<v Speaker 1>He'll be like a bead.
<v Speaker 2>Hey, everybody, welcome to Game Best Mornings with Me Jeff Greb,
<v Speaker 2>your host from giant bomb dot com.
<v Speaker 1>Thank you for tuning in. In this episode, we're gonna be.
<v Speaker 2>Talking about Nintendo poisoning the well for used games and
<v Speaker 2>will that next Final Fantasy return to turn based. It's
<v Speaker 2>gonna be a good one because we have Janet Chow
<v Speaker 2>on the show.
<v Speaker 1>Jan How are you doing?
<v Speaker 3>I'm doing great. I'm happy to be maybe the first
<v Speaker 3>repeat two days in a row guest on GMM. Also great.
<v Speaker 3>I watched Superman yesterday. Oh I was it? Yes, it
<v Speaker 3>was very good. It has all the James gun gunnerisms
<v Speaker 3>and I enjoyed it a lot. I thought of our
<v Speaker 3>big dog, Mikey O'Leary the whole time because he's a
<v Speaker 3>big Superman fan. Also, I guess great Miller, and I
<v Speaker 3>was happy for the both of them.
<v Speaker 1>Yep.
<v Speaker 2>Yeah, it does seem like a lot of Superman fans
<v Speaker 2>are happy.
<v Speaker 1>I have some.
<v Speaker 2>I have some other Superman fans in my life who
<v Speaker 2>are like less happy, and I'm happy to report they're
<v Speaker 2>not like unhappy because they're Snyder guys. They also hated
<v Speaker 2>those movies, so Oh, it might much be impossible to please.
<v Speaker 1>Man.
<v Speaker 2>If you're not getting what you need from Snyder or
<v Speaker 2>Jam's gun, where else can you possibly go? Yeah? But yeah,
<v Speaker 2>I'm looking forward to seeing this movie. Will I have
<v Speaker 2>a chance to see it anytime soon? Probably not, but
<v Speaker 2>I want to check it out for sure. I'm mad
<v Speaker 2>at you, though, because I'm sure you told me about
<v Speaker 2>it before, but you weren't adamant enough. I really want
<v Speaker 2>an Osmo pocket breeze. That what it is, and they're
<v Speaker 2>expensive now they got expensive.
<v Speaker 3>They got expensive now they're a little bit hard to
<v Speaker 3>find as well. Yeah, I should have been banging. Here's
<v Speaker 3>what we do, grub, we throw the blame to another person.
<v Speaker 1>Okay, let's let's do it.
<v Speaker 3>Yeah, because back Along had it way before any of us.
<v Speaker 3>If you remember at the TGAs, he had it and
<v Speaker 3>he just threw it in his pocket. He was recording
<v Speaker 3>us all around.
<v Speaker 2>Sly he was doing on the slide, didn't say anything,
<v Speaker 2>was kind of being a little bit you know, uh,
<v Speaker 2>you know, like sneaky about it.
<v Speaker 1>And I'm keeping it down there.
<v Speaker 3>Yep, I know.
<v Speaker 1>I I'm ready to blame Backlar for it. Okay, sounds good.
<v Speaker 3>I know that Matt Rory's notorious for liking the game.
<v Speaker 3>Mister shifty the baccolar was being a little mister shifty.
<v Speaker 2>I uh yeah, so I got a gamble, but I
<v Speaker 2>have to put my phone in it and it always
<v Speaker 2>hits the volume button. It's kind of annoying to use
<v Speaker 2>that that way, and like seeing the quality that you're
<v Speaker 2>getting out of that Osmo. Uh, what I'm really saying
<v Speaker 2>is hi, DJ just just I'll go, Yeah, what's up, dude?
<v Speaker 3>Please send greub a drone and a Osmo mobile. Iie,
<v Speaker 3>send me the action cam. I'll get over my hatred
<v Speaker 3>of GoPros and action cams. Please.
<v Speaker 2>Yeah, GoPro could still the problem action cams from dji though,
<v Speaker 2>bumbs up. Yeah, I want to mess around with that stuff,
<v Speaker 2>especially like having like this new kitten running around like,
<v Speaker 2>I'd be great to take a bunch of video right now,
<v Speaker 2>turn her into a social media star, make money off
<v Speaker 2>this animal.
<v Speaker 3>Yeah, better than nothing, super premium tier. You get access
<v Speaker 3>to all of the GB pets.
<v Speaker 1>I think that's not a bad idea.
<v Speaker 2>Yeah, let's make it happen, all right, let's explain ourselves
<v Speaker 2>someone better.
<v Speaker 1>Hey, we're Giant Bomb.
<v Speaker 2>Go to giant bomb dot com slash join, and if
<v Speaker 2>you do that, you can help us create stuff like this,
<v Speaker 2>do cool things like we did at Summer game.
<v Speaker 1>Fest, have a lot of other cool ideas pop off.
<v Speaker 1>We're in the planning phase for a bunch of fun things.
<v Speaker 2>But really we just you know, we could use your support,
<v Speaker 2>and we know there's a a lot of you out
<v Speaker 2>there that want to support us, and you could do
<v Speaker 2>that by going to giant bomb dot com. Slash join
<v Speaker 2>gets you add free episodes, a bunch of stuff like that.
<v Speaker 2>As far as this show goes, most weekdays, I Jeff
<v Speaker 2>Grubb will help piece your gaming life back together. That
<v Speaker 2>includes breaking news and maybe even some of our own
<v Speaker 2>original reporting. For all these topics, I could the input
<v Speaker 2>of a bona fide expert who will make me look smart.
<v Speaker 1>If you were watching live on twitch, welcome.
<v Speaker 2>You can always listen to the show later on podcast
<v Speaker 2>feeds by searching for game Mas Mornings or find the
<v Speaker 2>RSS feed on giant bomb dot com.
<v Speaker 1>You can also catch the show later on YouTube. Hello YouTube.
<v Speaker 2>All right, we have a lot to get into, so
<v Speaker 2>let's start the morning mess with The FBI has seized
<v Speaker 2>a switch rom site as part of a law enforcement operation.
<v Speaker 2>This comes from Ali Reynolds at Nintendo Life. A major
<v Speaker 2>switch rom site, nsw twou has been seized by the
<v Speaker 2>FBI as part of a law enforcement operation. As reported
<v Speaker 2>by Kotaku in NSW to you was one of the
<v Speaker 2>better known repositories of switch ROMs, which allowed users with
<v Speaker 2>hacked switch consoles to download first and third party games
<v Speaker 2>at will, often before their official release dates. In other words,
<v Speaker 2>then it's a website that Nintendo was probably keen to
<v Speaker 2>vaporize quicker than Banno snap in his fingers. The full
<v Speaker 2>message reads, this domain has been seized by the Federal
<v Speaker 2>Bureau of Investigation it incordance with a seizure warrant issued
<v Speaker 2>pursuant to eighteen USC twenty three, twenty three issued by
<v Speaker 2>the United States District Court for the Northern District of
<v Speaker 2>Georgia as part of a law enforcement operation and action
<v Speaker 2>by the FBI. Apparently, the FBI excuse, we worked with
<v Speaker 2>a Dutch law enforcement or organization to actually go in
<v Speaker 2>there and do this. Yeah, Nintendo is activating the FBI
<v Speaker 2>courts in Georgia European law law agencies to take down
<v Speaker 2>these websites.
<v Speaker 1>It is still very serious about this, and I'm.
<v Speaker 2>Like kind of like looking at this, Jen and is
<v Speaker 2>this them continuing the you know, the dialed up we
<v Speaker 2>are going to sault the Earth for piracy and all
<v Speaker 2>this stuff that they've been on, or is this still
<v Speaker 2>like a remnant from Hey, we're launching a new console.
<v Speaker 2>Let's like really kind of go reset things a little bit,
<v Speaker 2>kind of got like, you know, plus place some leads
<v Speaker 2>that are these websites and then throw them out and
<v Speaker 2>hope that we can buy ourselves some time for the
<v Speaker 2>switch to to not have to deal with as much
<v Speaker 2>piracy and that this doesn't have anything to do with
<v Speaker 2>Switch to piracy itself, But it seems like the kind
<v Speaker 2>of thing that we would discourage someone else from wanting
<v Speaker 2>to start another website that might have anything to do
<v Speaker 2>with Switch to Piracy.
<v Speaker 1>Does that sound right?
<v Speaker 3>Yeah? I think it's a little bit of both. I
<v Speaker 3>don't necessarily see a rom site which may be catered to,
<v Speaker 3>you know, generally older games and not current gen I
<v Speaker 3>don't think this would deincentivize someone to stop their work
<v Speaker 3>on hacking the switch to If anything, I think this
<v Speaker 3>may embolden someone. But this does really stink grub for
<v Speaker 3>you know, game preservation one percent. Like I understand Nintendo
<v Speaker 3>wanting to crack down on piracy, but sometimes you know,
<v Speaker 3>there are just games or even fan translations that are
<v Speaker 3>not easily accessible, or I don't know, maybe perhaps the
<v Speaker 3>game cartridge or game cart and it's one of your
<v Speaker 3>favorite games and you just want to go back and
<v Speaker 3>preserve and play through that. This really does stink, And
<v Speaker 3>I would hope that not only Nintendo, but perhaps the
<v Speaker 3>FBI have bigger fish to fry than this.
