Speaker 1: I would think that if indeed he is out for the season, they might look to do something. They've got all kinds of options that they can turn to. That's the beauty of the Dodgers. They're versatile. Welcome everyone to the Thursday edition of Fair Territory, the live edition, and we are joined, as you can see, by a very special co host. Today, we're going to talk about Clayton Kershaw. We're going to talk about the Atlanta Braves. But Scott, we have some breaking news this morning. Let's get into that first.

Speaker 2: Yeah, let's do it. Ken, good to see you. Not fun news, but we'll see what happens investigation wise. So I'm just going to read the statement from the Cleveland Guardians. They've been notified by Major League Baseball that their pitcher they acquired this offseason and has put in almost ninety innings of work, Luis Ortiz, has been placed on leave per an agreement with the players Association due to an ongoing league investigation. The Guardians are not permitted to comment further at this time. But Ken, what else can you tell us?

Speaker 1: This is non disciplinary paid leave, that's what technically this is. So he hasn't been disciplined. He is getting paid while this investigation takes place, and I reported shortly a time ago that this is related to gambling. I reported this with Zach Misel of the Athletic It is a gambling related investigation. Beyond that, I don't know details. I don't know what specifically occurred here, but we do know that in recent years the league has taken a harsh stance on gambling, while of course embracing gambling companies as media companies have done, as really the entire sports world has done. Twenty twenty four, San Diego Padres infielder Tucupita Marcano was banned for life for betting on his own team. League also suspended four other players for a year for betting on baseball. And remember the issue with MLB umpire Pat Hoberg. He was also fired earlier this year after it was learned that he shared sports betting accounts with a friend who bet on baseball games. Again, we do not know the nature of what Ortiz is alleged to have done, if anything, This is merely an investigation at this point, but we do know that in recent history sports, recent history, these things have taken place.

Speaker 2: And we can talk about the impact on the Cleveland Guardians right now, Ken, because this is a team that's in a little bit of trouble right now. They're forty and forty four, they're tied for second place in the division. I would say forget about the division. The Tigers look like a juggernaut this year. They're twelve and a half games out of first. The Guardians won the division last year, made it to the ALCS, and they're in danger of not making the playoffs and perhaps being a seller if they keep this up.

Speaker 1: They are, they've lost six straight or teas. By the way, we're supposed to start tonight, and if you remember Scott, he was the centerpiece of the return they got in the Spencer Horowicz trade, the three team trade with Toronto and Pittsburgh. He was a guy that they relied on, or we're going to rely on quite a bit now. He was scheduled to start tonight. He is on this non disciplinary paid leave through at least the end of the All Star break, so it's conceivable he could be back quickly, or it's conceivable, of course, this could be a bension type situation. Certainly not a good thing for the Guardians. Their strength is their starting pitching. It's kind of taking a step forward in the last two months or so. It's young, but it's been good. Offense has been their problem, and if he is lost or teased for any length of time, it's certainly going to be difficult for them even to compete for a wildcard spot.

Speaker 2: And remember last year this team made it to the ALCS with an historically amazing bullpen. It is hard to get that kind of production in back to back years, even if it's the same guys. Right the bullpen volatility is definitely a thing for Cleveland.

Speaker 2: But right now they're within a few games of a wildcard spot.

Speaker 3: Things could change in the next few weeks.

Speaker 2: I don't know what the buyer seller situation looks like for this team in terms of what they'd have to offer, but I don't think they're going to give up too easily. If anything, don't you think they'd be a seller right around the trade deadline if they feel like at that point they're more than say, three games away from a wildcard spot.

Speaker 1: I do. And the question then would be what do they sell? Do they simply sell players on expiring contracts, Carlos Santana the most prominent among them, or do they maybe move Immanuel class A as well, their closer, who has not been as good this year as he was last year, but certainly would have value in a trade type scenario. So we're not there yet with them. This news this morning certainly throws a wrench into their plans, but well, no more, I would assume in the weeks ahead.

Speaker 2: Ken, Let's get to some celebratory news now. Clayton Kershaw getting to three thousand career strikeouts last night, and it looks like the Dodgers really did it well. It was on his one hundredth pitch of the evening and then he's removed from the game, so the timing worked out perfectly with him they pull off a victory. But what do you think about Clayton Kershaw's career and the fact that, despite quite a few injuries in the last several seasons, at thirty seven years old, he's an effective big league startner and able to pull off an accomplishment that has not just a lot to do with swing and miss, but with longevity.

