Episode 29 | "Talk Ya Sh*t" (feat. Jermaine Dupri & Shad Moss)
Happy New Year from everyone over at New Rory & Mal. Now that the holidays are over and we’re all back at work and miserable again, let's get the year started off right!
Rory & Mal catch up with Jermaine Dupri at his legendary studio compound while in Atlanta. They sit down and start to discuss JD’s early journey into hip hop, starting with his breaking of the duo Kriss Kross (16:42). He goes on to explain how he met the late Lisa “LeftEye” Lopes, and how he helped break the group that would become TLC (25:19). In the middle of his stories, JD gets an unexpected disturbing call from his protege Shad “Bow Wow” Moss, who insists on pulling up and joining the interview to get a few things off his chest (36:20). Bow Wow comes in and joins JD in telling the behind the scenes story of breaking his career, as well as elevating So So Def. JD (and of course Bow Wow himself) start giving Bow Wow his flowers for his career (1:11:06), and this leads into a discussion of what the blogs have against him that they won’t cover his current successes. This also activates JD’s urge to get his shit off, who doubles down on his challenge to Puff Daddy for a Verzuz, and explains why he feels underrated (1:24:16). They also touch on other careers JD has broken, their opinion on aging relevance in Hip-Hop (and basketball), + more!

00:00:01 Speaker 1: No, well, Confessions Too. 00:00:07 Speaker 2: Was partially all my story Part two, Part two, but that part one that you're talking about was just like me just thinking of what could possibly be happening, if you know, to goddess and Ush's. 00:00:27 Speaker 3: Position, Okay, what you prefer one or two? 00:00:30 Speaker 4: Because I have this debate all the time with like real R and B heads, and of course two is the smash, but I think Confessions one might be. 00:00:38 Speaker 3: Better as time is went. 00:00:41 Speaker 4: From not a hit record standpoint, just from a music standpoint. 00:00:45 Speaker 2: I mean a story because it's something. The first version is called all bad. It's not called confessions. That's what it's. You know, it's called all bad. So the all bad, the story of all bad. I think it is better than two. But two was just so you know, deliberate about you know, a guy having a girlfriend, getting a girl pregnant, and you know it ain't much you can much wiggle room in there, but this every time I was in La, i was with my ex girlfriend, it's so many layers of that that, you know what I mean, And I just was running away with it like it's like. 00:01:26 Speaker 5: Oh I could say this too, Oh I can say it's so yeah. 00:01:30 Speaker 4: So then how many times have you had to lie to the woman in your personal life that now it. 00:01:35 Speaker 3: Was just lyrics. I was talking shit, that wasn't true. 00:01:39 Speaker 5: I mean, well, I think, well, let me take that back. 00:01:42 Speaker 4: Take that back, definitely say babe, that was come on, I was just writing. 00:01:47 Speaker 1: It was just for the art, never for other people. 00:01:53 Speaker 6: Me. 00:01:54 Speaker 2: Yeah, my lyrics. I have had to take that, like, you know, I forgot to be rapping. 00:01:59 Speaker 7: Sometimes you can do it's easier to do it for other artists. 00:02:03 Speaker 8: I'm just writing, but when it's your record, it's like, nah. 00:02:06 Speaker 5: Come on, you know it was my record, and people. 00:02:09 Speaker 2: Like, so, yeah, you was doing what. 00:02:12 Speaker 5: Yeah, I'm like, I thought I was writing for us. 00:02:17 Speaker 4: Just throw us under the bus, Like now I think he's coming trying to get into this world of his head, like come on, you know. 00:02:24 Speaker 7: I mean this Yeah yeah, yeah, I just you know, let's go to let's talk about the beginning of JD because a lot of people don't I mean, I'm sure you talked about it before, but a lot of people don't know that you actually lived in New York for a while. 00:02:37 Speaker 2: Yeah, like thirteen fourteen fifteen, I stayed in Brooklyn Easy High School. 00:02:47 Speaker 3: You went to you from Crown Heights. Why Atlanta keep trying to claim. 00:02:49 Speaker 5: Him from New York Street? 00:02:51 Speaker 2: I didn't. I didn't go to high school. I was I actually had a tutor, okay, and I was staying with actually Chad Elliott, and Chad actually lived in Brooklyn. 00:03:01 Speaker 5: That's where I was basically staying with him. 00:03:03 Speaker 2: But yeah, that's what I actually, you know, that was a good learning crash course for me to be in New York at that period of time and for me to be that young, to be able to stay there and just see what was going on and just to be around. You know, it's a thing when you don't have money and you, like I guess you're poor, you see a lot and you don't get into no trouble because don'tbody want to rob you. You could just go wherever you want to go, you know what I mean? So I got I got opportunity, you know, go to Fort Green. 00:03:44 Speaker 8: You wouldn't go there. 00:03:45 Speaker 5: Now, get haircuts from knaps. 00:03:48 Speaker 3: Oh, it's really nice and for Green, you know what I mean? 00:03:51 Speaker 2: Like, you know, I got chased by the Decepticons. 00:03:55 Speaker 3: Wow? 00:03:56 Speaker 8: Uh, how do you put that in the Army record? 00:04:02 Speaker 5: Nobody, girl knows. 00:04:04 Speaker 2: What I'm talking about because yeah, I think yesterday, back yesterday, we were in the group chat about all the homies and he tried to post the pictures on my hot like bad dress days or whatever, and I had all polo pull up to head Chel and I was like, Nigga, want decept to come. 00:04:24 Speaker 8: He didn't know what you was talking about? 00:04:25 Speaker 6: Her? 00:04:27 Speaker 2: Never heard of low life forms in here? 00:04:29 Speaker 6: Right? 00:04:30 Speaker 8: You keep forgetting who you're talking to you I forgot. 00:04:32 Speaker 3: Yeah, he definitely don't know. 00:04:34 Speaker 7: I don't know something about that. The low had bunch of people don't know. They probably listening like. 00:04:39 Speaker 3: Yeah, they don't even know what the sad low. 00:04:42 Speaker 4: So in case you ain't know, so what that actually means at the end of the day, that's some real Brooklyn booster ship. 00:04:48 Speaker 5: Super Brooklyn. I ain't know what it was, by the way, I. 00:04:51 Speaker 2: Just I learned like this, like yeah, yeah, because I mean here in Atlanta, we wore a lot of polo, and Polo was like the thing here. So you know, me going to New York and having on polo and and I was little niggas was trying to get oh yeah, I'm gonna get ribbed. 00:05:11 Speaker 5: For some polo. 00:05:12 Speaker 8: Yeah. 00:05:13 Speaker 4: Absolutely, that was Currncy. What brought you back to Atlanta at that point? 00:05:18 Speaker 5: I mean, I was, I was still I lived here. 00:05:20 Speaker 2: I just was. I was just with Chad, and I mean, my my, you know, I was like Johnny five at at that age. I was just like, if it was hip hop, I had to be right there wherever it was at. 00:05:34 Speaker 5: So it was some hip hop going on. 00:05:36 Speaker 6: I was. 00:05:37 Speaker 5: So when my mother, I was like, Yo, can I go stay with Chad? 00:05:41 Speaker 2: My mom was like, yeah, go ahead about when I went. And I stayed up there and I and I and I ended up liking it and I wanted to be there more. 00:05:51 Speaker 5: And I just stayed, you know what I mean. 00:05:53 Speaker 2: And it's crazy because, like I said, the it's almost like slum Dog Millionaire for me because it's like the things that started happening to me after that. 00:06:05 Speaker 5: I knew what to do based on me living and you know what I mean, so or I. 00:06:10 Speaker 2: Knew what the answers was based on me being there. So it's like it's really weird, like that type of situation. 00:06:17 Speaker 4: You think that more on a business side or a music side of that time in Brooklyn and how it resonated with you was I I'm saying from taking that time in Brooklyn, how did to go into the music moving forward to how going to the business as far as reading people, being in New York City and being in a whole new city as far as music goes as well, I'm coming back to Atlanta. 