So had any ideas for names, Yancy, I'm sort of thinking one.
Daddy has a present for you today. Do you know what it is.
It's a lucky clover that can help you be successful whatever you do, even
break dancing, and it once belonged to someone very special. I know what
name you want to give him, Yancy. It's okay, really, son,
I'm naming you Philip J. Fry in honor of my little brother who
I miss every day. I love you, Philip, and I always will.
Here lies Philip J. Fry, named for his uncle to carry on
his spirit. Could news everyone, I'm back, baby. You welcome to
Tales of Futurama, exclusively here on the four finger Discount Patreon channel. Thank
you guys for supporting us here and getting access to this show this week.
We're here to review the episode with the production code of three ac B zero
four. The tissue is ready. It's the Luck of the Friarish. I'm
Dando and I am guy. Yes, you're right, there will be tears
in this discussion of the Luck of the Friarish. But I initially thought will
there be? What's the deal with this episode? I'm sure I'm enjoying this
all that much. But this episode is the very definition of stick the landing.
We're just discussing on going down to South Park. Sometimes you just got
to just keep watching, you know. I often say to people who are
breaking back. It was the example I brought up first episode. I love
the first episode. Some people for some reason just don't really enjoy it.
It's like, just keep with it, you'll eventually fall in love with it.
This episode not so necessarily like great bits, but when it comes to
a story from like A to Z, from beginning to end, it's just
so well told. Yes everything from not everything but A through maybe X is
like, what's going on here? What's the point? Okay, yeah,
I sort of see what this man's all matters in it. Is this going
to add up to anything? And boy does it? Yes? Yes,
it's because they don't foreshadow the ending in any way like you're I mean,
I've got here. You almost feel the same guilt as Fry as a viewer.
You just like you think, oh, this is the answer. Guy
was a prick, Like the way he's there's no foreshadowing that is going to
be like the baby face turn at the end. And then when it comes,
it hits it so hard, like I've just got here. I thought
I was ready to rewatch this one. I haven't rewatched this one in a
long time. This one doesn't get me emotionally. It's a different reason.
They maybe because I'm a father. I don't think I've watched this episode since
being a father. It's been years, right, But Jurassic Bark was always
the onst the one everyone talks about the dog, right because everyone can relate
to having a pet and the fact that he waited and waited for Fry.
I'm not looking forward to doing no right, But this one he hits me
for different reasons because the reveal I remember, I remember Philip being Yancey's son.
I remember that being the thing I completely forgot about. The drawing on
the nursery war. That was a moment where I was like, oh fuck,
because when he grabs it out of the grabs the drawing, I was
like, there's gonna be a reason for that. When he when he's going
through Fry shit and he grabs the far Age twenty, I'm like, it
wouldn't just grab it for no reason. And then when I saw it on
his son's wall, I was like, oh, that is so fucking beautiful.
That was just like, I think that was just Futurama storytelling and its
absolute finest, that drawing on the wall. There's not much I can not
much can add to that, dandel in all honesty. Yeah, this is
an episode that lands maybe two or three good punches, and their punches that'll
just knock you down to the floor. Yeah, yeah, but it was
because for me, it was the painting the picture on the wall that was
just that got me. That's when I started nearly crying. Yeah, oh
yeah, just well, just the naming of future Philip Philip rys. Oh
and as of view, you're like, oh shit, that's oh oh yeah.
And when you're forced to reevalue everything that's sort of gone before, or
you know, even feel in the blanks about certain things again, oh god,
it must have been this mess him in that and it's been really hard
for this family and all that kind of stuff. Oh you know, we've
been the show and yeah, the audience, by extension has sort of been
making light of this whole situation of oh wow, he got frozen. Now
it's millennium in the future, and anyone from the past who has come in
like his girlfriend for example, she didn't really miss him all that much,
no, no, but never showed, never showcase the impact of his family
losing him, Yeah, and not and not knowing what would have happened.
That's the thing they even they never knew. Yeah, so for the show
to do that, do it very briefly, but very incisively and insightfully and
in a way that didn't feel it didn't feel treaquily. It didn't feel like
that. You know, it's sort of like you were being manipulated or anything
like this, Like this was just so well done. Yeah, that's unbelievable.
Yeah, so, as I said, the importance of sticking the landing,
and they really really nailed it. So Yeah, for mine, it
was just yeah, where they give the baby the name and Yancey's wife saying,
I know what you want to I know, I know what you want
to do. Yeah. I just think that that's a very sweet thing.
What they do here is that you know, every siblings, there's always going
to be rivalries, right, and the position like Yancey is like the the
the copy cat, right, but it's like you realize he's copying because he
like he wants to be fright. Yeah, he looks up. It doesn't
look up to Fry, but it's like he's almost like jealous. But it's
like I wish I could be more like it's not so jealousy. It's like
I just wish I could be like that. Yeah. Yeah, And we
always have have fights and things, you know, if you've got a brother
or sister, because you've obviously I'm much older, but like I had a
sister with a similar age, and you have your fights and scrabbles, but
like at the end of the day that your brother or sister, Oh yeah,
absolutely, Yeah, yeah, I certainly squabbles with my sisters. But
no, after a while you realize that that's just that's some dumb bullshit.