Speaker 1: Absolutely, he is the twentieth pittuer to reach three thousand strikeouts and only the fourth left hander. That's the key thing here for me. Of course, in our sport, like in life, right handers are dominant, so left handed pitchers race more right handed hitters than left handed and it makes it that much more difficult. We've got Sabathia, we've got Randy Johnson, Steve Carlton, and now Clayton Kershaw. It was a beautiful moment last night, the kind only baseball can give us. The College strike three was kind of amazing. But of course they had these situation too with Max Munsey who had just gotten hurt his knee a couple of plays before, and that kind of, at least in my mind, sort of cast a pall on it. We're going to learn more about Munsey today. He is going for an MRI. It did not look good. Obviously, he's a huge player for the Dodgers. He's had a huge resurgence. But the story was Kershaw and just to see him persevere through as you said, major surgeries, all kinds of difficulties, and to reach this point and to see him a push this at home, it was indeed special. And of course Scott, it raises the question is this guy, the last pitcher to reach three thousand? Will he be the last one? And Andy McCollum, my colleague at The Athletic, wrote a book titled The Last of His Kind about Kershaw, and it might prove to be absolutely the case that he is the last of his kind. I want to show you the list of active strikeout leaders beyond Kershaw. I'm not counting Verlander and Schurzer here. These are the guys who might have a chance to get to three thousand. Chris Sale, if healthy's certainly a shot two hundred and twenty five strikeouts just last year. Then Garrett Cole and Charlie Morton, you, Darvish and Kevin Gossman. I don't expect any of them to necessarily get there. Cole would have the best chance, Charlie's near the end of his career. You who knows when he'll even pitch again. He's supposedly on the comeback trail, and Gosmin's just a little bit away, or a lot of way, I should say. So, it's a unique accomplishment. It's something that will help define Kershaw going forward. As Fabian Ardaia wrote in The Athletic today, it's another sentence on his Hall of Fame plaque, and again to see the celebration last night and just the electricity in the crowd it was coming through your television. That was very cool.

Speaker 2: Yeah, when it comes to the names that you were just alluding to, it's hard to see anything past Chrisselle I mean, and that really depends on how long chrissell wants to go. He is still pitching in the prime of his career, you have to call it. He's just not able to stay on the field consistently for the last five six seasons, Ken, but he's got the stuff to be able to create enough swing and myths for what I think is at least another few years. It's just a matter of how much longer he wants to go and will his body hold up. Sale is out right now, which kind of glides us perfectly into our next topic. So the Atlanta Braves deal with yet another starting pitching injury, and this one really stinks. Spencer Schwellenbach is a fractured elbow and obviously he's going to miss significant time here. Sale is out until at least August. At this point, Rinaldo Lopez hasn't pitched for most of the season dealing with a shoulder injury. Can the list goes on and on for a team that has significantly underachieved as it.

Speaker 3: Is, Where are we at with the Braves?

Speaker 1: We're in a tough spot, no question. And you didn't even mention Scott the offensive regressions that have taken place with Michael Harris second and Alsie Albi's and others, and the whole team has just had kind of a general regression and a general malaise caused by the injuries, of course, and that's part of it. But where are we with them? We certainly can't look at them as heavy buyers, and I can say that fairly comfortably, even though we're four weeks out from the deadline. They're a team that may look to improve a little bit, but my goodness, there's so much working against them. I can't imagine they're going to be heavy buyers. Now the question then becomes would they be sellers? And yes, I would expect that if they are out of contention, players aren't expiring contracts like Marcel Azuna Rice a local see is, they would be guys that the Braves would certainly trade. At the same time, neither of those guys has really had a great season, as Zoon as dealing with a hip problem, so you're not gonna get a lot back for them. There has been speculation about a number of other Braves under club control. I don't expect them to do anything along those lines, at least not before the deadline. And I'll tell you why. With players under club control, you can take them into the offseason, and at that point you can expand the market. I'll use Sean Murphy as an example. If the Braves wanted to trade Sean Murphy right now, certainly they'd have takers. Now, they're a team that prefers to carry two quality catchers, so they're not even interested in trading Sean Murphy. But let's again play out the hypothetical. Take this into the off season, and then Sean Murphy you have him available, and you can include a great number more teams, a significantly greater number of teams. And that is the whole point when you're trading players under club control. If you go back to last year's deadline, Scot Gary Crochet, the Boston Red Sox weren't in. It was the Dodgers, the Phillies, the Braves, a little bit, but it wasn't the Red Sox. But in the offseason, the Red Sox certainly became a player. So you can expand your possibilities in the offseason. And I want to show you also how many players the Braves have under club control and the reason that they're not going to break up this team because they have so many guys who are going to be with them in the near future. I'm not gonna go through the entire list, but you can see from twenty twenty six to thirty three their core is under control in one form or another. I'm including club options here, assuming they would pick them up. So you've got your best players a Kunya through twenty eight, Olsen through thirty, Riley through thirty three. You're not gonna blow this up. You're gonna keep trying to win and build around these guys. And obviously this year it looks like it's going to be lost year.

