00:00:00 Speaker 1: You are listening to the Dan Patrick Show on Fox Sports Radio. 00:00:05 Speaker 2: Hour one on this Thursday, Dan and The Dan Eds Dan Patrick Show. Charles Barklay will join us a little later on Mike Florio from NBC Sports Football Night in America on the fervor that continues with Bill Belichick. We're into day three, the Hall of Fame issuing a statement on voting policy. We'll have that for you coming up eight seven seven three DP Show operator Tyler doing nothing but sitting by ready to take your phone calls. We say, good morning, NBC Sports Network and also Peacock, our streaming partner, and we'll come up with the play of the day, poll question, stat of the day, all of that forthcoming. Well, let me start with the Belichick situation. Nothing is changed, going to change except for the Hall of Fame issued a press release a statement on media reports related to Hall of Fame's Class of twenty twenty six. This is what it says on their official stationery. Pro Football Hall of Fame understands and respects the passionate reaction of many fans, media members, and enshrinement of the Hall itself in light of published reports regarding the voting results for the class at twenty twenty six. This is a reminder from the Hall, because the Hall goes on to say each year, the Hall reviews the selection process and the composition of the fifty person selection committee. If it's determined that any member or members violated the selection process bylaws, they understand action will be taken that includes the possibility of such selectors they would not remain a member of the committee moving forward. The selection of a new class is the most important duty the Hall of Fame oversees each year, and the integrity of that process cannot be in question. So why did the Hall of Fame put this out? Is that just for public you know, the public consumption of okay, all right, there's integrity to this process. Reminding the voters there's integrity to this process. Let's not give information who leaked the Bill Belichick information like hold that get out because to me, it seems simple. If Bill Belichick was told last Friday, he's not going to be in the Hall of Fame, Bill probably told a couple of his friends, who probably then told a couple of their friends, and that eventually that news gets out. That would be the logic that I would apply to this that Bill, you know, reportedly was quoted as saying he was disappointed. Now Seth Wickersham has written books about the Patriots, probably has a connection contact with Bill. Now, once again, this is just applying logic to this. Don van Natta very good NFL reporter, and you know it doesn't take long to find somebody who finds somebody who knows the information and who has spoken to Bill Belichick. Now you do have some writers columnists who are coming out and saying, hey, I didn't vote for Bill Belichick. Now if I'm the Hall of Fame, I don't want to hear this. Now nothing's been made official yet, they're supposed to be waiting. So now you're telling me. I for years I would tell you who I voted for for the Heisman, the Hall of Fame or the Heisman. Folks said, hey, let's wait until the voting is over. And so I complied with that because they didn't want me to say, you know, who I did or didn't vote for. They didn't want to spoil, you know, the ceremony. And this isn't the same as the Hall of Fame, but it is in one regard, and that is you have a vote you're told not to, you know, reveal your votes, wait until the process, you know, goes to fruition. So I complied with that. But now you have a columnist and Kansas City a USA Today columnist who were talking about if they did or didn't vote for Bill Belichick. Now, while I applaud you for telling me if you didn't vote for Bill, and that's why I'm okay with that, I mean, it's your vote. I'm okay. I might not like your logic, but it's your vote and I respect whatever you say. However, you came to that conclusion you're not voting for Bill Belichick. And as I told you, somebody who votes talked to me. That was Tuesday night into Wednesday morning. We talked twice, and there were people who just assume Bill Belichick was going in and didn't speak up on his behalf. So there's a lot to factor in here. But the Hall of Fame wants the voters to make sure that they don't reveal their votes until these people are informed. Look the and I mentioned this because the voter said to me, Look, it's flawed with what we did. You narrow it down to five candidates. Now you ask the selection committee. Now we narrow it down to three, Well, you got to get eighty percent. Well if you get to five, why don't we let five in? Or if you get to five, how about the top three vote getters get in? And it has nothing to do with eighty percent, like have something to show for this process, and I don't know if they're going to. All we know is Bill Belichick is not getting in. Tom Brady was on a Seattle radio station and he had this to say about the snub with his former coach. 00:05:40 Speaker 3: I don't understand it. I mean, I was with them every day. If he's not a first bout of Hall of Famer, there's really no coach that should ever be a first bout Hall of Famer, which is completely ridiculous because people deserve it and he's incredible. There's no coach I'd ever want to play. I'd rather play for it. If I'm taking one coach to go out there to win a Super Bowl, give me one season, I'm taking Bill Belichick. So that's enough set. There's nothing outside of that. You know, again, when he comes down the votes and popularity and all that, like, you know, then welcome to the world of voting and you may as well go, you know, try out for the Oscars or whatever, and you know, get a big panel to tell you if you're good or not. 00:06:18 Speaker 2: That's Tom Brady on Seattle Sports seven ten. And this logic, I don't like this logic. Well, Bill's going to get in. I want to get these other people in. If you're going to tell me that Ken Anderson's getting in and else Greenwood they're getting in, and Roger Craig's getting in, great, then we accomplish something here. Now it's at the expense of Bill Belichick. But you can't kind of brush off Belichick, where then you have a candidate like Eli Manning and Eli reportedly is not going to be in the Hall of Fame again this year. But the reason why Eli is going to get into the Hall of Fame he beat Bill Belichick and Tom Brady. So you beat the best quarterback the best coach, but the best coach is not getting in on the first ballot. It's just tricky. But there's so much attached to this