<v Speaker 1>Yeah, that's the thing for sure. Yeah, it's.
<v Speaker 2>Like today's piracy turns into tomorrow's preservation for sure, where
<v Speaker 2>a lot of the work done to ensure the long
<v Speaker 2>term accessibility of these games is done in the moment
<v Speaker 2>so that people can play free shit. So it's hard
<v Speaker 2>to like untwine or you know, pull those things apart.
<v Speaker 2>But Nintendo has the right to go out and do
<v Speaker 2>stuff to protect it stuff if it wants.
<v Speaker 1>I just think it's always so heavy handed.
<v Speaker 2>So dra coming so like just a sledgehammer hitting an
<v Speaker 2>ant over and over again.
<v Speaker 1>Because we could see the numbers, we could see how
<v Speaker 1>well the switch one was doing and how well the
<v Speaker 1>switch two is doing.
<v Speaker 2>Now again, that doesn't mean that they shouldn't do anything,
<v Speaker 2>I guess, but I don't see this having much of
<v Speaker 2>a difference one way or the other.
<v Speaker 1>And it does.
<v Speaker 2>It does feel like it might have a bit of
<v Speaker 2>a chilling effect on this space where you know, the
<v Speaker 2>guy that's the hobbyist, you know, you know, whoever's going
<v Speaker 2>to be doing the work to get an emulator built
<v Speaker 2>or to rip some games. They're doing it because they're
<v Speaker 2>a hobbyist and that's what they want to do. But
<v Speaker 2>then like getting that collected into one space online, I
<v Speaker 2>could see that being a collective effort, and that's the
<v Speaker 2>kind of stuff that Nintendo's trying to throw a bowling
<v Speaker 2>ball into to knock it all down. And I think
<v Speaker 2>it will buy them a little time, but I'm skeptical
<v Speaker 2>that will make much difference in the end. But you know, again,
<v Speaker 2>it's got a ton of money to spend to try
<v Speaker 2>to do stuff like this.
<v Speaker 1>And so they're doing it, and it's a little bit
<v Speaker 1>scary to see.
<v Speaker 3>You know, grib you use the metaphor of like a
<v Speaker 3>sledgehammer and an ant, but like you know, an ant
<v Speaker 3>is so tiny in comparison to a sledgehammer that I
<v Speaker 3>feel like there is a strong likelihood of the ant
<v Speaker 3>just scurring away. And I feel like that is going
<v Speaker 3>to to happen with these rom sites. You squash one
<v Speaker 3>and then you know, the ant will get away and
<v Speaker 3>continue to go back to its colony or start a
<v Speaker 3>whole new colony. Right Like, there is a very strong
<v Speaker 3>likelihood that just because the FBI and Nintendo or gets
<v Speaker 3>one big ROM site that there's that doesn't stop another
<v Speaker 3>ROM site or even a Google drive from being shared
<v Speaker 3>around on these communities. And the unfortunate part is when
<v Speaker 3>you do make these strong, loud efforts to tamp down
<v Speaker 3>on piracy, Rabbit just encourages more.
<v Speaker 2>But yeah, the people are like, well, we better get
<v Speaker 2>serious about this so that we can ensure the long
<v Speaker 2>term viabilities some of these things. So yeah, and that
<v Speaker 2>there's going to be people with those sorts of attitudes,
<v Speaker 2>you know. As Shawn points out in chat, it's weird
<v Speaker 2>that they did. They kind of went after Uzu and
<v Speaker 2>the emulators first before going after stuff like this, because
<v Speaker 2>this is clearly in violation of copyright law. Sure, this
<v Speaker 2>is clearly something that they can do something about, and
<v Speaker 2>they can wield the power of the f to do
<v Speaker 2>something about this, because the FBI enforces copyright law according
<v Speaker 2>to every VHS tape that I started as a kid. Yeah,
<v Speaker 2>so I yeah, so it's like I get that to
<v Speaker 2>a certain degree, but you know, them doing this in
<v Speaker 2>conjunction with we're going to try to really disrupt the
<v Speaker 2>development of emulators just makes it look that makes it
<v Speaker 2>look like the bad guy to me. Yeah, and I'm
<v Speaker 2>like I have less patience for it because of that.
<v Speaker 2>It's like, oh, well, they're just enforcing copyright law. I
<v Speaker 2>could give them the benefit of the doubt. I'm like
<v Speaker 2>willing to do that sometimes, but here it's just like
<v Speaker 2>it's very clear what you're trying to do, and you're
<v Speaker 2>just trying to disrupt that whole scene and make it
<v Speaker 2>more difficult for anyone to work in that space because
<v Speaker 2>Nintendo could come down on you and that, you know,
<v Speaker 2>pretty similar to the next story, but from the consumer
<v Speaker 2>point of view, you might want to be careful buying
<v Speaker 2>pre owned Switch one games for your Switch to This
<v Speaker 2>is from Gavin Lane at Nintendo Life. It's come to
<v Speaker 2>light since switch To launch that Nintendo is cracking down
<v Speaker 2>on people who make copies of its software legitimate or
<v Speaker 2>otherwise by banning consoles into text playing copies of switch
<v Speaker 2>one games a worry for anyone considering a second hand
<v Speaker 2>switch to Why is this a concern JAMP because you
<v Speaker 2>go to Facebook marketplace, like this person on Reddit, did.
<v Speaker 1>You get the used games?
<v Speaker 2>But the used games are used and being sold because
<v Speaker 2>the person bought those games and then and then downloaded
<v Speaker 2>them to their system, that they copied them, and now
<v Speaker 2>that those games are circulating online with the like the
<v Speaker 2>serial numbers or whatever, the identification identifying materials that say
<v Speaker 2>it was that card that they're using. So when it
<v Speaker 2>goes back down to the wild as just a card,
<v Speaker 2>Nintendo can't tell the difference. And it's like, oh, that
<v Speaker 2>is one of these games that's copied and being circulated online,
<v Speaker 2>So let's go ahead and shut this system down. And
<v Speaker 2>that's what happened to this person, and it's like, okay,
<v Speaker 2>now the good news.
<v Speaker 1>The person got on.
<v Speaker 2>The phone with Nintendo and was like, hey, look I
<v Speaker 2>have here are my here's the cards, here's pictures of
<v Speaker 2>the things I actually bought. Here's the here's a picture
<v Speaker 2>of the Facebook marketplace listing. You can see what happened here.
<v Speaker 2>I just I literally own these things. Can you unban
<v Speaker 2>my switch to and they did. Okay, they went through
<v Speaker 2>the process of helping them, but to me, Jan the
<v Speaker 2>damage has been done. Like with something like this, people
<v Speaker 2>are now going to start maybe being afraid to get
<v Speaker 2>secondhand games, and that chilling effect will be just enough
<v Speaker 2>that like it's gonna make that marketplace a little bit
<v Speaker 2>more difficult, or the person who would rather save money
<v Speaker 2>might be scared of losing their five hundred dollars system
<v Speaker 2>they just bought, even if Nintendo promises sometimes they'll fix it.
<v Speaker 2>They did say something to this guy along the lines of, well,
<v Speaker 2>we're able to help you this time, but if it
<v Speaker 2>happens again like that sort of thing, It's like, Okay,
<v Speaker 2>are you worried about a chilling effect on the used
<v Speaker 2>games market because to me, I'm like Nintendo's getting that
<v Speaker 2>unintended effect here, although maybe how unintended is it really,
<v Speaker 2>I don't know.
<v Speaker 3>Yeah, one hundred percent grub this really stinks for people,
<v Speaker 3>you know, trying to save a buck or people that
<v Speaker 3>uh yeah, one hundred percent just the I don't think
<v Speaker 3>this actually helps Nintendo more by clamping down on use
<v Speaker 3>games because how much are they actually going to make
<v Speaker 3>over these like forget take game Spot or games stop
<v Speaker 3>out of the equation just going from like a person
<v Speaker 3>to person sales. I don't think that person that is
<v Speaker 3>going to Craigslist, Facebook Marketplace, other reselling websites, I don't
<v Speaker 3>think if their game gets bricked that they're going to
<v Speaker 3>be incentivized to go buy that game again. I think
<v Speaker 3>if anything, they just be sad. This stinks the stinks
<v Speaker 3>grub because like there are think about the people that
<v Speaker 3>desperately want to switch to on are super excited to
<v Speaker 3>get one, and someone on Facebook Marketplace throws in a
<v Speaker 3>couple of games because they just want to get rid
<v Speaker 3>of it they need some money, and then the person
<v Speaker 3>buying it just receives a brick after activating or switch to.
