<v Speaker 3>of you wrote this clever little book called Life Advice
<v Speaker 3>from mister Dill Pickles.
<v Speaker 6>Yes, it was a fun project to work on together.
<v Speaker 3>So, John, you're an author, you've written many many books, yes, right,
<v Speaker 3>and you decided have you written a book with your
<v Speaker 3>grandsons before?
<v Speaker 6>No, this is the first book I've written with my grandsons.
<v Speaker 6>Some years ago, I wrote a book with my oldest daughter,
<v Speaker 6>Bonnie when she was in college. So it's always fun
<v Speaker 6>to write the books with people in your family. And
<v Speaker 6>I'm so happy that the two of my grandsons said, hey,
<v Speaker 6>we'll do the book with you, as long as our
<v Speaker 6>cat can do.
<v Speaker 7>It as well.
<v Speaker 3>Oh that was the thing. Okay, so as long as
<v Speaker 3>the cat could do it. And is there an age
<v Speaker 3>range for this book?
<v Speaker 6>Well, actually, if you can read and you'd like to laugh,
<v Speaker 6>there's really no age limit. Or you've had people in
<v Speaker 6>their young elementary school to their senior senior years and
<v Speaker 6>they've sent us messages and emails and they just think
<v Speaker 6>the book is just so outrageously funny.
<v Speaker 3>Very funny and really cool. So you gave me a
<v Speaker 3>little hint here. But is there a real mister Dill
<v Speaker 3>Pickles who inspired books? Okay? So first, how did you
<v Speaker 3>get the name Del Pickles or mister Dill Pickles? But
<v Speaker 3>I didn't understand the mister but Dill pickles.
<v Speaker 7>Me and my brother like to eat pickles, and it's
<v Speaker 7>one of our favorite foods.
<v Speaker 3>But you had to add the dill. You only like
<v Speaker 3>the dill pickles. Yeah, no gurkins, no sweet bread and
<v Speaker 3>butter pickles for you guys.
<v Speaker 6>Right right. And they thought mister Jill Pickles sound he
<v Speaker 6>kind of glassy, so that one stuck.
<v Speaker 3>Yes, very classy. Not only do I love cats, but
<v Speaker 3>I also love pickles. So tell us about the real
<v Speaker 3>mister Dell Pickles.
<v Speaker 7>He really likes to play and he's very energetic, okay.
<v Speaker 3>And what kind of a cat? Is he a certain
<v Speaker 3>breed or just a mix? Was he rescue?
<v Speaker 6>He's a tux feedo cat, And once he got to
<v Speaker 6>the house, he pretty much decided he was going to
<v Speaker 6>be the king of the castle.
<v Speaker 3>Like don't they all right? I have a tux too,
<v Speaker 3>But yours has a better name minus Molly heres his
<v Speaker 3>You know, mister Dell Pickles, which sounds very fancy. Does
<v Speaker 3>he like pickles? He like to like dim He doesn't
<v Speaker 3>really eat him, doesn't really eat him, okay, not up
<v Speaker 3>his alle. Okay, So tell me what makes mister Dill
<v Speaker 3>pickles qualified to give life advice. John, do you want
<v Speaker 3>to take this one?
<v Speaker 6>Well, the kids want to add something first?
<v Speaker 7>Oh is Thredi pickle wolves that he is filled with
<v Speaker 7>great wisdom and being a generous cat that he is,
<v Speaker 7>he wanted to pass along some advice.
<v Speaker 3>Okay, all right, very good? And then John, what did
<v Speaker 3>you think of having, you know, mister dill Pickles give
<v Speaker 3>life advice?
<v Speaker 6>Well, I figured, like you said, with all cats they
<v Speaker 6>feel like they rule the ruse through the king of
<v Speaker 6>the castle. So I figured misterill Pickles would certainly have
<v Speaker 6>a lot to say about advice for cats and really
<v Speaker 6>as humans for will if you read between the lines.
<v Speaker 3>Yep, I do, got it. Let's talk about some of
<v Speaker 3>the more poignant pieces of advice that are in the book.
<v Speaker 3>What would you say are some because you have several
<v Speaker 3>y'all like you pegment which.
