Now boys, Uh, the network has a problem with some of your lyrics.
Would you mind changing them for the show? Forgets you clown? Hey,
our lyrics are like our children. Man, No way, Well okay,
but here what you say? What I got, you gotta get and
put it in you. How about just what i'd like is I'd like to
hug and kiss you. Wow, that's much better. Everyone can enjoy that
four finger discount. Dude. Welcome to four figure Discant where this week we're
here to do a very special review of Gone, all the way back to
the finale of season four. It is an episode that my co host here
is frequently bringing up one particular line, actually several particular lines. There's many
famous moments in this episode. It's an iconic one. It is Crusty gets
canceled. I'm Dando and irom guy. And yes, we are going to
finally answer the question why is a raven like a writing desk? And he's
moving his hands together, which means he must be happy? Yeah or on
cold? No, actually today I'm happy, not as cold today. Dan
Thau has set the thermost out at a very agreeable temperature. We've both got
o hoodies on. We're very very happy to you be talking about Krusty gets
canceled. By the way, why is a raven like a writing desk?
Quite to Lewis Carroll, the writer of Alice in Wonderland, where it originally
came from, because it can produce a few notes, although they are often
very flat. Lewis Carroll not his best work. Not a tight five from
Lewis tight five from John Swatswater. Though with writing of this episode, Holy
moly, yes, yes, this is one of his absolute classics. This
was one of those. This was sort of like the season four equivalent of
Homer at the Bat. So at the Bat worked so well ratings wise that
I would have sort of smash out a whole range of guest stars in one
episode in that one though, though, or a lot of baseball, a
lot of showbiz luminaries. Yeah, this one's like, Okay, we've got
a bunch of famous people we were trying to get into one episode, so
we'd have to sort of fill every episode with a guest star. And I
thought they the idea of Trusty being canceled was such a simple premise, but
an effective one to get that done. To get all the guest stars on
a good reason for them to all be on anyway. Oh yeah, absolutely,
to do a comeback special and then come back specials. Everybody loves an
underdog, even in show business. Like you know, we may think your
time has come and it's time for the hot new model to come in,
but no, we still like We still like the old gray Man, even
if she's not what she used to be. So yeah, bring him back
for another go around. I'm not sure if this was the first time we
saw the old Jewish Man. I don't think it was one of the earlier
appearances. At least anyway, he's the one his fans dropped down. That
is correct. Yes, he went on to become a recurring He was sort
of liked that. I think when it comes to the retirement home, it's
grandbad jasper old Jewish guy, right, I think, oh, yes,
it's just a funny accident. But what did you like the most about favorite?
But like, what are your thoughts about this episode? Because my memories
of it were I never really liked it all that much as a kid,
probably because I didn't know who the guest stars were. For the most part,
I didn't know who beat Me was. I didn't know who e Lizabeth
Taylor was. I didn't know who Johnny Carson was as a kid. You
know. It's just there were these people who were obviously somebody in the Simpsons
universe, toy, but I thought, who are they? Yeah, I
get the feeling the people in the writer's room, swartsweld Are and his Ilk
are very much like Middler, Carson, Hefner. Absolutely, you know,
a listers and they are and they are certainly not. I think that's a
difference between a listers and legends maybe. I mean, I think by this
stage Middler's probably still quite well known. Heffner, of course, is always
going to be well known. Johnny Carson there's a brand name, but they're
not necessarily you know, the kids aren't walking around saying, gotta dress like
Johnny Carson, or you know, oh, I've got to be doing the
bet Middler challenge on TikTok or something like when did Carson finish nineteen ninety?
That sounds about right, because this was apparently one of the last times he
appeared on a TV show after the show finished. Something I really dug in
doing a little half assed research about this was that they initially wanted Carson to
be trusty, almost essentially Cruss to wild be kind of a free loader hanging
out of the Simpson household and mooching off them all. They kind of old
Gil in kill Gill Volume one or two, and he was like, I'm
not doing that. I don't know why. It gave him the krusty voice.
Well, no, no, but it's sort of like the opposite of
what they did with you know, when Carl Weathers was on Arrested Development and
he was just the real cheap skate, it was like, gus, do
you going. Initially when they approached Carl Weathers, it was going to be
like, oh, we just wanted to do a bunch of Apollo Creed gags,
and Carl Weathers, to his credit, was like, Nah, I
don't really want to do anything like that. What if I was really cheap?
It's like, this is Carl Weathers, this is Apollo Greed, this
is Dutch from Predator, and he's just absolutely taken the piece out of himself.
Well, he just knows what's sports comedy, you know he does.
Indeed, he's Chubbs. Johnny Carson was like, He'll always be Chubbs to
ninety kids. That's very very true, very true. But yeah, Johnny
Cars was like, no, still got to be Johnny Carson, and they
basically rewrote it, so he's like this magnanimous showed his mentor. Honestly,
I liked it as well. I mean Carson Carson for a reason. He's
just very pleasant to listen to. His voice is kind of like he is,
isn't he It's a bit like melted butter. Well, the older I
got, the more I appreciated and respected Johnny Carson is purely just freezed tars
as an interview and as a host, right and particularly twenty twenty four.
You look back in his stuff now and go take me back. No carpal
karaoke and no miming songs and gimmicks. It's just it's just good conversation.
It's just chatting to people. Yeah, getting getting the bits in fantastic.
But you're right in terms of, yeah, you would have had some people
at this stage going this is not exactly the cream of the crops showbiz wise.
It's people that my parents really dug. So they very cleverly threw in
a few newer talents, Bella, Luke Perry, Red Hot Chili Peppers,
it's like, oh, we recognize them and they have a mix, didn't
you? You did? Indeed? And they really good sports as well.