Yeah, the important thing is that you're blood. I try to instill in
Alliott and Holly. It's just like, you guys need to be best friends,
you know what I mean. Look, don't try and force you guys
are friends. But it's like, go play with each other, go hang
out. You know, she will be the best thing you probably will ever
have, you know, Holli. But yeah, I also I like the
way they transition from past the present. Now apparently that form of storytelling is
a takeoff, not take off, but inspired by Godfather too. Oh yeah,
okay, well that's telling the two stories at the one time, running
parallel. Yeah. Yeah, and yeah, two timelines running, yeah,
fading into one, fading into one another and informing one another. Yeah,
that's that's definitely got Father too. I think the other thing that interested me
about this was we're so used to Fry being kind of hapless, yeah,
kind of fae of a better ter, a bit of a loser, and
to have him be the object of envy, yeah, is really interesting,
And I think that's something that maybe threw me for a loop for a while.
It's like, wait a minute, you know, isn't Fry goose?
Aren't we supposed to be sort of like making fun of them? Why is
it? Guy just want to be him? What's wrong with him that he
wants to be Philip Fry or be like him? And it explains because he
didn't know until he saw that statue. He didn't miss his family or anything
he missed. He might have missed them, but he didn't know how much
they respected him and loved him because they never really told him until he was
gone. They missed that opportunity. So when he looks back and he's like
in the pilot episode, he goes, oh, more friends and family they're
gone because he doesn't have he didn't know that they missed him like this.
Yeah. Yeah, and his mother was kind of a bitch. I was
like, I just sort of put off. I was like, well,
she's really just non caring. It's odd for the mother to be that way.
Not the dad. Well, the parents were kind of a nod bunch.
Yeah, I mean he was this survivalist, soul army. Yeah,
and she was just what not interesting, preoccupied with sport and all the time.
Yeah. I think the other thing that sort of derailed me a little
bit was you normally don't see an older sibling jealous of or wanting to emulate
a younger sibling all that much. It's normally the other way around, to
the best of my understanding, any of the best of my experience, unless
you're watching Numbers and Don Epps is jealous of Charlie Epps because of he's he's
a genius. You're enjoying Numbers that I was just on. Then sometimes I'm
like, hey, Niicol, like, can we finished the Equalizer tonight?
She's like, oh, when he got forty five minutes and me, can
we just watch the numbers? And I'm like when I finish. Yeah,
we finished it the other night, and I'm like, what a fucking good
movie. I'm like, I said to Nichola, you know what why I
like this better than John Wick spoiler I love John Wick right by John four
Wick four, I was like, oh, I'm kind of done now.
The Equalizer we only watched it for the first time number one. We finished
it yesterday day before. I'm like, he doesn't just go around killing people.
It's like they give you. It's like he's bad as atitud because John
just goes in just like fights people, where he just walks in and he's
not scared of anybody. Denzil Washington is so awesome in this role. And
I didn't realize it's an old TV show as well, but real I didn't
know it the TV show that's also a new TV show. Yeah, yeah,
we've queen the teeth in the roll. But yeah, oh god,
the originally it was awesome. It's pretty rare. Oh fuck your co I'm
like, Nicholas, we have to find the show. First of all,
have you never seen an episode of it at all never Okay, right now,
yeah, we've watched the first movie. That's it. I mean to
do this right now, going to use you and tie up equalizer theme music.
Okay, it is for eighties kids, probably as iconic and bad as
advice. My advice is a big one, isn't it? Equalizer theme A
tennis up dud. Dude, this is playing as he's equalizing people. No,
damn, you're really just really just tuned in for the for the opening
credits. Yes, that's so cool. But but we love the I just
love the way because, like I was saying, John Wick, he just
goes around killing people. He walks in. He's almost mute to right john
Wick. But this guy just like goes in and like when he was like
in the movie. He's obviously in the mood first movie when he goes in
there and stops like Antonio or whatever, and like they've got all this money
there and he starts handing out all the money to the people who are like
stuck there, working of all the elderly, and he's like, you go
home, now take ten game with you. I'm just like, what a
fucking badass? Oh yeah, Denzel was very very good casting. But yeah,
I mean something that's really rad, and I think they do it throughout
all the movies, is anytime that he knows that people have been in an
unequal situation, he won't just you know, settle up by fucking guys up.
He'll just really get not get in their face, but like you're just
scared of them. No, no, I won't what a bad us.
Yeah. Maybe in the first one is very much like all right, here's
ninety eight hundred dollars. Oh, you're gonna give me ten. I'm gonna
give you nine eight hundred dollars. Yeah, they're all giving him ship and
he's just like, all right, well, looks I'm going out of the
fuck you guys up. But yeah, there's one. Then the third one
is out of course you haven't seen it yet, but he's basically in Italy.
I sort of read me too much. No, no, no,
no, But of course shit needs equalizing. But there are these young punk
gangsters who are kind of like, who's this old man trying to give us
a grape? And Denzil just first of all, you know, he's sort
of don't don't, don't, don't tell me, I don't know what happens,
you know, gets upper hand on and then he's just sort of saying,
you're not going to do this anymore. You're not gonna be You're going
to fuck up anymore. No, no, no, no no. So
it's the Mandalorian when he gets those punks. Yeah it was. It was
a fat was Boba Fet could have been both had these really stupid that really
ship race that chase scene. Actually I look, I can't say anything about
because I tuned after one episode. Okay, there's there's there's like his punk
kids on the streets and they're like having like a pod race, like really
slow pods through the streets of like moss icley kind of. I'm just like
it'd be faster to run, and gives them ships. I think they give
Boba Fetts ship and Boba FET's just like motherfucker and then like he like he
basically no, I actually know what it was. I was annoyed because Boba
Fett didn't fight back, and I'm like the Boba Fett that I grew up
loving wouldn't be taking this ship. Also, if he's played by Jake the
Mask, you shouldn't be you should be anyway, anyway, you neighhod,
the thing from the Eagle and your life there is now at least eighty percent
better. I can't wait. But speaking of things not getting better, Tom
Kenny sit legend of voice acting, right, couldn't get any better. Here's
the voice of Yansy in this episode. Ah. Yes, voice of SpongeBob
and Dog and cat Dog and so many other things. Oh I love Tom
Kenning. Yes, he was part of the with Odenkirk missed the show crew.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, and his wife Jill Talley. He was
also the narrator of the video that they watched in the episode as well.
