Speaker 2: Aerocrats. Connor Griffin to the show, he learned everything in one week in Triple A. This is awesome. First of all for Tigers fans. He's nineteen years old. He's going to make his debut in the home opener. How convenient against the Orioles. And according to Jason Mackie, who covers the team, he said the move was made for baseball reasons and because he's their best option. Joe Sherman tweeted about this and essentially said the same thing, where they wanted to see if he would win the job in spring, then he faded a little bit late. So Ken also commented on how he heard from team reps. I'm paraphrasing, but that you know, they wanted him to get a little confidence boost and he did hit the crap out of the ball in Triple A for a week. Here he comes. So let's cover the good stuff first. How much does this impact the Pirates? They were not getting much shortstop production from primarily gied Triolo, and their position as a whole right now again in a week was like two hundred. I know we're going to play the small sample size game, but shouldn't this kid just be here from the jump, helping this team try to make the playoffs for the first time in a decade.

Speaker 1: I think it matters what your nine best players look like. I think Jared Triolo at third base is gold. I think him its third and second base. He has a utility gold glove for that. So to me, throwing him at shortstop might be undervaluing what you're getting out of shortstop. Connor Griffin. He could come up to the big leagues and struggle. We're not even talking about his hitting. We're talking about what he adds to this team, what he adds to the future of this team. Maybe his first fifty at bats don't go well, but now the rest of the team is starting to get the rhythm of what it's like to have him in the lineup, the fanfare out there around him. To me, I don't think it's going to be a struggle. I think he's going to acclimate very well to the big leagues. And I think this was a decision that they made his five games. His five games in TRIPLEA did not make them say cow, he really did this, Like, hey, he killed it down there, But what happens if he had hit one hundred? But they had said, you know, he's not ready yet. No, it's a first day, it's the first home it's a home opener. They're ready to sell some tickets and get some fans excited in the seats.

Maybe I'm overplaying it, But my point AJ is, here's what's here's what's really gonna happen. AJ. Friday home opener gonna be awesome. And and then on Friday night or Saturday, they will announce the extension. You can't announce it and have it official before that. Since there's a PPI. That's the extra pick you get if the player wins rookie the year, or if the player wins MVP within the first three years or what is it top three MVP? Yes, three or top three yeah, so three years that would enable him to give the Pirates an extra pick. They messed that up with Paul Skens. They called him up too late. So to me, this is awesome. Should have happened a week ago. The timing is all very convenient for keeping a player down until he agrees to a contract extension.

They'll give it four or five days because they don't want to make it that obvious that he's getting called up because they're close to an extension, or he's going to agree to EXTENSI because if they do it the day over the next day, people say, hm, that's strange. If only shows like foul Territory said he would assign the extension spring training, he'd already be up. So I think that he's up and they can say it is for baseball reasons. Listen, Triolo struggled. We said he was going to struggle a shortstop. We all know he can't play short stop every day. The Pirates have figured that out so now, but they knew that in spring training. This was just to put Listen. I hate to say this because it just it stinks that we even have to talk about this, But they did this to make Connor Griffin see, hey, if you signed this extension, you could be in the big leagues. And boom here he isn't on the home opener. You think he's not going to sell a few more tickets on the home opener. I don't know if they were sold out already, but they're gonna be now, right, They're gonna be now. And if you would have if you would have came up the first day of the season.

Everyone has had struggles, right want Soto when he came up, he had some struggles. Bryce Harper had some struggles, Mac Trout. They had some struggles. But you learn at the big league level and then you're better off in the long run for it. So I thought he should have been here from opening day. I'm glad they're finally making this decision after five whole games. Man, he went down to Triple A and did well, So man, now he's up, Like, come on, are you kidding? Those five games didn't mean anything other than I don't even know why they did that. They should have just had him in the big leagues for opening day. They didn't, And but now here he is, and hopefully he has a great career.

