We've approached this thing from every angle. The judge advert gets done in your
case. What about an appeal? They're not accepting more appeals. Bottom line
is you disobeyed the direct order. You've been discharged. You served your unit,
your core, and your country with on your side. Walk away with
dignity. Colonel, I'm a Marine, The lapsed fan presents Under the Cinematic.
Yeah, I love to talk film. I have come here to chew
bubble gum and kick out they break go. You're going nowhere under the cinematt
out my pickup guns. Bad things happen to people I don't like. Leave
a movie to make? Can we all pull together here to make movies?
On our last episode of Under the Cinemat, we talked about The Ten Commandments,
starring wrestler and footballer What He Strode, released in nineteen fifty six.
Exactly fifty years later. The tradition of wrestlers featuring in Hollywood motion pictures would
continue, as WWE Films would release their second of their initial three movie rollout.
It is time for the Marine to wage war under the Cinemat. There
was no connection to Ten Commandments there that was so forced. I mean,
I am just so aggravated. That's exactly. It's the night then mission accomplished.
It's exactly why apparently you came to play. Well, I'll tell you
what I think. Under the cinemats time is now the marine? Baby?
Are you ready for another? They're under the cinemat journey? What are you
ready for? Six weeks? Every marine movie I am going to be hard
to find for the next several weeks. I'm gonna pull a Hogan and Bishof
and fly back from the Cody Yoming deals going on in New York. Yeah.
Yeah, I'm unplugging my phone and you're not gonna see me until three
hours before the pay per views live. And I want to have him meeting
in the trailer. Ah, And you know what, this is the best
one. It's all downhill from here, it's all. And this is not
a good movie. This is not a good movie. Have you seen it?
So we're doing part one? This is the this is the Marine,
this is the original mur Marine. Yes, I've seen chunks of it,
seen the whole thing. Oh god, it's it's uh. He got it's
good. It's good to know one thing. At least John Cena got better
as an actor. You know he got better. He's as bad in this
movie. Yeah. Oh yeah, yeah, he's he's really bad. I
mean it's it's all, it's all bad. The less hair, the better,
the acting chops. Oh god. So let's stag right in here.
So we we've talked about in the previous mainly the Rundown and See No Evil
that we discussed the formation of WW Films, which you know now is called
um WWE Studios, Right, that's what it is. W Studios sounds right,
all right, And you know, asking him, you know what,
I was just thinking to myself, what is WW Films? What what is
it? You know, what's what's the idea behind it all? WW Films
is a division of World Rushing Entertainment, and we like to use our superstars
engaged in other activities in which our audience would like to see them. Well,
we're looking at the first time the movie. We're looking at character driven
actions. What appealed to us about this concept of the marine was that really
it's it's a simple story and there's a lot of action. I see,
all right, where is that? I see? You know, I'm just
you know, I just want to ask some of the question now, Yeah,
yeah, yeah, how are wrestling in action films a lot? I
mean, you know, I think, you know, could could wrestlers make
a smooth transition into a into action movies? An action adventure is obviously an
extension, a logical extension of what we do, because part of what we
do on ww each and every week is action adventure. It's not a leap
of faith whatsoever to take a multi talent individual like John Cena to take him
from the ring and put him in a full lengked feature film. I see,
Well, it's all there. I feel nothing needs to be said.
It's like an AI voice Advince, really is that? That's from the behind
the scenes. Those those are both from the behind the scenes feature at on
the on the DVD release of It's Funny. As long as WWB Films was
around, I can never remember hearing sound of Vince McMahon himself, no know,
in his own voice, talking about the idea. Well, I think
this was because this was supposed to be the one, you know, this
was supposed to be the It's weird, another one of these weird scenarios that
I really couldn't get. Maybe someone else can help me out there. But
as I was doing Reacharch. There really isn't much talk about what happens in
between production and the release of the movie, because we're talking a good year
and a half from when the movie is shot to when the movie is released.
And it's very bizarre. It's very very bizarre. And so if it
had been released, you know, the typical turnaround of a film, this
would have easily been before no see my evil whatever, the ice cream Man,
whatever's called um, the k movie that's called ice cream Man, like
I ye evil man, and then it was something good, good fucker or
whatever the hell his name is, and then then it became sen no evil,
right, so I scream man. Um. So you know, the
question then becomes, you know what what what film should this be? Obviously
we know it's the Marine The WWE in in two thousand and three announced that
they had greenlit three feature length UH theatrical Motion Entertainment vehicles. Well, thank
god for that, Yes we have UM, well we're gonna WW Films will
make its its official debut with three feature length theatrical motion entertainment vehicles for if
you can read it. First piece of sound again from Vince, because I
believe what he says and you can cut it as soon as he says it.
But he says something along the lines of they want to see our super
stars engaged in other activities. They'd like to see them engaged in WB films
is a division of world rushing entertainment, and we like to use in our
superstars engaged in other activities in which our audience would like to see them the
most words, salad, other activities that are universe, would like to see
them in. I mean, Vince, we're talking about starting in a movie
or are you talking about like securities, fraud engaged in other activities? It
sounds like a fucking indictment. What are they all? Are you doing?
Other? Like like a covert ops here like what else? And other activities?
Vince? What you mean is starring in movies? I mean, I
mean in which they acting like they do week to week, right perform action
stunts for right, performing stunts and fake fights like they do week to week.
So they would like to see them as engaged in activities such as uh,
I don't know, being in a Smith movie and weird but shot in
Canada? I think brother? What they shot? Shot? Who shooting dude?
Who's shooting brother? What who's there talk about another epidore Olver bro My
bach brother Yeah bach um Yeah. So the um in July and July two
thousand and three. It's kind of horrifying to think that W Films really does
go back that far. We're talking twenty plus years now that this fucking company
has been doing this shit the Hollywood Reporter and just it always amazes me when
they get into the Hollywood Reporter, any of these fucking you know, this
is like their dream. This is wet dreams right here. Getting into the
main entertainment trades, they announced uh WW Films had purchased a script from writer
Alan McElroy, who he's likely you know, all things considered, he's actually
a pretty solid not necessarily in terms of quality depends on your taste, but
in terms of of of notoriety. Um, he's got some stuff. He
did Halloween four, which if you're anyone, if you you know, if
you're a fan of the Halloween franchise, that that middle trilogy, which is
kind of forgotten. Um, it's it's considered the best out of those three
between four and six. Uh. He did the Spawn movie. Um,
and he also did that absolutely atrocity ballistic X versus sever I remember seeing trailers
for that all the time in college. That fucking do you remember? This
movie was um Antonio Banderis and uh uh lucy low dumbest fucking thing. So
here's what they wrote. On July ninth, WW Films has smacked down a
high six figure sum for an untitled A Shouldn't Pitch by screenwriter Alan McElroy.
The pitch is being developed as one of the first features for World Wrestling Entertainments
Los Angeles based Film Division, which is headed by President Joel Simon WWW brass
and it was keeping a tight choke hold on the pitch's plot except to describe
it as quote high concept. McElroy will pen the original screenplay, use me,
what does high concept mean? High concept usually is, um, it's
it's usually just uh, i'ant to describe it. But like Armageddon's a high
concept film, you know, Armageddon with Bruce Willis. Yeah, that's high
concept. Like it's like it's big, it's you know, a lot of
special effects, a lot. You know, it's gonna cost money. That
kind of shou say, okay, got it. You know, Um,
I don't want to say epic because that's not. Generally that's not always the
case. McElroy will pen the original screenplay, with Simon shepherding the project along
with WWE Films VP Jed Blaugrund. Joel Simon said, well, you know,
ww Films is here to extend the WW brand and mainstream Hollywood movies and
television shows, and this story does that perfectly. Are you interested in seeing
the w brand extend itself into the mainstream Hollywood feature films. Uh? No.
In fact, as a completely insane devoted wrestling fan, I never even
made the time to watch these things exactly exactly, Um. And I avoided
this one too. I remember that I was like, no, no,
I don't want to. I have no interest in seeing it. First time
I saw it was this week. So Um. Eventually twentieth century Fox would
would come on board as their distributor, which something is a pretty big deal
actually, especially during that period. I mean business, We're talking you know
business in the in the early to mid two thousands, you know, is
it is it as significant as it seems to me that they would get such
a studio as twenty century Fox to distribute their their crappy movie. Um,
yeah, I guess I ll comes down to dollars and cents, you know,
but it just still seems to you know, they don't care as much
as you know, anyone can get. I mean, look, you know,
if the rumors are true, like and Disney was interested in by the
w it's got nothing to do with you know, wrestling has got to do
with some kind of bottom line, and I get that, but it always
is a big shock to me when when a wrestling you know, WWE movie,
or even a wrestler gets into a movie that is in plays a lead
role in a movie that is more mainstream and has like a legit studio behind
it. Yeah, this is really the first endorsement of John Cena as a
sure movie star. Yeah yeah, it wasn't WW taking this plunge with like
third tier distributors. And I remember, of all the things I can say
about the WW films, I remember this one being the only one I ever
saw on like HBO where it was like promoted and it was like you know
what I mean, you know the premium cable HBO Showtime that they'll sort of
do like sizzle reels of movies that are coming soon. Yeah, this this
was among them, and I was like Wow, this this made that cut.
None of the other WW films did at all, not not really not.
Maybe I would say maybe the Rundown might have because that was kind of
a big deal, or maybe this sup count that, right, But but
if we're talking about like legit, not I mean, but the Rock is
obviously different on many levels. Right in the call with halle Berry there's no
wrestler in that. Really, Graddy whys in it? But right? But
um, besides that, this, yeah, I remember this, This was
getting They were really pushing this hard as being something something specially the big question
is did it? Did it become special? We're gonna find out. Hey,
guess your representative to be in those twentieth century Fox negotiations, are you
Emmanuel Endeavor? Fucking hell, look at that full circle. It's serendipity that
you put this one on the agenda. Then you did that before you knew
that Endeavor was going to get the company. Yeah, this was planned before
that that fucking Sarah depiction. Sure, as he stands under the cinemat why
wouldn't it? And I still I didn't even know anyway, I had no
idea that Endeavor was involved until this week, until I started doing research on
it. Wow, that's fucking crazy. It's hilarious. Um variety, you
know, given that the um given that the uh you know, putting it.
Just to be clear, the devor would do what in that instance they
would search for They they they were nego. So basically they would serve as
ww's agent in that situation, and they gave for people to do it to
negotiate the distributor. So wwe considered to be the production house, whereas you
need somebody else to distribute. So Endeavor would have made the link with twenty
Center Box exactly exactly, so they would have and you know, you have
Endeavor behind you, You've got I liked this theory, this thesis of like
Ari Emmanuel, the reason this Kate this deal came together was because Ari was
one guy who made Vince feel like he was as big of a deal as
he wanted to be in his yes right. So, like, does does
Vince working alone or even with any buddy else in Hollywood get twenty century Fox
to the table? I don't think so. Does Vince working with anybody else
get Foxed at the table for the SmackDown deal? I don't think so,
though. I think technically the credit goes to Nick con for that one.
The sort of groundwork had been laid because there was like this conflict of interest
wherein our Emmanuel had had negotiated UFC Television, Neil the ESPN as well,
and they of course bought UFC in two thousand whatever it was, seventeen whatever
it was, and h and Alri he was ready to negotiate WWE. But
the thought was, there's a conflict of interest if he's negotiating with Fox for
both UFC and WWE. So they they sort of spun are out of that
negotiation process. But I'm here, I'm here to uh speculate, and I
still played a key role inputting that door in the first place. Nick conta,
listen, I don't. I'm with you. I don't listen. I
mean, I don't know much about Nick Cohn's previous he was Nick Con.
Yes, oh god, and he's he's totally I mean, that's that's why
he has a job. It's that he represents a lot of like sports personalities,
like people you'd see doing analysis. Oh god, Fox or ESPN.
Oh my god, I mean that's it, this is this is that's it.
They in a weird way. I kind of respect him in that regard
the WW in that regard in Vince McMahon, because they know they have no
chance in hell that's gonna um to really get in the door without significant help.
And in a weird way, you know, especially when you've got a
money client like the w w E. I would imagine that Ari Emmanuel's job
is very much make this guy believe he can do anything. Yeah, And
well, well Ari does that? I mean Ari, Yeah, you know,
because the other side of the table isn't thinking Vince. They're thinking Ari.
Right, No, right, That's who they're dealing with. That's who
they really care to keep the relationship up with us. Their nexus to a
whole lot of other money too, exactly. And they're gonna sell and and
and and it's like he's going to sell them on on on what's going to
happen. He's gonna make them believe that they're gonna have these like a legitimate
chance to make a ship ton of money, got it? Um? So
yeah, So Variety wrote wrote an article about wrestlers in motion pictures and the
success of such and if it is successful. This is from January twenty seven,
two thousand and five. With the exception of Dwayne the Rock Johnson,
grapplers haven't fared well on screen. In fact, ringstars like Hulk Hogan have
failed miserably. Brother, what all my movies made money? Brother? Acventure,
comed acture, comedy dude, McMahon said it was it's because he wasn't
involved in helping guide those wrestlers. We had nothing to do with Holgan's movie
choices, and they weren't great. You know, the Hollywood formulas to take
a big muscular guy, put them in a ridiculous film and make fun of
him. See, we're different. We understand their limitations and where they performed
best, and we produce the equivalent of a two hour movie on television on
Monday and Thursday, using fourteen cameras for the live Monday. You know,
the Monday Lives not a real quote. This is a real quote. The
storytelling process is similar, and this is a logical extension of our star power.
Oh my god. McMahon said he plans to set his self financed films
piecemeal at studios. Each will have the benefit of the marketing and promotion exposure
of wrestling telecasts broadcast in fourteen languages and covering most of the world. Though
McMahon is a Hollywood newcomer, his formula harks back to the golden days of
the Hollywood studios. Could you write that down place? Can you put it?
Put down that? Even though I'm new at this, I do believe
that my formula goes back to the old you know, Golden Heart, heard
Heart? Could you say hard Parkins in there? Could you put hark?
Could you hark back Hark? The arrold Angels sing? Brother? What did
you I mean? Is this an accent adventure comedy? Brother? Dude?
I want to know his action venture comedy? Dude, Terry, Terry,
listen, this is just action, right, I know. I said you're
you're You're my only guy for action adventure comedy. This is just action adventures,
just action, Terry is There's not even any adventure, action, no
adventure, no comedy. Pal Brother. Oh all right, Well, who
who you got going? Dude? Who are you pushing? Brother Terry.
I'm not pushing anybody. I'm just putting John Cena as the lead of this
action only vehicle. Now, if I've got my timeline right, you said
twenty o two, I mean it's probably got the belt when this is beginning
put together? Seriously, I know, brother, Brother, I want to
talk about w t B films. Dude, what's the deal? Brother?
But yeah, it's like Terry beats Triple HD backlash and then two weeks later,
you know, what do you do with films? Stage? And Brother's
more to talked about a couple of things since all right, no problem.
You think he's going to talk about the title reign and creative for the you
know brother stuff? Brother, just not a question? Dude? What ww
films? Dude? What? Oh? We We're proud of that initiative.
I mean, it's a it's a new it's a new enterprise in the logical
ext logical extension of the w B brand for sure. What what you what
do you want to know? Well? Brother, I'm thinking, dude,
what if we have kind of an extension of the extension? Brother? What's
the marine? Dude? By the way, what do you get? Who's
the marine? Brother? Like, who's the third man? It's like when
he meets at this shop, Dude, who's the marine? Brother? Excuse
me? Who's the marine? Well we're gonna find out, aren't we.
Oh? I just like that answer? Brother and Brother were you mocking me
before when you said natural extensions? Dude, Well, I'm not on steroidst
and these are real extensions. I'm in my hanging out of my bad man.
I just want I was thinking, brother, what we could do?
You know, kind of as a sub you know, a sub sub studio,
Brother, rec a sub. We have whole Comania films, dude,
underneath kind of a subsidiary of films. Big Show pokes his head in the
room when he says sub So Patterson, Um, here we go, this
is great. Um. He has service contracts with all his wrestlers. And
if a studio wants Steve Austin or what they're talking about catering or the talent
service contracts with it, will it will listen? Yeah, this is the
idea. And if studio wants Steve Austin or another wrestler, it will have
to make a loan out deal. To the difference is I'm putting my money
where my mouth is, investing an unknown talent, but rewarding them with big
time back end earnings that don't have Hollywood, that don't have Hollywood accounting methods,
directly back end earnings like Rakishi's absolutely one one signature grappling villain who won't
be transitioning to the screen McMahon, who says he will limit his exposure to
his TV broadcast. Well, it's not really a good use of resources to
have the CEO sitting on a movie set saying the same lines over and over
and over again. Oh that's why you're not going to be in a movie,
right, not because you'd absolutely suck at it. Maybe he'd be good,
I don't know now, he'd be awful, he'd be dreadful. He
needs that. There's something, there's something only that only works in wrestling about
Vince. And I don't just mean, you know, obviously if business savvy
wise, I mean it's most most wrestlers, most wrestlers. It's kind of
the way, you know. And he's got that times thirty like that,
Yeah, only in wrestling charisma. Ah. Well, if Hollywood doesn't know
what a book a muscleman like Vince claims he does, who would Vince mcman
choose to lead Wite films into the next wave. Well? The Hollywood Reporter,
again in July of two thousand and four, announced that a quote,
this is a quote a professional wrestler known to fans of the upn weekly series
WWE SmackDown. As the self proclaimed Doctor of Fuganomics was in negotiations to take
the lead in the marine, they not say John Cena. They did after
that, Oh my god, but they put self proclaimed doctor of fucking omics.
