Speaker 2: Welcome to our two of Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage. Now here's Matt Jones.

00:01:05
Speaker 3: All right, welcome back. I remember two Kentucky Sports Radio. If you're just tune in, we did the football thing in the first hour, so you can listen on podcasts. Let's go to the second hour, which is gonna be basketball. Big Blue mad Is Friday Night. I mean, let's just each give our initial takes on it. My first one was was great to have the energy around Big Blue Madness back. It felt like an event that people wanted to be a part of. You know, I drove by there a couple hours before and the line was down the road. I can't remember the last time it's been like that. You have to go back maybe sixteen or seventeen for it to have been like that. I thought the court was cool, but honestly, you know, my favorite parts just from an entertainment standpoint. I thought Kenny Brooks's walkout was really cool. I liked that they did that. I thought he was very smooth, like to like, for five minutes have the camera on you. I think I'd be awkward at some point like wave, but he was just like, I'm the coolest man in the building, and that's just gonna be how it is, right. I love that. I like the interests coming through the crowd. Yes, right, I thought that was a really symbolic and awesome gesture. You know, the production value from on television was left a lot to be desired. Didn't even know who's winning the three point gutten test. But put all that aside. In the arena, the energy seemed great. But it all sort of ends with ruck Patino, right, Like, I mean, ultimately, Rick Bettino stole the show right one way or the other. And whether you think that's good or bad probably depends on whether or not you think it was good or bad that they brought him back. But it was one of those while you almost had to be there moments because I don't think people knew for sure he was coming, and then he shows up and then he speaks, and like it just becomes I mean, he was number three in America on Twitter, like it was a massive thing in the Kentucky Blue gear. I think it's one of those nights like in a few years when we're getting ready for Big Blue Madness and we'll say, what are the biggest things that happened, We'll talk about the John Wall dance, and we'll mention all that you're gonna now also say Patino coming.

00:03:28
Speaker 1: Yeah, the madness had gotten kind of stale the last several years, but that madness Friday Night is one of the best I've ever seen and been a part of. And it was all because of Rick Patino. He made it special. And when he started talking and you could tell he got tears in his eyes, I immediately went back to that feeling we had in the nineties when he came here and he changed Kentucky basketball. And for those of them are around, you don't understand maybe what it was like when he took over and he became this larger than live figure and for him to come on and be humble and be appreciative and be gracious, I thought it was awesome.

00:04:00
Speaker 3: But also for him to get the reaction he did, because that wasn't assured, no, you know, I mean, it wasn't assured that that's what would happen. And it was almost like a great healing.

00:04:10
Speaker 4: And did anybody was there some booing there at all?

00:04:12
Speaker 5: There was a little, but they were drowned out. I mean, a couple around me. I'd barely want to give him credit because they was so loud in there. Being positive you were in the building what do you think. I was someone that didn't want him to do it to just for the spotlight reason. It's like I've said it many times last week, it's like Pope just got here.

00:04:30
Speaker 3: Let him have his moment.

00:04:31
Speaker 5: But I liked how he was a part of something bigger, just kind of in the back of the line. Now he did eventually speak, and he said he wasn't expecting that. But it wasn't like they just tried it out rip Potino and said here he is. He was in a long line of generations of Kentucky players, all holding trophies, and where I was sitting, I could see him in the very back of the tunnel holding that trophy and I could not believe they were going to do it.

00:04:53
Speaker 3: I had about a minute.

00:04:54
Speaker 5: Or two to see him kind of do the slow walk before he got to Everyone could see him, and I figured there would be a positive reception. You kind of got to be a jerk to boom in that scenario, but I did not expect it to.

00:05:03
Speaker 3: Be the roar that it was. You get caught up in the moment. It was a huge pop. It's a moment, and it's definitely a moment, and then you know I love the walking out of players. That gets me every time. First time Cliff Hagen's been backing rough ever and forever, wo escorting Odie Smith's out there. That's a really that's neat to me. And then you know, even like Doron King with his twenty twelve. Nice to see some some some cow guys that are there too with Willie and Deron, he was there. You know that's that That stuff's really cool. I think it matters, and I think the history of Kentucky basketball is why it's Kentucky basketball. So being able to do that, and you know, it's crazy. Rick is back, Like Rick's back. That's crazy.

00:05:54
Speaker 1: Seeing Rick Patino walk out in a blue UK pullover carrying the ninety six trophy and gonna go bunkers just makes me think what kind of world are we living in?

00:06:03
Speaker 3: Rick's back? Like just think about if I had said to you not ten years ago, not five years ago, two years ago. Yeah, Like it's crazy that he's back and that like he's beloved. Okay, so quick backstory Friday, it starts to work out, like we can get him on the show. Okay, talking to parent, who's talking to Macielo. We're talking about how we're gonna do it. We mentioned we might do it at the bar, which would have been a scene, Shannon, if you could have seen the technical difficulties we had. If that had been going on and Rick was coming, forget about it. I'm glad to forget about it. But they had some concerns about getting him in and out of the building because you know, understandably people would have wanted to have their picture, and we our manager was out. We didn't really have a way to do security, and like it was just it was kind of decided it better to do somewhere else. So then we decided to do it at joe Craft Center. Well there's some symbolism there, Like Ryan and I haven't really felt all that comfortable in joe Craft Center since COVID, you know, I mean, not a lot.