Yes, so Tom Kenny good get a flit legend? Yes, a few
factsbut the episodes is WHI. Before we get into a review of it,
So's sports obsessed mother, she notes the day Fried disappeared as the day that
Wisconsin won the Rose Bowl in seventeen to nine. This was indeed the outcome
of the real eighty six Rose Bowl game held in Pasadena, California on January
first, two thousand and Now. I have exactly two trivia questions. When
Bender is trying to get into the Ronco record vault, he Bart Simpson head
can be seen on the shelf in the background. The close up of the
manhole was the logo for the PJS. I think it's the second time the
mention pj's on this show. Who reciprocated by putting a picture of fry on
a milk carton on the show? The PJS was the Eddie Murphy Show,
Wasn't it was Eddie Murphy? Yeah? Yeah? Yeah? Should it no?
Because what was everybody hats Chris? Was Chris Rocks? Yes? There
was another one called Baba's Kids, which was by a comedian named Robin Harris
who Okay, he left us far too soon, but he was one of
the guys and oh I thought he was in a lot of good stuff.
But he was hilarious. I never watched the PJS. I don't think I
watched it because in the last like one season, yeah, and I don't
This was a stage where you know, there are only a few sort of
networks. Three seasons, forty four episodes, Okay, I don't recall ever
seeing it in Australia. It might have been on Foxtowl. I think it
was on Foxtail. Yeah, on Fox eight, But it wasn't like when
it stayed forever. It was like once it was on, they put on,
it got canceled, and that was just gone forever. Yeah, it
was a stop motion I think wasn't it? Was it? I'm pretty sure
stop motion. Let's have a look at that more time. The Pj's show.
The PJS is an American stop motion animated black sitcom, h there we
go, all right, And the translated alien language sign scene at the racetrack
says, for some reason, not without my egg case tonight on Lifetime.
Oh's my favorite robot. It's me, no one else look in this mirror.
Will be your favorite moments from the episode of Dames Well, I I've
got Daniel after was standing. Yes, I did enjoy that very much.
I like the letter's little jockey, Hey baby, if you do it in
a suitcase, and it's pretty good, not unfunny, and Bender's complete ignorance
of eighties pop culture. Every like well the Breakfast Club sandtrack. You mean
Breakfast Club Sandwich. I'm just like, oh, this guy's got an epic
soundtrack vinyl question, but it's me, it really is. I mean,
I was about to say, if you look behind you, listeners, if
I look behind me, I will see dan O's Wall of Vinyl. He's
got some legitimate classics all on vinyl. Tell what you got me for my
for Christmas? Yes, for Christmas. I like to think I added my
a little bit to the great Wall of Vinyl by giving Dando on Vinyl the
center track to the Michael Man movie Tangering Dream. Very impressed. I was
impressed you got one that didn't already have as well. I was happy about
that because you're like the receipts in the bag in case you don't want.
I was like, give me, I don't want this, you might already
have it, or you might Ah. I wanted the muppy Christmas can just
terribly, No, not at all. I really enjoyed speaking of good taste
noticeably Fat. Oh yeah, what a great name. Just the character in
general that rewind from your noticeably fat. I thought it was great, and
I really enjoyed Billy West finally getting to say Howard Stone is overrated because you
know, you know what happened there, right, refresh my memory. So
Billy Billy West wotton Howard's third for years, right, and then he fucked
Billy over by because how it was just you know how it's Howard and it's
all about shock jock stuff. And he had Billy on the show, and
Billy the voice of Friend and Stimpy. He wasn't the original voice. I
I believe Wren. The original voice of Wren was the guy who created the
show. John Yeah, yes, who had issues with the network, and
basically they were just like he had issues. Oh, and they came out
later on. Yes, the section was like underage girls and stuff. Yeah,
yeah, grooming. But this was before that. This is like in
the nineties. And he brought John kicked off the show, and he thought,
because he got kicked off the show, Billy should have gone with him.
And Billy's like, mother fuck it, I'm not going to quit.
Oh I need money, He's like, And so he became the voice of
Wren as well. They're like, what can you do? Ren? So
he became Wren and Stimpy as a result, and John hated him for it,
and he's like, slam bl blahlah blah. He wouldn't talk to Billy.
So Howard just basically got Billy on the show, and it just brought
John into the studio face to face and had them have their first face to
face confrontation live on the air. Oh, and it was just like Billy's
just sitting there and it's you can watch it's on YouTube. Goes like forty
minutes and it's the most awkward thing you ever watch. And Billy's just like
they're all ganging up on him, like, why would you do that to
him? Billy, wy would you do that to him? Billy's like,
I was just you know, I was just I edited a job. And
it's just like I feel you feel so sorry for Billy because Billy's like the
nicest guy. Yeah, I mean, look, it's it's show business,
not show friends, and so that this John guy not a good person.