<v Speaker 3>This doesn't make any sense to me because this this
<v Speaker 3>kind of feels like the antithesis grub of what miam
<v Speaker 3>Moto was talking about in the new story we brought
<v Speaker 3>up yesterday of really designing a product for the consumer.
<v Speaker 3>This feels anti consumer through and through.
<v Speaker 2>It's at least it's at least hostile, like it's Yeah,
<v Speaker 2>it definitely feels like, oh, this is something that I
<v Speaker 2>shouldn't have to worry about because there's an understanding of
<v Speaker 2>way this has worked, and really I think the I
<v Speaker 2>don't know for sure, but it seems to me like
<v Speaker 2>the use game market and the new game market has
<v Speaker 2>found this sort of equilibrium of Hey, developers used to
<v Speaker 2>be in publishers used to be very worried about the
<v Speaker 2>used game market. They're probably less so because it's just
<v Speaker 2>is not as robust as it maybe once was, because
<v Speaker 2>games game stop is less you know, viable than it
<v Speaker 2>once was. Yeah, I don't know, maybe that's maybe that's wrong,
<v Speaker 2>but they to me, it seems like they don't need
<v Speaker 2>to be doing what Xbox was thinking about doing at
<v Speaker 2>the beginning of the Xbox one of forcing people to
<v Speaker 2>go through hoops for use games or whatever it was
<v Speaker 2>going to be. And every little layer of friction you
<v Speaker 2>add on top of it a transaction like this, whether
<v Speaker 2>that's perceived or not. And in the perception here would
<v Speaker 2>be maybe if I get to use game, I switch
<v Speaker 2>to could stop working. Every little fraction there, doesn't, you know,
<v Speaker 2>chips away at this space a little bit more. And
<v Speaker 2>I know part of the value of buying a game
<v Speaker 2>physically is that you can do what you want with
<v Speaker 2>it on the used market, Yeah, and kind of getting
<v Speaker 2>in the way of that is something I think Nintendo
<v Speaker 2>should do their best to avoid, and it doesn't seem
<v Speaker 2>like they really care, and of course they don't because
<v Speaker 2>it does it's not really about any of their money,
<v Speaker 2>So I, I mean, I get it from an intellectual level,
<v Speaker 2>but the chilling effect this could have I find to
<v Speaker 2>be very frustrating, and Nintendo should do something to stop
<v Speaker 2>that from happening.
<v Speaker 3>Because greub, I think about instances where perhaps maybe you're
<v Speaker 3>sharing a cartridge with your own household and maybe you
<v Speaker 3>just have different Nintendo accounts, something similar could happen where oh.
<v Speaker 1>I just wouldn't put it past it.
<v Speaker 3>Yeah, yeah, Like I just gave like my kid or
<v Speaker 3>like my cousin, my sibling a game card because I
<v Speaker 3>wanted them to check it out or they want it
<v Speaker 3>to check it out, and then they're switch to gets
<v Speaker 3>bricked because of the same instance of the serial number
<v Speaker 3>getting brought up online on a different system.
<v Speaker 2>Right, And I like, I like, you would hope that
<v Speaker 2>there'd be protections against something like that happening. But I
<v Speaker 2>just to me, all this sounds like Nintendo's not so
<v Speaker 2>worried about false NEGA for false positives. It is just
<v Speaker 2>trying to do it as much as it can to
<v Speaker 2>run roughshot on not the use game market necessarily, but piracy,
<v Speaker 2>and that's having a lot of other effects, and like,
<v Speaker 2>so what we got to do this and what like
<v Speaker 2>it could go that far where it's like maybe they
<v Speaker 2>don't have full protections in that stuff. And the fact that, like,
<v Speaker 2>that's the point here is that we're having this conversation about,
<v Speaker 2>you know, this far fetched possibility. But yeah, the fact
<v Speaker 2>that we're considering it just shows like, don't I don't
<v Speaker 2>really fully trust Nintendo about this stuff right now? And
<v Speaker 2>do they care? They're making a lot of money, so
<v Speaker 2>of course they don't.
<v Speaker 3>I wonder grub what is what are the actual numbers
<v Speaker 3>and I don't know if those are available anywhere, if
<v Speaker 3>anyone is able to track them about how much piracy
<v Speaker 3>is creased through Nintendo's efforts versus how many I guess,
<v Speaker 3>let's say innocent people have been caught in the crossfire
<v Speaker 3>of Nintendo's efforts to clamp down on piracy. That either
<v Speaker 3>consoles are getting bricked or the accounts are getting delisted
<v Speaker 3>or whatever.
<v Speaker 2>Yeah, I mean, And that's one of the frustrating things
<v Speaker 2>with this kind of thing is that this person went
<v Speaker 2>on Reddit kind of told their whole story. Human nature
<v Speaker 2>is usually like, but something breaks, you assume it's like
<v Speaker 2>something else is going on, and not everyone goes through
<v Speaker 2>the open channels to them to get their stuff fixed,
<v Speaker 2>and goes and calls Nintendo and gets has says, hey,
<v Speaker 2>can you fix this stuff for me? Now that's on them,
<v Speaker 2>I suppose, but you know, in this case, it's like
<v Speaker 2>if Nintendo bricked your system because you did nothing wrong.
<v Speaker 2>I still feel like there's gonna be people who fall
<v Speaker 2>through the cracks there and just aren't aware of the
<v Speaker 2>ways to get a hold of Nintendo to get it fixed,
<v Speaker 2>or would assume they have to just go buy a
<v Speaker 2>new one. The number of people during the Xbox three
<v Speaker 2>sixty bricking thing that you know that they extended that
<v Speaker 2>warranty for forever for a very long time.
<v Speaker 1>You could have just got to replace, but send it
<v Speaker 1>in too Microsoft.
<v Speaker 2>The number of people I know, I knew who just
<v Speaker 2>bought new Xbox three sixties was crazy.
<v Speaker 1>So that's human nature.
<v Speaker 2>And I just feel like Nintendo is kind of doesn't
<v Speaker 2>care about any of that, not really paying attention to
<v Speaker 2>those the effects that it's having as a second a
<v Speaker 2>second hand way, and it's causing problems that they just
<v Speaker 2>don't care to solve.
<v Speaker 1>Yeah, I'm frustrated by it all right's oh yeah, got.
<v Speaker 3>Real quick grib Like. I know that the example gets
<v Speaker 3>brought up a lot jokingly of like, oh, the parent
<v Speaker 3>or the grandparent that tries to buy their kid a
<v Speaker 3>switch to your grandkid has switched to. But those people
<v Speaker 3>especially and then the little kid that they're trying to
<v Speaker 3>buy that gift for, they're especially not going to know
<v Speaker 3>what happens when they buy something secondhand and it just
<v Speaker 3>up fine, but then it breaks.
<v Speaker 2>Yeah, and I see, like the Riiseland chat, sayd, the
<v Speaker 2>chances this happening to someone are ridiculously low. For now,
<v Speaker 2>I don't, like, you know, I've been buying stuff secondhand
<v Speaker 2>for a long time. I don't do so much anymore,
<v Speaker 2>but for a while there, Like yeah, during the Xbox
<v Speaker 2>three sixty era, if you were trying to buy an
<v Speaker 2>Xbox three sixty on Craigslist, you had to do a
<v Speaker 2>lot of work to make sure it wasn't banned from
<v Speaker 2>being online because there was a lot of hacked Xbox
<v Speaker 2>three sixties. It became it was rare until it wasn't,
<v Speaker 2>and then it was very common. To run into a
<v Speaker 2>bricked Xbox three sixty or a bricked for online play
<v Speaker 2>Xbox three sixty.
<v Speaker 1>So uh, I like it's rare for now. I don't
<v Speaker 1>think it's going to be rare for that long.
<v Speaker 2>If there's a situation where people are dumping these games
<v Speaker 2>like frequently and you know that's just dumping maybe and
<v Speaker 2>maybe like that is a thing where it's like, well,
<v Speaker 2>only one copy needs to be dumped, and once it's online,
<v Speaker 2>it's online. Sure, but that's for now. Like what if
<v Speaker 2>we get to a situation where there is like game
<v Speaker 2>repros or or something like that. That's the kind of
<v Speaker 2>thing that very quickly could get out of hand. So yeah,
<v Speaker 2>for now it's rare. I don't think it's rare enough.
<v Speaker 2>And that was never really the point. The chilling effect
<v Speaker 2>is the thing I'm definitely worried about, where just people
<v Speaker 2>hear these stories and get worried about it and they're
<v Speaker 2>less willing to spend money on the US market and
<v Speaker 2>it kind of causes that whole thing to crumble even more. Okay,
<v Speaker 2>let's you know what, Jie, let's take a break. We're

<v Speaker 2>Mess Mornings. We're back. I'm Jeff Grubb, that's Jana Chow. Well,
<v Speaker 2>let's get back into the headlines. I fix It performs
<v Speaker 2>a full teardown of Nintendo's what it calls piss Poor
<v Speaker 2>pro controller from Ali Reynolds at Nintendo Life.