because if I said, who got into the Hall of Fame last year, we move on, right, I don't know if we go, oh, of course such and such and such and we move on, and we'll move on after this to the next class. The guys who will get in if it's Drew Brees, Larry Fitzgerald, who else is getting in? But this is tricky because Belichick doesn't get in. And if he got in, now those other coaches who are waiting to go into the Hall of Fame, now they got to wait another year at least. And you know that's where I hate seeing that this is supposed to be a celebratory moment for the NFL, and it's a misstep. But the voters voted. I don't like the process of it. You have every right if you don't want to vote Bill Belichick. You think he's a cheater, and he's gonna I'm gonna get you know, my pound of flesh here. Okay, if you tell me that there should be transparency with this, just tell me you did or you didn't. I don't like the witch hunt, but there are people who and I want to apologize to Bill Pollian because he wasn't sure if he voted for Bill Belichick, which sounded a little suspicious coming from a former Colt's front office member and a Hall of Famer. I don't know how you forget who you voted for. There's only five candidates there. It was a while ago, to be fair. Yeah, well, and if he voted for Bill, then I apologize because I thought he would be one of the eleven in there. Because these grudges they don't die. But it's day three. I thought Belichick's had pretty good week, all things considered. He's kind of unified everybody, and all of a sudden he becomes a sympathetic figure. I told you that. 00:09:09 Speaker 4: You know. 00:09:09 Speaker 2: One of the voters told me there was a sense, is Bill going to come back and coach again? Can we vote somebody in who's coming back to coach again? I mean you, you just can't view it that way. Man, he might come back, he not coming back to the NFL. Okay, And then I don't know if it was by coincidence or not, but then there was an article talking about Bill's not going to be able to get back into the NFL. He's too toxic. Someone just comes out now that he's too toxic. This should have nothing to do with North Carolina. This should have nothing to do with his girlfriend. There should have nothing to do with his record at North Carolina. This is about Belichick and what he did. I want to know. Somebody says, you know, I just didn't like him. He was mean to me. If that's your reason, then tell me tell us now, nobody's going to say that, man, he hurt my feelings. Man, if that's the case, I got my feelings hurt a few times. Buy some by Bob Knight and Don Shula and Bill Parcells and Pat Riley. They're still Hall of famers to me, Yes, Marvin. 00:10:24 Speaker 5: Bill Belichich should get in the Hall of Fame. He's the coach. He's one and one as the Browns head coach in the playoffs. He's got a I should get you way in period. 00:10:36 Speaker 2: Yeah, five hundred record. Huh okay, thank you Marvin. Yes, Tom. 00:10:40 Speaker 6: It's hard to quantify, but what is the exact level of backlash that would cause the Hall of Fame to have to put out a statement or writers to have to explain their point yes or no? Like, what is the I'd left to know behind closed doors? What was the moment who or what happened where we got to put out a statement or I got to let people know and write a column that I did or didn't pick belichant it just happened. 00:10:59 Speaker 2: That's why they had put out a statement at the conversations. 00:11:02 Speaker 6: But you know why, why did the Hall of Fame? What made them decide we got to put out a press. 00:11:07 Speaker 2: Release because Bill Belichick didn't get in on the first ballot. And now there are you know, people behind the scenes talking about this. This got revealed, this got leaked. Now all of a sudden, people are writing columns. Now, all of a sudden, you know who did and didn't vote for Belichick. So this doesn't happen with the Hall of Fame. When's the last time you went, man, there's a leak in the Hall of Fame, But you have one now, and the Pro Football Hall of Fame wants to stop this because, hey, the integrity of the Hall of Fame, and really, you got to look at the families involved in that. There's so many people. It's not just one person, it's a family, it's teammates, front office. I mean, so many people can be attached to one candidate. And that's where you have to be fair to everybody here. 00:11:56 Speaker 7: Yeah, Paulie, when I saw the press release by the Hall of Fame, it made me wonder if this story is not over and that was the Hall of Fame saying we're onto something here and this is step one of the cleanup. 00:12:10 Speaker 2: I have a text into somebody I trust with the Hall of Fame, and I'm trying to find out. I know the system is flawed the last two years, and they were going to change it before this year. From what I'm told, more than likely it's going to change now. I don't know what that means because I was told that Wednesday morning. Is it going to change where we get five candidates? Is there going to be one coaching candidate, and then there's going to be a contributor and then there's going to be three players. How about we just have five people go in that you know a coach is going to go in, You're going to have your contributor, and then you're going to have three players who retired a long, long time ago. That's how it should be. Celebrate this, and they're not going to. That's a sad part of it. 00:13:01 Speaker 8: Yeah, And there's something that really cracks me up about the NFL that it is there any sport that is more unsure of what it's doing day to day than the I mean, the voting process in the Hall of Fame keeps changing because it can't figure out we got this backlog, so now we only let in five people, then we got to vote this way. 00:13:21 Speaker 2: No, we got to change it to do that way. 00:13:22 Speaker 8: That's just to figure out who they're honoring in the Hall of Fame. That's not even getting into what is a catch and why can you do this? 00:13:29 Speaker 2: But you can't do that. This year we're focusing on holding. 00:13:31 Speaker 8: Next year we're going to focus on past interference. 