00:07:12
Speaker 4: I can tell the stories. I was walking up through the parking lot.

00:07:15
Speaker 1: A lady that works at the UK Athletics looked at me and said, Hey, good to see.

00:07:18
Speaker 4: You guys back around here again.

00:07:21
Speaker 3: It just hasn't happened, has not happened. It just hasn't happened. So then we set up and we set up outside because it's the only place we can get service, and Ryan Shannon is like terrified under the table. He's terrified. You were insanely nervous.

00:07:40
Speaker 4: Why because I wanted this.

00:07:41
Speaker 1: We weren't even doing the interview, no, but I wanted it to go so well. We always have trouble when we're in a building with signal, and we didn't have They didn't have a hardline for us. We were totally up to our sale card. And of course we get in the lobby, Shannon, and we can't get connected. So we had to pull it outside and do it outside on the park on the sidewalk.

00:07:59
Speaker 3: But even during the interview, Shannon, he's like pacing back and forth now that he's.

00:08:04
Speaker 4: That part of it, because I was so worried about how it was going to go.

00:08:06
Speaker 3: So he comes out. You know, there's that moment, Shannon, where you're sitting here looking at a person that you know, I'm the one that made the jokes, right, like the less than fifteen seconds is the one that I tweeted out and to his credit, man for moment one, right, yep, nice, gracious, how you doing, Matt Humble. I'm not sure that i'd ever really met him until that moment because I didn't meet him when he was here. Yeah, he's very appreciative, very said be thank you for doing this. Did he literally said thank you for doing this. She glad to get to do it. We sat and did it the interview. It's their clips all over the internet. You can listen downloaded on podcasts. I think later today Mario will put the whole thing up on video and you can watch it. I thought it went great. I thought he answered the questions, we addressed the fact that there was some awkwardness in doing it. I thought he was honest. I thought it was really really good. And then even while we were doing it, people just gathered there out on the sidewalk kind of wanting to watch that moment, right.

00:09:09
Speaker 1: I think people were walking by like, well, wait a minute, that's Matt Jones and Rick Patino.

00:09:14
Speaker 3: Stop walking on campus. And then there you see that even like Jared Prickett and who else walked out of there. J people haven't like these people walked out of the practice and were like, what is happening? What are they? What is going on? So but I thought it was great and I think that, you know, to use Ryan's phrase, bond that bridge, so to speak, that's exactly what what what happened in the fan base is embrace of him, Drew. I knew they would he'd get more applause, but I didn't know it was gonna be like this. That's what I meant.

00:09:48
Speaker 5: That was a shocking reception that he got in Rupperina, And as you said, I thought it was pretty cool of him.

00:09:53
Speaker 3: And when you mentioned, you know, people were critical, people made jokes, He's glossed over, like, yeah, I get well, he said. I said, did it bother you? And he says something like yes, but I understood, and then which.

00:10:05
Speaker 5: Is a good answer, And I seemed to move right on, and he did like, I'm not here to look backwards.

00:10:10
Speaker 3: I'm here to look forward, and he just wanted to focus on Can we be a little petty here for a second, Let's talk about what the reactions would be for various groups of people. If you're a Louisville fan, Shannon, Yeah, and you see all.

00:10:23
Speaker 2: That, you're rolling your eyes, going, really, dude hasn't been back to Louisville yet. Of course, he says he hasn't been invited.

00:10:30
Speaker 3: And he probably hasn't been invited. Yeah, he clearly has bitterness towards them. He does not the fans. I want to say to the fans, because I know Someonember listening. I don't think he has bitterness to the fan.

00:10:41
Speaker 4: He said that I have nothing in the negative to say against the fans.

00:10:43
Speaker 3: But he certainly has business bitterness to the university, and it it ekes EEPs out of him, right, you can feel it. And he said, we about Kentucky and the other school down the road about Louisville. That's what the football players say in interviews. Louisville man, that's why they talk. Now. Again, I don't think he means the faith. I really don't know.

00:11:09
Speaker 2: He said he loves the fans at Louisville, but it's.

00:11:13
Speaker 3: I think he does feel that way about the university, and you could feel it. Would you be upset? You know? Mark Innis, who's a radio show host in Louisville who has been a friend of mine and who I like, was unbelievably mad and oddly talked about me, which is odd because I kind of always thought we were friendly. What he was very mad. Would you be mad if you were a.

00:11:36
Speaker 1: Louisville fan if he went on the rival school radio show after you won a national championship at our place.

00:11:44
Speaker 4: I think i'd be a little mad.

00:11:46
Speaker 3: Would you be mad? I'd be pretty mad.

00:11:49
Speaker 5: He's like the sadly the most recent positive memory of Louisville basketball, even though it's been quite a bit of time.

00:11:56
Speaker 3: It's like the one thing they can hold on to.

00:11:58
Speaker 5: And then he's wearing a UK blue quartership, a big blue madness, and.

00:12:04
Speaker 3: That it's trash talking. It's just a fact. It's clear he likes us more than he likes them. Yeah, that's gotta be tough. What did he say?

