Stefan Gilmour retired and he was a former Defensive Player of the Year as a defensive back, a cornerback. I think twenty nineteen. I don't know if he's a Hall of Famer. He played thirteen years, he won one Super Bowl, he went to five Pro Bowls, two Wall Pros, thirty two career interceptions. It's pretty good, pretty good. I don't know how that stacks up with other cornerbacks.

He was available, you know, right, you know, they're down three to oh and I said, hey, I'm gonna be doing the six o'clock Sports Center. Pauli one chanced Terry Francona. I he wants to join us, Pauli and not thinking that of course he's and he goes, yeah, yeah, he's.

It was this is embarrassing. And remember when they won the Game four and they were like, oh, false hope. They're giving us false hope.

Speaker 2: Yeah, Dan Shaughnessy was crushing the Red Sox back then, but big poppy homers and extra innings. And I remember I would see Spike Lee down the first baseline and he would say to me, so Red Sox win, it's three to one. And then I see Spike Lee and he goes, who do you like? I said, I like the Red Sox. And then next game I see him, he goes, who do you like? I said, I like the Red Sox and he'd be like, damn. I saw it before game seven and he I said, you're not going to ask me who I like. He goes, no, I know who you like. And I wasn't rooting for anybody. I mean, I got content out of that. I was seven games. I was crazy, magical, wild shilling. He rose Rivera on the mound, Dave Robert Steele's a base, Bill Miller drives him. I mean, you're just watching a piece a history. And when I think back on forty years doing this, there's so many of those moments because in the moment when I'm there at Augusta watching Tiger win his first and you know, it hits you that I just saw history, but history is only a couple of minutes old. As he's walking, you know, with his dad, they're walking off the court, and I'm going.

Speaker 2: And there have been a lot of those moments when when Greg Norman is falling apart on the back nine in Augusta, I realize I'm watching something that will be talked about for decades, if not longer. You know, the Falcons game. I wasn't at that game, but you're watching history unfold and you're going, oh my god, because now I grew up on the history, the sport or moments that were taking place, but I wasn't covering it. Now, when you're able to cover these events in the last forty years, that's when it hits you of wow, you're part of that, or you were there for that, you witness that. That's real. And I think that's part of the beauty of what we're able to do. You get to cover things, you get to be at things, you get to witness things. And that's why I always say, just when you think you've seen it all, you have it. And you never say a team doesn't have a chance. Never never. I mean Duke yukon classic example, where you're going, you're down nineteen, they're playing great, it's over, and then it's not, and then it's a jumper, and then it's like what just happened Indiana football. In my lifetime, I never could have fathomed that Indiana could win a national championship. First of all, they wouldn't get through Ohio State and Michigan. And then you're watching this and I'm thinking the you I could see where they'd be playing for a national title. They've been there. Indiana Indiana was the homecoming game, like I think. I always thought schools were trying to have homecoming like the first week, so everybody could schedule Indiana football. But man, oh man, just when you think you've seen everything, you haven't, Yes, Marv.

Speaker 13: Remember when Jared Golf was number one overall pick and all we talked about was the fact that his lower half look like he would be broken in half with like because he had tooth pick calfs because we thought, oh, he won't be able to withstand, you know, get hit. It all matters. The thing I really like about him, too, is his presence, his command, his leadership skills, style, the way in which people respond to him when he's around them, the way in which the players gravitate towards him, listen to him, take his instruction, work with him, like the work I was called conducted by him. I know. I put on social media the fact that I had never seen, and I'd been to pro days for a long time, I've never seen a quarterback take charge of a protein in the way in which he did. Meaning And I was standing right next to John Spike at the GM of the Raiders when this was happening, and John and I scouted together in Philly, and I said, John.

Speaker 13: And what I'm talking about is the fact that before every route that was run, Fernando announced who the guy.

Speaker 13: He was really trying to highlight his guys and make sure people understood this is who he is, this is what he's about to run, and we're about to kind of like show you the kind of communication that we've had why.

Speaker 13: And I want you guys to really focus on the fact that this is who this guy is so you can really dial in on his skill set. And he wasn't doing it to kind of like shine light on himself, although it did shine light on him. He's trying to highlight his guys and see we all at this time and you're kind of forget and don't put enough emphasis on football and personal character and leadership, because we could become enamored with, well, can he throw the football like Mahomes? Can he throw it like Josh Allen? And how many times do we really need a quarterback to throw the football like Patrick meaning off schedule, you know, rolland.