00:13:34 Speaker 2: And they still prosper and they do. 00:13:36 Speaker 8: Is that this like odd chaos sort of part of the success where you never really know what it's going to be that year. 00:13:43 Speaker 2: What would we be talking about this week? Probably the match up here, maybe Lebron going back to Cleveland for the final time. Yannis being traded. The NFL is in the news. That's why, when you know, we were talking about college football and what's going on. Big Ten college football loved that they got attention we were talking about college football instead of them being buried with the NFL playoffs. I don't know if the NFL now you know, we've talked about this before. Any publicity is good publicity. I've never subscribed to that. This is not a good week, I think for the NFL. But you're talking about the process, you're bringing back candidates. Nobody's talking about el C Greenwood or Kenny Anderson or Roger Craig. If you don't have this. But because of this, now all of a sudden, somebody goes, was Kenny Anderson good? Who's else Greenwood? Well that's finny because nobody really is talking about them. They're just talking about Bill Belichick and like, why who did they let in instead of these guys? Yeah? What they let these guys in for? I'm trying to fight the good fight for Kenny Anderson to get in or else Greenwood or Roger Craig. Yeah, Pully, I. 00:14:57 Speaker 7: Don't know if the Hall of Fame in the NFL had the work. I think the NFL media and the people that the NFL media had the rough week. They think it's a bunch of old guy reporters that are upset with Bill Belichick with how they treated him. That's how the casual person think. 00:15:13 Speaker 2: Once again, if you say I didn't vote for him because he's a cheater, Okay? Is Tom Brady a cheater? And are you going to hold him to the same standard? And what about Robert Kraft and if not, then why as long as you have logic behind this, this is your vote. Great, I'm not voting for Craft, I'm not voting for Brady and not voting for Belichick. I think they cheated. If that's how you feel and you're transparent, I got no argument. It's your opinion, it's your vote. It's not hey, you got to agree with everybody else. Yeah, Marvin, is this going away before we go to San Francisco? No, because all the media will be in San Francisco and then we're going to bring up Seattle against New England and Malcolm Butler in the rematch, And no, it's not going to go away. 00:16:08 Speaker 8: Yes, well, that's one of the things that I think the reason that it won't go away is because there isn't necessarily a massive hook to the Super Bowl. 00:16:17 Speaker 2: The rematch is cool, but nobody that was. 00:16:20 Speaker 8: There in that first game is still here in this one, so it's not really a rematch. 00:16:24 Speaker 2: Let's I'll take a break. I'm going to talk about the storylines. Sam Darnold's going to join us on the program tomorrow, but and he's the first USC quarterback to play in the Super Bowl. About it's crazy. Really yeah, that's crazy. Yeah yeah. 00:16:41 Speaker 7: Paul Sanchez two AFC title games, Yeah close. 00:16:44 Speaker 2: Yeah yeah. Man, Carson Palmer, Nope, never got there. No, that's a shame. No, No, how about we take a break. We'll get phone calls. Settle on our pole question of booty Wow. 00:16:58 Speaker 5: I was gonna say, Mitch Mustang, but go ahead. 00:17:00 Speaker 2: Oh you uh. Parkley a little bit later on, and Mike Floria will have more on the Pro Football Hall of Fame. He is Pro Football Talk Live co host Mike Florio contributor to Football Night in America. Before we get to Belichick, I had a problem with Sean Payton revealing medical information about bo Nicks. Bo Nicks certainly had a problem with it. Your thoughts when you heard Sean Payton talking about previous surgeries with bo Nix's ankle. 00:18:21 Speaker 10: I was surprised that he did, But I'm not surprised when Sean Payton says something that ruffles feathers, whether it's with the Jets or with whoever. Sean Payton tends to say what he says and then he'll deal with the fallout later. But with bo Nicks, it definitely seemed to be an issue. Bo Nicks apparently called his own press conference to address the situation. And I didn't think it was funny when Peyton said he had surgery here here, here, whatever, and bo Nick says he doesn't know anything about the surgers that has Like Bo he knows everything about every surger you've ever had because he scouted you and drafted you and every but he gets all that information, so they know. But it does seem to be a little something going on between Peyton and bo Nicks, and fortunately they have some time to smooth things over before they get back to work. 00:19:12 Speaker 2: Go to neutral corners. The Hall of Fame feels the need to issue a press release. 00:19:19 Speaker 10: Why, well, I don't know, Dan, And it's funny. I was on radio in Seattle when the press release came out and they said to me, oh, we've just gotten a statement from the Hall of Fame. And I thought it was a bit like okay, yeah, yeah, And then I said, no, it's real. I thought, oh my god, they're putting Belichick in, Like why would you issue a statement? And then when I saw the statement, like what is this about? They're threatening to strip the voting privileges from fifty people who don't get paid, who spend hours every year. It's a vanity license plate. I mean, it really is. Nobody's getting a job because they're a Pro Football Hall of Fame voter. Nobody is holding onto the job because ooh I'm a Hall of Fame voter. It's just something you can you know, talk to your friends and family about And hey, I'm a pro football Hall of Fame voter, and you don't get anything for it other than a hassle. And now they're threatening to take it away because of some vague failure to comply with the bylaws. And I just posted something a little while ago, Dan, The best I can tell is they're not pleased with what Armando Salgero said to you yesterday about what went on in the room. Because I got the bylaws, I found them, had somebody send them to me. There's a specific clause in there that says you have to maintain strict confidence about anything that is said in the meeting, so you're not allowed to talk about it. But this process has put people in a difficult position where fans, media, those of us who weren't in the room, we want to know what the hell happened to lead to this result. So I thought the whole thing was a mistake by the Hall of Fame. It doesn't surprise me because the Hall of Fame created this mess that now the fifty voters have to deal with. 00:21:01 Speaker 2: Okay, but how do they change this? As one of the voters told me on Wednesday morning. We know the system is flawed. We have to change it. What are they going to change it too. 00:21:12 Speaker 10: Dan, here's the easiest fix. They just need to go back to an upper down vote for the finalists. That's how it used to be. And Vajagu Grigorian, who posted at the Kansas City Star website his reasoning for not voting for Belichick. 