00:06:37 Speaker 2: I mean really for me, it was like I guess I ended up building relationships that I didn't even know that I was That's what I'm saying. I didn't even know that I was going I could. I mean, you know, I was trying to produce, like I think fifteen probably yeah, fifteen, I me and Chad was making beats and what he was trying to make even have no equipment. We just had records, right, We just had a whole bunch of records. 00:07:04 Speaker 5: His mom had records. 00:07:06 Speaker 2: And I think it was like downtown record store. Is that the neameborhood? It was either it was Downtown Records or something like that. 00:07:17 Speaker 5: It was a record store in Brooklyn. 00:07:19 Speaker 2: That that's where I first saw a break beat and I saw a breakbeat collection and I bought the collection and it's still in there somewhere right there. But that's when I just started my love for like, oh, I'm gonna make beats, but I ain't really I still didn't have no drum machine. And I used to just like play the records and just like think in my head, like we're gonna sample this. 00:07:44 Speaker 5: And like I said, oddly enough. 00:07:48 Speaker 2: It was just be like I just meet somebody, like I meet different DJs, this that person. 00:07:54 Speaker 5: And then once I started making records, I had. 00:07:58 Speaker 2: These these these relationships already just that that was just right there based on me being you know, being a young dude. So I guess it worked out for both business and and you know what I mean, and and and on the artist. 00:08:13 Speaker 3: Side, what were y'all listening to with that? 00:08:15 Speaker 2: So, I mean I was listening to like whatever was you know, the radio was, you know, I guess b LS, Magic, Crap Attack. I never missed that. 00:08:33 Speaker 6: You know. 00:08:34 Speaker 2: I was in this house tape taping the radio shows and so anything everything that was, everything that was coming out I was listening to. It was like, like I said, I was just a sponge. It was never like it wasn't one hip hop record that I didn't know. They wont one hip hop record that came out that I wasn't like up on even like and like it's it's weird because, like I say, even with the whole like I started djaying. 00:09:04 Speaker 5: Around that same time, like about. 00:09:06 Speaker 8: Fifteen, where it was like house parties. 00:09:09 Speaker 7: Or no never DJ real justj okay, okayj. 00:09:17 Speaker 5: DJ being Chad was DJing in the house and. 00:09:23 Speaker 2: Living on Eastern Parkway. I learned Jamaican records that I would have never course don't. We don't have that, so you know, the main I think the biggest record when I stayed in Brooklyn was cool mm hmm. 00:09:42 Speaker 8: They don't know nothing about that, you know what. 00:09:46 Speaker 2: We go outside I'm talking about. 00:09:48 Speaker 5: I'm like, what the hell is this? 00:09:51 Speaker 2: Every block boom boom boom, so you know, but that's what I'm saying. So all of this stuff is like these all these little pieces that I didn't actually know that I it's gonna have to that that I could use or you know, or what was gonna happen with me with a producer. But it was just it definitely was a crazy learning I mean school basically. 00:10:12 Speaker 4: Yeah, and when you full hip hop fifteen year old JD at that time, yeah, not even thinking R and B would even be a. 00:10:18 Speaker 3: Path for you, nah uh never, which is crazy. 00:10:26 Speaker 4: What sparked that R and B part of your brain, because I could even see some of those Jamaican records as much as a lot of those breakbeat stuff in old dancehall stuff is hip hop. A lot of that melodic shit is really from R and B. 00:10:38 Speaker 2: It is. 00:10:39 Speaker 5: I mean, you know, it was crazy about the the R and B side. I don't. I didn't approach R and B like R and B. 00:10:49 Speaker 2: I approached it like I could write songs, so I'm like, you know, and I wrote, I write hooks, so I write the hooks for the some rap records. I'm like, if I write a hook, I could write, I could possibly write a song. But I never I never was doing it prior to trying to do it. So once Crisscross came out and they was so big, and Babyface told me that, you know, I wasn't ship if I couldn't do it again, I was like, well, all right, I gotta figure out how to do something else. So my mind started just going into like, Okay, I'm gonna try to make an R and B record, and I was. I was fearless at that time too. When you don't have a bunch of hits, you don't kid if you don't make none. By the way, if the first person I went in the studio, if they would have listened to me, I would have been responsible for sampling, damn this sampling records period, because that's that's all I wanted to do. I didn't have a mind to like make music. My mind was we're gonna take this and we're gonna rap over this, We're gonna put this part in, and we're gonna put this part in, like and. 00:12:05 Speaker 8: Who was this artist? 00:12:09 Speaker 3: And I want. 00:12:12 Speaker 2: I don't want to do that because I mean I don't want you know, But that that that them not understanding because it wasn't really like a It wasn't really like a thing that they was like, JD, you don't know what the fuck you're talking about. Or maybe it was because I was young, but at the same time, it was like it was unusual for probably a fifteen year old kid to be saying, like, yo, let's take these people's music and let's loop it and let me rap over it. And to them at that time in nineteen probably eighty nine, yeah, probably eighty nine, that sounded like stealing, you know what I mean, completely thievery. 00:13:01 Speaker 3: Right, so and no musical integrity. 00:13:03 Speaker 2: Yeah, not one bit, so so you know, I would go one place and I'm like, listen, I want you to loop this record up. By the way, I didn't even know what that meant. I ain't had no drum machine, so I'm not really even knowing. I'm just like, I want this to play the whole time. 00:13:18 Speaker 3: I like this part. 00:13:20 Speaker 2: Yeah, And the dude was like, it can't take their music, but I'm gonna make something that sound like it. And I'm like, all right, let me give you a chance to see if you're gonna make something to sound like make some I'm like, nah, that ain't it. That ain't it, that's not it, that's not what. That's not that's not the sound I want. And then I had Chad there and we both like, nah, we're supposed to sample this. 00:13:50 Speaker 5: Now we don't know. 00:13:51 Speaker 2: We don't know what we're talking about because I don't know what sampling is. Like I said, I never even had no I ain't have no equipment. So something happened in that process where and this was records that me and Chad was trying to make. We was trying to be artists, and in that process that didn't work. 00:14:10 Speaker 5: Me and Chad didn't work as artists. 00:14:14 Speaker 2: Records came out on an independent but dydn't do nothing. But I mean, at the same time I was doing exact same thing. Man him was rapping. 00:14:23 Speaker 5: I was writing. 00:14:23 Speaker 2: Hooks and I was writing, but I didn't have the production part yet and so I didn't like, I didn't really love the music. So these girls that I met on tour with Houdini when I was on the Fresh Veest, they was like, we wanted we group, and I'm like, y'all group. I'm like, well, y'all should. 00:14:51 Speaker 5: Let me produce you. I never produced. 00:14:56 Speaker 2: Straight said this, this is what I've said, and it was like what And I'm like, yea, you should let me produce you. We go back to Atlanta, you should let me produce you. Now I was thinking already back to Atlanta. I'm like, listen, they got a car. They they older, they can come pick me up, they could take me places I have nothing, Like, I'm just trying to stand. 00:15:18 Speaker 3: They got a car. 00:15:19 Speaker 2: Yeah, you're gonna come pick me up and get some food whatever whatever it is, right, So I'm seeing all of this, but we on tour. So yeah, So at sixteen, I had the I started making beats and I'm making beats, making beats, and I think I want to say the Soup Times Leather. 