Luke Perry in particular, Yeah, showing up the fact that he's the pretty
boy dujure look up to Crusty his half brother. Yeah, but look really
wanting to be part of it, showing a bit of respect for these for
these showbiz legends at all. But also my face, my valuable face is
so great creators. No, what I love the most about that sequence was
just the sound of him going through the glasses. Yes, it was really
great sound work. Was it was? Yeah, just a prooved for no
reason, stacking acid but yeah, a great liner. But I think the
reason I enjoyed it then and I enjoyed it now. I'm always a sucker
for like behind the scenes showbiz stories, come back stories. Yeah, the
business of show business as well. Yeah, you're just not on top anymore.
People don't interesting to Oh I've got to find a way to come back.
It's like Travolta pulp fiction. Very much. Yeah, I mean he
was he was not done, wasn't he as a career Chavoulta when that came
out, But pretty much, Yeah, Geralta was he wasn't cool anymore.
No, no, because I mean he had, of course his seventies Heyday
with you know, Greece and Saturday Night Fever, which wasn't that long before
pulp fiction. It was like within a ten to fift. Well, the
eighties were kind of a wilderness for him because Greece was seventy eight, right,
so by night one did pop Fish went ninety two, ninety four was
ninety four, so give it up. I guess fifteen years is a long
time. But when you think about it, fifteen years ago from now,
it was two thousand and nine. Yeah, he didn't feel that long.
No, that's true. That's true. For to go from where he was
to that. He was working consistantly, and he had a minor comeback in
the Lay dadies with Look Whose Talk and that. I love those movies.
Yeah, and he's really good and it he's like, oh, yeah,
you're really charming and funny and lose shame here in this talking baby movie that's
kind of knaff Brice Wills wasn't it though Brucellas was in it. Well,
he wasn't in it, but he was. You know, the whole story
about that though initially the baby wasn't going to talk at all. Oh really,
that's the whole person them. I think we had discussed this. It's
we that's the selling point, right, I mean the story is based around
what was it called We Couldn't Talk? It was initially called Daddy's Home,
that's right. Yeah. The writer director is this woman Amy Heckling. She
made Clueless and Fast Times originally high. Apparently she got knocked up by Harold
Ramis, who really didn't want anything to do with ghostbusted. That busted made
him feel good? Dear did she calls? And she wrote this story about
finding herself pregnant and alone at a certain age, and yeah, it was
he just did a runner. I think he acknowledged the child later on in
life, but initially he was kind of like, this is not really what
I'm into. I thought we were just having kind of a fling. It's
not do your research on this, folks. I maybe miss my own one.
Howard Ramis under the bus. If that's not true yet, who can
tell? The Internet will tell you. But this is what I've heard anyway.
And yeah, so she wrote this story about it, and I think
the studio is like this is good entertaining enough, John t Roller and Cursey
own there. They've got good chemistry. But I don't know how the baby
actually came into the talking baby came into it, but they put the talking
baby in gavi it. Bruce Willis's boy, all of a sudden, schools
are through. The rip becomes a huge hit. He has like three sequels,
Yeah, at least two of them. I know it was a dog.
There was the sequel. Well, there was a sequel with the girl
with the daughter, which I think was the Roseanne. It was yeah,
look he's talking to and looker's talking now. And maybe they did one with
animals as well. I know you're talking now with the dog. Oh okay,
yeah, but anyway, yeah, but he had a hit with those.
But yeah, it wasn't until Pulp Fiction that Jolter came back and was
like, hey, this guy, we really like this guy. You know
what's surprising to me is that we're so far into this episode and you haven't
uttered the words Gabbo yet. It will tell us what to do. I
did not appreciate Gabbo anywhere near enough as a child. Now listen and go,
what a character. Just incredible. I mean a primo entertainer, you
will give you one hundred percent, but also a dick. But he's also
not real. It's a puppet. I know that's really treated like he's a
person, but no, it was all the ventriloquist. Yeah, but how
is Gabbo doing his doing his tally Gully? I don't know is he real
or not? But he did have the real boy operation. I did love
that on there. We're doing two episodes back today, back to back.
Today we're doing classic or vintage Simpsons episodes. We're doing that exclusive for Patreon
Home. I love Slanders review as well, so looking at season four and
season five, one thing I noticed from the two episodes we're talking about is,
yeah, a lot of great headline games, or maybe not a lot,
but at least some. And I was always a sucker for those.
I was at the after qumsis I'm a bad with a boy and two more
bodies found. By the way, if we're coming ahead to the favorite moments,
what's it my favorite? Anytime any public figure, and particularly those not
in showbiz, start appropriating catchphrases, I always find that marvelous. For Quimby
Sure Sank in the Murder of my enemies. But as Gaba would say,
I'm made bad with a boy reelected just got through the road. It does
this, doesn't it? I'm a bad boy. Great Quimby in these two
episodes as well, and we will talk about we'll talk about one answers,
just really steering with the new England accent. Give me two Dogs, two
Sodas and two ways green bars lovely. I'm not going to say we forget
the wonderful plethora of characters that Springfield has, but there's so many in these
two episodes, particularly in this episode with the squares at the start of the
Springfield Squares just Berry Way coming back, which is fantastic, but from day
yeah, but for Rainy a Wolfcastle to be. It's always great when you
realize, oh, this is in this episode and they're all little bit there's
so many bits of this. Go oh, I can betely forgot about that?
What the hell was that? Or even you know they're playing with the
scale entries. Now let's throw some crumb. There's so many in the two
episodes we're doing today, Homeless Slanders and Cross Against Canceled, so many iconic
means shots. Absolutely, I didn't believe it. But Rainie a Wolf is
at the very start, you know, talking about his new film helped my
son is a nerd, just the way I am horrified to discover he is
a nerd. It's just not a commedation. Just dug himself a hole.
I'm sure you've been there before. Absolutely speaking of that, A Tarantino,
I know as much as you do. I'll do you, fuddy, We
do know about as much as these other were. Just not only he doesn't
want to be my money. He didn't appreciate it. He didn't love it
as much though he loved it. No, he didn't appreciate it. Gave
you nothing, right, that's true, QT. What but what else?
