Shelley Johnson 00:01:33 We wanted to know more because money seems to be something we all talk about but we don't totally understand. Shelley Johnson 00:01:39 So we invited Angela on the show. Shelley Johnson 00:01:41 Welcome, Angela. Shelley Johnson 00:01:43 Thank you for being with us. Angela Moore 00:01:44 Thank you for having me. Shelley Johnson 00:01:46 So, Angela, this is such a huge topic. Shelley Johnson 00:01:50 What inspired you to go into this line of work and what exactly is it that you do? Angela Moore 00:01:55 What inspired me is that I went to college and I studied accounting and I interned in at an accounting firm and realized, I hate this. Angela Moore 00:02:07 There's no way I can sit behind a computer all day and run, you know, financial reports. Angela Moore 00:02:13 And so I went into another line of work. Angela Moore 00:02:18 The first job I had was as a mortgage refinancer. Angela Moore 00:02:23 And during that job, I was seeing Americans refinancing their homes over and over again to pay off credit card debt. Angela Moore 00:02:32 Sometimes it was $40,000 of credit card debt, sometimes it was 80,000, $150,000. Angela Moore 00:02:39 And what they would do is they would roll their credit card debt into their mortgage to wipe their credit card debt clean and then just pay their mortgage. Angela Moore 00:02:50 And so that was my first job out of college. Angela Moore 00:02:53 My second job, I was actually in the car business as a finance director. Angela Moore 00:02:58 And again, I was the person that people would come to when they were financing their vehicle and I would be the one to get them approved for a car loan. Angela Moore 00:03:06 And it was just shocking. Angela Moore 00:03:07 To me, how many people in their, you know, 40s, 50s, 60s that didn't have any money for a down payment, they sometimes had bad credit and didn't know they had bad credit. Angela Moore 00:03:20 Or, you know, there were people that were lawyers and doctors or professional athletes making 800,000 a year that didn't have cash for a down payment and their credit was bad. Angela Moore 00:03:32 And so it just really started showing me that there's something underneath the surface that no one's talking about. Angela Moore 00:03:38 There's a financial crisis going on, and we're not openly talking about it. Angela Moore 00:03:45 You know, it's just something going on behind the scenes. Angela Moore 00:03:49 And I myself, I thought that I had really good financial habits. Angela Moore 00:03:56 After all, I had an accounting degree. Angela Moore 00:03:59 I kept a very detailed budget since the time I was 18. Angela Moore 00:04:03 I was very strategic with my money, but yet I had a compulsive spending habit. Angela Moore 00:04:09 I would go and I would spend money like crazy, shopping for clothes, things like that. Angela Moore 00:04:14 And at a certain point, I had a dip in my pay one month and I was 26 years old. Angela Moore 00:04:23 And I realized, oh, my goodness, I don't know if this continues. Angela Moore 00:04:28 I don't know how I would pay my mortgage. Angela Moore 00:04:29 I don't have enough in savings because I had been saving, but I didn't know how much should I be saving, right? Angela Moore 00:04:36 And then how should I be investing? Angela Moore 00:04:38 I didn't know. Angela Moore 00:04:39 And at a certain point, I took a lump sum of my savings and I renovated my kitchen. Angela Moore 00:04:45 And so then it was like all of a sudden I didn't really have a strong emergency fund. Angela Moore 00:04:49 And when this dip happened in my income, panic mode set in. Angela Moore 00:04:54 And at that point, I went to seek out a financial advisor. Angela Moore 00:04:59 No one wanted to work with me because I was 26 with no assets, just a whole bunch of debt. Angela Moore 00:05:04 And I found this guy and he said, I feel like it's my public duty to help you. Angela Moore 00:05:09 And he said, bring in all your statements, bring in everything. Angela Moore 00:05:13 He sat me down for one hour. Angela Moore 00:05:15 He said, no more eating out. Angela Moore 00:05:17 Learn how to cook. Angela Moore 00:05:18 No more shopping. Angela Moore 00:05:19 You have enough crap in your closet, you know, no more cable TV. Angela Moore 00:05:23 Read a book. Angela Moore 00:05:24 And in that one hour session with him, he cut out $800 out of my monthly budget. Angela Moore 00:05:29 And we started putting that towards paying off debt. Angela Moore 00:05:32 Within about four or five months, I was completely debt free. Kathy Ticaro 00:05:37 Wow. Angela Moore 00:05:37 I think at the point. Angela Moore 00:05:38 At that point, I had $18,000 of credit card debt. Angela Moore 00:05:42 So I paid that off within a few months of working with him. Angela Moore 00:05:45 And then I. Angela Moore 00:05:48 After that, I started saving and investing and I realized, man, this person has changed my life. Angela Moore 00:05:57 I want to be like that. Angela Moore 00:05:58 And like I said, I already knew that a lot of people were struggling financially. Angela Moore 00:06:03 So at that point, I was 28 years old, I pivoted and I changed careers and became a financial advisor. Angela Moore 00:06:11 And that's what I've been doing ever since. Angela Moore 00:06:14 And within the last couple of years, I actually shifted and stopped being a financial planner and became a financial coach instead. Angela Moore 00:06:22 Because I felt like that's where the need is. Shelley Johnson 00:06:25 It's so important. Kathy Ticaro 00:06:27 And women are so vulnerable, I think more so than men. Kathy Ticaro 00:06:31 And I think that people have a hard time wrapping their heads around finances, how to do it properly. Kathy Ticaro 00:06:37 We're not taught about it in school. Kathy Ticaro 00:06:39 Um, it just seems like the terms are so intimidating and we're. Kathy Ticaro 00:06:44 We get sucked in not thinking about it. Kathy Ticaro 00:06:47 You know, we go out to eat, you go to the