00:00:00 Speaker 1: You are listening to The Dan Patrick Show on Fox Sports Radio Our two on. 00:00:06 Speaker 2: This Thursday, Dan and The Danats Dan Patrick Show. Stat of the Day brought to you by Pennini America, the official Trading Cards of The Dan Patrick Show Charles Barkley. In an hour from now, Mike Florio from Pro Football Talk Live. 00:00:19 Speaker 3: He will join us to talk about. 00:00:21 Speaker 2: The still unfolding controversy that Bill Belichick not a first ballot Hall of Famer. There's also a report that Eli Manning is not a second ballot Hall of Famer, so we'll talk to Florio about that as well. There was some news yesterday at the tail end of the show when Shams was on the mother Ship and he was talking about the possibility of Giannis being traded. And the reason why I brought it up is that he had information that Jannis was now asking to be traded. We were waiting to see if it got to that point and was he going to say something publicly, probably said something privately or his agent did. Now, all of a sudden, Milwaukee Bucks are on the clock trade deadline coming up in what a week from now, February fifth trade deadline, So he wants out and If you're Milwaukee, you've been thinking about this, not publicly, but you you know you have to do the what if scenarios here. But you don't want to be hurrying in rushing in to just trade Yannis. You have to get something that's going to help you. Two time MVP got an NBA championship, And if nothing at the trade deadline moves the needle, then you have to be patient. And you know those summer trades open more doors. Teams have flexibility, and that's when bidding wars are born. But Yannis in Milwaukee, the time is coming to an end. What matters now is not how fast you move him, but what do you do? What do you get when you do move him? I still think Golden State makes the most sense. If I'm Milwaukee, I don't want Karl Anthony Towns. I don't want to pair him with Miles Turner. Who else is going to have draft picks and maybe a young player or two. Milwaukee reportedly wants a young, blue chip star. But if I'm a team, why am I trading my blue chip star for a guy who is an older star? Golden State makes sense if you want to make one last run, can you trade. I think they got like four first round draft picks in the next couple of drafts. Jonathan Kaminga the much rumor Jonathan Kaminga could be on the move. Can you trade Jimmy Butler's contract to the Milwaukee Bucks. I think there's pieces in there. I'm not sure what you're gonna have left over, but if you give me Steph Draymond Green, okay, I've got your attention at least. And this has been rumored for the last two years of Giannis going to Golden State, and maybe maybe that's where you have him. You don't want to trade him and keep him in the East, send him out West and Giannis with Steph, and maybe you've got two years trying to win another championship. Charles Barkley will join us in an hour from now, so we'll talk about this. And also the inside the NBA crew, they were talking about Lebron James and what they think will happen with Lebron James, and it almost felt like they were suggesting if he comes back, would he come back and play for Cleveland and his career there, And I think that that's been talked about before. Nothing public by Lebron. But Lebron going back to Cleveland with Bronnie, of course, And that'd be a nice way to end it if it happens that way, and it doesn't have to be a move based on money. If Lebron decided he was going to take that mid level you know, salary exemption. I mean, you could make this work. And you don't want to give up If you're Lebron, you don't want to be giving up these young players, you know, for them to get you, and you don't want to strap them salary cap wise with your salary. And if you do it and you don't do it for the money, you know, you could have a team that could win the East. You could go back to the NBA Finals. You got a better chance in Cleveland with that roster than you do with the Lakers. 00:04:43 Speaker 3: So we'll talk to Charles about that. 00:04:44 Speaker 2: He'll join us in the final hour of the program. 00:04:47 Speaker 4: Yeah, Paulie, I was just thinking of a couple teams. I saw some odds of teams that could pursue you. Honest, if you're the Oklahoma City Thunder, you're thirty eight and ten and you've got tons of draft picks, would you consider it. 00:05:01 Speaker 2: I'm already the best team in the league. I don't want to disrupt what we have. I want to be true to these players who helped us win a championship. Because by bringing in Giannis, are you telling them without telling them we need help if we're going to try to win again this year. I think they look at this and say, we're still the best team. And I don't want to give up the future here, like we're built for the next five years. I don't want to give that up just to win one more title. I want to win two or three more titles. 00:05:35 Speaker 5: Yes, mart If Giannis goes to Golden State to pair up with Steph, does he undo the good will that he got while he was in Milwaukee? Is like the small market guy winning a championship, staying quote unquote loyal to his team. 00:05:47 Speaker 6: Does he undo that goodwill? 