00:21:27 Speaker 2: He said, wait, min hold on, Mike, go back to it. Just a thumb's upper thumbs down. There was no vote used to. 00:21:35 Speaker 10: It used to be. Well, no, I mean you voted secretly, but it used to be when you had your pool of finalists, they would go through each one. Once we got down to the actual finalists, whatever it was, five to eight, however many, it would be upper down. We vote yes or no. And if you got eighty percent of the vote, currently with fifty voters, you get forty, you're in. So Vajague Grigorian, who didn't vote for Belichick, wrote in his column, if it was just a straight yes or no for Bill Belichick, yes, I'm voted for Bill Belichick. He should be in. But they've created this weird thing. And I'll try to be as concise as possible to the extent that I even understand it. They have five people jammed into the same bucket, and for this year it was Robert Kraft, Bill Belichick, Els Greenwood, Ken Anderson, and Roger Craig three from the Seniors Committee contributor nominee Craft coaching nominee Belichick. Five of them, you pick three. You don't do up or down for each one. Every voter picks three. And Gregorian's explanation is, well, for these three Senior Committees, this is their only shot. These guys, Greenwood, Anderson, and Craig, this is it for them. If they don't get in now, they're never getting in. So he voted for them because his thinking is Belichick's going to get in next year. So that process that has changed what used to be yes or no, up or down. That makes it harder for the finalists to get in. And it's why we saw a smaller class last year. Of whoever was in that bucket. Last year, Sterling Sharp was the only one who got in. They all should have a straight upper down vote. It shouldn't be this weird. Pick three out of five and then we'll see who gets eighty percent. 00:23:22 Speaker 2: Yeah, because if you get to the point where the contributor and the coach are getting in, and then you have three players that survive to get to this point. And as the voter said, you know, you got five candidates that are worthy, and now we got to pick three out of the five and they have to get eighty percent. It's just a flawed system. Why not put all five in if you got one from that category, one from that category and three former players. 00:23:51 Speaker 10: Here's my theory, Dan, I think that the Hall of Fame was sensitive to criticism from people like Deon Sanders that too many people are getting in. But raising the bar when you've already had a bar here, it's not fair to the next class of candidates to say, oh, oh uh, we're raising the bar higher, even though we've put all these other people in under a different standard, we're now raising the bar higher. The only solution to Dion's concern, and we've been advocating this for three years now, create an upper room of the Hall of Fame the best of the best. We have a running list that we post every year at the time the Hall of Fame and Trimeate ceremony happens, updated whether or not there's any new ones. This year that are the no brainer might drop these guys are in And the sad part about this is Belichick would be on that list. He's a no brainer, might drop best to the best, and he couldn't get through the door the first time around. That's what I think makes this so frustrating to most people. 00:24:55 Speaker 2: But if you were going to pinpoint the biggest reason why Belichick is not going into the Hall of Fame this year, it's what. 00:25:02 Speaker 10: Well, people don't like him. I think that's it. People don't like him. He's a jerk. Is that a surprise? But I think we need to be able to compartmentalize. He's one of the greatest coaches of all time and the fact that he is a jerk objectively speaking or subjectively speaking, my opinion he's a jerk. Others have that opinion. That's part of what made him great. He'd rip into Tom Brady in front of the meeting room and scare the hell out of everybody, and they'd all, we better, we better do our jobs, or we're not going to have jobs. So he's clearly one of the greatest coaches of all time. And I think it's easy to find reasons if you don't like someone. If you're looking for a reason, Oh it's spygate. Oh he needs to sit out of here because of spygate, or you know whatever else they want to. Oh, look at his Look at his record without Tom Brady, look at his record with Tom Brady. Tom Brady made Bill Belichick. Like, you can come up with any reason, and people just subjectively don't like certain people. And I think that when you have a unreasonably secret process where no one's allowed, it's like a paper conclave. Let mean, come on, why why isn't it transparent? When you take away transparency, people can hide behind all sorts of things and then they just and you don't even have to vote. 00:26:16 Speaker 2: No. 00:26:16 Speaker 10: That's one of the other problems with this process. All I didn't vote against Bill Belichick. I just didn't vote for him. I never said no to Bill Belichick. So I think I think, and I'll defer to Armando because he presented him and he told you yesterday. Spygates seemed to be the reason. But I think that I think it was just at least eleven of the fifty didn't like him, and so they sunk their teeth into anything they could to justify it. 00:26:41 Speaker 2: Mike Florio, Pro Football Talk Live co host, what does this mean for Tom Brady when he comes becomes eligible. 00:26:49 Speaker 10: I don't think it means anything. Tom Brady should be a mic drop, no brainer, first ballot, Upper Room Hall of Famer, and he's in a different category. See he'll be in the modern era player category that ultimately gets down to fifteen when they start the meeting, and then they cut it to ten, and then they cut it to seven. And I think you vote for five of the seven, just the same ideas the other thing we talked about, and you have to get eighty percent on the five of the seven. And I don't know is somebody going to say, well, you know, Brady's definitely going to get an OVO to somebody else instead, So they need to get back to upper down. And if it's a straight up or down vote Brad, I mean, who would vote no to Tom Brady? To flight Gate was a small blip on the radar screen, and I think it was overblown. I think the evidence should have been deemed to be inconclusive. And I think the whole idea of treating this objective weird. It's always been in the rule book. Range of air pressure Who the hell cares we wanted to be able to throw the football. Who cares how much it's in the damn football? So I think that shouldn't matter. And I also think that Brady will benefit from this controversy. Be even more careful when Brady's up to not step in this pile of crap. Again. 