MENTORS Have a Lot to Offer!

[SPEAKER_00]: Today, when I talk a little bit about
[SPEAKER_00]: mentors.
[SPEAKER_00]: And we've kind of gave this episode a title in so much as mentors can change your life forever.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, mentors have the power.
[SPEAKER_00]: Now, check this out.
[SPEAKER_00]: If you let them, if you allow them to so seeds, plant seeds in your life, mentors have the capacity to to all for a great advice to help you move forward.
[SPEAKER_00]: One such mentorship relationship I think about is Mark Zuckerberg,
[SPEAKER_00]: Right, from Facebook, seeking advice when he first started Facebook, he saw advice from Steve Jobs.
[SPEAKER_00]: He saw somebody who was doing great things, somebody who had made great impact, somebody who was making waves in terms of technology.
[SPEAKER_00]: in Mark Zuckerberg or Zuckerberg or say it, if I said it wrong, forgive me, Mark, but the point is Mark saw that there was somebody who was doing great things and he sought to connect to move forward and to get advice from him.
[SPEAKER_00]: Now one of the things that's interesting, what do you think about life?
[SPEAKER_00]: You think about the fact that these platforms such as podcasts, platforms such as YouTube, platforms such as social media has allowed us to get advice from people that we've never met before.
[SPEAKER_00]: How powerful is that that you and I have not met yet, many of you listen to this podcast, whether you're an audio, whether you're on video, many of us have never met in person.
[SPEAKER_00]: but the opportunity for us to connect via technology blows my mind because there may be something that I share with you that you're like, wow, that's an awful light bulb.
[SPEAKER_00]: That's a great idea and check this out.
[SPEAKER_00]: This is why I like you to comment, because sometimes I look in the comments and I get enlightenment, I get information, I'm able to go back and sharpen my gifts based on sometimes the things that you share with me in the comment section.
[SPEAKER_00]: So it's a two-way connection,
[SPEAKER_00]: If you are a rookie, if you are, as they say, wet behind the ears, if you're just starting out, oftentimes we find it to our advantage to seek out mentorship.
[SPEAKER_00]: Now, studies are suggesting research which suggests that individuals who have mentors.
[SPEAKER_00]: And I'll only have mentors but mentors check us out that they listen to.
[SPEAKER_00]: Right, almost like in life you think about your parents and whatever don't Missing your life as you were growing up whether you raised by grandparents whether you were raised by both parents a single parent in foster care system Whatever don't in your life a sibling whatever adult in your life you gained advice from You think about the many times and like you got some sound solid advice That you didn't listen to
[SPEAKER_00]: The device is only good or the results of the device is only good if I check this out.
[SPEAKER_00]: I'm going King James, if I take heed, right?
[SPEAKER_00]: If I receive the advice, if I put the advice into action almost like,
[SPEAKER_00]: Um, there was a guy who was a forgot his name.
[SPEAKER_00]: Man, forget his name right now.
[SPEAKER_00]: We're talking about how awesome it was to have played with Kobe Bryant.
[SPEAKER_00]: And he's talking about how he was young in the league.
[SPEAKER_00]: He was, um, I can't think of a guy's name.
[SPEAKER_00]: I remember it about the time we ended this episode.
[SPEAKER_00]: Um, but we talked about, I mean, but he was talking about how he gained insight from Kobe.
[SPEAKER_00]: And for what some reason or another, he never put it into action until he was almost out of the NBA.
[SPEAKER_00]: Almost as if he said, you know what, I know what I'm doing.
[SPEAKER_00]: Sometimes in life when we get jobs or we're in position, sometimes we think we know what we're doing for getting the off times in life, check this out.
[SPEAKER_00]: What got you to that point won't keep you at that place.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, right there down.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, oftentimes what gets you to a certain point in life, you got a game more knowledge to go higher than that.
[SPEAKER_00]: Sometimes we think that, oh, this is what it took for me to get to this promotion or for this job title and forgetting that in order for you to stay there or even go higher, you got to gain more information or upshoulders with people who have more knowledge than you and put that into play, put that into action, put that from pin to paper to footprints.
[SPEAKER_00]: And the guy was talking about how he got all sorts of information from Kobe, but did not put the advice.
[SPEAKER_00]: into play.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, he talked about work ethic.
[SPEAKER_00]: Chloe talked about share with him how the reasons why he comes to the gym early.
[SPEAKER_00]: He talked about how you all get here at whatever time.
[SPEAKER_00]: And forget that I've already done a full workout before you got here.
[SPEAKER_00]: He was like, well, I want you to do that.
[SPEAKER_00]: And so he was sharing with him, hey, that in life, he's learned how to get to the worm first.
[SPEAKER_00]: He's learned how to get to the spot first before everybody.
