We did a podcast on late Wednesday night, we recorded after that Met series and we said we'll see it. We will see you on Monday. And then Kyle sh Warbers, we had him. Yeah, this is a game of adjustments Roubn as you know, so the Philly Show is making an adjustment. Oh my gosh, what a what a game by Kyle Schwarber, four home runs tying a major league Let's talk all about it with the Parks First Pitch. He's over twenty and then a few hours later he became the twenty first player in major League Baseball history to hit four home runs in a game, and so much fun stuff came out of last night, Thursday Night's game in terms of the history aspect of it. You look at the list of the guy the first twenty guys that did it. You got people on there named Mike Schmidt, Willie Mays, Gil Hodges, Lou Garrigg, and then you have Mark Witten, Nick Kurtz, who just did it last month with the A's Scooter. Is it Jeanette, I can't remember how to pronounced yeah, Jeannette Scooter. Jeanette did it a few years ago.

Speaker 1: Kyle Schwarber became the fourth Phillies player to do it in franchise history Mike Schmidt nineteen seventy six, Chuck Clin nineteen thirty six, and old Ed Delahanty in eighteen ninety six different ballgame. Back then, guys Ed dela Hanty had two inside the park home runs to get that done. Kyle Schwarber sets a franchise record nine RBIs I mean, Jim, you were in the you were at the y odd How fun was that for you?

Speaker 2: I was, I was at the yard. It was a great night. It was one of my you know, added to the list of memorable nights at Citizens Bank Park, right up there with Roy Hallidays no hitter in the playoffs against Cincinnati, right up there with you know, Jimmy rollins against Broxton and nine and some of the clinchers and Ptolemy's four hundredth. Just it was kind of like, you know, pinch yourself night. And there was so much to it on a personal level for Schwarber, on a team level for the Phillies, but I mean just focusing on schwarbro you know, they have this demoralizing series in New York and he's zero for eleven, and we were talking about it the other day. So much of this twenty twenty five Phillies, so much of the Phillies in recent years has been how Kyle Schwarber goes they go and he bounces back from a difficult series for the team and himself over eleven oh for twenty overall and hits that big home run in the first inning after they were down three to nothing, get him on the board, get to Xhale a little bit, and they have a five run inning, and then they just keep coming, like sixteen over sixteen hundred feet worth of home runs and just a special night, and talking to him afterwards was typically a treat. It's always a treat. He's so humble. He spreads the credit so well. Just a couple numbers, Todd and Rubin this season, they are thirty three and ten when he hits a home run, and they are one and oh when he hits four home runs. They are in his tenure here the four seasons here, one, ten and forty five when he hits a home run. So he's like the pied piper, you know, he starts hitting home runs. The wins follow and that was.

Speaker 2: Calmed everybody down. Rob Thompson after the game even mentioned that he had heard the radio folks saying, boo this team. He had mentioned that in the posts. Yeah, it was kind of remarkable. So they get that win, the Mets lose, they're back up by five. Everybody chill. It's baseball, and it is a crazy game. You can go from zero for twenty to four bombs in one night.

Speaker 3: Unbelievably memory that moment.

Speaker 2: No, I don't think it was that was one of those moments when the building was shaking. It was this was just a sense of appreciation with every home run. I mean, people love shoar bombs, and they got to see four of them. There was a lot of electricity when he came up to the plate later in the gaming and got his fourth bomb, and and you know, there was a really great reaction to that, and then the anticipation in the bottom of the eighth when he came up had a chance to hit number five, and he said, you know, as the d h he's in and out of the batting cage all night, and he said, to somebody, anybody ever hit five home runs in a game? And there was this deafening silence, he said, and he knew right that nobody had ever done it. And the Marlin's got a position player on the mound, and so the game had become a mockery by then, but the Phillies bats turned it into a mockery. But you know, he gets a fifth twenty seven mile an hour slider and just get just misses it. It's hard to make that transition when you hit ninety plus all night. But he didn't get the fifth, but man, he got the four and it was, like I said, one of the more memorable nights I've had in that ballpark.

Speaker 4: Yeah, you know, it's just a lot of things on unpacked, but the importance of them just in general blowing up offensively. That was big for them to come through after really struggling against the Mets, and the Mets obviously have their number, especially a city, but it's nice for them to bounce back. That shows a lot of their resilience. And you know, he's part of the catalyst of being able to make that happen. So it must have been a pretty special thing. And from Afar from over here in Cleveland, it sent sent some shock waves around around Cleveland as well.

I hit four home runs and I almost kind of He kind of gives off that vibe like I really, you know, it was cool, you know, yeah, obviously it was cool, but uh, and then he acknowledged that he did ask in the cage they May, which I thought was like the moment of like candidness or candor.