Yeah, you can say sorry as much as you want. Thank you a
fuck mate. I'm always reminded. I know, I side the kids in
the hall a lot, but there was a there's a bit in this documentary
about them where their show is finished and they're like, oh, weh our
revenue is drying up. We've better go find other work. And Dave Foley,
one of the one of the members of the troupe, gets an audition
to be the lead on news radio and takes it and he's like, yeah,
look, I mean I've got to I've got to go do this.
I mean, I've got a family, I've got to go to make money
and all this kind of stuff. And well, the other guy sort of
ganged up on him a bit, and you know, he was, yeah,
I think they did something to kind of mess him around. And he
said, oh, and did you view that as did you view that a
betrayal? And he goes, I did so much view it as the betrayal.
Has realized that it actually was one, so like it's a way of
putting it. But yeah, I was just so glad that Billy finally,
how is that has overrated? I was like it would have been so you
would just loved that would be absolutely. I mean I used to not look
up to Howard's tern, but I was sort of like kind of inspired by
Howisted. It's like he was the first guy to kind of like make a
career out of just shocked jock but not necessarily always shocking. It was just
he's just a man that people almost wasn't he. Yeah, I think you'll
find a lot of people who don't necessarily respect everything that Howard Stern does.
Still say the guy knows broadcasting. Yeah, he's good at what he does,
even if what he does is kind of rank some of the time.
I mean, and then he get dickheads like Kyle Sandland who just try to
be shocking and it's like everything's manufactured, none of you, nothing about you
is real. Yeah, but how many times have you seen Kyle and Jack
you have been throwing off the air and I'm like, get fucked. Yeah,
but still even look, personally, I think that guy is cancer.
But when your whole stick is I'm a horrible person, what are you gonna
do about it? Like that's just the same. I kind of semi respect
that commitment to the bit because you're going to have. Of course, I
don't know what he's like personally, but I imagine, say I had no
scruples, I was going to like, I want to make a multi million
dollars in broadcasting or in radio whatever, or in boone podcasting even and I'm
going to do that by being shocking. And I'm the man you love to
hate or I can't believe he gets away with saying But when it comes across
like you're just trying to play to the character, it's just I'm just like,
because you know, you can't possibly be that much of a dig it's
like, ah, that's the thing. I mean, you're going to have
people who are It's like, you know that Ricky Gervais show extras, that
one where you know, he meets Bowie and Bowie just makes up. Oh
we're both in Schobas and Bowie makes up. It's like, oh, you're
a little fat man who sold your dream. You know, you're just doing
this shit show and I'm David Bowie. Imagine, yeah, if you were
just maybe if yours and lends him a David Bowie in the afterlife, or
you know, you're someone just super cool who maybe compromise some ways along the
way, but really was like, you're pretty fucking good. And it's like,
hey, we're in the same as we're not even playing the same fucking
sport. Sounds one of the highest paid people in Australia. Yeah, I
know, and that kind of sucks, having that degree of commitment to like,
all right, I suck. Everybody hates me, but you know,
I'm just gonna keep doing it because well, I like getting paid. It's
like okay, I mean I think in some stage I would just cash out
and just then I'd probably go live in Balley and what's it run a Scooba
shop? Was it we're talking about on this podcast? So that was on
a different podcast. Yeah, which I may or not even cut out.
There's a meaning to that. Yeah that. But anyway, hownset and I
got a bit of grudging respect because he had a lot of people say,
no, he's actually pretty good interviewer. Yeah, sayone's got no respectful.
I want to ask you a question, trivia, mister Davis. Hit me
with your first question one of two on the cover of the magazine of subs
in Michigan. Okay, what's the name of the magazine, col Warrior?
Okay you My first question is what would they win with the break dancing contest?
Oh? Man, I instantly thought of you. I was like,
I totally would have one of these something autographed. Damn it, I forgotten
autograph J Master, J parachute Pants. Oh my god, dear. Except
here's the thing. I don't think the members of Running Him, Save a
War Parish was confused. Yeah it is. Yeah, I mean Running Him
has got a very specific maybe that's it's like, why would you want this
sign? It's like getting there, Hey, ice Cube, do you want
to sign my copy? Of o g Original Gangs. That's ours t get
ice cube to sign a drink of ice tea? What is it? It's
it's what you say in this ice Q it's cube. What's the Simpsons one?
Where Simber Roger Moore? Who's James Bond se Counry Samper Roger Moore?
One other question is whose leg do they walk past in the cemetery? I
think I know this, but no I don't. Shacks leg shack? Okay.
One more question for you? What station is the end of the line?
Oh? Good question. I don't know. What is it? Newkirk
Avenue, Brooklyn? Okay. The original editor of The Luck of the Friarish
was March eleventh, two thousand and one. It was written by Ron Wiener
and Winer w E I n E R. Winer. I think it's win
Win although I'm here and a floppy speller? What's that? He wrote for
news radio? Oh? Okay, there we go. Full cycle theory of
a popcor figured this Gut Yes and directed by Chris Louden. The opening cartoon
Boom Boom from nine thirty six. Opening caption broadcasts simultaneously one year in the
future. It's not good either. Way, either you're a wiener or you're
a whiner. Would you rather be I'd rather be a winning wiener. My
wiener is often whining. Yes it is indeed, Yes, some attention.