Speaker 2: And the thing is, you get to a point where I know alex Anthropolis is going to look and and try and say, hey, if we're within x amount of games, maybe five games, then let's give this a shot. I've done magic at the trade deadline before he has That's how they want a twenty twenty one World Series title.

Speaker 2: I mean, you're missing such a huge chunk of your rotation for probably a long period of time. They're in a pretty similar distance in terms of how far out they are to the Orioles in the American League, and we've been talking about them as a seller for a while now, so I guess the difference here is that the Orioles have a lot to sell, Like you mis mentioned, might be a pretty quiet trade deadline for the Braves on the buying and the selling front, which is obviously not fun for fans.

Speaker 1: Well, I would say is arguably the best picture of this generation. He's right there with Verlander, insurs or you can slice it anyway you'd like. The best left hander of all time. Question is a really interesting one because, of course the sports spans generations, so guys like Lefty Grove and Sandy Kofax, Steve Carlton, they all pitched in different eras. This era has been one in which it's been difficult for pitchers to stay healthy and yet they've enhanced their abilities through outside sources and all kinds of ways, pitch design, all different things that have kind of given pictures an edge, and you have to look at it in that context as well. But I certainly would say that Kershaw ranks among the greatest left handers of all time. That is fair to say without any question. And I mentioned earlier the other three thousand strikeout left handers, Carlton and CC Sabathia, and of course Randy Johnson. It's a conversation, a debate that we can have, and you can look at ERA plus and break it down that way. But let's just say he's right in the.

Now, at that point, do you dfa DJ or do you make him a utility guy? I'm not sure. I believe he has one more year left. At fifteen million, it's a lot of money to eat. But at the same time, if you're trying to win the World Series, I don't know how DJ necessarily fits as a bench player, especially when you're making that kind of money. So it's a question that's going to persist through the deadline. What the Yankees do. They clearly need another infielder. Who that might be, we don't know yet.

One quick follow up for you on this one, Ken, It's a name that's been linked to the Yankees for at least the last couple years, and I want to bring it up again. Do you think this is the time that the Rockies will finally give up Ryan McMahon in a trade. He was off to a super slow start. He's been a little bit better lately. I got to see where he's at as a bat, but I do think he could help this Team's kind of a solid all around player. Change of scenery would probably help him as well. It's more a matter of do we think the Rockies will part with a guy who they signed long term. They operate a little bit more or a lot more mom and pop shop and say, I like this guy, Let's keep him, even though he could make us better long term if we trade him.

Speaker 1: The question is the Rockies, as you said, Scott, will they move? I don't know. They are a team that is the only team in the Mountain time zone. They are a team that seems to operate in an insular way, kind of removed from the rest of the industry. It's weird, honestly, and they're a team that needs some change, no question about that. Will the current general manager, Bill Schmidt, under the current ownership be in position or prepared to make that change with a guy like McMahon institute a series of changes, trade some other people as well. I tend to doubt it based on their track record, but I am sure that Brian Cashman will at least be calling Bill Schmidt and saying, hey, what about McMahon.

He said, I didn't see it specified in your article, so just curious.