Speaker 13: We just need a guy to be able to make great decisions, command the huddle, command his team, have mental stamina, physical stamina and put the ball in the end zone like Fernando did forty one times throwing the football this past year and leading this team to an undefeated season. He for me, He sewed it up for me as far as yeah, this is a franchise caliber quarterback. This is a guy who I would want leading the charge for me if I was running a football team. He came into to Indiana, took Coach Signetti's direction, brought together a whole bunch of new players, and got them on the same pace at a point where they go and have an undefeated season and whip every top program in the country. I have no questions, none, zero.

Speaker 7: Yes, the number two quarterback.

Speaker 13: The quarterback room overall is probably the most important job that a manager and a coaching staff and a football organization has in terms of their responsibility for getting that right. The number two quarterback has to be a sounding board for the number one quarterback, and Kirk's gonna start off as the number one quarterback, and then that relationship between the number one and the number two, however it plays out, is as important as the relationship between the quarterback and the head coach, the quarterback and the quarterback coach, the quarterback and the play caller. However that is all configured, that relationship is critical. I've been on organizations where the number two quarterback added basically no value to the number one guy, and at some point in time it takes a toll, and it's something that is a detriment to the development and the performance of the number one QB. Kirk is a pro's pro. We've known that his entire career. He's a guy who's relied on his mastery of the game, mastery of that offense that they're going to be running in Vegas in particular, and he's relied on his ability to anticipate throw with accuracy and have competitive stamina to the tune of he's made a gazillion dollars a gazillion and he isn't the guy who's gonna woalu you. Kirk Cousins for sure when you see him in person, is not gonna woalu you.

Speaker 13: And I think that relationship between him and Fernando, I think they're made perfectly for one another in terms of being able to coexist really help one another. However, the depth chart plays itself out and in what time it plays itself out to where it's going to be beneficial to him both. I think John made a very smart move in doing that. I think Clinton made a very smart move that being Kobak and doing that. And I think it's gonna pay dividends for sure down the road.

Cam was the guy who could very much so make the off schedule, plays throw from different platforms, but had competitive stamina, has a high degree of football intellect and football intelligence, has a rocket for an arm, all those things. It's just it's just a matter of, Okay, well, which which one are you looking for?

Speaker 13: What do you think is more a fit for what you want? Both in terms of the way he plays the game and the kind of person that he is which one do you feel like you're more comfortable with? So it would still be one of those conversations where you would sit there and go, Okay, this guy best fits us more so than this guy. Cam's legit. Cam just needs to continue and Coach sla is gonna have to wind up and Brian Daball are gonna to wind up really getting everything situated around him, getting him on the right page, getting him comfortable in this offense where he can really shine like Shannon Dawson had him shine down there in Miami.

Speaker 2: Why is it we have a real disparity between ty Simpson is a first round pick, maybe better than Fernando Mendoza, I know, Orlowsky and you think highly of Ty Simpson. I do, And then you have other people, including you know, an NFL scout I spoke to last night who said, I don't have a first round grade on him, but that doesn't mean he won't go in the first round. Why is there such a wide disparity of opinions on him?

Speaker 13: Because we're human beings, and you can show human beings the same tape, the same you know, four or five games, the same throat, and they would look at look at it, and two people would vary wide, wildly and widely in terms of what they just saw. People see things differently. Now, there are some objective statistics that people won't move off of that they feel as though do not project a high level of performance for Ty Simpson, number one, his height, his weight, his playing experience, how the season they believe was uneven for him. Those are objective things, you know, those are objective things. His height, his weight, his you know, his his hand size, his statistics, is playing experience. Those are all objective things that you can measure, all right. Then there's the subjective realm that you have to move into, and that really does affect the projection. And some people aren't comfortable going there. They really aren't. They just want to look at look, show me the data, and show me what data usually leads to projecting a high level of success and what doesn't. Well, there's too many data points that say that this guy is not going to become a franchise caliber quarterback, and they.

Speaker 13: Regular season versus Georgia on the road, regular season versus Missouri on the road in the playoffs, versus Oklahoma down seventeen points, and the throws that he made to bring that football team back, I would look at that same person who said, hey, you know what, I don't care his height, his weight, and his playing experience says he isn't gonna be very good. I'm gonna I'm gonna say to them, well, you explained to me this whole shot and cover two against a Georgia football team on the road in Athens. You tell me if that projects to the NFL. Tell me if this seven step play action passed that he throws on the money over the movie to Jeremy Bernard, basically having to blindly throw this ball and trust that he's gonna be there. You tell me if that projects to the NFL. Because I can tell you this, there's a lot of quarterbacks in the NFL right now who can't do that, and he's doing it over and over and over again against high level competition.

Speaker 13: And then you have Fernando right who is that? And they say, oh, you know what? But he isn't quite athletic enough. He can't really do what Zach Wilson did in his pro day.