00:05:48 Speaker 2: No, he gave you a championship. He was loyal. They just didn't put the right pieces around him, you know, coaches around him. 00:05:58 Speaker 4: Yeah, Paulie question with the Spurs thirty two and fifteen, maybe a little head of schedule, Wemby, do you mess with that and bring in gi Honus No, man, No, that's a too quick nose. 00:06:10 Speaker 2: Yeah, I got something in San Antonio, I do. I don't want to mess with that. And I got something in Okac I don't want to mess with that. Golden State. Golden State got a swing for the fences, because as it is now, you're just gonna be one of those. Oh you get a chance to see Steph Curry, you're treading water and that's no man's land in the NBA. Hey, you know you won forty four games. That wouldn't cut it for me. I would take a big swing and go after Yannis because you might not have anything to show for this over the next two years the way you're going now. And if you get him now, all of a sudden, now you have something, and maybe you get into the playoffs and you get into these you know, five game, seven game series. 00:07:00 Speaker 3: Boy, ye, there'll be a tough out. You got to beat him four times. 00:07:06 Speaker 2: I don't know what you're gonna give up, But if you're giving up draft picks, Milwaukee gets a couple of players, maybe you get Butler's expiring contract. And once again, I don't do the math, and you know how this fits in a salary cap. None of that is just as much and maybe a third team has to get involved in this as well. Eight seven seven to three DP Show email address dpat Danpatrick dot com, twitter handle a TP show. In his first twelve games in Cleveland as a visiting player, lebron James went ten and two. He's lost his last two in Cleveland by a combined fifty four points. The Stab of Today brought to you by Panini America, the official trading cards of The Dan Patrick Show. Browny had a highlight last night in mop up time that yeah, I had a dunk, threw it down, big man. 00:08:05 Speaker 6: He had eight points last night, almost. 00:08:08 Speaker 2: Out scored his dad. Bron had eleven. Really yeah, yeah he had eleven. Yeah, Bronnie turning it up, turned it up the heat a little bit. 00:08:23 Speaker 4: Best doing the league, Yeah, best two man team, best father son doing the league, hands down. 00:08:29 Speaker 7: Yeah, hold on, let me put my Bronnie James jersey on. That's right, that's right. 00:08:36 Speaker 2: We got our pick of jerseys, and you know so right, Prince, he got Brunson Jersey. Marvin, you got timber Wolves. Oh you know, you got Castle with san Antonio, Paulie got Steph Curry, set got Bronnie James. 00:08:52 Speaker 3: Like a misprint. That's the number nine right there, Yeah it is. 00:08:55 Speaker 6: That's right. 00:08:55 Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, I have Luca I have Lucas Jersey there. 00:09:00 Speaker 3: Yeah. Nice. You gotta gotta get that sign Seaton. Gotta get it framed. 00:09:05 Speaker 7: I would, I would get it signed. I would get it framed. Oh, by the way, I got an unbelievable gift in the mail. Now, if I can tell our cameraman weeks if he goes out in you know, past the glass doors on the left right by the Crappensburg State. 00:09:24 Speaker 3: Photo that I have. 00:09:25 Speaker 2: Of course, and it would be right by the wheel of Punishment, and there it is. 00:09:32 Speaker 3: There it is. 00:09:33 Speaker 2: If you're watching on Peacock or NBC Sports Network. John Colby came up with the theme music for Sports Centered. 00:09:41 Speaker 3: The eat Da Da Da Da Da Da. 00:09:43 Speaker 2: That is, that's the music sheet and he signed it. He said, Hey, I was watching the show the other day. I thought this would look great on the wall. So he sent me that yesterday. And I'm known, you know, John and his wife and family for a long long time. And uh, nice surprised that I got the Sports Center theme music a sheet of music autographed by John. Yes. 00:10:04 Speaker 8: Time, you gotta leave him voicemail. Thanks a lot, Thanks a lot. 00:10:07 Speaker 2: That's what I'm gonna give you a bloop on that. 00:10:11 Speaker 8: I'll take it. 00:10:13 Speaker 7: Hey, thanks for the game. 00:10:16 Speaker 3: Really nice. 00:10:18 Speaker 4: It's a line. 00:10:19 Speaker 3: I loved it every thought. 00:10:21 Speaker 7: Thanks a lot. 00:10:23 Speaker 3: It's funny, Todd, Thank you, Tod. Poll question for hour two is going. 00:10:32 Speaker 7: To be what let's see We've got three of them up there already, Dan Thrice pull questions Thrice. 00:10:38 Speaker 2: By the way, people ask me all the time. Hey, John Colby came up with the Sports Center theme song? What's your second favorite John Colby's song? And I don't have one? 00:10:48 Speaker 3: You just like his early work. I like his early work. He came up one hit wonder maybe. 00:10:54 Speaker 9: Yes, time for getting to the Star Wars theme or Rocky or Close Encounters. 00:10:58 Speaker 2: Nobody did Sports Center More importantly, did Sports Center theme song? 00:11:02 Speaker 3: Yes, I'm dying to know. 00:11:04 Speaker 4: Did he get paid upfront or did he get paid for dada da da dot? 00:11:08 Speaker 3: I don't know. 00:11:10 Speaker 2: And I might have asked John this a long time ago, because I think he sold it the rights. 00:11:17 Speaker 3: To the Mothership. I think I don't know, Yeah, Paul, Yes. 00:11:24 Speaker 7: A little known fact about John Colby. He's actually a co composer of the snow song informer. 