Speaker 1: I didn't specify it my article, and I don't have the numbers in front of me, so I'm not going to get too deep into that. It's difficult to do live here, but it's Freddy Freeman. And I know Cubs fans were outraged. I didn't have Bush on there. I didn't have sa Zukie on there. I didn't have Boyd on there. Please, everybody's gonna get there eventually. We all know this. The guys who need to get there are going to get there. So Michael Bush certainly is having a really good year, and he's a really good player. Is he Freddie Freeman in terms of status yet in the game. No, And Freddie Freeman has had a really good year as well. Maybe not to his normal standards, but I believe his OPS is getting up around nine hundred again, or is around nine hundred, not like he's embarrassing himself. The good the Dude of the Week that goes to all of the fans who voted Jacob Wilson from the Athletics the starting shortstop for the American League in the All Star Game. Great choice. Jacob Wilson has had an amazing first half as a rookie an unusual player, a high contact guy, not a power guy. But he's been brilliant and he beat out Bobby Wood Jr. And Gunnar Henderson and even Jeremy Pania, who has had before getting hurt in MVP type season for the Houston Astros. So props to the fans for electing Jacob Wilson's on that plays for the Sacramento Athletics, the West Sacramento Athletics, the Vegas Oakland Sacramento Athletics. He doesn't play for one of the name teams in our sport. So Jacob Wilson, good for you for making the All Star team and all the fans who voted for them. I'm glad to see people are paying attention, and people have every reason to pay attention because in this day and age, we have so much information in front of us. We can watch pretty much every game through the MLB app So, hey, that was really cool to see West Coast team, not even a prominent team, and this guy gets elected over some really big names due to the week the fans for electing Jacob Wilson as well as Jacob himself. All right, now let's go to the next phase of this conversation. All right, dork of the week. Now, we always have a number of possibilities, and this guy I'm gonna name not the worst human being on earth, but he did something that got him banned from Chase Field for the rest of the season, and something that I think is an example to other fans out there who might have silly ideas about interfering with games and just conducting themselves in an untoward fashion. Overall. I'm talking about Dave mccaskell, Diamondback season ticket holder, who was banned for the rest of the season by the team because he interfered with a potential home run this week. It wasn't the first time he did it. He says he did it only two times. The Diamondbacks said it's been multiple times regardless, Dave, can we just be happy to watch the game. I know people like catching foul balls and home runs and that's cool. And Dave basically said he meant no harm to the Diamondbacks. He was quoted in The Athletic as saying this, he doesn't sound like a bad guy at all, but cool it just cool it. We don't need fans reaching over repeatedly if it happens once. Okay, it's an accident, you got excited. But when a guy does it repeatedly, his band to me is actually well deserved. So Dave McCaskill, dork of the Week. I don't mean to pick on you. You've been picked on enough. You've been banned for the rest of the season. But come on, man, keep your hands to yourself. Do you remember your parents saying that it's a good thing to follow, good advice to follow when you're in a major league park. I'm going to talk about one thing here that we didn't get to discuss in the other portion of the show, and it comes from my notes column today. Adulus Garcia of the Texas Rangers. I mentioned him. You can see the little teaser there, Adulas on the move question mark. And you wouldn't think that the Rangers would be trading the guy who is the MVP of the twenty twenty three ALCS, who's been an All Star a couple of times. But Garcia has struggled this season at times. Remember, they sat him down for a few days because he was going to work on some mechanical things. They wanted him to do that, and he did, and he was better in the month of June after returning to the lineup. So you say, well, why would the Rangers trade him. They're sort of teetering here. They've been a huge disappointment. Their offense has been a disappointment, and they've got some players on expiring contracts they can trade. If they sell Patrick Corbyn would be won a bunch of relievers as well, but Adolas Garcia, given the shortage of right handed hitters in the market, he probably would bring the most of any of those people. So there is a possibility that the Rangers would do this. And there's another factor here as well. Adolas Garcia this season earning ten point five million not a horrible amount for a player who performed like he did in twenty three. It's not so great for a guy who might be looking at two straight years of sub seven hundred opss. If that's the case, If that's how it ends up, Adolos Garcia conceivably, I don't know that this would happen, but conceivably could be a non tender. Care the Rangers might not want to pay him more than ten and a half million. He would get a raise in arbitration players generally do, and they might not want to go to twelve million for a guy, as I said, coming off to sub seven hundred ops's. Another team might see it differently. Another team might look at a resurgence by him and say, let's go give them a change of scenery. We're good, we want Adulas Garcia and all that he brings. So to me, it's a possibility.

Speaker 1: The Rangers obviously have to get into a position where they feel like it's better to sell than to try to enhance their team. If you remember, last year, they did buy, but they were coming off a World Series title.