Were your favorite moments? I have not written anything of my favorite moments because
it's all the top of my head. I particularly loved Flee when they enter
Mos because apparently they said to him, look, you pretty much improvised what
you want, but they said, just walking to Moses like hem, it's
amal. The animation they give him as well, just yeah, I didn't
tell them to do that. He just designed to scream like that, like
well, well animated to it. That was one of my favorite moments.
So excited to be there. Speaking of two other things. Speaking of Brockman,
I love it when he does the Gabbo thing as well as that'll hold
the littles. All of a sudden, Brockman in trouble and krusty desperate to
get a comeback first thing for money, gets gets prank called by Gabbo repons.
I rack you very much, Oh, mek you very much. I'm
not in trouble for that. It's terrible to be laughing at these things,
but at the same time you laugh at the fact that he's a dickhead very
much. So Yeah, there was a lot of you brought the castle story
before as well, but Bett Middless wouldn't agree to do it unless they acknowledge
her. So her littering campaign a campaign. That's why she's done doing the
Highway Star. It's great that they were able to fold as many gags and
do it as they did. I mean, it's really one gag that she's
just assaulting these drivers who litter. Yeah, but it works well on the
on the two occasions that they do it. Also, thought Liz Taylor was
a fast very much. Was just like painting yourself as like a villain,
almost like like I'm too good for this, too good for this kind of
thing. Yeah, she was. I always watch this as a kid going
she doesn't seem like a nice person, but you know she was up for
it. Yeah, good honor. But she was the voice of Maggy she
was indeed. Yeah, and she recorded this on the same day. What's
that story that you know? You had to say daddy or something and she's
sexy? Apparently it's not true. Okay, everyone was like, ah,
man, print the legend? What are you doing? Guys? Come on?
Those were my favorite moms, but I'm sure there will be many more
as we as we go throughout the episode. Let's go into some trivia questions,
then, shall we? Next question? You there eating the paste?
How about you start? All right, let's do it. So my first
question for you is, what is the name of the racehorse that Krusty owns
with Bette Midler. It's Cruddler. Crudler, Yes, the sponsor who makes
pure pork sausages. Who is it? Oh? What is that? It's
farmer Dan? Okay. What is the name of the dummy that Crusty has?
Alphons? Alphons? Yes? How did I talk about that? Moment
we were talking about it just gonna laugh. That's the moment that so we
always talk about the two beads of review this episode. He'll tell us what
to do and and they were my favorite moments. This is really threadbaar Din
Store Ventril that just cracks the minute and cracking on the head kicks. It
just looks like the worst kind of course, all the kids of the traumatize.
The kids go kicks it into the audience. Oh I love that so
much. A question for you? Or were you about to give me one?
I just gave you alphons you did? Indeed, well, let me
give you one. Also crust to related. What year was the Worker and
Parasite cartoon made? Oh? So was it in Roman numerals? Was in
actual nineteen seventy five? I'm going to say nineteen fifty nine fifty and I'd
be right, yes. Okay, then well I need two questions written down,
So I'm going to say I'm going to find one more. When they
drove past Hugh Haffner's house, what was it? What was the bus for?
Oh? It said something something. This is Springfield Star Tours, shelley
Ville Star Tours. Shell We will starts sorry, who you have to have
never lived in Springfield? What are you talking about? My mistake? Who
are Johnny Carson's dinner guests that night? Ah? Okay, I won't look
at my notes, so I know it's one from the San Diego Zoo and
it is a doctor. It is doctor Carl Sagan, best known for writing
the book Contact Okay and Joan Embry from the San Diego Zoo. That's the
sweek is that they portrayed it for such a superman in this ditty. Well,
by the end, I'm gonna lift this nineteen fifty nine eighty eighty seven,
eighty seven buicks Gard Yeah, O my head, yes, and then
bouncing Grandpa and Jastra. He said at the NBA playing the accordion, You're
the greatest, Yeah, the greatest manager business. That maybe that guy.
I'll say one more. How many did motel the Chili Peper's agent that the
venue holds? How many people last night? Doub before? Who is Sicho
Mel's manager at Krusty Berger? Oh, Dtor, I'm mister Johannison, Mister
Johanson. Is he got new problem? No? We all just want that
manager. That's really. There's got to add back right. Oh yeah,
just a chill dude. Yeah, all right, So let's get into a
review of Krusty Gets Canceled. The visional air date of the episode was May
thirteenth, nineteen ninety three, production code nine F one nine, written by
John Swartzwilder and directed by David Silverman. So to all timers right there,
absolutely don't wonder. It's a classic. So the episode kicks off with Springfield
Squares at the Springfield Harbor. And we talked earlier about help my son as
a nerd? And did do you remember Celebrity Squares to be called? It
was Hollywood Square. No, we didn't call because Celebrity Squares. Yes,
I loved that show when I was a kid, but it's just gone.
It just disappeared. I feel like we need to bring back fun game shows.
We've got Deal and O Deal like kind of shit. I just want
wackish prices, right, you were saying this the other day, bring back
yes, the hurdling guy. Well, the price is right, still going
in America. Drew carries the host. But I feel like the Prices Rise
one of those shows where you can revive it every ten years or so because
you're taken away and then when you go the prices rides returning to go,
Yes, this is fun, and then we get our fix. And then
five years later there it's been canceled. Well, I wasn't really watching it.
Five years later it's back. It's back baby. It always feels the
way that your family feuds in a bit of a lull moment, but it's
back, baby. We found someone to host when that deal and O deal,
isn't it Yeah, fortune et cetera, cetera. Yeah, but think
big dumb shit like celebrity squares, get a bunch of TikTokers and influences on
there, kids watching. Yeah, yeah, I used to love celebrity scare.
We used to always have who was our main person in celebrity squares because
what we got big was the American one. She was always on there.
Who was the Australian equivalent of whoopee. He was like the Charlie Oh.
We had someone who was always on there. So here's what I'm thinking.
