266 | Fighting for CCPT: How to Advocate for Child-Centered Play Therapy in Sexual Abuse Cases and Trauma Work

Play Therapy Podcast: A Master-Class in Child-Centered Play Therapy

In this episode, I answer a question from Lisa in Maryland about the role of Child-Centered Play Therapy (CCPT) in cases involving trauma and sexual behavior. Many legal and child protection systems lean toward directive interventions, often dismissing CCPT. However, research overwhelmingly supports CCPT as an effective, developmentally appropriate approach for helping children process trauma in a safe and natural way. I discuss how we, as play therapists, can advocate for the model, educate stakeholders, and navigate the challenges of working with children who have experienced trauma.

I also highlight key research, including Landreth and Homeyer's work on play behaviors in sexually abused children, and emphasize the importance of trusting the CCPT process. When we create a space where children feel safe, they will process their experiences in their own way and time—without the retraumatization of forced disclosures. If you've ever wondered how to defend CCPT in trauma cases or how to recognize post-trauma play in your sessions, this episode is for you.

00:00:00,439 --> 00:00:04,320
You're listening to the Play Therapy Podcast with Dr. Brenna Hicks,

1
00:00:04,480 --> 00:00:08,189
your source for centered and focused play therapy coaching.

2
00:00:08,560 --> 00:00:08,680
Hi,

3
00:00:08,760 --> 00:00:09,760
I'm Dr. Brenna Hicks,

4
00:00:09,770 --> 00:00:10,520
The Kid Counselor.

5
00:00:10,600 --> 00:00:12,560
This is the Play Therapy Podcast where you get

6
00:00:12,560 --> 00:00:14,850
a master class in child-centered play therapy

7
00:00:15,159 --> 00:00:17,299
and practical support and application for your

8
00:00:17,299 --> 00:00:18,989
work with children and their families.

9
00:00:19,510 --> 00:00:20,329
In today's episode,

10
00:00:20,420 --> 00:00:23,319
I am answering a question from Lisa in Maryland.

11
00:00:23,959 --> 00:00:25,959
But before I get into that,

12
00:00:26,229 --> 00:00:27,030
a couple of,

13
00:00:27,239 --> 00:00:27,440
well,

14
00:00:27,559 --> 00:00:29,819
one housekeeping item and one update.

15
00:00:30,239 --> 00:00:30,709
So,

16
00:00:31,440 --> 00:00:33,509
housekeeping item is

17
00:00:33,759 --> 00:00:36,270
all of you all that are all y'all,

18
00:00:36,959 --> 00:00:38,849
if you're from Ohio and the

19
00:00:39,279 --> 00:00:40,119
surrounding areas,

20
00:00:40,270 --> 00:00:41,040
yuns.

21
00:00:41,849 --> 00:00:44,200
If you are going to

22
00:00:44,409 --> 00:00:45,799
be in Mississippi

23
00:00:46,049 --> 00:00:47,450
in 2 weekends,

24
00:00:47,569 --> 00:00:48,020
21st,

25
00:00:48,130 --> 00:00:48,889
22nd,

26
00:00:49,569 --> 00:00:52,159
you better RSVP to my meetup,

27
00:00:52,369 --> 00:00:52,650
y'all,

28
00:00:52,770 --> 00:00:53,279
for real.

29
00:00:53,330 --> 00:00:54,599
The Atlanta meetup,

30
00:00:54,930 --> 00:00:56,000
the last 4 days,

31
00:00:56,130 --> 00:00:57,520
like 10 of you signed up,

32
00:00:57,650 --> 00:01:02,490
and that makes it really hard to plan and really hard to reserve and blah blah blah.

33
00:01:02,590 --> 00:01:02,880
So

34
00:01:03,090 --> 00:01:04,160
throw me a bone here.

35
00:01:04,410 --> 00:01:06,769
Don't be last minute if you are going to the

36
00:01:06,769 --> 00:01:10,410
conference and or you are in driving distance of Oxford,

37
00:01:10,449 --> 00:01:11,199
Mississippi.

38
00:01:11,639 --> 00:01:12,860
And you're gonna come to the meetup.

39
00:01:13,029 --> 00:01:13,980
Will you please

40
00:01:14,230 --> 00:01:15,059
RSVP?

41
00:01:15,190 --> 00:01:16,389
There's a link in the show notes.