00:15:41 Speaker 5: Project had come out. It was doing okay. 00:15:44 Speaker 2: It wasn't like I said, it didn't do amazing, but it did enough to get like a little bit of notoriety for them. I got a little bit of money, and they got into Jet Magazine. And when they got in Jet Magazine, they had a full little picture in there. And that's what got the Chris's mom to notice me at at the mall, because if she wouldn't have saw that Jet magazine, she I probably wouldn't even hooked up with Chris and Chris because the DJ from Silk Times Leather was with me and she was like, I just saw you in Jet magazine. They weren't thinking about me, so they was thinking about her. They thought, okay, well this gotta be legit because I seen her in the magazine. That's the only thing that probably like that. Definitely that saved me and got me connected with Christ and Christ. But basically I was just walking through the mall, no Greenbrie. I went to greenbro mall to get get some sneakers, I think, and just a humbug and Chris and Chris was in the mall and like I said, I'm just looking at them, and I'm thinking, like, you guys must be like on Nickelodeon or something like, because I was like, I'm not. I'm super hip hop by the way, So I don't like Nickelodeon, I don't like nothing, and I don't like nothing that's remotely close to Disney any of that. Right, So but I keep looking at these kids, and the girls in the mall they watching them like, so I'm asking people, I'm like, who is this and people like, oh no, and they go to this. So I'm actually at this point following these kids around them all and they go to the Cookie Company they used to be like the Cookie. 00:17:24 Speaker 4: Company and thank god you was a kid too, and yeah. 00:17:31 Speaker 2: So I'm following these kids around and I'm a kid too, So don't you know, he's looking crazy? And they go to cookie counter and the girls just working at Cookie Company they freaking out. They screaming, They're giving them free cookies. 00:17:46 Speaker 8: All off the look. They're not famous, nothing, nothing, okay, And I'm like, yeah, I'm. 00:17:55 Speaker 2: Like, is this like this gotta be a joke or something like what's going on right now? They felt like I was in the Twilight Zone because I'm like, nobody else around me is paying no attention to this, right, Like the girl that's with me, Dola mixed from some times other she ain't saying like, yo, look at that. It seemed like nobody's paying no attention to this but me and this ship is happening. Like so I'm sitting them looking, I'm like, somebody got to tell me something. So first of all, I'm mad because I ain't got no free cookies. 00:18:25 Speaker 5: That's that's first. 00:18:27 Speaker 2: That's first, because I'm like, I'm not even really I'm not. It ain't hit me yet that they could be a group. I'm just I'm thinking they just somebody already. Not nothing about me being like I could write for these kids or nothing. I don't have that even in my brain. I'm trying to figure out how she and the magazine I'm with her, y'all giving them free cookies and we should be getting the fresh. That's what I'm trying to figure out. 00:18:56 Speaker 3: And I heard that's why you're a vegan to this day. 00:18:59 Speaker 2: Noah shouldn't be. So I go, I go over to them. Mom, I'm like, yo, what what do y'all do. And it's like what I said, what y'all do? And he's like, what you mean when we do? I'm like, what do y'all. 00:19:16 Speaker 3: To school? 00:19:17 Speaker 5: They're like, we just cool. I'm like, y'all just cool. 00:19:22 Speaker 2: And like yeah, I said, well, y'all don't rap and they said rap like rapping was whacked. By the way, this is the moment in time when I will never ever see in life because every little young motherfucker think you can wrap. This was a time period when kids didn't want to be rappers. 00:19:40 Speaker 4: I feel like adults. Hope talks about that all the time. Like he was like, I didn't. I was a secret that I was a rapper because rappers weren't really cool at that time. 00:19:47 Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, I guess right. So I said this to them. I'm saying, like, do y'all wrap? They said rap like we don't want that. And at that point that's when I was like, oh, ship, y'all don't even make music. So then I'm like, so why these girls giving y'all free ship? 00:20:10 Speaker 5: They're just cool and they that's what he said. He's like, which is cool. They love us, like they love y'all. 00:20:19 Speaker 8: What now you sound like I hated JD. 00:20:25 Speaker 4: On some stars, Like there's gotta be something like they just love that twelve years old telling you that. 00:20:32 Speaker 2: I'm like, but what's going on? So at that point, I'm like, Okay, these little bastard day That's how I'm feeling. Like this little dude talking to me like he's like he got all of But by the way, they was fresh. They had on new sneakers. They was in the mall getting sneakers and getting. 00:20:50 Speaker 3: Free ship close on the right way at that time, close on the right way. 00:20:53 Speaker 2: They was fly. They was fly kids. They had boxes. They ship was cut and I was just like. 00:21:01 Speaker 7: Back then that would appeal to the young girls that work in the mall, like oh they some cute little boys. 00:21:05 Speaker 5: N you really don't understand what I'm saying. 00:21:08 Speaker 2: It was like you you would have saw this ship, it would be bugging like you gotta show you. 00:21:14 Speaker 4: Got a cameras, just walk through them all, no one stopping, nobody, not one person. 00:21:21 Speaker 7: Okay, if you've seen two little boys and they don't do nothing, you've. 00:21:26 Speaker 2: Never seen them nowhere, and you would be like you seen me, and they'd be like screaming. I'm not saying like they was freaking out, and I'm like, what's going on? And then Chris was like, yeah, we come here every week, this this our hood, just where we're at. They know us, and I'm just like what m hm. And at that point I froze in my mind just start going. I'm like, Yo, if I find a song for these kids and these girls are acting like this already, They're gonna be the biggest shit in the world. I said this in the mall. I couldn't find a song, but I said in the mall, So then I you know, I'm like, well, y'all should give me y'all number, and they was like for what. That's when they was looking at me, like yore going what you want my number for? Right, I'm like, I want to make some records with y'all. Mind you, I don't have no records. I mean sometimes leathers whatever, but I never made no I never made a male rap record besides me, right, so I don't actually even know what I'm talking about when I'm telling them I've been making songs for girls, right, writing female lyrics, and they eleven and twelve, So I just still I don't even know that life no more? 00:22:53 Speaker 3: Right, I just want I just like cookie whatever, three cookies. 00:23:01 Speaker 2: I So I get the numbers and I'm like, we just start hanging out and they start, they start coming to my house and at first, you know, I couldn't figure out how I was gonna get them to rap. 00:23:17 Speaker 5: And then it hit me. 00:23:23 Speaker 2: One day we was in the car and we was playing I think it was playing ice Cube America's Most Wanted Album, and they knew all the lyrics. And then without me asking, I was playing, I was and they knew all lyrics and I was looking in the review and I could see them back then in the back seat like. 00:23:44 Speaker 5: Her pay back, some motherfucker making like I got. 00:23:48 Speaker 2: I'm like, they act like rappers. They know the lyrics. So that's why I'm starting. I'm talking to myself like, if I write a song. 00:24:00 Speaker 5: On that they like they delivered, they rap it like they're doing ice Cube. 00:24:08 Speaker 2: Ship might work. 00:24:11 Speaker 5: But I'm like, JD, you ain't ice Cube. 00:24:13 Speaker 3: Though at the same time his name, so. 00:24:19 Speaker 2: But you know, I'm saying that that's the part that I tried I left out. I'm like, wow, ice Cube. 00:24:24 Speaker 3: Very few people are to this. 00:24:26 Speaker 2: Day, you know what I mean. So, uh, I should have thought about that part, because that part did. It took a long time for them to get to like what I was writing. 00:24:39 Speaker 3: But that's why overthink. 00:24:41 Speaker 4: If you really overthought it and thought I'm not ice Cube would have got there. 00:24:44 Speaker 2: Well, I mean you had. I had to come up. I had to say that podcast. They were the first song. They was like mm hmm, what is this right? 