This is two thousand and four. This is two thousand and four.
That's really telling. That's before they put the strap on him. Oh,
this is there's more. There's more to this tale that I I that truly
baffled me. So John Cena obviously um slater to be the w's next movie
star. Yet Sina again, like you just said, not to be not
champion yet and um almost a year. It was almost a year and we're
talking July nine, two thousand and four. That's almost a year before he's
the guy. I don't even know if they thought he was going to be
the guy at that point. It's good question they probably did. Yeah.
Yeah, I mean, I know you got that big that big win at
WrestleMania that we saw at WrestleMania twenty. But I don't necessarily know if I
thought he was going to be the next champion or like the next guy.
Um. So, nonetheless, this is uh, you know, apparently this
is you know, being a movie stars one of John Seene's dreams, and
he says, so here and a clip again from that behind the scenes feature
raft here. I think, I mean, can you get more ww producer
is so WWDB documentary? Bullshit? Seriously, it's unbelievable. It would be
a lot of people's dream to do this. It would also be a lot
of people's dream to be a professional wrestler was certainly my dream to do both.
I came about being a pro wrestler with a sense of good timing,
went to went to school out on the West Coast, really learned my craft.
Did it because I loved it. I would work my job in the
day and they go wrestle at night. I was playing like a superman Clark
Kent. And then one day long came the higher ups and said, kid,
we're gonna give you a chance. Don't blow it. And I took
my opportunity. I did the best with it. There stands a man,
folks, the champ is here and it's name. It's John Sena. After
seeing me weekend and week out on national television, the higher ups from Hollywood
and finally come calling and they say, okay, kid, we're gonna give
you a shot. Don't so here. I am in stage two of dream
World, you know, trying to make things happen, and I've been given
my shot, and I'm really trying to take it as serious as I can.
Except for one thing. This part was not written with John Cena in
mind. Right, Um, this is an upcoming This is an expert from
the March fifteenth, two thousand and four Wrestling Observer regarding ww Films. Melita
rights upcoming movie projects from the company. Besides Jordanando Dilmoorthy, the Triple H
Vehicle will be two movies starring Glenn Jacobs, a horror movie as yet unnamed
in Fredy Krueger Mode and an action movie called The Anvil. They also have
another film called The Marine, similar to the movie First Blood, as a
vehicle for Steve Austin. Wow, this summer Stone Cold Steve Austin is the
marine of Vince McMahon Joint or if you're in Philadelphia of Vince McMahon John brother
today alish hell. I mean, it's like it was like Steve austin In,
like actually, in a weird way that might have actually been a better
movie about that might have been a better movie. Um, I can see
the condemned kind of extending into the marine. Yeah, we'll get into that
in a moment. But um so Sina uh did a he did a GQ
video interview, um, I think last year when he was promoting Peacemaker,
and he actually shared some detail about the whole situation in in that interview.
So here here is Juan Sina. This was originally a role that was written
for Steve Austin, and two weeks before shooting Steve backed out for whatever reason.
That's that's a conversation with him. But Vin said, hey, I
got to send you to Australia. It's okay. What am I doing?
He said, well, you're gonna be in a movie, okay, when
I got to send you in ten days? But I pretty much left us
a small meeting in his office and packed my bags and went to be in
the movies, which I knew nothing about. That's so Vince, like,
can you imagine an actual Hollywood production, Like, well, if somebody pulled
out that soon, like turning around that quickly and replacing it, there would
be like a six month shutdown in reut period because and there. I think
there is. Actually I think Scena's fucking oh really, I think is pulling
some wrestling bullshit because because he's talking two weeks, so the production starts in
the fall of two thousand and four. All right, Hollywood Reporter article that
we just read July. So what's this two weeks bullshit? Maybe two months
I can buy two months, but not two weeks. Well, maybe you
had to be there way before production began. Maybe No, No, I
don't think so, because he was on TV all the time. He didn't
he didn't get off TV till till till the fall. It was a meeting
or something. I mean, who knows. I mean maybe maybe he had
to do maybe he had to go to maybe he had to go to meetings
in LA or something like that. But the way John Cena makes it sound
like is that he has to go, oh right now and make the fucking
movie. Here's the difference between how he was talking back in that featurette and
how he talks now, Like, I am doing the experience voice so all
the time now here I am. I'm a regular guy. I'm an actor.
But John Jesus Christ's piece of garbage. He's a great guy. Yeah
right, I know. I'll tell you you know, there's there's not one
person in this world who I have never been able to really get a good
read of who they really are besides John. And that's why he is who
he is. John Cena is literally like I don't I can't imagine that his
that his wife knows who he is. Nicole Garcia Kolis he is so like,
I'm gonna play a clip later, but I watched this whole interview this
for later on. But um, he did it. He was did an
interview on the UM what's his Graham? Um? Fuck's his name in the
UK? Norton, Graham Norton. I think it's Graham Norton. Um,
it's great. I love I love any clip on that. I don't never
see a clip on YouTube like that comes up in my feet. It's like,
oh, like this isn't Graham Norton. And I'm like, oh I
gotta watch this. Um oh Graham Melson from and I've never read any of
his books. Okay, anyway, he's also he's also a UK talk show
host as well. Um, like you see Sina is, He's he's very
charming, like he comes across so charming, but there is a there is
something about it where I'm like, why does he feel like a robot who
is well being charming? If you saw Total Bella's you can never unsee that
Johnson exactly exactly, and that's where you really see this guy's actually trying to
create a new version of him self and we're just standing here acting like we
don't notice. But he's like it's just so bizarre. Every time you see
you hear an interview. Now, there is something so mechanical about him,
Like he's like he's changing like the ultimate like um not artful dodger, but
he's like he's somebody that's gonna like we thread the needle so carefully that like
he'll offend, He'll be he'll be offensive to no one's sensibilities. You know.
He's like, you know what I bet, I bet, I bet,
I bet you he has got he has He is so control, so
much control over his life. He's like, access will be the mill.
Sure, yeah, you know, I bet he's got so much dark shit
going on, but he just like he lets the people who need to know
in on it. And he is and and and you know, and he
has all of his ducks in a row. Well he didn't you remember?
Um? And I'm sure some of this is pumped up for the television cameras
because I don't think much. Uh. He had Nicole, you know,
Dicky Bella sign this incredibly extensive. It wasn't even a prenup for a wedding.
It was an agreement she had to sign to move into his house.
Well you didn't do that, I know. She's like, I know,
my kid, you kidding me? And then born, you'd got to sign
something here. This is an everyone goes on here Daniel Bryan dress up in
a three piece suit so he can have a dinner at his house, Like
it's eighteen fifty six, you know, like, dude, what do you
candles? No, no, no electricity on past five o'clock? What do
you chase? And John it's only it's only candle light that lights his house.
Oh and just what do you before Barry Linden out there, before he
met an actual tailor, his suits were like, you know, flapping in
the breeze. He had these massive, massive suits and he's like he's trying
to figure out how to be like a fancy guy, you know, because
he's got all this money, but he's not a fancy guy, you know.
And and what I love is that, you know, you get that,
you get this John Cena who thinks that being this well dressed, well
quoft, well calibrated, well calibrated individual in that same and that Graham norm
thing. It's like, you get John Cena literally sitting next to like he's
up tight, like he's up he's upright with this excellent posture, wearing his
shirt and his tie, and he's talking and and like being his like robotic,
charming self. And then next to him you get fucking Matthew McConaughey,
who's fucking not shaven, you know, just he's like wearing a open collar
black shirt. He's like slouched down, you know, Like I mean,
do you see this is a movie star is sitting next to you, John,
Like it's not in your place exactly. Like look at Silicon Valley billionaires.
They all you like, if you dress up a lot, that means
your mid level, right, Like if you're a billionaire, that means you
don't have to dress up anymore. That you can walk around me. If
you come in, you come into fucking work with your with your underwear and
that's it. Yeah, you know, I'm just I'm casual today. Whatever.
I got a bubble vest. You guys your casual Friday. I got
casual every day. That's why people, I swear to God, it's why
people love Dana White because his whole fucking career for the most part, although
not in those early days, those early days when UFC was was hemorrhaging money,
you better believe he was suited up like a fucking realtor. You better
believe he was in his finest suit and tie. But as time when it
was like, Okay, it's actually a sign of success that you don't have
to wear a suit. But Sina like doesn't get that. You know What's
funny, The only the only, um, the only people who I think
look like stars in when they dress up in suits on like a regular thing
are wrestlers. Heel wrestlers. Yeah, because it's sort of like a flash
thing, right, It's it's a heal thing. It's it's like ostentatious thing.
Right. Scene is trying to do it like for this. Honestly,
he's doing it for the same reason you wear a suit to your prom in
high school. Right, So, so moms, the moms will be like,
oh, non't you look so handsome? Don't you clean up nice?
He's still doing that. Yeah, and he's already he's like one of the
he's a big movie star. Yeah, he doesn't have to do this anymore.
He doesn't have to look whatever party has in his mud. But that's
to him like thinking this way, dressing this way, and whatever else whatever.
Dressing that way. He thinks him abused his personality with is the only
reason he's where he's at, and he's got to maintain and keep that,
keep that going, yea exactly. Um did you know about the Steve Auston
thing by the way, did you know that it brings a bell? Yeah?
Um, I had no clue. So Austin did comment on the situation
himself, but you know, he didn't comment recently. He commented way back
in two thousand and seven. He actually made a comment on Slash Film.
He said this, Now, We've been talking about doing movies forever towards the
end of my career, and the first one that I was gonna do was
gonna be The Marine. I got the damn script of the Marine, and
I didn't really like it too much, so I passed. But The Condemned
semed like a cool story, cool cast shop for a lot of outdoors.
Just seemed like, I don't know, for some reason, it grabbed me
and it was something I saw myself doing and people would expect me to be
in and I've seen with the right thing to do. If you compare The
Marine to The Condemned, this is a way better movie. It is.
Well. The other one would have been two thousand and two when he was
given that Scriptwousen probably twousand and three, two thousand and four, they got
the script two thousand and three and two three. I thought it was maybe
tied to you know, the hiatus when he took his ball and went home
in mid two thousand and Oh yeah, yeah, no, I mean let
me see you go back July ninth, two thousand and three. I mean
he was retired, you know, it was well after, but that would
have been you know, when they got the script, so that you know,
that would have been a good you know, really good timing for him.
But um, yeah, so so that that's why, so like you
gotta ask, you got that's a that's a conversation for Steve Austin. Oh
no, it isn't he just didn't like the fucking script and you did,
so, yeah, that's that's the conversation. He's probably telegraphing like something where
it was seen as probably trying to hint that it was more like a fight
in an argument than it was. I mean, also to Steve making it
that simplistic, but it maybe perhaps he would have liked the script if there
were one hundred other things to consider. I mean, also too, it's
just kind of funny, like, you know, they make it like such
a weird thing like that, But there was certainly plenty of time to find
a w B replacement. You know, It's not like they were It's not
like the movie was was reliant on fucking, you know, Brad Pitt,
and they were looking for a new Brad Pitt or someone to replaced Brad Pitt.
No, it's like you're looking for a guy who's on roster. Like
you have all these guys here. It's not gonna be a problem to fucking
find one of these guys. You know, you'll just you'll get an actor,
You'll get one of your fucking superstars. They actually could put on the
road and make money with a wrestling with Steve. You know what I mean,
there's no way to extend that into the actual wrestling show and make money
until you Yeah, right to make money is the key, because I certainly
did with that fucking idiotic sheriff gimmick that he did. Oh yeah, No,
I meant like a guy that you could actually present as your headline wrestler,
right, that's not he was like, you know, supporting cast member
on Raw. No. Um, so, uh, I did want to
talk about because you know, he made that dream comment in his U in
his uh the interview from the DVD feature at there, and you know,
I realized, I don't know if we've ever talked about it. Um,
I'm sure you know more about it than I did than I do. But
I was like, yeah, well, I think there's a good an opportunity
to go back to John Cen a little bit look into him a little bit
in terms of his his build up to where he is now, because we've
certainly covered enough on the main show about his you know, his his main
event run at times, especially with the Wrestling Any Journey at all. Um,
But uh, I didn't know, I don't know much about his time
in West Newbury until now Um, he did an interview a year ago with
the the in the Envelope podcast, an acting podcast from from backstage dot com,
which is one of the it's a good, big source for actors.
And I was like kind of surprised too that this that he fucking made it
as like, this is kind of crazy. I mean that that to me
is a sign if you're if you're doing an interview on like backstage, I
considered to be a much more you know, like take me seriously as an
actor type thing than right than you know, most most other places. So,
um, anyway, he shared, Uh, he shared about his childhood
and his introduction to theatricality. My dad was really theatrical and really he still
is to this day a showman, a shaman. I found out in digging
deeper into my mom story that she had been involved as well in theater as
a late teen early twenty individual, and then had five of us, so
she chose to be a model instead of very grateful for that. M So,
you know, I think the individual there before I was an idea,
and my parents, I think, by just being grossly outnumbered, also embraced
our creativity a lot because it kept us busy. You know, I think
us making games or doing whatever, pretending we were sports icons. And my
dad always loved watching wrestling. We would never watch sport like. I never
had to catch with my dad, but we would always like beat the hell
out of each other and watch every bit of wrestling that was on TV,
a WA n WA, WWE that you know at the time, Gorgeous Ladies
Wrestling. I remember being able to stay up late to watch Saturday nights main
event Gorgeous Laies Wrestling, So that was always a through line. U had
one piece of drama in high school called that Championship Season, and it was
pushed on me, and I'm very grateful that it was by a teacher named
Witt Wales, and he took a bunch of unlikely performers and turned them into
performers. So we did a very small side stage show for twenty people,
and he kind of saw something in me at an early age that I never
revisited until, you know, I kind of made my way in the WWE,
but I got a taste of that, and I've always wanted to bring
people together. You know. As a team captain, I was responsible for
getting the team motivated and that could be between, you know, giving them
braveheart type fire up speeches or doing something absolutely foolish to get them to laugh
through double session practices. So I always kind of had the bravery to try
and fail at those things. I don't want to say it was any good,
but I always had the bravery at least try bravery to at least try
very to fail, very to fail. But I didn't know a lot of
that. Yeah, um, as a you know. And then he started
working out officially as a teenager. I think he said junior high at one
point. I think I heard him say I think he was twelve or something
like that when he started weight training, and that it wasn't I assume you
know this that it wasn't. It wasn't really for exercise. It was because
he was for other reasons. As he shared on the Discovery Channels Inside Wrestling
School documentary, he talked about his weight training origins. I got a lift.
I wanted to beat the crap out of him. That big legs,
big legs. There you go. You get your first wait set and they
give you them a pamphlet, put that picture of Lou Frigger on the cover,
and he's like jacked out of his gourd, and then you buy a
couple of muscle magazines and see these guys who looked like superhuman. I had
those pictures of these guys on my wall, and every day when I woke
up, they were there, and then when I went to sleep, they
were there. Every time I work out, they were there. I pretty
much got that vision in my head, and by the time I was a
late teenager, I decided I want to try to do my best to do
what I can do to look like them, didn't didn't you show me that
documentary? Um? I think, yes, a long time ago. Yeah,
it's the one where he does the promo as prototype prototype right. Yes,
Um, I was. Do you know any you know the history about
him getting bullied, like what that was all about? Yeah, wasn't it
because he would dress up like mc hammer. Yeah, he'd do he did
like school hip hop stuff. You talked about it too, I was.
I was actually very not excited, but I was. He doesn't talk about
in other places, but he went on the Whiskey Ginger podcast and he actually
talked about it. I got bullied for listening to hip hop music growing up
in West Newbury Massachusetts. What do you mean two hundred people? It was
it was jeans and rock and roll and like hair band metal. And in
the late eighties early nineties, I loved hip hop and I would dress like
kid and playhouse party style. Oh yeah, rayon polka dots. Oh yeah,
like shoes you name it, like the crisscross pants on backwards. Come
on. Hard to pee, but super easy to shit. Yeah yeah,
way easier to shit. I mean I should do that now. I don't
know why you can ship and walk with those yeah. Uh. And I
just I got harassed and beat up every day and it but it would it
would be easy to just be like, Okay, I'll dress the way they
want to know. It'll pick on me anywhere. I'd got even more like
I never I never really used physical violence to be at violence. I just
was myself even more right. And I think I've always just had a weird
courage to be like, man, I should try that. I should try
this and see where it goes. Um, it's just nice, isn't that
great? He just he's just trying to be himself. Yeah, for sure,
man, get paid off this the whole gimmick and still fucking feels weird
when he talks about it. Fucking John Cena. Uh he made Uh,
he made some mink as a as a high school football player. Um,
he went to Cushing Academy. He went to fucking public schools first, then
he went to Cushing Academy and then named the try captain for the Springfield College
football team in two thousand and two. There wasn't did you write I should
check see if you wrote this article in the Globe? Did I know there
was one before mine? Um? This is from two thousand and two.
Were you there? Uh? They quoted his football coach, Mike DeLong,
who said it was like basically saying he wasn't surprised that, you know,
Sena made the jump from football to wrestling professionally on television. Oh yeah,
yeah. It's that kind of personality. I could see him doing it.