store and like you said, you, you were buying all kinds of stuff. Kathy Ticaro 00:06:53 We don't think when we put it on a credit card how much that's really going to hurt. Kathy Ticaro 00:06:57 How do we gain control and how do we look at financial planning as something that isn't intimidating? Angela Moore 00:07:05 Yeah, I think the very first step is getting real with yourself about how you look at money. Angela Moore 00:07:13 I feel that most of us, when we think about money, there's shame, there's fear, there's guilt. Angela Moore 00:07:23 Oh, I'm not doing enough or I'm doing this wrong or I'm doing that wrong or I don't know how to, you know, it's so much negative self talk and just focusing on all the things. Angela Moore 00:07:34 I don't know how to do this and I don't know how to invest and I don't, you know, and so it becomes something that we almost hate. Angela Moore 00:07:41 It becomes something extremely negative in our minds subconsciously. Angela Moore 00:07:46 And it's kind of like anything else. Angela Moore 00:07:49 If it's something that you don't like that is negative, you're probably not going to get more of it. Angela Moore 00:07:57 You're probably not going to want to hang out with that thing or that person. Angela Moore 00:08:01 You're not going to want to dive into it because it's not something fun to you. Angela Moore 00:08:06 It's human nature for us to gravitate towards things we love and like and that are enjoyable. Angela Moore 00:08:12 And it's human nature for us to retreat and hide from the things we don't like. Angela Moore 00:08:16 And so a lot of it is changing the way we think about it and making it exciting and fun, reframing. Angela Moore 00:08:27 The way to do that, in my opinion, is to focus in on your goals. Angela Moore 00:08:33 And when I say Goals, I mean, visualizing what kind of life do you want to live? Angela Moore 00:08:40 Like, I did this exercise, and I found myself thinking, man, I would love to be able to. Angela Moore 00:08:47 This was before COVID and everything, obviously, but this is back in the day. Angela Moore 00:08:51 I would love to be able to work from home. Angela Moore 00:08:54 I would love to not have to wear a suit. Angela Moore 00:08:56 I'd love to wear leggings every day. Angela Moore 00:08:58 I'd love to sit with someone at their kitchen table and help them with their finances. Angela Moore 00:09:02 I'd love to be able to bake a cake in the middle of the day or go gardening or spend time with my kids. Angela Moore 00:09:07 I just had this vision of what I wanted my life to look like, and that vision was very exciting to me. Angela Moore 00:09:15 And so one of the things I've noticed in my years of doing this is that most people have no clarity around their goals. Angela Moore 00:09:25 I'll meet with someone, and the first thing I'll say, so, what are you looking to accomplish? Angela Moore 00:09:30 Right. Angela Moore 00:09:31 Or how can I help you? Angela Moore 00:09:32 What. Angela Moore 00:09:32 What would you like to do? Angela Moore 00:09:36 And most people are trying to make up an answer on the spot. Angela Moore 00:09:40 They. Angela Moore 00:09:40 It tells me that they haven't really thought about previously exactly what their goals are. Angela Moore 00:09:46 And when you think about your goals and you actually write them down, it forces you to be very intentional about the things you want to accomplish. Angela Moore 00:09:56 And if you focus in on that, it becomes something fun. Angela Moore 00:10:00 It becomes something empowering. Angela Moore 00:10:01 It becomes something you're kind of working towards. Angela Moore 00:10:04 It's just like when you plan a vacation, right? Angela Moore 00:10:07 If you're. Angela Moore 00:10:07 Let's say you're going on a cruise in a few months now, it's like, man, I can't wait to go on this cruise, and I can't wait to do all the things I'm going to do. Angela Moore 00:10:15 And you start planning all the details of this vacation you're going to go on. Angela Moore 00:10:20 It's the same with our goals, when we really hone in on our goals. Angela Moore 00:10:25 And I don't mean like, yeah, it's good to have a goal of, I want to buy a house in three years for, you know, $400,000 or whatever. Angela Moore 00:10:33 But what I mean by goals is really visualizing your ideal life. Angela Moore 00:10:40 What does that look like? Angela Moore 00:10:41 And why? Angela Moore 00:10:42 And then working towards that, and the finances kind of fall. Angela Moore 00:10:46 Fall in place, because finances play a big role in pretty much all of our goals. Kathy Ticaro 00:10:53 Yeah. Kathy Ticaro 00:10:53 You know, you hear a lot of people saying, I don't have money to save. Kathy Ticaro 00:10:58 How am I going to plan for any kind of financial future? Kathy Ticaro 00:11:02 I don't make enough. Kathy Ticaro 00:11:03 And certainly I think that There's a fear factor there. Kathy Ticaro 00:11:06 After the Great Recession, there were people who lost 30 to 60% of their investments, and a lot of them haven't recovered. Kathy Ticaro 00:11:13 So when they go to a financial planner, I think that they're. Kathy Ticaro 00:11:17 It almost feels like an adversarial position, especially when the financial planner's spouting all these terms that make no sense at all. Angela Moore 00:11:25 Yeah. Angela Moore 00:11:26 So two. Angela Moore 00:11:27 Two part answer to your question and statement. Angela Moore 00:11:31 The first is it's true there are a lot of people not making enough money. Angela Moore 00:11:36 And it is true. Angela Moore 00:11:38 Right. Angela Moore 00:11:38 One plus one equals two. Angela Moore 00:11:39 It's simple math. Angela Moore 00:11:41 If you're not making enough to just simply live on and pay your living expenses and food, it's impossible to save. Angela Moore 00:11:48 I'm not going to sit here and say that there's some magic trick to do that. Angela Moore 00:11:52 No, I think the answer to that is you have to take ownership and