42
00:01:16,510 --> 00:01:17,540
I need a headcount.

43
00:01:17,699 --> 00:01:18,339
We're

44
00:01:18,709 --> 00:01:19,709
making a reservation.

45
00:01:19,870 --> 00:01:20,669
I can't have y'all,

46
00:01:20,910 --> 00:01:21,220
I mean,

47
00:01:21,349 --> 00:01:21,470
look,

48
00:01:21,550 --> 00:01:22,959
I would love it if y'all just show up,

49
00:01:23,069 --> 00:01:24,589
but I need to know you're coming,

50
00:01:24,660 --> 00:01:25,540
so please

51
00:01:25,830 --> 00:01:26,349
just let me know.

52
00:01:26,430 --> 00:01:28,099
RSVP that'd be really helpful.

53
00:01:28,550 --> 00:01:28,980
OK.

54
00:01:29,199 --> 00:01:29,470
Now,

55
00:01:29,699 --> 00:01:30,139
update.

56
00:01:31,180 --> 00:01:32,489
I don't know if you all remember and I

57
00:01:32,489 --> 00:01:35,440
answered Jatsna's question from India a while back,

58
00:01:35,769 --> 00:01:37,760
probably back in maybe November or December.

59
00:01:37,809 --> 00:01:39,199
I answered that on episode,

60
00:01:39,400 --> 00:01:40,849
and hers was about

61
00:01:41,250 --> 00:01:42,839
the child that like came in,

62
00:01:42,889 --> 00:01:43,610
laid down,

63
00:01:43,849 --> 00:01:44,639
read a book,

64
00:01:44,889 --> 00:01:47,199
and then said he wanted to destroy everything.

65
00:01:47,769 --> 00:01:48,970
If you remember that episode.

66
00:01:49,989 --> 00:01:51,790
She sent me a follow-up email,

67
00:01:51,809 --> 00:01:54,849
which I want to give you an update because I don't always

68
00:01:54,849 --> 00:01:58,699
hear what happens with kids after I cover a case on an

69
00:01:59,089 --> 00:01:59,720
episode.

70
00:02:00,129 --> 00:02:00,800
So,

71
00:02:00,809 --> 00:02:01,839
she wrote back

72
00:02:02,050 --> 00:02:02,599
and said,

73
00:02:02,690 --> 00:02:03,730
thanks for addressing my question.

74
00:02:03,779 --> 00:02:04,569
It was useful.

75
00:02:04,970 --> 00:02:06,080
You'll be happy to know

76
00:02:06,250 --> 00:02:09,250
that I did set limits as the toys were in danger.

77
00:02:09,369 --> 00:02:11,038
So if you remember in that episode,

78
00:02:11,330 --> 00:02:11,839
I said,

79
00:02:11,929 --> 00:02:12,089
you know,

80
00:02:12,179 --> 00:02:13,240
if at any point

81
00:02:13,479 --> 00:02:15,770
there is a concern for the child safety,

82
00:02:15,809 --> 00:02:16,320
your safety,

83
00:02:16,369 --> 00:02:17,449
or the toys getting damaged,

84
00:02:17,490 --> 00:02:18,330
you do need to set a limit,

85
00:02:18,339 --> 00:02:18,949
blah blah.

86
00:02:19,029 --> 00:02:19,770
So she says,

87
00:02:19,809 --> 00:02:23,080
you'll be happy to know that I did set a limit as the toys were in danger.

88
00:02:23,850 --> 00:02:24,449
But since then,

89
00:02:24,490 --> 00:02:26,919
he has discovered boxing a sponge pillow.

90
00:02:27,479 --> 00:02:28,160
Last week,

91
00:02:28,330 --> 00:02:33,410
15 rounds with me having to keep a running commentary on his athletic prowess.

92
00:02:34,750 --> 00:02:35,779
Oh my goodness,

93
00:02:35,910 --> 00:02:36,839
I love it.

94
00:02:37,190 --> 00:02:37,580
So,

95
00:02:37,789 --> 00:02:38,080
first of all,

96
00:02:38,309 --> 00:02:38,529
Jota,

97
00:02:38,589 --> 00:02:39,699
thank you for the update.

98
00:02:40,149 --> 00:02:41,940
But this is how

99
00:02:42,229 --> 00:02:43,289
the pendulum swings,

100
00:02:43,320 --> 00:02:43,550
y'all,

101
00:02:43,690 --> 00:02:44,070
right?