00:12:11
Speaker 5: It might have been in a TV interview where like, when I left Louisville, i'd be knew I'd be sleeping in UK blue again.

00:12:16
Speaker 3: He said to me. I said, did you know you'd come back? No, he said it big blue madness. Yeah, he was like, I knew when I was done at Louisville, I'd go to bed at night in UK blue. Like, that's got to just rip your heart if you're a.

00:12:26
Speaker 4: Louis if you're a little fan, it does.

00:12:28
Speaker 3: Man does alright, So that's one group. What if you're a Saint John's fan and your coach is wearing Kentucky year during the season.

00:12:36
Speaker 2: Probably a little awkward, but I think you're just happy as a Saint John's fan that you have Rick Patino as your coach.

00:12:41
Speaker 3: Totally agree. I don't understand why the Saint john fans like we're not rivals, you know what I mean? Like when Cow was gonna go to Memphis and UMass, we didn't care, right and.

00:12:51
Speaker 2: At the end of the at the end of the day, we know you're still going back to Saint John's. So if you're a Saint John's.

00:12:57
Speaker 3: It's like, yeah, for me, yeah exactly. It's like, what if Pope.

00:13:01
Speaker 4: Went to Big b Yu, Big Blue Madness.

00:13:05
Speaker 3: Bother me at all? Would it bother you?

00:13:08
Speaker 5: I wouldn't say bothered to be like, that's a recruiting event for them, and we're going to have the same players, Like, what are you doing?

00:13:13
Speaker 3: Get back over here? I wouldn't. I wouldn't like after the same players we are they have you.

00:13:18
Speaker 5: I mean, they got a great recruiting class and we're both projected to be five seeds right now.

00:13:23
Speaker 3: I could.

00:13:23
Speaker 1: I could.

00:13:24
Speaker 5: I'm not saying I would, but I could see why how even their administration.

00:13:27
Speaker 3: Would be like, hey, what are you over here? What are you doing? Back? People stop falling for these fake tweets.

00:13:32
Speaker 5: Okay, you fead this weekend, No kidd, I'm shocked you felt.

00:13:37
Speaker 4: Fall for these tweets.

00:13:38
Speaker 3: The tweet where the guy goes Big East Commissioner threatened into fire. Rick Patino like, I want to fall for this stuff. Like what worries me about society is how many people send me stuff that within three seconds I can tell is false, And they're like, what do you think about this that is false? Like how somebody put a tweet about a fake quote? Stoop said, Like Tennessee fans were sharing that everywhere. We're all sharing it. Look, there are people out there who are doing stuff to try to fool you. It is your job as a consumer to list to, like, use your mind. If you don't know who this person is. They don't work for a media outlet you've heard of, and they're putting up a quote. They are making it up and wait for a second person to put it.

00:14:26
Speaker 4: Nobody ever did.

00:14:28
Speaker 3: Including you. Nobody puts it.

00:14:31
Speaker 4: So I see it. I go to his profile. He's verified. He writes for bool you.

00:14:36
Speaker 3: Can bite for eight dollars. Everybody's verified. One's verified. So that's why I must screwed it up. It costs eight dollars to be verified, so it had to be true. I thought, so he has eight dollars, this guy. Yeah.

00:14:51
Speaker 1: So I finally when I open it up and then I see the first response I see as Jack Pilgrim saying, you know, this.

00:14:56
Speaker 3: Is so even it. Jack is even kidding. I know.

00:15:00
Speaker 4: I thought, I realized that, well, this is not real.

00:15:02
Speaker 1: Then ask me about it this morning. I said, I want to be sure. I said, are you sure with this is this real or not?

00:15:09
Speaker 5: He was very I'm really worried about the future of the world.

00:15:16
Speaker 3: I mean the amount of people that just put out things that are obviously false, like video of Trump in the floods in a suit in North Carolina and they're like, look at this man's heart, and you're like, he's what Anyway, I still got one other thing I want to type, but I want to go to the phones too. What do you think of Big Blue Man as? What do you think of Rick's return? Eight five nine two eight oh twenty two eighty seven Cornbread Hemp cornbreadhimp dot com You need to help rest and relax full spectrum flour only Himp CBD thirty percent off with the promo code ks R Blueberry Bash and regular sleeping in his cornbread hip. We'll take a break very back. Okay, is this what we sang to Rick?

00:16:00
Speaker 4: Well?

00:16:01
Speaker 2: Maybe this is what Rick singing does.

00:16:02
Speaker 3: Oh, this is what Rick sing does. Okay, Yes, I'm trying to remember the other words of this song. She's like, though, I'm gonna have to let you go, but I will always love you, and that what Dolly says. Yep sing this Porter Wagner. I think, yeah, all right, quickly before I go to the phones. Draft kings second out of three weeks, PSR parway. That's now second out of three weeks. So if you have been betting with us, you have gotten sixteen to one total winnings. Let's say you bet all seven weeks. If you bet the same amount, you still have nine times your money. So guess what you should be riding with? KSR. New Mexico won easy told you they were. Pitt was a close one that they won. We were all coming down to overtime. LSU old miss the big the big upset, and then LSU gets the win and KSR hits it again.