you have to start thinking of creative ways to increase your income. Angela Moore 00:12:02 And, you know, I've worked with clients before who have PhDs, and they're making 35,000 a year, and I look at them and say, what are you doing? Angela Moore 00:12:11 Less than 1% of the world has a PhD. Angela Moore 00:12:14 Go out and make more money. Angela Moore 00:12:15 And so we start putting a strategy in place for them to look for a new job. Angela Moore 00:12:20 Sometimes it's just a matter of being too comfortable in the position you're in and not going out there and putting yourself out there to get a new job or start a side hustle or, you know, create some kind of passive stream of income or additional stream of income. Angela Moore 00:12:38 And sometimes that's the answer. Angela Moore 00:12:40 Sometimes the answer is you need to make more money. Angela Moore 00:12:43 Whether that is shifting industries, shifting careers, and, you know, that's something. Angela Moore 00:12:49 The more you practice that, the better off you'll be. Angela Moore 00:12:53 Because the, the new retirement, right. Angela Moore 00:12:55 We're living so long, most of us are going to end up having multiple different career paths in our lifetime. Kathy Ticaro 00:13:02 Oh, yeah. Kathy Ticaro 00:13:02 Oh, that's definitely been happening in the past 10 to 15 years. Kathy Ticaro 00:13:07 And with, with the pandemic, I had one, right? Shelley Johnson 00:13:10 Oh, my gosh. Kathy Ticaro 00:13:10 Kathy was originally a nurse, and then you totally pivoted. Kathy Ticaro 00:13:14 Just amazing. Listener 00:13:16 Just a little bit. Angela Moore 00:13:18 So the quicker you can hone in on what are my gifts, what are my talents, what am I good at, what do I love, and how can I flip that and monetize those skills? Angela Moore 00:13:28 The better off you'll be. Angela Moore 00:13:30 Because you might need to be flipping that multiple times. Angela Moore 00:13:33 Right? Angela Moore 00:13:33 You, it's, it's not okay to just sit there and say, I'm not making enough money. Angela Moore 00:13:38 So I can't save. Angela Moore 00:13:40 It's like, okay, what am I going to do to figure out how to go out and make more money? Listener 00:13:45 I was just going to say, sometimes it's not just about what are my, what am I good at, what are my skills like, like in my situation, when I lost my nursing career at the age of 42, that's all I knew. Listener 00:13:58 So how do you change careers in midlife like that? Listener 00:14:02 I didn't know what I liked, didn't know what I didn't like. Listener 00:14:03 It was very difficult. Listener 00:14:05 Like, what skills do I have that I can bring from my nursing to a new career? Listener 00:14:11 Well, I, I didn't know. Listener 00:14:12 So I ended up going to a career planning workshop to find out what I wanted to be when I grew up at 42. Listener 00:14:18 And I was shocked, absolutely shocked when a lady gave me my sheet after three days of aptitude tests and personality test, telling me that I was geared to be a heavy equipment operator. Listener 00:14:30 Honestly, I laughed so hard I just about fell off my chair. Listener 00:14:33 I'm like, come on man, like there's no way. Listener 00:14:36 So I said, I'm a woman, I'm 42, I don't even like equipment. Listener 00:14:39 I'm not mechanically inclined. Listener 00:14:41 I said, your test is wrong. Listener 00:14:42 There was a dude next to me. Listener 00:14:44 I'm like, it's probably his. Listener 00:14:45 You know, you got this mixed up. Listener 00:14:47 But it took for. Listener 00:14:48 And she, she said, she pushed it back and she said, you know, if only you'd believe in yourself a little bit, missy, you'd see the test is right. Listener 00:14:55 She went on to put on a video about it's possible. Listener 00:14:58 And that video from les Brown, a 10 minute YouTube video, really changed the pattern of my thinking, realizing, well, wait a minute, maybe I can do this. Listener 00:15:09 Maybe there's just a slim possibility that there's something I can apply that in who I am as a person. Listener 00:15:15 Even though it's a career that I would have never, ever, ever considered. Listener 00:15:20 And lo and behold, just because I allowed myself that shift to dream of doing something that I would have never thought possible, well, son of a gun, I gave it a shot. Listener 00:15:32 I ended up going through this. Listener 00:15:33 Women Building Futures, it's a non profit organization for women in Canada that helps women get into non traditional trades. Listener 00:15:40 Well, son of a gun, if every piece of equipment that I got on, I got accepted for the program I was good at because I gave myself the chance. Listener 00:15:50 That's the message in there. Listener 00:15:52 So even if sometimes you might not think there's a career that's meant for you, you might be Surprised at how exactly untrue that is. Listener 00:16:01 You. Listener 00:16:02 You. Listener 00:16:02 I think women tend to limit themselves. Shelley Johnson 00:16:05 Yeah. Listener 00:16:05 To certain things. Kathy Ticaro 00:16:07 Yeah, I was, I was going to say that self limiting. Kathy Ticaro 00:16:09 I think women tend to do that. Kathy Ticaro 00:16:11 Yeah. Angela Moore 00:16:12 I'll tell you, you hit it on the nail. Angela Moore 00:16:15 It's all in our mind. Angela Moore 00:16:16 It's what do you believe that you can achieve? Angela Moore 00:16:20 If you don't believe it, you can't do it. Angela Moore 00:16:22 If you do believe it, then there's a high likelihood you can achieve it. Angela Moore 00:16:25 Especially I believe women, we, when we put our mind to something, amazing things happen. Angela Moore 00:16:32 I'm going to tell you a story. Angela Moore 00:16:33 When I first started my business and I left my big corporate job, I thought to myself, man, if I could just make 60,000 my first year, you know, that would be comfortable. Angela Moore 00:16:44 And I just kept saying and repeating in my mind the $60,000 number. Angela