00:11:32 Speaker 6: Oh that's his best work. 00:11:33 Speaker 3: That's not true. 00:11:37 Speaker 7: That I tried to think of the most random song I can think of. 00:11:43 Speaker 9: No. 00:11:43 Speaker 3: Informer. Yeah, he actually co wrote that he's been living off those royalties. 00:11:46 Speaker 6: I want the music sheet today. 00:11:48 Speaker 2: Yeah, well, John, thank you, thank you for sending me the sheet music for these sports center things. 00:11:53 Speaker 3: Yes, I'm not going to get suited for going da da da. 00:11:56 Speaker 9: You know, like Michael Buffer, certain words and things you can't stay and on radio or TV. 00:12:01 Speaker 3: I don't think so. 00:12:02 Speaker 2: Okay, I mean you were now now if you're making fun of John, Mothership might come after you. 00:12:09 Speaker 3: We don't want that, no, because that's where you're gonna end up after this show was over. 00:12:13 Speaker 9: I don't want that kind of heat. And I I gotta kip my opportunities over. 00:12:17 Speaker 2: I don't know how many opportunities you got. 00:12:21 Speaker 3: I think it's it's gonna be es. 00:12:24 Speaker 8: It's gonna go from dad that to uh would you like fries with that? 00:12:27 Speaker 3: I can no, No, you could not. 00:12:29 Speaker 8: I probably could not know. 00:12:30 Speaker 3: But I just feels like Mothership here. 00:12:33 Speaker 8: I come think we have something at a ten and a half in the back. Let me check. Have to be red with a white stripe need to be read because we can order that. 00:12:39 Speaker 7: Special for It would be so interesting because, like when we all worked at the Mothership before nobody knew all of this stuff about Todd, he was just kind of a quiet guy who sat in the corner. 00:12:50 Speaker 3: He really didn't. 00:12:51 Speaker 2: I mean we were suspicious, we were, you know, we had thoughts. 00:12:54 Speaker 7: I don't know, I like, he was just we had always felt like I know when we had like our morning meeting, like we used to have there and we would go over the DP three this is before we talked to you. 00:13:04 Speaker 3: It was like the early early meeting. 00:13:07 Speaker 7: It felt like we were polluting Todd's mind because we would talk about all kinds. 00:13:11 Speaker 3: Of random things and he would be like, really, that's the thing that people do. Really, people do this. 00:13:14 Speaker 10: Really. 00:13:15 Speaker 7: It was like, man, we're really like just corrupting this guy. And now over the last eighteen years he's exposed all of this stuff about who Todd really is. It would be so interesting to see him go back to Bristol walking those hallways with everybody knowing this version of Todd rather than the previous one. 00:13:30 Speaker 9: Are they introduced me like to urban dictionary terms and stuff like what is that. 00:13:35 Speaker 3: That's the thing. 00:13:36 Speaker 8: That's the thing people do to each other. 00:13:37 Speaker 3: And they have a name for it, toun and what Todd? You ever heard of this? That is not a thing. 00:13:43 Speaker 8: No one has ever done that. 00:13:45 Speaker 3: Yeah, yes, mar. 00:13:47 Speaker 5: My favorite thing is when somebody says, Amar, one quick question. I'm going to stop you right there. 00:13:51 Speaker 3: Yes, yes, yes, yes, bully. 00:13:55 Speaker 4: I remember my first month working with Todd. Our deaths were back to back. And you know, whenever you get a desk at an office, you fill it with you know, little things, paperwork, pictures, whatever, especially if you work in sports. Todd would leave every day and take every single thing off his desk like he was leaving forever. And he did that the entire time where he is. 00:14:15 Speaker 2: He had the briefcase and it was full of like media guides, and you would think that somebody got fired and they had to clear out their desk. 00:14:23 Speaker 3: He took everything off the desk. 00:14:25 Speaker 8: Back then, there was nothing online. 00:14:26 Speaker 9: You had something called the Coast Side of Book, a college book with all the names of the teams and the contacts. 00:14:31 Speaker 3: And you didn't have book family photos, you had nothing. 00:14:34 Speaker 8: I did not. 00:14:34 Speaker 9: I had a little bronco helmet thing that you blow up. I put that at the top, so I'm cut a little stop the helmet. 00:14:39 Speaker 7: Balloon type of the Yes, I just tos it. Back then, things weren't online. Things are online now. Until Todd still has those books. I wouldn't blame the internet for that. 00:14:48 Speaker 8: I don't carry about my briefcase any more. Now it's a backback. 00:14:50 Speaker 9: But I had a briefcase and my tunisia and my chips and pretzels and carrot stick. 00:14:54 Speaker 2: That's sticks, Let's book some guests. But you do take everything home. You clear your desk, even today. 00:15:00 Speaker 9: I do, except for the little knick knocks that I know you like to have in certain spots. I wouldn't think to touch that that belongs to you. 00:15:04 Speaker 3: Is that an issue that I put stuff on your desk? 00:15:07 Speaker 9: It is a little cluttered if it was up to me. But again, I don't want to burst your bubble. And I know there's an OCD thing going under. There's a lot of things pretty much everything. All I really need is room for my laptop and my book and my water and my phone and my my notes. But there's like all this stuff here that just I'm kind of drowning in that. 00:15:23 Speaker 3: A little bit I have OCD right. 