He was a kind of person where if wrestling is what he wants to do,
if he's gonna he's gonna be wrestling, you know, and he'll be
your success with it. That's it awesome. Fucking Mike DeLong from Springfield State
College. Uh, he majored in Do you know when he majored in?
Um? I think I do know this? Accounting? No physical education kind
of Uh what's it called? Um? You got it? Uh? Sports
therapy? Uh? What's what the fuck is it? Kinesiology? Kinesiology?
Yes, thank you? Study of human movement? Lapsed fan Wrestling podcast with
Jaws. Lapsed fan Wrestling Podcast. Brother, Bro, what do you say
you study human movement? Dude? Brother? What do you mean human?
What do you mean by human movement? Dude? Why do you have to
specify human? Brother? Brother? What would among the movements be? I
don't know. Rolling me up from behind, brother is kind of long?
Listen things you study dude? Like reaching up between the guy's legs and rolling
them up. Brother, that's he that's a movement done by humans. Dude?
Are we talking? Could he? Sully? Brother? What? Why
a college would fucking a lot? I'll say myself. You know, I
know colleges have weird fucking and you know, majors and shit, but really
that's what Like, where's the where's the uh you know, professional position?
I guess I guess a a physical therapist. But aren't you studying physical therapy?
Like my cousin is a physical therapist and she studied physical therapy or sports
medicine or whatever. Anologists as in you, um, you study the body,
but you don't necessarily treat the body. Okay, you know you're like
you're more doing like experimentation and what really like are we talking there? There's
a career in there, like you what do you what do you get a
job? They're doing that at a hospital? Yeah, like you could be
like you could be somebody who like you know, make makes judgments on what
the correct course of treatment is, but you don't necessarily do it. Tell
you what, I'm gonna make judgments on people who study kinesiology. All right,
That's that's fun. Um he did it and uh he you know,
did was able to put it to good use apparently he uh he talked about
that in the Envelope podcast. Next page next page. I really got to
a point where I tried to early on apply my degree in in fields like
that were direct connections. I tried to get a job in the fitness industry
in strength and conditioning, and I just came up short in every avenue.
And then when I was introduced to sports entertainment, WWE excuse me. It
was a way for me to remain athletic, and the reason I chose kinesiology
is because I loved working out and I wanted to go to college to play
football, and I knew I wasn't going to do anything after that, but
I at least wanted to get my four years of playing football in and kinesiology
not only got me a degree, so my parents were happy, but it
also learned I learned a lot of about how to take care of myself.
So I have been using my college degree more than I ever would have imagined,
especially you know, as somebody who tries to maintain good physical activity at
forty five years old. But it's it's such indirect like I keep grabbing snippets
from from classrooms. It's crafted my training over the years. Uh certainly my
recovery and you know, all the processes to get my body to move healthier.
So it's something that I rely on a lot more than I thought I
would. I thought I would be going to a four year school to play
football and get a degree to make my parents happy. Yeah, he's you
know, he's a musclehead, Like you know, he's exactly what do you
think because he I don't know, he kind of skates over this, but
what he really wanted to be was a competitive bodybuilding Yeah. Yeah, yeah,
Well I moved to California and then got hooked up with Batsman Squald and
he went right into uh you know, he was a janitor at Gold's gym.
Yeah. He was a you know, one of those guys that like
went did Venice Beach or whatever, seeking like opportunities to be tanned and ribbon
going to muscle Beach. He's like, he comments that he's like one of
the last kind of he was like the last generation of people who um like
really used muscle Beach as an attempt to do something, yeah or something like
that. He was cast in um a upn reality show called man Just Play
Just just what I'm excited to talk about that? Um so uh yeah so
also too before he left for California, I guess he was he was an
assistant, he said, an assistant assistant assistant assistant to the assistant groundskeeper to
golf course. Okay, good to know that. Um and uh yeah,
so then he like we you know, a friend, he was gonna be
a marine. Is that ironic or is that is that is that coincidental?
I don't know. He certainly had the haircut. I know, Oh my
god, he really did. But it is a coincidental that he was going
to be a marine and then decided not to be marine and then got a
job that would eventually make him marine. Or is it ironic that he would
deny being a marine and then I forget which of his brothers is a cop?
But like he looks like a family of marine called the Boys. Huh,
yeah, sounds a lot more Massachusetts Dan Sena, doesn't it Danny Sina?
Oh yeah, look Tim and Danny Sena a good friend of mine.
I look, I know him in high school. He's no angel. Okay,
typically I gotta become a Boston cop. Huh. For sure, Dan
Sena is somebody Mark Wahlberg would play in a movie. Yes, and and
and uh, Tom Brady and Matt Damon's love child would play John Cena.
That's good. That's fucking good. I mean, I understand they're all from
Boston, But why do they have the exact same skeleton, Like why do
they look exactly? To say? That? Does not said him Wahlberg Damon
from the LA But nonetheless he's been he was in Boston enough, he counts.
I mean, it's weird. There's a weird face that gets over in
Boston. Weird, you know, I know, right, it's so fucking
weird like that that that I mean, he's even got a little a little
affleck at him too. I feel like she's a little but a little bit.
The smile I think is a kind of affleck. Yeah, yeah,
I know. It's fucking crazy. Um so, uh yeah, So his
friend tells him to he's gonna be He's gonna sign up for the Marines.
And then he's like his friend of his uh says, hey, you know
what I'm I'm trying to be a wrestler. I don't even know which one
it was. I'm trying to be a wrestler. And uh, he come
down to the facility in San Diego give it a try. And the next
thing you know, John Cena's got a career goal. And what didn't you
know? There's a documentary crew covering the whole fucking thing. And here these
is a highlight. This is a highlight reel of John cenaclipse from inside Wrestling
School. My name's John. Don't have any wrestling experience. I'm a big
fan. Former football player, just too small to keep on playing football.
I've always loved wrestling. I finally got a chance to come down to the
school, so I'll try it out. So it's all about for John Cena,
the choice is easy. I wish I had gotten some tips to come
down to this school earlier, but I've always wanted to do it, and
this is you know, this is a chance. It's a chance to do
it to me. He's a kind of guy who thrives on pressure. John
has one takes. I mean, he's got the look, he's he's got
the attitune, he's got the personality. I already busted open my eye.
Just all part of the game, you know, that's what happens when a
punch goes a ride. Today we're stalking up on the essentials. Huge container
is an omelet. That's a week right there to deal. This is good.
Usually I'm going through about forty pounds a week, so we're gonna stock
up a little bit on this stuff. Bonus kills, chicken breast thirty five
pounds. That's the meat for the week, breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
John Cena is developing a character called the Prototype. How Dare You Smelly
mock, an engineered genius like the prototype. I look in your genetic lunch
box and find a peanut butter and jelly sandwich with the crusts cut off.
Understand this, You, like the rest of the humanoid scum, look into
these eyes, and you go from a wrestler to a victim. Understand when
you get in the ring with the reigning up W champion, you have no
chance. I am fifty percent man, fifty percent machine. You are one
hundred percent fatality. Ah, everybody's pretty much young. I mean everybody in
here. We got a few guys like Ballads and like Sup was that kid
that have been wrestled for a while, But pretty much everybody is young.
Most of the guys who knew, like most of the guys you see,
have been training for numb one six eight months. The birth of the Prototype
is starting to bring John success both in and out of the ring. I'll
do anything to sell you a car. You getting the ring with me?
You got a deal, buddy, Come back. But wait, okay,
we have a deal. I real keep the up W title or ever,
because there is no one genetically give it me. I lost the belt humillion
in front of a crowd that I was supposed to dominate, Smellie cheated.
Obviously this was a fluke and it will never happen again. Cut the damn
paper. Bruce Richard said, you had a good match, and that's appreciation
enough for me. I think that's great. He said, good match.
That's good match. So I'm stoked. On this night, Team Hardcore,
Rio, Storm, the Sadist, and the Prototype absolutely popped the crowd.
A package was sent to the UPW headquarters. Inside were contracts from the WWF
for Team Hardcore and John the Prototype Scena John the Prototype, you know somebody
I forgot to mention too. By the way, I forgot to mention that
when he started working out like you like we like we played earlier, that's
when he would go to the Fosios Oh yeah, and fucking and and pose
for missus Fossio wow, and like show off his fucking like rip a shirt
off and show her show off his arms and ship. That's uh, that's
why you do it, hoping that somebody wants to see you flex, Hoping
that you know, a middle aged woman wants to see you know, go
further than that, maybe even but you know, I think, um,
I'm trying to remember if it was that documentary where he does the promo in
reverse. Seen that before, Yes, yeah it is, um, I
think it is. I I skimmed through it, so it might have been
been most impressed by that he did like a deal, whereas prototype he's a
robot and he says a sentence and then he's he says it like he's rewinding
himself. It was pretty cool, you know you could see that when you
saw that documentary. It's like, Okay, this guy like he's got it
because only did he have the look like every other bodybuilder out there, this
guy actually can talk. Well yeah, exactly. Now he's he's got Although
I do I really love I really love listening to him try to fucking try
to shelve that fucking accent of his Oh yeah, yeah, that's that's always
my favorite. Like Boston meat head goes to La to try to be like
famous. It's just that it's that guy in a bigger, faster, stronger.
Remember he was from Boston, the guy who said the sun still shining.
Oh, it's always the Boston guy who try The Boston try hard guy
is like the saddest I don't realizes that most like like a Boston guy who
thinks he's like who who has a lot of charisma for being like a fucking
towny Boston guy, right, has got maybe an eighth of the charisma of
a normal person, exactly exactly because it's a it's a charisma that only plays
and like, you know, yeah, it plays in in in places where
the sun shines like six months out of the year, right exactly where they
don't leave the six mile radius of the town. You know. It's like,
you don't leave Wakefield unless you go on vacation, and vacation is like
the fucking Revere for Wakefield. It's been getting hammered the whole time we've been
doing this pod. Just Bills from there, from Bill from there, and
Heath and my and my pal Heath because they're from there. Did you meet
Heath in La by the way, Yeah, right, the crazy ass long
hair. It was a fucking idiot brother. Um. Yeah, he's got
he's got He's got the thickest accent of anybody over No, h Heath,
It's like it is. It's it makes He's a funny He's got a great
sense of humor, and it makes things that would know and be funny even
funnier. Because he says it with that that that fucking Boston accent that he
asked. Um so uh, he says, we go, I canna play
this clip a little bit later because it ties into his later uh w W
stuff. But he says that he gets signed to a defensive contract because I
guess I didn't even realize that he this is really more the late nineties early
two thousands that he's doing this, that it's that far back, because he's
That's what he's talking about, is that he could sign w deal so nobody
else would sign him. It wasn't really want to use him right away.
It was so they could just have him there so that nobody else could get
him, which is simply amazing when you think about it like that. That's
how competitive, you know, the Monday Night wards were, um, but
uh. In between the contract siding and then his SmackDown debut against Kurt Angle,
he did a wrestle a few times for WWE Crowds. But like you
said, he took part in a reality show. Well, how much do
you know about Manhunt? I want to know how much I'm actually gonna be
thrown on you here? Um, I vaguely remember it all right, but
uh, but I never watched it, Okay, okay, good, all
right, I remember seeing commercials for it. Great. So, yeah,
he takes part in this reality show called Manhunt, which was produced by WWE
and Vince McMahon. Yeah that's kind of why I yeah, of course where
it. Yeah. So the basis of the show, um, for those
who don't, right, I'm sure contestants would. It was a game show
type competitive reality show. UH. Contestants would pretend to be fugitives, and
they hired quote actors to pretend to be bounty hunters to chase them around basically
an area like a basically a twenty six mile radius UH area in Hawaii,
and the hunters would attempt to shoot brother. What you say, Triple,
You're gonna shoot dude? What hey, brother? What's up with this man
hunt gimmick? Dude? Well, what do you do with man hunt?
Dude? Terry? You don't work for me? Right now? Pal?
But what do you mean, Terry? You work for Turner? Brother?
Yeah, that's why I got the fall brawl paint on. Brother. I'm
in the woods here, but you're hunting me, dude with a man brother,
good hunting. Um. So they would shoot the fugitives with paintball guns
and if you got hit three times, you're out. And the fugitive who
never gets caught they would win two hundred and fifty grand And almost immediately after
the show premiered, it came under heavy, heavy, heavy scrutiny. Yeah,
as there were shocking accusations that the outcome was being manipulated the ww he
was involved, and that came up and reality TV is fake, shocking do
you know? Do you know journalist Peter Lance, know Peter Lance? All
right, Well, he was on the fucking hunt. He was on the
fucking hunt to get to the bottom of it all. It seemed like he
was on. He was. He is the laps editor for reality TV.
That's what it seems like he is. Just his goal is to take down
reality TV. During those early days with the reality boom, and there were
apparently several complaints filed with the FCC, the first by one of the contestants.
His name is Jacqueline ken Jacqueline not Kennedy, honestly Jacqueline Kennedy, Jacqueline
Kelly, who would go by the nickname j K. All Right, so
for quotes that I'm going to read here. That's that's referring to. And
she made a claim that the show was rigged, and this was confirmed by
two of the producers, Bob Jaffee from Paramount and then Hash Salon. Does
that come with sausage corned beef? Hash Shalan? Yeah? And here's uh,
Jacqueline, what was it? Kennedy Jacqueline and Kennedy Rowling? Um?
So she he's he was a former. He was a judge on the show.
And the reason why he was the judge and a producer on the show
was because he was a former Navy seal. Wouldn't hey, I was a
Navy seal. How come you? Hey, Vince, why didn't you get
me on board? You know, I'm if you're producing the damn show,
I'm the governor of Minnesota. I could also your business. I know exactly
how to be a judge. I know how to how to look things square
in the eye and not cheat. All right, And I am I am,
you know, and I'm a former Navy seal. Jesse, Actually you're
a you were on the underwater demolition team with Acts and Smash. So um
it's Peter Lance guy all right. He did a oh man, god bless
God bless the Internet way back machine. That's all I have to say.
Oh, God bless and God am I lucky that they had his shit,
like you know, the the snapshots of because he had everything was up there.
His whole interview with with Schalan was up there. But um, this
was a sit down he actually had. He had fucking video clips. This
is two thousand and one Internet. He's got like a ton of video clips
on there. But here is here is lance with with Shalan answering the tough
questions about the show. Is there any doubt in your mind that the outcome
of Manhunt was influenced? Can network network executives and certain producers shaped and corrupted
the integrative of the game shape the outcome of the game. There's no doubt
in my mind. You're saying man that was fixed. Yes, I'm saying
man Hunt was fixed. The John Stossel of Reality television seriously, oh my
god, it's fixed. Didn't get his ear drums rupture. I know,
I know. So what what was noted in the in the the complaint with
the FCC was that so apparently Paramount executives and producers came to Hawaii and they
went to the shoot and they started making changes basically, so all right,
so, so so what there was was, you know, if you at
the end kind of like survivor any of those fucking you know, competitive competition
shows, you get to the point where you're kind of you're gonna vote somebody
off, but instead, in this one, you get voted into the gauntlet,
okay, And in the gauntlet is basically we're all three Bounty Hunt characters
are going to try to hit you with paintballs, you know. So it's
basically you're more than likely going to get get killed in that and be out
of the game. And so apparently these executives were like, you know,
it's not it's it's too hard for the people we want to win, Like
they picked people that they liked better, like, let's make it easier for
them. And one specifically, one specific incident involves Jacqueline Kelly JK. And
it was pretty severe. This is a quote from the written part of the
interview with Shelon again Peter Lance's reporting here. Quote. It was the conflict
of the game. The contestants were all running down a hill and the Hunters
were engaging them for the first time. During that conflict, several contestants fell.
Two of them received injuries, one pretty bad to his knee. This
was a guy named James, and he's a key to this whole thing here.
And when I saw jk on the ground. She was to my left,
directly yet my nine o'clock and I saw her and one of the producers
who seemed to be literally wrestling her to the ground and calling for assistance.
I didn't realize it at the time, but he was calling for a cameraman
to interview her. My impression at that point was that she was injured and
he was telling her to stay down, don't aggravate your injury. But when
I came to find out later what had happened, I realized right away that
that had affected the outcome of the game. He basically took her out of
the game while the clock was running, and it was during a very intense
and important moment for the contestants as a team. He basically put her on
the ground and did this interview and during the time that elapsed, her absence
created I think an issue with some of the other contestants. In fact,
they alluded to that during their vote, citing this is a reason they were
going to vote her off during the period of time when she was detained.
No one can say that j K wouldn't have been the hero of the day,
the hero of the team. No one can say that she wouldn't have
picked up James or carried him over the fence or helped out. In fact,
she did. When she finally resumed her position and the game was on,
she made offers to help. So basically what he's saying is that this
James guy who injured his leg, he was on the ground and he couldn't
move, and she was going to go over to him and help him and
and you know, and bring him over, which would have you know,
people would have You can vote people off for any reason. There's no there's
no one thing that you can do. But the fact that she was late,
and the fact that she didn't actually help people when they needed it,
in their eyes, they turned that on her as a you know, as
a thing to vote her into the into them the gauntlet. So she's voted
to the Gauntlet and again hit by the hunters. Then you're eliminated. And
she was hit by a hunter and the person who hit her proceeded to cut
off part of her hair as a trophy. And I'm going to send you
a picture of the hunter. It's John Cena. Yeah, it's on Sena.