00:24:54 Speaker 5: Literally, and it's. 00:25:00 Speaker 2: So a wild because I have so much stuff that's going on at the time that I'm telling y'all this story. This is I think in the same week that Chris and Chris come to my house and we start making records actually start and I start figuring out how I'm gonna do this. This guy named Ian Bert that's from Atlanta comes to my house and he says, y'all, I got this girl I want you to meet. She just came from out of town. She talented. I think she I think she is star. We need to do something with her. Now. 00:25:37 Speaker 5: Once again my house. 00:25:40 Speaker 2: It's just like I got equipment, but I ain't really got no outlet. I don't know why ian brought this girl to my house, but he did. And I mean, I guess, you know, whatever the universe brought him over there. 00:25:54 Speaker 5: The girl was left Eye. The Left Eye comes to my house. 00:25:58 Speaker 2: And she ends up she's from fresh from Philly, s nowhere to station. She ends up staying in my closet basically at my house. So basically all of this is going on in my bedroom. I got Chris and Chris my room. I got this girl in the closet, they left Eye, Me and Ian talking all this in my bedroom. My mother doors closed. My mom don't know what's going on. So when I meet Left Eye and I see what's going on with her, I start trying to like make everybody work. So I got this crazy idea. I'm like, I'm a sample Michael Jackson and Paul McCartney, and I'm gonna make the girl is mine and you and Chris gonna argue over left Eye. 00:26:51 Speaker 3: I could hear Left Eye cursing both of them right now. 00:26:54 Speaker 2: It was this is I tried it. It was. It's crazy because, like I said, the idea of samples and the way I was trying to do things, this was. This was. This was ten years ten years before Kanye, This was ten years before just Blaze. When I'm what I'm talking about, I'm literally saying this and I tried it. I was trying it. I just I didn't know it wasn't right, but I knew that's what I wanted to do. 00:27:29 Speaker 6: I was. 00:27:30 Speaker 2: I knew it was that was supposed to happen, right, and I had, you know, I sampled the Girl is Mine and I had it, but the song was just so like super cheesy song for a rap record. But the idea was there, but they ain't love the idea. Chris Chris was just like they did it, but it was just like whatever, right, And that was like the beginning of let's trying to get into it. 00:27:58 Speaker 5: And then. 00:28:01 Speaker 2: I wrote some more records for them, and I started realizing, like, okay, once again, back to the ice cube, things like I gotta make records that these kids actually. 00:28:14 Speaker 5: That feel like it's them. 00:28:17 Speaker 2: And I think that's where I started getting my writing chops really really together, because I start understanding that when you write music, you gotta write for the person. The person has to feel like it's them. And I woke up one morning I was like, okay, because like I said, I wasn't. I was. I was hip hop, super hip hop, no guy on, no music, I don't no keyboards, none of that I'm sampling. I'm just trying to sample. So I had turntables and I had and I kept thinking about ice Cube. I'm thinking about ice Cube. I'm saying like, Okay, I gotta make these kids a. 00:29:02 Speaker 5: Record like ice Cube. So then I took easy Boys in the Hood. And then. 00:29:15 Speaker 2: Ice Cube had this song on his album, well go little Boys and Girls they all love Me, Come sit on the Lap. He had that. 00:29:23 Speaker 5: So I took the Little Boys and then I. 00:29:27 Speaker 2: Put Boys in the Hood from Easy, and I was doing that on the turntables, So there was like little Boys in the Hood, Little Boys in the Hood, and I'm like, oh, wouldn't go over well on this is a song Little Boys in the Hood. 00:29:43 Speaker 5: And then I start thinking about what I can write about. 00:29:46 Speaker 2: So now I start asking them questions about what they see and what's going on. And I start thinking about the movie Boys in the Hood with the kids like you want to see a Dead Body, and how those those kids actually was the ones that were singing all the murder shit before everybody else, right, So I started thinking about how Little Boys in the Hood actually. 00:30:10 Speaker 5: Their vision of what's going on in the hood. You never actually hear that perspective, right. 00:30:15 Speaker 2: So I wrote that song that was a song, so I start going off that. I'm like, I'm going with this, and when they heard it, I seen their eyes light up. 00:30:26 Speaker 5: Like yeah, that's us. 00:30:28 Speaker 2: You said something, that's what we want to talk about. And I'm like, oh okay. So at that point I knew they was gonna rap it way better, and they did. They rapped the lyrics better than they did the other songs. They sounded like they really wanted to do this. They was acting like rappers and. 00:30:47 Speaker 6: That song. 00:30:47 Speaker 2: I thought that song was gonna be there smash little boys in the hood. So I finished that demo and I sent the demo out to rough House and they called back like, yeah, we want to signed them, and I was like, oh shit. 00:31:03 Speaker 4: And at this point, there isn't like the kid rapper hasn't existed yet at all. 00:31:07 Speaker 3: Yeah I mean me, yeah, well yeah that. 00:31:13 Speaker 2: Nobody, Me and Chad. 00:31:14 Speaker 5: But yeah, that's just that was the beginning that I think, like ninety. 00:31:18 Speaker 4: One, I just want to quickly interrupt because you're just saying left Eye was living in your career. 00:31:24 Speaker 3: It's just crazy. 00:31:25 Speaker 2: It was crazy. 00:31:26 Speaker 4: So where is left Eye at this point? Because of course, your focus is criss cross. But what is left Eye doing at this time? Who is Reco around at this time? Is t bos around at this time? 00:31:36 Speaker 2: What is nah so so left? I was still part left. I was really like pro pre social death, right because none of that. I mean, you know, my mixtapes was caused by the way I was DJing mixtapes. 00:31:51 Speaker 5: I would sell mixtapes in. 00:31:52 Speaker 2: School, but I wasn't like DJing clubs or whatever. But my mixtapes was called social death mixtapes. And you know, Left Eye, she was down. She was at the house. She was actually really like instrumental in helping me figure out the backwards jeans and getting the clothing right because we used to just try crazy shit all the time and be around each other. So really she was She was not a part of what was going on with Chris Graus, but she was just a support you know, part of the support team, and she just was around we was figuring out blah blah blah. 00:32:31 Speaker 6: Then he. 00:32:36 Speaker 2: Met another girl named Crystal, and he found Tea Bars. I don't know how he did this, and then he thought about putting these girls together and the first group TL she was called second Nature, and it was basically my group, and once he got T Buys, I did a demo on. 00:33:06 Speaker 5: I did a demo on them on T Bys and Left Eye basically at my house. 00:33:11 Speaker 2: And I'm trying to get their demo but also knowing that Chrisscruss thing is moving. 00:33:18 Speaker 5: Yeah, and I'm six seventeen at this point, right, and how old are they who Chris and Chris is eleven and twelve. 00:33:28 Speaker 3: And Ts and Leftot that's around. 00:33:31 Speaker 5: Rightly seventeen eighteen years old? 00:33:33 Speaker 2: Right? 00:33:33 Speaker 7: When jump drops and I told you last time, I would say, I said that to me, is probably low key the greatest disc record ever. 00:33:40 Speaker 6: It was. 00:33:40 Speaker 2: It's interesting because it was it was the Eminem type disc record, in which I don't believe people really look at Eminem records. 00:33:49 Speaker 5: It's diss records. Right when you talk about. 00:33:50 Speaker 2: Greatest disc songs, I never hear people talk about Eminem dissoning, sinking Britney Spears. Yeah right. I feel like that's what the Cris Cross thing was. Because ABC was looked at as an R and B group and they want rappers. 00:34:04 Speaker 5: It looked like, oh, you rapper boys is trying to just pick won't you all go a dozz effects? 00:34:13 Speaker 2: Wow? 00:34:14 Speaker 3: But where was that? Where did that come from? 00:34:15 Speaker 2: Though? 