I ran down the number of universities that didn't have a team in a bull game, didn't have a team make the women's tournament or the men's tournament, and the number of schools are Auburn, Boston College, Florida State, Mississippi State, Rutgers. In Stanford, whoa.

You know, all right, you're a great university, and your football team and your basketball team didn't make the tournament, the women's team didn't make the tournament. It's okay, Auburn. The football portion of that is tough to take. And then you throw in basketball, Boston College, Florida State, Mississippi State, and Rutgers. You know, it feels like the athletic department is bankrupting Rutgers if you look at all the money that they spend and they get nothing out of it. Remember Rutgers joining the Big Ten, how's that going? And you're looking at the amount of money that Rutgers is spent on athletics, and I don't think they're getting a dollar for dollar return on that. The longest active streaks making the tournament tom Izzo and Michigan State twenty eight consecutive years, Ganza twenty seven, and then it goes down to Purdue third active with eleven. All right, eight seven to seven three DP show. We'll get to your phone calls coming up. College sports are changing in real time. We saw that certainly the ripple effects with NIL and in football NIL you got more talent being spread out around the country and that paves the way for a story like Indiana football. But if you look at college basketball, for the first time since two thousand and eight, the four number one seeds reached the final four last season, and that kind of bracket chalk is rare, but it feels like that's going to become more common because it feels like it might be top heavy again, where you do have the Cinderella stories, and March Madness is full of that, but it still feels like these are the blue bloods who were at the top of college basketball again this year. And what happens is you'll get a talented player at a mid major and then all of a sudden, the team will be like, hey, why don't you come over here. We're going to pay you this amount of money. And we see this in college football as well, and I'm all for everybody getting whatever you can get, and we'll talk to Jay billis a little bit about this. The deeper Cinderella runs, I don't know if they're going to continue. We do love that, but it feels like if you look at the odds best odds to win the tournament, those teams are Duke, Michigan, Arizona, Florida, Houston, Iowa State, Illinois, and Yukon. For the most part, those are blue bloods.

Speaker 5: Yeah, Paulie, I saw a lot of these stories about nil comparing like what Duke Spens or Kentucky Spens compared to Sienna or Long Island University. But with college basketball, you only need one hot shooting night, you know, like Siena, you would think could still take down Duke one out of every twenty chances. I don't know if that works in college football, the physicality would just remove that.

Speaker 2: Yeah, you're getting players who are staying longer, and that's always been the mixture for a mid major to pull off a surprise that you'll get guys who have played together for three or four years, and that's invaluable when it comes to March madness. Do you take care of the ball? Can you shoot the three? They always talk about, you know, senior guard, play a coach who's been there before. You know, it feels like we bring up the same checklist there every March and usually is true to form, Yes, Tom.

Speaker 6: And basketball seems to be a sport where you have that strange matchup where even if you're far inferior on one night because you have a big man or you have a certain way of playing that messes up the better team.

Speaker 2: Yeah, yep, you're going to have that that you take an opponent lightly, or you know it's a neutral court, those kind of things, and you'll get a coach. And this is where the coaches are worth their value when you get to these moments being able to win a game and I always look at the best coach. Best coaching is so the Thursday Saturday or Friday to Sunday, So the Saturday Sunday games. After you won your first game, you know, you're trying to prepare a little more quickly than you would. You have a little bit of lead up to that first game that you have, and you're going to play a better opponent in that second round. All right, Seaton, do we have a poll question for hour two? We do?

It sort of elevates how great you think the movie is once you find out, dang this, Daniel da Lewis is gonna do it, Sean Penn's gonna do it. This must be a really good movie.

And with CNN, they thought that we were bringing a camera crew and they're getting publicity. And I remember that she was Madonna was just kind of starting, and I remember somebody saying Madonna is like it was five floors of dancing, and they talked about that Madonna was there, and that's first time I ever heard that, Oh, okay, this is going to be a big deal. Fast forward like a year later, maybe two years, and we were CNN was across from the garden, and I remember all of these girls were dressed as Madonna and they're all, you know, all over there outside the garden. And then I realized Madonna was playing Madison Square Garden and then you realize she's a big deal, big deal. So I of course got dressed up like Madonna and then I went to the show.

I just feel bad that Darren Peterson had a deal with that criticism as well as health problems, and when you're only nineteen and all of a sudden you have to deal with a serious health issue that can affect your actions and attitude in a lot of different ways. And Dan, I know Bruce Pearl is Jewish, but I wonder if his Jewish comment about turning down thirty million dollars will catch a little blowback today.

Like, but Clint Eastwood was one of those where where it's like, you know, like he would just come around and he would just just like walk up to me, and I would like kind of like look around to be like is this a gag? Like, dude, like I hear bad stories about how you're rude to people for no reason. But he would come up to me and just be like, hey, how you doing. How's the family? And I'm a fine good yours? I mean, like you hear things from the stories they ever be like, hey, how's your family? Everybody all right? And yeah he was. He was one of the nicest, truly, like like pleasant surprise.

Worst of the weekend happened last night and this one I got a name drop because it's sports related. There, I'm there at the hotel and all of a sudden in walks in Joe Burrow and Justin Jefferson and they're they're talking and they happen to stop right in front of me. I'm six foot one. These guys made me feel five foot one, and I'm like, can you guys, Like inside of my mind, I'm like, can you move your conversation? They literally stopped right in front of me to talk, and I'm like, I don't like this. You guys are like literally towering over me at this moment. Move away from me, Get away from me, like but because like people are like looking at me and they're look like the rest of the night. You should have seen these tall guys come by Gus and they like made him look like a kid. Oh my god.