Speaker 1: I'm gonna say, and this is this is tough for me because ever since this news came out, AJ was the first one to text us about it, and so I started thinking, I'm like, what if I ran the pirates? What is the what is the issue of not doing it this way? Like if I call him up, if I call him up one opening day, because they clearly think he's ready. He didn't change anything in Triple A to say, wow, he really changed our mind in those five games, so they knew he was ready. But everybody would do this once a week on the show. AJ's pining for somebody to pay for his meal. Oh and I see you're gonna pay for my meal. The pirates are looking to get the most, extract the most value out of this player, and to me calling him up on opening day, having him sign an extension that is, you know, the value that he wanted on before opening day, and then not getting a PPI pick, not getting you know, he opens on the road. All the things that the pirates are doing to me. The pirates show me by doing this that they're like, eh, it's okay if we miss the playoffs by one game, but financially they're like, yeah, we're just we're just trying to extract the most value out of this, out of this situation as possible.

And I think the Pirates use their leverage to say you could get called, you could make the opening day roster, and but you have to take X amount of dollars. He says no. Maybe maybe his agent found out that the cold Emerson thing was possibly happening, and there's you know, there's conversations. It's not like all of a sudden, Oh, cold Emerson's getting ninety million and the Pirates only offered me one hundred and one million. Industry knows I'm better than him, so we're gonna go and say no, no, Like there's everybody knows what the value of the player is. The team tries to keep it as low as possible, and the player tries to get it as high as possible.

Sure the past plays into that, but the future projection for Connor Griffin, when you're looking at how the industry weighs a player like this is the highest in baseball for a prospect, for a prospect in the sport is the highest projection. If that's how we're basing things in the sport, then he should be the highest paid pre debut player and he should probably get a comp that's really similar to any player that's what below one season, one year of service time.

Right is lats of guys in earlier, the better you take on risk that if the player doesn't pan out, he did make a lot of money, but more likely than not these turn into bargains for the team based on market value of a player. I'm with you, I want to make sure we have that positive vibe for Pirates fans. They've gone through a lot for the past decade, a lot, a lot of nothing for the most part, so this is a really exciting time. I also want to give a little bit of love to Ben Charrington's group KRATS. Tanking is not what it used to be. We had a time period where if you're the worst team, you get the top pick. The Pirates were a little bit of part of that, but then through the last CBA it made it more difficult with lotteries and a few tweaks to not make it so obvious that you can tank and then get a ton of great players from the top of the draft. The Pirates have been bad for a while they've had many opportunities lately, they've been seizing them. So Ben Charrington's group, whoever he's got under him specifically, I don't have the names in front of me, but they know who they are drafting, developing. They've done a really nice job. We're talking about a number of homegrown players schemes you might want to put in a different category. He seemed obvious. Fine, but Connor Griffin, Bubba Chandler, guys like that that we are giving credit to have been. I would say, huge success stories for this team, and that's how you need to create a winner in Pittsburgh.

You can't To me, I think where the Pirates have to do well is where they say, okay, we do a pre draft deal wherever their first pick is, and it's maybe lower than market value for that first pick, so that then they can maybe possibly hit on giving a guy overslot in the other rounds. And that's where the Pirates can find value. Obviously, if people want to say, yeah, they created Paul Skins, I don't know. I mean, I kind of I have a tough time. I have a tough time getting on board with that. But to me, I think it's where they find that extra value. How do they handle how do they handle Bubba Chandler when he first gets to the big leagues? Okay, they put him in the bullpen. Okay, that's kind of weird, like he's never thrown out of the bullpen, but you do that. How do you handle this Connor Griffin's situation. I think while we would have liked to have seen him on Opening Day, you know what, they were trying to get the most value out of this situation, so they did what's best for the organization moving forward, even if it means he misses the first six games.

I remember Schnee making throws, throwing errors in back to back games in twenty twenty four in both Jose and Jimenez talking about Andres and Jose Ramirez patted him on the butt and picked him up at their meeting on the mound. Yes, he called him out, and then they talked about it after the game, like there's still teammates if he has to hold that against Chapman and he's like, oh, that dude, he called me out. That is bool. I can't believe he would have done that. They would have. They didn't have a chat anyway.

Matt Chapman has been diagnosed with Tourette syndrome since he's seven years old. He was made fun of and bullied when he was younger, so I don't want to use that to blame. But also on top of that, you're going to have some people that are picking on someone who has been diagnosed with turets for the past thirtieth years of his life.