I mean, I know I watched Celebrity Square certainly, but there was one
that I always watched called Blankety Blanks. Oh yeah, Graham Kennedy. Yeah,
we're great. My idol as a kid, Oh fantastic, and Dave
went ugly, Dave Gray, the standard comedian. He had this guy Noel
Ferrier who was probably an actor. He was I can't remember him really acting
anything, but he was kind of a portly, little not stuffy, but
kind of a bit frasier ish. Yeah. This guy Stuart Wagstaff who was
like a yeah, a bit of a not pompous brit but you know,
slightly a little too little too smart and sophisticated with the show, but you
know, he managed to bring just a bit of a class to the proceedings.
Just all these regulars who would show up on the show and sort of
do the rounds of these game shows. It was fascinating. I feel like
for those who are listening overseas, Graham Kennedy if trying to describe me,
he was a combination. He was almost like he was a Carson but with
a bit of Jimmy Fallon thrown into it with the wackiness. He was like,
he was, yeah, if we're going way back to like Carson here,
he's like Carson with Robin Williams energy. Yeah, or say I'm throwing
a really antique names here, but like Jack Benny Yaw like he was just
he was a comedian as well as a host. Yeah, and so a
lot of the comedy bled through, and a lot of it was kind of
not bad boy comedy. He was just like a bit of a cheeky doing.
He said fuck on television, yes, but he said it in the
way of a of a crow. So he was like, fag, I'm
just just being a crow. And I was like, I don't think you
are. What are you getting away with him? He was known as the
king and for good reason. Yes, so Celebrity Squares of Springfield Scarees is
going on. It's a giant title wave with coast garts get away, fifty
foot tight a wave. Charlie refuses to go what was his Who is this
Charlie guy? I have no idea. I'm going to go my next I
should know this. I don't know if he's like an actual person or just
a Springfield regularly, because I was looking and they never they don't put his
name. They do say his name. At one point, I just say
Charlie, do they Charlie must have been like a regular on Hollywood Squares called
Charlie Charlie. Hollywood Squares let's google it right now. She's done this earlier.
Cliff Ar Kett, Oh, yes, he's on Hollywood Square so or
they called him in something else here. But Charlie Weaver, Oh, I've
heard of Charlie. It's Cliff Kett. Cliff Kett is like the father of
the arcades, like Rosanna and Patricia. So cliff Ar Kett is a pit
cliff Ar Keutt and the Hollywood Squares. And it's just cliff I Kett in
the square in the bottom corner. So maybe it's meant to be a take
off of Cliff Arkett. Possibly it looks just like he's just like Charlie on
this on this episode. So and I'm just like we got Barry White back.
He set himself up very nicely in the top right hand corner. Pause,
casually knows where her bread's buttered a lava lamp, Pitt, did you
see that? Yeah, what's gabble? Figure? It's some guys name some
guy named Gable. So that is just the perfect marketing. Just get your
attention first. You go and get the attention first and then draw them in.
But Homer tries to figureut who it's reading the paper, turning it sideways.
Look, I tell you anything, there's teasing it, Dad, It's
just it's just you have to watch it to find out. So he tries
to use all the power in his brain. You see the billboard Garble is
coming and the sermon from Lovejoy. No one is saying, worship this Jerry
Cole that I forgot just how quickly they got into things. Oh yeah,
it's within the within like a minute, it's just Gabbles here, Garble was
coming and everyone's excited. Yeah, as I said, he'll tell us what
you tell us what to do? How great is that? It's the first
clips of Gabbo though he's going to be there every day at four, and
Bart's worrying. Oh he need is a hook. I'm a ban little boy.
Yeah yeah, So then you know, I've never actually seen the connection
there. There you go, that's the you idiot Dan. Oh no,
that's a bit of the Simpsons. You're constantly finding new jokes. There was
a joking Hamah loves Flanners that it was when he arrives at the church of
someone saying something in the background that I never would picked up had it to
be for the subtitles. I was like, I've never. Now that I
know it's there, I'm gonna hear it every time. We'll get into it
and tease for our Patreon exclusive. If it's what I'm thinking. I was
like, oh, I did not know that, not the Fallen one.
Okay, because that's the father one. That's my favorite moment whole episode,
just about back to crusting its cancers. But yeah, so he then sings
his song. Yeah, God, I love him. He's like, oh
Ship, well you screwed now. Crusty is pulling out all the stops.
Yeah, fucking unstoppable Crusty. You know he's not bothering. Yeah, slide
of the Special Olympics. Everyone's trying to take me on and they never win.
But then he gets the ratings and he lost to the channel Ocho,
which is the w be Mande a couple of eggs on the face and he
steals the bit and then which is planning the sea for later, because Crusty
is no for stealing bits from Steve Allen. Correct, Then bart Mill has
Nelson then melting trains on the card track and let's put some crudd on it.
What is the fascination with crud as a kid, What exactly is crud.
I thought crub was just like shit, right otherwise just mak Yeah.
I always thought it was like mud with like sticks and grass in it.
Yeah yeah, I'm a filthy, repulsive, or contemptible person. Is a
crud something something that is worthless, objectionable, or contemptible, So basically anything
that's just crap? Yeah yeah, anyway, as opposed to chud. That's
when the chuds came at me. So you want ventriloquism, do you watch
this? Hello, Well, fans, I've got a riddle for you.
Why is a raven like a writing desk? I don't know. Why is
the Hey? That dummy can't hurt you. He's not even alive, he's
dead. It's iconic, the visual of the kids screaming and his dog just
had burst open and mouth mouth, a gate broken off, broken jewel,
his limbs, the arm off, kicked it. Have you had a moment
this is usually something you see on a golf course, on someone's bits of
dummy, but you throw something the ground and kick it. Have you had
a moment where you spat the dummy and kicked something. I've seen friends snapped
golf clubs of her poles and kick them. I've certainly done some kicking and
to the point where it's like, now I've hurt my foot. I saw
a friend of mine, the white name. Name's not embarrassing, but he
he's keen on this girl. And we always always just went, ah,
she's not really rip mate, Like we can tell she's not leading you on,
but we know you might spiritual occasionally, but we know there's nothing there.
