I think it was like nineteen seventy or seventy one. He was in Triple A with the Phillies trying to get back. And my brother and I go and play with some sparklers in this like really really dry wheat field at summertime and basically created.

Speaker 2: Yeah, So I am also going to stay away from them. Word of advice kids, Word of advice parents. The Phillies won a three game series against the Padres. Just won that three game series against the Padres split Wednesday's doubleheader. They lost game one, they won Game two. Christopher Sanchez just fantastic again in Game two. He allowed one run in seven innings. Sanchez this season seven and two two point sixty eight e RA, one point seven to six e RA in his last six starts fitting right in with Wheeler sworez Lozardo has been pretty good in his last four two seven eight ERA in his last four. But mcabel struggled in Game one, and that's where I think we should start. It's time for the Parks First Pitch. Mckabele game one guys, an inning and two thirds, two hits, five runs, five walks, three strikeouts, struck out the first two batters you faced, You're going, okay, here we go, and then it all kind of fell apart on him. There was the first time at Phillies starting pitcher had walked consecutive batters with the bases loaded, believe it or not, since Tyler Green in nineteen ninety eight. My goodness, that was a long time ago. You know, I thought it'd be like, you know, seven eight years ago. But the last Phillies starting pitcher did it was last century. That's how long ago it was. So Able is now two and two with the five H four e RA and six starts this season. But the troubling part, guys, is that he's got an eight five six ERA in his last four He's really struggled, and then you know, kind of you know, what do you do now?

Speaker 6: Well, that is the that's the interesting question. That's it's not unusual for a young pitcher to struggle. They there are you know, growing pains. There's a process to becoming a major league pitcher. A solid major league picture. He's got talent. He's had control issues in the minors, especiallylast year, and they reared their head again on Wednesday in Game one. I mean, he he could have been out of the second inning. He had the number nine hitter, oh two he lost him.

Speaker 6: He then he walks too with the base to load the bases, or walks too with the bases loaded, and has Manny Machado two can't put him away Machado bases clearing doubles. So he hurt himself with the walks, the inability to put hit his way, just the poor control.

Speaker 6: Real Mudo after the game, you know, said he was kind of all over the place. He couldn't control it in out, up or down. So I don't think it's unusual for a young guy to have growing pains, you know.

Speaker 6: And if you're leaning toward its best practiced at Triple A, it's because there's a replacement there, and Andrew Painter, and they've been you know, we've been talking about Painters a rival for two years. If he doesn't blow out his elbow, he might be here two years ago, has the Tommy John surgery. They take a very methodical approach with him, bringing him back, building him up, and they point to July ish a loose time frame. Well, we are in the you know the middle of julyish, we are in July?

Speaker 6: Well, recently they sort of tweaked their timetable on Painter, saying he would stay at least through the All Star breaks, so they give him a rest. I just wonder if Mick Gables struggles. You don't want the kid to get buried. If maybe they flip out him and Painter and bring Painter before the All Star break like early next week in San Francisco, like the exact series you and I Todd were pointing to three months ago. So it's a tough do you You know what happens to painters to able confidence if you send them down.

Speaker 6: Give him a little show of faith, stick with Tuesday Night in San Francisco. Maybe he says, my boss is actually believing me. Pitches better, it helps his development. Maybe you send him down because you think it's best for his development and bring Painter. Do you run the play that you wanted to run with Painter and keep him there through the All Star break? Or do you modify and get him here? And you know the whole rotation is pitching so great? Maybe you can be patient and run out Able one more time to me, it's a fascinating call. Asked Rob about it yesterday and he said that, you know, he believes that the plan is still to keep Painter and Triple A through the All Star break. Asked if there's any flexibility in that, he said he didn't think so, but they're going to talk about it. It's a game of adjustments, and sometimes you have to adjust your plan. With players, there's a lot to unpack their Reuben, You've unpacked this stuff many times in your career. I remember your decisions on Aaron Nola wanted to bring him. You were there with Ed Wade when you broke. You know, had to decide about when to bring Cole Hamil's. It ain't easy, you know, talk about tell us about how difficult that decision is, and in particular, what would you do in this case with Able and Painter.

Speaker 4: It is a difficult, difficult decision. But I think you got to think long term here. And I think there's two things, two elements. One, Painter is not really dealing and dominating the way you'd like him to. I think I don't think he's quite sharp enough to bring him into a situation in the major leagues until he's sharp and right where he needs to be as far as his overall development, because you don't want to bring painter when he's not quote unquote ready mentally and physically. And I would rather bring him and wait to bring him so that when he comes, he stays that he's not going anywhere. And I think that's that's an important decision here. I also think there is some element and the way Rob Thompson sort of.

Speaker 5: Works is that he likes to leave guys with the.

Speaker 4: Confidence and give them the confidence. I think that he may very well and they may very well. As an organization, give able another shot at this to to try to write the ship a little bit and send him on his way. Maybe get him four or five innings in his next outing and get him out hopefully they're quality ones, and then get him out and in the hopes that he goes down with a positive attitude and something to lean on when he goes back down to triple A.