John Cena was the guy who cut off this woman's hair and this So
what this really beyond kind of the stuff that we see on reality shows now
where you know, brother, you know it's all fake, dude, it's
all fake, brother, you know, it's just like you know, it's
for television. It's entertainment, dude. This this, especially in these early
days of this of this boom, it started reminding people of the quiz show
scandals of the fifties. You know, you know what I'm talking about.
Here's the key distinction is doc follow Reality shows like Hogan Knows Best aren't a
competition exactly. You're not presenting to the public winners and losers of a game,
right, And there is a distinction. Yeah, you're gonna go down
the quiz show route. And that makes a lot of sense. Yeah,
because the stuff got this on upn Public airwaves is not a cable right,
So this is a government owned airwaves FCC licensing all the and they can make
all the rules. That's why you can can't You can not say, sir,
words on network and you can on a cable and but yeah, yeah,
So the fact that this is being presented as something with winners and losers
and stakes put it in a different category exact reality show where you you know,
have I don't know someone in the real world house say something right,
And that was the main concern. And again here's here's hash Salon. In
that interview, he talks about why it's problematic. One of the defining questions
for the SEC is whether Manhunt falls under Section five or nine, which governs
quiz shows games of intellectual skill, knowledge or chance. Was Manhunt a game
of intellectual knowledge, skill, or chance? Yes, all of those things
to the nth degree. It really was. And I think a good example
of that a litmus paper test per se, would be dropping a college professor
in there and letting him deal with this. I think he would come out
and tell you that it required a great deal of intellect to figure out the
clues of the game, which weren't really shown on TV, to learn navigate
in the jungle on camera while you're being shot at, figuring out clues,
figuring out ways to go, figuring out decisions and making them in a rapid
moment. Yeah, highly intellectual, highly challenging. So that was a big
controversy. And right when this was happening, I guess it, it was
reported that a certain producer and his company were leaving the show. No,
he can't be involved with this, we're out of here. But it wasn't
because of this. He was already gone. They made everyone was reporting it
as if it was happening because of this, But Vince McMahon had already fled,
like they already had some kind of falling out with the show before it
even aired, So he was already gone before this shit happened. Another thing
that happened too was that they were they were So they shot on Hawaii,
right, and when the producers and the executives a paramount looked at the footage,
they're like, no, this sucks. So they reshot stuff, They
reshot moments in la and people and and that's what that's what actually triggered Peter
Lance, Who's like, that's not Hawaiian. That's fucking that's Griffith Park.
You know. He's like, that's not Hawaii. And that's what kind of
got the ball rolling. As they shot in areas that were very clearly not
Hawaii. And if this is a competition show like right, stuff already been
determined exactly, it's all, you know, and then yeah yeah, and
again if he's got all that stuff on on you know, but that's on
the photo of the what do you call it, the capturing of on the
way back machine. If you look up man Hunt and Peter Lance, it's
all there. It's really it is pretty fascinating. His his website's a complete
disaster. It's so fucking there's so much. It looks like a bad newspaper
format, right, it's just, oh god, it's so stressful. Figure
out what his angle is coming forward like this what he but he's trying to
fuck who you know what I mean he was, I mean he was a
I don't know if he still does this or not, but he was basically
a freelance investigative journalist, which no, no, I understand him. I'm
taught about the guy. He interviewed the guy to tell all gods, oh
oh oh, he's a fucking he's a Navy seal. Yeah, Navy seals
always they always end up you know, like in the Banahden stuff and everything
that there always ends up being two or three of them that just like they
step into the foreground and just hot. You know, they're supposed to be
like secretive, but they get the glint in their eye. They want the
camera, they want the spotlight, they want the recognition. Well, once
they can talk, you know, it's like you know, basically, you've
been you've had your your mouth zone shut for for whatever however many years,
fifteen years or whatever as a Navy seal, and now you can now I
can open up. Like I'm deeply curious now about the quiz show scandals.
I mean I know about them, and I know there was that movie about
it, but well, we're gonna like really sync in. What the harm
is you know, of working a great show to the public. It's not
like they have money in the game. There was Well you know we are
gonna you know, quiz show coming soon under the cinema. Is that right,
there's a connection there is. Yeah, it'll happen. Um Yeah,
I love that, love that movie. I love all that shit. Um
there was a thing and had to do with Um I forget what it was.
I do you know they do go into it in the movie and and
whatever. I can't remember the whole the whole thing about it. But it
had to do something about defrauding the public too. I think about something about
that. Yeah, I understand what. Yeah, but defrauded implies that like
someone paid for to see a legitimate show and got a you know, like
wrestling. Yeah, it didn't, but there's no payment just watching a TV
show. So I'll figure it out. Yeah, I forget, And I
was something because there's money changed. Well there's might be that. That might
be I don't know the quick show. But yeah, maybe they've fab the
No, he can't do that. They maybe they can't fabd the loser and
the loser. I had no idea that the fix was in. Yes,
yeah, like that, that's part of it. Like the John Turturto character
in the movie was this long time winner, but they wanted a pretty boy
to be the winner, someone more attractive, and so they fucked him over.
I think I forget if they told him he's gonna lose, or if
they told him over. That doesn't that's not fraud. But I think if
they gave him this impression that he could win a fair contest in the whole
time, they had no intention of letting him win. Yeah, taking the
money and giving somebody then that might have been it's been a while, I'm
rushing the movie. Yeah, I'll watch the movie in a while or what
I mean. That's as pro wrestling as a game. Seriously, seriously,
it absolutely is. Um So, Manhunt was canceled for six episodes. I
think there were more, but they're like nope, and I don't know.
It seems like I really couldn't find anything else about this investigation from with the
FEC. I don't know what happened, but the Chicago Suntimes wrote right in
the end of the summer of two thousand and one, Yeah, thousand and
one, with this aired, he said, um, they said quote.
With any luck, the FEC investigations will be thorough and definitive, and viewers
will be able to determine whether they need to start watch whether they need to
start watching reality TV with the same level of crust that they place in say
professional wrestling. M Thank you, Chicago. And then less than a year
later, John Cena would finally get his opportunity to perform in the WWE and
on WWE TV. This is from the June twenty seventh, two thousand and
two episode of WWE SmackDown. Come on, guys, there's gonna be somebody
back there that wants to seize them all. Oh yeah, yeah, listen,
don't be scared. I will take it easy on you. But there's
gotta be somebody back there that fifty years from now. Well, apparently Showy
Man accepted this challenge. You know what it is that I got this tantes
is this is John Cena. We heard a little bit about him. Yeah,
one of those many young talentses be working his way into the Jumpy company.
Eat just one of the many of talents from could be looking to knocked
on the door of opportunity. Kurt cous are looking crest, Who in the
hell are you? I'm Chaunce Cena, John Cina. Huh. Will you
tell me what is the one quality that you possess that makes you think?
Then you can walk out here and come into the ring and face the very
best in the business. Ruthless aggression, Holy angle down, get hampered away.
You've got the right half turning whip, the champion reversal, angle whipped
the canast the rag slow my seat up hook this looking gotta tumble. He's
got it this timeed angle angle just gotta si come out of here. He's
got it. Angle and get out the shoulder up. What a sena have
to du to keep Angle down? You gotta pin him. You pick up
that snap down double chicken with let its Curt flop over shoulders. They're panded
Curt angle John fa Man, you really took it, hey man, way
to go. I put it down. Man, You're gonna be a great
superstar matics. Man, I appreciate it. Here you going, man,
hell the debut? Here you go. Try to give him my own man
tres Oh what do you have? A nice data? It's the Undertaker.
Oh yeah, I remember that. What's your name kid, John Cena?
John Cena? Nice job. I'm understand he knew he did a nice job,
but he didn't know his name. He said his fucking name before the
match off obviously un'ert taker watch the match. Yeah, I just forgot it
because it doesn't matter and totally well. Yeah, and by the way,
uh as you might get to they almost cut him about a month after this.
We're getting there. Yeah, we get there. This fucking bullshit about
you know them having the eye for stars. I mean, most of these
guys that took off, they had at one point they run the brink of
cut. Yeah, exactly, exactly, dumb fucking luck to two or three
things that they couldn't predict happen, and then all of a sudden, it's
just like the movie with the Steve Auston the same thing. It's like,
you know, they architected this wonderful career for John Cena. Yeah they did,
but not ten that it was by design, is so I know.
I mean, he's a little more honest about that thing. Goodness, But
the way that they do it, they think, oh yeah, I want
always saw him totally. I always saw him, and I always saw him,
you know a lot in John Cena always did, always have, always
will set. They did do it with Hogan, that's about it. Yeah,
Um, you know I never so this is the first time I ever
watched that match. I was, you know, I can remember I was
in Italy. That was the summer I was in Italy. Uh when he
when John Cena came out, and I remember it was so funny because you
and I would always complain this was during that era. You know, they
don't they never put over new stars. You know, they're not building anybody
new. It's all the same old guys. It's funny we were saying that
in two thousand and two, yeah, you know, like a year and
a half after w W closed down, and we're talking about they called back
to give like six of the biggest paydays at wrestling, right every year.
And so I remember reading too that I remember reading about the debut. I
don't remember who I was reading, but I was reading. I've read somebody's
website in Italy about about this SmackDown. That was how I was getting my
wrestling news at that time. I was just reading people's reviews every week.
Um. And they said that they were disappointed because here they are finally building
up someone new in a strong way, or trying to. And they complained
that they couldn't hear their name, which I heard it just fine. I
mean maybe they read dubbed it over, I don't know, but I heard
his name just fine. But they complained I never forget that this guy's name
is John Cena, but I didn't. I didn't know that they didn't,
you know. And then they complained that he didn't win, and it seemed
like from the description that he didn't really do well, and like, how
are you know how were supposed to care about a guy who loses, but
I'm like, they actually he has control of almost the entire match. Yeah
yeah, I mean they put him over huge. He can't win, he
can't beat Kurt Angle and one felt Swoop, but they made him look like
a fucking million bucks. I mean he gets gas like five seconds in.
I mean you watch him and he's just like Sena, He's like, oh,
I mean he couldn't. He couldn't. He couldn't Inhale win if he
could fucking tried. He was so out of breath, you know, like
it was big thing for him, but sure it was really just to gimmick
that Angle was doing through people right, right, and I remember that,
but it was, but it's still like it really worked to build him up.
But like you said, it didn't go so well. But before we
get there, I do want to return to that Boston Globe article from August
twenty nine, two thousand and two, Wardo's entertainment will tell you John Cena
is fueled by ruthless aggression, and that certainly seems true when he's on television.
In June, when he debuted on SmackDown, one of the WB's highest
rated shows like one of their only shows. Well, I guess they had
the two Saturday night shows. It's like, well they have Raw and SmackDown,
so uh, you know they're both going to be you know whatever.
Um Senior fought wrestling personality and former Olympian Kurt Angle throwing him wrestling personality.
Okay, I like that. The w B personalities, Okay, you could
to say he wrestled Kurt Angle about we have I wanted to just talk about
the w personalities that we have here. We don't have wrestlers, we don't
even have supersharks. We have personalities, individualistic personalities. I present to you
the w W individualistic personalities. Serial riveting and throwing around the ring until Angle
took control of the bout in the last minute, both seen to be fueled
by aggression, probably the ruthless kind. Scena scowled, huffing and puffing,
and anger as he was taken down after a close fight. None of that
quote ruthless aggression can be seen in North Andover where West the pre native scene
A trains on his days off from touring with the ww Actually that's where his
ruthless aggression should be is in the gym. Absolutely, it's fake. Exactly
it was. It was the WWF before the World Wildlife Fund got the rights
to the name. At the Chaotic Wrestling Center on Belmont Street in North Andover,
the CWC in North Andover, a place where young wrestlers take classes and
train like the Like the John Sena's of the world, Sina himself is relaxed.
No smackdowns to be had or given. Quote. I love this,
he said of his break into the major leagues of the WWE. I'm just
so happy to be doing it. Then, the past few months, Sina
has become a WWE quote superstar unquote, one of the wrestlers like The Rock,
the Undertaker and Hollywood Hulk Hogan, the oversized men who vary dramatically and
not so spontaneously give each other beat down saw the shows such as SmackDown and
Raw. Sina dramatically and not so spontaneously. That's it wrestling, that's a
shirt wrestling now and Dadada dramatic and not so spontaneous. Done. Grew up
in West Newbury. His mother, Carol Sina, still lives in town.
She runs an ice cream stand, Jac's, and serves on the Board of
Health really, you run an ice cream stand and you are on the board
of health. Seriously, the fo's wrong with that? Was on the board
of health. He was just bored with health. Filaston though, was not
He was on the board of death. Oh. She says her son's passion
for wrestling started early. He would fight with his four brothers and pretend to
be Hulk Hogan. She never had much interest in the sport before her son
made it big. Given the choice of watching wrestling or sortain socks, I
was probably shortain socks. You go, Carol. I had no idea he'd
eventually be doing it for real. Oh, he's not doing it for fake.
Really nothing to worry about there, Carol exactly seem to trained at Ohio
Valley Wrestling in Indiana school that'sizes and producing professional wrestling stars. He went on
to fight with the Ultimate Pro Wrestling League. That's backwards. He's an open
pro wrestling first, and then Ohio Valley. His stage name was Prototype as
say Ohio Valley was in Indiana? Yes? Was it? Yes? Is
the Ohio Valley in Indiana? Always thought it was in Ohio? Ucky?
Is it Kentucky? I always thought it was Ohio. You know because it's
the Ohio Valley Wrestling. But yeah, it's okay. Well, no,
oh, this guy did his research. I hope us. I don't.
I hope it to God. It's not your your article, it's not who
is it by? Uh you know I didn't. I didn't check. It's
in there if you'll get the clippings though, it's in there, and I'll
spare him the mention. All right, all right, um uh. The
stage name was a prototype, as in the prototype of what a wrestler should
be. When I'm seen it ease into the WWE and began fighting for larger
aud audiences, he dropped the pseudonym and went back to John Cena. It's
not a menacing name, he said, so it might take him a bit
longer to make his identity familiar with audiences. I'm just John Cena, he
said. You know, there's no real hook. If I were something like
the Wolfman would probably be easier. But I'm just young, upstart John Cena.
The personality will come eventually. He already seems to have pulled in an
audience without costumes and catchphrases during his last televised match on Velocity, but WWE
Saturday night show, Several women held up John Cena signs. One said quote,
John Cena is a hottie. Sena admits he wasn't exactly fueled by ruthless
aggression when he challenged Kurt Angle in June to a fight what became his mainstream
wrestling debut. Not so surprisingly, he says, the results of the matches
are fixed there we go, but w told him that he'd be wrestling Angle
for an on screen bout just a few hours before the fight. Quote,
They'll say you have eight minutes and Kurt Angle has to win, he said.
The outcome be planned, but the fighting is real. Sina said wrestlers
may look unharmed, but that's not always the case. They just don't put
you on TV. They just don't put people who are hurt on TV,
he said. Sina now spends most weeks on the road, and he gets
home just a few days a month. He goes from city to city,
taping the episodes for SmackDown or performing in dark matches. What they do be
calls the fights that are performed for audiences but not aired on television At home,
his fan base cheers him on, hoping he is given, hoping he's
the giver and not the receiver of smackdowns. One thing I'm happy about is
that to me, he still seems off sorry, And one thing I'm very
happy about is to me he still seems very down to earth. Carol Sina
said of her son, he still communicates well with people. I don't think
any of this has gone to his head, whatever she thinks of him.
Now, I know right what the fuck happened to you? Why you robot?
Huh see, I'm just looking to get some ice cream. Mom ah
none, none, I don't want you in my house. Jac's oh Man
Wrestling podcast with Jack n JP Sorrows Wrestling Podcast. Well, like you said,
didn't really go well for Sena after a summer debut um. Another clip
here from the Whiskey Ginger Show. He shares kind of an abbreviated version from
getting his contract up to him almost getting fired. So here we go.
No aspirations are doing anything, but it happened to me in the height of
the market and competition, and they were signing people defensively. I got a
really low money tracked to just sit at home and not go to the other
guys, and then finally ended up just hanging around to get an opportunity.
Debuted on TV in Chicago two thousand and two. Yep, um at the
United Center. Where was it? We always we always want Rosemo Roseman,
Horizon Baby one of one of my favorite buildings. So great, my favorite
favorite. That's great. That place gets very very loud. Yeah, a
lot of uh, there's a lot of tradition that building for me time.
Yeah. So debuted in Chicago. Debut in Chicago and totally ship the bed
Like how what do you mean? Well, did all the stuff right?
Yeah? But had no had nothing, had nothing here. You know,
I was just trying to people didn't know who I was. They couldn't connect
to John Cena coming out in different tights and boots every time, and you
know I'm here like I had no. Things were good, but no one
could attach to who I am. Right, And when we were as entertainers,
you gotta kind of want to attach. Like when we film a movie,
you try to work on your character so people will relate to them,
attached to them or detached to them, or root for them or root against
him. It's what we're doing. I am willing to bet that it's a
similar perspective and trajectory and stand up the same thing you want people to like
and identify with your style, or be adversarial to it and call you out
to drum up a little bit more, you know, awareness. And so
I was about to get fired because I wasn't doing well and I was on
my final overseas tour in the UK. It was a right before Halloween,
and they were like, oh, you don't. I don't think you're gonna
make it to Christmas, so whatever, but we'll bring on this last tour
or give you some more money. That WW was extremely good about that.