00:34:15 Speaker 4: Like? 00:34:15 Speaker 8: Why did? Why did? Why was those lyrics in that record? 00:34:19 Speaker 5: That's just that's what I felt like needed to happen. 00:34:22 Speaker 8: I just wanted to go ABC. 00:34:24 Speaker 5: Well. 00:34:24 Speaker 2: I just felt like I wanted to make sure that Chris and Chris was established as rappers and I didn't want them to come off like like I said, I felt like, especially me at this time, I was, you know, no shoe strings in my I was walking around here like super duper b boy like, so all I could think about was like, we're gonna dis somebody, somebody getting ready to get it right. I don't know, you know, that's what it was. 00:34:55 Speaker 5: I was, you know, and it was like it just felt like the thing to do. I don't know why. 00:35:00 Speaker 7: So they just caught it straight just because you just felt like somebody gotta get it. 00:35:02 Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, and you know, like I said, I felt like it was an era where these two artists was like young, so it was gonna be something that you really paid attention to. I just was trying to find a you know thing. It wasn't really like, it wasn't no real beef. 00:35:19 Speaker 3: It wasn't no real beef. 00:35:22 Speaker 5: It was just like a let's set this tone. 00:35:26 Speaker 2: Let's make sure that people know the difference between you and them, and the only the way to do that is to act like rappers, you know what I'm saying. And by the way, all I was listening to was God damn, I'm glad y'all set it up. It used to be That's all I was listening to, like every day. Like I think Jack and Foe Beast came out right before I made Jump. You know what I'm saying. I'm like Ice Cuban of Lynch My I'm like, oh my god, we gotta make some shit like this. So I probably me. 00:35:59 Speaker 5: I was just like this world, cue everybody. 00:36:03 Speaker 4: So then Jump, being the last record you wrote for Criss Cross, how do we transition into more of the j D as. 00:36:11 Speaker 3: An artist label owners so so deaf? How does that that transfer? You gotta take your take. 00:36:19 Speaker 8: Let's just usher, don't worry about it. 00:36:23 Speaker 2: Where are you at, I'm in the studio. 00:36:27 Speaker 6: Where are you at? 00:36:29 Speaker 2: I'm in the studio. 00:36:31 Speaker 6: I'm coming to you right now. 00:36:33 Speaker 2: I'm doing podcast Get a fourth mic and they can hear you. 00:36:37 Speaker 6: What podcasts? Next car might be I should saying something crazy. It's like everybody, Daniel, it's everybody. 00:40:02 Speaker 3: We feel like we're Daniel's father too. Now I know I could be the label owner, not just the producer. And I really want to sign acts like I'm not gonna let Ta Boys and left I get away anymore. 00:41:01 Speaker 3: I get I see the game successfully. 00:41:03 Speaker 2: No no, no, no no no. But I don't have came. 00:48:05 Speaker 10: We would have got to insert that because people might not believe it. They think it's about our times every time we talk. 00:48:09 Speaker 5: To me, man, what's wrong with this nigga? 00:48:11 Speaker 10: Man, I'm just saying we should insert the footage in the corner. 00:48:17 Speaker 5: They're gonna saying that we know and insert that. 00:48:19 Speaker 10: Your video is gonna be over your footage of me performing. Just let me do the interview. I'm smoking to you, tap with you downright. 00:48:30 Speaker 2: So listen. 00:48:30 Speaker 3: So I want your eleven year old recollection. 00:48:35 Speaker 2: So me and jay Z is performing. How old was you? 00:49:17 Speaker 3: I was born in ninety so what year was that? 00:49:19 Speaker 6: Man? 00:49:20 Speaker 5: He doesn't remember this. 00:49:21 Speaker 8: I remember that. I remember that. 00:49:23 Speaker 5: When was this ninety three? 00:49:26 Speaker 2: Three years old? 00:49:27 Speaker 3: I don't remember our sin when I was three like that. I watched reruns, but. 00:49:34 Speaker 8: I remember. 00:49:34 Speaker 2: I remember that. So Bow I was on our senio before I, you know, before we actually hooked up, and I you know, they was telling me about them they signed and blah blah blah. So I was like, you was sending to Atlanta, let's kick it. He came Atlanta that night, me and Jay, like I said, was performing. We started performing. And then Jay was like j D no, by the way, I think home started performing and bow I was sitting on the stage like this, let me perform, Let me perform. This is just telling me. He's eleven years old. I respect that, let me perform. And I'm like, let you perform. I know, you see my crowd, I got a whold, this ship is packed, and he like, let me perform. I'm like, I never even seen this guy performed, So I'm like, I don't know what's gonna fucking happen. I'm like, nah, let me perform. 00:50:23 Speaker 5: Let me perform. 00:50:24 Speaker 2: So then so then whole finish, and then I go back and I start talking to the crowd, and then some kind of way I don't know what made me say it, I'm like, yo. 00:50:34 Speaker 5: This little kid on the stage with me right now, he want a rap? 00:50:37 Speaker 2: And the crowds like, oh yeah. I'm like, I'm nervous as a motherfucker. I'm scared of his head, Like, what's what's going to happen? So then I gave a microphone and he told the dude, he said, put the beat on. Tell the DJ to put the beat on. I'm like, oh wait, he told the DJ with the dude, what's going on? So he's like really doing it. The DJ put the beat on. He started freestyling, the crowd going crazy. I don't know what he was saying. 00:51:08 Speaker 3: You remember the rap? 00:51:10 Speaker 5: No, I don't. 00:51:11 Speaker 2: He probably wasn't saying nothing, but I'm. 00:51:14 Speaker 10: Gonna let you going, no, I remember it like you just say no, I don't. 00:51:21 Speaker 5: But I remember that day like it was yesterday. 00:51:23 Speaker 10: I remember being at the Hide and Buckhead, which is is still there. When I was checking in the hotel, Hole was checking in too. I never told this story to nobody. Hope was checking into And what's crazy is how I knew it was jay Z. I know y'all had the record together, but the only memory I had of jay Z at that time because being on Death Row, I'm I'm West Coast out, but I was always like a hip hop baby, so I knew what the fuck was going on. When I saw Hole was checking in himself. This is when it tells me man sunshine baby. 00:51:56 Speaker 5: Yeah right, That's how I knew. 00:51:59 Speaker 10: I'm like, oh, this guy looks familiar. I'm like, oh, okay, I know that song. Jamaine kept me in the hotel the whole day. I was in the hotel with my mom. I'm like, Yo, where's hey he playing? 00:52:10 Speaker 5: I don't know. 00:52:10 Speaker 10: He pulls up in the Black Billy and I come downstairs. I remember asking the first question I have asked you that I never forget this. 00:52:17 Speaker 5: I said, what kind of car is this? Should like thick rabbit fur in the front. Never seen a car with just a B on it. So I'm like with the fund like this is crazy. When I want to his crib, I'm like, oh shit, this. 00:52:29 Speaker 10: Guy's fucking rich, like you know, he got every car in the back, got fucking dog's pool game room, Like this shit is crazy. 00:52:36 Speaker 5: And then that night was it a trial? What's the name of the club? 00:52:42 Speaker 10: Atri right, and everything is saying this fact like I wanted to go, I wanted to perform, I wanted to rap. I wanted to do my shit. It was me, you, jay Z and Bratt. If I'm not mistaken. Bratt was on the stage with us that night and I was like, Yo, I want to rap. I want to wrap fuck that, I want to rap, and you know, I. 00:53:00 Speaker 4: Mean we were joking around, but to have that confidence, what did that come from? 00:53:04 Speaker 5: At eleven? 00:53:05 Speaker 3: Because you got people that wouldn't have that type of confiden. 00:53:08 Speaker 5: Because I've been doing it. That was the whole thing. We get a cup, I. 00:53:11 Speaker 3: Can't ask on Jay yet car and it's the verbal Virgil rest in peace. 00:53:15 Speaker 10: Rug absolutely so for me it was like, yeah, man, what I'm sorry, Virgil rest I'm sorry, Virgil, but Virgil made it. You can't take credit for somebody who did the carpet. You bought the carpet on no matter fact he sent you the carpet. No, even car is a rug virgin when you when you when you're like a weed smoking with ash anywhere. Oh hell no, get him a couple of we'll talk to me while let's keep it wrong. 