Moore 00:16:49 And I went to this incubator program in Boston and this woman was on stage and she had created, you know, hundreds of thousands of dollars in a business and sold it. Angela Moore 00:17:02 And now she was on her second business that was valued at over a hundred, I'm sorry, a hundred millions, sorry. Angela Moore 00:17:09 She was on her second business that was valued over a hundred million dollars and she was standing on stage saying, you know, if you can start a million dollar company, why can't you start a hundred million dollar company? Angela Moore 00:17:23 What's the difference? Angela Moore 00:17:24 You know, it's all about what you're focused on building. Angela Moore 00:17:27 And I remember thinking to myself, yeah, why am I not focusing on building a million dollar business versus a 60,000? Angela Moore 00:17:35 Why have I been saying over and over again this 60 that, why am I believing that that's all I can do my first year? Angela Moore 00:17:42 And it, it makes a huge difference when you look at how you are viewing things. Angela Moore 00:17:47 It's just like I mentioned, you know, working with someone who has a PhD. Angela Moore 00:17:52 If it's all about what you believe you can do. Angela Moore 00:17:56 Sure, because there's people out there that have no education at all and they're, you know, starting companies that are extremely successful. Angela Moore 00:18:06 And then there's people out there that are equipped with education and talent and just all kinds of things that aren't doing anything with it because they don't believe that they can. Angela Moore 00:18:18 And I wanted to talk a little bit about your, the other half of your question about when someone goes and they sit in front of a professional like a financial planner or a financial advisor and you know, and they've lost money previously in the market, especially in the crash of 2008, something like that, I think that the key is finding the right advisor. Angela Moore 00:18:44 It's just like going to a doctor, right? Angela Moore 00:18:46 You might go to someone and you just don't get that warm feeling that they care or they're just kind of in and out, not really doing a whole lot. Angela Moore 00:18:59 Whereas you might go to someone else and they take their time with you, they ask you lots of questions, they listen, they figure out what's going on and they diagnose the problem correctly and they, they give you some, some health guidance and some tips and even maybe a prescription that completely changes your life. Angela Moore 00:19:18 That's how it is with any professional. Angela Moore 00:19:22 So when you're going to a financial planner or financial advisor, it's important, important that you take your time to find the right person. Angela Moore 00:19:29 You research, you find someone who has maybe some things in common with you. Angela Moore 00:19:36 You find someone who is credentialed and has the education in the background. Angela Moore 00:19:41 You find someone who specializes in working with other clients that are similar to you. Angela Moore 00:19:46 And then you interview them and you make sure that you get that warm fuzzy feeling that, wow, this person has added so much value in this 30 minute consultation or in this hour long consultation that I feel like they really can add value in my life. Angela Moore 00:20:01 If you don't have that feeling when you talk to one of them, then that's probably not the person for you. Angela Moore 00:20:07 We're, we're not all created equal and we don't all have expertise in the same areas. Angela Moore 00:20:13 Someone might specialize in working with families that have special needs issues. Angela Moore 00:20:18 Someone might specialize in working with, you know, LGBTQ issues. Angela Moore 00:20:23 Someone might specialize in working with someone who has compulsive spending or, you know, diff hoarding or whatever. Angela Moore 00:20:33 Everyone's so different, and there's so many different areas of expertise and specialties that you want to find someone that has the skills and the qualities that really fit with what you need. Shelley Johnson 00:20:46 That makes sense. Speaker A 00:20:51 Stay tuned for more of women road warriors coming up. Dean Michael 00:20:58 Dean Michael, the tax doctor here. Shelley Johnson 00:22:49 We want to help as many women as possible how do women guarantee a financial nest egg or stop living with more month than money? Shelley Johnson 00:22:57 There is a way people don't openly talk about it, but money impacts more people than you think, angela Moore says. Shelley Johnson 00:23:04 Many times we think we have good financial habits, but we don't. Shelley Johnson 00:23:07 It's a matter of gaining control over compulsive spending. Shelley Johnson 00:23:11 Many people don't know how much they should be saving when they're able to do that. Shelley Johnson 00:23:15 You need to get real with yourself about how you look at money. Shelley Johnson 00:23:18 Get rid of the shame and guilt. Shelley Johnson 00:23:20 Stop blaming yourself. Shelley Johnson 00:23:22 Focus on the positive. Shelley Johnson 00:23:24 That way money management won't be negative and you won't hate it because we don't like to do stuff we hate, Angela says. Shelley Johnson 00:23:30 You also need to change the way you think of money. Shelley Johnson 00:23:33 Reframe and find the right financial advisor. Shelley Johnson 00:23:37 Interview that person to make sure you have a good fit. Shelley Johnson 00:23:40 Focus on your goals and visualize what kind of life you want to live so you can accomplish it. Shelley Johnson 00:23:45 Take ownership of your money with creative ways to increase your income. Shelley Johnson 00:23:49 Figure out your strengths and how to flip things so you can monetize those skills. Shelley Johnson 00:23:54 Angela Moore helps women gain financial control with some great insight. Shelley Johnson 00:23:58 She's a certified financial planner and coach who's disrupting the financial