Oh, that's too much attention. The episode kicks off with Old New York
and Brooklyn pre med Junior Hospital and it's the Birth of Fry. The dad's
reading the magazine. Mum's listening to the baseball she's excited because the Mets have
won, yes and namely after a Screwdriver. And Yancey's annoyed because it's Philip.
That's Wherehilip comes from. And Yancey is annoyed because you know, he's
not Philip. It's instantly from the very get go, he's just he's I
want, I want, and I get it. With kids, like,
for example, I've said it before, you can be fifty toys in that
four Oh yeah, and Allot be watching TV. Ho You'll pick up one
of those toys and Alliot it's like, I now want that toy. It's
like, why do I have brains? Why they whil like that? That's
really interesting and something we should probably look into it because it doesn't go away.
It's like you know the song I Want You Back. It's like you
break up with a girl and you see he with somebody else, like I
want to back now, it's like you didn't want it came out. Yeah,
Philip, until I find a suitable model of an ICBM, you'll have
to make do learning to fear this toy space crab. And Nancy then takes
the ship and throws out and of course that ship is what's on the painting.
At the end, we then transition to the present and they arrive at
Flushing Downs and basically it's just not going good for Fry, is it.
It is not. No, FRI's horse does incredibly bad. Amy's parents they
want to just to get the suitcase guy because they want to put the bet
on the best jockey ever. Do it in a suitcase I would be kind
of awkward. Well particularly I mean, I mean, if this jockey found
someone of similar stature, he could probably get a little busy in a in
a briefcase maybe, But no, Leila, Leila, no of size.
Should we say we have a centaur race? Will mentioning centaurs on our previous
podcast, one of the previous ones we did what was the center for Abart
brought March back to life as a centaur, but we did discussed minotaur.
We were discussing the centaurs and minotaurs. Yes. Leida then gives a kiss
for good luck with no tongue, and Fry loses again. And then Leila
and her we go for some food, which is horse fed horse double horse
juiced in goodness, horse pepsi okay nay. Bender then pretends to be a
horse so we can inject them with a coptonin and sedate them so they're all
really really tired and slow, and his horse will win. As I said,
all the horses are tied in the race, but Harry Trotter his horse,
he wins the race by an entire track. And now teach those other
horses to take drugs. Then the wind blows Fries one dollar into a machine,
which it refuses and it goes into the power line. You know,
I do anything for one dollar. Then Fry goes up to the to the
wires to get it. It looks like there's not really many gags happening.
Is there not a whole I no, I usually like it when I'm on
location somewhere like this. Usually remember the beach one, but it gets to
lexecuted with the rake and lends in the bin. That's one unlucky guy.
And then we cut back to the past and Frying Yancey here with the patent
space hook, got the skyhook, but Philip J. Fries got the space
hook yet he drives. He goes up with his patent space hook. Hey,
that's my patented space hook. You stole it. You're not the president
of it. Holy come only a seven leaf clover. I'm dying of old
age. Game over. Phil wins. Yancey's fans are stunned. There'll be
no celebration at the Antidome Lucky. Then Bendo arrives. He's really really happy.
He's he's got lots of lots of money. Someone's in a good mode.
I like that. And Fry he wants his clover back. He's like,
man, I'll be so much more lucky ever had this clover. And
you're telling them all about at it. And he gets his hair from hair
Robot. It's the first appearance of hair Robot. Really random robot and just
got hair of all the people. But he says that he hit it in
a secret hiding place and he didn't tell anybody where. It was not even
scruffy, and maybe it's still in the in the in the ground in Old
New York. So that's where they get the idea, let's go back there
and try and find this clover things. He's going to need someone who's going
to be really good at bending, so he asked leader, of course,
and bend up. We find out he's he's middle last and last time here
bend bending Rodriguez. Rodriguez. Speaking of Rodriguez, who was the that was
Gonzales in South Park? Yes, child, Yes, I'm having a lot
of fun with Z's today and Gonzalez they go down the sewer. This is
where we get the pj's reference on the on the what do they call the
manhole cover cover. Yes, whenever we walk over one of those, Ali
always says hello to the ninja turtles. It's a bit cute, it is.
Indeed, yes, and he falls, Well, he was fun.
We come back from commercial and that is roaming around Old New York and I
just got here. Imagine like you know, you fell to the fish and
you're like, I'm going back to old Geelong and it was just like as
it was a thousand years. It'd be so bizarre, wouldn't it. Oh
my god? Yeah, I imagine you can go back right now to like
seventies Galong, you know, and just walk around and it's and you literally
it's it's a it's a zombie zone. There's nothing there, but it's just
it's long in the seventies. What where do you think you would visit?
Oh? God, there's a place I used to go to nearly every Friday
called the Rhad Street Market. That was where was it where a couple of
doors down from where the New Pop Cup, well, the New Pop Culture
Store is, you know the okay yeah books bookstore? Yeah, and it
had it was, yeah, kind of like a bit of a secondhand place.
But the thing I've always what do they have? They had food?
I remember, I mean, why would you go to get something to eat?
Or no? No, I went there because they had a second hand
bookstore that they always had comics. Oh cool, And I would go and
yeah, look through their second comics. Oh I haven't had this one?
And yeah, so albody finds something you haven't got, yeah, collection,
like, oh I've heard about this one. I mean, God, bless
Margaret Mary. She would take me there on a Friday after school's done,
Like can'll get a read street make you just really well, you should just
sit in the car and read the papers. That was the video shop for
me. I'll just go to video shop, just browse. Yeah, so
that's the first place I would go. But then when they had like a
rotistory chicken play so I can smell smell of that. There was always some
like AM radio station playing and I just remember the just hearing like the easy
listening tunes of the ear and oh my happy place. So yeah, that's
where I go. So where would you go to the video store do you
think of? I'd probably go to the video stores when I was a kid.
