation, how it kind of pans out.

Speaker 5: In my mind, going from ninety or so innings and getting towards like one fifty doesn't sound that crazy, just because in my mind I've always been, you know, a starter and all that kind of stuff obviously, just haven't done it, and that's kind of that's where we lean on the off season prep thee strength and conditioning, all that kind of stuff.

Speaker 5: The way I've been pitching, especially last year, it's been a lot less stressful. Finally, kind of flipping it from when I used to throw to AJ and throwing a lot more strikes and keeping things in the zone and.

Speaker 6: Yeah, strikes are each show. I'm gonna give you some old man of ice. Strikes are always good, Okay, no matter what, even if they hit him out of the park, they're still better than walks. I promise you. Nobody, nobody on earth has ever really yeah, exactly, you're right, what third or thirty two years old? I think when I saw your like twenty five, twenty three, twenty four, So we're a little bit we've grown up in our old age. Okay, So I'm proud of you. How much you're looking forward to the White Sox. Okay, like you said, you've said, they've kind of said they're gonna give you an opportunity to do this. This will be really is gonna This is probably gonna be like your real first time where you know your role going to spring training. How much are you looking forward to that being the veteran one of the veteran guys on the staff.

Speaker 5: Yeah, it's kind of been been looking for it for a while, you know. I think in the Braves seventeen eighteen, I was starting to get rolling and then kind of just hit some speed mumps and never got to do that where I was sewing up in.

Speaker 5: To just kind of have to worry about that, just going and knowing I'm going to be working with these guys for the full year. I'm pretty familiar with some of the younger dudes. They have some young pictures from the mass Boston area where I'm from, so Shane Smith, Mike Vassel, I know them pretty well. Got a you know, an old Angels Pitcheon coach that's the Bullbend coach now, Matt Wise. So there's some familiar faces that will help get it going. And then I spent some time with the Cubs, so I loved Chicago and that was kind of one of the appeals looking at.

Speaker 5: That I was familiar with, and then again similar situation to being the older guy again after I was that the past couple of years and just looking forward to getting going with a young group.

Speaker 9: Can you explain to us as a free agency process because normally there's not just one team. When a guy gets a big league deal, it's not quite the same offer, but everybody's you know, people will say, well, why did you choose the White Sox over you just talked about the Cubs too, like what is that?

Speaker 9: What did you prioritize when teams were coming after you? Because we all know there's collusion and the numbers are all the same, but each situation is completely different.

Speaker 5: Yeah, that was that was the tough part, was kind of going through the situations and seeing, you know, the reality of them. Maybe it's like, say, if I were to sign back in Boston and the starters that they do have and all those different kind of things, just where you fall in the debt chart. And that was the biggest thing I think, was looking just for opportunity to kind of you know, build on the ninety two innings last year, and you know, like you said before, trying to get to those thirty starts and everything. That was the main goal obviously, aside from money. And then like you said, with the collusion and everyone just you know, absolutely low balling and everyone coming in at the same exact number somehow and all these different things. So that was that was my first time dealing with it. It was eye opening, even more than you already d already kind of had an idea. But for me to number one thing, it was just opportunity. And then you know, just being around those young guys, like I was saying, we'll hopefully we'll kind of.

Speaker 9: How was it going to Sacramento last year? After pitching the Colisseum we heard what Seve said, Luis Savarino said about the mound. How tough was that and was that really something? And did it improve part way through the season once they started listening to pictures and how to improve the mound?

Speaker 5: Let's say the game man might have got a little bit better. Super inconsistent though, like even like the bullpen mound, if you went out there, it's not it's not your typical clay. It's not your typical like red or brown clay. It was like this black, chunked up material that just would you know, you felt like it was the seventh inning after you threw ten pitches kind of thing.

Speaker 5: Pads around the walls. They put a little building in the left corner for the clubhouse and all that stuff, and they definitely did the did the least they had to do to kind of get it ready. But like you said, the coming from the coliseum, things were so outdated there it was kind of hard to get a good grasp on it. Especially for the dudes who don't have any other experiences. You kind of feel for them because they're playing in the triple at Ballpark and you heard Sevy talk about it. With just the inconsistencies. You go on the road and you're like, God, this is what the show is, and then you kind of go back to Sack. But I think they did a good job. You know, Cotts and the crew did a good job keeping everyone kind of just focused on baseball and focused on each other and not worrying about those kind of little things.

Speaker 5: Hope, I hope for all those views that they do get out of there and get to Vegas and that all goes smoothly so they can all experience the full the full show. But overall it is pretty wish you wash it. It was an ideal.

Speaker 9: How would you explain it the full show? Because people will say, oh, well, they got to go to the Big League's eighty one games. How would you explain it to those guys who are like, yeah, you know, eighty one big League games on the road is different than eighty one big League home games.

Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean just I mean, the biggest thing is the clubhouse isn't even connected to the dugout, so you got guys waiting for half innings to run down the track. So that just the image of that alone pretty crappy looking. And then just the lack of the second and third.

Speaker 5: You show up in Texas, Seattle, you walk out, you look up and you see you know, the roof, and you can just feel the atmosphere versus you just kind of step out and sack and you just have like your you know, the one level it's like one hundred and five degrees and everything just feels like burned out.