00:16:53
Speaker 5: You know when LSU went to overtime, I had a tweet typed up you could hedge it if you want to bet on ole miss, you could actually have guarantee need money here, And I had to delete, like, nope, we're riding, We're.

00:17:02
Speaker 3: Riding together, what's overtime. I felt good about it because the whole miss had kind of lost its trailed the whole game. But yeah, big winner. He had great this week. So we had we've we've now twenty on it. Yeah, twenty American dollars. Big money. So a guy somebody had get DraftKings had given a guy like a two hundred and fifty dollars bonus. Bit didn't cost him. I don't know how he got it, didn't cost him money. He bet it.

00:17:23
Speaker 4: Put the whole thing on the parlor.

00:17:24
Speaker 3: Whole thing on the parlor, went over to oh so there you go. All right, let's get started. Tyler's been on for a while because he was the guy who answered in the Football Hour and wants to state, So go ahead.

00:17:34
Speaker 6: Tyler and ironed sixteen minutes. I love this show. I got two things about Rick Bettino. Uh, it's weird seeing him in Kentucky Blue. I've always seen him in Kentucky Red. I'm thirty two years old. I didn't think i'd love him, but I think it's gonna kill me to love him. But I think I'm gonna love him.

00:17:50
Speaker 3: Okay.

00:17:51
Speaker 6: The second thing is it's I think Potino's a pretty punctual guy. I mean, it's weird to hint for him to misspeak about Mark Pope like at or calling him a basketball savant. I know what to serve on is nice?

00:18:05
Speaker 3: I like it. That'll be my whiskey thief call of the day. Well done. He waited an hour and he got a joke that made me laugh. But you appreciate the call. I agree with that. All right, let's go to bluegrass? Bluegrass? What did you think of the other night?

00:18:20
Speaker 7: I'll tell you what first time, long time, let's get that.

00:18:22
Speaker 3: Who are I think?

00:18:24
Speaker 8: What?

00:18:24
Speaker 7: I just I loving the aura like he's making it about the people, and you hear the accent. I am from Exter Kentucky, and we are pretty fond of our basketball this way, and I just love how Pope has made it about the people. It's bb n's team. It's I just love the way he's doing this. And to have Rick come in, I mean, come on, guys, you've got to love that, and I'm fifty so well.

00:18:49
Speaker 3: To your point, where in eastern Kentucky are you from?

00:18:52
Speaker 9: Uh, Floyd King.

00:18:54
Speaker 3: Floyd kN to your point? And this is not I don't think Mark Pope could have the tone of this any better. When I was at the bar Saturday, I got there a couple hours before our pregame show and was just walking around. All anybody wanted to talk to me is how excited they were about basketball? Yeah? I that's I had all these people say, you know, Mad, I haven't really felt the love the last few years. Cannot wait for this year. Now he's got to win. Like if they don't win, that'll go away quickly. But I have to tell you, Bluegrass, I heard the same thing you were talking about. I heard all weekend. The tone. It's like people want this to work so much and they are so excited that Friday night felt like a tent revival to people.

00:19:42
Speaker 7: Oh yes, it was good old fashioned preaching. There's no doubt about that.

00:19:46
Speaker 3: That's right. I appreciate the coll it was.

00:19:48
Speaker 9: I tell you what I did not like.

00:19:50
Speaker 7: I don't like Mark Duke's march and hit happy Bud out there.

00:19:55
Speaker 3: I'm fine with it. I'm fine with it. We need these, we need the I mean, first of all, when he came out, didn't know we were gonna lose. But we need these, We need these programs to work together. Part of why he was there was a symbol of you, Cal didn't want UK football part of it, ever, and UK football didn't want basketball part of it. Usually, this was almost a symbol that that stuff is gone away.

00:20:21
Speaker 7: Is this inn Io gonna be a fifty fifty split and basketball?

00:20:24
Speaker 3: Plat No, because that's no, it's different. It's gonna be it's gonna be more towards football because it has to be. But well, I pray, well, because just you gotta have more players. You need twelve basketball players, you need eighty five football players.

00:20:38
Speaker 7: So but what's ever gonna be nothing other than mediocre in football?

00:20:43
Speaker 4: You know that?

00:20:43
Speaker 7: Well? Would you?

00:20:44
Speaker 3: If we don't have if we don't distribute to Nio, we won't even be mediocre. We'll lose every game by fifty. Then you're making.

00:20:51
Speaker 7: Point that we are basketball.

00:20:53
Speaker 3: No, I'm not. I mean we well, first of all, it depends on what the well, I'm not getting into all that argument. Again. I appreciate the call. I mean I yes, we are our basketball school, but that doesn't mean you try to don't try to win them both. Bruce, what's up, Bruce.

00:21:06
Speaker 9: There's a saying in professional wrestling, we can't hate you till we love you. We can't love you till we hate you. Rick Petino him him coming back. It's like, you know, when he was here in the eighties, Hulk Hogan era, you had the Yellow and Red running wild, slamming giants, winning titles. He leaves, goes to w CW, puts on the black and white. Then he comes back. Now he's got a Legends deal back into Yellow and Red. Everybody wants to go to Comic conn and scene. That's Rick Petino summed up. He's haul Kogan's character arc.