He didn't seem to be really want to talk about it too much, because I think with Schwarber he respects the game so much. He almost does. You know, he's not going to sit there and go like, I'll tell you what. When I went up for that fourth that bad I said, I'm gonna freaking hit a bomb.

Three hundred and two no hitters. That doesn't include perfect games. There have been twenty four perfect games in baseball history and only twenty one four homer games. So it's rareer to hit four home runs in a game that it is to throw a perfect game. And Sarah Langs, who again is one of my colleagues at MLB dot com, She's unbelievable, absolutely unbelieve If you're on X and you don't follow Sarah Langs, you gotta do it. She comes up with so much great stuff. These I thought were fantastic. So most home runs in a team's first one hundred and thirty four games in Philly's history Kyle Schwarber twenty twenty five, Ryan Howard forty nine two thousand and six, and then Mike Schmidt forty one in nineteen seventy nine. So Kyle Schwarber is very much on I mean, he's tied with Brian Howard right now to tie the franchise record, if not surpass it. And then the most home runs in the first four seasons with the team in baseball history. That's any team in baseball history. Speaker 7: Want to talk a little bit more about the whole Schwarber thing, sure, because the most important thing about what I see in Schwarber is not just the home runs that he's hitting, but the quality of the home muns he hit him off left handers, which is at an historic rate also.

Speaker 4: Cool to watch him develop as like an overall hitter because he's the kind of guy that's very streaky and has been in the past where he'll go in the tank for a long time, like he was oh for twenty or whatever over eleven, but he typically, like when he was younger, would go like oh for or even more than or like one.

Speaker 8: For a lot, really bad months, have bad month, and he is and he has shortened those slumps greatly. And I think it's the work that he does with k Long in the cage it's the approach that he has of getting back to seeing the ball longer and driving the ball, thinking about driving ball through the middle of the field, and all those adjustments have made him a better hitter every single year, not just a better slugger, but a better hitter. His slug comes from his strength and his hand speed, but his hitting ability has come from the work that he's put in to change his.

I mean, after the what twenty three season, when he hit like two hundred, and he hit like against left, he's hit.

He flat out and admitted that, and he went to work and he's probably shortened swing a little bit, but he definitely focus on the middle of the field and he focused on becoming a better hitter. And when you're that strong and you can become a better hitter and improve the quality of your contact, a lot of peop are going to go over the wall. It's a great lesson for people. You don't try to hit home runs. You try to make great contact, and if the loft is right, and the acceleration is right and the active veloci is right, it goes over the wall.

Speaker 1: So, Rubin, you mentioned Kyle Schwarber and MVP talk. I mean, he's hearing the MVP chance at Citizens Bank Park. He certainly deserves serious serious, serious consideration. You know, do you guys have any thoughts on can he actually win it?

Speaker 1: I mean last year was the first time that a full time DH ever won an MVP award. Show Hey Otani last year, but he had to have a fifty to fifty season, fifty home runs, fifty stolen bases. David Ortiz finished top five several times. I think Edgar Martinez finished top five once or twice. Paul Malder finished top five maybe once. I'm talking about full time DH is not a guy that plays you know, Don Baylor, I think he won al MVP and seventy nine he played like ninety games in right field and then seventy games at DH. So that's not a full time DH. So there's a very tough road that he's gonna have to go up. He's gonna have to fight against some history. He's gonna have to fight against, honestly, some guys that at the end of the season they're gonna go All right, let's start with War. Okay, where's Kyle Schwarber rank? As of today, Kyle Schwarber Baseball Reference War is eleventh in the National League four point four and as of last night, he was tied for eighth and war Fangrafts wore four point five, So you know he's top ten ish. So you're gonna have to have some voters. They're gonna to look at all these guys and go, oh, Pete crow Armstrong, he's really falling off a cliff. Kyle Tucker, he's really kind of falling off a cliff in the second half, Bryce Terrang, Nico Horner, some of these show, Hey, you know, he's gonna they're gonna have to look at this and they're gonna have to go, Okay, Kyle Schwarber dh incredible season. Offensively he plays Dhu and then they're gonna have to go, what else does he bring to the table. Well, we see him play every day and he obviously he brings so much to the table. And Jim you said it Thursday's episode. He said it again today at the top of the show, that, man, where would this team kind of be without Kyle Schwarber, And that to me puts him in you know, top two, top three. I don't know if he'll win it, but I could I could sit down. I'll get calls from other voters and go like, all right, who do you got in the Phillies. Tell me about why this guy should gets consideration, and I will tell them that this team would be nowhere near where it is right now if they did not have Kyle Shwarbur in this lineup. I mean, to me, hands down MVP of his team, to me, hands down most most valuable player in the National League. They would be who knows where they would be without him.