<v Speaker 1>That's a good, good phrase. Repair firm.
<v Speaker 2>I fix it as performed a full teardown of the
<v Speaker 2>switch to s Pro Controller, delivering a scathing review of
<v Speaker 2>the repair ability and potential durability of the accessory. Ultimately,
<v Speaker 2>it calls the Pro Controller a piss poor excuse for
<v Speaker 2>a controller. But why we'll watching the video reveals just
<v Speaker 2>how tricky it is to actually get into the pro
<v Speaker 2>Controller with Nintendo applying adhesives to the front face plates,
<v Speaker 2>lots of hidden screws and thumb grips that need an
<v Speaker 2>excuse me an uncomfortable amount of force to remove. Essentially,
<v Speaker 2>I fix It believes that the work required to simply
<v Speaker 2>re each the controller's battery for potential replacement is far
<v Speaker 2>too difficult for the average consumer.
<v Speaker 1>That's the one for me.
<v Speaker 2>It's like if it's pissed for in a lot of
<v Speaker 2>other ways, fine, I want to be able to replace
<v Speaker 2>the battery because the batteries on these things last for
<v Speaker 2>you know, single digit years, maybe four to five years
<v Speaker 2>on average, but I've definitely had ones that lasted two
<v Speaker 2>or three and not with a lot, not with a
<v Speaker 2>ton of use either. And by last I mean so
<v Speaker 2>now when I go to like unplug it and use
<v Speaker 2>it wirelessly, it's lasting for like forty five minutes before
<v Speaker 2>it needs to be charged again. And I want to
<v Speaker 2>be able to replace the batteries on these things. It's
<v Speaker 2>one of the reasons I still have a soft spot
<v Speaker 2>for the Xbox style controllers that use the batteries to
<v Speaker 2>double A batteries, because I like to just be able
<v Speaker 2>to swap those in and not worry about the lithium
<v Speaker 2>ion battery and they're going bad and then causing me
<v Speaker 2>a headache. But I also like to have the option.
<v Speaker 2>Sometimes I do like a USB powered battery or you know,
<v Speaker 2>inside of controller, because that's also convenient in its own way,
<v Speaker 2>but I want to be able to replace it. Hearing this,
<v Speaker 2>it's a little frustrating. I think that controller is definitely
<v Speaker 2>better than the Switch one pro controller.
<v Speaker 1>I like the dpad a little bit better, but it
<v Speaker 1>does have some of its own problems.
<v Speaker 2>It's not as bad as the Switch one Launch controller was,
<v Speaker 2>although it's got some similar issues. For the depad specifically,
<v Speaker 2>Are you surprised to hear this because I'm not, because
<v Speaker 2>it's Nintendo. In a lot of ways, it's this is
<v Speaker 2>just them.
<v Speaker 3>I'm not surprised, but I'm still disappointed given that they're
<v Speaker 3>also charging like upwards to eighty dollars er switch uh
<v Speaker 3>A switch to pro controller.
<v Speaker 2>Yeah, I went up like during the terriffs, they even
<v Speaker 2>like raised it another five dollars, right, so yeah, it
<v Speaker 2>was like seventy five and they went up to eighty.
<v Speaker 2>I can't remember exactly, but it's an expensive controller.
<v Speaker 3>Yeah, And Grub a little thing about me. I hate
<v Speaker 3>I hate waste. I like my new apartment building does
<v Speaker 3>it have a compost bin? And it's killing me insides?
<v Speaker 3>But I'm still composting anyway. Yeah, start your own compost heap,
<v Speaker 3>let's do it exactly. And any type of waste, specifically
<v Speaker 3>e waste just brinds my gears. Grub. And for the
<v Speaker 3>fact that a lot some of these controllers just maybe
<v Speaker 3>I feel like today's theme is Nintendo bricking things and
<v Speaker 3>that these may just become plastic bricks in a year's
<v Speaker 3>time is unfortunate. I what happened, Grub, what happened to controllers,
<v Speaker 3>even third party controllers lasting the whole genera console generation?
<v Speaker 3>Because I I know what the answer is, unfortunately, But
<v Speaker 3>like geez, like like you mentioned those three sixty controllers,
<v Speaker 3>those still work, right, Yeah, like they are still completely fine.
<v Speaker 3>Like I remember back when we had an office in SF,
<v Speaker 3>like those were sometimes the most reliable controllers versus even
<v Speaker 3>the wired ones.
<v Speaker 1>Yep.
<v Speaker 2>And of course the thing that we that you know,
<v Speaker 2>the answer to is they want to make money selling controllers.
<v Speaker 2>They get that was a very popular thing in this
<v Speaker 2>last generation accessory sales, especially around like the Fortnite stuff,
<v Speaker 2>where it's like I'm gonna have my own controller for
<v Speaker 2>when I go to play online with the boys, and
<v Speaker 2>I'm gonna get a headset too, and the margins on
<v Speaker 2>those things are huge, so they try to make a
<v Speaker 2>lot of money there. And yeah, apparently the pro controller
<v Speaker 2>for the switch to went from eighty to eighty five
<v Speaker 2>with the tariffs, so that's an almost ninety dollars for
<v Speaker 2>a controller, which is too much. Yeah, I've been taking
<v Speaker 2>apart some electronics recently because I'm losing my mind with
<v Speaker 2>my Steam deck. I'm talking to Valve now they're helping out, thankfully.
<v Speaker 2>But I took that thing apart to reset the cmos
<v Speaker 2>by unconnecting or disconnecting the battery things like that, letting
<v Speaker 2>that sit.
<v Speaker 1>For a while.
<v Speaker 2>And it's very easy to get into that thing, you know,
<v Speaker 2>just a handful.
<v Speaker 1>Of screws and they're hex screws. So security screws.
<v Speaker 2>They're not exactly just the easiest ones to do, but
<v Speaker 2>if you have the right tool, it is very easy.
<v Speaker 2>And I appreciate that. One thing I really like is
<v Speaker 2>there are no adhesives. There's no like for the most part,
<v Speaker 2>at least to get to the battery like and I
<v Speaker 2>really hate like having to like rip, like tear that
<v Speaker 2>adhesive apart and be like, okay, am I gonna have
<v Speaker 2>to reapply this stuff? What does it even do? And
<v Speaker 2>I appreciate engineering that does not rely on that stuff
<v Speaker 2>when building the consumer electronics, so we can't get in
<v Speaker 2>there and not have to deal with that stuff. And
<v Speaker 2>it just seems like Nintendo once again not really caring
<v Speaker 2>about that sort of thing.
<v Speaker 1>You could probably send this into Nintendo and get it fixed.
<v Speaker 2>It will have that with like your battery goes bad
<v Speaker 2>under a certain amount of time. But I'm sure once
<v Speaker 2>you're past the warranty is it's just a cost and
<v Speaker 2>it's always going to be cheaper to do it yourself,
<v Speaker 2>and it should be easy to replace the battery in
<v Speaker 2>something that's kind of like a baseline thing for me.
<v Speaker 3>I'm in front of the show Fosbox like added a
<v Speaker 3>two terabyte hard drive to his two thousand and six MacBook,
<v Speaker 3>and I'm all about that. I just love going being
<v Speaker 3>able to go into something that I bought, even if
<v Speaker 3>it was like however many years ago, and upgrading the
<v Speaker 3>crap out of it, even though it doesn't work. Like
<v Speaker 3>I'd love to be able to go into an old
<v Speaker 3>iPod and just like increased storage bite have seen them out.
<v Speaker 2>Yeah, I done sixteen terabytes and an iPod. Yeah, that
<v Speaker 2>would be a good time.
<v Speaker 1>I've been looking.
<v Speaker 2>I've been checking Facebook Marketplace for a Zoom for forever.
<v Speaker 1>I want to Brown Zoom real bad.
<v Speaker 2>So if anyone let anyone spots one, let me know,
<v Speaker 2>I'm gonna track it down.
<v Speaker 1>All right, let's see, we've got the eye fixes story.
<v Speaker 2>Sakarai, meanwhile, is pouring his heart onto making Kirby Air
<v Speaker 2>Riders and commemorates Iwata's passing.
<v Speaker 1>This is from my Nintendo News.
<v Speaker 2>Nintendo developer massa Hero sakari Is posted a short but
<v Speaker 2>sweet update on Kirby air Riders for the Nintendo Switch to,
<v Speaker 2>saying that he's been pouring his heart into making the
<v Speaker 2>game the very best it can be. In the same message,
<v Speaker 2>mister Sakarai acknowledged the late and great Nintendo president Satoro Iwata,
<v Speaker 2>who sadly passed the way on this day ten years
<v Speaker 2>ago from a battle with cancer. Our thoughts continue to
<v Speaker 2>be with his family, friends, and colleagues. Here's what mister
<v Speaker 2>Sakari had to say to his fans on Twitter. Today
<v Speaker 2>was the Japanese release date of Kirby Air Ride on
<v Speaker 2>the GameCube. It is now on its twenty second anniversary.