102
00:02:44,229 --> 00:02:44,580
So,

103
00:02:44,789 --> 00:02:45,320
I come in,

104
00:02:45,389 --> 00:02:46,259
I lay down,

105
00:02:46,470 --> 00:02:46,899
I

106
00:02:47,110 --> 00:02:48,100
choose to read a book,

107
00:02:48,350 --> 00:02:49,500
don't want to do anything.

108
00:02:49,869 --> 00:02:50,630
Then when I decide,

109
00:02:50,720 --> 00:02:50,910
OK,

110
00:02:50,990 --> 00:02:52,220
I do want to do something,

111
00:02:52,470 --> 00:02:54,389
it's complete destruction and mayhem.

112
00:02:55,449 --> 00:02:56,210
And

113
00:02:56,460 --> 00:02:57,389
I don't know if you remembered,

114
00:02:57,500 --> 00:02:58,490
but he walked,

115
00:02:58,699 --> 00:02:59,809
as he walked out of the room,

116
00:02:59,899 --> 00:03:02,820
he kicked blocks and he was throwing toys,

117
00:03:02,899 --> 00:03:03,770
all kinds of stuff.

118
00:03:04,229 --> 00:03:04,779
So

119
00:03:05,179 --> 00:03:05,770
now

120
00:03:06,029 --> 00:03:09,339
he has realized that he can build his self-confidence and

121
00:03:09,339 --> 00:03:12,570
get all of his esteem work with boxing a pillow,

122
00:03:12,740 --> 00:03:14,850
and now 15 rounds

123
00:03:15,300 --> 00:03:16,889
providing commentary

124
00:03:17,300 --> 00:03:18,710
on his athletic prowess.

125
00:03:18,779 --> 00:03:19,440
Oh my gosh,

126
00:03:19,539 --> 00:03:20,380
kids are awesome.

127
00:03:20,899 --> 00:03:21,300
OK.

128
00:03:21,750 --> 00:03:22,279
So,

129
00:03:22,289 --> 00:03:23,919
let's get back to

130
00:03:24,169 --> 00:03:24,880
the new

131
00:03:25,410 --> 00:03:26,759
question that we're going to answer.

132
00:03:27,050 --> 00:03:27,190
So,

133
00:03:27,199 --> 00:03:28,089
this is Lisa,

134
00:03:28,130 --> 00:03:30,720
which is a pseudonym she asked not to be named,

135
00:03:30,970 --> 00:03:32,160
but she's in Maryland.

136
00:03:33,009 --> 00:03:35,169
And the question is,

137
00:03:35,619 --> 00:03:38,369
can you speak to CCPT and trauma

138
00:03:38,779 --> 00:03:39,449
or

139
00:03:39,779 --> 00:03:41,050
sexual behavior?

140
00:03:41,580 --> 00:03:44,570
The emphasis in the field seems to be on directive work,

141
00:03:44,610 --> 00:03:48,820
and I've even heard reported from parents that legal throws out CCPT.

142
00:03:49,899 --> 00:03:53,059
How can we support these families when it comes to disclosures,

143
00:03:53,259 --> 00:03:54,179
post trauma play,

144
00:03:54,190 --> 00:03:54,619
etc.

145
00:03:55,740 --> 00:03:55,960
All right,

146
00:03:56,039 --> 00:03:58,220
I'm actually really happy about this question.

147
00:03:59,350 --> 00:04:00,229
So,

148
00:04:00,630 --> 00:04:00,949
yes,

149
00:04:01,029 --> 00:04:01,979
historically,

150
00:04:02,429 --> 00:04:06,059
legal arenas are very anti-CCPT in general.

151
00:04:06,389 --> 00:04:10,410
They're specifically anti-CCPT for sexual abuse,

152
00:04:10,750 --> 00:04:11,259
trauma,

153
00:04:11,550 --> 00:04:12,250
physical abuse,

154
00:04:12,429 --> 00:04:13,029
any

155
00:04:13,429 --> 00:04:15,669
kind of intervention along those lines.

156
00:04:16,778 --> 00:04:18,289
And that's just,

157
00:04:18,579 --> 00:04:18,759
uh,

158
00:04:18,769 --> 00:04:20,988
that's a broken system with broken process,

159
00:04:21,088 --> 00:04:22,938
but that's for another discussion.