00:53:45 Speaker 5: Is gonna be the best. 00:53:46 Speaker 3: I want to keep this entire thing the way. 00:53:47 Speaker 5: You know, we're not add ain't nothing. 00:53:49 Speaker 2: This is beautiful. 00:53:50 Speaker 5: I love it. I'm not even getting in trouble. This is truful. 00:53:52 Speaker 8: This is beautiful. 00:53:53 Speaker 3: You feel like in trouble. We don't matter business. 00:53:58 Speaker 5: It's good. 00:53:59 Speaker 3: We know those type dudes. All right, so yeah, you're perform at eleven. Did you have by the way, which is a legendary No, that was that he was. 00:54:06 Speaker 10: Well, that happened. That wasn't supposed to happen. Okay, thanks, that wasn't supposed to happen. You know, I remember Shug like no, like tall sineo, No, you can't go out there, you know what I'm saying. And then my mom at the time was like, this is this is it? If it ain't gonna happen. And that's always tell people like, if you feel it, if you love this hip hop shit, if you really want to do it, you gotta go for I'm gonna fuck what type of time you own with time, and you gotta go. 00:54:35 Speaker 5: You know what I'm saying. That was my mom went to go. 00:54:37 Speaker 10: And you know, I look back at that like damn Like there's nobody from my from my age bracket from the time I came into the game, No job rule, no Nelly. Anybody who came out like in the two thousands and mid two thousands, they never. 00:54:51 Speaker 5: Did our seneo. 00:54:52 Speaker 10: No few artists that are still I'm talking ninety three, none of them niggas was rapping them. 00:54:59 Speaker 5: Niggas wasn't rapping. 00:55:00 Speaker 3: There's people that came out in ninety three that didn't do wasn't rapping. 00:55:03 Speaker 10: And if they was, I telling them, y'all niggas wanted rapping when I was rapping, or maybe y'all was, but not. I was like, that was the perfect time for me to go ahead and do my ship and I'm glad that my mom pushed me to do that. That was not as you can see if you wrote the if you rolle the footage back, it happened at the end of the show, but. 00:55:20 Speaker 5: The credits is rolling. 00:55:21 Speaker 10: I'm cursing, saying all type of shit that a six shrow shouldn't be saying. 00:55:25 Speaker 3: But where where does your you connect with death Row in ninety three? 00:55:29 Speaker 5: Even connect? It happened in my hometown, Columbus, Ohio. 00:55:31 Speaker 10: So what happened was the Chronic tour came and God rested you know rpd A. J. 00:55:38 Speaker 5: Johnson. 00:55:39 Speaker 10: Of course I know him as you know my nigga Friday. Yeah, you know what I'm saying, did this thing or whatever? But Eazel, but he was actually the MC of the whole entire Chronic tour. So when he got on stage, she was like, Yo, anybody want to come on staging? So my mom, of course, you know the kids, you go to cons of the kids always Donna get selected the kids, they cute, whatever picked me. 00:55:58 Speaker 5: I go on there, I. 00:55:58 Speaker 10: Start rapping, They throwing money off the stage. Dads comes grass me bring me backstage. And that's how the famous picture of me snoop at like nineteen. 00:56:09 Speaker 3: Put that right down here, absolutely right. 00:56:12 Speaker 5: So that happens. 00:56:17 Speaker 4: You know, you know, we've given his flowers like he pulled up just long, long time, he said. 00:56:25 Speaker 10: So that's how the legendary picture pop me Snoop and Dre Crazy. 00:56:30 Speaker 5: I would say like top. 00:56:33 Speaker 10: Not top five, not top ten, but like definitely top twenty pictures of hip hop picture. 00:56:36 Speaker 5: That's how I feel. 00:56:37 Speaker 10: That's a that's a that's a don't know, don't know nigga currently wrapping right now, making noise, making no type of money right now. I got a picture with Snoop at nineteen or eighteen, Dre at twenty one, Me is us three. 00:56:48 Speaker 5: That's what it was. 00:56:49 Speaker 10: And from there on it was Okay, we're gonna put him in the audience. They're gonna take him on tour. Every city we go to, we're gonna put We're gonna pick him. 00:56:56 Speaker 4: Well, Game Gamesac what game photo shopped himself with Tupac. 00:57:01 Speaker 3: When they was kids. 00:57:03 Speaker 5: What I tell you. 00:57:08 Speaker 2: The white boy just act like you're gonna hear with game kids. 00:57:13 Speaker 3: I was like, how did this happen? It was photoshops? 00:57:15 Speaker 8: So back to uh, back to uh the J Show. Yeah, when you performed, were you signed to know? At that point you store sign. 00:57:25 Speaker 10: No, but I knew it was it was official because when I got the call j D. I don't even know if you know this, but I was actually on the football field and my mom when I was when I was on the sidelines, my mom like ran down to the fence section were going to. 00:57:39 Speaker 5: Atlanta and like two days I'm like, for what with JAMAINI Prie? Who was that? 00:57:43 Speaker 10: That's why Jamais I don't even think knew who I was. I'm like, what Chris crossed it up? But as I was growing up, you know, I really wasn't a big Crisscross fan growing up because I always was like, man, I'm supposed to be with them niggas is like I'm on the biggest life. I'm supposed to But I was a kid did but that's how I was thinking, you know what I mean. So I looked at everybody back. 00:58:04 Speaker 6: Yeah bad. 00:58:05 Speaker 2: Really that's the thing like. 00:58:08 Speaker 6: Death. 00:58:09 Speaker 10: Like I'm like, I'm and I'm making music like at the time Corrupt was writing my ship. You know, I'm only like seven years old, so eight years old, you know what I mean. So in my mind, I'm like, I'm supposed to be where they at, Like why why am I just I don't get it, you know what I mean? But it everything fell in line once, you know, the snoop and the death ro thing kind of fell apart. 00:58:31 Speaker 5: I went back home and then I got the call from Steeve put On. I'm like, yo, we got a situation we should put. 00:58:37 Speaker 10: In with Jermaine the pre and then once I you know, did my homework, I'm like, damn all right. Then once you able to Biley, okay, showing me some new ship as a big home he supposed to do. Took me to the crib, first big house I ever saw. I'm like, fuck, JD had eleven cars. I'm like, the fuck like dogs, cars, the mansion, the the girls. 00:58:57 Speaker 5: I'm seeing them go in and out. I'm sorry to legs, I hate that word. This is fast. JD is cool. I'm like. 00:59:07 Speaker 2: This like it's cool. 00:59:08 Speaker 10: I'm like, yo, this is like the first like dude who I seen in my life that it's really cool. Like my pops wasn't around like that. So I'm like, yo, damn this niggas like he let any fun and he young like and he'd be doing ship, you know what i mean. First time I ever been on the yacht, j D took me first foot ball ever been to jad took me first piece of jewey ever rocked. 00:59:28 Speaker 5: That was real. Jad gave it to me. 00:59:29 Speaker 10: So it was like, that's what a that's a lottle home and that's what you want your big homie to do. And it was it was. It was all enough of that. So even though it was no ink sign, I knew where I wanted to be. He knew where I was going, and it was it was, it was nothing to think. 00:59:42 Speaker 4: About how we get from the jay Z stage to beare the dog? Where does that transition happen? 00:59:51 Speaker 6: Wow? 00:59:51 Speaker 5: It did? 00:59:52 Speaker 10: I about say, I said, still ship, I still said, it's a long time. 00:59:58 Speaker 5: It was. 00:59:58 Speaker 2: It was it was still a process. That's with him too, because like when I got bow out, it was ten years after Crisscross one. I mean, you know, totally ten years, a real ten year stretch. Now I was just looking at like, okay, well it's been ten years, so it's I could do this again. Now it's been long enough where people won't it won't look like that's my thing. Because I was. I kept fighting being the guy who knows how to put out young artists. I don't know why, but you. 01:00:35 Speaker 3: Know I get it. 01:00:36 Speaker 2: I was fighting it right and so I gave myself this stretch to be like, Okay, shit, I ain't did I ain't did. Nobody young in ten years, so can't nobody say you've been that's all you do? 01:00:49 Speaker 6: Right? 