00:21:38
Speaker 3: That's a lot of truth to that. There's a lot of truth to that. I appreciate the call, like to use the Hogan rock analogy. You know, people got sick of Hogan. He goes to w CW. He's a bad guy. Everybody mocks Hogan, everybody makes jokes. Hogan's the bad old days of wrestling. The modern wrestling is the rock laying at the smack it down. John cal Perry won and done, and then at two thousand and two WrestleMania, Hogan walks in and it just flips, and the crowd decides they love nostalgia over the rock, and now Hogan's more popular. I mean the Hogan rock that's col Rick. They flipped. Yeah, almost in the middle of a match. One year ago, Cal had brought in this reed Shepherd, Rob Dillingham, Antonio Reeves, Rick, ha, You're at Saint John's. And a year later Rick's and Blue in red Yes dun dun dun Dun Dun dun d and Rick's like, I always look you anyway. I never wanted to be in w c W. It's He's right, Shannon, Am I wrong? You're right?

00:22:50
Speaker 4: I like it. What's old is new again?

00:22:52
Speaker 3: You know what's old is new again? That famous two thousand and two WrestleMania rocking Hogan are staring at each other, and all of a sudden, the crowd goes going from Rocky Rocky. They start going ho again, Ho again, and Rocky's looking around. What that's what happened with Cal? He was in Hot Springs. Go look at those pictures. We gotta talk about that.

00:23:13
Speaker 2: I don't want to see Rick and tights.

00:23:14
Speaker 3: Though, are you saying you wish you ripped his shirt off? What if he had? Oh my, what if he had and he had gotten the Louisville tating God, remember to the Calvin and Hobbes pain on im and it huts inside. TJ. Smith, personal injury attorney, called TJ. He'll make them pay.

00:23:36
Speaker 2: Now more of Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage.

00:23:39
Speaker 4: Here's Matt Jones.

00:23:40
Speaker 3: So yeah, here comes Rick. He takes his hand on the crowd's going crazy. He and Richie Farmer flexing.

00:23:48
Speaker 2: Let me tell you something mean, let me tell you some brother John Callapey.

00:23:55
Speaker 3: He's going to get his buck kicked in VIXI. I'm a real Kentuckian. What you're gonna do? What you're going to do? Pat Kelsey when the Big Blue runs wild on you? All right? I'm sorry people don't know wrestling or not enjoying this. Yeah, uh well, I mean he was at the President, he was at the Camp convention. So yeah, I guess a lot of people do. All right, real quick, you think col watched it? Oh? Absolutely?

00:24:35
Speaker 1: Like you and I were just saying there was coincidental tweet like right at six thirty.

00:24:40
Speaker 5: He tweeted about Arkansas fans camping out at six thirty.

00:24:43
Speaker 3: Then they went back home because the crowd for his version of madness. First of all, on some level, cows. I gotta be lot. He's gotta be like, what did I do? Right? What did I do? Rick? Is written? And you gotta understand Cow and Rick hate each other like they hate each other. I don't care what either. They can all say whatever they want. They hate each other. I have friends that are very close to Rick. There was a time I was close to Cal. They hate each other and if they say something else, they're just lying. Okay they are. They hate each other. So the fact that it has to eat at Cow that Rick is at that event, of course it does. Then he is in Hot Springs and Pine Bluff, Arkansas in half empty crowds. I mean those crowds are sad. Yes, I didn't want to listen to Arkansas fans, so I didn't tweet the pictures, but you can find them. It is sad how many people were there. And he's got to be like, I am in Pine Bluff? What am I doing?

00:25:45
Speaker 1: And Ruparita is packed and going bonkers for Rick Patino.

00:25:50
Speaker 3: It's it's it's, it's it is. I can't even think of an analogy that makes like that would be like this. It really is bizarre world though.

00:25:59
Speaker 2: I mean just a couple of years ago, and if I laid out the scenario for you, you'd be like, there's.

00:26:04
Speaker 3: This happen and he has to live. I mean true, there's a part of me that I even gotta feel sorry for him, Like it's gotta be just when Rick walks out there, he's got to be like, are you serious?

00:26:18
Speaker 5: And adding just to what they're going through, and Cal's long tweet he sent out as madness was starting, it says, lastly, I'm holding out a couple of players for precautionary reasons.

00:26:28
Speaker 3: Everybody the ankle guy stood out to me. I was like, oh, they got to go guys in a boot shain, and I think we can officially give up on the ankle guy. Any followed Red he's in the NBA. Now you're the one wave in the anlag and said the ankle guy, I think we just gotta give you. Got to get rid of the ankle guys. Not a thing ankle guys in Houston.

00:26:52
Speaker 5: He had a choice to follow Cal or follow reach Shepherd, what would you have done in that situation?

00:26:59
Speaker 3: It was up Let's go to Mark. Hello, Hey, yees still here, Rick Potato.

00:27:09
Speaker 10: I think if you set the basketball party side, it was full worthy for him to be there because that was his student. And yes, that's true, that's achieve a major achievement in his life.

00:27:21
Speaker 3: It's a great point.

00:27:22
Speaker 10: I think it was fully in order.