00:15:27 Speaker 9: Do you think something would happen to the show would go in a negative direction if we moved something an inch to the left right or got rid of some of the things that are currently on. 00:15:33 Speaker 3: Are you asking me to move some stuff? 00:15:35 Speaker 8: I'd like you to give it some thought. Does to decide right now? 00:15:38 Speaker 9: But I know pretty much every single thing on here, if it was up to me, would not be on my desk. Every single thing up in this bronco thing. But even that I would put somewhere else. All right, It's nothing mean. I'm not trying to stir something up, but it's I have less desk room because of things that I don't even look at and navigate around in the course of my day. 00:15:56 Speaker 2: Yeah, but this is content. It's a TV show as well, and I'm trying to show some interesting things. 00:16:01 Speaker 8: I appreciate that. 00:16:02 Speaker 9: But the stress of knowing that one wrong move, or if I get up a certain way and I knock something over it, that's gonna be much worse than whether it's actually on my desk or not. 00:16:10 Speaker 8: I want to break anything. 00:16:13 Speaker 6: I'm frightened. 00:16:14 Speaker 9: I could speak for all of us. That's something would move two inches to the left and you'll notice it, and then we get a whole talking to No one needs that. 00:16:21 Speaker 3: Yeah, I talked in the back. 00:16:23 Speaker 8: I'm gonna tell me what a great job I didn't know. I'll just come back. We don't let try my. 00:16:26 Speaker 3: Studio, Todd. I put the stuff where it goes. 00:16:29 Speaker 6: Yeah, that's fair. 00:16:29 Speaker 8: And that's why you get to taste the meat before we do. Because you're the hose. You get to eat the bago. 00:16:34 Speaker 3: What are we doing now? 00:16:35 Speaker 11: The airing of the grievance today? 00:16:37 Speaker 3: What are we doing so? 00:16:38 Speaker 9: I wouldn't mind if the rest of us had a little snuff before eleven thirty, But but you're the hose. 00:16:42 Speaker 8: You get to do it. You're trying it out, but to make sure it's not poisoned. 00:16:46 Speaker 2: See you open the door and then you tell me what you really Everything comes out Now. 00:16:50 Speaker 8: I'm the house. I eat first. You guys will wait, and then. 00:16:54 Speaker 9: We treat the guys in the back like that. We're gonna eat, and then you guys in the back will we last? At least we're seconds. 00:16:59 Speaker 3: I gotta put up with you for a week in San Francisco. 00:17:02 Speaker 8: It's gonna be rough for you. I wouldn't want to be in your shoes. Are we sitting on the same No. 00:17:05 Speaker 6: You get the first. 00:17:06 Speaker 3: No, I'm not on your flight. 00:17:07 Speaker 8: I mean three A. What do you got? 00:17:10 Speaker 3: No? No, I'd rather walk. 00:17:12 Speaker 6: You would rather walk? Yes? 00:17:13 Speaker 3: I know you would. Yes, Paul. 00:17:14 Speaker 4: The other day on Monday, I noticed Todd's shot on TV. There's this gold thing sticking into his chin area. I said, can you move that over? Like three inches? He goes, I don't know if I should do that, And I said, I'll give you the okay, it's just in the shot. 00:17:26 Speaker 6: He goes, I hope nobody notices as I. 00:17:29 Speaker 9: Was moving at the shaking and the petrified, I'm like moving it. I'm like, you think he does he see me doing that? 00:17:34 Speaker 8: Please don't tell me. 00:17:34 Speaker 7: He sues me that this is actually interesting about it. This actually originates with Paul being unhappy with what's on Todd's desk, and now Todd's getting in trouble because Paul pushed him into this segment about being like, hey, you need to move that stuff. 00:17:45 Speaker 3: And he didn't throw that over and over and over again. 00:17:49 Speaker 6: Yes, signed me to movie. 00:17:50 Speaker 8: He said, if it's bothering, you're just moving. I'm like, no, you should move looks up. 00:17:53 Speaker 6: He looks up and around him see you moving. 00:17:55 Speaker 8: And you move it. 00:17:56 Speaker 3: Then if that bothering me, you do it. 00:17:58 Speaker 8: We done for now, as you were, back to you in the studio. 00:18:03 Speaker 2: How about we take a break. Mike Florio will join us more on the Hall of Fame situation. He is Pro Football Talk Live co host Mike Florio also a contributor to Football Night in America. 00:19:12 Speaker 3: Before we get to Belichick. 00:19:14 Speaker 2: I had a problem with Sean Payton revealing medical information about bo Nicks. Bo Nicks certainly had a problem with it. Your thoughts when you heard Sean Payton talking about previous surgeries with bo Nix's ankle. 00:19:30 Speaker 11: I was surprised that he did, but I'm not surprised when Sean Payton says something that ruffles feathers, whether it's with the Jets or with whoever. Sean Payton tends to say what he says and then he'll deal with the fallout later. But with bo Nicks, it definitely seemed to be an issue. Bo Nicks apparently called his own press conference to address the situation. And I didn't think it was funny when Peyton said he had surgery here here, here, whatever, and bo Nick says he doesn't know anything about the surgery. That was like bo he knows everything about every surger you've ever had because he scouted you and drafted you, and everybody gets all that information. 