00:28:05 Speaker 2: I brought this up. I brought it up a couple of times. Now I know Brady lied to the commissioner. That's why he got in trouble. Aaron Rodgers told me that he over inflated footballs. Nobody brought up labeled him a cheater. 00:28:21 Speaker 10: Yeah, Dan, this numbers just pulled out of thin air. It's the numbers. It's the recommended inflation from Wilson twelve point five to thirteen. I remember when this first happened. My wife was saying, well, what's going on with these footballs. It's like, well, Patriots are in trouble because they supposedly took air to the footballs. Well why they do that? Well, because it makes it easier to hold the football. Well what does that do? What makes it easier to throw the football? Well, isn't that what they want? Like, don't we want the whole thing is just bizarre, and it was, and it's been reported over and over again. This was we didn't hit them hard enough for Spygate, and there was a ball of owner and others in the league that wanted another pound to flesh out of the New England Patriots. And the weird part about it is that one didn't stick to Belichick at all. He managed to push that whole thing over to Brady. So the only thing they really have on Belichick is spygate from nineteen years ago. And if you just if you throw away two thousand and seven and prior everything since then, is still more than enough for him to walk into the Hall of Fame on the first try. 00:29:26 Speaker 2: And I don't know if Robert Kraft is getting in. I'm still amazed that he's not in when you look at his resume. Why has he been held outside the pearly gates. 00:29:37 Speaker 10: Well, if Jerry Jones is in, Robert Craft is in. It's that simple. Now, Robert Kraft is trying to get in under this new flawed process, and I won't be surprised if he didn't get in. I know there are some out there thinking that Robert Kraft has this grand conspiracy where he's going to keep Belichick out and he's going to get himself in. I thinks it'll be hard for any of those five to get in, just be one at the end of the day of the five like last year that get to eighty percent. But the problem with the Hall of Fame is there are too many worthy candidates and the process entails. It's not apples to apples. I mean, it's apples to oranges, to car batteries to you know. I mean, it's it's impossible to compare all the different positions, all the different contributions, and it's all funneled into this log jam that's almost impossible to bust out of. So it's a very imperfect process, as highlighted by everything we've seen and heard the past two days. 00:30:39 Speaker 2: Eli Manning reportedly will have to wait another year. 00:30:42 Speaker 10: Your thoughts, well, I've doesn't surprise me because of the current process and because beyond those two years when they went to the Super Bowl and won it, and look he he had two of the biggest moments in Super Bowl history, two of the greatest throats. The throat to Mario Manningham in Super Bowl forty six is not nearly as remembered as it should be. That saved the game for the Giants that day. And obviously we know about the Tyreethrow but you know, when you look at the balance of his career, you look at his numbers, all the stuff that people get rightfully caught up in when it's time to compare careers. Was he truly one of the best of his era that deserved I mean, there's a lot of great quarterbacks from his era, so it doesn't surprise me. It's taken him a couple of tries. Will he get in one of these days? I think so. I think he should be there. Jim Plunkett's the only starting quarterback with two Super Bowl wins who hasn't made it. Phil Simms has two Super Bowl wins but obviously didn't play in Super Bowl twenty five. Roethlisberger's got too, he'll presumably get in. But yeah, I think Eli should be in. But it doesn't surprise me. It's going to take a little while for him to get there. 00:31:46 Speaker 2: Philip Rivers get bumped back another year because he came out of retirement. 00:31:50 Speaker 10: No No, Dan. The moment that he landed on the active roster for the Indianapolis Colts his five year clock reset. He's got to wait five years. They consider it. 00:32:01 Speaker 2: He could have five more kids by then. 00:32:04 Speaker 10: Oh maybe head coach of an NFL team by then too. I guess that could help his candidacy, But you know, I don't look. I think Philip Rivers was a great quarterback and it was a great story this year. 00:32:13 Speaker 2: But Mike, if Mike Tomlin is, he can be eligible next year for the Hall of Fame. Correct, right, Well, so coaches one year. 00:32:24 Speaker 10: Coaches now have to be out one year. And the problem is there's already a logjam of coaches. Mike Homgrin should be in, Mike Shanahan should be in. Now, Mike Tomlin's going to be in the mix. And there's a separate committee that serves up one candidate one So who's going to be next year? Is it gonna be Tomlin? Is he gonna be Belichick? Are they going to decide? Well, you know what, if they're not going to put Belichick in, maybe we don't put him up there. I think given the blowback and the reaction, I think Belichick sails in next year. I think it's a no brainer. The only question Dan Ponder this. Michael Hawley made this point yesterday. Will he show up at the ceremony when he gets in, or will he do what terall Owens did and do his own thing on that day that he joins the rest of the immortals in Canton. 00:33:13 Speaker 2: Maybe he sends his girlfriend. I would She might have she might give a better speech than him. 00:33:21 Speaker 10: Well, should Everinely be the one who presents him now, I'd put my money on that if and when he gets in and when he gets in, But I could see him being mad enough about this that he wouldn't show up. I still think he has a sufficient appreciation of NFL and football history that he would not refuse to show up. But I think he'd at least think about it. 00:33:43 Speaker 2: Thank you, Mike has always we appreciated. We'll see in San Francisco. Thanks Dan, good talking anybody, Mike Florio, Pro Football Talk Live co host and contributor to Football Night in America. Yeah, I didn't think of that. That does Belichick say, Hey, I'm not showing up. I'll hold my own celebratory day, give a speech to the people that really matter most to me. I'd still I'd send my girlfriend. She'll bring a flamethrower. That'd be awesome, all right, take a break. Phone calls coming up Charles Barkley at the top of the hour. Only on NBC in Peacock, which is where you can find this program also NBC Sports Network. Your phone calls eight seven to seven three. DP show email address Dpadanpatrick dot com, Twitter handle at dpshow the Seahawks and Patriots. The line is still four and a half for Seattle over under still forty five and a half. Charles Barkley always joins us prior to the Super Bowl, and I always tell him, Charles, just give me your money, because I know you're gonna lose it. But if you give it to me, then I'll hold on to it and then I'll give it back to you because he usually doesn't pick the right team. So Charles will join us coming upon pole question for the final hour of the program. 