In my experience, the cardboard will work best, albeit temporarily. Eventually, it will break down and yes, the roots can come up. But, I’ve found the same to be true of landscape fabric. Trees’ roots and invasive grasses like Bermuda, grow right through landscape fabric. But, there are different thicknesses available. I’d recommend getting as thick of fabric as you can find.