00:20:10 Speaker 3: So they know. 00:20:11 Speaker 11: But it does seem to be a little something going on between Peyton and bow Nix, and fortunately they have some time to smooth things over before they get back to work. 00:20:21 Speaker 3: Go to neutral corners. 00:20:23 Speaker 2: The Hall of Fame feels the need to issue a press release. 00:20:28 Speaker 11: Why, well, I don't know, Dan, And it's funny. I was on radio in Seattle when the press release came out and they said to me, oh, we've just gotten a statement from the Hall of Fame, and I thought it was a bit like okay, yeah, and then I said no, it's real. I thought, oh my god, they're putting Belichick in, Like why would you issue a statement? And then when I saw the statement, like what is this about? They're threatening to strip the voting privileges from fifty people who don't get paid, who spend hours every year. It's a vanity license plate. I mean, it really is. Nobody's getting a job because they're a pro football Hall of Fame voter. Nobody is holding onto their job because ooh I'm a Hall of Fame voter. It's just something you can talk to your friends and family about. And hey, I'm a pro football Hall of Fame voter, and you don't get anything for it other than a hassle. And now they're threatening to take it away because of some vague failure to comply with the bylaws. And I just posted something a little while ago. Dan, The best I can tell is they're not pleased with what Armando Salgero said to you yesterday about what went on in the room. Because I got the bylaws, I found them, had somebody send them to me. There's a specific clause in there that says you have to maintain strict confidence about anything that is said in the meeting, so you're not allowed to talk about it. But this process has put people in a difficult position where fans, media, those of us who weren't in the room, we want to know what the hell happened to lead to this result. So I thought the whole thing was a mistake by the Hall of Fame. It doesn't surprise me because the Hall of Fame created this mess that now the fifty voters have to deal with. 00:22:11 Speaker 2: Okay, but how do they change this? As one of the voters told me on Wednesday morning. We know the system is flawed. We have to change it. What are they going to change it too. 00:22:21 Speaker 11: Dan, here's the easiest fix. They just need to go back to an upper down vote for the finalists. That's how it used to be. And Vaije Gregorian, who posted at the Kansas City Star website his reasoning for not voting for Belichick. 00:22:37 Speaker 2: He said, wait, hold on, Mike, go back to it. Just a thumb's upper thumbs down. There was no bus. 00:22:44 Speaker 11: It used to be. Well, no, I mean you voted secretly, but it used to be when you had your pool of finalists, they would go through each one. Once we got down to the actual finalists, whatever it was, five to eight, however many it would be upper down vote yes or no. And if you got eighty percent. 00:23:02 Speaker 6: Of the vote. 00:23:03 Speaker 11: Currently with fifty voters, you get forty, you're in. So Vaje Grigorian, who didn't vote for Belichick, wrote in his column, if it was just a straight yes or no for Bill Belichick, yes, I'm voted for Bill Belichick. He should be in. But they've created this weird thing. And I'll try to be as concise as possible to the extent that I even understand it. They have five people jammed into the same bucket, and for this year it was Robert Kraft, Bill Belichick, Else Greenwood, Ken Anderson, and Roger Craig. Three from the Seniors Committee, contributor nominee Craft coaching nominee Belichick. Five of them. You pick three. You don't do up or down for each one. Every voter picks three. And Gregorian's explanation is, well, for these three Senior Committees, this is their only shot. These guys Greenwood, Anderson, and Craig, this is it for them. If they don't get in now, they're never getting in. So he voted for them because his thinking is Belichick's going to get in next year. So that process that has changed what used to be yes or no, up or down. That makes it harder for the finalists to get in. And it's why we saw a smaller class last year. Of whoever was in that bucket. Last year, Sterling Sharp was the only one who got in. They all should have a straight upper down vote. It shouldn't be this weird Pick three out of five and then we'll see who gets eighty percent. 00:24:31 Speaker 3: Yeah, because if you get. 00:24:32 Speaker 2: To the point where the contributor and the coach are getting in, and then you have three players that surveive to get to this point. And as the voter said, you know, you got five candidates that are worthy, and now we got to pick three out of the five and they have to get eighty percent. It's just a flawed system. Why not put all five in if you got one from that category, one from that category and three former players. 