I'm like, hey, we're probably not going to do business, so let's
get you on as many shows as we can. But that's so cool they
tell you, they give you a heads up. There's other pro sports where
a lot of times it's like you wake up to a phone call that's like
you're cut. I just knew I was. The writing was on the wall,
and like it wasn't. How do you know that? I genuinely,
because when you go out there, you use your ears, and the sound
is not just silence, not just apathetic silence, but shoes going up to
the concourse to get hot dogs. You hear a guy in the bathroom.
Yeah, you know, it's kind of like so by mistake. Um,
you know, I kept to myself. I didn't want to rock the boat,
but like, Okay, my time's coming to an end, so I'll
enjoy this. On the tour bus overseas, they travel us all together and
some of the guys are freestyle on the back. So I just went in
the back and waited for my turn and joined in and just did the best
I could and rip and just tried to unleash the fury. And the front
of the bus was Stephanie McMahon and she was head of the writing man's daughter
ye head of the writing team at the time, and she was like,
how did you remember all that? And I kind of explained to hear the
concept of freestyle and she's like, well, make something up about me right
now. Sure enough, on the spot, i'd you know, spit a
few bars and she's like, do you want to do that on TV?
Yes? Please? Yeah, And it just so happened to be the Halloween
episode of SmackDown, so the character shift wasn't like why is he doing that?
It started as a costume and then just kind of went into that,
Um, what did he what did he do for? Do we do we
know the rap that he did for there? He was related to a tuna
can. She was eating a can of tuna and she said, wrap something
about this tuna, and he made something up that's funny, and then he
dressed up his vanilla eyes for the snackdown Halloween partner. We're going to play
that right now, and that's so fucking McMahon. Yeah, tell me this,
tell me this can of shit right now, do it. I always,
I always wondered about that story because it was like at a time when
people were really Stephanie had just become head of writing, head of creative writing,
and it was kind of like, yeah, there's a lot of doubt
and cynicism about whether she was appropriate for the role if she's being propped up,
and this was sort of like, I don't know, I felt like
there was a high risk that this was kind of like a reverse engineered story
because no one heard this story until he shifted characters and was clearly on his
way to the top. And I heard it. I mean when I did
the article on him, I emailed them and I said, you know,
how did the rap him? It come about, and they sent me back
like I didn't interview Stephanie, but they sent me back a quote from her
describing because I think I saw to talk to somebody that could recall the gimmick
shift and that's and they sort of gave me like the like a quote like
company thing, yeah, like this is what you need, like this is
the only the only version of history we're willing to let you access. But
she's really busy too, and I'm not even sure I asked for her directly,
but whatever it was, I remember that distinctly, that that quote,
and I'll try to find that as you're playing. This was delivered to me
as sort of like etched in a stone tablet. That's amazing. Yeah,
here's This is the two of the moments on Matt SmackDown, that Halloween SmackDown
episode where he's at Christophers Vanilla Ice collabor right hand. Listen. Ice is
back with a new proposition. Your position is that of a failure. I'm
a nailure to Jamie Noble's trailer, and then a dare you to run around
and cause a scare, give people to shakes to make the change of underwear.
Tom on Tom, This is my ball that you're under there. You
want to bear have ball? Those shape back here fast. I gotta go
as it been a blast him out of blocking room, stole raym the STEREO's
mask, tried to get taker's pass, put up his blasted all to tight
piece. I gotta go about the hot white's body. The old man's gonna
plan. He's chilling in the building that I tell you, I'm like light
beer. I taste great in the mask fielding. What are you trying to
tell me? Okay, your dad's in your office and he wants to see
you. My dad, your dad, Vince McMahon is in your office and
he wants to see you. Sure it was here. He's in your office
and he wants to see you and trying to be Eric Bischoff insk Oh that's
when he makes out with Stephanie Ye right right, rape night. Yeah,
big stuff going on there. Um yeah, you know he's got he's very
very eminem there, he's very very first eminem album out a hand or nan
on a hand and air on a nan is it? What is it?
Um? Wraps up and uh, well what song is he he's there's a
particular eminem song from that first album that you can tell he's uh trying to
trying to riff on there. All right, let's see you probably, I
mean that would that's a that's that's when he came out. That's when the
movie came out too. I think a mile a mile. I think it
was two thousand and two. I can see that, Okay. So I
talked to vice president marketing for w to b uh, let's see business wearing.
Because the thing I did was all about how like, finally they're doing
like a rap character that isn't like men on a mission, which I like
to be laughed at really or like to. I talked to Carol too.
Wow, hey, Carol, I forgot. I talked to Carol Carol.
Wow, yeah, look at that, yep. And I would talked to
I talked to Umu. What did he call him? Uh? My god,
what's what's a John? Seen his dad's first name? Oh my god,
what's his fucking name? And not John? I thought he was John
seeing seen his dad seeing his dad seeing his dad? Anyway, he told
me like to give him a call and call him his gimmick name. I
remember that. He said, Wow, all um ah, it's gonna drive
me nuts. John Seena Dad seen a senior. You're right, that's right,
But that's not what I'm thinking. I'm trying to think of his um,
his wrestling gimmickname. It wasn't Hollywood, but it was something like that.
It was something like because he was a manager, you know, he
would run around the indies and stuff. He was an announcer too, right,
yeah, yeah, I think he was kind of like, Okay,
here it is backstage at a backstage event in Birmingham, England, so that's
different. This is he. So the story I got was that it was
at an event, not on the bus. Scenas shown an improbed too wrapped
off with fellow wrestlers, catching the tension of Stephanie man levek w executive,
who was the daughter of and sook Man mcman levick put scene on the spot
in the flight back from England, challenging him to rap off the top of
his head at three am after a long night of wrestling, Scenia proceeded to
rap for two minutes, all about some tuna I was eating, she said.
Needless to say, he made a big impression on me then and has
ever since. There you go, There we go seven l and s A.
Terek. I talked to them too. This like is some long time
Boston rap gurus, like you know, very very associated death the Boston specific
hip hop scene, and they were a big help to him getting credit early.
And I think they even hooked him up with the studio Space to record
as his rap album. Yeah, it was a good ding crazy, it
was awesome. I hung with him at the at the gym he worked out
in Haveril he did huh. Yeah. I did a long interview with him,
and it have been nicer. This is right around This came out March
sixteenth oh four, so was right before Usmania. Wow, how come I
name fucking number one? How can I know about this number two? Why
didn't I go with you? Uh? I don't know where the fun was
working? It was. It was my was my job. So it wasn't
really like a yeah, but I could have been your coffee guy. Yeah,
where the fuck was? I wasn't anywhere unless I was in New York
with my with my girlfriend. Yeah I was. Yeah, I wasn't.
Um, Yeah, you probably were, because that's where we stayed for Mania
twenty. Yeah, I don't remember you being around. It's sort of like
I don't even remember you. I don't even remember hearing about this. It's
the weird thing that's very strange. I would I wouldn't tell you. Yeah
exactly, yea, yeah, I look back finally on it now as I
read it again. That's actually I quoted I quote a RAPPI did about Chris
Benoa. Don't you ever tell me who I can and can't respect. You'll
wind up in surgery with another broken neck. At least you're all set when
you get your release, if you ever go what about it? Choking his
kid out and so well, that's a that's kind of what's weird is if
you ever get your release, if only right? Yeah right, Wow,
that's great. I love that. Um yeah. Then the long story short,
he got over and in so, as I was researching this, I
learned how seen it came up with the you can't see me hand signal.
This is from the Graham Norton Show. And this turns into just I mentioned
next to Matthew McConaughey, and it turns into just a wacky fucking situation with
Matthew McConaughey. It's really fucking hilarious. I was actually making the music for
my own theme song that you just so heard and finally serenaded me to thank
you very much, and we played it for my brother and the first time
he heard it. This was the the fifty Cents Crew had a really popular
song called in the Club and he heard it the first time and instead of
dancing like he was our littenist test to see what songs were good, what
songs were bad, he did this and I'm like, dude, what are
you doing. It's like, no, everybody does this, man, everybody
does this. And I guess this was from fifty cents video and he's like,
you won't do it on TV, So what the hell do I gotta
lose? I'm gonna fire me. Of course I'll do it on TV.
But instead of doing this, I did this. And now for fifteen years,
because of a dare, I've been doing this and I'll do you one
better. People actually think I'm invisible. There will be people to look at
this couch and be like, why is there nobody next to McConaughey. John
Cina would be there, but we can't see him. So you never know.
You remember hacks All, Jim Douglas, King, kongu Erics, he
carried the claw I got kicked out of her talking Texas wrestling. I get
Ki gotta Hurst call see him in Treeport for pelting scanderbar or the bag of
tomatoes was a man dressed as a cheek that used to throw fire. Yes,
we managed King Kong Monday, who was like four hundred and eighty four
pounds. And remember that the missing smarts unknown and over the green face spit
green mist. They sound really good, good stuff entertaining. There's so much
and I'm John excellent. You played that for Acanda Heath, haven't you before?
I don't know. I don't think so, hey we did. I
don't remember playing anything McConaughey ever, know I recognize that so fucking funny.
Oh yeah, remember that he's talking about not Texas, remember in South Texas
connection. Um tremendous, just tremendous. And scene is so great in those
fucking contexts you know where it's like, yeah, people that are vaguely familiar
with wrestling but want an excuse to laugh at it, and he knows exactly
how to like make it us at lighthearted. Yeah, it's like he's disrespecting
wrestling, but he's giving people life he's right on that fence of disrespecting wrestling.
Right if he was on the talk show, he could never come off
in a way that the audience would feel comfortable laughing with him about wrestling,
because he wouldn't laugh about wrestling because he's not comfortable because he's taking it so
seriously, and he's not comfortable with an audience either of stranger. That's a
whole other matter, Dude. Why are there people here? Brother? Oh,
I don't know, Terry. It's a talk show, and what kind
of helps It's what what do you mean? Talk show? Dude? I
was under the impression, brother, I signed a contract. Dude, it
was an interview with you and me. Brother, Can we walk and talk?
Brother? Because I get a lot of things high now Henry Holmes is
one. I gotta go to New York, Brother, I got in New
York day. So come two thousand and four, seen it beats the big
show Russillmania twenty for the US title, holds onto it. He gives it
for several months and then drops it to Carlito. Why so he'd go film
the marine. So we'll come back to John seen a little bit um,
So we're gonna move on to Robert Patrick, the villain in the Marine.
You know Robert Patrick, Yeah, yes, okay good. Robert Patrick born
November fifth, nineteen fifty eight and married at a Georgia. He moved around
a lot as a kid. He lived in Dayton, Ohio, Detroit,
Michigan Bay Village, Ohio, and Boston, Massachusetts. Alright, looks from
Boston, he does, He really does. His dad was in New England
or his mother was from Georgia. They met. I think his dad went
to MIT and so he was an engineer and his mom and his dad worked
at the same place down in Georgia. They met and three weeks later they
were married. And she was twenty when she had Robert Patrick, and he
did. Patrick does an incredible if it's an incredible interview on the Inside Out
with Paul Mecurio. Do you know this podcast? I don't. It's great.
He talks about moving to Boston, being a Pats fan while there,
and the unique perspective this is something that's lost now, you know that.
I don't think I really appreciate it either. The perspective of not having internet
access to maintain sports team allegiances when you move around a lot, listen to
this. We moved up there from Atlanta, Georgia. It was nineteen sixty
seven, sixty eight, somewhere around there. I was about ten years old.
Jimmy longboard car, your scrumskin. Yeah, there you go. But
they were not the New England Patriots. They were the Boston Patriots, and
they were a great thing. Yeah great, Yeah, But you know this
back in the day, Paul, where you didn't have direct TV and you
couldn't You didn't know if you'd ever go back to Atlanta again. So why
why did you, you know, stay rooting for the home home team,
right right? So did you guys travel so much? Because for you,
oh absolutely, it's it's a it's a really good point. I didn't think
of that. It's a whole different you know. I can when I'm in
out yea, if I'm in LA, I mean, I like, I
like to listen to Boston Sports Radio. So if I'm in LA and out
there for doing a project or whatever, I live. I'm based in New
York right now, but I'll just I'll just pull up the w EI sports
app on my phone and I'm listening to in real time Boston sports Talk.
So yeah, It's a really good point. It's a different time. It's
a totally different time back then. It's a totally different time. And you
know, I had my certain players that I loved and everything, but it
was hard to stay in touch with them, and it was hard to follow
what was going on in baseball, and you know, so I would move.
We moved to Detroit and I became a Tigers fan. It was like
I wanted to be a part of the hometown team. It's a fascinating thing,
you know when you think about it, like becoming fans because you're in
the area and because you can't you know, you don't have access right other
that's totally a foreign thing now. Yeah, yeah, you can really see
every game if you were to right and if you're and you can, you
can you can follow, you can follow your sports team. You don't have
to. You know, you don't lose coverage of it because you're on the
West coast. Like I could watch I could, Like if I couldn't watch
a Patriots game, I could at least read about it. Yeah, I'm
sure that uh Austin in particular over indexes in terms of the amount of fans
they have, like that I don't know, someone who grew up a Rockies
fan and moves to New York probably doesn't give a fuck about the Rockies five
years, you know, even today for sure. But there's a Boston thing
where, you know, you can go to Boston Red Sox game in any
baseball stadium in this country and you can find a tr vibe, right,
yeah, yeah, yeah, I mean that's definitely right. You know,
we're to the point where there are Boston themed bars in LA for God's sake,
right exactly. Yeah, drove by some while I was there. I
Tampa Bay Rays games, where it feels like there's just as many Red Sox
fans there is, yeah as Tampa, because you know, there's so many
retire reason stuff that makes sense and just not that much of a trek.
And Boston. The Red Sox have spring training in Fort Myers, Florida,
so there's there's plenty of Boston Florida connection. But yeah, that's a thing.
And Yankees too for that matter. But but um, yeah, by
the way, sorry, this is not the one. There are two podcasts
that I'm I'm using here as reference points, and they both have inside as
the beginning of their thing. This one's still a good interview, but the
one you're the one that's coming up is really the one that is just phenomenal.
I was gonna say that guy's like the past two podcasts, they've had
hosts who are into like yeah, wow, you could like yeah, someone
like says something they cut them off with like wow, yeah that's not no,
that wasn't good. Um uh so. But one thing I thought was
need from this one is that he would end up He credit the moving around
so much as a big help, which makes sense totally for an actor.
He met a lot of different people, you know, he kept meeting different
people from different areas of the country and so it helps you, you know,
with your experiences and your relatability and how you know and things to draw
from. And but he didn't actually want to be an actor when he grew
him. He um. He did have an acting experience in school in grade
school, but it didn't he liked it. It didn't necessarily create that spark
though, like this is what I gotta do. Uh. This is from
the Inside of You podcast, not the Inside Out podcast, the Inside of
You podcast. This is again great, great interview. My first acting experience,
it was my mother who kind of got me doing like some print ads
in Georgia for like Rich's department store. But I was chosen to be Peter
Pan and play in third grade, and I was kind of embarrassed about that
and the guys, and then there was the question of you got to wear
the tights, and oh, what the fuck? I don't think so it'll
be green corduroys for me. And uh, you know, at third grade,
I think that we know what year was a sixty seven or something like
that I did. I did Peter Pan. And you know what, I
loved it. Really, I mean, as far as I can think back
to my mind what I was thinking at however, old I was just an
excitement. I loved it. I jumped out on stage. I'm Peter Pan
from Never Never Less. You played Peter Pan. It was Peter It was
just a school play. But I think it was enough Michael that it it
kind of made me go acting right. And you remember when I grew up,
Well you don't remember, but I mean I grew up in a time
when you didn't have this. You didn't have games either, you didn't have
any of that. Ship. Yeah, you had a baseball, you had
a football. You had a gun. You had a gun, yeah,
okay, you had you had the woods, right, Oh, yeah,
you had a dog, You had some friends, you had a bike,
and you went out and created your fun. That's true. And you acted,
we acted like we were in Vietnam. That that was my childhood.
I don't know if I can in Vietnam. But all right, did you
I mean all right, did you also have like the did you also act
like with the PTSD when you came back from the war too? Is that?
Yeah? Something I can tell you about that. I could tell you
about PTSD any day of the week, twice on Sunday. Do it over
some nchiladas and Jimmy chunges. I'm um so okay. So he kind of
yes, he did get the spark, as he said, but kind of
made me sound like an idiot there, But he didn't get the like I'm
going to do this like he you know, it was there, but he
didn't really figured out after college because he ended up he was an athlete,
student athlete. I played football, did track and field at Bowling Green State
University. And again from the Inside Out podcast, he uh, this is
this is how he really got the professional bug. I failed. There's no
other way to put it. I failed that some things that I thought I
was going to succeed at and was disappointed. And out of that disappointment,
it's sort of I sort of found my way into acting. That's the best
way to word it. I think I was an athlete. I went to
college to play football, and I ended up realizing I didn't want to play
anymore. And then then then it made me question why am I at college?
And then I didn't want to be what my dad was, not because
I didn't like my dad, but because I just didn't want to do it.
And I really sort of found my way to acting. Um, and
I you know, uh, I'm so much more suited for it. It's
you know, acting, there's another but being a kid and not growing up
you know how to write it really is, and and working in a cubicle
at a bank didn't seem like something I wanted to do. No offense,
no disrespect to anybody that does it. But I just who knew that it
would grow into a thing where, you know, you really start studying the
human condition and presenting yourself in these characters, you know what I mean?