She's not she's not there for the long haul. And then he saw
her. He thought he was like in with he thought she laughed him,
and then he saw her kissing someone else, and he walked out inside the
Rica Hotel here in Geelong and kicked this ben and broke three of his toes.
It's just like, don't laugh, don't laugh, don't laugh. But
that's the universe telling you this girl's not for you. Yes, yeah,
move on, buddy. That girls for the streets. And he is happily
married with two kids. So yeah, yes, all worked out well for
redacted, Yes, redacted, how you do? But basically yeah, so
Acruss is now resorting to offering forty dollars checks will not beyond. So one
thing I do miss about these early episodes when they would have those little very
hush disclaimers like that way checks will not be on it not a guarantee.
It reminds me of just you know us to watch the political ads following.
Yeah. I also why are they speaking so fast and as because you've got
to get all the ship take it up all the time. Then the little
disclaimer has to be. As long as it's in there, you can't understand
anything they're saying. Conditions are but Quimby Now he says he used the city
treasury to fund the murder of his enemies. But I'm a bad little boy.
It's the hands that's what gets me. Now it's she is Scratchy,
who are now on Gabbo. So you can't play she scratchy crusty. He
has to play worker and parasitean always loved worker in parasite. Just this absolute
surreal Soviet from post World War two? What the hell was that? Is
top three I reckon most used screenshots for sixty teams. He's got the cigarette
danger Yeah, and the audience have all left. The ball bailed on Krusty.
So now Krusty is telling everybody that he's been canceled. I remember for
some reason in my head him being canceled and then telling him he's canceled.
But you don't get that. No, I know there's a bleeded scene somewhere.
Maybe they tell him then, I'm not too sure, but it's just
him explained that to the team being canceled. I think it's easy to complaint
this and the other episode where he's basically run out of money. Yeah,
I r s yeah, and he's always got that account. Who's saying Guy
O that side of the cameras, but the think that's the one that's right.
But this is where he doesn't want you're looking family and side show muggets.
A couple of lines here, not teen season equivalent, but you know,
no, you know, welcome family, your whole. Then he sees
Carson goes to see him at his house. I'm sure you you saved quite
the nest egg. I'm like Guy and Dad, I can relate. They're
playing tennis. He runs through his guest list for dinner and doctor Carl Sagan
as he said it, and Joan Embry from the San Diego Zoo. Then
it's cut to him doing an audition for Morrow's Place to stage play. I
guess is it it's honest. Is it a stage, I don't know.
I think I think it's an audition for the show. So the show,
okay, But he's nose and he loses his final ten dollars betting on the
horse at the Springfield downs. Oh, because that's right. The horse comes
up and it's very friendly. No, don't look at me. Yeah,
kids, Then watch Gabbo doing his prank call I've got a big kick,
guys out of him going it's r so you gotta kill the time, you
fill the gap, you can't sit down, and so simple, but it
adds so much it's ringing. Hello. Is this Krusty the Cloud? Is
this the callback for that porno film? Look? It was a little nervous
that day, but I'm all man, I can assure you no. I
represent a Japanese camera company. We'd like to pay you two million dollars to
do a camera commercial. Whoa me riichy very much? Oh? I hope
I didn't offend you. I need this bad, bad enough to hit yourself
over the head with the phone. WHOA you got it? Jo Blood?
What if this is anyone but Steve Rallan, you're stealing my bit. Somebody
had to ruin Gabble's career the way he ruined Krusty's. He wrongs, don't
make a right bike? Yes he do, No he don't, Yes he
do gay do wrong, Lisa. I love it with Homers authoritative like that.
I mean, he's wrong, but he's completely wrong. But he's doing
the whole Father knows best thing. I mean, you've got the glasses on
reading the papers like this guy seems legit. Now, there's an iconic Simpson's
little backstage bit that we used to always do the rounds on marathons and things
like that, which shows Yardley and Nancy recording this in the studio. He
goes, no, no, no, it doesn't. It cuts to ski
pants and Dan and Dan in real times as two wrongs. We can right.
It was all recorded in one take. I want to get this audio
of this bit and then back to back that up because it's so cool Washington
Simpson's voice actors actually doing the show, and there's very limited footage of it
released anyway. That's interesting. It's so weird. I guess at the time
that anything because you look at it's like, oh, we've got the the
guys recording the Lion King The Lion King thirtith anniversary was last week or the
week before, and there was some footage that's just been released. It's like,
you've been sitting on this ship for thirty years. Why have you not
released this? Like, yeah, it's so weird, Like people want to
see voice actors doing the roles. They certainly do. Yeah, But anyway,
so Chrust, he's not doing well, you know that he's falling through
the prank phone calls and all that kind of thing. But then I've got
here home. Yeah, so Bart visits the studio to he's gonna get back
at Gabbo because that's what the two wrongs not making right this was talking about,
and we really spouse down for an ad for Gabbo airlines. It's such
a little jerk, isn't he? Oh Gabbo. But it's like ventraloquism,
right, it's such a unique niche of a career where you're the life of
this puppet. But it's almost like they create a new personality for themselves and
they voice their grievances studio. You get the feeling that someone who's a ventraloquist
has got bipolar, or they got a business, a friendly or something oh.
They they've got a few demons. They're very very repressed people and they're
letting it out through Teddy Bear or whoever. Yeah, everyone always goes to
Stratsman, don't they. They do, Yeah, except I remember there was
one. Remember we had him at pop Culture. Yeah, yeah, I
remember that. When Straisman became a thing, right, it was huge.