00:25:00 Speaker 11: Here's my theory, Dan, I think that the Hall of Fame was sensitive to criticism from people like Dion Sanders that too many people are getting in. But raising the bar when you've already had a bar here, it's not fair to the next class of candidates to say, oh, oh uh, we're raising the bar higher, even though we've put all these other people in under a different standard, we're now raising the bar higher. The only solution to Dion's concern, and we've been advocating this for three years now, create an upper room of the Hall of Fame the best of the best. We have a running list that we post every year at the time the Hall of Fame and Shrimeate ceremony happens, updated whether or not there's any new ones this year that are the no brainer, might drop these guys are in. And the sad part about this is Belichick would be on that list. He's a no brainer, might drop best to the best, and he couldn't get through the door the first time around. That's what I think makes this so frustrating to most people. 00:26:04 Speaker 2: But if you were going to pinpoint the biggest reason why Belichick is not going into the Hall of Fame this year, it's what. 00:26:11 Speaker 11: Well, people don't like him. I think that's it. People don't like him. He's a jerk. Is that a surprise? But I think we need to be able to compartmentalize. He's one of the greatest coaches of all time and the fact that he is a jerk objectively speaking or subjectively speaking, my opinion he's a jerk. Others have that opinion. That's part of what made him great. He'd rip into Tom Brady in front of the meeting room and scare the hell out of everybody, and they'd all, we better, we better do our jobs, or we're not going to have jobs. So he's clearly one of the greatest coaches of all time. And I think it's easy to find reasons if you don't like someone if you're looking for a reason, Oh it's spygate. Oh he needs to sit out of here because of spygate, or you know whatever else they want to. Oh, look at his Look at his record without Tom Brady, look at his record with Tom Brady. Tom Brady, he made Bill Belichick like, you can come up with any reason, and people just subjectively don't like certain people. And I think that when you have a unreasonably secret process where no one's allowed, it's like a papal conclave. Let mean, come on, why why isn't it transparent? When you take away transparency, people can hide behind all sorts of things and then they just and you don't even have to vote. 00:27:25 Speaker 2: No. 00:27:26 Speaker 11: That's one of the other problems with this process. All I didn't vote against Bill Belichick. I just didn't vote for him. I never said no to Bill Belichick. So I think I think, and I'll defer to Armando because he presented him and he told you yesterday. Spygates seemed to be the reason. But I think that I think it was just at least eleven of the fifty didn't like him, and so they sunk their teeth into anything they could to justify it. 00:27:51 Speaker 2: Mike Florio, Pro Football Talk Live co host, what does this mean for Tom Brady when he comes becomes eligible. 00:27:59 Speaker 11: I don't think it means anything. Tom Brady should be a mic drop, no brainer, first ballot, Upper Room Hall of Famer, and he's in a different category. See he'll be in the modern era player category that ultimately gets down to fifteen when they start the meeting, and then they cut it to ten, and then they cut it to seven. And I think you vote for five of the seven, just same ideas the other thing we talked about, and you have to get eighty percent on the five of the seven. And I don't know is somebody going to say, well, you know, Brady's definitely going to get an outvot for somebody else instead. So they need to get back to upper down. And if it's a straight up or down vote Brad, I mean, who would vote no to Tom Brady? To flight gate was a small blip on the radar screen, and I think it was overblown. I think the evidence should have been deemed to be inconclusive. And I think the whole idea of treating this objective weird. It's always been in the rule book range of air pressure. Who the hell cares we wanted to be able to throw the football. Who cares how much it's in the damn football? So I think that shouldn't matter. And I and I also think that Brady will benefit from this controversy. They'll be even more careful when Brady's up to not step in this pilot crap. 00:29:13 Speaker 6: Again. 00:29:14 Speaker 2: I brought this up. I brought it up a couple of times. Now I know Brady lied to the commissioner. That's why he got in trouble. Aaron Rodgers told me that he over inflated footballs. Nobody brought up labeled him a cheater. 00:29:30 Speaker 11: Yeah, Dan, this numbers just pulled out a thin air. It's the numbers. It's the recommended inflation from Wilson twelve point five to thirteen. I remember when this first happened. My wife was saying, well, what's going on with these footballs. It's like, well, Patriots are in trouble because they supposedly took air to the footballs. Well, why they do that? Well, because it makes it easier to hold the football. Well, what does that do? What makes it easier to throw the football? Well, isn't that what they want? Like don't we want The whole thing is just bizarre, and it was, and it's been reported over and over again. This was we didn't hit them hard enough for Spygate, and there was a caball of owners and others in the league that wanted another pound of flesh out of the New England Patriots. And the weird part about it is that one didn't stick to Belichick at all. He managed to push that whole thing over to Brady. So the only thing they really have on Belichick is spygate from nineteen years ago. And if you just if you throw away two thousand and seven and prior everything since then, is still more than enough for him to walk into the Hall of Fame on the first try. 00:30:35 Speaker 2: And I don't know if Robert Craft is getting in. I'm still amazed that he's not in when you look at his resume. Why has he been held outside the pearly gates. 