It evolves into Oh, I can make a living at this and it's actually
really healthy. It's a it's a catharsist, you know, to to a
certain degree, playing out evil people. What's it like to be super good?
There's there's all sorts of techniques and artistic parts of being an actor.
Are you super comedic? Are you wonderful? Funny? What are you more?
Dark? Drug? Dramatic? You know what I mean? Yeah,
Yeah, there's so many nuances and levels to it that it's just it's constantly
asking you questions. That's got a very unique outlook on it all. I
really I like him, like this guy I wasn't, you know. I
always love. One thing I really enjoy about doing this show is there are
so many times when they are actors that I'm kind of like, yeah,
they're fine, I'm fine with them, And then hearing them, listening to
them, reading about them, it's like outside of acting, right outside of
acting, or just kind of learning more about them than I actually did,
because it's I've never fucking I've never looked up Robert Patrick before. I mean,
I know who he is, and I always I like him. I
think he's a good actor and all that I think he does some some fun
stuff, but I didn't really give a shit about him in a way that
like I never like I would say about I don't know, like looking up
fucking Spielberg or something like that, you know, like he doesn't have that
of an impact onmmy. But I'm just always amazed at just at not only
the about their story, but also just when they're when they're this down to
earth like he is, who just doesn't you know, He's like there's nothing
to hide. He's just the way that he is, you know, and
he just accepts it. And it's awesome. It's so fucking great. Um,
his dad, his dad's dead, but his mom, his mom is
still alive, at least she was a year ago anyway. Um he he.
He's very close with her, um, and he actually credits her in
a non direct way, being you know, sort of an inspiration, I
guess, an unconscious inspiration to become an actor. As you're gonna hear here,
he it was like she wanted this, she wanted something more, but
she never get to achieve it because she got married so young, she had
her kids starting so young, and so it just kind of like, you
know, you're gonna hear him again. This is from the other the inside
of You podcast, which I guess could have been our our show too.
Inside of that ass podcast, the inside of that ass um Yeah, here
he is again. Is your mom still with you? She is? She's
she's eighty three, she's exactly twenty years older than me. Wow. Is
you guys still close? Very much? You talked to her? How often
every freaking day? Really about that's a treasure, about anything? Anything?
How are you, what's going on? What are you doing? She's interested
in your life, always has been, always been supportive, always supportive.
I think part of the reason why I became an actor was for her.
Really, I think she wanted to be an actress. She was pretty enough,
and she fancied herself as a like a model. You know, I
got to see a picture now, well i'll show you. Do I have
a phone? Did I bring my phone? I don't know. I don't
know. In your car, nomiping your fancy car that you drive, Come
on, that was just a fancy loud cars. Like what the hell's outside?
That's just an engine roaring out there. That's just a Dodge Hell god
seven horse bo. You gotta dip it down into your Detroit Voice. A
Dodge what is it? Dodge hellcad the old Dodge Hellcas seven hundred and seven
horse but seven hundred and seven A pure muscle, Detroit muscle. She's a
beauty. Look at her, Ryan, look at the picture of his mom's
nineteen. She was, Ye, she's a beauty. Right, let me
see that picture. I could part. It's like she's sixteen or seventeen.
There, what a smile. She's just a sweetheart. I think that's like
in high school. I don't know how old she is there, but I
saw that went like, yeah, God bless her. I mean, you
know, I mean, you think about your parents, and you think about
how they grew up, when they grow up, when there you're growing up.
It's a simultaneous thing. Yeah, loves his mom, inspired by her.
So it moves out to La in eighty four and uh, I'll tell
you you know, one of my one of my absolute favorite connections on Under
the Cinemat. It's one of those weird things like it always to me there
are two places that more times than not we're gonna end up okay, that
they're gonna have someone we're talking about is going to pass through here. Number
one the actor's studio. So many, so many people that we've talked about
on Under the Cinemat have made their way through the actor's studio. Oh yeah,
the second one, Roger Corman. How many fucking people. How many
fucking people have we talked about who have gone through the you know, the
Roger Corman crash, course of wrestling, of of of moviemaking. And that's
it. He get his first acting gigs with in Roger Corman movies and built
a name for himself and got a lot of street cred um in the in
in on the acting side of the business, did the Robert Patrick and his
first major film, like his first big big film was die Hard Too coming
soon Under the Cinemat. Not a huge role, but he gets a good
one liner. He goes, I forget what the whole thing is, but
his his line is a sitting duck, and then he starts shooting things and
he says that the money you get paid for that. He ended up giving
his girlfriend an engagement ring um and they've been married ever since. Actually he's
that's that's he's a he's one of the few man who had the one the
one spouse. And then after that he got the role. He got the
role, his role of a lifetime, the role that made him to one
thousand opposite Arnold Schwarzenegger in Terminator two, coming soon to under the cinemat Um.
And it was funny. There was a there was an article about about
him. I forget what movie he was he was promoting, but it was
in the Herald's Sun, and uh, you know, he talks about Arnold
Sparseneger and every time they see each other, it's always a good time.
And uh, you know, he says that he saw him at a Springsteen
concert and he goes, I know, I'm so proud of you. Robert
Patrick's so proud of you. And he he was really excited for him to
to run for governor at the time, but he couldn't vote for him because
he's a hardcoret Democrat and so he couldn't, you know, he couldn't he
couldn't actually vote for him, which I think was hilarious. And then after
T two though, and you know, I kind of I kind of knew
this. I don't know if you would have noticed this or not, but
I noticed this. After T two, he kind of goes through a rough
patch there are a few things here and there, but a lot of times
if you look at his at his at his movies, there there aren't a
lot of notable gigs. And you know why now I don't drugs and alcohol,
thank you, ha ha. I really know he's from Boston. Drugs
and alcohol, motherfucker. That's it. And again from the Inside of You
podcast, here's the story. I feel like I lost a lot of momentum
T at T after T two for a number of reasons. And I'm going
to talk about this because I feel very comfortable to talking to us. I'm
an alcoholic. I'm not turning this into an age a lot, but I
am an alcoholic and I had I was a big substance abuser, an alcoholic
prior to T two, and I got myself clean and sober for T two
because I knew that I could not do that film with the recreational activities that
I had going on, nor was I going to be able to drink I
was. I had to go and be a monk. I had to focus,
I had to do the film. And when it's over, of course
I go back and hit it hard in a big way because now I've accomplished
something, and you think, if I may interject that, you think that
after doing that and getting off the booze and having such success that you think,
oh, well, look at would happened when I got off the booze.
But that wasn't the mindset an addiction, and not for this guy.
No, I wasn't mature enough to handle it, even though I was thirty
years old. You know, I was thirty when that thirty one, when
that came out, and I rewarded myself by partying for like two years,
you know, like three years, like four years until I finally realized what
am I doing. I've destroyed this great gift of momentum I've gotten. I've
you really destroyed it. You can tell you destroyed it. Oh, I
feel so. I feel like I did, like with what I don't think
I would. I don't think I prepared myself for some of the opportunities I
was presented, and therefore I didn't get the jobs. When's the last time
you had a drink? Twenty six years ago? You want to know how
I quit? Michael, I'm gonna give credit here. I hope I can
do that. Please. I would like to lift people up instead of bringing
them down. And I'm gonna say I was working with Demi Moore and I
was doing strip tease. Oh yeah, and I played her drunken redneck husband.
Probably the most true to casting I feel. I remember that too.
I was at Piecing you. Yeah and uh yeah. I liked him and
and and they may like me. We got along really really well. And
um she said to me at one point, she said, you know,
I feel like you have a real anger issue on the set one day and
I said really, She said yeah, And then she and I thought about
that, What the fuck does that mean? Like I'm not angry at her
or anything, but what is that? You know? I was drinking about
two to three bottles of wine at night on that movie. That's a lot.
That's a lot of wine. It's a lot. And I wouldn't even
leave my hotel, was in there by myself. Anyway. Was it affecting
your work? I don't think so, because I think part in that movie
you were. It helped me in that movie. She couldn't forget what she
was saying. Yeah, I mean I I it was one of those things
and I thought, well, I mean it was it was constructive. I
feel like your deal was. You know, I don't know what made that
happen, but she had a psychic that came on the set and uh,
a gal that does a reading and she, you know, uh, me
and the gal went to my chair and we did this reading and this guy
said, I see alcohol around you. It was like the first thing she
said. And I listened to that, and I thought about it, and
she was telling me about my my, my grandparents, my ancestors and all
that kind of stuff. I started to going, I think I have a
fucking problem. And that was pretty much my bottom that And when I told
my wife I wanted to have kids, and she said, are you out
of your fucking you want to have kids? Do you think I'm gonna have
kids with you? Why don't you try to get off the recreational drugs for
a year or two so I don't have any any problems having a kid.
Yeah, we'll take it from there. Awesome, Yeah, yeah, he
really does. He fucking he's fucking awesome. And so yeah, because according
to that, I guess this is from two thousands, from twenty twenty two,
that interview, So he got sober nineteen eighty six and he said,
too, this is great He said that every time he sees T two,
he sees someone younger and skinnier than he is now. But it's because he
was broken on drugs. That's why I'm skinnier. Um. And I said,
if you look at his resume too, I was. I was looking
at his IMDb, and there are a couple of things in there, like,
you know, he definitely had. He definitely worked. It wasn't like
he was not working. But there aren't major movies in there, you know.
The the what I thought was funny is that he the two movies that
he did that were notable were Wayne's World and Last Action Hero. And do
you know what he did in those movies? He did cameos as the T
one thousand, So not even like playing a new character. It was just
T one thousand ripper, you know jokes sou yeah. So it really his
his life changed, as you hear a lot, you know when he when
he when he got sober um and you know, how would you celebrate your
tenth year of sobriety? For me, if I would, if if if
I if I needed to do that, I would. I want to release
a motion picture where I started opposition John Cena we were starting. That's what
I would want to say. I would want to say, hey, you
know what for for to tell her my ten years of sobriety, here's the
marine and um. What I like about this too is that that interview with
the inside of your podcast, it was propped to promote the Peacemaker. He's
in the Peacemaker. He's reunited with Johnston. He plays his father in that
in that show, and so he's thrilled out the He he had the nicest
thing to say about John Cena. Uma is it wait the fu here it
is? Don't We had great, great chemistry, chemistry. You know,
James didn't even know that. James Gunn didn't even know that when we got
casts. Really no, you ask him. He said to me, I
see you. He saw me an HBO Peacemaker, HBO Perry Mason, right,
and he started thinking about me over the pandemic. You know, he
was watching Perry Mason. He thought about me for this role, and he
started writing a role for me for Peacemaker. That was the impetus for him.
And when we had our zoom meeting, we had a zoom meeting.
That's how, that's how, that's how that went down. He said,
I said, you know, I've worked with John and he said, I
didn't know that. I said, oh yeah, I played a villain opposite
him in his first film Wow. And he went really and I said,
and I said, I said, as a matter of fact, we have
good chemistry because we actually get along. This is before you started filming this.
Yeah. I hadn't seen John in like ten years. I worked with
him on Psych was another episode we did. We did a thing on Psych.
I decided, I think two episodes. And they've been on here a
couple of times. I hope. I think they liked me, they had
me on. I don't really know. I had great fun working with them.
Um uh but uh, John and I Uh, I think uh.
I brought my son to see him Russell a couple of times and John h
John was super cool with my son. My son maybe you know he's twenty
one now, maybe ten years ago he was ten. My son was like
going to wrestling academy with Luke Perry's son out here in the valley Rick Drayson's
school. And uh and John did this thing. I think it was in
Arizona Summer Slam or something, a southing rather he knew where we were,
where we were sitting. We were sitting right close to the wa He had
arranged it, and he came into the ring with all that you know,
that start that he does, and he slid across the ring, came through
the ropes and leaned over and took his hat off and plopped it on my
son's head and then went back up on stage and started wrestling. He was
like, who is fucking intro life? And my son was just like,
you know, he'd been touched by Thor. I mean, yeah, you
know, it was like it was an amazing thing. That's amazing. What
a sweetheart. So we have a great we have a great relationship. That's
great. I hope John says the same thing, because I think we do.
I'm trying to figure out what show that was where they were being in
Arizona, Like the only one I could think of was was was WrestleMania.
Maybe it's what he's talking about, but I looked it up. There was
no scene and never went out and he threw the hat. He did not
put a hat on somebody's head right when he was when he when he came
into the ring against Batista. I was trying to see what. I didn't
know what other shows they did. I mean, I also only think of
Arizona as being a big show, you know, not necessarily like going to
either a house show or a Yeah, it sounds like you're describing a pretty
big production. I know that's what it does. It does sound like that
to me. It sounds like it's like where else when they when else have
they gone to Arizona for for a show? Besides um, well they could
do just a raw oh I mean, I guess, but I mean again,
to me, it sounded like something bigger. I mean, he said,
yeah, it does SummerSlam, which immediately made me think of um of
of of WrestleMania, because I don't think they'd do a summer slam it there.
But anyway, nonetheless, yeah, so he's a he's a Johnson to
fan, and I was, yeah, well, we don't know what Johnson
did have nice thing to say about him. He did say some not as
not as nice, because we can't have that. But he did say this
when I was at a bran eyed WWE champion not knowing which way was up.
Yes, with the film we did in two thousand and four or five,
in Australia called The Marine and the lead a villain in the Marine was
none other than the Robert Patrick. So he kind of got to and he
played one hell of a part for us. I would have had to be
a whole lot better to have sucked in that movie. And he really uh
in the yeoman's work and it was great, you know, all these years
later, you know, almost twenty years later, to come back and perform
with Robert again, and fittingly enough, he's my dad, He's Augie Smith.
I was in to have such an instrumental role in the series. It
was. It was awesome to be able to come back and perform with Robert
again. He's one of a kind. He is one of a kind.
He is a total bats and miss, you know. I mean obviously T
two go way back there, and he must have tons of stories and that
must be just neat stuff when the cameras are off and you just shoot it.
Um. I love that. I'll tell you what my favorite scene of
line ever he said right there, which was I would have had to have
been a whole lot better to have sucked in that movie in the Marine.
That he's that bad. I agree. Yeah, really I can see it.
I think he fucking sucks. He's so bad. I'm sure it's not
as bad now that I'm sure. I'm sure that me saying it's been it's
so bad, it's gonna not You're not gonna it's not gonna be as bad
to you. But um s Yeah, Robert Patrick will return under the cinemat
for sure. He's in a lot of stuff honestly that we're gonna be able
to watch. Um And that brings us to our tour for the Week Wrestling
Podcast with Jack and He Wrestling Podcast John Bonito, John Benito, there is
nothing out there about this guy. I was actually believe it or not,
though I was hoping we were gonna get him to come on for an interview.
Maybe we'll be able to get a Yeah, maybe we'll be able to
get a um A PostScript at some point because you know, he's friends with
an old college roommate of mine, Ken Francie. Oh sure, yeah.
Francie reached out to me once and said that, and so I remember,
and I asked him. I texted him early this week. I said,
hey, you know, can can you get him on? Like you know,
I'd love to have him come on and talk about The Marine, but
no can do, and there's just nothing about him on there. But he
does have a website, and his bio on his website says the following.
John's been directing since the age of twelve, shooting silent films with an eight
millimeter camera inherited from his dad. Droves of commercials followed post NBC Universal,
where he wrote and directed countless, countless award winning spots that all looked fantastic
and made people happy. His first movie was The Marine, an action comedy
that looked fantastic and made other people money. As a commercial director, John
has forged a successful career specializing in comedy and visual storytelling. His background as
an agency creative, his instincts as a filmmaker and his acute eye for casting
have provided a solid foundation for his award winning content, both branded and otherwise.
He values production design, visual effects, and harbor harbors a deep appreciation
of editors. John has written and directed everything from Super Bowl spots to multi
platform campaigns for Fox, ABC, NBC, HGTV, Discovery, Science Channel,
Bravo, and many many more. He has directed several of the world's
top athletes, along with powerful ads for high profile brands including BMW, Mercury,
Range, Rover, Direct TV, Subway, Nissan, TurboTax, Papa,
John's, Unilever, Unilever, and what the fuck is that? No?
Is it? What is it? What they own? Like? You
know, all kinds of like soap brand a huge like consumer package, Good
Time, I Got You, Una, Leaver, American Express, Pepsi,
Pet Boys, has Bro, Mercedes, Nissan, Chevy, and Pepsi,
just to name a few or way too many. John is currently working on
a slate of longer format stories in the form of TV series and discret screenplays.
With any luck, one of those projects will earn a paragraph on what
he calls his quote an unnecessarily long bio page. And then here's this LinkedIn
stuff. My career launched NBC Universe as a writer and director for network wide
identity and brand campaigns. I like this guy exactly, John Benito, John
my boy, John Buddy to work for me, pal Yeah, pow Arius
was John there? He is? Never talked him once? There is Who's
this? Who are you? I know who I am, but who are
you? You're John Benito? Yes, branding, branding campaigns. Big fan,
big fucking fan. I've written and directed award winning on air campaigns for
the Olympics, NASCAR, in the NFL, just name a few. I
left NBC to direct my first feature, The Marine, the action comedy.