Without question, how many teams can win. I think there are probably seven maybe that can win. We're reaching a final four, as you know, is a lot different. You know, you win four games, something happens in your bracket, but once you get to the final four, that's a different animal. So I think the list of teams that can reach a Final four is a long one, but the list that can win it, I think is a lot shorter.

You're going, no, Like, this is different and it's happened before. It happened two thousand and eight, first time since seating began. But this this feels a lot different. I think there's going to be more disruption and more upsets.

Speaker 14: I think we're seeing across the power conferences, that talent has spread out more.

Speaker 14: I don't think there's enough data to make a conclusion on what's going on with the lower conferences. You know, the coaches complain a lot, and I get why they complain, But the smaller conferences, when a player does really well, that player is likely to go to a bigger stage.

Speaker 14: Like the coaches go to a bigger stage, they go to the NCAA tournament for Miami, Ohio, and they leave for a bigger job, So you expect the players not to have the same ambitions.

Speaker 14: I don't know about you, but you know I had heard of Dalton connect and seeing him play at Northern Colorado, but I only saw him play because I was I was looking at another NBA prospect that he was playing against, and so was he required because he was under recruited out of high school to stay at Northern Colorado. Because it makes all the pearl clutching college people feel better. It's stupid, And you know, I don't think it's a loyalty issue, like were we loyal? You know, guys like you and me at our age. Were we loyal or did we just have no choice? I think it's more of the latter than the former.

Speaker 2: But I'm not surprised when I hear this guy started at this college and then he went to this college and now he's at this college. Would you limit the number of times you could transfer?

Speaker 14: So what you do is sign a player to a multi year contract and put significant buyouts in it. So the choice, the choice there is does the player sign away that right in an arms length bargaining position? And maybe you'd take more money to stay or less money to have the option to leave after a certain period of time. But it's got to be negotiated, and if you wanted to do something different, you do it by collective bargaining. You know, people often say to me, well, there's a salary cap in the NBA. Well, yeah, the players agree to it, and it's for the betterment of the whole, but the players are part of it.

Speaker 14: System, at least people of our age lived in a system where it was unilaterally imposed on the players, and you know that's that was never right it was never legal, and now that it's been ruled illegal by the Supreme Court, you know, people have gotten a little more rational about it.

Speaker 2: Talking to Jay billis so the mothership. We were talking about Rick Patino earlier today, his ability to evolve or change. I mean, you go back to you know, when he started embracing the three, when he was at Providence and you know, Louisville and Kentucky and Iona over in Greece. I mean, most of the guys his age about out because they don't want to deal with all of this, Like, how do you explain Patino?

Speaker 14: I think, first and foremost, he's just a basketball junkie, Like he has to have the game, and he's one of the best teachers that has ever lived. I put Huvee Brown up there in that category of understanding and teaching the game, and I just don't think he can imagine a life without it.

Speaker 14: I know he plays golf and he has other interests. You know, you've been the horse field and stuff like that, but he's not willing to go do that full time and just sort of enjoy the later stage of the life. He still wants to be in the fray, and I really like that. I mean, you know, can you imagine Dan when we were younger, Like I grew up in LA in the shadow of UCLA, and John Wooden retired when I was like in fifth grade in nineteen seventy five. He was sixty five years old, and I thought he was the oldest man that ever lived. And now these guys are going into their mid to late seventies, and I think it's great. But man, if you're a younger coach wanting to work your way up, you're going, geez, how old do I have to be to get a head coaching job that I want?

Speaker 2: The coverage of Miami of Ohio, how do you explain it?

Speaker 14: You know, I think it's been largely fair, Like I applaud Miami Ohio being in the field, but the committee is doing something they've never done before. They've gone essentially against their principles of strength of scheduling and having to play people like who did you.

Speaker 4: Play and who did you beat? Like, Look, Miami's really good.

Speaker 14: So I would not argue with any basketball persons that says, look, I think they're one of the best teams in the at large pool and they deserve to be in that's a fair judgment to make. But if we're going to sit here and say, like the chairman of the committee and I'm forgetting his name, and I apologize, but was talking last night saying, well, Miami went in the field before, you know, NC State or Texas or all that. But when they really scrubbed, they call it scrubbing. When they really scrubbed, the resumes. Then Miami of Ohio has moved to actually the last team in the field, and you're like, well, did you scrub them against the teams that you left out? Like you knows the what's the metric here?

Speaker 14: But now they're in the tournament, they're going to Dayton and they have an opportunity to prove themselves, and I think they're going to quit themselves really well because they're really they're very, very good.

Speaker 2: Yeah, well it's basically a home game for Miami of Ohio because in Dayton, you know, that's forty minutes away. Would you have if you were on the committee, would you have argued to keep them out with their resume?

Speaker 14: I wouldn't have argued that, But I said, what are our principles here, Like, you know, we're looking at these other teams with different metrics than we're looking at this team. And look, I think it's great, Like I think it's a great story. It makes everybody feel good, it's great, and so I'm in favor of them being in the tournament. But there's nothing in the committee's principles that say, hey, we got to have a feel good story here, because you know, there seems to be this feeling that the little guy kind of deserves a chance, and they have a chance. Everybody has the same chance. This is the fairest thing possible that everybody, every school, every team has the same chance to get in the tournament when you're automatic bid against your peers in a league you've chosen to be in. If you can't do that, you go in the pool with everybody else and they take the best teams out first. Now, if they're one of the best teams, then take them out. I'm fine with that.