Speaker 5: You know, you're still getting your paycheck, You're still getting treated well in the clubhouse with the staff and the you know, with all these good players and everything, but it definitely misses just a little touch of, like guess aid the show.

Speaker 1: Sean, do you feel like you had an advantage that team has a lot of young arms and at some point, I mean early on actually in the season, the pitching kind of fell apart for four to six weeks, and that knocked the A's out of the playoff contention. If you take that out, which you can't do, but if you take that out, the rest of the year like they were pretty good.

Speaker 1: This is how you know it turned into the interest that you had in the off season, the success you had over there. Do you think any of that had to do with you being able to maybe handle some of the you know, crappy parts of being in a minor league park, or do you think it just had more to do with some tweaks that you were making, whether it's pitch mixeror otherwise.

Speaker 5: Yeah, I was talking about the adjustments I made when I got to camp and Boston, just finding I wear my offspeed kind of play, and I learned a little more about my singer, which has been new the past couple of years, and that you know, I went into my five starts felt really strong. I feel like usually for me, it's like a fifteenish innings or so, and then I really kind of get rolling, and that's where I was at about you know, maybe twenty innings, and then kind of got shoved in the pen once everyone got healthy and I was still feeling really good about stuff. So I had had some like four or five inning outings out of the pen where I felt like I did really well, and then you know, everything kind of fell into place there where you know, they had to make some moves, got moved over to the athletics, and I kind of just knew where I was at, knew the team. It was helped obviously being familiar with everybody and Sacramento and everything, and then just kind of put on just kind of got into like a grinding.

So but you know, it's you hear a lot of good things about what goes on over there, for for American players or foreign players that go over there.

You could be the next Tom Selick. But think about you walking up to the plate, because there's not an amount of guys in Japan that are your size. So when you walk up to the plate and you start mashing homers there, you could be a legend in Japan. Not that I don't want you to play an MLB, but I'm just thinking like even after, like you get your ten years in and you're like, oh, maybe I can play a couple extra years and you just go over there and start launching nukes over the fence left and right, and they'll just I mean they'll have cheers, all kinds of cheers for you.

So I think they would really take to the to that part, the.

Sometimes in the off season, when you're sitting there as a minor league free agent, big league free agent looking for just an invite to camp, do you ever get any feedback of, Hey, you know what, we saw, what you did, the changes you made when you went to Texas, all that stuff, but we didn't like this. Do you ever get feedback, hey, you know what, if you could change this, would that be helpful to you?

Speaker 7: I bet you My agents have I stick a little bit removed from it and just focus on what I can control. But you know, like looking at it and being a self evaluator, like you, got to look at certain things. I think for me would probably be the walks I don't I didn't walk a ton. You know, there's something that I'd say if those were just a little bit better, I bet you being a way different position. But you know, as a self evaluator, you got to look at things and be honest with yourself. And I think that was probably the biggest part of my game that could have used the most, you know, change, And I think that's something that the soft season we've done with just pitch recognition, taking VP and treating it more of like seeing what pitch I want, being honest with myself if I swung at the pitch and VP that I wanted to even if it was a good swinger or not, like making sure I was really diligent about that side of the work. But you know, as you get older, you start to master things. And I think that's one thing as I get older, like I need to be better at So if I were to be evaluating myself, it would be just the walk aspect pitch recognition. But you know, I still want to do damage and I still know I can do damage. So sometimes you hit the ball out of the zone and it goes far. Sometimes you just swing a miss, But I definitely can be better in some parts.

Speaker 6: When you talk of teams, are you talking playing first base? Are you talking as d H. You know, platoony d H kind of guy. What what do you think your role would be better suited as? Because I'm sure you'd like to play first base. But if team comes, he says, hey, what should be our full time?

You know, I gotta be the biggest target in baseball to throw to at first base, so that's got to be a plus for some infielders. Still trust my hands picking the ballfield and ground balls, you know, like working big on some some first step stuff this offseason. But I think ultimately, like I would love to play first But whatever a team needs me to do is I'm gonna.

Speaker 6: You went from Seattle to Texas Last year, Seattle was what this close to going to the World Series for the first time ever. Were you rooting for those guys? I know, they let you go and you ended up in Texas, you ended up getting hot and having a great finish to the season. Do you did you root for them after you were let go?

Speaker 8: You know, I became close to a lot of those guys pretty fast.

Speaker 7: It's a really tight knit group of guys over there, and you know, that was something that was that was special to watch for them, especially being as close as I was to some of those guys and watching them succeed obviously, you know, Cal putting together probably most historic season as a catcher and them doing what they do.

Speaker 7: You know, like we all know the saying if you don't like it, played better and I could have played better to stay over there, but it wasn't in the cards, and you know, I just I wanted them to do it was best of them. And it feels like every team I was on pretty much was in the postseason outside of uh the Rangers, you know, like Mariners were in there, Brewers were in there, Blue Jays were in there, so maybe, uh maybe I was.

I'm a two scoop guy. And that's but you know, you can't be too greedy sometimes. That's all they got at the at the store. So it was it was awesome. I was really, I was, yeah, I was really. I was really appreciative for you know, the players and them doing that for me. So one of the one of the teams that you have played on you could actually join without signing with a big league organization. Any chance you're gonna play for Team Mexico in the WBC or do you have to wait till you find a job first?