Speaker 4: I was in this situation, I would allow him at least one more start on the road to see if he can sort of write the ship and bounce back from that, and and and allow Andrew Painter to get to the point where he is really pitching well so that when he comes to the big leagues, he's confident, uh in his stuff and his overall ability, and he's hitting on all cylinders. That that's the decision I would certainly make in this situation. I know it's I know it's a you know, they're in an era right now where it's about winning baseball games. But in this situation, because of the quality of the other four starters, I really believe that this is the right thing to do.

Speaker 6: And quickly on quickly on Panter. He pitches Thursday night, and I agree he is. He has not lit it up in triple A. I have wandered aloud if he's a little bored there inexcusable about human nature, and so he pitches Thursday night. I wonder if this whole situation even changes a little bit if he absolutely lights it up Thursday night, for for Lehigh Valley, he would be on turn to pitch Tuesday.

Speaker 2: There there there, so Tuesday would be able to start. I guess he'd probably start Tuesday it's not the word. It wouldn't be the worst place for him to go and make that last start before the break. You know, it's San Francisco, great, great pitchers Park. The Giants offense is not exactly lighting up. I think they're bottom ten in baseball and runs per game, So it would kind of set up nice to maybe be that confidence booster going going into the break. But they I do wonder, Guys, they're so they've been so careful with Painter, and they've been very clear on the plan is not to bring him up until after the break. We want him to rest for the break. He made the Future Futures Game NL ross not going to pitch in the in the Futures game. But I wonder if they've community. I assume they've communicated this plan to I'm like, listen, we're gonna shut you down in the break. If you come up, it's gonna be after the break. I wonder if they just wanted him to stick to that plan, what would it do to him. Maybe if they all of a sudden they called him up today and they said listen.

Speaker 6: And there's another factor here. There's another factor here. They this is the month they're going to have to make a trade to help that bullpen. Micky Abel could be a trade ship. I don't personally think a bad start really hurts his trade value. I think the baseball world knows what he is. He's a talented guy. He's going to need time, you know. I think if he was out there dazzling, it might help his trade valve. But I don't think his trade value gets overly diminished with a young pitcher having a bad start. But that's another factor in all this is the trade stuff.

Speaker 4: There's a lot of things that go through your mind as a rookie, especially when you're coming off a really terrible start against the Mets, and he's got that in his head. That's just human nature. It's not an excuse. It's just something that's different he's never gone through it. Maybe he gets back on rotation this next time through and bounces back and you find out a lot about the young man.

Brandon Marsh homered yesterday on Wednesday in the doubleheader against the Podres and he's a little interesting figure as the trade deadline approaches. Now, remember remember where we were in mid April. Brandon Marsh, I didn't realize it was this bad. But before he got hurt, he was batting oh ninety seven on April sixteenth, oh ninety seven, one home run, five RBIs at three eighty seven ops. He goes on the injured list, comes back on May fifth. Here's what Brandon Marsh is hitting since May fifth, three point fifteen ten doubles, one triple, two home runs fifteen RBIs at three seventy two on base percentage eight twenty six ops. That's an interesting development as we talk about the production in the outfield, you know, what do they do and left do they find somebody to you know, is it Otto Camp and Max Kepler and left field? You know, did they just go with Brandon Marsh in center field? Brandon Marsh guys is kind of making a maybe making things a little bit more interesting in terms of how the front office views the trade deadline and maybe kind of like the moving pieces into you know, how they maybe assemble this roster.

And and I think that had and as we get closer and closer to the trade deadline, that's why you sort of have to be patient in some ways to let these guys sort of get their act together. There's a whole half of a season left in eighty freaking games, and so I mean they can There's a lot of damage that can be done and a lot of improvement that could be done and hopefully that's what they get out of and Marsh and Uh, I just feel like it's going to be all the way up until the trade deadline on July thirty first, or whatever it is on that date that you're going to start seeing that you're going to see some action. And honestly, yes, it'd be great to have another bat, but it's the bullpen that needs the real address. And uh, and the fact that Otto Kemp his A bats have.

Hit a couple of balls on the screws yesterday and as a p overall approach is strong. I like a lot of things that are going on in that starting to go in a positive direction in that outfield you are.

It's it's it's vanished because as a sporting society, fan, base media, even probably in some cases some front offices, we view everything through through an NFL prism. We go crazy over one game one week, and that's just not the way baseball works. Sometimes it's about, you know, giving a guy a run. Sometimes you have to exercise patients in this game. I mean, there is urgency, uh and it needs but it has to be balanced with patients. And maybe Marsh is an example of that, because, as you mentioned, Todd, those numbers are good. I was listening to his postgame interview last night on the radio with Scott fran and it was really I thought it was thoughtful. I thought he did a great job on the interview. He was very personable, he really opened up, and you know, those are the type of interviews where fans can connect with you, and I think that's really important. But one thing he said was when he went out on rehab to Lehigh Valley, it was like almost like a rehab for everything, not just him his body, not just a physical rehab. It was a mental rehab, like a spiritual rehab, was a rehab for his soul. So what he's saying is it was kind of a reset and he's come back and done a really good job since then.

Marshall was asked after game two about that base running play that almost ended game one, and I'm not saying it was right or anything, but he did at least have a thought process here. He actually did have a thought process, I guess, which is I'm not saying it was right or anything, but ye had four hours to think of it too.

I don't care what we can talk this to that, to the high heavens, but it was.

I mean, you don't run down the line. And you hit the ball to the pool side, in particular as a right hander, and you don't run down the line. I don't have time for that shit.