00:30:46 Speaker 11: Well, if Jerry Jones is in, Robert Craft is in. It's that simple. Now, Robert Kraft is trying to get in under this new flawed process, and I won't be surprised if he didn't get in. I know there are some out there thinking that Robert has this grand conspiracy where he's going to keep Belichick out and he's going to get himself in. I thinks it would be hard for any of those five to get in. It may just be one at the end of the day of the five, like last year, that get to eighty percent. But the problem with the Hall of Fame is there are too many worthy candidates and the process entails. It's not apples to apples. I mean, it's apples to oranges, to car batteries to you know. I mean, it's impossible to compare all the different positions, all the different contributions, and it's all funneled into this log jam that's almost impossible to bust out of. So it's a very imperfect process, as highlighted by everything we've seen and heard the past two days. 00:31:48 Speaker 3: Eli Manning reportedly will have to wait another year. 00:31:51 Speaker 11: Your thoughts, well, I've doesn't surprise me because of the current process, and because beyond those two years when they went to the Super Bowl and one and look, he had two of the biggest moments in Super Bowl history, two of the greatest throws. The throw to Mario Manningham in Super Bowl forty six is not nearly as remembered as it should be. That saved the game for the Giants that day, And obviously we know about the Tyree throw. But you know, when you look at the balance of his career, you look at his numbers, all the stuff that people get rightfully caught up in when it's time to compare careers. Was he truly one of the best of his era that deserved I mean, there's a lot of great quarterbacks from his era, so it doesn't surprise me. It's taken him a couple of tries. Will he get in one of these days? I think so. I think he should be there. Jim Plunkett's the only starting quarterback with two Super Bowl wins who hasn't made it. Phil Simms has two super Bowl wins, but obviously he didn't play in Super Bowl twenty five. Roethlisberger's got two. He'll presumably get in. But yeah, I think Eli should be in. But it doesn't surprise me. It's going to take a little while for him to get there. 00:32:55 Speaker 2: Philip Rivers get bumped back another year because he came out of retirement. 00:33:00 Speaker 11: No, No, Dan. The moment that he landed on the active roster for the Indianapolis Colts his five year clock reset. He's got to wait five years to consider it. 00:33:11 Speaker 3: He could have five more kids by then. 00:33:14 Speaker 11: Oh maybe head coach of an NFL team by then too. I guess that could help his candidacy, But you know, I don't look. I think Philip Rivers was a great quarterback and it was a great story this year. 00:33:23 Speaker 2: But Mike, if Mike Tomlin is, he can be eligible next year for the Hall of Fame. 00:33:28 Speaker 3: Correct, right, Well, so coaches one year. 00:33:34 Speaker 11: Coaches now have to be out one year. And the problem is there's already a logjam of coaches. Mike Homgrin should be in, Mike Shanahan should be in. Now, Mike Tomlin's going to be in the mix, and there's a separate committee that serves up one candidate one So who's going to be next year? Is it gonna be Tomlin? Is he gonna be Belichick? Are they going to decide? Well, you know what, if they're not going to put Belichick in, maybe we don't put him up there. I think given the blowback and the reaction, I think Belichick sails in next year. I think it's a no brainer. The only question Dan ponder this. Michael Hawley made this point yesterday. Will he show up at the ceremony when he gets in, or will he do what terall Owens did and do his own thing on that day that he joins the rest of the immortals in Canton. 00:34:22 Speaker 2: Maybe he sends his girlfriend. I would She might have she might give a better speech than him. 00:34:30 Speaker 11: Well, she should, everinely be the one who presents him. Now, I'd put my money on that if and when he gets in and when he gets in, But I could see him being mad enough about this that he wouldn't show up. I still think he has a sufficient appreciation of NFL and football history that he would not refuse to show up. But I think he'd at least think about it. 00:34:52 Speaker 2: Thank you, Mike's always we appreciated. We'll see in San Francisco. Thanks Dan, good talking anybody, Mike Florio, Pro Football Talk Live co host and contribut two Football Night in America. Yeah, I didn't think of that. That does Belichick say, Hey, I'm not showing up. I'll hold my own sort of celebratory day, give a speech to the people that really matter most to me. I'd still I'd send my girlfriend She'll bring a flamethrower. 