160
00:04:23,049 --> 00:04:23,368
So

161
00:04:23,878 --> 00:04:24,199
anyway,

162
00:04:24,368 --> 00:04:27,968
we do know that historically CCPT has not been

163
00:04:28,209 --> 00:04:30,229
really valued in the courts

164
00:04:30,528 --> 00:04:36,199
and typically it does get dismissed in any kind of trauma or abuse scenarios.

165
00:04:36,609 --> 00:04:37,239
However,

166
00:04:37,528 --> 00:04:38,699
we have evidence.

167
00:04:39,350 --> 00:04:40,619
oozing out of

168
00:04:40,869 --> 00:04:42,459
journals and research,

169
00:04:42,890 --> 00:04:47,820
talking about how effective CCPT is with kids with a history of trauma,

170
00:04:48,260 --> 00:04:50,890
history of sexual or physical abuse and ACEs.

171
00:04:51,190 --> 00:04:51,390
So,

172
00:04:51,410 --> 00:04:51,690
oh,

173
00:04:51,709 --> 00:04:53,899
and maybe that might not be an international term.

174
00:04:54,070 --> 00:04:55,940
So adverse childhood experiences.

175
00:04:57,119 --> 00:04:57,829
So

176
00:04:58,140 --> 00:05:00,609
here's where we are with this.

177
00:05:00,940 --> 00:05:03,329
We know that CCPC works.

178
00:05:03,420 --> 00:05:04,049
We know

179
00:05:04,220 --> 00:05:06,890
that we have resources at our disposal

180
00:05:07,339 --> 00:05:08,059
to

181
00:05:08,500 --> 00:05:10,029
provide information

182
00:05:10,380 --> 00:05:11,209
to parents

183
00:05:11,579 --> 00:05:13,049
about what they can expect

184
00:05:13,420 --> 00:05:15,540
when children are in CCPT.

185
00:05:16,450 --> 00:05:17,940
Post-trauma or abuse.

186
00:05:18,579 --> 00:05:19,369
We also

187
00:05:19,579 --> 00:05:21,480
have access to reports

188
00:05:21,779 --> 00:05:23,970
that are not necessarily reports research

189
00:05:24,299 --> 00:05:26,200
that allows us to

190
00:05:27,029 --> 00:05:28,670
Know what we can look for

191
00:05:28,790 --> 00:05:29,640
in play.

192
00:05:30,630 --> 00:05:32,480
That has been extremely helpful.

193
00:05:32,730 --> 00:05:35,959
And if you are not familiar with what we typically use,

194
00:05:36,049 --> 00:05:39,000
what I talk about in the collective a lot in the coaching programs,

195
00:05:39,320 --> 00:05:40,640
Landreth and Homeyer.

196
00:05:42,190 --> 00:05:42,980
Published

197
00:05:43,149 --> 00:05:44,149
in '94,

198
00:05:44,200 --> 00:05:44,549
so I mean,

199
00:05:44,670 --> 00:05:44,850
look,

200
00:05:44,910 --> 00:05:45,079
we're,

201
00:05:45,149 --> 00:05:46,720
we're talking decades

202
00:05:46,989 --> 00:05:48,570
of this being in existence.

203
00:05:49,230 --> 00:05:51,579
Play therapy behaviors of sexually abused children.

204
00:05:52,420 --> 00:05:54,660
And that is a really helpful

205
00:05:55,510 --> 00:05:58,179
resource for us so that we know what

206
00:05:58,429 --> 00:06:02,679
we are looking for and what we can expect and how it might unfold in play sessions,

207
00:06:02,720 --> 00:06:03,149
etc.

208
00:06:04,029 --> 00:06:04,269
So,

209
00:06:04,309 --> 00:06:04,670
Lisa,

210
00:06:04,790 --> 00:06:07,140
to speak a little bit more specifically to your question,

211
00:06:08,399 --> 00:06:08,910
It

212
00:06:09,079 --> 00:06:11,329
is really about advocating for the model.