01:00:50 Speaker 5: So then I when I got to bow out. 01:00:51 Speaker 2: But bow Wow was different than Crisscross because Criscrouss weren't artists. He was already, like you said, he was rapping before he even came to me. He thought his name was kid Gangster like that was his rap name on death Row. So he was already rapping. He was already like around weed smoke, you know, death Row at at the time when he was there, it was it was deaf. It was death Row like you know what I mean. It was like the craziest probably company and shit around that he could be around as a kid. 01:01:21 Speaker 3: Crazy for an adult, yeah, it was. 01:01:24 Speaker 2: Crazy for adult. 01:01:25 Speaker 5: Yeah. 01:01:25 Speaker 2: But but so so I had to figure out how to get to a place that he'll like because he already was a artist. Christ and Chris I made into artists, right, but he was already a artist. So I had to, like, I had to figure out him. Yeh see what he was doing? Da da da, So he had to stay he stayed here and the land in my house and was just like around and around and around, and we put out we put out one song ros Huh on the Wild Wild West soundtrack with Will Smith, and that wasn't it, right, that won't the song. 01:02:06 Speaker 8: It wasn't it. 01:02:06 Speaker 2: But but it was just a test to see and I was just trying to like hurry up and get him out. And then it was like I'm like, nah, that ain't it. He not he not He not cool enough, Like he just seemed like a little rapper. 01:02:21 Speaker 5: Regret that. 01:02:22 Speaker 2: Now I'm like, it can't be, Like he can't be just like a little rapper. He gotta be, he gotta be. He gotta be like double flies. Chris was to everybody like when you said you was wearing your pants back, was like I was trying to figure out what was bow Wow gonna be? How was I gonna get bow Wow to have that same effect on young kids and young boys and whatever, young girls and all of that. So it's like I just kept trying to think of like the coolest ship, the coolest ship that he could possibly do, blah blah blah blah blah blah blah. And then uh, I got the soundtrack for Big Mama's House. And I'm like, I'm gonna figure it out with this. I'm gonna figure out a song for about while on the soundtrack, and we don't get this going. 01:03:12 Speaker 7: There used to be a real thing. Breaking artists on soundtracks. They used to be a real thing because it was a broken was the cheap. 01:03:18 Speaker 2: It was a cheats A movie especially had a big movie like Mark Lawrence. It was big like Big Mama's House. The budget was bigger than what you could get on the album budget for the artists, right, so you could get a big video. His first video, Dave Myers did his first video. You don't know no new artists who get Dave Myers. 01:03:35 Speaker 8: That's crazy. 01:03:35 Speaker 2: He's thirteen, He's twelve years old. He got Dave Mis's his first his first video, right. So so I'm like, you know, I'm thinking, I'm so the first time about when we did the first record, I wasn't thinking about. 01:03:55 Speaker 5: The collaboration between him and Snoop. I wasn't. I wasn't really like. 01:04:02 Speaker 2: Married to how important that was, right, And then it started clicking to me, like, you know, this guy is mentored by Snoop, produced by me on my label, like you gotta use all of this ship. This is, this is these are super powers, like these are not like this ain't shit that you could just like, oh yeah, Snoop found him and like you said, left eyes in the closet like you can't just like you know what I mean. And I was doing that At first. I wasn't even like putting that energy into it. And then one one day I thought about it and I was like, Yo, I'm gonna do a video with bow Wow and I'm gonna have a dog running down the street and he gonna turn into bow Wow. 01:04:51 Speaker 5: And I mean, I'm in. Bratt was here. 01:04:53 Speaker 2: It was being Brat was thin and she was like you crazy, and I'm like, nah, that shit gonna be stupid. And I'm like, Snoop did it. Snoop turned into the thing, and I'm like, we gotta do we gotta do about He's little bow Wow. His name is little bow Wow for its basically little Snoop. That's what his name is. Right. So once I started understanding, and that was the Okay, we got some meat right here, We gotta we got some meat right here. What how I gonna make him sound so that he can live up to that, that that level of you know, creativity. 01:05:28 Speaker 5: And then I'm like he always be acting like he. 01:05:34 Speaker 2: Could really rap, right, Brad like, yeah, that the motherfucker think he ship. I'm like, all right, well, Brad, write him a rap right. At this point, Brat was. 01:05:48 Speaker 3: Chicago. 01:05:49 Speaker 2: I'm like, I can't even do her raps right. I'm like, I'm like, you write, I'm writing rap. I write a song, right, bounce with me. First verse, I said, rap, you write the second verse. I want you to write that ship like you write it and write it crazy with cadence and all of this. 01:06:09 Speaker 5: So Brat did it verse. Now I'm thinking. 01:06:13 Speaker 8: It's too hard for him. 01:06:16 Speaker 2: I'm thinking, like we done went too far because he ain't gonna be a the door because this ain't how he rapped, right. So then we're doing it in here, actually in this room right here, or come in this room. And he didn't want he never wanted me to be in the studio when he writes, when he do his verses. So I left the room. I think I went to the strip club or something. I came back and he had did it. I heard Brat verse. I ain't even hear my verse. I heard the verse that that Bratt did when I came. 01:06:45 Speaker 3: Back, and I was like, m you still have that the reference? 01:06:53 Speaker 2: I mean now the references to him. Oh you're talking about the Brat reference reference. I don't know. I don't know it's probably, but I can. I was like, how y'all getting him to do that? And by the fact, it wasn't just it was just you, It was just you and Brian him. It was Brian now like he's saying is light, but he wasn't rapping like that, so I didn't think. I thought it was like this was gonna be difficult for him, and it wasn't. It was like super easy for him. And I'm like, wait a minute, Oh oh, he could really rap like like like he could really rap like this, ain't like some ship like And I wasn't here when he did it, so I don't even know how the fuck he came out right, So all I know is I heard the song and I'm like, okay, boom, I need to get somebody on the song. I called Toshing from Escape over here to sing the hook and we started finishing the Bounce of Me record, and at that point all I all I could start thinking about was the video I'm thinking about, Like, yo, when these people see this little dude rapping like this and he turned into a dog and we got a little singing hook on heire, we should be good, right. I'm just trying to you know what I mean. I'm trying to do what I'm doing. 01:08:15 Speaker 5: You know. I started paying attention to that. 01:08:17 Speaker 2: I started paying attention to how much social death meant to kids because of Bow Wow. I start seeing other young artists want to rap because of bow Wow. And I start saying, Okay, he's creating this a thing, and social. 