00:27:26
Speaker 3: Do you have kids? Do you have kids, sir? Because I mean I don't. Do you have kids?

00:27:31
Speaker 10: Yes?

00:27:32
Speaker 3: Okay? So my mom always says, and you can see if you that like, and I believe her. She has more pride when I do stuff than when she did it herself. In some ways, Are you like that with your kids? Yes? I would be that way, and I think that in some ways Rick's got to be like that a little bit right, and that like his student has now taken that job.

00:27:54
Speaker 1: And that's why he wanted to be there to help Mark Pope h captain of the ninety six championship team, his team usher in this new era. He wanted to do that because he was Pope is one of his own.

00:28:04
Speaker 3: Yes, yes, go ahead, sir, agreed.

00:28:06
Speaker 11: Uh.

00:28:07
Speaker 10: Secondly, I don't think Rick Patino will ever, ever ever shy away from a camera and a microphone.

00:28:13
Speaker 3: Well, that's true. I mean he's not. He's not a wilting flower or anything. He's gonna be. He's gonna be. The interview was.

00:28:19
Speaker 10: Great, I thought, and uh and that went well. Next item, uh has as mark Pope building an up in his savings account so that when late February early March comes around and we lose a game that we shouldn't, that we won't withdraw all the savings.

00:28:36
Speaker 3: I think. So I appreciate the call. I mean, look, I for me, I'll just say for me, he gets somewhat of a pass. This year he had to build a roster from scratch. I have always believed that when Cal left, the next year's team would be awful. So if the team is not awful and it's competitive, that to me is a win. I think they need to make the tournament. I think people get worried if they don't make the tournament. I think people get worried if they're not competitive. I don't think that will be the case, but I do think people are going to give Pope a leash, do you.

00:29:13
Speaker 5: Oh, definitely certainly gotta make the tournam if you don't make tournament, that's different conversation. But you know went ohing to in both tournaments last year. Not a very high floor. He's matching there. I agree with you on throwing things together on the fly, and I think people forget in the middle of building that roster, he was doing that without its assistance. He was also a recruiting assistance while recruiting players. So whatever you think of this team, and I think he did pretty well. That was a pretty big task that.

00:29:38
Speaker 3: He did in a month.

00:29:39
Speaker 5: I mean there was that day he had six commendments in six days. This is a pretty good product. He's gonna roll out.

00:29:44
Speaker 3: Give me recumstances. He doesn't have one player that was on the team last twelve now he had to completely build a new roster from scratch.

00:29:51
Speaker 4: We all good.

00:29:51
Speaker 1: No, this is not probably a Final four team, But I answer your question, I think it's a very competitive team. They're still going to win a lot of games and get this exciting. But like Drew said, you can't go one and done in March.

00:30:02
Speaker 3: You can't. Well, I don't know if I agree with that. He can't. I mean, first of all, when you say he can't, if he does, people will still support him and be ready for next year.

00:30:15
Speaker 4: They'll be mad, but yeah, they'll support him.

00:30:17
Speaker 3: We'll see. I think a lot of it depends. Are you a seven seed and you play a ten seed? Are you or are you a three and you lose to a fourteen? Those are different loss true, you know, so so we'll see. Let's go to Ryan. What's up, Ryan, Matt you're there?

00:30:32
Speaker 11: Yes, So between the wrestling talk and Ryan believe in that tweet it's got your beef and smirched voice really fired up here.

00:30:40
Speaker 3: Oh yeah that stopped? Oh will you stop? That's gorilla monsoom. Yeah, but will you stop? Go ahead?

00:30:49
Speaker 11: So two things about Patino. I loved him being there at midnight madness. But it's February. First, the clocks at about a minute before tip off and coaches come out. Du does Patino come out and set behind Kentucky's bench for the Kentucky Arkansas game?

00:31:05
Speaker 3: And yeah, he can't do that. I mean, I'm sure he plays that day. But also I do think I appreciate the call. That's where Saint John's administration would be like, no, you cannot go during conference play to one of their games. So no, I don't think that will happen.

00:31:20
Speaker 1: No, then you asked Patino himself for an interview about we'll set up a series with Saint John's.

00:31:25
Speaker 4: I mean, that's that's coming.

00:31:26
Speaker 3: On the idea that we play Saint John's and it's at RUP and the other game is at Arthur ash Stadium at the US Open. Awesome. That would be awesome. I mean, Drew and I have been there, like, what a what a perfect setting. I know you have to it has a roof now, so you could you wouldn't have to worry about the elements.

00:31:47
Speaker 4: And Patino said to you, I can get that.

00:31:49
Speaker 3: He looked at and he goes, I can get that done. Well, I believe it. The worry is UK can't play another road game with the commitments. But like Dru, that would be awesome, amazing.

00:32:00
Speaker 5: I'm miss taking that seven train out there every day to go to Queen's Flushing, Flushing.

00:32:06
Speaker 3: Yeah.

00:32:06
Speaker 5: Uh, Patino plays in Madison Square Garden the day of UK Arkansas.

00:32:10
Speaker 3: It is a noon. I mean he could maybe put us. He's pretty busy that day. Even I would be like Rick, I don't think he plays prominence. I don't think that's a good idea. Dan, go ahead, Dan.