<v Speaker 2>At the same time, it is also the anniversary of
<v Speaker 2>Uata's passing in twenty fifteen. Ten years have passed since then.
<v Speaker 2>Wada and I were born about ten years apart in age.
<v Speaker 2>I'll be catching up to him now, catching up in
<v Speaker 2>age now, won't die right now. I'm pouring my heart
<v Speaker 2>into making at Kirby's air Riders. It's shaping up to
<v Speaker 2>be something great. Just nice to hear from SAKRAI always
<v Speaker 2>love when these legendary developers also talk about Awata, because
<v Speaker 2>it seems like they all really loved him. It's just
<v Speaker 2>kind of a special heartwarming thing for me. But I
<v Speaker 2>am at a point jam where I'm getting more excited
<v Speaker 2>about Kirby's air Riders where it's like, oh yeah, I'm
<v Speaker 2>like I keep forgetting about that game. I'm like, let's
<v Speaker 2>do this. That looks like fun.
<v Speaker 3>Yeah, Kirby air Riders as sick as hell.
<v Speaker 1>Let's go saccarai. Uh. Yeah, we should play the game.
<v Speaker 1>We should do that GameCube upf we've been planning for forever.
<v Speaker 1>Use some Kirby aer Ride.
<v Speaker 3>Chibi Robo, maybe the Warrior three D game.
<v Speaker 1>Yeah, there you go.
<v Speaker 3>There's so many, so many gems ooh uh, some of
<v Speaker 3>the Pokemon Stadium games for that, like Gala Darkness that
<v Speaker 3>was supposed to be pretty good. And I guess there's
<v Speaker 3>probably more party games on that, right, Yeah, there are.
<v Speaker 3>There are some more party games, so in that unfortunately.
<v Speaker 2>Although there's also a Warrior where Mega micro Games, which
<v Speaker 2>is a great party game.
<v Speaker 1>So do some of that as well. Yeah, we'll do
<v Speaker 1>some Geist.
<v Speaker 3>Oh for sure. Can we do Odama?
<v Speaker 2>Yeah? Listen, we did Odama that one time. I got
<v Speaker 2>the microphone working so that everyone could shout in at it.
<v Speaker 1>Let's do that again.
<v Speaker 3>Thanks.
<v Speaker 1>It was a great Yeah, exactly, it was a great time.
<v Speaker 2>I was I was controlling using the controller and Mike
<v Speaker 2>and Dan I think we're yelling the commands out to
<v Speaker 2>the mic.
<v Speaker 1>We had it all and so it would work.
<v Speaker 2>So it was a terrible stream actually because it was
<v Speaker 2>just them yelling various Odama commands and that's it for
<v Speaker 2>two hours.
<v Speaker 1>Good time. Yeah, Kirby aer Riders. We don't have a
<v Speaker 1>release date for this still, right.
<v Speaker 2>This is one of those that's just coming out this year,
<v Speaker 2>and so it's like one of those games. It's part
<v Speaker 2>of a list of stuff. It's like Nintendo needs to
<v Speaker 2>update us about that. We mean the Metroid Prime four
<v Speaker 2>release date, We need a handful of other things, you know,
<v Speaker 2>Pokemon's exact release date.
<v Speaker 1>Maybe I don't know. Maybe we did get that one, but.
<v Speaker 2>There's stuff they need to tell us about, which is
<v Speaker 2>why people are like, is there another direct coming or
<v Speaker 2>is all this stuff going to drop in Nintendo today
<v Speaker 2>the app that they put out recently. But one way
<v Speaker 2>or the other, we still got to find out what's
<v Speaker 2>going on with Kirby air Riders. And I think they
<v Speaker 2>probably do that here in September, maybe not even August.
<v Speaker 2>Probably we get the September and they start talking.
<v Speaker 1>About these things.
<v Speaker 2>Yes, Io addresses Hitman switch to performance issues and says
<v Speaker 2>fixes are on the way.
<v Speaker 1>This is from Jordan Midler at vegs.
<v Speaker 2>Io Interactive has addressed the performance issues facing hit Man
<v Speaker 2>World of Assassination on the switch To and told VGC
<v Speaker 2>that fixes are on the way. Hit Man World of
<v Speaker 2>Assassination was a launch title for the switch To. When
<v Speaker 2>the game was released, fans we're quick to point out
<v Speaker 2>some technical issues with the game, such as stuttering, frame
<v Speaker 2>rate dips, and more. Now Io has told journalist Matthew
<v Speaker 2>Reynolds of VGC that the team is working to address
<v Speaker 2>the issues and that an update is coming soon.
<v Speaker 1>So for Hitman, the.
<v Speaker 2>Team is working on some of those performance issues right
<v Speaker 2>now and they are addressing it over the summer, says
<v Speaker 2>franchise director Jonathan les Lacayo. No specific date was given
<v Speaker 2>for the fixes, but Io has said that the experience
<v Speaker 2>of working on hip Man for Nintendo's new system was
<v Speaker 2>a great way to gain experience for the hardware. They're
<v Speaker 2>going to use that for Double seven First Light. I'm
<v Speaker 2>happy to hear this. One of the games I was
<v Speaker 2>excited about to replay on the switch.
<v Speaker 1>To was hit Man.
<v Speaker 2>The performance is just stuttery enough that I'm like, you know,
<v Speaker 2>this runs really well on Steam Deck, and then I
<v Speaker 2>say to myself, wait, why does it run so well
<v Speaker 2>on Steam Deck and kind of crappy here on the
<v Speaker 2>switch too, And it's like, I think it's just optimization
<v Speaker 2>problems the GPU side of things. It's probably just fine
<v Speaker 2>for that game. My guess is it comes down.
<v Speaker 1>To the CPU.
<v Speaker 2>And Hitman's definitely a game with a lot of simulation,
<v Speaker 2>a lot of stuff happening, a lot of clockwork elements.
<v Speaker 2>It probably is pretty hefty on the CPU. So maybe
<v Speaker 2>that maybe that's what's holding it back. And so it
<v Speaker 2>wasn't just this easy turn that thing onto.
<v Speaker 1>The switch to and it'll go.
<v Speaker 2>You will have to kind of figure out some ways
<v Speaker 2>to get it to work with this PS four level
<v Speaker 2>CPU and a GPU that's plenty powerful for your visuals.
<v Speaker 2>I don't know for sure, but that would be my guess.
<v Speaker 2>I'm hoping that this can be a test case to
<v Speaker 2>show that this stuff can just be fixed up and
<v Speaker 2>can run a lot better than the first impressions gave us.
<v Speaker 1>But we'll see.
<v Speaker 2>Overall, though, like you've been playing a lot of switch
<v Speaker 2>To stuff still, Jan, have you been happy with the
<v Speaker 2>performance games overall?
<v Speaker 3>Totally? Yeah, one hundred percent. I think of anything, my
<v Speaker 3>brain has been conditioned to kind of expect not potato quality,
<v Speaker 3>but like bake potato quality on Switch one, certain Switch
<v Speaker 3>one games, and then seeing like, oh, this is a
<v Speaker 3>nice creamy o gratin on the switch too. I've been
<v Speaker 3>pleasantly surprised, but you're right, Hitman was a little bit disappointing,
<v Speaker 3>but I'm happy to see that IOI is like, not,
<v Speaker 3>we're going to fix it, don't worry. And if there's
<v Speaker 3>any studio that I really do trust, it is IOI Minus. Yeah,
<v Speaker 3>they're publishing Wing, Yeah, exactly. Maybe they've learned some lessons there. Also,
<v Speaker 3>I do think that this was probably exactly what they said.
<v Speaker 2>Them figuring things out and learning stuff and mostly applying
<v Speaker 2>that to Double O seven going forward, which is supposed
<v Speaker 2>to come out to the switch to. I would expect
<v Speaker 2>them to now be able to be like, okay, let's
<v Speaker 2>dial things and so the game does just run at
<v Speaker 2>a really steady probably thirty frames per second on the
<v Speaker 2>switch to, and that would be acceptable. One of the
<v Speaker 2>real issues with Hitman is they try to let it
<v Speaker 2>run at sixty and then it dips down like we're
<v Speaker 2>just kind of has this rate the problem where it's
<v Speaker 2>like it's going to go from sixty to thirty constantly
<v Speaker 2>up and down and a lot of places in between,
<v Speaker 2>and that's really noticeable and kind of hard to play with.
<v Speaker 2>And I don't want it to be thirty frames per
<v Speaker 2>second lock because I think the game should be able
<v Speaker 2>to run higher than that. But at the very least,
<v Speaker 2>do something that is going to be more consistent, and
<v Speaker 2>I hope they're able to get there. Final Fantasy sixteen
<v Speaker 2>producer does not rule out that the next mainline game
<v Speaker 2>could be turn based.