213
00:06:12,350 --> 00:06:13,750
It's about helping

214
00:06:14,230 --> 00:06:15,059
stakeholders,

215
00:06:15,190 --> 00:06:16,420
meaning parents,

216
00:06:17,149 --> 00:06:17,869
teachers,

217
00:06:18,029 --> 00:06:18,510
judges,

218
00:06:18,559 --> 00:06:19,269
guardians,

219
00:06:19,309 --> 00:06:19,790
attorneys,

220
00:06:19,869 --> 00:06:20,709
whomever,

221
00:06:21,390 --> 00:06:26,059
realize that this is such a sensitive and tricky scenario in the first place

222
00:06:26,549 --> 00:06:28,940
that if a child feels forced or pushed,

223
00:06:29,390 --> 00:06:31,220
they're going to recoil and shut down.

224
00:06:32,040 --> 00:06:36,059
And obviously the goal is not only the child is able to

225
00:06:36,510 --> 00:06:37,660
let someone know

226
00:06:37,890 --> 00:06:38,829
if and

227
00:06:39,149 --> 00:06:40,390
when something happened.

228
00:06:41,200 --> 00:06:44,619
But also that they can process it and heal appropriately

229
00:06:45,149 --> 00:06:47,540
and forcing a child to

230
00:06:48,230 --> 00:06:51,470
show what happened on an anatomically correct doll or

231
00:06:51,470 --> 00:06:53,899
forcing a child to go through a forensic interview

232
00:06:54,309 --> 00:06:58,040
or forcing a child to sit down and talk about good touch bad touch

233
00:06:58,429 --> 00:07:01,820
or forcing a child to answer questions

234
00:07:02,200 --> 00:07:02,640
about who,

235
00:07:02,649 --> 00:07:02,829
what,

236
00:07:02,839 --> 00:07:03,059
when,

237
00:07:03,070 --> 00:07:03,250
where,

238
00:07:03,269 --> 00:07:04,100
how and why

239
00:07:04,549 --> 00:07:05,589
you can see

240
00:07:05,869 --> 00:07:08,350
how not only re-traumatizing that is.

241
00:07:08,850 --> 00:07:11,100
But also it's not developmentally appropriate.

242
00:07:11,329 --> 00:07:12,440
Kids are not verbal,

243
00:07:12,690 --> 00:07:13,839
they're not rational,

244
00:07:14,170 --> 00:07:15,399
they're not cognitive.

245
00:07:16,480 --> 00:07:20,109
They have to experience and feel their way through things,

246
00:07:20,440 --> 00:07:22,589
not think and talk their way through things.

247
00:07:23,170 --> 00:07:25,040
So everything about the quote system,

248
00:07:25,079 --> 00:07:27,290
I'm air quoting because as I mentioned before,

249
00:07:27,320 --> 00:07:29,070
I think it's extremely broken.

250
00:07:29,750 --> 00:07:31,070
Everything about the system

251
00:07:31,359 --> 00:07:33,820
is wired to work with adults,

252
00:07:34,279 --> 00:07:35,839
is not wired to work with children.

253
00:07:36,600 --> 00:07:37,470
I've had

254
00:07:37,760 --> 00:07:38,119
many,

255
00:07:38,160 --> 00:07:39,350
many clients

256
00:07:39,809 --> 00:07:41,149
tell me horror stories

257
00:07:41,399 --> 00:07:46,239
of what it was like when the sheriffs or the police or the

258
00:07:46,720 --> 00:07:49,910
investigators show up and what the process was like when

259
00:07:50,279 --> 00:07:52,309
children were asked what happened.

260
00:07:52,720 --> 00:07:54,600
I've heard horror stories of what the medical

261
00:07:54,600 --> 00:07:57,230
exams that were forced on these kids were like

262
00:07:57,559 --> 00:07:59,920
to confirm or deny abuse.

263
00:08:00,690 --> 00:08:00,989
Uh,

264
00:08:01,170 --> 00:08:01,799
we're we're just,

265
00:08:01,809 --> 00:08:05,160
we're not doing justice and we're not doing right by children.

266
00:08:05,410 --> 00:08:08,730
So the age appropriate developmentally appropriate

267
00:08:09,170 --> 00:08:10,000
approach to this

268
00:08:10,570 --> 00:08:11,829
is CCPT.

269
00:08:12,049 --> 00:08:12,480
Why?

270
00:08:12,989 --> 00:08:13,420
Because

271
00:08:13,769 --> 00:08:17,079
we honor that a child is not going to want to talk about it.

272
00:08:17,329 --> 00:08:18,970
They're not going to want to think about it.

273
00:08:19,029 --> 00:08:22,809
They're not going to want to have conversations and answer questions about it.