00:32:22
Speaker 8: Hey man, I want to give you a little bit different perspective on Patino's return. I first want to say I did not see Big Blue Madness, but I did listen to your your interview with coach Patino, and I thought it was very professional, probably more more courteous and polite than he really sort of deserved.

00:32:42
Speaker 4: But I thought you did a great job. You think I think.

00:32:46
Speaker 8: I think Patino's primary purpose may be a little bit different in his return, and I think it's because he wants to stick at to Louisville.

00:32:55
Speaker 3: Uh.

00:32:56
Speaker 8: He's made it clear that he expects Louisville to even though he says they had the right to fire him. He's made it clear that he wants an apology in the manner in which they have fired him, which is totally ridiculous. He deserves no apologies for them, but they made it clear they're not gonna give him one. So I think this was the perfect opportunity for him to say, I don't need your love, Louisville.

00:33:17
Speaker 4: I got plenty of love, right.

00:33:18
Speaker 3: I think there's a lot of truth to that. I do. I think there's a lot of truth to that, and there's a little bit of sticking it to Cow, and there's a little bit of that, and I think he also loves the place. You know, all those things can be true, you know what I mean, Like, all those things can be true.

00:33:30
Speaker 8: I think he definitely loves Kentucky. But yeah, this was a perfect opportunity for him to say, I don't need you, U l I don't need you, And they made it clear they're not gonna apologize, so anyway, I.

00:33:41
Speaker 3: Just know, I think that's listen. I think that's a fair perspective, and I'm sure I appreciate the call that that is a part of it he gets to. I mean, that's why it's a perfect night shading for Rick. He got to do all that. He got to make Louisville fans mad or not fans. I don't think he wants to make the fans, but he got to make Louisville as an institute mad. He got to make Cow mad. Ain't He got to return where he's wanted to be for thirty years.

00:34:04
Speaker 2: He said, this was one of my bake, one of the greatest days of his nfeest nights that he's had in.

00:34:09
Speaker 9: A long time.

00:34:10
Speaker 3: I mean, that's that's what those are pretty big words. Hey, it's promises to be a month of tricks, treats and touchdowns. Draft Kings sports Book is the official betting part of the NFL. 00:34:50
Speaker 11: Uh?

00:34:50
Speaker 4: Peaches in herb?

00:34:51
Speaker 3: Peaches in herb. I think I told you this once when I clerked on the DC circuit, herb was the was the security guard?

00:35:02
Speaker 11: What?

00:35:02
Speaker 3: Yeah?

00:35:03
Speaker 4: Really?

00:35:04
Speaker 3: So when it clerked on the DC security guard, I didn't know who Peaches and Herb were. And one day somebody was like, you know, that's Herb from Peaches in Herb, And I was like because I liked him. He was very like funny, and he'd every day like say something because I only had two suits, and he'd be like number two today because he knew that. And but yeah, he was Herb from Peaches in her.

00:35:28
Speaker 4: Oh, this was a big slow dance song back in my high school days.

00:35:31
Speaker 3: Yeah, eight five nine two eight oh twenty two eighty seven. Text machine seven seven two seven seven four five two five four what person, writes Matt, So, bottom line, do we make the tournament? Well, so a lot of preseason polls have come out. Kim Palm has his forty second, CBS has his twenty fifth, Andy Katz has his fourteenth, and that kind of is sort of symbolic to me about like it could be anywhere.

00:35:58
Speaker 5: ESPN's twenty three twenty three ape pole comes out today at noon, does it?

00:36:02
Speaker 3: I mean, I think we'll probably be right at the bottom of the top twenty five, but like I could see anywhere. So I told you I went and looked at the top teams and the top seven or eight are pretty good, and then I think it takes a drop, so I think you could put us anywhere starting about number nine to about forty. Yeah, and I don't know where we'll be in that.

00:36:23
Speaker 1: There's like four or five really good teams in the SEC alone this year.

00:36:27
Speaker 3: Alabama's really good, Kansas is really good. Gonzaga it's good. Duke whom I missing, Rutgers. Rutgers Ruggers has two of the top three freshmen in the country. Wow, Ruggers has two projected top ten picks. And I think another guy Houston and Yukon Houston. Houston I think is going to be Houston was Kim Pom preseason number one. Danny Hurley basically said, I don't know why you all have us in the top three. About Yukon, he was like he basically was worn and we ain't what we were in the last couple of years. I hope people know that, he goes, I think we can be that March, but like he was kind of warning, like, don't everybody expect us to be great, but you're gonna have them because they're back to back. Gonzaga, I have a lot of people back. Yeah, we said this the other day.

00:37:13
Speaker 5: The SEC has so many players back that we're gonna recognize.

00:37:17
Speaker 3: Has a ton of teams that like the sec top to bottom is gonna be really really good. Who's let's go to Lucas. Lucas, Yo, go first, A long time man? Who are what's up? Thank you?

00:37:34
Speaker 12: Yeah? So, I just want to touch on a couple of things. We've been going to Madness. Well I haven't gone in a few years, but we used to camp out, do the whole shebang all the way back to Tinos last couple of years at UK, and you know, I, along with probably many other people, were heartbroken when he left and then he ended up at Louisville and stuff. But I truly believe that if he could have gone to UK instead of Louisville coming back out of Boston, he would have. But that wasn't an option.