<v Speaker 7>Especially at their pam, they need to know you have thoughts. Okay,
<v Speaker 7>and show love in weird ways. Headbuts burrang for presenting
<v Speaker 7>a half dead mouse.
<v Speaker 6>They'll get it.
<v Speaker 3>Oh, so you think that is one of the best
<v Speaker 3>pieces of advice when the cat brings you a reward. Yes,
<v Speaker 3>So I have to say the only thing my cat's
<v Speaker 3>brought me was a lizard because I'm in South Florida,
<v Speaker 3>and I'm okay with that. I don't know if I
<v Speaker 3>would do so well with the border of rodent. Has
<v Speaker 3>mister dol Pickles brought you either of those things?
<v Speaker 7>Not really yet. But he's still quite young.
<v Speaker 3>Oh how old is he?
<v Speaker 7>He just turned a year a couple months ago.
<v Speaker 3>Ah, so pretty much. It's kind of like a kitten still, John,
<v Speaker 3>what is your favorite piece of advice in the book?
<v Speaker 6>Favor piece of advice is actually two of them. It's
<v Speaker 6>number five, never come when cold and also at closed doors,
<v Speaker 6>because what cat does not like to meal? I'll be
<v Speaker 6>trying the door is closed.
<v Speaker 3>That is so true. Actually, my partner, I'll see him,
<v Speaker 3>you know, we both work from home, and I'll see
<v Speaker 3>him on the couch. What's happening done to the day? No,
<v Speaker 3>Molly wanted me to come sit with her. Said, really,
<v Speaker 3>you can't just ignore the me out. No, I cannot.
<v Speaker 3>So so true. And you know I have to say
<v Speaker 3>the advice number six star into the void and the
<v Speaker 3>fact that you put the cat fun cat that cats
<v Speaker 3>can see euv lights. I had another guest tell me
<v Speaker 3>that they called it cat TV when cats just stare
<v Speaker 3>at nothing like your couch cushion or the wall, just
<v Speaker 3>glaze over staring like that.
<v Speaker 6>They do love to stare, that's for sure.
<v Speaker 3>I think that's one of their specialties. Okay, how did
<v Speaker 3>you come up with the cat fun packs?
<v Speaker 6>I figured, along with the advice from mister Jil Pickle,
<v Speaker 6>there should be a fun fact. It's kind of semi
<v Speaker 6>serious and sometime I'm serious, so we thought that would
<v Speaker 6>be a nice mix. And based on reader feedback, they
<v Speaker 6>liked both the funny advice from mister Jill Pickles and
<v Speaker 6>the cat fundbacks.
<v Speaker 3>Yeah. I love both. I love both and so true.
<v Speaker 3>I'm reading the Cat Fun Packs and I've been doing
<v Speaker 3>cat Tea for eight years, so I've learned a lot
<v Speaker 3>of facts about cats. Whatever I didn't know, I'm still,
<v Speaker 3>you know, I'm learning as I go, but I've learned
<v Speaker 3>so much. And yeah, all the cat fun facts were like, okay,
<v Speaker 3>nod yep, I got that. I remember hearing that. Okay.
<v Speaker 3>I don't think I heard from both the boys any more. Favorites,
<v Speaker 3>Alex Gavin, do you have a favorite piece of advice?
<v Speaker 7>I like the cats love sunbathing because it helps them
<v Speaker 7>stay warm, plus it's basically a spot treatment. Oh yes,
<v Speaker 7>one of my favorites is cats prefer crinkly paper and
<v Speaker 7>bottle caps over toys because chaos is priceless.
<v Speaker 3>Oh yes, so true. Here's one of my favorites. I
<v Speaker 3>can't find the chapter, but I remember it really Oh,
<v Speaker 3>sleeping impossible shapes. You know people have had the saying
<v Speaker 3>cats are liquid. Yes, I actually have a show on
<v Speaker 3>that too. It's It's hard, this s broke book. That
<v Speaker 3>brings a lot of memories, which also makes it great.
<v Speaker 3>But I had a show like that too. And cats
<v Speaker 3>just yeah, they just make themselves fit anywhere. So yes,
<v Speaker 3>which is mind boggling and so true. All of a sudden,
<v Speaker 3>you're looking down and have you, guys ever had mister
<v Speaker 3>dill Pickles hide like in your closet and not realized
<v Speaker 3>he'd got in there and went to look for something,
<v Speaker 3>and the cat just jumped out at you.