274
00:08:23,980 --> 00:08:25,700
But they will absolutely work through it.

275
00:08:26,859 --> 00:08:27,959
And so

276
00:08:28,089 --> 00:08:31,850
we want parents to understand that all other stakeholders to understand that

277
00:08:32,130 --> 00:08:34,760
and we have evidence that it is effective.

278
00:08:34,929 --> 00:08:37,479
So this isn't I'm trying to sell you a bill of goods here,

279
00:08:37,690 --> 00:08:40,119
this is I will just show you the research

280
00:08:40,369 --> 00:08:40,760
that

281
00:08:41,058 --> 00:08:42,479
proves its efficacy.

282
00:08:43,090 --> 00:08:45,609
We have empirically supported data.

283
00:08:46,239 --> 00:08:46,710
That

284
00:08:46,919 --> 00:08:48,030
this is effective

285
00:08:48,359 --> 00:08:49,599
and it's age appropriate,

286
00:08:49,719 --> 00:08:51,429
so any other intervention

287
00:08:51,880 --> 00:08:53,590
you're running the risk

288
00:08:53,919 --> 00:08:56,919
of children recoiling backpedaling,

289
00:08:57,150 --> 00:08:57,950
closing,

290
00:08:58,369 --> 00:08:59,429
shutting down,

291
00:09:00,000 --> 00:09:02,309
never wanting to bring anything up again

292
00:09:02,719 --> 00:09:05,830
because it's overwhelming and scary and too much for them.

293
00:09:07,119 --> 00:09:07,929
I've had

294
00:09:08,559 --> 00:09:09,869
quite a few children

295
00:09:10,039 --> 00:09:11,150
who have played out

296
00:09:11,479 --> 00:09:12,049
trauma,

297
00:09:12,219 --> 00:09:15,190
sexual abuse or physical abuse in play sessions with me.

298
00:09:15,760 --> 00:09:16,760
You always know it.

299
00:09:17,809 --> 00:09:19,330
That there is never a question.

300
00:09:20,500 --> 00:09:20,859
And,

301
00:09:20,869 --> 00:09:21,150
and I'm,

302
00:09:21,229 --> 00:09:23,090
I'm treading lightly here because

303
00:09:23,429 --> 00:09:24,669
this is not my.

304
00:09:25,539 --> 00:09:26,799
Specific wheelhouse.

305
00:09:27,059 --> 00:09:29,809
Jodi Mullen is your girl for

306
00:09:30,099 --> 00:09:33,059
sexual abuse and trauma working with CCPT.

307
00:09:34,200 --> 00:09:35,349
Really helpful resource.

308
00:09:35,419 --> 00:09:36,020
If you want,

309
00:09:36,059 --> 00:09:36,419
if you,

310
00:09:36,460 --> 00:09:39,049
if your population has a lot of sexual abuse,

311
00:09:39,380 --> 00:09:41,140
Jodi Mullen has resources for you,

312
00:09:41,179 --> 00:09:43,520
that would be a really helpful place to start.

313
00:09:43,739 --> 00:09:45,869
So this is not my exclusive wheelhouse.

314
00:09:45,979 --> 00:09:46,239
I,

315
00:09:46,419 --> 00:09:47,900
I don't want to pretend that it is.

316
00:09:49,130 --> 00:09:50,159
But I would argue,

317
00:09:50,630 --> 00:09:51,619
just in my opinion,

318
00:09:51,630 --> 00:09:53,030
and feel free to email me and say,

319
00:09:53,109 --> 00:09:54,229
you have no idea what you're talking about,

320
00:09:54,330 --> 00:09:55,270
I'll fully accept that.

321
00:09:56,030 --> 00:09:57,760
In my experience and my opinion.

322
00:09:58,679 --> 00:10:00,229
When therapists come to me and go,

323
00:10:00,520 --> 00:10:00,840
oh,

324
00:10:00,919 --> 00:10:01,429
I don't know,

325
00:10:01,559 --> 00:10:02,520
could this have meant this,

326
00:10:02,679 --> 00:10:02,890
could,

327
00:10:03,039 --> 00:10:04,989
could this possibly have been indicating this?

328
00:10:05,080 --> 00:10:06,830
Do you think this is an indication of what,

329
00:10:07,039 --> 00:10:08,289
if there's a question,

330
00:10:09,010 --> 00:10:09,770
I would

331
00:10:10,039 --> 00:10:11,989
hold up and wait to see what happens.