<v Speaker 1>Jan This is from Jonas Macki, a Game reactor.
<v Speaker 2>We recently reported that Square Enix was confronted with shareholder
<v Speaker 2>demands during its latest financial presentation to once again focus
<v Speaker 2>on turn based.
<v Speaker 1>Combat That's fun.
<v Speaker 2>This was done alluding to the successive Claire Obscure Expedition
<v Speaker 2>thirty three, as well as the fact that the studio's
<v Speaker 2>last action focused role playing game sold worse than expected.
<v Speaker 2>In an interview with Anime News Network, Final Fantasy sixteen
<v Speaker 2>producer Naoki Yoshida was asked if the net X numbered
<v Speaker 2>Final Fantasy game could be turn based, and it doesn't
<v Speaker 2>seem to be something he's ruling out. On the contrary,
<v Speaker 2>he seemingly leaves it completely open with this question of
<v Speaker 2>turn based versus action, it tends to isolate the gameplay
<v Speaker 2>to just the battle system. That doesn't take into account
<v Speaker 2>what kind of game the creators want to deliver to players,
<v Speaker 2>for example, based on a certain graphical quality we want
<v Speaker 2>to present to our players, or the narrative we want
<v Speaker 2>to deliver to our players. Is it relates to how
<v Speaker 2>we set the games systems around it. This includes the battlesystem,
<v Speaker 2>game design, gameplay feel. It's not a clear cut answer
<v Speaker 2>whether it will become all turn based or if it's
<v Speaker 2>going to become more action based. I'm not necessarily going
<v Speaker 2>to be on Final Fantasy seventeen. So we also don't
<v Speaker 2>want to obstruct or limit our future director or whomever
<v Speaker 2>will be producing the game like seventeen or even eighteen.
<v Speaker 1>We don't want to put them on a rail. Yeah.
<v Speaker 2>I think it should have the option to try to
<v Speaker 2>explore a of a bunch of different stuff, but they
<v Speaker 2>should probably make it turn based.
<v Speaker 3>I don't know, Yeah, I I never know what to
<v Speaker 3>make of these stories grub because, like when they draw
<v Speaker 3>comparisons to Claire Obscure, I feel like it's not just
<v Speaker 3>because it was or is turn based that that game
<v Speaker 3>was such a hit. There were just multiple different factors
<v Speaker 3>going in.
<v Speaker 2>Yes, very true, but turn base clearly didn't hurt it
<v Speaker 2>the way that I think the like there was a
<v Speaker 2>consistus at square inox of like, we are going to
<v Speaker 2>be limiting ourselves if we make it turn based, and
<v Speaker 2>the clarebscur is proving that's not necessarily the case, as
<v Speaker 2>well as balder Skate three and a bunch of others.
<v Speaker 3>Yeah, and then you look at please correct me if
<v Speaker 3>I'm wrong, folks, but Final Fantasy sixteen launched only on
<v Speaker 3>the PlayStation five, correct? And oh yes, so console exclusivity folks,
<v Speaker 3>that is going to hurt your numbers no matter what,
<v Speaker 3>even if the install base is pretty big. So I
<v Speaker 3>think there are several factors in play. That being said,
<v Speaker 3>I don't mind if it were to go back to
<v Speaker 3>turn based or perhaps grub Maybe they could make multiple
<v Speaker 3>Final Fantasy games offshoot games that are turn based, and
<v Speaker 3>they can keep trucking along an experiment with the mainline
<v Speaker 3>games being whatever they wanted wanted to be.
<v Speaker 2>Yep, yeah, you know sixteen did eventually come to PC
<v Speaker 2>and Xbox, but it was like a long road to
<v Speaker 2>get there. And I think the hype around it, the
<v Speaker 2>word of mouth had already sort of turned against it
<v Speaker 2>a little bit by the time it did that, So yeah,
<v Speaker 2>it definitely had an uphill battle when it was available
<v Speaker 2>on more platforms. But yeah, it started off PS five only,
<v Speaker 2>and and so it had that limited install based because
<v Speaker 2>you know, there were quite a few PS fives out there,
<v Speaker 2>but not as many as there were systems for When
<v Speaker 2>like Final Fantasy fifteen launched and did like, sold very
<v Speaker 2>very well, I think that was a multi console release.
<v Speaker 2>But yeah, I just think that they are in a
<v Speaker 2>way where with Final Fantasy the problems are multifaceted. Sure,
<v Speaker 2>it's like, yeah, being exclusive is one problem, but also
<v Speaker 2>I think they aren't making the game that is exciting
<v Speaker 2>their fan base and bringing new people into the genre,
<v Speaker 2>which I think was the idea of let's make it
<v Speaker 2>an action game because we could bring new people in,
<v Speaker 2>and I don't think I don't think too many new
<v Speaker 2>people were actually one over, and some of the older
<v Speaker 2>fan base was a little alienated, and not necessarily because
<v Speaker 2>it's live like action based combat, because they weren't they
<v Speaker 2>didn't think the action based combat did all that much
<v Speaker 2>or was all that enthralling. So maybe there's two options here.
<v Speaker 2>You could go more action based but make it very good,
<v Speaker 2>or you know, make it unique at the very least,
<v Speaker 2>or try to like go back to ground, go turn
<v Speaker 2>based and really go crazy with that and try some
<v Speaker 2>new possibilities in that space.
<v Speaker 1>Or a hybrid. There's a bunch of different stuff you
<v Speaker 1>can do.
<v Speaker 2>You know what, The Final Fantasy seven remake battle system
<v Speaker 2>is fantastic and it's a hybrid. It's got a bunch
<v Speaker 2>of stuff going on. So, like, you know, they do
<v Speaker 2>know how to do cool stuff with with these things.
<v Speaker 2>So this is clearly not the entire problem. But do
<v Speaker 2>you think they need to like try something else than
<v Speaker 2>what they did in sixteen?
<v Speaker 3>For sure, in my I remember enjoying Final Fantasy sixteen
<v Speaker 3>grub but in retrospect, now being removed from from playing
<v Speaker 3>it however many years ago, I think one of the
<v Speaker 3>biggest detriments to that game specifically is that it was
<v Speaker 3>very lacking on the party aspect. Because now I just like,
<v Speaker 3>the only person I really remember, I only really remember
<v Speaker 3>two characters, and that's like Ben Starr because he's Ben Starr,
<v Speaker 3>and then the actor that played Sid because he's like
<v Speaker 3>a prominent actor as well. Like he was in Great Night.
<v Speaker 3>I'm forgetting his I'm blanking out of the guy with
<v Speaker 3>the voice.
<v Speaker 1>Yeah, yeah, I can't do it.
<v Speaker 3>Ralph Ineson, is that right? Yeah? Wow, pull that out, Jeb.
<v Speaker 3>And those are the only two characters I remember, versus
<v Speaker 3>like in Claire Obscure, where I've become like very attached
<v Speaker 3>to every single party member for a variety of reasons.
<v Speaker 3>So again, the Final Fantasy, the next Final Fantasy game
<v Speaker 3>has several problems it needs to address.
<v Speaker 2>Yep, And I you know, I don't envy them having
<v Speaker 2>to figure it out, but I think they've been shown
<v Speaker 2>that there are a lot of ways to figure it out.
<v Speaker 2>You know, Walterskate three is a very different kind of game,
<v Speaker 2>but it does show that there's a lot of siccos
<v Speaker 2>out there that want to get into their bullshit.
<v Speaker 3>Yeah.
<v Speaker 2>And then Claire Obscure Expedition thirty three is also a
<v Speaker 2>different kind of game a little bit, but it's definitely
<v Speaker 2>also trying to be a Final Fantasy game in a
<v Speaker 2>lot of ways. The developers who have straight up admitted that,
<v Speaker 2>and that has worked extremely well, and you know that
<v Speaker 2>that also gets into its bullshit a little bit. But
<v Speaker 2>I think it's just like, no, we're just gonna do
<v Speaker 2>a handful of things. We're gonna do them super well.
<v Speaker 2>We're gonna make sure the acting and is good and
<v Speaker 2>the story is good and that the combat is engaging,
<v Speaker 2>and there's a world that's cool, and it's like, oh yeah,
<v Speaker 2>I think if that's if those are the boxes that
<v Speaker 2>Final Fantasy, well, it will be so far ahead of
<v Speaker 2>where it needs to be. Otherwise, it's like, give the
<v Speaker 2>fan base something on, something to latch onto with the
<v Speaker 2>characters the world, and then give them an engage in
<v Speaker 2>combat system and you're gonna be good.