That was my happy place. It sounds silly, but they were my
happy place, the video stores. Yeah, but the New York here the
city. Then Spider Casino in Vegas. You've never been in a Vegas?
Have you? I never have? You should go there one time? Good
fun, just mode, Yes, but where Fry yells a Howard Stern is
overrated and he takes the phone off the hook and he's's just trying to it's
just doing all the things he never usually could get away with. Tries jaywalking,
because oh Giuliani, that's a reference you don't want to really, Oh
God, the future is not being It's funny. He was like huge on
seign Feld and everything, like he was like it was like the Golden boy
man. I think he got very lucky because he was mayor around on September
eleven, wasn't he? And he was? Was he? I think he
was definitely married ninety eight when Seinfeld was on. Yeah, yeah, I
think he was kind of rude, as guys, he's cleaning up New York
and he's doing Right Bays, New Yorkers and all that stuff. I think
it might have been. Yeah, the September o. He was from ninety
four through to two thousand and one. December thirty first he was. He
left December thirty first, two thousand and one, Okay, yeah, because
I think just immediately post nine to eleven, it was He's America's mayor and
all this kind of stuff, and now he's just you know, this fucking
weirdo. Well and everyone now remembers him for doing that press conference at the
front of that store. Yeah, it was like next to a warmer place.
A little bit in the Barret movie where Yes, Dear Rudy name Cosmic,
why sat deep Space, Deep Space, get special moved face walk the
robot, the robot that's similar to mine, the zero G What are you
doing? You totally ripped off my routine? You calling me a biter?
Eric? Why do you always have to steal everything from me? Yancy?
Find your own life and live it. Stop feeling word Well, I'd like
to see you try to steal this the septuple headspin. He's just scratching.
No one's ever done more than a quadruple. Oh yeah, noticeably fat rewind
the tape, Crazy suck Fry. If I ever see you try anything that
crazy again, this crew might just have some new parasupids. Yeah, crazy
sucker. See with all of this, though, you sort of wonder how
does Fry become the Fry who ends up in the cryogenic container. He seems
like a bit of a This guy seems to have a handle on things.
We don't really see teenage years, do we. It's just like when he's
a kid, Well, how old is he meant to be here? Assuming
maybe like twelve ish? Oh gosh, no, I thought they were like
fifteen or sixteen or something. Maybe Okay, okay, probably yeah, So
I think that was maybe the issue I had early on with this. It's
like, yeah, this just seems out of character with lovable loser Fry when
it seems like this guy's kind of, you know, on an upward trajectory.
Yeah, because he had well, he wasn't carrying around he's like clover
anymore. Maybe that's okay, he knew where it was carrying around. Oh
yeah, okay, good point, good point. Yes, makes sense.
Okay, but it doesn't seem like a because he seems dumb, doesn't he
yes, well, not just like bad like it's like, he doesn't seem
dumb here, does he know? He seems like relatively switched on. Yeah,
but Neart tries to take the clover. Then back in the present,
about seventy first Street is where Fry realized I need to go back and try
and find that clover. So's I think it's seventy first Street where they lived,
needs to get downtown. So bender becomes the train watched closing doors in
England. It's mine the Gap, Mine the Gap. They arrive with a
homeless guy on the train as well, back in his old neighborhood, and
there's the bench where they found some shirts the fire hydrant where they burnt during
the summer, set on fire or something. And then this guy, the
bushy beard with his socialist newsletter and then it was poorly xerox. The mutant
then asks about Andy Goldman. Yeah, I mutated from him. Yes,
it seems nice on the neck. He seems nice when he's sober. Then
they find Friar's house and man father time surely took it back to this place
transition. It looks exactly mum. She puts into the greatest Mum mug,
which smashes the mug. She's just not a great mother at all. Kind
of explains why Fry never really felt loved. Makes sense to them. Yeah,
you can sense that his father would have been like disappointed in him because
he's not like the army guy. He's just the guy likes playing asteroids at
the pizza parlor. It does not. Yes, I mean we've all had
that moment, felt like we disappointed our father's right. Oh god, yeah,
I'm just like, Oh, I'm not a hunter who likes going and
doing man stuff. I'm just like I'd much rather stay home and watch Simpsons.
I'm not an AFL footballer. I am good brother. Watch The Simpsons.
Basically they're in the basement. Here is where Fry puts the clover into
the record of Vault, and he puts it into which soundtrack the sound track
of the Breakfast Club, Breakfast Club. Yes, can't wait till I'm old
enough to feel wha he's about stuff? Yeah, so you've got it one
day? Yeah, how old he is at this stage? Then what movie
came out with? Eighty seven? Yes? No, no, eighty five?
Eighty five? Okay that was old by that point. Yeah, because
they treat vinyl like it's an old It's funny how like vinyl? Now this
would be a cool collection, but in two thousand and one, where the
old things that parents have in their in their basement. Yeah, but he
puts it in the sleeve of Breakfast Club. They're now in the basement,
and like he says, their dads spent years turned this into a bomb shelder
and not a single nuclear or water waste. Then the Vault combo is three
and they open it up, but they can't get it open. So Bender
has to overcome the achilles heel of the design, which I don't know what
he does, but he rattles its basically opens it up and Fry finds the
soundtrack and as we get the benda gate here you mean sandwich and the clover
is gone, and he blames Y. Yes, he must have taken it.