It was like so populous, so everyone everyone loved Stratsman for a while,
wasn't It was gabbo oh very much that right, But then this other guy
came around. I can't remember. He's Jeff Doneham Jeff, and he had
the terrorist puppet. Yeah. I was like shout up, I kidd you,
and everyone's like, funck, we cannot do this now. It was
just a terrorist ve like like whoaly ship is the may be wrong about Stratsman,
but I mean he came to pop Culture when we were working there and
I was at some event where he was doing his many people there, there
were a few actually, because he was huge in Australia because he was on
when we had Hey Saturday. It would come and he do bits on that
kind of like some people are just really famous in Australia but not back home.
The guy from Weiredest Brendan. This leasing of Weirdest Tenage Dopey came out.
It wasn't a hit, right, not a hit at all. Number
one in Australia, So let's just go to Australia. There one thing I'd
like about if I was a rock star. I mean, of course he'd
want to be huge, but I think it'd be also great to be kind
of niche, like really big in Germany. It's always Germany and you can
always go back to Germany or Japan. David Hasselhoff, Yeah, he is
an icon. It's like run a little on cash, Okay, time for
a tour of Germany or whatever. Yeah, I think little side hustle.
It's kind of cool about it. What I always loved about the end of
Spinal Tap. You know, it's like, oh, well the band's history.
No, you guys are huge in Japan and they go and they perform
and just love Spiral Tap in Japan. But basically here this is where Gabbo
gets in trouble because but flicks on, well he sounds the wise guy to
go look at the look. Yeah, let's not forget about this. This
guy just he knocks like three of them out of the park. Hey boy,
what's so funny? Oh no, I'm very low brown. And then
this gotta see I was just smiling from the beginning to end. I'm always
happy when you get a wise guy, and oh no, I'm very little
bro. I feel like if you were going to get a Simpsons tato,
it would be the white. It probably would be Yeah, he's your man,
isn't he? He boil, what's so funny? Well, nah,
you wouldn't be interested. It's too low brow. No, I'm quite low
bro. Well, somebody just wrote a body limerick on the men's room wall.
This say, gotta see other kids in Springfield? Or so bees?
Gabbo's kind of language has no place on or off TV. And that's my
two cents. I don't know how those sol bees. What the Then we
see Krusty and he's now dropping his pants for food for food? Will drop
pants for food for food? Yeah? But unfortunately the old Jewish guy's giving
anyway for free, and the old gray man sure ain't what she used to
be. He then they didn't take him home, and he sees the pits.
I see the picture of all the subjects in the wall. But the
first one they see is Luke Perry, who is revealed he is his half
brother. Yeah, that's why I've always thought I may have mentioned on the
podcast before. Or Jack Perry, Luke Perry son, who's a restaurant.
Aw now, why would he not be a guest star of the Simpsons as
Krusty's nephew. It's a very good point. Does he still go by jungle
Boy or whatever? No, he's now just Jack Perry. It's a pretty
cool name. Yeah, it is a very cool name, isn't it.
Jack's just a cool name. Jack, just Jack. Jungle Boy is like,
you know, it's a character, but he's just Jack Perry. It's
like your dad is Luke Perry just big Jack Perry. But Liz Taylor as
well, she's I told him to go away good, but we're not quite
up to that. But yeah, running through the people, said Liz Taylor,
Bette Midler, and they suggested, let's do a special so it gives
them the dress address book. I have to clow my way back on TV.
But it's not gonna be easy. Que the old Jewish guys now hit
and well got the old the old old man dancers. Well this you mentioned
hay Hayes Saturday before. This is very much a Red FAC's skit, isn't
it. It is, although I think the old Man dancers sounds like a
pretty professional outfit. This isn't like an amateur hour thing. It's so weird
that you brought up Hayes Saturday because I watched one video of Red Faces like
three days ago on YouTube. Now my algorithm is just filled with guest appearances
from Red Faces, and there's one that had Will Smith and Shaquille O'Neill as
the guest scorers, and I was like, what a lone up? Oh
god, ye Will Smith. It was the place to be. It was
the big show. Say, when I watch it, that's cornish ship now.
Oh absolutely. When John Blackman, who was the voiceover guy, he
passed away. He passed away recently. Yeah, they had some tributes on
TV and of course they were showing hey, hey clips. It's like everybody
came to hey, this was the best alone. There's Will Smith, there's
all the biggest stars of the day. And then Rove sort of took the
mantle from that, didn't he He did, and then he just sort of
goes, I'm done, and just like retired because you wanted to go tackle
America. Yeah, had Rove America, which fucking taint and some things in
America for a little while. And now and now he's doing radio with Abby
somebody, I think, or whatever. But he's just he's never become Rove
again, has he. He was like the gold LOGI every year kind of
thing. Although I was walking through the supermarket the day, yeah, stealing
stuff, walking through the supermarket the other day, buying stuff, and that
was stealing money from you with the prices, that's correct. Yes, Infletion
was here SLB. I saw you know the rack of magazines that the checkout,
Yeah, it was. I think we might have been TV. We've
got something with the Rove on the cover saying I'm not done yet. So
I'm pretty sure that indicates that you are, by the way, Robe coming
on the show. So friend of the pod, I'll show you, come
on, I'll show you. He probably would actually, Okay, Zack cut
all that out, but it's like, okay, so what are you going
to do? Make a comeback, and good for you. I just to
watch Rove because I always wanted to have my own talk show when I was
kid. That was my thing. I was like, I'm gonna have my
own talk show, and now you do. Now I top, no one
listens. Basically, I wanted my own This thing's not even plugged in.
Yeah yeah, all this time you're on this podcast, you still pay me.
I will happily indulge his man's delusion, will indulge delusions for money,
aw food. So I always wanted to have my own talk show. So
I used to like study Row and then I started and I saw let him
and I was like, oh, this guy knows what he's doing. This
is how you do it. It's Middler. I can't believe you did it
all by yourself. We are Americans. We deserve clean highways. Your pegs.