00:35:26 Speaker 8: Yeah, we're sticking with the three that we got up there right now, right now. The biggest storyline heading into the big game is Sam Darnold's redemption. The last place of that is a rematch of Seahawks Patriots. More of an underdog. Patriots are running away with that one, and people would rather have Drew Brees's career than Eli Manning. 00:35:45 Speaker 2: I think you still get. 00:35:46 Speaker 8: You get sustained excellence, healthy salary, and you also get a ring that's pretty. 00:35:52 Speaker 2: Good one in New Mexico. Hey one, what's on your mind? 00:36:00 Speaker 11: Hey, good morning, guys. 00:36:00 Speaker 4: How are you all good? 00:36:01 Speaker 2: What's on your mind? 00:36:04 Speaker 4: Hey? 00:36:04 Speaker 11: So, Dan, you made a comment a little bit ago about make up your mind. Either Belichick elevates Eli or Eli brings you down, but maybe it's both. There's fifty individual voters in the Hall of Fame, and maybe some of them thought Eli brought Bill down, and maybe some of them thought, you know, it was the other way around, and it elevated Eli. And that's why they voted the way they did. 00:36:27 Speaker 2: Well, you know who loses the credit there that they richly deserve as the defensive front for the Giants won that Super Bowl. They were incredible. They beat the hell out of Brady. Eli came up with a couple of great throws. Cannot deny that. But Eli will go into the Hall of Fame. But we're using the he beat Brady and Belichick to go into the Hall of Fame. So yeah, I mean, it's tricky when it comes to the Hall of Fame. Idiot, everybody has a vote. I'm fine with your vote. Tell me how you came to this conclusion. I don't think that's asking too much. This is a guy who's in the Hall of Fame. Charles Sparkley joining us on the program. How were you told you were going into the Hall of Fame. 00:37:16 Speaker 12: I got a call. They told me they were going to vote, and I got a call. It's a very important call. It's emotional. You call the people close to you and give them a heads up. And it's obviously specially when you're like a first ballot Hall of Famer. That was the disgrace. What happened to Bill Belichick first and foremost. And let me tell you something else that. 00:37:44 Speaker 4: You know. 00:37:46 Speaker 12: The writer who wrote why he didn't vote for Belichick that made it even worse in my opinion, because he said, well, I'm gonna vote for these older guys to get them and this might be their last chance. Well, I believe this. If you haven't made the Hall of Fame in X amount of time, you just in the Hall of pretty good. If you don't, like I say, it's either yes. 00:38:15 Speaker 4: Or no. I think Dean said. 00:38:16 Speaker 12: It a few years ago, and I agree with like, if you have to really think about guys and guys who've been on these committees for double digit years and they finally get in, I'm like, I don't mean no disrespect to you guys. 00:38:30 Speaker 4: You were really, really good. You just wasn't a Hall of Famer. 00:38:33 Speaker 12: I mean, it's a very simple process in my opinion, but Bill should be automatically because now do you put Tom Coffin in, you put Mike Tomlin in, you put Harbaugh in. They only won one Super Bowl. A guy who's won six have been to nine if he's not a first ball in the Hall of Famer. That's what the problem arises. Now, you can't let any of those guys in and like Mike Tomlin is a Hall of Famer, but you can't put him on the first ballot. Now, same thing with my good friend Sean Payton, who I love and respect, Like, well, you didn't put a guy who won six who've been to nine. 00:39:13 Speaker 4: That's crazy. 00:39:15 Speaker 2: Yeah, it's tricky. I don't know. You mentioned Deon Sanders. Would you be in favor of some designation or place in the Hall of Fame for first ballot Hall of Famers? Dion talked about maybe do you give a different jacket, maybe a different shade of gold with first ballot Hall of Famers, or do you give a designation of maybe first, you know, second floor, penthouse, whatever it might be. 00:39:43 Speaker 12: I have no problem with that. Listen, I'm a Hall of Famer, Dan. I'm not at the table with Michael Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, lebron Kobe, those guys at a different table than me. That's just the way it is. I don't take it personally. I know that I had a hell of a career, but I just don't. 00:40:05 Speaker 2: But you're a first ballot Hall of Famer, weren't you. 00:40:08 Speaker 12: I am, But I'm not at the same table as those guys. Those guys won multiple championships. 00:40:12 Speaker 2: That's what separates Well, how many tables are you away from them? 00:40:17 Speaker 4: Well, I don't look at it like that. We're just not at the same table. 00:40:22 Speaker 2: Yeah, I think you underrate yourself. 00:40:24 Speaker 4: No, no, dude, I'm very good where I was. 00:40:27 Speaker 12: But I'm saying guys who win multiple multiple, like guys who win one championship, they're at a different table than guys who won multiple. That's no slight. Like there's a bunch of coaches who won a championship. They're not at the tailor at the club. They're not the same table with Belichick, Chuck Nole, Lombardi, guys like that. And that's not a slight their first ballot Hall of famers. But we're not all created equal. 00:40:57 Speaker 2: Okay, But it's Scottie Pippen at the big table that you're not at. No, but he won multimon championships. 00:41:05 Speaker 4: Yeah, but he wasn't. 00:41:06 Speaker 12: He wasn't driving the bus like Michael and Bird and Magic and those guys were. 00:41:10 Speaker 2: So James James Worthy is not at the big table. 00:41:15 Speaker 4: He's not. 00:41:16 Speaker 2: Okay, Okay, So you have to be the alpha dog, you have to be the number one guy. 00:41:23 Speaker 4: Okay, but it's just my opinion. Yeah, it's just my opinion. 