And what what records you hold up here? Holds up here Lewis the
news sports. That's which rules. Fry then thinks that you must have had
he hated me, and obviously we find at the end he didn't. It
was a complete opposite. But Leela says, maybe you know, he just
didn't have time. Maybe you know, you just you just didn't discuss it
with him, you know. And then may find the statue of Yancey with
the clover. Well, I think it's Yantsy with the clover and his name.
He's the first person on mask he stopped. He stole my life.
I can understand why Fry would think this way. He's like, he stole
everything, so on my name, he saw my clover, he stole everything
about me. Was this an early example of the internet listening in as well?
That he was like the first thing that comes up. Do they do
they look him up online or something? Or I think that's coming up because
they see the video on him don't they Oh okay, yes, yes,
but they he patched it and now he broke my hand. They're now taking
a statue to the headquarters Planet Express. And you've got the best music at
the eddies, one amazing collection. What were the bands? Were the artists?
Survivor, Pat Benattar and the cars. I think of something you wouldn't
want to be stune by runs around in the desert. Oh, scorpions,
scorpions. Yes, Fry are still angry though he took my dream of going
into space. You went there this morning to get donuts. There we get
the internet browser and I heard them say, fright, and this is what
you're Yeah, he said Fry, He's found a video and also goot Friday
calendar and ordered some French fries. Philip J. Frye astronaut, philanthropist,
entrepreneur, was a great man, truly worthy of narration. Fry was the
first man on Mars, a feat that has never since been equal. That
should have been me, The ever lucky Fry made his fortune after striking oil
in the bathroom of the mansion he had won in a lottery. That's my
clover yancey stolen after a whirlwind fling with Icelandic supermodel jord Fry scored a string
of top ten hits with his rock band Leaf Seven, known for their hypnotic
rhythms, driving baselines and memorable hooks. That's what I'm known for. Phil
came in right strummed out this tune. Yeah, and I said, that's
the number one record today. Fry spends most of his time in his grave
at Orbiting Meadows National Cemetery, buried with the trademark seven Leaf clover that will
bring him luck in the next life, perhaps some Egyptians believe. So that's
where my clover is. Hey, is that orbiting cemetery near here? It
will be in a couple hours. Good Leila Bender, we're going grave robbing.
I'll get my kit. Then we get another flashback and Yancey is there
in his in his tuxedo getting ready for was his wedding. Yes, yeah,
he's got a camouflage tux on because his dad's I think. And I
just wish my brother was around to see this. And everyone actually misses him.
The mother not so much, but like definitely Yancy, Yeah, absolutely,
And Yancy goes rummaging through the records. He wants to find some music
for the wedding. And he goes through the box and he finds a white
fish flag. Now this is back to a reference of when fries like go
white Fish, because remember are on the pier that's right of the cones which
are yes. We know the are yes condoms that have been used. Then
he sees the picture Phil Rocket drawing age twenty and he keeps it. I'm
like, that's going to mean something, and I can't remember what it is,
and I was so glad I didn't remember, because I've got to experience
it again for the first time. Then he he opens up the vaults and
he gets the Breakfast Club. This is too clear at the reception at the
end of the day, hang you shit on on the Breakfast Club soundtrack.
I'm trying to remember what else is on the breath Club soundtrack? Forget about
me. Don't look it up, and you tell me these are absolute bangers,
certified bangers or certified snores? All right, but the opposite is it
breakfast Club soundtrack? Give me yeah, you're an all right? So let's
get it up. The wiki page Let's Get It Up was actually the working
title of Marve and Guys let's get it on, and the record going to
be like we got to do that. Let's get it on. Everyone can
enjoy it. That's much better, So don't you forget about me? Track
one very important to have the big one banger on the get go it is
and already put it on. It's like, yeah, it's a breafast club
right. Track to Waiting by Elizabeth Daily. I don't know it, but
you know it's. Well, it's Elizabeth Daily. It's it's the voice of
Babe. Yes, yes, fire in the Twilight Wang Chun, it was
Wang Chung. It's because every dy Wang Chung tonight they sing turning Japanese.
No, that's the vapors as a vapors. Wang Chung is everybody have fun
tonight, everybody Wang Chung tonight. Yeah, I'm the dude. Keith Force
for so s e y forcy Oh oh yeah, I'm the dude. Yeah,
I don't know. Heart Too Hot, Too Hold by Jesse Johnson and
Stephanie Sproul. Well that sounds just the most eighties thing ever. Yeah.
Dream Montage by Gary Change. We Are Not Alone by Carla DeVito. Is
that like who performing meat Loaf? Yeah? Yeah, I'll say this for
John Hughes movies. I think a lot of them made pretty well, but
they always had really great sound tracks and a fantastic taste in like getting John
Williams for Home Alone. Yeah, but English new wave stuff always. You
always put great songs in his soundtracks. Yeah, even if I don't remember
half of these. The reggae Keith Force, didn't I tell you, Joyce
Kennedy and love theme Keith. I think Keith. I feel like Keith Force
is probably maybe that's like he's music. Maybe he's like score, I think
so. Yeah, Yeah, because Sarry Gary Chang's a soundtrack composer, He's
done a bunch of this. Okay, maybe it's a lot of us just
music. Yeah. Anyway, I think people generally remember don't you Forget about
Me from there during the freeze frame at the end. But yes, so
he's grabbed that record out and try and clear out the reception, and this
is where the clover falls out and we come back to the present time and
they arrive at the cemetery and he's been buried in the world hero section.