[SPEAKER_00]: So he can get high.
[SPEAKER_00]: And so all those gyms he was giving him, the guy said, man,
[SPEAKER_00]: those gems were, how powerful those nuggets were, until I was almost out of the NBA.
[SPEAKER_00]: I bet times in life have we looked back.
[SPEAKER_00]: We said to ourselves, mom's gave some good advice when I was 15, but you thought mom was just talking like an old person.
[SPEAKER_00]: Are you thought dad was just an OG it ain't like that no more pasta nobody talking about or you said to yourself some uncle that you have in your life that they were trying to try to impart knowledge you like man uncle nobody talking about and then all of a sudden you hit the same scenario.
[SPEAKER_00]: Listen, I say this and I say it over and over again, mentors can change your life forever.
[SPEAKER_00]: Now it's interesting because in my experience, most mentors don't offer or put a notice on indeed.com and say apply to be my mentee.
[SPEAKER_00]: Most mentors don't put up a sign and say, hey, look over here.
[SPEAKER_00]: I'm a mentor.
[SPEAKER_00]: Most mentors don't brag about it.
[SPEAKER_00]: Check this out.
[SPEAKER_00]: They just be about it.
[SPEAKER_00]: If you don't understand that vernacular, I apologize.
[SPEAKER_00]: Let me break it down to sound by.
[SPEAKER_00]: Most mentors are just going about putting in that work, going about doing exactly what they were born to do.
[SPEAKER_00]: And you happen to notice that they're good at it.
[SPEAKER_00]: And you go up and ask them, can you mentor me?
[SPEAKER_00]: And they'll say, you know what?
[SPEAKER_00]: I've been looking for, I mean, that's so much looking for.
[SPEAKER_00]: But I've been waiting on somebody.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yes, I will, because oftentimes this happens.
[SPEAKER_00]: I heard this from a gentleman named Maryn Golden,
[SPEAKER_00]: Man, that dude is golden.
[SPEAKER_00]: If you never heard of Myron Golden, Newsflash, go Google, Myron Golden, go search him in YouTube.
[SPEAKER_00]: Myron Golden is that guy.
[SPEAKER_00]: Myron Golden shared this information once again.
[SPEAKER_00]: He's a mentor of mine from afar.
[SPEAKER_00]: I've never met Myron Golden in my life.
[SPEAKER_00]: I came across Myron golden about 18 months ago.
[SPEAKER_00]: I watch this stuff, I see his impact on social media, I see his impact and again, this guy is not doing anything extra to get the spotlight, he's just doing life and he's doing it with excellence and people are catching going and saying, wow, this dude is the truth.
[SPEAKER_00]: This guy is onto something.
[SPEAKER_00]: This guy is living life on another level.
[SPEAKER_00]: Myron Golden mentioned this.
[SPEAKER_00]: I'm not sure if it was a clip that somebody caught of him's doing a speaking engagement.
[SPEAKER_00]: I'm not sure if he was him on a podcast.
[SPEAKER_00]: I'm not sure exactly where I caught this information from myron Golden from.
[SPEAKER_00]: But he talked about an unparafrasing.
[SPEAKER_00]: He talked about the reality that in life,
[SPEAKER_00]: If your mentor doesn't have a mentor and if your mentor is not practicing with the mentoring you own, oftentimes the ceiling is so low that they can only take you so far before you realize that this person is not sharpening their skills.
[SPEAKER_00]: They're not putting into action.
[SPEAKER_00]: In other words, the best mentors are people who are doing what you, what, what they're mentoring you on and who will also take us out, they're getting better by teaching you.
[SPEAKER_00]: How are they getting better by teaching you?
[SPEAKER_00]: It's almost like someone who is in a classroom and a person who's in the seats in the chairs, who's the student asks a question that the teacher gets stumped on.
[SPEAKER_00]: They're like, oh, wow, good question.
[SPEAKER_00]: Let me get back with you tomorrow on that.
[SPEAKER_00]: Man, those are the best teachers in life.
[SPEAKER_00]: You know why?
[SPEAKER_00]: Because they'll go back to the drawing board.
[SPEAKER_00]: They're able to admit that, hey, I don't know the answer.
[SPEAKER_00]: Let's find it together.
[SPEAKER_00]: They'll admit, hey, listen, that's the, I didn't think about it from that angle.
[SPEAKER_00]: Let me do some research on it again.
[SPEAKER_00]: They're studying their sharpening, the best teachers are students.
[SPEAKER_00]: Not so much their students in the classroom, the best teachers are students of life, of their niche, of their field, and they're not complacent where they are.
[SPEAKER_00]: So who is?
[SPEAKER_00]: Who's your mentor?
[SPEAKER_00]: Who's your teacher?