game. Shelley Johnson 00:24:02 She's the founder and CEO of Modern Money Education. Shelley Johnson 00:24:06 Angela, you said you need to find the financial Advisor that really fits. Shelley Johnson 00:24:10 You know, I think that's probably some of the best advice. Kathy Ticaro 00:24:14 You need to have somebody who's in your corner. Kathy Ticaro 00:24:16 I mean, it's an intimidating subject to begin with. Kathy Ticaro 00:24:19 You're taking risk, you're entrusting somebody else with your hard earned money. Kathy Ticaro 00:24:25 And it does feel, especially with the stock market and that kind of stuff, that it's kind of like going to Las Vegas, you know, and that. Angela Moore 00:24:33 And I think, you know, one of the things I always did when I was working in wealth management and as a financial planner is really arming my clients with education. Angela Moore 00:24:45 A client needs to understand why their portfolio looks the way it is. Angela Moore 00:24:50 Why is diversification important? Angela Moore 00:24:53 Why is their allocation this way? Angela Moore 00:24:56 Why? Angela Moore 00:24:56 You know, if the client understands what y'all are doing as a strategy, together as a team, you and the client, that makes all the difference. Angela Moore 00:25:07 Because if someone comes and they say, man, my portfolio is not doing well at all, it's underperforming the market. Angela Moore 00:25:17 You have to take a step deeper and say, well, is your portfolio constructed in a way that's very conservative, that's in line with kind of your tolerance for risk, and is constructed in a way so that you're not losing a ton of money if the market tanks, but you're getting a nice, smooth, consistent return over time. Angela Moore 00:25:37 And, you know, the other thing is some people don't need to take a lot of risk to meet their, the outcome, the goal that they're trying to get to. Angela Moore 00:25:45 If someone comes, you know, back in the day, if someone would come to me and they only need a 4% return to meet every year to meet their goals, why would I put them in a portfolio that's going to earn, you know, 30% but also has the potential to lose 50%? Kathy Ticaro 00:26:02 Right. Angela Moore 00:26:03 I'm not going to do that. Angela Moore 00:26:04 So if that person doesn't understand why we set the portfolio up the way we did, then they might. Angela Moore 00:26:11 Hey, Angela, the market's up 30% and I'm only up, you know, 8%. Angela Moore 00:26:15 Why is that? Angela Moore 00:26:16 They have to understand. Angela Moore 00:26:17 So education has to be part of it. Angela Moore 00:26:20 Because to your point, we go through elementary school, middle school, high school, college, grad school, dental school, law school, and nobody's ever taught us about personal finance. Angela Moore 00:26:30 No, as a, as a. Angela Moore 00:26:32 Go ahead, sorry. Kathy Ticaro 00:26:33 No, that's very true. Kathy Ticaro 00:26:34 And I've actually heard that like doctors and lawyers, they're not really taught about business. Kathy Ticaro 00:26:40 You know, they go out and they practice medicine or they practice law, but that's not covered. Kathy Ticaro 00:26:47 And in order to be successful, they need to understand finance. Angela Moore 00:26:50 You're absolutely right. Angela Moore 00:26:51 We're not taught how to run a business. Angela Moore 00:26:53 We're not taught how to sell. Angela Moore 00:26:57 We're not taught how to build relationships. Angela Moore 00:26:59 We're just. Angela Moore 00:27:00 There's so many things that we are not taught. Angela Moore 00:27:04 And to your point, you can go out there and you can complete law school or med school, and you start a practice and you realize, all I know how to do is how to operate on someone. Angela Moore 00:27:14 I don't know any of this other stuff. Angela Moore 00:27:16 I don't know marketing. Angela Moore 00:27:18 I don't know finances. Angela Moore 00:27:19 I don't know any of this stuff. Angela Moore 00:27:21 And so that's why it's so important. Angela Moore 00:27:23 I always talk about. Angela Moore 00:27:25 It's very important to build a team. Angela Moore 00:27:27 It's also important who you surround yourself with, who are your friends, who are, you know, what are. Angela Moore 00:27:32 What podcasts do you listen to, what kind of things do you consume? Angela Moore 00:27:37 And in terms of building a professional team, you know, I don't think it's good enough just to have a financial person. Angela Moore 00:27:45 You should have a lawyer, you should have a tax person. Angela Moore 00:27:49 You might need a therapist. Angela Moore 00:27:51 You. Angela Moore 00:27:51 You might need, you know, having a Rolodex of people you can reach out to when you have a question or when there's something you need to learn or when you need guidance on something makes total sense. Kathy Ticaro 00:28:05 You know, I think that there's a lot of fear today. Kathy Ticaro 00:28:08 Inflation is just has been through the roof. Kathy Ticaro 00:28:10 People trying to buy homes. Shelley Johnson 00:28:12 I mean, it's just amazing. Kathy Ticaro 00:28:13 The mortgage rates have gone up, the prices have not come down on real estate. Kathy Ticaro 00:28:18 And if you have to buy a new vehicle, I stand back and wonder, how the heck does a family raise children and get a house? Kathy Ticaro 00:28:26 The American dream, the North American dream. Kathy Ticaro 00:28:29 Buy that new car. Shelley Johnson 00:28:31 How do they do it? Angela Moore 00:28:33 The first thing I want to say is that everything is cyclical. Angela Moore 00:28:37 So all things cycle through ups and downs. Angela Moore 00:28:42 So when, you know, right now, housing prices are high, interest rates are high, you know, inflation is high, that doesn't mean that it'll always be that way. Angela Moore 00:28:52 And what you don't want to do is make the mistake of feeling rushed because, you know, oh, I need to buy a house now, because if I don't, I'll miss out on my