<v Speaker 3>Yeah. The real reason, though, Grub, and I you know,
<v Speaker 3>I know, I appreciate everyone for dancing around the elephant
<v Speaker 3>in the room here of why maybe Final Fantasy sixteen
<v Speaker 3>did not succeed as well as Square wanted it to
<v Speaker 3>and how much outrage it gave the fans, it's because
<v Speaker 3>they tried to erase history, Grub. They tried to erase
<v Speaker 3>that Donald Duck was one of the most powerful mages
<v Speaker 3>in the Final Fantasy universe by giving Joshua the ability
<v Speaker 3>to do the Zeta flair. Yeah, when really it should
<v Speaker 3>just be held to whoever did it first, and then
<v Speaker 3>Donald Duck.
<v Speaker 1>I didn't know that, and I think you're onto something there.
<v Speaker 2>I did not know that they had a character in
<v Speaker 2>that game do the seta flair And I find that
<v Speaker 2>to be a little offensive.
<v Speaker 1>It's disrespectful to Donald Duck.
<v Speaker 3>Yeah, is Krillin gonna do the spirit bomb and dragon balls?
<v Speaker 2>Yeah? No, don't come on that cheapens it. Don't cheapen
<v Speaker 2>it square exactly.
<v Speaker 3>The command maya means nothing now grub, Yeah, everyone can
<v Speaker 3>do it.
<v Speaker 2>It's like it's like a superkick. Everyone's doing the superkick.
<v Speaker 2>It doesn't mean anything anymore.
<v Speaker 3>Billy Grubb. That is That is spot on, It's what
<v Speaker 3>it is. Yeah, now either.
<v Speaker 2>Yeah, anyone could do it, not a what's the DDT?
<v Speaker 1>Is that the low where you have the headlock?
<v Speaker 3>Yeah?
<v Speaker 2>Yeah that that everyone does a d that used to
<v Speaker 2>be a finisher whatever. New Free Astrobot update adds new
<v Speaker 2>stages and highly requested cameos. This is from Chris Melkin
<v Speaker 2>at Dual Shockers. Today's Free Astrobot update has added some
<v Speaker 2>of the most highly requested cameos the game has seen
<v Speaker 2>so far. I won't spoil any of those because it's
<v Speaker 2>still fairly new. If peop want to go find out
<v Speaker 2>for themselves. Uh, but they have added a handful of
<v Speaker 2>new levels. I think it's five new levels yep, to
<v Speaker 2>the Vicious Void Galaxy, which brings the stage of the
<v Speaker 2>game's total number of stages to ninety.
<v Speaker 1>And then to go along with.
<v Speaker 2>That, there are several bots from several games and the
<v Speaker 2>relatively big names as well. So if you want to
<v Speaker 2>go in there and discover them for yourself, now is
<v Speaker 2>the time to do that. I'm gonna hop back in
<v Speaker 2>it's been a minute I played Astro exciting yep.
<v Speaker 1>I'll maybe do another Astro Open or something like that
<v Speaker 1>I'm looking for.
<v Speaker 2>I don't want to get back into my complete sicko
<v Speaker 2>mode of I'm playing this game for ten hours a
<v Speaker 2>day trying to set one time on one stage. I
<v Speaker 2>just don't have that time in my life anymore. But
<v Speaker 2>I wouldn't mind, like, just hey, let's go do a
<v Speaker 2>raw test of skills in this game at some point.
<v Speaker 2>That's fun in its own way.
<v Speaker 3>Yeah, an exhibition match of sorts.
<v Speaker 1>Exhibition match. Yeah.
<v Speaker 2>Ghost of Yota is getting a limited edition PlayStation five.
<v Speaker 2>This is from Blair Marnell at GameSpot. This is kind
<v Speaker 2>of like small news tidbit that came out of that
<v Speaker 2>Ghost of Yota state of play last night. While the
<v Speaker 2>focus of the event was primarily on the gameplay and story,
<v Speaker 2>there's something special coming for fans of the game now.
<v Speaker 2>So he has unveiled the first look at the Ghost
<v Speaker 2>of Yota Limited Edition PlayStation five bundles. There are two
<v Speaker 2>options for fans, Ghost of the yot Gold Limited Edition
<v Speaker 2>Bundle and Ghost of Yota Black Limited Edition Bundle. A
<v Speaker 2>Black model will be exclusively available through PlayStation's official store,
<v Speaker 2>while the Gold model will be sold everywhere else. Both
<v Speaker 2>bundles include a disk drive, a matching dual Sense controller,
<v Speaker 2>and a digital copy of Ghost of Yota with all
<v Speaker 2>pre order bonuses. If you're watching the video version, you
<v Speaker 2>can kind of check it out there. I think this
<v Speaker 2>is I think it looks nice. I think it looks
<v Speaker 2>pretty cool.
<v Speaker 3>But yeah, is this a pro? No? H? Well, what's
<v Speaker 3>the points?
<v Speaker 1>Yeah? They do this.
<v Speaker 2>They did this with PS four right, where a lot
<v Speaker 2>of the limited editions would be the standard. I mean
<v Speaker 2>the point is the standard sells way better if they
<v Speaker 2>always do, and this one sells really much better.
<v Speaker 1>Yeah, Because if it's a pro, it would have like
<v Speaker 1>the three lines right, and that's just the one line.
<v Speaker 2>Yeah, yeah, the very least, like do it for both
<v Speaker 2>because these are just shells, right, yeah, these are like
<v Speaker 2>it's nothing else is different about them other than the
<v Speaker 2>plastic you're putting on them.
<v Speaker 1>So just do it as a shell.
<v Speaker 3>Yeah. I know that we didn't talk over the state
<v Speaker 3>of play yesterday, Grub, but the fact that they're adding
<v Speaker 3>a low fi Samurai champlu mode is insane. But I
<v Speaker 3>dig it, so I'm all with it. Also fantastic that
<v Speaker 3>Rika Ishi is the main voice actor for this game.
<v Speaker 1>Yep, that's very cool. I like that actor a lot.
<v Speaker 1>She's very, very excellent. So yeah, Otherwise, the game looked
<v Speaker 1>pretty good.
<v Speaker 2>I think it's been the response to everyone is like, hey,
<v Speaker 2>this game looks really solid. Like they've they definitely have
<v Speaker 2>not screwed anything up, but they've they also might be
<v Speaker 2>like sort of taken it to the next level. I
<v Speaker 2>think it's hard to gauge that sort of thing from
<v Speaker 2>one of these state of plays.
<v Speaker 3>I'm gonna put this out into the ether now. I'm
<v Speaker 3>going to janifest this, Grub. We know enough people that
<v Speaker 3>we might be able to convince Erica Ishi to go
<v Speaker 3>onto the dump truck at least that would be fun.
<v Speaker 2>Yeah, that'd be great. I would love to have them.
<v Speaker 2>That'd be excellent. Okay, people, Okay, let's get let's get
<v Speaker 2>get them to work. I'm rubbing my hands.
<v Speaker 3>Together, all right.
<v Speaker 1>Yeah, Ghost is.
<v Speaker 2>Out October second, and uh yeah between that desk Stranding two.
<v Speaker 1>Uh. I guess you know, we have a little bit
<v Speaker 1>of time.
<v Speaker 2>We were talking about this in the BombCast a little
<v Speaker 2>bit or somewhere, you know, two big games from PlayStation
<v Speaker 2>a year these days, it's kind of how it's been
<v Speaker 2>for the last couple of years.
<v Speaker 1>I'm not really I don't think it's much of a complaint.
<v Speaker 2>Because the third party stuff is still there plenty of
<v Speaker 2>indie games to play on a PlayStation.
<v Speaker 3>Uh.
<v Speaker 2>But I do think people were expecting a more frequent
<v Speaker 2>release schedule from play you know. I guess they would
<v Speaker 2>be like, well, we also put out stuff like Concord
<v Speaker 2>last year and things like that, and they're trying that.
<v Speaker 2>But you know, clearly, when we're talking about this, we're
<v Speaker 2>talking about a certain kind of game, and I get
<v Speaker 2>that making that kind of game is not their priority
<v Speaker 2>these days because there's a ceiling on it. But I
<v Speaker 2>do still think people were expecting more from Sony at
<v Speaker 2>this point in the console cycle. Do you feel that way, Oh.
<v Speaker 3>One hundred percent, Grub. I think about like the PS
<v Speaker 3>five games that have have been sticky, I guess is
<v Speaker 3>the word. And I think about Triple A blockbuster single
<v Speaker 3>player experiences from Sony, and their most recent efforts haven't
<v Speaker 3>really grabbed me at all. So I can't imagine that
<v Speaker 3>they've grabbed a bunch of other people, especially if there's
<v Speaker 3>still so many people playing the Call of Duty's, the Pubg's,
<v Speaker 3>the Fortnites on like APS four that they haven't felt
<v Speaker 3>the need to upgrade to PS five. However, many years
<v Speaker 3>in we're in now, Grub, I would have expected several
<v Speaker 3>God of Wars another and charted another last of another,
<v Speaker 3>Ratchet and Clank even bring out my boy Sly.