[SPEAKER_00]: Most of the mentors I have in my life right to this day did not reach out to me.
[SPEAKER_00]: I saw them in action.
[SPEAKER_00]: I saw proof of their work.
[SPEAKER_00]: I saw a book that they wrote.
[SPEAKER_00]: I saw a speech that they gave.
[SPEAKER_00]: I saw a review of the impact that they had.
[SPEAKER_00]: Something alone those lines.
[SPEAKER_00]: I researched them, I dug deep.
[SPEAKER_00]: I said, who is this individual?
[SPEAKER_00]: Let me find out more about them and then I reached out.
[SPEAKER_00]: If you're in an area in your life right now, you're trying to go higher.
[SPEAKER_00]: If there's something in your life right now, you're trying to accomplish and you are stumped.
[SPEAKER_00]: Of course we've got YouTube, University of course, there are books, there courses there.
[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, we're in the age now, we're everybody has of course.
[SPEAKER_00]: When the age right now, everybody has some kind of insight, do you know, swipe this, Apple pay this, I get it.
[SPEAKER_00]: And I ain't knocking the hustle at all.
[SPEAKER_00]: In fact, news flash, I got a book, another book, I got an ebook I wrote before I told you about that, but I got a brand new book, no Vimber the 18th.
[SPEAKER_00]: There will be available for early readers, called Go Grow Glow.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's for early learners, early readers.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's a story about a guy named Tony, funny part about that book that I wrote.
[SPEAKER_00]: I had my graphic designer, my illustrator, I should say, paint the picture of Tony using the picture of my son.
[SPEAKER_00]: So as I'm reading the copy of the book to my son, I keep saying Tony did X, Y, and Z.
[SPEAKER_00]: My son looked at me and said, Daddy, quit saying Tony.
[SPEAKER_00]: I said, why?
[SPEAKER_00]: That's Justin.
[SPEAKER_00]: That's my son's name.
[SPEAKER_00]: This is an awesome job.
[SPEAKER_00]: But but the point is, I understand with you have a product.
[SPEAKER_00]: You have something.
[SPEAKER_00]: You think we'll we'll help other people.
[SPEAKER_00]: And you're like, hey, purchase it.
[SPEAKER_00]: Buy it.
[SPEAKER_00]: Here it is.
[SPEAKER_00]: I put some blood.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's waiting tears in it.
[SPEAKER_00]: I get it.
[SPEAKER_00]: But I understand this.
[SPEAKER_00]: Oftentimes, not only does your gift make room for you, but that's biblical.
[SPEAKER_00]: But oftentimes, your gift also will put you in position to influence impact and bless others.
[SPEAKER_00]: So if you're in a place in your life right now, you're looking for a mentor, you're looking for somebody to show you next steps.
[SPEAKER_00]: You're looking for somebody to give you the game number one, don't be afraid to start doing research yourself.
[SPEAKER_00]: That's number one.
[SPEAKER_00]: Don't be lazy.
[SPEAKER_00]: Rule number one, if you're trying to level up, roll up your sleeves, get to work.
[SPEAKER_00]: Shoot him a DM.
[SPEAKER_00]: Shoot them a, you'll be surprised at the amount of people who are like, man, I've got a, I've got a hot bed of knowledge and somebody wanted, I'll give it to them.
[SPEAKER_00]: Don't be afraid to shoot a DM, a message and let them know, hey, I admire you, I see your work, I see what you're doing, and I would love to have a conversation and don't be afraid.
[SPEAKER_00]: Don't be cheap, say, hey, I'll pay you for your time.
[SPEAKER_00]: time is a valuable commodity that we have.
[SPEAKER_00]: I said, let them know.
[SPEAKER_00]: I will pay you for your for your time to consult with me.
[SPEAKER_00]: Number three, I'm done.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, we're doing a new format.
[SPEAKER_00]: We just drop them 15 minutes of knowledge for the next few weeks to see how how things go.
[SPEAKER_00]: But number three, don't sit on the knowledge.
[SPEAKER_00]: Put it into action.
[SPEAKER_00]: Number one, if you look, look at the level up, right?
[SPEAKER_00]: Number one, don't be afraid to do the work yourself.
[SPEAKER_00]: Do the research yourself.
[SPEAKER_00]: But number two, seek out somebody who actually knows more than you, don't let your ego get in the way.
[SPEAKER_00]: Somebody out there, people out there know more than you do.
[SPEAKER_00]: More than you do, don't be afraid to find a mentor or find someone that's doing what you want to do and pay for the time.
[SPEAKER_00]: If they give it to you for free, are you blessed?
[SPEAKER_00]: But then number three don't sit on the knowledge put it into play Run the play put it into action and let the chips fall where they may.