00:41:27 Speaker 12: Like guys who are on multiple championship team who were role players. I don't hold out against him, but they're not Hall of Famous number one to start with. But guys who were the man you're in, you're out, who carried the heavy carr it the water. 00:41:41 Speaker 4: Those guys at a different table. 00:41:43 Speaker 2: I saw or read where you called out NBC with this uh Michael Jordan. The interview that they did. 00:41:50 Speaker 4: I didn't call them out, you know reads that way. 00:41:54 Speaker 2: It reads that way that give the time. 00:41:57 Speaker 4: It's like people were calling me about me. 00:42:00 Speaker 2: It's a bad look for NBC. It's just a it's a bad look. 00:42:03 Speaker 12: It's a bad look to do one interview then splice it up throughout the season. 00:42:09 Speaker 4: I agree, you know, it's a bad look. 00:42:11 Speaker 12: Like they couldn't fly down there once a month to sit down with Michael for an hour. 00:42:17 Speaker 2: I suggested Reggie Miller sit down with Michael Jordan and do a couple of uh interviews with Michael along the. 00:42:24 Speaker 4: Season once a month. Dan, I. 00:42:29 Speaker 2: Would have gone down there once a month. 00:42:31 Speaker 12: I mean to do an interview in August and splice it up it's just the same interview in January and February. That's a bad look because I thought it was great that we had Michael Jordan back in the NBA. But now you look and I'm like, oh, he's wearing the same outfit from August. But they couldn't listen. It's great to have Michael back in the NBA, butut fly somebody down there once a month. Because the other thing is there's so much has happened in the NBA, Like what he talked about in August has nothing to do with January. 00:43:09 Speaker 2: Yeah, because he could be talking about Giannis right now. He could be talking about does Lebron go back to Cleveland and his career there? 00:43:16 Speaker 4: Right on? Like once a month, fly down to Florida. Give him. 00:43:21 Speaker 12: Hey, you guys got forty five minutes to an hour, ask him something relevant. Also, ask him stuff that's relevant as sports. You know, there's a lot of stuff going on as sport. Well, would you love to hear about Michael's opinion on Bill Belichick? 00:43:37 Speaker 2: Yeah? Come on, yes, Yeah, But I ask you this every year, do you want to just give me your money that you would be betting on the Super Bowl? Since you always lose your Super Bowl bet, then I'll hold it for you and then give it back to you at the end of the game. 00:43:50 Speaker 12: Then, as a matter of fact, I think I'm on a five year winning are I am, I've been, and I'm Ryan like, right, we ride Secretariat. I've had Seattle the last two weeks. I'm riding them until the damn wills come off. Okay, I think I think going back to that last game when they won, I think edcept when they won the last regular season game. I'm all in on San Francisco and I think there's something happened to Sam Donald going back, remember when they had the Rams and that that crazy game like a couple months ago. I think something clicked in him. He's not the same quarterback that gave him a joke the energy. But I'm riding that damn horse. I'm riding Secretariat all the way. And listen, you know how I feel about Seattle, the most underrated sports city in the universe. 00:44:46 Speaker 4: But I'm all in on the Hawks. 00:44:49 Speaker 2: Okay, why didn't you lead the charge you get a NBA team back in Seattle. 00:44:55 Speaker 12: Well, I know they want that drastically, but I think the problem they got man who called me. 00:45:01 Speaker 4: Now let him up. How the maids are here? Sorry? 00:45:17 Speaker 2: Your your maids plural? 00:45:20 Speaker 4: Are there a couple? My boy Steve and his wife. They're amazing couple. 00:45:25 Speaker 2: How much money are you going to bet on the Super Bowl? 00:45:31 Speaker 12: Probably about two fifty? 00:45:34 Speaker 4: About two fifty? 00:45:34 Speaker 2: What's the most you've bet? 00:45:38 Speaker 4: Half a million? 00:45:41 Speaker 2: You lost that one. 00:45:42 Speaker 12: I didn't win. I didn't win. My boy Belichick against the Rams. He wanted me big money. Oh okay, all yeah, they want me big money in I'm all in on Belichick, man, he's my guy. 00:45:57 Speaker 4: I hate this. I hate this the way this stuff is heard. 00:46:00 Speaker 12: It out to be honest with you, because this shit, like, you know, you know what, it's unanimous. Everybody's pissed, you know, somebody's screwed up. I haven't heard one person with any common since say like this is just a travesty, and it's unfortunate because. 00:46:18 Speaker 4: The bad thing. 00:46:19 Speaker 12: About it is what those other guys rightfully sold are gonna be having. 00:46:27 Speaker 4: Who's gonna go in the Hall of Fame. 00:46:30 Speaker 12: That thing is that that elephant in the back of the room, like Belchick should have been here, and it's gonna take away from their shin and I hate that. 00:46:39 Speaker 2: Charles Barkley Hall of Famer inside the NBA on ESPN, the uh you guys talked about this last night. With Lebron playing in Cleveland, can you see a scenario where next year he's in Cleveland and his career. 00:46:54 Speaker 12: I think there's this only scenario. I think obviously the Lakers are done with him out there this year. They're gonna move into the Luca of Austin Reeves' situation, which rightfully so, I think his only logical play is going to be going back to Cleveland. Listen, I'm not opposed to him getting traded to Cleveland and next week doing the trade deadline because the East is up for grabs. The East is one to percent up for grabs, And you can't tell me if Lebron went back to Cleveland right now, they wouldn't be the favorite of the East. 00:47:33 Speaker 2: Yeah, but what am I giving up to the Lakers? See, I'd rather sign him and not have to compensate the Lakers in the off season. 00:47:41 Speaker 12: Well that's fair, but could you give up something to help the Lakers? They got an a bondus of big men in Cleveland between Jared Allen and Mobiley. Could you give up one of those guys. I think your team would still be just as good. 00:48:00 Speaker 2: I think if the Lakers got Evan Mobley for Lebron, they would be fun. 00:48:05 Speaker 12: Well, because this kid's gonna be a really good player for the next ten years. If they just lose Lebron, they don't get anything for him, it could be a win win for both teams. 