<v Speaker 7>Yeah, he lost the hide in the bathroom, and whenever
<v Speaker 7>someone walks by, he'll jump out at them.
<v Speaker 3>I'll tell you another favorite, because this actually happened. Which
<v Speaker 3>chapter is the one where the cat attacks your toes?
<v Speaker 6>Not sure it's a moment, but I do know that
<v Speaker 6>when my wife and I were visiting their house in
<v Speaker 6>North Carolina last year and we stayed overnight. Mister dill
<v Speaker 6>Pickles is such a ninja cat. Because I tried to
<v Speaker 6>close the bedroom door so he wouldn't get in, and
<v Speaker 6>I don't know how he did it. Literally, within like
<v Speaker 6>a half a second, he dared it in and I
<v Speaker 6>didn't know it, and he's under the bed. All of
<v Speaker 6>a sudden, I hear this cat noise in the middle
<v Speaker 6>of the night. I realized he got in somehow.
<v Speaker 3>That's clever. He's definitely good to give advice. You mentioned
<v Speaker 3>this in the book, but I can't recall the chapter
<v Speaker 3>how cats like to attack things, especially toes, and they
<v Speaker 3>seem to be you know, it's the middle of the
<v Speaker 3>night or early morning or right when you're going to sleep,
<v Speaker 3>and if you're moving around you see something moving under
<v Speaker 3>the blanket, they're ready to attack and you know, hello,
<v Speaker 3>it's my foot. Do not attack. But yep, they're very
<v Speaker 3>interesting creatures. All right, we're going to take a short

<v Speaker 3>bit in the first part. But what made you decide, Okay,
<v Speaker 3>I'm going to write a book and we're going to
<v Speaker 3>write it together. What was it? Did you get the cat?
<v Speaker 3>It was app do you have, mister del Pickles, I'm sure.
<v Speaker 6>As you know. I'm the founder of I Love to
<v Speaker 6>Write Day, which is a grassroots campaign I launched in
<v Speaker 6>two thousand and two to have people of all ages
<v Speaker 6>spend time writing every November fifteenth. I believe that everyone
<v Speaker 6>should write a book, even a cat. And when my
<v Speaker 6>oldest daughter, Bonnie was in college, we co wrote a
<v Speaker 6>book called for God and Country. When there was a
<v Speaker 6>chance to write a book with two of my grandsons
<v Speaker 6>and mister Dill Pickles, I jumped right in and.
<v Speaker 3>Boys, what lead you decide?
<v Speaker 7>I wanted to write the book. Video would be a
<v Speaker 7>fun way, and I've alreadys wanted to write a book,
<v Speaker 7>and I want it would be a cool idea. And
<v Speaker 7>I've always loved writing, so I wanted to connect with
<v Speaker 7>my public.
<v Speaker 3>Well, I admire all of you. You know, it's on
<v Speaker 3>my bucket list to write a book. I love to read,
<v Speaker 3>so it's on my list, all right, let's talk about
<v Speaker 3>some more about like advice with mister del Pickles. Do
<v Speaker 3>you think the book that this is a little far
<v Speaker 3>of a stretch in a sense, but maybe not. I
<v Speaker 3>think that the one of the underlying messages for the
<v Speaker 3>book is that it can help people understand cats better,
<v Speaker 3>especially since you have the cat fun fact at the
<v Speaker 3>end of very chapter. So do you think by helping
<v Speaker 3>people understand cats better that it might help with cat adoption?
<v Speaker 7>I think it could help with cat adoption and showing
<v Speaker 7>how funny and cute cats can be. I think it
<v Speaker 7>could help people adopt cats.
<v Speaker 6>Let's face it, cats need love, people need love, So
<v Speaker 6>it's win win for everyone, exactly.
<v Speaker 3>You know what they say, You can't adopt one, you
<v Speaker 3>have to adopt two at a time. So does mister
<v Speaker 3>don't Pickles have a partner?
<v Speaker 6>Not yet?
<v Speaker 3>Well, you guys, not everybody can adopt two cats one.