<v Speaker 1>Yeah, they're definitely wow.
<v Speaker 2>Sucker Punch is the team that makes that, right, They're
<v Speaker 2>definitely not making Sly.
<v Speaker 1>Yeah.
<v Speaker 2>I think my feeling here is like Okay. Then I
<v Speaker 2>looked look ahead and it's like, man, okay. So the
<v Speaker 2>games I'm still looking forward to are mostly Insomniac games,
<v Speaker 2>Venom and Next and Wolverine, and like Venom, we don't
<v Speaker 2>even know I is still happening, although the latest reporting
<v Speaker 2>on that, I guess reporting the rumor mill on that
<v Speaker 2>is that Venom might come out next year and then
<v Speaker 2>Wolverine won't come out till twenty twenty seven, which I mean, okay,
<v Speaker 2>I would be okay with that.
<v Speaker 3>I was.
<v Speaker 2>I really enjoyed playing as Venom in that game, even
<v Speaker 2>though Venom is not one of my most favorite characters.
<v Speaker 2>I still had a good time when Spider Man two
<v Speaker 2>playing has Venom. But boy, that Wolverine game feels like
<v Speaker 2>I should have been here almost by now.
<v Speaker 1>Is it really still two years off? I don't know.
<v Speaker 1>And then beyond that, I don't know. It's like a
<v Speaker 1>lot of.
<v Speaker 2>Big a lot of big first party, the high budget
<v Speaker 2>games that you're talking about there that feel like, okay,
<v Speaker 2>Intergalactic will be here at some point.
<v Speaker 1>What else do they have to go along with that?
<v Speaker 1>And it doesn't seem like a ton.
<v Speaker 2>And that means a lot A lot is writing on
<v Speaker 2>those massive games, which is where Sony doesn't want to be.
<v Speaker 2>They've been there for a while now, they've been trying
<v Speaker 2>to diversify and they haven't been able to figure that out.
<v Speaker 3>I know that I brought up the Last of Us,
<v Speaker 3>but I kind of don't want any more Last of
<v Speaker 3>Us unless it's a new game. Didn't they release a
<v Speaker 3>patch recently that chronological Order or a chronological mode or whatever.
<v Speaker 1>Yes, they released it.
<v Speaker 2>They released Chronological Mode where you can play through the
<v Speaker 2>events of the Last of Us saga and chronological Order.
<v Speaker 1>Which, hey, it's their thing. They could do what they
<v Speaker 1>want with it.
<v Speaker 2>And of course I think it's worth pointing out that,
<v Speaker 2>for one thing, I think that's kind of absurd, kind
<v Speaker 2>of like removes the art of creating a story. But
<v Speaker 2>I will acknowledge this sort of thing is only for
<v Speaker 2>someone who has played through the Last of Us like
<v Speaker 2>five times, and it's like, what, man, would it be
<v Speaker 2>weird to play through it chronologically? And so it's like
<v Speaker 2>I don't want to be too poo pooing on this
<v Speaker 2>because I know who it's for. Like there's some things
<v Speaker 2>I've obsessed over enough to been like maybe what if
<v Speaker 2>I did it chronologically?
<v Speaker 1>It's never the way I would do it the first, Like.
<v Speaker 2>My watch through for anything, I would always do Like
<v Speaker 2>even people recommend here's the chronicle chronological order for like
<v Speaker 2>the Clone Wars or something like that. I'm like, no,
<v Speaker 2>I'm gonna I'm gonna watch everything in release order. That's
<v Speaker 2>the way I prefer to do things. But I could
<v Speaker 2>see someone getting something out of that still another release
<v Speaker 2>of Last of Us, though in some ways they just
<v Speaker 2>go back to that well a lot. All right, I
<v Speaker 2>think that's gonna do it for the headlines. In fact,
<v Speaker 2>it is going to do it for the headlines. Let's
<v Speaker 2>go ahead and get to the poll question from mister yesterday.
<v Speaker 3>There's something funky going on because I posted the Monolith
<v Speaker 3>polly yesterday and it is no longer here.
<v Speaker 1>Yeah, I could have swore I saw you post the poll.
<v Speaker 1>Is it schedule no? Is it archive?
<v Speaker 3>No? All right?
<v Speaker 1>Well shoot, well let's let's run that poll again. What
<v Speaker 1>was it a something about Monolith blah blah blah. Do
<v Speaker 1>you remember what the details about?
<v Speaker 3>Or would you like Monolith Software to make another Zeno Blade?
<v Speaker 2>Yeah, scrub and grubs as they voted in it, like, yeah, okay, weird?
<v Speaker 2>All right, so we'll run that again. Do you want
<v Speaker 2>Monolith sauce next game to be Xeno Blade or something new?
<v Speaker 1>And then we'll do another pull question.
<v Speaker 2>Are you concerned about purchasing use games on your switch
<v Speaker 2>to yes or no, And I'm gonna we're not gonna
<v Speaker 2>explain why you should be concerned, because I want to
<v Speaker 2>just see if anyone is if this is big gun
<v Speaker 2>to filter out, I'm gonna guess not yet, but uh,
<v Speaker 2>we'll see. Okay, we'll get the results of those pull
<v Speaker 2>questions on the show on Monday here on Giant Bomb.
<v Speaker 1>Uh.
<v Speaker 2>Looking forward to that. Getting back into stuff next week
<v Speaker 2>after this weekend.
<v Speaker 3>Uh.
<v Speaker 2>In the meantime, though, speaking to Giant Bomb, what else
<v Speaker 2>do we have going on for.
<v Speaker 1>The rest of it? Today?
<v Speaker 2>We have a upf where we're going to do some
<v Speaker 2>sort of Tony Hawk race. We got to make sure
<v Speaker 2>we get everything set up correctly. The idea, I think
<v Speaker 2>the idea is to like play through Tony Hawk's four
<v Speaker 2>inside of three plus four to see who can get
<v Speaker 2>to the cruise ship the fastest. I'm sorry, three, that's three,
<v Speaker 2>not four. I'm looking forward to it, although I don't
<v Speaker 2>expect to do very well. I'm good quote unquote at
<v Speaker 2>Tony Hawk. That means it like doing tricks and stuff,
<v Speaker 2>not it fine and shit. So we'll see anything else, Jen.
<v Speaker 3>I believe that's it. We somehow, despite being a primarily
<v Speaker 3>five man plus two operation we put out and I'm
<v Speaker 3>seeing a bunch amount of stuff. Please go check out
<v Speaker 3>some of the social clips that Sean has been putting
<v Speaker 3>out out on the socials. Make sure to like them
<v Speaker 3>comment on them. Even because Shawn's been killing it over there.
<v Speaker 3>Chuck is also doing fantastic work on the website. Demo
<v Speaker 3>Derby is coming up this weekend for your viewing pleasure.
<v Speaker 3>Voicemail dump truck yesterday. We did the Jantucky Derby yesterday
<v Speaker 3>as well. It is hilarious. The amount of discourse is
<v Speaker 3>popping up on the subreddit about how upset people are.
<v Speaker 3>Some people are upset about how that was handled.
<v Speaker 1>It was fun.
<v Speaker 2>Well are they upset that we were like kind of
<v Speaker 2>thought that the sexualized girls were sexualized girls?
<v Speaker 1>Is that what they're upset about?
<v Speaker 2>Yeah, you guys, come on, come on, like, look, I
<v Speaker 2>get it's not the horny game, but the whole jabre
<v Speaker 2>just is what it is. Like, they're not old men, right,
<v Speaker 2>they're not. It's not old men that are horse It's
<v Speaker 2>not horsemen. Like, come on, uh whatever.
<v Speaker 3>If people feel a little bit of shame playing uma
<v Speaker 3>musume out in public, that is all that needs to
<v Speaker 3>be said.
<v Speaker 2>Yeah, right, just if you were, like, if your girlfriend
<v Speaker 2>walked in, how would you feel? That's all we're talking about.
<v Speaker 2>And also, I'm not trying to make you feel shame.
<v Speaker 2>You know, loud and proud.
<v Speaker 1>I had janned. I'm proud of you for playing Uma Musume.
<v Speaker 3>All right.
<v Speaker 1>I want you to know I'm proud of anyone out there.
<v Speaker 1>I thank you. Glad to hear it.
<v Speaker 2>All right, we did the poll questions, we said, what's
<v Speaker 2>happening on the website. We'll be back with some new
<v Speaker 2>fun stuff next week. Jam, thank you so much for
<v Speaker 2>hanging out with me today and talk about video games. Man,
<v Speaker 2>I really appreciate it.
<v Speaker 3>What a fun way to end the week.
<v Speaker 2>Yeah, here it is. Thank you everybody for watching and listening.
<v Speaker 2>You're the best audience in gaming. Until next time, have
<v Speaker 2>a good one, take care of yourself and goodbye.
<v Speaker 1>He'll be lacker, don't be bit