opportunity. Angela Moore 00:29:01 Or, you know, that feeling of being driven by the fear of missing out on something. Angela Moore 00:29:08 You always want to do things aligned with your own timing. Angela Moore 00:29:13 And when you're ready for something, especially when it comes to buying a large purchase like a house or a car, you want to make sure that you're ready to do that. Angela Moore 00:29:24 Otherwise, just take your time and try not to get caught up in the chaos of the chatter of everyone else is doing this. Angela Moore 00:29:34 So I need to be doing it, like try to block out the noise. Angela Moore 00:29:38 The second thing is, you're absolutely right, it's hard. Angela Moore 00:29:42 It's extremely hard. Angela Moore 00:29:44 Especially childcare and everything else. Kathy Ticaro 00:29:47 Oh, and super expensive. Angela Moore 00:29:49 It's ridiculously. Angela Moore 00:29:51 I have a 2 year old and a 4 year old. Angela Moore 00:29:52 So childcare is very expensive and so is housing. Angela Moore 00:30:00 I think that my answer is you have to start thinking outside the box. Angela Moore 00:30:08 There are markets where it's not that expensive. Angela Moore 00:30:12 There are always going to be properties that are less expensive than market. Angela Moore 00:30:19 There are people renting where they live and buying investment property elsewhere where they can afford to buy. Angela Moore 00:30:27 There's ways around it, there's ways to make investments, there's ways to manage. Angela Moore 00:30:33 But you have to think outside the box. Angela Moore 00:30:36 And sometimes to do that, maybe it does require you to talk to a professional or to start reading books or to enter some type of coaching program or to really start kind of tuning in to people that are not like you. Angela Moore 00:30:55 I'll give you an example. Angela Moore 00:30:57 I attended some Grant Cardone workshop recently and he mentioned that he had been on Undercover Billionaire on tv and I wasn't even aware of that. Angela Moore 00:31:07 So I started watching the show and there's three billionaires that they put on there. Angela Moore 00:31:13 They gave them a dirty old pickup truck, $100 and a cell phone with no contacts in it. Angela Moore 00:31:19 And it had 90 days to create a business that is worth at least $1 million. Angela Moore 00:31:26 Grant Cardone created a business worth $5 million in that 90 day period. Angela Moore 00:31:31 Not only that, but it was right during when the whole Covid shutdown happened. Angela Moore 00:31:36 So he had to deal with all of that. Angela Moore 00:31:38 They all did. Angela Moore 00:31:39 Watching that show and absorbing that content and seeing how these three people, all three of them, were able to successfully start businesses with nothing but $100 in their pocket. Angela Moore 00:31:52 Right? Kathy Ticaro 00:31:53 That's amazing. Angela Moore 00:31:54 It is amazing. Angela Moore 00:31:55 And when you watch it, this is why I'm saying it's, it's a mind, it's a mind shift thing because they know they can do it. Angela Moore 00:32:04 They went, hey, I've, I've created multiple businesses. Angela Moore 00:32:08 I know how to do this, I can do it. Angela Moore 00:32:10 That mindset alone is what made them successful and the willingness to do the work, obviously. Angela Moore 00:32:15 But I think that what I find interesting about life and me, as you know, in this business, obviously clients share very personal things with you and you hear so many stories from health issues to death, you know, a death in the family, bankruptcies I mean, businesses going out of business, lawsuits. Angela Moore 00:32:39 People are constantly faced with challenges all the time. Angela Moore 00:32:43 Life is always like a roller coaster. Angela Moore 00:32:46 So you almost have to be understanding, like it's going to happen. Angela Moore 00:32:52 It's a matter of when is the challenge going to happen and how am I going to overcome it? Angela Moore 00:32:57 There's always going to be something. Angela Moore 00:33:00 So you're right. Angela Moore 00:33:02 Right now it's inflation. Angela Moore 00:33:03 Housing prices are very expensive, you know, but we also have record low unemployment. Angela Moore 00:33:13 We have. Angela Moore 00:33:14 Artificial intelligence is just surging. Angela Moore 00:33:17 Everything can be done over the Internet. Angela Moore 00:33:19 Nowadays you can connect with anyone all over the world. Angela Moore 00:33:23 There's 8 billion people in the world. Angela Moore 00:33:26 If you can come up with some way to sell something to 10 of them or to a hundred of them, you have a way of making money. Angela Moore 00:33:34 There is a way. Angela Moore 00:33:36 And I think the biggest trap is, you know, getting caught up in the doom and gloom. Angela Moore 00:33:43 You have to transcend that. Angela Moore 00:33:45 You have to say, well, that doesn't. Angela Moore 00:33:48 That doesn't apply to me. Angela Moore 00:33:50 I'm going to make it. Shelley Johnson 00:33:51 Yeah. Angela Moore 00:33:52 And going to be successful. Shelley Johnson 00:33:53 And oftentimes you can be doing something and you have that friend who says, well, that's never going to work. Shelley Johnson 00:34:00 It's a negative Nelly message. Shelley Johnson 00:34:02 And it's not encouraging. Kathy Ticaro 00:34:03 You don't need to have that, you know, especially, you know, because I think determination, that's huge. Kathy Ticaro 00:34:10 And you have to be focused. Kathy Ticaro 00:34:11 You have to have a goal. Kathy Ticaro 00:34:13 And people lose sight of those things. Kathy Ticaro 00:34:15 That can be a major obstruction. Kathy Ticaro 00:34:18 I kind of wanted. Shelley Johnson 00:34:19 I know this is such. Kathy Ticaro 00:34:21 There's so much to unpack with this topic. Kathy Ticaro 00:34:23 In financial planning, what are the most important things women need to know to win at the money game? Kathy Ticaro 00:34:29 Because women have different challenges