Speaker 2: I take very seriously the middle name of the award valuable most valuable player. To me, it's not the guy with the best numbers. Necessarily the guy who had the best season. Some voters you do have that guideline, and I respect it, But I'm looking at the guy who has the most value to his team, the most value to a team that is in it is a contender because the reason all this exist is to try to win championships. So I'm looking at the guy who is that levining agent on a great team, on a good team, and that's to me, Kyle Schwarber. And you know, lastly, I think really helps his chances. It was kind of an iconic moment that's going to resonate with people, but you know, also time and place when it came, it came after for one of their real low points of the season. It came after Aaronola gave up four runs in the first inning. Everybody's like, oh no, here we go again. It was just a moment that grabbed a team that needed it and lifted it. And that's value. And you don't see that on a on a on a stat line. You only see that by by paying attention to a team and being aware of all the nuance and everything else a guy like that brings. So if people are paying attention, this really, a night like this really has to help his chances. I mean it leads to he's okay, he's got forty nine home home runs, he's one off the major league lead. Rawley's got fifty leader unless he hit one at midnight last night. Uh, and he's leading the majors in RBIs pretty you know, and there's there's many others that you want to look at. So I know it's the DH thing, but show heyes, DH. I know he pitches. He's been pitching. To me, it's a two horse race. And they're both great and they both are that leavening agent for their teams. But last night that was to me a iconic signature moment in Schwarber's candidacy.

Speaker 4: I think last year sort of set the precedent for a full time DH to win it. I mean, you can't do it one year and say it's not okay the next year, and so I think that that sort of set the precedent for it. And I'll just bring up one other situation. You know, I was were talked about the ninety five team with the Indians, and you know, we had a guy in Albert Bell who had one of the most extraordinary scenes I've ever seen, and he had fifty home runs, fifty doubles, had about one hundred and forty RBIs.

Speaker 4: He ended up losing the MVP because mo Vaughn was a quality person and a nice person to be around and had a great year for the Boston Red Side. And I think that had some impact on, you know, some of the decision making by the writers.

Speaker 4: Nowadays because everybody's just sort of pounding the numbers. But when you look at the totality of what this person brings to this franchise and what he's done for the team, he is a galvanizing player, not just offensively with what he does at the plate and the improvements he's made, but he's also a galvanizing player as far as the community is concerned, as far as the clubhouse is concerned, and the overall team aspect of the ball club. So he's an MVP on a lot of levels. And it's not just on the field, but I know the on field piece of it.

And you talk about lifting a team, how many guys have had a good night or a good performance or a good week this season in that Phillies clubhouse because maybe Kyle Schwarber supported them during a downtime and helped lift them up and help counsel them. Because he's that type of guy. So he has a to me, a great hall of fame. Maybe someday Hall of fame, but he has a great MVP resume for twenty twenty five.

It was the exact right answer, and I know it was sincere because they he wants a ring in his case, another ring. He got one with the Cubs, but in that room wants a ring. I know they have series like they had in New York. It's baseball, but just a week earlier they had a series against Seattle that was like just the opposite, just as good as New York was bad, you know, and then last night to come home and have a game like this and a statement like this, and Nola, I'll tell you what. He struggled thirty seven pitches in the first inning, but you know after that was like ten pitches, eleven pitches, ten He got it together. You the Braves are not the Braves of old. They got two dangerous bats in the middle. I know they're banged up, they're not gonna play in October, but he still made a lot of good pitches after that. He's got like five weeks to prove that he should be in the postseason rotation and give them something to think about. So to me, even Nola was a step in the right direction. He touched ninety four a few times. So uh, you know, Harper real Mudo Kepler with another home run, just about plastic night. How about a whole bunch of hits, triple running all over the place, bringing energy. It was a terrific night, he really it was.

It's about one hundred degrees and he is throwing ninety eight all day, strikes out sixteen Yankees. And I just remember talking to Bernie Williams after that game saying, wow, is this guy great?

He was at the VET because it was the same day as the Pennsylvania Derby and he had a horse running in the Pennsylvania Derby and Ben Salem at what was then Philadelphia Park. So he's at the game in Arabu. We gave a lot of money to Stinks and it comes off the mountain. He breaks a sprinkler head in the in the visiting club house at the VET, and Shillings just absolutely dominated. It was Shilling's personal World Series and and he he was as his fastball was as hot as the weather that day, and that that really Ruben, will you you would.