Yes, definitely not an action comedy pal, but I think he's I think
he's retcon that because yeah, it sounds like a shot at sounds like brother
um star John Cena. My commercial workers included Super Bowl spots and multi platform
campaigns for all major networks. I have directed many of the world's top athletes
and have created powerful and I have created powerful, emotionally captivating ads for some
of the world's most high profile brands, including BMW all those ones we named
before. I am extremely well versed in all facets of content creation. God
damn, I got the sky on the phone. Yes, yes, I
need somebody who is well versed in all facets of content creation and brand initiation.
Yes. My passion for creative collaboration, handcrafted, visual storytelling, Oh
God, this is he's trying to get. Vince Hard has helped me earn
several top honors, But my greatest talent lies in my ability to deliver superb
creative under type. This is like chat, GPD, like write write a
biopage that would get Vince McMahon to come right, Well, my my create.
My passion for creative collaboration and handcrafted storyteller has helped me earned several top
honors, but my greatest talent lives in my ability to deliver superb creative under
tight deadlines and budgets. I'm a budgetary thinker. To refer to creative not
as to use creative as a noun instead of a instead of an adjective.
It's just like so tells you all you need to know about it, exactly
exactly. Oh, I'm working creative creative what well even that? Just to
call in creative is like one thing, But to call like the actual work
creative, like it's not, it's not described as creative if it is,
No, it is creative. That's what the thing is, creative creative.
Oh my god, it's it just it when when you understands superb, when
superb is the adjective for creative, there's a problem, right right, yeah,
like Cordon to who. But it's it's so like, you know,
I love this notion of like you can professionalize creativity, you know, like
like you can you can be assigned Okay, you go be creative over there
and come back in a day, right, right, that's already you're not
creative because like here's something, here's something, and make it creative, right
exactly. All that means is like the guy who makes all the money.
Let's people under thirty where whatever they want to work and they're the creatives,
right, and they get to do right, and the and the guy and
this guy makes money off of their ideas exactly exactly because he sits back and
I've got a good get a power point and I've got a good eye.
I need to you know, I need to be presented with creative. Right.
Everyone's got print out of the creative everybody's got a cup of like half
drink and Starbucks ice drinks on the on the table, cold brew please,
like a cold brew or some creative services that ah my god, with all
due respect to our good friend, who's your name, I'm already forgetting Brian
Fleming? Is it who join us to talk about working in creative services?
Oh man? But just this idea that like we've got, like you know,
this this room full of people that on assignment can just burst with creativity
at their desk. You know your job is to make mundane ideas look creative.
Yes, all right, that's what creative is. Can it's so creative
that they basically just copy something they saw recently in their personal lives. You
know what I you know, you know what I think is creative. I
think this is creative. Oh god, what are you doing? Ah?
Hell soide, open mouth. That's lovely. I'd have been the marine poster.
Yeah, this summer stone cold. Steve Austin is the marine of Vince
McMahon joint the marine, uh, the marine biologist. The marine who returns
home to find that his wife slept with his Yes, bad, I forgot
to tell you. I don't even care about my own family. He's Steve,
Yeah, Bud, everybody had a gun on raw? What the fuck
is that about? I mean, really enough removed from it to be like,
what the fuck was that? Oh? Man, jesus out. It's
like screw fucking Barretta. You know, like this guy's kind of picture's hair,
like you know what I mean, like oh that nineties, like the
curl right right as it's so fun. His fucking wife and in her cheetah
print, like look like a Jersey wife, you know, nothing against Chetah
print, but she's from just from Cincinnati. I thought, whatever, looking
looking jersey to me? Brother? What well I get you say Jersey?
You haven't? I guess I just decided, what do you mean jersey?
Brother? Were you talking about women? Why do you think she? Like?
What's to you? Oh? Cogan? Like, what the fuck?
Why would you dude? Why would you say that? Brother? Why would
you say? What's it to you? Dude? What shout out to whoever?
Pinball instead of pinfall on Twitter? And Hulk said that, like,
what do you mean pinball? Dude? Who's boy? I can't tell you
too. That was my favorite thing is about the whole my my favorite challenge,
which wasn't too much of a challenge during those fucking during those readings,
just the emotional reactions to questions I'm getting. Oh, It's what I love
about it is it's still it's still fair game because we're being faithful to the
text, right right, but we're just like the only thing that was added,
like verbach was occasionally some brothers and dudes. You never said brother,
dude. That just came out as I was speaking. And let me tell
you, there were thirty thousand things I wanted to say puns. I wanted
to make so, I wanted to do so much more than I could.
Damn right, No, not in a good place. Right now. He
is concerned and these questions aren't stopping. Fucking It's like, brother, I
thought it was gonna be like, allow, bro, that's gonna be like,
it's so good, brother, I need to go to the bathroom.
Dude, I love those moments on that. Not dude, I'm gonna take
a break, like fucking down some pills, fucking calm the fuck down.
Oh so great, so fucking great. Uh so uh. Principal photography for
the Marine began again September fifteenth, two thousand and four, and continued through
Genera that year too downright where it all begins again again. Remember he came
out with his grandson. Remember that when he comes out, they do that
video and he's holding Shane's kids so bad? What what a falsity's declin?
What a fuck off? Yeah? Break all these sons of bitches. They
got no power now, they got no say, they got no stroke,
they got no juice, they got nothing. And Vince is shaving the space
between the top of his mustache and the bottom of his top of his lip,
redecorate I'll say, redecorate the C suite to Christ and the board of
directors, Howard Hughes, Walt Disney, like all these fucking it's just horrifying.
Oh. I have looked at that picture of him on CNBC. I
mean thir thirty forty fifty times. He still can't I except what he looks
like. I love it so much. I know, it's like, it's
so amazing that it's played out like this. I need him to never like,
I hope he never loses the stash. I hope it was forever.
We didn't share this with the Solar System, but it was a great moment.
We were in LA getting prepared for the live show and the first photo
came out of him with triple h and great mood at the Hall of Fame,
first glimpse to the mustache, because you know, because people had said
there the rumor about it, but everyone had assumed that it was a fake,
that it was photoshop, Like I remember, like a month ago,
Well there was there was a photoshop. Yeah, oh there was one.
Okay, there was one. Yeah, but you know, because he came
to that raw that scene, it came back on in Boston, and word
was out from people who saw him backstage that he had a mustache, but
no one took a picture of him. But someone took a pre existing photo
and put a mustache on. I see, I see um. But when
I whenever I turned my phone around and showed you that picture of him,
and the look on your face, it was like everything changed at that moment.
Yeah. Yeah, even started reworking the live show because of it.
Yep, fucking can't look like that. Getting the sharpie getting out the best
thing. Oh god. Principal photography. Principal photography began September fifteen, two
thousand and four, continue through January of two thousand and five. The film
was shot primarily in Queensland, Australia on the Gold Coast, with some scenes
done in Calgary and Santa Clarita, California. Melts so wild, I'm putting
this together all these years later, months after I did that aforementioned interview,
he was on a movie set. Yeah, and the whole like the thrust
of it was like, they're gonna go with the sky. He's going to
be a really big deal. That's awesome. I didn't even realize. Yeah,
I mean again, like you think about because the movie doesn't come out
to two thousand and six. Yeah right, you wouldn't even know, like
you really think that they did this. They pulled the plug on this after
he won the title. But no, it was before, it way before.
And uh Melcher was would in the in the the Observer. He's like
seen his travel like crazy because he still had to do even though he was
filming, he still had to do certain wrestling days. There was a paper
I think it was No Mercy. He had to fly back for No Mercy
and the SmackDown taping after No Mercy and that's where he like he won back
the belt and then lost the belt back to Carlino or something like that.
And you know he was making trips from Australia to the US back. Yeah
he got stabbed, Yeah he did. I didn't hear that. I didn't
see that because they did. Um they did an angle where Carlito's um bodymick
you mean oh yeah, they stabbed him the night club that ye told the
viewers. Yeah, they were giving him They're right, they were trying to
get him off the TV for for a couple of months. Um. And
it was a big deal for the Marine, Believe it or not. I
mean there was a big deal for The Marine to be shot in Australia because
they were, you know, they were trying to make the Gold Coast a
place to make movies. Sure, um and before then, I mean they
gave them a ton of tax credits. Um. You know, we've heard
that a lot where where different states or different countries or whatever, we'll give
tax credits to American movies. And almost every story that was printed about the
making of this movie that took place, you know, that was written in
Australia. They would talk about the last movie that was shot there, which
was the House of Wax remake that started Paris Hilton. That was the last
movie to be shot in in in Queensland there And for example, right here
in this one from the Cold from the Gold Coast bulletin October eighth, two
thousand and four, the first feature film to be made on the Gold Coast
since The House of Wax will be an action thriller made by the World rest
Entertainment Group. It's a new one, the w EG the Group or the
War Wrestling Entertainment Group. The Marine which will start w B SmackDown superstar,
who was also known as the Doctor of Thugonomics, has begun production at Warner
road Show Studios with a budget of fifteen million Arts. Minister Anna Bly yesterday
boasted the film was fantastic news for Queensland, but a movie website has described
the buzz about the film as quote none unless you're a wrestling fan. Yeah.
Cina and his film debut, will star as an injured marine who returns
from the war to find that his girlfriend has has been caught up in a
kidnapping. The Pacific Film and Television Commission has offered ww Films incentives to employed
locals, such as a payroll tax rebate and a cast and crew salary rebate
for every Queensland are employed. About five hundred jobs were expected to be created
by the project, which would be filmed in the studios and locations around Brisbane
and the Gold Coast over the next eleven weeks. Miss Bligh said the Marine
was confirmed for Queensland following a location survey with World Wrestling Entertainment Films hosted by
the PFTC in conjunction with the Warner road Show Studios. The film co stars
Kelly Carlson of Starship Troopers two and Nick Tuck Fame and Robert Patrick of Terminator
two and The X Files, and will be directed by award winning director John
Bonito. Have you looked him up, by the way, this fucking face
man, he is. Oh god, this is fantastic news for Queensland and
brings total expendit chief for this financial year to thirty three million so far translate
into economic impactive more than a hundred one hundred million, says miss BlimE.
The queens And Government's PFTC has been working tirelessly with the state's film industry to
market Queensland. It's a film destination and this effort is now beginning to pay
off. You see the guy's face. What a what a fucking I mean,
thank I'll tell you what. Thank God is behind the paywall because fucking
Franchie to hear this and we never get him on the show. A nice
guy. I didn't say anything, well I didn't, motherfuckers. He looks
like it, you know itself a break man. Oh what a fucking moron,
that fucking hair Award winning director my ass. You know he got by
one local Emmy's You know, I mean that hair man. I mean,
I assume he's got a more you know, a more up to date haircut
than that piece of shit that he has on his head. Um. So
one of the h one of the first things they filmed was a love scene
between John Cena and his movie wife Kelly Carlson. Did you ever watch Niptuck?
Did you ever see the job? Yeah? Yeah, one a couple
episodes? Yeah, all right, this is this? This was Julian McMahon's
former porn star wife in the show. Is Kelly Carlson? Okay? Um?
And anyway, that the love scene, you know, which is kind
of a big deal when you haven't been in a movie before. It was
discussed. I'm at behind the Scenes featurette and we're gonna listen to it now.
John Cena has a natural charisma. The camera loves him or what's not
to love one? Yeah, she's hot. One of the first days of
shooting was him with Kelly and in the kitchen there where are we going to
do a love scene? Right out of the gate. Your first acting experience
is very difficult. It doesn't matter who you are, how long you've been
in this business. When you're sitting in your boxers are run underwear with a
stranger you have not met, and you have to kiss, It's uncoachable.
I just kind of said, Okay, I'm just gonna make out with his
chicken. It's gonna be great, and it indeed was. It was a
great second day. I think we did a little bit of the third day
too. Those are two good days, guys. John's a great kisser.
If Kelly says I'm a good kisser, I want the old Max hit him
cover. John's a great, great kisser, great kiss kisser, a great
kiss great kisser. Brother, What for how many of them? How many?
Dude? Why stop doing it all day, every day in my personal
life, every fucking ten minutes? What brother, dude? What did you
wait? What do you You did that on the guy was very unfair.
I'm trying to read the transmit. Then all of a sudden, his face,
where's this? Where's what's going? What? Brother? Kelly? Kelly
Clarkson, Right, Kelly Clarkson, Yeah, I know. I'm sure there
must be that might suck for her, you know, right. We got
a couple other clips here. This is this is our guy, John Benita,
John Benito talking about talk about working with John Cena. I first met
John Cena here in Australia. Funny thing as h I was so busy I
avoided a dinner at one point. Of course, he took it all personally.
He's very sensitive. He's very sensitive and man's three hundred pounds four percent
body fat yards inside. But a good movie scenes wrong. I think it's
also a new yea all right. He definitely at first glanced, John Benito
looks like a weird cat. He's got the original teen Wolf Michael Jackson haircut.
Sometimes it looks like Liza MINNELLI don't get him confused, but we're right
here. We say we share the same sense of humor, we share the
same the vibe on the set. I think I was a consummate professional,
I mean, just discipline. So it was great working with him. John
always shows up to play. Shooting a movie like The Marine has a ton
of challenges. It was a tricky shoot. You got night shoots, you
got swamps. Now I'm gonna I'm gonna hold on for one second because I
need you heard it before. I think that in that last clip, it's
important to hear John Cena here because we've heard him to normal. But listen.
He is in full Rapper k fabe character. Totally listen. Listen to
this ship. You'll see some stuff where I'm waist deep in a swamp and
that was pretty creepy. I ain't bade it an eavy on a polar spring,
you know what I'm saying. This has just gotta swamp water when you
step your foot sinks. It's Australia, you know, let's sink the States.
It will have little bitty snakes out here. That's creepy snakes. Those
are the animals that out here, and those are the animals I waste up
to it a swamp. That was pretty good. Amazing, amazing, it
really is. And I choose to think that that's closer to how really talks
than what we hear today. I agree. I agree at the time.
Yeah, yeah, I would think so. I would think so too.
Fucking you know rough, you know, off the streets of West Newbury.
Well, it's like it's like Scott Hall, you know, it's like after
the Razor character, Like yeah, yeah, he didn't totally try to replicate
the Razor voice, especially after the lawsuit around you know, trademarks and stuff,
right, but uh, but still like he always sounded like Razormone every
time he talked a little bit, a little bit yea, you know,
ye a little bit more than he should right, exactly exactly. Um,
there was a there was news report about a local actor, Remy, Remy
Broadway. Okay, all right, and he was in the movie. So
here this is from November second, two thousand and four. He was on
the cover of TV week days after his birth. His mother was a famous
French damcer and later a Gold Coast weather girl, and his grandfather is the
rate vaudevillian Albert Broadway. Now it's his turn. The twenty six year old
has just landed the role of a young marine held captive by terrorists in the
latest film to hit the coast. The Marine, the fifteen million dollar feature
made by the World Wrestling Entertainment Group Second Time That's Happened and directed by John
Benito, is in pre production. Remy will have a speaking role and feature
in the opening action sequence of the film, where WWE SmackDown superstar John Cena,
also known as the Doctor of Thugonomics right to be clear, rescues him
from the compound. He should be really good. Since they set me the
script. They have. They have been twelve amendments, so I'm not really
show exactly what my character will get to do. But I want now.
I want to play a marine who is captured and held hostage in an alcadic
compound, said Remy, who got his first break in show business as the
host of children's program Prime Possum when he was fourteen. I was doing major
tricks in juggling and things in Brisbane one day and I was approached by a
scout from Prime Television. We went on to do a pilot for Prime Possum
and I ended up staying for five hundred and fifty episodes. Although excited about
his role in the action thriller not an action comedy here action thriller, Remy
is not so happy about his film transformation. I'm playing a marine, so
they already told me that they will have to shave my head. I'm not
happy, very happy about that. I've been growing it for a while.
It was for another role, but it didn't get funding. Yes, Remy
has had small roles and major productions filmed here, including Scooby Doo, Rapid
Fear, and A Swimming Upstream where he played a young Murray Rose. He
also teaches acting at the Academy of Screen Performers and chess at Somerset College.
And there was a lot of a lot of weather. A lot of weather
happened. They massive rainstorms. They prevented them from shooting in a lot of
locations. Especially there was one as we'll see towards the end of the movie.
There's like they made a custom made lodge for the villains and it could
completely flooded and they had to wait days for it to dry out before they
could film there. So like they had to keep on moving things around,
um and like changing the schedule last minute and stuff. It was. It
was pretty wacky. One more let me see here. This is this?
Uh all right, yeah, this is here we go. This is uh
from the Courier Mail talking about the movie being shot over in h in Australia.
Fucknomics might have what it takes to get queensland struggling film industry back on
its feet. Phil BArch reports in the Trash Talking Body Slamming Round, Home
of Television's professional wrestling Circus. It would be a match made in pay per
view heaven, but for Queensland's film industry, it is a no holes barred
bout to bring Hollywood back to the Gold Coast. In its corner is the
US based sporting entertainment Colossus, World Wrestling Entertainment WWE's first foray in to feature
films. It's not oh not at all. WWE's first foray foray and to
feature films. Action thriller The Marine is being shot at Warner Road Show studios
and various locations around Brisbane and the Gold Coast. It starts ww SmackDown superstar
John Cena. Sena is the WWE self proclaimed doctor Thuganomics correct every fucking article.