than men do. Kathy Ticaro 00:34:32 I really think so. Kathy Ticaro 00:34:33 Because they typically are the caretakers as. Shelley Johnson 00:34:36 Well as the breadwinners. Kathy Ticaro 00:34:37 I mean, they have lots of jobs. Angela Moore 00:34:39 Yes. Angela Moore 00:34:41 I don't want to sound negative, because this might sound negative, but you're absolutely right. Angela Moore 00:34:46 It's challenging. Angela Moore 00:34:48 Right. Angela Moore 00:34:50 If you have children, which I can speak about this, because when I was pregnant, I was exhausted the whole time. Angela Moore 00:34:58 I didn't feel like working. Angela Moore 00:35:00 I was sick. Angela Moore 00:35:01 I just was tired. Angela Moore 00:35:03 After I had the baby, I was tired. Angela Moore 00:35:06 Now that they're older, I'm still tired. Angela Moore 00:35:09 I'm tired all the time, and I don't have my own time because I have to take care of children. Angela Moore 00:35:14 And you're absolutely right. Angela Moore 00:35:16 It affects. Angela Moore 00:35:17 It can affect your ability to work the same as maybe a man would. Shelley Johnson 00:35:22 Yep. Angela Moore 00:35:23 You know, all things equal, like you said, at some point there's the need potentially for you to be a caretaker, maybe your parents, maybe someone in the family. Angela Moore 00:35:35 That role often falls on us. Angela Moore 00:35:36 So then that can affect our ability to earn the same way or work the same way. Angela Moore 00:35:42 We have been. Angela Moore 00:35:43 In addition to that, we live longer, typically. Kathy Ticaro 00:35:47 Yeah. Angela Moore 00:35:48 So you have to compound that with also so living longer, being caretaker, having children. Angela Moore 00:35:56 And then there's the income disparity. Angela Moore 00:35:59 And also there's also discrimination that we face that maybe we don't even realize we've faced. Angela Moore 00:36:07 I had a job one time where, unbeknownst to me, accounts were being given out, but they just weren't being given to me. Angela Moore 00:36:16 And there ended up being a large lawsuit. Angela Moore 00:36:20 And the law firm had documentation showing that on average, my male counterpart was being given 17 accounts annually. Angela Moore 00:36:30 I had never been given an account. Angela Moore 00:36:32 So, you know, you. Angela Moore 00:36:34 Sometimes there are things, there's challenges that we face that we don't even necessarily understand or know about. Angela Moore 00:36:43 But one thing I've learned about women is no matter what we are, we are overcomers. Angela Moore 00:36:51 We. Angela Moore 00:36:52 We do things very efficiently. Angela Moore 00:36:54 We do things very well. Angela Moore 00:36:55 It's almost like the challenges have just made us stronger and made us better. Angela Moore 00:37:00 And, you know, we do that. Angela Moore 00:37:03 We do that all the time, and we do it well. Kathy Ticaro 00:37:06 Yeah. Kathy Ticaro 00:37:07 Women really are very resilient. Kathy Ticaro 00:37:09 Of course, I think biologically we have to be. Kathy Ticaro 00:37:11 We have to think about a hundred million things and possibilities just to raise children. Kathy Ticaro 00:37:17 What's that kid going to be doing next? Kathy Ticaro 00:37:19 You can't just let them do something. Kathy Ticaro 00:37:22 I mean, they could get hurt. Kathy Ticaro 00:37:24 So we got to be thinking about that while we're doing something else. Kathy Ticaro 00:37:27 Men don't do it as well. Kathy Ticaro 00:37:30 Our brain compartmentalizes differently. Kathy Ticaro 00:37:32 I think that they're more. Kathy Ticaro 00:37:33 We have more neurons than fire. Angela Moore 00:37:36 Yeah. Angela Moore 00:37:37 It's the practice of having to do that constantly, having to manage all of the mental space and having to think of more efficient ways to do things. Shelley Johnson 00:39:09 Finding the correct financial advisor is essential to making sure you have a portfolio that can weather economic downturns. Shelley Johnson 00:39:16 Angela Moore says you need to have an advisor who can explain things to you. Shelley Johnson 00:39:20 She's a certified financial planner and coach who's disrupting the financial game. Shelley Johnson 00:39:25 She's the founder and CEO of Modern Money Education and she helps women all over. Shelley Johnson 00:39:30 Education has to be part of the financial planning and management process. Shelley Johnson 00:39:34 There are way too many things we're not taught in school in order to achieve total success. Shelley Johnson 00:39:39 Finance is a very large part of our success and like it or not, you need to build a team and surround yourself with the messaging and tools to learn how to achieve that. Shelley Johnson 00:39:47 Having a Rolodex of people when you have a question or guidance is important. Shelley Johnson 00:39:51 Remember, everything is cyclical. Shelley Johnson 00:39:54 Life is always full of challenges. Shelley Johnson 00:39:56 It's a matter of making a plan to overcome them. Shelley Johnson 00:39:59 Rise above the doom and gloom. Shelley Johnson 00:40:01 Inflation may be high now, but it may not be in the future. Shelley Johnson 00:40:05 Don't rush big financial decisions. Shelley Johnson 00:40:07 Don't be driven by fear. Shelley Johnson 00:40:09 Always do things that align with your own timing, especially when it comes to a large purchase. Shelley Johnson 00:40:14 Take your time and don't get caught up in the chaos. Shelley Johnson 00:40:18 There are always ways to make investments successfully, but you have to dig outside the box and tune into people who are experts. Kathy Ticaro 00:40:26 Angela, are there maybe some basic steps? Kathy Ticaro 00:40:29 We just have a few minutes left. Kathy Ticaro 00:40:31 Some nuggets you can give women to get started achieving a new mindset, financial planning, securing their financial future. Kathy Ticaro 00:40:40 That's going to be successful? Angela Moore 00:40:42 Absolutely. Angela Moore 00:40:43 Something I tell