Oh no, but Middler, shall we all start tours? Bart goes
to see who you have. No, we get chili peppers at Mo's,
and we want we want chili. Really it was a love but sort of
smuggling them out by saying, look over there, what is it. I'm
gonna stop looking soon. So great is that it? Can I look too,
It's gonna cast it now back to the wall, Liz Taylor. I
told him the buzzer good. Then they arrive and Crusty's completely overweight. How
long were they gone for? This is me eating drinking of the milkshakes,
but I understand that. But how long were they gone for? Because he's
ballooned? This is an absolute tangent, but it's something I've always found very
funny. Ryan Gosling years ago, was cast by Peter Jackson to be the
lead in this movie, The Lovely Bones. He was meant to play this
grieving father and Ryan Gosling he looked like Ryan Goslin this day, so we
thought, well, this dad is going to be a bit of a sad
sack. He like melted tubs of Ben and Jerry's in his microwave and just
drank it. And to put on a but to put on some weight fast
to be the dad in this movie. He got on New Zealand where Peter
Jackson was making the movie. Peter Jackson, look at you'd been in my
movie looking like that, You're fined. He didn't. He got replaced by
Mark Wulburg. Holy shit, why because such Jonnage wasn't he supposed to put
on weight? Though? I think I don't think he consulted Peter Jackson on
what he he was going to do. Think Jackson was back now and goes,
I had gossling. I supposed to Wholburg. Warburg was was pretty hot
at that. So they found Krusty. Yeah, he's put on all the
weight and they said, look, can you move in with us and how
we get back into shape. Homo says, they've got a sofa bed bed
that was the previous one. Tries a bit open. Then they're working on
his pie routine, his aim and hit him in the face of the piets
or warm. It's actually piping hot piping, so delicious. Yes, Then
we get the boxing and he sees Gabbos and he punches Homer pop prices off
through the roof. He cuts back. Yeah. Then Krusty is I always
liked the bit of Marge and in the aerobics. Yeah, I didn't touch
it with their matching leotards and stuff. It's like the Crusty is just he's
accepted here. Yes, I've hit rock bottom. These people are not like
professional trainers, but these are the only ones who are willing to help me
now. And he's acknowledging that, and it's nice. At the end the
kids get acknowledged as well. That's true. Yes, and you've also got
Krusty's trying to get into shape by doing the rocky thing, punching the big
side of be and Homer, of course, is taking bites out of it,
because when people go out of their way to help you with things,
you should always acknowledge them, shouldn't you? You should indeed, So now
Chrusty is begging Mal to return to the show. He's working at the Gulp
and Blow, and he's refused. He guess no, here I'm being respected.
Mister Jannison treats me with dignity except the earlier version of the squeaky voice
tin. I want to say, he's got the voice, but he's not
quite designed right yet. I guess not. I tac over and to the
thing. Ah oh another. Honestly, it's twenty twenty four and this shit
still happens. You look at people in Case and you're like, oh,
look at you guys. You are not going to be making my hamburger correctly,
you know, Oh no, you're You're an absolute buffoon. I'm not
sure how familiar or appreciative listeners of Forfinger Discount are of the Australian podcaster and
YouTuber friendly Jeordie's. But he'll occasionally have this thing where it's like KFC horror
stories or fast food horror stories? Is he still doing Is he still doing
his bit because he was like all the ray you Yeah, he was off
the radar for all because someone burned down his house. Yeah yeah, but
was that not a publicity that wasn't known? It was. It was a
really good one. But yeah, he'll do these ones occasionally, like right
in with your fast food worker horror stories and yeah, some of the ones
are here, particularly bad KFC are just like, oh, I'm never having
you know, tenders again. Yeah, because the shrunk triggers, right,
yeah, shrink flation. We're in the pool. But so yeah, basically
Mail refuses to come back, which is just planting the seeds for the big
return later on. By the way, Also just great line from not quite
Squeaky Boys team. But yeah, that's a bit of an I kind of
one. Had a girlfriend should kill me, she'd kill me? Yes,
and outstip of the rehearsal, Loup Perry is doing his balloons crust. He
does a horsey I think it was, and Perry does a nineteenth century carousette
and he kicks him out, I love this please, he's for love's sake.
Oh fine, I'll find something for you, and he has the vision
of him hitting the brick wall and new look for Look, Yes, new
look for Luke, Our time for the spash the special, So Krusty Special
tonight, gabbled have real boy operation Now they planned the seeds earlier in the
episode about ray J Johnson, Yes, which was when he was talking about
how they're being canceled, and these are the guests we're getting on. No,
no, we had great guests except for ray J Johnson. Now that's
who Gabbo has. So Krusty now suggests to the chili pepers. Now,
this is apparently a take on from the Doors movie. When was it Ed
Sullivan who suggested that the doors don't sing? Certain looks a light my fire.
So yeah, whether this actually happened on the Ed Sullivan Show is up
to debate. But the design of where the way they're sitting in this shot
is exactly how the doors were in the film. Yeah, I want to
revisit the Doors of the film. I remember really enjoying it when I was
like, I've watched since I was a teenager, but I remember Kim were
being really good. I loved it. Yeah, big fan of the Doors
movie. Yeah, I have to check it out. You've got I think
it's Flea who's doing a lot of thrusting. He's always thrusting, but just
the everyone can enjoy that, so many great moments. Yeah, forget you,
Claire. Okay, but what about what I wanted? I want hug
and kiss you. Oh that's much better. I just wish I had it
actually sung that. Later on I heard them actually singing those lyrics. But
this was great publicity for the Chili Peper. They're already a huge band with
the kids, right, but if parents are watching this, they'd be put
into such a more positive light. Oh god, yeah, like, oh
they're nice guys. Yeah, they're not these weird sort of sex magic dudes
from the La Underworld. Yeah. Then just a bunch of nice guys.
Yeah. So then they're playing their underpants. He sings send in the Clowns.
And this is a great rendition, isn't it? It is? And
it's moving even like twenty twenty four, it's twenty years ago this episode aired,
or even not more. It's still moving where Mal walks in, Yeah,
I borrowed a bit from the Elvis Si exten a lot of based Yeah,
but I love your crusty quiet. Then he shoots Luke Perry out of
the cannon and just my face, my valuable face, and just as you
said, the sounds through the glass landed a pillow factory explodes. I love
the content looks like a bunch of pillows that it cuts to crusty it crowd
of Blauds. Then the chili Pepper's look at it, look at him out
there, saying so degrading is where's my lalie for the little stinker sketch.