00:35:22 Speaker 3: That'd be awesome. 00:35:23 Speaker 2: All right, take a break. Phone calls coming up, Charles Barkley at the top of the hour. Back after this. 00:35:29 Speaker 1: Fox Sports Radio has the best sports talk lineup in the nation. The biggest storyline heading into this the Big Game rematch of Big Game forty nine, Sam Donald's redemption, Patriots turn around or other Right now Sam Donald's redemption has about sixty four percent of that vote. 00:36:38 Speaker 3: And we'll talk to Sam about that tomorrow. 00:36:41 Speaker 7: We also have more of an underdog Seahawks or Patriots. Patriots at eighty two percent winning that one. And then whose career would you want? This one's from Paul, Eli, Manning or Drew Brees. Drew Brees has fifty five percent of that vote. 00:36:52 Speaker 3: Yeah, I would take Drew Brees. 00:36:55 Speaker 2: I'd take Drew Brees because nobody is saying, you know, is he a Hall of Fame or not? 00:37:01 Speaker 3: Uh? 00:37:01 Speaker 2: And probably a first ballot Hall of Famer. Eli's going to get in, but when you factor in, Eli had two great months of high quality football in his career, but that's probably gonna be enough to get into the Super Bowl. 00:37:18 Speaker 8: Yeah. 00:37:19 Speaker 5: More, and Drew Brees won with the Saints. That's almost like Indiana football winning the national title. 00:37:25 Speaker 4: Yeah, Paul, Yeah, Drew Brees's Super Bowl win feels like a win and a half. You might think that some people would pick Eli with the two, but Breeze's career is almost really underrated if you look his regulation stats. 00:37:39 Speaker 2: Uh. 00:37:40 Speaker 3: Jeff in Detroit, Hi. 00:37:41 Speaker 10: Jeff five five two twenty five checking in. 00:37:48 Speaker 13: In a long time. 00:37:49 Speaker 10: What up go down? And the Cellers? Man, I miss you guys. A lot has been going on. I got a couple of comments. 00:37:57 Speaker 6: And a question for you. Dan. 00:38:00 Speaker 10: First of all, if it was me and I was a New England Patriot, I would put on a free Belichick shirt right about now. That guy has done more for football than any coach that I can think of as a guy who has not even sniffed a championship. So yeah, he's in the Hall of Fame. 00:38:19 Speaker 6: Detention. 00:38:20 Speaker 10: People get you were saying earlier about the Greek freaking people posing him to go to certain places. They proposed him to come here to Detroit. But one thing that I know, you got to have three seats coaching, chemistry, and culture, and we got that right now, and we got Jasen during So I'm good on all of that. My question to you, Dan is outside of Seattle in New England this past NFL season, what was your pleasant surprise and what was your biggest disappointment? I know for me, it was my Lions and the damn Bears, man, I mean that secret sauce that boy got over there is something else. 00:38:58 Speaker 2: Yeah, I say the Lions because it feels like They're now getting further and further away. You don't make the playoffs, you start to look at the Bears, the Packers are still going to be formidable. Maybe the Vikings get it right. So I would say the Lions not being in the playoffs pleasant surprises. Well we've taken New England out of that, Carolina, I have to give them some credit. I know it's not a good division, but I mean they made the playoffs. I know, losing record, it just you know that that kind of stayed with me for a little while, that they they were in games and maybe they found something there and maybe, you know, I want to see another year with Bryce Young. I'm not going to give him two hundred million dollars. I'd like to see another year or two. Sean and Oregon. Hi, Sean, welcome back. 00:39:54 Speaker 13: Hey, thanks for taking my call. 00:39:56 Speaker 1: Dan. 00:39:57 Speaker 13: You know, there's only five coaches that made it in first and uh Don Shula did not upset the commissioner, and he didn't screw up an undefeated season by losing to a ten and six wild card team called the New York Giants. 00:40:13 Speaker 3: Have a great day, you guys, all right? Thank you, Sean. 00:40:18 Speaker 7: Is that the case for him not being first ballot. I guess made the commissioner mad and lost the and he lost to the Giants. It's open season, right. 00:40:28 Speaker 3: So maybe we're looking at it. 00:40:29 Speaker 7: It sort of cuts both ways, like Bill Belichick was so great that he's pulling Eli Manning up into the Hall of Fame, and Eli Manning was so bad that he actually made Bill Belichick a not first ballot Hall of Famer. 00:40:41 Speaker 2: Yeah, you got to make up your mind. Is that, oh my god, Eli beat you twice for a Super Bowl? Or hey, you beat Belichick, you should be in the Hall of Fame. Either way you're looking at Belichick and Belichick is because you lost to I beat you twice that all of a sudden those super bowls count for more. 00:41:04 Speaker 5: Yes, Marvin Well, I think we're missing Michael strahand Ocu Mejora, Justin Tugg, Chris Canty. 00:41:09 Speaker 6: Those guys had a little something to do with the Wings. 00:41:11 Speaker 2: Final hour on this Thursday coming up? Why am I yelling? Charles Barkley will stop by? And you see Lebron may be finishing his career in Cleveland, And what about Giannis's future