They salute as they enter. Bender just used the shuffle to his head,
so they what past the various things like Shak's leg and two of the unknown
comic. Then Bender is digging up that John larn Catt's spine, John Larry
Keett Laryn Kett. Who's John Lary Kett? John Larrickket's an actor who was
on night Court? Okay, the original night Court, and that's the one
that takes off the recent reboot, the one that Kramer takes off when he's
been the detective. Is that night Court? I don't think so. What
was the show when he's like the guy they think that he stole the vas
or whatever it was off the off Oh god, no, I've forgotten Anyway,
a bit about John Larrachett, just quickly. He's a very tall dude
who generally plays sort of sardonic, sarcastic guys. Night Court was probably his
best known role. I think he had a couple of sitcoms and like named
after him. He might have been the lead in like a very short lived
or even killed it killed from the very beginning it was Dragnet. Dragnet.
Oh yeah, remake of American remake of Faulty Towers. Okay, there was
an American remake of Faulty Towers. I think so, Yeah, I don't
think it actually went anywhere. I remember they're going to like reboot that recently,
and then I was like, oh, John Cliss, Yeah right,
it would be the most like homophobic and I'm just like, maybe just let
him make it first. Yeah. But fun fun fact about John Larrickett.
He narrated the opening sequence of the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Shit, yeah
you want he spine on your collection, and wouldn't you? Absolutely, But
Fry He's now at the grave of the original Martian and he thinks, obviously
it's it's Yancy and it's clovering time. Clovering time, you should say yes,
which is a takeoff of which superhero that's the thing from the Fantastic Four.
He'd always say it's clobing time. He should sure would? They start
digging, and Fry notices some moss on the on the gravestone away. He
starts reading it flashback and it's now now it's where the tears start. So
it's Yancey and he's got his baby, and he gives his baby the clover
because once blonde to someone very special, and you're like, oh, wait
a minute, wait a minute, what's happening here. And then as you
were saying, his wife's I know you want to call me names h Philip
J. Fry and he puts him down in the bedroom and I see the
fucking picture on the wall and it's like, oh my god, this is
so sad but so beautiful at the same time. It's not sad. It's
a sad because it's just lovely. It's sad. It's it's sad because he
never got to tell Fry what he thought. But now Fry knows because like
I said, that's not sad, but it's just sad that Yancey's life he
never got to experience it, but Fry knows. And he named for his
uncle to carry on his spirit. And it's like, how fucking beautiful is
it? It's a very nice It's what you want on you to mton Like
this is up there with like Simpson's episodes, like You've got like a Maggie
Make three where it's like do it for her. This is this is their
version of do it for her. It really is. Yeah, it's yeah,
I'm much more to say, it's very sweet. Bender then gets the
cloth so he's still digging, so Fry is not really paying attention. He
found the corpse, and the corpse a little bit and he's got the the
clover and the wedding ring. Sorry, ladies, taken, I love it.
So you're going to rough up the corpse a little bitter, yeah,
but one part of me was like, I wish they didn't dig up the
body. But then I guess then in that moment, so Fry could put
the clover back yes on. But it's like the idea of looking at the
corpse of yeah, true, yeah, but but yeah, so Leila and
Benagraph who gets do some more digging because he once go short of the mousketier
of Union, and Fry puts the clover back on on Fry on Phillips and
his corpse. Becauesse you could say, as don't you forget about Me?
Plays in the back as we pan out, and it's just, yeah,
the perfect ending. It's a really really great ending, a perfect ending,
right, it certainly is. I mean, it's a fantastic last I don't
know what three to five minutes, the last two minutes of particularly just like
whoa. Yeah, as I said, it makes it makes the whole episode
feel special. It does, which yeah, I would sort of had mixed
feelings throughout the episode. I mean, looking at it in hindsight, it's
like, look, a lot of it is still it could have been done
a bit better, but it's all in service of just a really really really
really great ending, one that just makes you feel all the feelings. Yes,
and so it's worth it. Yeah. I mean sometimes you have to
have that trade off if you think kind of made it somewhat mundane just to
sort of make the end. Yeah, I reckon that could be the case.
And that's a real gamble, isn't it. Because you don't want to
make this this is a sweet emotional story like of a sibling, right that
you don't have to You want to make it sci fi and crazy. You
didn't have too many characters in it was just you know, the main three.
You want to keep it ground. Absolutely. It also shows the importance
of having faith in the show that has warranted it up until this point.
I mean there's Featuruma hasn't done to too many bad episodes up unto this point.
So I think you can look at and go, Okay, look I'll
give these guys, I'll trust these guys. Yeah, And even if I'm
not sure exactly where they're taking me. It means you might think, think,
you know, everyone's winning street breaks sometimes, but even you know,
with everything that's taken into account here, everything this episode has that maybe isn't
quite right. The fact that it gets this bit so right, yeah makes
it a really good episode. Oh, great episode. Yeah, one of
my favorites there. So I was just looking up here the episode one and
Any Award for Outstanding Individual Achievement for Writing in Animated Television Production. How did
this not win the Emmy? Yeah, it must have been some must have
been some great episodes, I imagine, so, but yeah, one of
my favorite episodes of Futurama. And I'm just I can't believe as such a
big future of a fan that I forgot about the painting on the wall like
that was just like so great to be able to experience that that again.