Carson then lifts the nineteen eighty seven Buick skylike above his head while oh no,
I'm thinking of another bit of music. So you have then playing stuff
from Tayler's looking at her diamonds, and she don't need to fire my agent.
Then Bette Midler does distribute as she did to Carson, win beneath my
Wings, which she's saying on the I think the second last episode of Carson.
It sounds about right. I've never liked win beneath my Wings No,
for reasons it strokes means the ultimate humble brag song. I was like everything
I do is great. I'm doing so fantastic in life, couldn't do it
without you. But check this out. You know I'm the one with the
wings. You're just the wind beneath. That's fine, that's fine. I
can fly fire. You just win. I can fly higher than an eagle.
Not without you, though you helped. If Bett Miller said that song
for you, would you feel special? I would? I get what you're
saying. Yeah, yeah, it's like I'm the important one. You've You've
helped me get to where I am. But go google the lyrics of wind
Beneath My Wings and it's basically this person saying everything's going so great for me.
Thanks. You deserve an Emmy for this cause more Dinalds. That's just
the Simpsons riders getting bad at them with the Emmys. Then it's time for
the celebration party at Mo's and there's a he's getting cold fish on the love
test. I've test behind me here, you do, indeed, I saw
it right here, So I hold off with the camera. There it is
love test. Not sure it's in focus or not. But now I'm out
of focus. I think, okay, my focus, I know my focus.
I'm sure find out. But the love test here pretty sure you'd be
a hot to Marley, I would be a you'd be a casanova, that's
for sure. Is that the top one? Yes, hot tomorrow is a
second o the guys, you've be number two. You're the wind beneath you
have is a cold fish and he's happy about it. Apparently might have been
so in real life, and his lady is, but you know who among
us? Then Carson says, now, remember save money. This time he's
a rubistatic fand I was crusty. No. Then Chili Pepper's arrived. He
it's so great, and Hithert and Wigham are in now andies as well,
do that my handies. And then the kids say they're getting fift percent of
the shirt sails. That the sweetest blooms of the club. That's the sweetest
plum. Yeah, they pulled the George Lucas. It's the biggest fantastic That's
one of the things. I was just happy, so happy for George Lucas
when he when he made all his millions and he still billion but when he
made his billions. But the same with the folks at Fox is like okay,
yeah, fine, you can have all this at the merch. They're
like Wars next thing, you know. Now, there is a moment here
when Carson is playing the theme and the Grandpa and Jasper everyone's gathered around the
shot. Just prior to that. Did you see what was out the window?
Tell me it's Liz Taylor looking in. Oh, I never noticed that
as a kid over the last movie review. I think I may have noticed.
But yeah, Liz Taylor's at the window gazing, wishing she was part
of the party. Oh, nice little easter. Good on Liz Taylor for
Oh, she had nothing to do with that, but playing there, but
being part of two Simpsons episodes, yeah, I mean they got They of
course attracted a lot of great talent over the years and still do. I
don't know whether she was actually marketed as being Liz Taylor in the Simpsons this
week when it was her voicing Daddy, but certainly for a certain cohort,
and particularly we know when this episode comes out. I mean, you're thick
in the generation x Weeds. Even if people aren't like oh, like I
was saying, for oh, Liz Taylor is like an A list. I
mean, you're not going to get her for your She's still a good she's
still a really good get, cause she's like legitimate Hollywood royalty. But not
for kids, the kids, No kid, I couldn't give a shit.
But but honestly, yeah, for a slightly more grown up audience or slightly
grown more grown viewers, like these guys mean business because even you know the
name Elizabeth Taylor, right, I knew. I knew of her, Yeah,
you know, she reminds me of another name who I don't know anything
about her. When I was a kid, but I always used to hear
people talking it was lies of Menelly. I'd always hear people talking about Lis
of Monelley. I'm like, who is this lies of Menaley? She's obviously
somebody. Yeah, but I couldn't tell you who she was, And she'd
be on the Nanny should be doing this something like who are you? Why
are you on all these shows that I want? And it's great when you
well, if you get curious and you sort of wind the tape back and
you say, oh my god, they can do all this fantastic stuff.
All they inspired all these other people. You can see the influence that they
had on so and so. A few years down the line, it's one
thing I love about heart and entertainment. It's like, yeah, just going
back a little bit. Oh, this influenced this, This influenced this.
I watched this really old movie a couple of weeks ago called Metropolis. It's
like a German movie from my twenties. Yeah, you love that movie?
I do like it. No, No, what's the one you have the
poster of Metropolis? Yeah? Yeah, I mean it's very much of It's
like it's a silent movie from the nineteen twenties, but you look at the
shit in that and it's influenced so many fucking things. What's the action movie
that is influenced basically every action movie we've ever seen? Oh that's a good
point seven something, was it? Oh seven Samurai? Yeah yeah, unless
you're a movie No, I mean it's highly acclaim, but the average person
probably hasn't heard of it. But if that at least watched it. Yeah,
still the name sort of you would you will have heard it even if
I haven't seen it. But yeah, overall, Chrussy gets canceled. This
is just basically them sort of pulling their dickeat and saying, look at us,
look at all the guest stars we have. Yeah, it's very much
a time capture ninety three. Though all the guest stars here aren't really relevant
now, any of them. I think it's just nice we lived through this
ear so we know who the guest stars are. But Alliot would watch this
now and go, I don't know who any of these people are. No,
you wouldn't know Luke Perry probably, yeah, probably wouldn't even know the
Chili Peppers, not until he's older, as the Chili was probably the one
that sort of lasted the longest, as Flea calls them the red Hots.
Yeah. So yeah, thank you guys for your support. He had four