332
00:10:13,830 --> 00:10:15,260
My work with children,

333
00:10:15,510 --> 00:10:17,039
it's really clear,

334
00:10:17,549 --> 00:10:18,580
really clear,

335
00:10:18,789 --> 00:10:19,640
evident

336
00:10:20,150 --> 00:10:21,619
what the child is working through.

337
00:10:22,960 --> 00:10:23,960
And so if,

338
00:10:23,969 --> 00:10:24,450
if there's a,

339
00:10:24,489 --> 00:10:24,799
oh,

340
00:10:24,809 --> 00:10:25,929
maybe I'm not sure,

341
00:10:25,969 --> 00:10:26,210
let's,

342
00:10:26,289 --> 00:10:26,760
let's see,

343
00:10:26,809 --> 00:10:26,969
I,

344
00:10:27,010 --> 00:10:27,169
I,

345
00:10:27,250 --> 00:10:27,979
let's pro

346
00:10:28,609 --> 00:10:30,650
you're probably not looking at

347
00:10:31,140 --> 00:10:32,570
what you think you're looking at.

348
00:10:33,450 --> 00:10:34,500
So,

349
00:10:34,849 --> 00:10:37,849
we have resources where we have 42,

350
00:10:37,890 --> 00:10:40,200
I think is what Holmeyer and Landreth identified

351
00:10:40,450 --> 00:10:42,099
as behaviors that are likely to come up

352
00:10:42,099 --> 00:10:45,359
in CCPT if children have experienced sexual abuse.

353
00:10:46,570 --> 00:10:49,159
If you see some of those behaviors emerging

354
00:10:49,690 --> 00:10:50,520
that should

355
00:10:50,969 --> 00:10:52,080
cause you to

356
00:10:52,799 --> 00:10:54,619
make note cause you to document,

357
00:10:54,770 --> 00:10:56,520
cause you to keep an eye on that,

358
00:10:57,049 --> 00:10:58,599
cause you to potentially make a report,

359
00:10:58,840 --> 00:11:00,210
cause you to speak to parents

360
00:11:00,690 --> 00:11:02,000
we have to advocate,

361
00:11:02,250 --> 00:11:03,000
we have

362
00:11:03,210 --> 00:11:05,070
legal and ethical obligations

363
00:11:05,469 --> 00:11:08,599
to report and to address things when they come up.

364
00:11:09,780 --> 00:11:11,200
We also know

365
00:11:11,549 --> 00:11:12,020
that

366
00:11:12,239 --> 00:11:14,140
this is an appropriate model

367
00:11:14,909 --> 00:11:15,539
for this,

368
00:11:15,789 --> 00:11:17,950
even though it is not well respected

369
00:11:18,190 --> 00:11:19,340
in other circles.

370
00:11:19,590 --> 00:11:20,070
So,

371
00:11:20,750 --> 00:11:21,000
Lisa,

372
00:11:21,070 --> 00:11:22,380
I hope that answers your question.

373
00:11:22,510 --> 00:11:23,750
I feel that

374
00:11:24,070 --> 00:11:25,460
we have enough support

375
00:11:25,750 --> 00:11:27,140
that we just need to fight

376
00:11:27,469 --> 00:11:28,229
to be heard.

377
00:11:28,320 --> 00:11:28,330
We,

378
00:11:28,340 --> 00:11:30,820
we need to fight to have a place at the table

379
00:11:31,150 --> 00:11:32,250
in the legal arena,

380
00:11:32,549 --> 00:11:35,380
and we need to advocate for kids because

381
00:11:35,669 --> 00:11:36,390
here's what I know.

382
00:11:36,469 --> 00:11:38,789
I don't know a whole lot about sexual abuse

383
00:11:38,789 --> 00:11:41,070
and and physical abuse and trauma with kids that's,

384
00:11:41,099 --> 00:11:42,630
that's not our main population.

385
00:11:42,869 --> 00:11:43,580
We see it,

386
00:11:43,710 --> 00:11:45,469
but it's not like all day every day.