everyone is start with your goals, sit down and actually write out your goals. Angela Moore 00:40:49 And then if you can begin to speak them, be obviously be careful who you speak them to, but speak them to someone who encourages you. Angela Moore 00:40:58 Because when you speak your goals now, there's almost like this level of accountability. Angela Moore 00:41:03 And then thirdly, be sure to create some type of visual if you can create a vision board or you know, put your written goals up on the wall so that you're constantly reminded of them. Angela Moore 00:41:15 Because what that does, it triggers your reticular activating system and it Brings kind of your subconscious thoughts into the conscious realm, and it. Angela Moore 00:41:24 It submerges them. Angela Moore 00:41:26 So what happens is you start working towards your goals subconsciously and consciously. Angela Moore 00:41:32 You're more likely to achieve them that way. Angela Moore 00:41:34 And you're focused on the life you want to live versus thinking about, you know, the numbers and things like that. Angela Moore 00:41:42 The next step is to get very clear on where you currently are. Angela Moore 00:41:45 That's by creating a budget or a spending plan, which you can download for free if you go to my website, which is modernmoney education. Angela Moore 00:41:54 The next step is to align your goals with your budget. Angela Moore 00:41:59 So start intentionally allocating money towards things you either love or things that align with your goals. Angela Moore 00:42:06 If there's something that you're spending money on every month that does not help you achieve your goals, and it's not something that brings you extreme joy, then try to eliminate or reduce that item. Kathy Ticaro 00:42:18 That makes sense. Angela Moore 00:42:19 Yeah. Kathy Ticaro 00:42:19 I mean, when you think about it, there's so many things that nickel and dime us. Shelley Johnson 00:42:23 If you want to watch this or. Kathy Ticaro 00:42:24 Listen to that $10 here, $7 a month there may not seem like a lot, but it adds up. Kathy Ticaro 00:42:32 And these are some of the things What, Kathy? Kathy Ticaro 00:42:34 I'm sorry. Listener 00:42:35 Starbucks. Kathy Ticaro 00:42:36 Starbucks, yeah, exactly. Kathy Ticaro 00:42:38 I mean, all these little things. Kathy Ticaro 00:42:40 There was a financial planner that I had spoken with a number of years ago that said the amount of money people spend on fast food throughout their lifetime would be astronomical if you actually totaled it up. Angela Moore 00:42:52 Yeah. Angela Moore 00:42:53 And I think. Angela Moore 00:42:54 I think it's one of those things that is individual to everyone. Angela Moore 00:42:57 If Starbucks makes you extremely happy, then do it. Angela Moore 00:43:01 But if you're just going through the motions, going to Starbucks every day like it's nothing, then that's something that really you can eliminate. Angela Moore 00:43:10 Right. Angela Moore 00:43:10 You can drink coffee for free at work or at home. Angela Moore 00:43:13 If it's not something that brings you extreme joy. Angela Moore 00:43:15 It's the same with the other example you just. Angela Moore 00:43:19 You just gave of eating out. Angela Moore 00:43:20 If eating out makes you extremely happy, then budget it into your monthly budget. Angela Moore 00:43:25 If it. Angela Moore 00:43:25 If it's something you just do because you just haven't planned well, then, you know, put a plan together because you're right. Angela Moore 00:43:33 I think also the Starbucks example, when you go to Starbucks, you think in your mind, oh, I'm paying $2 for coffee. Angela Moore 00:43:41 No, you're paying $7 for coffee, and then you're getting egg bites. Angela Moore 00:43:45 So you're ending up spending 15, and you're doing that every day. Angela Moore 00:43:48 So how much does that add up to? Angela Moore 00:43:50 And by the way, you don't even remember doing it because it's so habitual that it doesn't even bring any value or joy to your life whatsoever. Shelley Johnson 00:43:58 Sure, yeah. Angela Moore 00:43:59 So what's the point of doing it? Kathy Ticaro 00:44:01 Exactly. Kathy Ticaro 00:44:02 So, Angela, where do people find you? Kathy Ticaro 00:44:04 Do you work with people virtually? Angela Moore 00:44:06 I work with people virtually. Angela Moore 00:44:40 It's just a vibe and so I just, I love it. Shelley Johnson 00:44:44 And it's so needed. Kathy Ticaro 00:44:46 This is going to empower so many. Angela Moore 00:44:47 Women, you know, and to your point, it's just really important to be comfortable with whoever you're working with because you're. Angela Moore 00:44:53 It's almost like getting undressed. Angela Moore 00:44:54 You're opening up all your personal details and stuff. Angela Moore 00:44:57 And it's good to just feel like someone has your back and you can trust them and you can be open about things and they understand, you know. Kathy Ticaro 00:45:07 Yeah. Kathy Ticaro 00:45:08 You don't feel as vulnerable because the world today, especially since the pandemic, I think a lot of people feel really exposed and vulnerable. Angela Moore 00:45:17 Yeah, yeah, it's my, it's. Angela Moore 00:45:20 It's one of my goals to. Angela Moore 00:45:22 It's so important to not beat yourself up about anything. Angela Moore 00:45:27 Because a lot of these things, in a way, they're, they're systemic and it's just a matter of us not having the tools. Angela Moore 00:45:38 And so what it is, is what can I do today to arm myself with the tools and arm myself with the knowledge and the team to help me take one step every day in the right direction? Angela Moore 00:45:52 Because one day I'll wake up and I'll be where I want to be, but I just gotta, you know, have the courage to make a pivot. Shelley Johnson 00:46:02 Right. Shelley Johnson 00:46:03 Take it a day at a time. Kathy Ticaro 00:46:05 I love this. Kathy Ticaro 00:46:07 You've got some terrific insight, Angela. Shelley Johnson 00:46:09 This is terrific.