<v Speaker 3>So mine came. I had one, and then two came together,
<v Speaker 3>and then another two came the other. But yeah, I
<v Speaker 3>had five at one time, but two were like community
<v Speaker 3>outdoor cats, five and two dogs a lot of fur
<v Speaker 3>in the house. But I always think that there is
<v Speaker 3>some truth to the fact that cats the joy. And
<v Speaker 3>the wonder of cats is that you don't understand them
<v Speaker 3>and that's what makes them so special. And I think
<v Speaker 3>it's important to get that message out. And once people
<v Speaker 3>get the message, then they're like, you know, I have
<v Speaker 3>to look at it a different way because there's that
<v Speaker 3>misconception that cats are like small dogs. So I think
<v Speaker 3>your book can help people understand caps better and realize
<v Speaker 3>how quirky they are and fun and you know, they
<v Speaker 3>just have a lot of attitudes and their way of
<v Speaker 3>doing things and it doesn't mean it's wrong. So that's
<v Speaker 3>one of the messages I kind of got from your book.
<v Speaker 6>It's true cats do bring a lot of joy into
<v Speaker 6>our lives, don't they.
<v Speaker 3>They sure do, and bizarre happenings too, So everybody from
<v Speaker 3>you know, I have a very large listening audience for Catitude,

<v Speaker 6>especially if it's important to you. But you shouldn't take
<v Speaker 6>it personally because gravity is lifestyle choryes for cats. Is
<v Speaker 6>they see something on the edge of a table or
<v Speaker 6>a counter, they just want to jump up and push
<v Speaker 6>it aside. So don't take it personally. But CAATs do
<v Speaker 6>love to knock things over, as all cat lovers know.
<v Speaker 3>Very good. So let's talk about the future. Is there

<v Speaker 3>Are you can have any recipes for the holidays for cats?
<v Speaker 6>Well, we're thinking about that. We've asked mister Dill Pickles
<v Speaker 6>if he had any favorite recipes and he's kind of
<v Speaker 6>looked at us and said, yeah, So I think that's
<v Speaker 6>a positive answer.
<v Speaker 3>Yes, that's very positive. Is the holiday season we're talking?
<v Speaker 3>Probably Christmas time? Thanksgiving time? Is that mister del Pickles's
<v Speaker 3>favorite time year?
<v Speaker 6>Yes, it's his favorite once he gets through Halloween, and
<v Speaker 6>he loves to dress up for Halloween. He's just ready
<v Speaker 6>for Thanksgiving, Christmas, and he likes to ring in the
<v Speaker 6>New Year with his little fancy hat on.
<v Speaker 3>Okay, great, well we're close to Halloween now, so what's
<v Speaker 3>he going to be for Halloween?
<v Speaker 6>Well, he's looking at maybe a baby Yoda costume, but
<v Speaker 6>we're not really sure. He likes to change his mind
<v Speaker 6>at the last minute.
<v Speaker 3>Oh, typical cat. Like So, mister dill Pickles is a
<v Speaker 3>tuxedo cat. Boys, if you were going to get a
<v Speaker 3>playmate for him, say tomorrow, what type of cat would
<v Speaker 3>mister Dill Pickles get along the best with.
<v Speaker 7>I don't know, maybe another tuxedo cat, so they're similar.
<v Speaker 3>So the colors, yeah, so just black and white, no ginger, no,
<v Speaker 3>no orange cats.
<v Speaker 6>What about sphinx that would be a good Yeah. I
<v Speaker 6>bet the sphinx cat will also run and write a
<v Speaker 6>book as well.
<v Speaker 3>You know, Sphinx cats are a very high maintenance. I
<v Speaker 3>almost adopted one, and then I didn't think my cat
<v Speaker 3>crew would like it, and I was afraid he would
<v Speaker 3>get hurt. I have very unusual cats, well in my mind,
<v Speaker 3>but they're probably not you think you'd get along with
<v Speaker 3>the sphinx.
<v Speaker 6>Maybe we'd have to read up on first just to
<v Speaker 6>see what just what the likes and quirks are.
<v Speaker 3>Right, Well, they're high maintenance, that's what I know of them. Gentlemen,