387
00:11:46,200 --> 00:11:46,630
So,

388
00:11:46,760 --> 00:11:46,869
I,

389
00:11:46,960 --> 00:11:48,710
I'm not an expert by any means,

390
00:11:48,979 --> 00:11:49,500
but

391
00:11:49,840 --> 00:11:51,030
what I know for sure,

392
00:11:51,200 --> 00:11:52,169
I may not know other things,

393
00:11:52,239 --> 00:11:53,630
but what I know for sure

394
00:11:54,200 --> 00:11:58,039
is that if you expect a kid to sit down and talk to you about what happened.

395
00:11:58,669 --> 00:12:01,080
You've lost your opportunity for healing for that kid.

396
00:12:02,760 --> 00:12:03,760
If they don't trust you,

397
00:12:03,799 --> 00:12:04,520
if they don't know you,

398
00:12:04,559 --> 00:12:05,320
if they don't like you,

399
00:12:05,440 --> 00:12:06,280
if they don't feel safe,

400
00:12:06,380 --> 00:12:07,400
if they feel questioned,

401
00:12:07,440 --> 00:12:08,349
interrogated,

402
00:12:08,559 --> 00:12:10,239
if they feel they're gonna get someone in trouble,

403
00:12:10,280 --> 00:12:11,950
if they feel they have to protect someone,

404
00:12:12,119 --> 00:12:14,190
if they feel that there's gonna be some,

405
00:12:14,200 --> 00:12:14,320
you know,

406
00:12:14,440 --> 00:12:15,590
someone's gonna go to jail,

407
00:12:16,080 --> 00:12:17,469
whatever the scenario is.

408
00:12:18,869 --> 00:12:20,190
They're closing off,

409
00:12:20,349 --> 00:12:21,140
shutting down,

410
00:12:21,309 --> 00:12:22,140
that's the end of it.

411
00:12:23,450 --> 00:12:24,469
Kids are smart,

412
00:12:24,780 --> 00:12:25,500
kids are aware,

413
00:12:25,659 --> 00:12:26,969
kids are perceptive.

414
00:12:27,260 --> 00:12:30,729
We cannot think that we can push our agenda

415
00:12:30,979 --> 00:12:32,200
and then it's going to work.

416
00:12:32,460 --> 00:12:33,020
It will not,

417
00:12:33,059 --> 00:12:33,979
it will backfire.

418
00:12:35,250 --> 00:12:36,010
So,

419
00:12:36,210 --> 00:12:38,559
the most respectful,

420
00:12:39,210 --> 00:12:40,330
developmentally appropriate,

421
00:12:40,409 --> 00:12:41,450
age-appropriate

422
00:12:42,010 --> 00:12:42,679
process

423
00:12:43,049 --> 00:12:43,679
is

424
00:12:44,450 --> 00:12:46,539
give them the environment and the relationship

425
00:12:46,809 --> 00:12:48,919
where they feel safe and when they're ready,

426
00:12:49,130 --> 00:12:49,969
they'll process it.

427
00:12:51,250 --> 00:12:54,270
And then we need to have our protocols in place for

428
00:12:54,640 --> 00:12:56,989
when we make reports and how we document

429
00:12:57,159 --> 00:12:58,760
and what we share with mom and dad,

430
00:12:58,880 --> 00:12:59,200
etc.

431
00:12:59,239 --> 00:12:59,570
etc.

432
00:13:00,559 --> 00:13:01,669
So that's on our end,

433
00:13:01,880 --> 00:13:02,200
but

434
00:13:02,440 --> 00:13:03,989
the child has to

435
00:13:04,270 --> 00:13:06,349
feel that they can handle this,

436
00:13:06,799 --> 00:13:10,250
and they're not going to feel they can handle it if they're forced to sit down

437
00:13:10,250 --> 00:13:13,559
with a sheriff or a police officer sitting in front of them asking them questions,

438
00:13:13,599 --> 00:13:14,760
scaring them half to death.

439
00:13:15,799 --> 00:13:16,320
So,

440
00:13:16,559 --> 00:13:17,750
my two cents on that.

441
00:13:18,320 --> 00:13:18,479
All right,

442
00:13:18,599 --> 00:13:18,880
Lisa,

443
00:13:18,960 --> 00:13:19,830
thanks so much for the question.

444
00:13:20,039 --> 00:13:21,830
I hope that that was helpful for all of you.

445
00:13:22,320 --> 00:13:22,950
And

446
00:13:23,159 --> 00:13:25,119
I'm happy to answer your question too.

00:13:25,200 --> 00:13:25,960