Well, they gotta get it in there. I guess maybe it's a
prerequisite. Maybe it is. And better known for his five knuckles shuffle than
his acting ability, but weighing in at a muscle ball one hundred and twelve
kilograms and more importantly, with a ready made audience of millions of wrestling fans
around the world, he might just have what it takes to help get Queenland's
struggling film industry back on its feet. W W Films producer Joel Simon says,
you know, if you look at what they do fifty two weeks a
year, they do something like three hundred and eighty two events a year.
You know, they go out on a stage and some of them, like
John Cema, will talk unscripted for ten minutes in front of a live audience
and then basically he does his own stunts. So do they feel comfortable in
front of a camera where they are scripted and have stunts? Absolutely? Absolutely.
Simon, whose credits as a producer include blockbusters such as The X Men
and Wild Wild West, says W Film says the ability to produce the next
big action stars. You know, look at the Rock. You know,
he's one of the biggest stars in Hollywood today and his origin is the ww
WE. You know, we have over eighteen million people watch us weekly just
in the United States alone, and globally we have a huge following. Simon
says, W Films plans to produce up to four films a year, all
character driven, not special effects driven movies, with budgets under twenty million dollars.
By shooting its first two productions in Queensland tax rebates blah blah blah blah
blah. That's right now where we're looking to do character driven, not you
know, we're not going to do special effects movies, except that everything in
this fucking movie blows up. Everything in this movie blows up. Everything does
really, there are so many There are more explosions with actors in the foreground
shots than you can possibly foot. You can shake a fucking stick at Wow.
And most importantly, I think it's important to figure out what Sena did
in his free time. Okay, these are important questions. And you know
who's gonna ask important questions, Howard Stern. Howard Stern is going to ask
the tough questions when John Cena comes on the show to promote the film.
He laid on the set though, but with some of the girls who worked
out. We we filmed it on the Gold Coast of Australia, and that
is it's fuck city. It's a very nice place to be, did you
bang Australians? I got a couple of foreign experiences over there. Dude,
how many chicks are you going through a night? You are really out of
you. I'm not I'm not going to come out here and claim Will Chamberlain.
And it's not like I'm going out there to seek these chicks. But
you don't understand stuff. I mean, look, opportunities will arise I'm just
not gonna say no. Look at you. You are not gonna say girls,
He's not gonna say no. Everybody out there listening, girls, I'm
not gonna say no. Look at you. So good times, good time
party, who's having a good life? Throw another condombababe. Unbelievable What he
was married at this time? I think no, not yet? Not yet?
Two thousand and nine, yeah, two nine. When to get married?
Oh wow? That late? Huh yeah, yeah, I thought so
too. I thought he was married pretty early. But no. Um.
Also, I mean keep in mind too, we're talking a two year a
two year window between when the movie was filmed and when it came out,
you know again, kind of staggering. You got to think about that.
It's like so much happened between then. Uh, you know, and just
for ships and giggles. More of his love life was discussed on the un
show Everything just because you've absolutely you do absolutely so give a mercy. You're
a good looking guy. But but every I guess, would you ever ever
do a fat chick? Absolutely? I believe it or not. There was
an instance not too long ago where I hit the two eighty mark. You're
bank Wait a second, Yeah, let me get this international wrestling superstar.
Absolutely took home a two hundred and eighty pounds She took me home. I
didn't take her home. You're attracted to her, absolutely, and the experience
is great. Do you have a nice faith? Uh? She had a
nice smile. Why did you do that? I don't understand. At first.
It was kind of a challenge set out to me by the entire roster,
and it was like it was it was a thing where you won't do
it, Okay, I'll do it. But it wasn't like okay, i'll
do it. Would you come back with me? There was There was just
like a moment. I'm pretty polite and respectable to everybody, So it was
that moment and then she walks away and then the boys start getting on.
Yeah. I didn't want to here. And it wasn't like, okay,
I'll do it. Till between my legs going over that I said, not
only will I do it, I'll enjoy it. And I did. It
was a great night. And what was great about when a girl, a
two hundred eighty pound girl takes her clothes off, that's a shock a room.
Howard lights on everything good? No, no lights off? No,
no, this has to be done. I'm getting out of here. Lights
on. It was a great experience the fat I saw a whole lot of
women. She blew you absolutely, and I bet it was good because she
was great. It was great. And then you entered her. Yeah,
indeed it was. You gotta you gotta know your way around. You're a
real man. Maybe we should try. He seems to be able to do.
I don't know if he'd go that far. Was it Star Jones?
Are you with? Was it famous? No? No, but I did
up start very I hit her up. They were doing. Yeah you do,
black chicks, white chicks. You don't care. It doesn't matter.
Wow, it doesn't matter. Use condoms are absolutely, protection is huge.
Alec Baldwin does not use condoms. Really, I tried. That's what he
just told me. Man, I just don't believe it. Well, he's
got a steady girlfriend. So so this is a good life. It really
is. It's a different life because you're not working a typical nine to five.
So I don't have a family life. I'm not married, I'm not
settled down. I'm home one two days a month. So I mean,
you're on the road and you're traveling so with where is home home for me?
As when when the weather is good in New England, I spend time
in New England. When it's bad, I go to Florida. What about
the accusations that the wrestler made the other day here on our show, I'd
heard about this please doing gay man? Yeah, gay wrestler? Yeah right.
The guy's name is Chris, Chris Canyon. Absolutely, I know Chris
from Chris. Chris said some things about Vince, which you know, Vince
wasn't here to defend himself. I tried to get him on the phone,
but he says Vince is a home of fall and Chris claims that he was
fired because he is a gay man. Here's here's the weird thing about Chris.
And I've known Chris for a long time. He actually came out of
the closet after he was fired. Right, He just he wasn't any good,
He was not a good wrestler. No, it's he was hired by
WCW initially for like a demon persona called Mortis, which is pretty entertaining at
the whole mask and everything. He came to us with his WWWCW pisona of
Chris Canyon, which was just a guy in tights and with Vince, you
do have to have a certain technical bravado. You gotta be able to wrestle,
but at the same time as WWE, you gotta be able to entertain
the people. Right, Chriss wasn't any good? You say he was not.
He was fired because he was not a good entertainer, not because he's
gay or anything like that at all. He came out of the closet after
he was fired. Can can a person be openly gay and be in the
wweing? Absolutely? You don't mind wrestling a gatu. I don't mind wrestling
the gate it at all. What I mind pops the boner. You know
what, if I look around and there's not an empty seat in the house,
that's good with me. You're happy. You want to see business is
good. That means you get a paid I don't have to get along with
you. But as long as business is good, that's what. If you're
tights ripping, he fucks you right in the Yeah, she don't care.
No, I don't know if we'll be able to show that on loud TV.
Yeah, but I don't wear tights. I wear shorts for nothing.
It is a wild interview. I canna talk about Canyon talking about fucking and
Jesus Christ, and then you entered her, and then you entered her.
That's right, yes, exactly, That's what you need. That's what the
world needs. And you know what, that's the John Cena we need.
Oh he's in there, all right, that's the John Cena we need,
not fucking you imagine there's there's there's some woman out there. Yeah, you
know, going to the drive room for the third time today, and she
fucked John Cena and like she has that to hold onto for the rest of
her life. She fucked John Cena, like you know, right when she
can say like if she gets like cranky at her kids or her husband or
her life for her you know, yeah, yeah, but you know,
I am the only two hundred pound woman who's ever been fucked by John Cena.
Yeah, so there's that. Yeah, maybe not the only but on
one up no, but but you know what, I'm the one he talked
about on Stern. I'm the only two hundred pound woman that I will ever
know, yes that has fucked a celebrity, Yes, yea, and one
that and when he was a celebrity too, when he was a celebrity,
not like one, not before he was a celebrity, name became a celebrity.
It was while he was a celebrity. Right, He's out there doing
interviews about it, and he was, you know, fully jacked, fully
ripped, yep, and he looks fucking pounded me. And he absolutely he
absolutely heaved and you know what I mean, like just like you know,
conserted. You know, he fucking he fucking gave her an fu on the
on the on the bed, you know, had a fucking up you know,
looked her up, slammed it down. You know, you know this
is the thing, this is this is why she knows was so good because
no man, and she is always one of this, no man has ever
been able to fucking accordion her and just fucking jazz camera her. Just like
it's always a great moment when you get to the point where you say something
like, you know what, here's what it is, like, you know
what I mean, like, here's why it was so good. Yeah.
Yeah, it's like you adopt the voice of the person you like you're speaking
authoratively. They but that's what it was. That John Cena fucking he accordioned
her so that her fucking her ankles were by her ears and he just fucking
pounded, just jamming his cock down into her. All right, good,
there we go. So at least that's established. Uh so, yeah,
so the movie was being uh they were kind of establishing John Cena's acting ability
if you remember by the time WrestleMania twenty one rolled around and uh, you
ready to watch something here and we're gonna watch a little ready, We're gonna
watch a few good men feature r John and uh Jibbil gibbling bits. Remember
this. Yeah, I have this one more question, colonel. If you
gave an order that Orlando Jordan was not to interfere read Jordan always followed,
then why we're Doug and Danny bashmant Ringside putting the big show in danger?
God? He he reminds me of of well, I mean, yeah,
fucking Gibbil Ryan through both Pritchard Bruce Prichard. But he in this scene,
Scena reminds me very much of Mark Wahlberg so much. I can have the
court reporter read it back to it. I know what I said. I
don't have to have it read back to me like I'm some kind of child.
Why were the bashings at ringside? Colonel? Sometimes the men take matters
into their own hands. No, sir, you made it clear just a
moment ago. You men never take matters in their own hands. Your men
follow orders or you would lose the championship. So Orlando and Doug and Danny
Basham should have stayed away from Ringside. Am I right? Colonel? I'd
like an answer to the question. Jow enough, Jonathan, don't have to
answer that question. I'll answer the question. You won't answers. I think
I'm entitled to them. You won't answers. I want the truth. You
can't handle the truth. Son. We live in a world where I am
the champion, and this championship must be guarded by my men at whatever cost.
Who's gonna help me defend it? You, seena, I have a
greater responsibility than you can possibly fathom. You weep for the Big Show,
and you curse my men. You have that luxury. You have the luxury
if not knowing what I know. That Big Show's lost, while tragic,
probably saved this company, and then my existence wont protesque and incomprehensible to you.
Sells pay per views because deep down in places don't talk about at parties.
You want me to be champion at WrestleMania. You need me to be
champion, Yeah right, Grandeur majesty. We use these words the backbone of
an event that is bigger than life at Rustlemania twenty one on April third.
This will never be truer. I have neither the time nor the inclination to
explain myself to a man who wishes he will have the champion that I am,
and then questions the manner in which I defended. I would just rather
you say thank you and order the pay per view. Otherwise I suggest you
lace up your boots and meet me in the ring. Either way, I
don't give a damn what you think you are entitled too. Did you order
the ringside interference? I did? Who powerful stuff? Rustle Media goes goes
Hollywood. The original went Hollywood. Actually not even that was Rustamania twelve went
Hollywood. They say, did they say, well Hollywood back then, I'm
pretty sure they did. I'm pretty sure they did. Um. And then
there's one more thing, a little bit of promotion that happened. Uh.
John Cena made his I think it was his third appearance at this point on
Mad TV, third time hosting the show, and they did a sketch um
where it was marine deleted scenes. So here we go. You got the
screen, Yeah, the marine seeing one Take one. Man, it's good
to finally be on leave. I know I'm gonna spend my two days getting
drunk with my best friend. Oh, Brian, you mythical beast. I
know how I'm gonna spend my two days. Mate, I am gonna score
me some of that watch and learn. Hey, pretty lady, mind if
I get you a drink? Sure? Would you like a massage? What
a shampoo? Bore your shoes and I give your mouth pleasure for seven dollars.
You're a prostitute. What did you think I was a folklift operator?
You're very handsome. What's your name? Sold you? John Trackon? It's
yours, oh noble, But my friends call me town Cake. So you
got a deal of WI you gotta change for ten I'll tell you you want
for the whole ten dollars. I would bang you and throw an iPod.
Man, though you have yourself a deal. You smell like old coconuts.
Who those aren't coconuts? Your body is pulsing all over you. Oh my
god, with this goal. Alright, you got a change of plants.
We're shipping out immediately. Please promise me you'll come back soon to see me.
I promise I will. But right now, is there any place where
we can maybe I have a quickie, But I thought you had to go
right now. Don't worry. I'm fast love you. He's such a good
such. They must have heard that stern interview. They must have now maybe
Actually, no, I think this happened earlier. I don't know. Yes,
I know. He wrestling podcast with Jack He's wrestling podcast. He also
went to Uh. He also went to um Paris Island, spent a few
hours training with actual marines, something he isn't And uh they they did a
package, of course, and uh it was on the Uh they put it
on the the October nine, two thousand and sixth episode of Raw. I
play marine in the movies. This right here, this is where it goes
down, Parisian style, Carolina making future marines. These are the men and
women keeping it together. I am here to learn a little bit about what
these men and women go through. Oh. He wanted to get a better
understanding of what it's actually like to be a marine. I'm hopefully gonna not
get that kicked out of me too bad. Oh, we didn't take it
easy on him at all. You're taught, you wake, You're gonna die.
We want to see what it marines like. This is it? Let's
go jo out. He had hard and old especially in the middle of her
casualty, had to be evacuated from the combats own it. He had to
carry that casualty and manuverity obstacles at the same time. Took it all in
and he executed. And that's all you're gonna ask. And it kicks everybody,
but that's just the nature of the beast. That's a feeling that he's
excruciating on every level. Don't quit. That's the only thing that's in my
mind is don't quit. He never quit, And that says a lot about
a person. Got a lot of respectful. Been the most fatigued that I've
ever been. I've been covered in my own blood, I've been stuck in
cages, I've been put through every object you can imagine. But in a
matter of forty five minutes, I am at zero. I have nothing left.
So that says a lot about every person who gets to with the coast.
You're not quitting is something that we We spent thirteen weeks here putting in
the recruits not to quit. I am spent after four hours. I can
imagine what thirteen weeks on this island, how how that can harden up an
individual. It is an honor and privilege to be here today among the men
of women who are sweating it out and earn it here at brought on Parris
Island. We love you so so I think it's safe to say, correct
me if I'm wrong that John Cena has spent more time at Parris Island than
Sergeant Slaughter. Well, he's what I'm He lived in South Carolina for a
time, so you may have spent time there, just not think so in
active service. I don't think so. A fraud still go to the autograph
sessions and hoping no one brings it up. Oh what a fucking moron.
They premiered a movie premiered at Camp Pendleton, and again another package they did
aeron on raw About that here we go, Welcome to the world premiere of
the Marine. You know the Wwe love the part the truth. We're thankful
you all are here. This is really really fun with all the Marines that
shut up in the families and I love it. It's great. This is
unusual that we've been able to come to a military base open the movie.
It's something that doesn't happen. So it's fantastic for the WWE to come here
to a base and just show hard thanks for the military. Here's aus.
I think all the cheering in the background tells you a little something about the
high morale events like this first special. There is no better spot to have
this premiere, right here in front of each and every one of you.
Hell, I'm ready to get this thing started. Let's go to the brace.
There's a lot of fighting, a lot of shooting, and a lot
of stuff blowing up. You just got to see it to appreciate it.
And I'm not to watch it. How fars I missed everybody screaming a yell,
and and the Odes seemed into it. They seemed to join the movie
and it was along there with them. Thing was outstanding. John Cena never
quit. It's all about the marine. Tonight has been wonderful. It really
is heartwarming. For the very first time I've seen this movie on a giant
screen is in the company in the United States Marine Corps. I just hope
that they're just entertained. Me too, I just hope they're entertained. H
www dot com coord a triple H, saying in wwe are the action stars
of today. There's no reason we can't be the action stars of Hollywood.
I wouldn't say there's no reason, but WW hold on, he said,
wwe are the action stars of today. Okay, fine, I'm gonna problem
with that. So here it is. They're big, fucking this is huge.
Now now the movie opens, this is this is this is make it
or break it. Okay. Marine opens wide on October thirteen, two thousand
and six, in two thousand, five hundred and forty five theaters. Its
first weekend take was just over seven million dollars, earning an average of two
thousand, eight hundred and five dollars per theater, placing six tater total world
why gross after the during its theatrical run just over twenty two million dollars against
the twenty million dollar budget. So not so good. How was it received?
This is always important? The Awesome Chronicle wrote, with biceps the size

screened for the press. An unrepentant B movie, The Marine features the sort
of bare bones plot that would in previous years have served as a vehicle for
the likes of Charles Bronson, and Variety wrote junkie, jokey, and sometimes

its burly superstars as a movie lead in the title role. However, Frosh
theesp Oh, I love variety, Frosh theesp Yes, John Cena, and
evidence is little of the swaggering dynamics dynamism he has demonstrated while grappling and occasionally
rapping in the ring. Making his film debut as a feature helmer TV commercial
vet, John Benito aims for wall to wall action spiked with tongue in cheek
humor, but he tries too hard during scenes of hand to hand combat,
which he over edits into blurry abstractions. And he's much too fond of shooting
characters in slow mo as they casually walk from cheesy looking fiery explosions. As
if to compensate for the stiffness of his leading man, Benito has encouraged all
manner of mugging, shrugging, and wink wink nudge nudging from the villains.
Overall, though, The Marine looks like a production that plays great premium on
pinching pennies and cutting corners. Yet somehow this movie warranted a sequel. But
more on that next week. So that is that? Are you ready to
get Marine? Indeed? Wrestling Podcast with Jack In s