00:38:05
Speaker 3: For sure. He wanted to.

00:38:07
Speaker 12: Yeah, I mean, he wanted to be in the heartland. He missed the Bluegrass state, and he got as close as he possibly could. And you know, I think, you know, we welcome him back with open arms. He made a mistake and that's forgiven.

00:38:19
Speaker 4: He did.

00:38:19
Speaker 12: He did what he had to do, and I got goosebumps. Basically, did you so.

00:38:26
Speaker 3: You said you hadn't been to Madness in the last few years. But do you were determined? You like, Okay, I definitely want to be there this time, right, Yeah? And did you feel like it was worth it? Oh?

00:38:37
Speaker 12: Absolutely, man, I mean it was. I'm trying to think what to compare it to you, really, I mean maybe the National championship year of twenty twelve. I mean it was. It was a bigger event than anyone really anticipated us.

00:38:52
Speaker 3: I think that's right. I actually do think that's right. I think it ended up a much bigger event than people thought. Yeah, I appreciate to call it. Drew. You stood outside the gym when it was over and did your KSR rapid reaction? What was it like when the fans were walking out?

00:39:05
Speaker 5: Oh that was so fun. We normally those take like ten to fifteen minutes. We did thirty something because there's so many fans out there just wanted to talk, not just with us. They're just out there congregating, having so much fun. We talked to some younger fans who have no Rick Patino memories at all, only know them as the Louisville coach. But they were like, because everyone else was cheering, we're standing up cheering too, because it just felt like the thing to do so, even the generation didn't have the nostalgia's welcoming rick Back.

00:39:29
Speaker 3: I could tell the vibes were good because the bar was full afterwards. I think people just didn't want the night to end, you know what I mean, they wanted to be in the UK.

00:39:38
Speaker 1: And then, you know, a couple things like during the Big Math maybe special the two Kentucky kids end up in the three point finals, you know that was something. Yeah, and Colin Chandler had a Pope jersey on to win the Slam Dunk Contest.

00:39:48
Speaker 4: You know, just the little things like that.

00:39:49
Speaker 5: It's one thing we need to accept they are and I say this would love We're corny, We're I mean we had a macarena. Yeah, it was going to be a little funny. That's his personality. I don't know if we need to keep doing dunk contests anymore, if we participants, it's just Channon.

00:40:05
Speaker 3: I do have to ask you. Yeah, because you go on record with these pro or con the Lamont Butler rap, the idea of it was cool.

00:40:16
Speaker 2: I don't know that he was actually live rapping.

00:40:19
Speaker 3: He was definitely lipsych yes, okay.

00:40:21
Speaker 2: Yeah, because nobody else really addressed that. I thought Okay, he's got to be lipsticking because it's not.

00:40:26
Speaker 3: The words aren't. But you hate when these guys do songs like that's been a thing of yours forever, even going all the way back to teach me about Kentucky.

00:40:33
Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, it was much better than teaching me about Kentuck.

00:40:36
Speaker 3: So you put it ahead and teach me about Kentucky. Oh yeah, one hundred. It's pretty good. He had some good lines. The lines are very good. The lines are good if you actually read what he says. I mean, I gave one on the pregame show. People didn't seem as impressed as me. Channon. He said something like, he said something like when we go to the bar, the girls be like hikr, like he walking up a mountain? What about? Why is that not good? Hikerk? I get it, Hiker, I think is that not a good line? Mario se don't listen to them? I wrote, we young people, we know what I wrote down my three favorites ahead.

00:41:15
Speaker 5: How about uh might pull up to Harlan if Trent Noah guy.

00:41:20
Speaker 3: Again good rap and punny hiker Noah guy. I give me another one.

00:41:26
Speaker 5: I didn't mean to interrupt, like Kentucky fans.

00:41:31
Speaker 3: He's both rapping and pney. I want to put banners up there while I'm away, like Otega's name Otegoway. You know he did everything great, right, look the song again.

00:41:44
Speaker 2: I said it was bad jokesones.

00:41:47
Speaker 3: But by the way, we are cordy because even he rapped about paying taxes, and they say they Robin's son on some Jackson things. They're robbin the Robin out. Look at that. Look at those all the bars, those bars, those are bars.

00:42:06
Speaker 1: The only other one I've heard like this is when Shigar he made one of all the players.

00:42:09
Speaker 3: Don't talk about Cigar. That's not the same.

00:42:11
Speaker 1: But here's one line was I remember, nobody works harder or smarter than Jared Carter.

00:42:16
Speaker 3: See this is better than nobody smarter, whole team full of shooters like the rifle team. I like that one to shout out the other sports. So good. Court physical therapy. These jokes are so good. I have to go get therapy court ko rt dot com. Uh, if you are in pain, who knows. Maybe when this is over with the wrists, maybe I'll have to do a little court physical. You may need some re rt dot com seventy locations, one near you you know all insure it's taken, don't need a doctor's referval. It's court sighting weekend, bad weekend, best of times, worst of times, But thanks for listening. This has been ks R