00:48:16 Speaker 4: Because you know, you give. 00:48:17 Speaker 12: Me Evan Mobley, Luca uh and Austin Reeves going forward, my team is better. 00:48:22 Speaker 4: Yeah. 00:48:23 Speaker 12: And but also, man, I got zero idea. I mean, I know the Pistons are the favorite. I know the Pistons are the favorite, But you tell me this, if Lebron went back to Cleveland with Donovan, Mitchell Garland, Jared Allen, would they be the favorites in the East? 00:48:43 Speaker 2: Be close? 00:48:44 Speaker 4: It'd be close. 00:48:45 Speaker 2: Yeah, it'll be close. 00:48:47 Speaker 12: Sometimes you got to roll the dice. You gotta roll the dice because because the Lakers are not any good and the Cavs they probably would have favorite going into the season, but right now you see they're not. 00:48:58 Speaker 4: They're struggling. 00:49:00 Speaker 2: Let me get your thoughts on Yannis and now that he wants out. Reportedly once out, Golden State seems like, if I'm going to take another swing of trying to do something with Steph Curry in the next two years, why don't you got I think four first round draft picks. You could trade Kaminga and you could throw in somebody else. Maybe can you trade Jimmy Butler's contract? Like, can you make this work that Golden State would get y honest? Or do you see him going elsewhere? 00:49:29 Speaker 12: Great question, I'm not sure to be honest with you. But if I'm I take a big swing at Yannis. He's a terrific player, he's a terrific person. I take a swing. I take a swing at him. I really do. If I'm if I'm any team, because he's gonna make you relevant because right now, Oklahoma City in Denver to me are of two favorite teams. No, I don't think anybody's in their class. Man, the East is so crazy. Then the Jason Tatum and Elephant in the rooms. He's gonna come back. That might make the Celtics a favorite. 00:50:10 Speaker 2: Yeah, but Milwaukee doesn't want to trade him in the East. 00:50:14 Speaker 12: No, I'm not saying that. I'm saying, first of all, they got to make the trade. What's best for their team. 00:50:19 Speaker 4: You can't. 00:50:20 Speaker 12: You gotta do what's the best for your team going forward. You can't worry about if he stays in the East. Yeah, say, you got to make the best because you got to You know basketball is gonna be played this year, next year in the UF. You got to do It's like, let's say, hypothetically the Celtics offered Jalen Brown for Jannis. Hell, yeah, you do that, even if Y'renis is at the same conference. 00:50:47 Speaker 4: Jalen Brown is a hell of a player, Okay, but you can't. 00:50:52 Speaker 12: You can't worry about You got to do like if we get Jalen Brown for the next ten years or I'm in Milwaukee, I'm like, okay, but you can't worry about where he goes. 00:51:03 Speaker 4: You got to make the best deal for your franchise. 00:51:06 Speaker 2: How did you tell the Sixers you wanted out? 00:51:10 Speaker 12: I never got a chance, man, was really funny. I was on trial because I had punched that guy in Milwaukee. So I had spent a week on trial in Milwaukee. I was acquitted, acquitted, But what was crazy? We spent the week because it was a very It should have never went to trial, to be honest with you, So the guys me and my attorney had wrote a letter to the Sixers that we worked on all week because I didn't want to alienate the fans in Philly. So I got home. I got home Friday night from Milwaukee. I got acquitted in the afternoon, flew back to Philly, and I had made up my mind we were gonna send a letter Monday morning. What's really funny, I forgot that I had ordered to set a paying golf club. 00:52:07 Speaker 4: It was on my front yard when I got back to Philly that Friday night. 00:52:12 Speaker 12: And then Sunday morning, I get a call from the Sixers and I got traded to Phoenix. And but we were gonna h send that letter Monday morning. So yes, because I didn't want to ailiate the fans, because the fans of Philly had always treated me great. But I had had enough. I had went through three years again, traded every week. 00:52:34 Speaker 2: But did the trial have something to that expedite them winning you out of town? 00:52:38 Speaker 4: No? No, because I was acquitted. 00:52:40 Speaker 2: Dan, oh, I know, I know that, but I don't know if you know the Sixers, but. 00:52:46 Speaker 12: Just an idiotic organization back I mean, do we had the number one pick in the draft? I think my career would be totally different if the Sixers who had the number one pick in the draft had a taken Brad Dougherty, who I loved as a player and had a hell of a career. If I'd have had Brad Dougherty for ten years, I think my career in Philly would be totally different. But they traded it the number one pick to Cleveland for Roy Hampson, who's. 00:53:17 Speaker 4: A good dude. 00:53:17 Speaker 2: Is a good dude, but he's. 00:53:20 Speaker 4: He's not Brad Doughty. It was really crazy, to be honest with you. 00:53:26 Speaker 12: They traded Moses in that same trade that nobody ever talked about. They traded Moses to the Bullets for Jeff Rulin, who I never got to play with. So after having the number one pick. 00:53:38 Speaker 4: I lose Moses, who ended up playing like another three or four years. 00:53:42 Speaker 12: So I lost Moses, who was like my dad, who's the most important person in my basketball career. So I had the number one I went to bed with the number one pick. I woke up with Roy Hampson, who good dude, and then they traded Moses for Jeff Ruler, guy never even played. 00:54:00 Speaker 4: That's how stupid the sitters were back then. 00:54:03 Speaker 2: Thanks for joining us. Good luck on Super Bowl Sunday. It's always you, like Seattle, right, I'm gonna like with you, like, how's that too many people? I don't like to go when everybody said, oh, it's a no brainer, but you're the one putting up two hundred and fifty thousand dollars. I'm just putting up something even more priceless my reputation. 00:54:26 Speaker 4: Well, I'll tell you what. 00:54:28 Speaker 12: Sean McVay had me nervous because he had two chances to kick a field goal that would have covered the port spread. I'm so glad he went for that touchdown twice. But I ain't gonna lie Dan. I was sweating, brother, like, go for it. I'm screaming at the TV. Go for it, go for it, go for it, because if he kicks a field goal, they don't cover. And I'm like, wow, So that's gambling though, brother. 00:54:52 Speaker 2: Oh, I know, and that's why they call it gambling. 00:54:54 Speaker 4: Thank you, Chuck, all right, brother, thanks for having you guys. Be safe, Thank you. 00:54:58 Speaker 2: Brother. Charles Barkley, Hall of Famer Inside the NBA