01:08:35 Speaker 5: Death is the brand behind this thing. Right. So then that's when I start stop. 01:08:42 Speaker 2: I started not being scared to like be the guy that breaks young artists. I'm like, Okay, at this point, i know how to do this better than anybody, so I'm gonna just figure out how to do it again, but do it on a different scale. Right. So when the rap game came, that's what that was. The rap game basically did exactly that Bow Wow bow I was twelve. The rap game took it back down. They was there was a whole group of you young motherfuckers that slew right like now, like Mulatto, younger than bow Wow j I's younger than Bower. All of these kids, they're younger than him. So it's like the same thing. It's like you've seen that's what. That's what, That's what it just started. I saw that, and I'm like, oh, this is gonna be my thing. I'm gonna start go one, gonna take it back and figure out a way to do it again, and just keep sending it and selling it into a whole new audience. You know what I mean, even like this, like this whole Tray Young thing, like Trey Young is what twenty one will put you on. Try put Trey Young's twenty one he posted because you young, right, how old is he? 01:09:52 Speaker 5: Like twenty two? 01:09:53 Speaker 2: Okay, So it's people that that's that's fucking with Trey Young buying these snip You're seeing these hoodies, buying the hoodies and all that. They probably ain't even listen to Jermaine du Prix album, but now they see this, this is associated with that, and that's that's that's giving this whole brand a whole another that start over thing. And it's like, now, like I said, now that I know that that's what it is, that's what I use so just to answer your question in a long form, that's what bow I did. He brought. He brought that that structure to me. Once I realized what it was, I'm like, okay, I gotta use this because yeah, as a star, like he said, if you as a rapper to see kids fainting and running and chasing him, you can't duplicate that, Like that's not some ship. You're gonna be like, Okay, well I'm gonna go. We're gonna go find another one of these. Okay. 01:10:47 Speaker 4: I do kind of want to I kind of want to gas him up a little bit. What you what you feel you brought to so so death? Oh wow, I know, just take a simple question. 01:10:57 Speaker 5: You know. 01:10:58 Speaker 10: You know, after we got done with Millennium Tour, I'm like, JD, look, you know the ship I was talking when I came in here. I'm like, look here, man, you normal gas post. 01:11:09 Speaker 5: If nobody was gonna do it, I'm gonna do it. So I'm like, get off. 01:11:12 Speaker 10: I'm like JD. Look, I said, Nigga, I'm like kiss rolling stones right now. I told you, you know, I mean me and Drake we talk a lot here, like Nigga, listen, I don't know nobody else in the business other than the greats who can go on tour arenas and roll out of bed and go do some ship and do what y'all did. 01:11:27 Speaker 5: That shit is incredible. 01:11:28 Speaker 10: So it's like I tell him all the time, even when we're in our group chat and we talking ship to each other, I'm nigg you know, I'm the biggest artist you. 01:11:35 Speaker 5: Ever had, straight up, up and down movies. 01:11:39 Speaker 10: If that fails hosting the first rapper to host the grant you know, the rig, all that one O six hosting skills, rap and act and all that, I'm the bo Jackson the rap. 01:11:50 Speaker 8: Get your ship off. 01:11:55 Speaker 3: Off now you ain't not the bou Jackson rap. 01:11:58 Speaker 10: I mean I never really dipped into like sneakers and what he accomplished, you know what I'm saying, that's all him. But as far as like what l laid down while heep, you know, Hove could be Bo Jackson rap on a business standpoint from wrapping the business, absolutely, But when we're talking about entertainment, pure entertainment, I don't give it like I really feel like I'm that nigga, like acting, what's do it hosts or something? Pay me rapping, just prove that for two months straight, you know what I'm saying. So it's like I tell him all the time, no disrespect to nobody who will signed to the label before me. But it's like, you know, it's like the end of snoopid me when me and Dog talk, is when Drake come around, when JD around. 01:12:49 Speaker 5: It's just weird. It's just how it just funct ways that way. 01:12:53 Speaker 10: But I tell him all the time, and I'm like, Snooper tell Drad, I'm the biggest moment, no matter what, I'm the biggest, and that's what it is. 01:13:01 Speaker 8: Jad called me when y'all was on tour. He asked me a question. 01:13:03 Speaker 7: He said, Yo, why he said bad was selling out all these arenas and it's crazy. 01:13:09 Speaker 8: He was like, but none of these blogs is picking it up. They're not talking about it. They not. 01:13:15 Speaker 10: They wasn't at the time, probably not like how you wanted them to, but they did for when it mattered. 01:13:19 Speaker 2: You know what I'm saying, shave room, fuck with you. I'm not talking about the shaved room, talking about these rat gods, the blogs. The blogs. I mean, say academic right, academic DJ, academics. I'm talking to you here right now. I don't know I'm that serious. I'm saying he a young he's a young guy, right, because this is something that that's always really really weird to me about social death because I talk about we've been talking about the youth. 01:13:55 Speaker 5: You see how young I was when I started. 01:13:57 Speaker 2: You see how young he was. Everything here it has always been young. But you Barry Gordy Nook, Okay, but I'm saying you got all these you got young bloggers now that claim their. 01:14:16 Speaker 5: What is it reporting the young artists of the world? 01:14:20 Speaker 2: Right? 01:14:20 Speaker 3: Yeah? 01:14:21 Speaker 2: How do you not report the young guy that got all the young guys. 01:14:25 Speaker 4: Into because you have to look at the name of the toy I was doing that. I'm thirty one years old. I'm running to that tour that was my whole childhood. These people is literally who I grew up on, Like this is when I was trying to get pussy, was when they was making music. 01:14:42 Speaker 3: So that's where I've run to. And no matter how. 01:14:46 Speaker 4: Old those bloggers, wherever they are, their audience is younger. Now you're just trying to post some ship where you look old. Because hip hop, hip hop moves in two years of hip hop is fifteen years in any other genres. 01:14:59 Speaker 2: Listen, I would I I would agree with that. But that's not the truth, right. You know, Tom Brady win the Super Bowl this year, they're going to report that. 01:15:08 Speaker 3: Shit, Uh, because. 01:15:15 Speaker 5: That's different. 01:15:15 Speaker 4: No, no, no, ESPN will, ESPN will, but People's Magazine and Tom Brady. 01:15:23 Speaker 5: But do you know why? Because the nah but no. 01:15:28 Speaker 2: But but like you said, I'm trying to give your flowers. I'm just saying, like I get it. Wait, listen, listen, listen. All I'm saying is I don't understand how you overlook, like you just said, if you want to be both jacks, whatever you want to be, I don't understand how you overlook a guy that came out at twelve years old, so three million records in two thousand and one and in twenty twenty one. Okay, it's selling out arenas and nobody else that was on one O six and. 01:16:10 Speaker 5: Part when Bowo was number one on one O six and part is doing that is't even even out. No, that's that's that's facts. 01:16:17 Speaker 4: But I get justin lea boy a quick meme, real quick. You asking for flowers from the wrong soil. Know what I'm not asking I'm not, but I'm really I'm not. 01:16:25 Speaker 2: Really. 01:16:25 Speaker 3: I don't want anybody ever honored anyone. 01:16:27 Speaker 5: What I'm saying, I don't honor gossip. 01:16:29 Speaker 2: Yeah, but I'm saying I don't really want nobody to give him like, oh, bow you deserve this. He doesn't say, yeah he does. But that's not saying. That's not what I'm just saying. 01:16:36 Speaker 8: I'm just certain things that should be reported. 01:16:38 Speaker 5: By just hip hop. 01:16:39 Speaker 2: This is a hip hop thing, Like it's like, this is hip hop. This is you talking about it? Like I said, this is what I had to do. I was ignoring the fact that what the superpowers that bow come with before me? Bow I was signed to Doctor Dre and Snoop Dog at five years old. 01:17:02 Speaker 3: He's the Forrest Gump of hip hop. 01:17:04 Speaker 5: Yes, but I'm just saying to say hit everything. 01:17:08 Speaker 2: But to say that right, to say that and then look at it and be like it's twenty. 01:17:12 Speaker 8: Twenty one, right, it should be reported. 01:17:16 Speaker 2: Like you you ain't gotta you ain't gotta say, oh I fuck with Bowy. 01:17:20 Speaker 5: That niggas don't know what it is. 01:17:21 Speaker 2: All you gotta do is like, yo, do you you could do it for I can't believe he's do you realize that Bow selling out of yeah Bow? 01:17:29 Speaker 5: Why something Bow? 01:17:29 Speaker 2: I just set out a show in New Jersey tonight. You could do it dumb like that and make it look like you hating, but still like you ain't. 01:17:36 Speaker 5: You ain't getting them in flowers. 01:17:38 Speaker 2: It's just the fuck that. 01:17:39 Speaker 5: But you have to acknowledge to your argument though. 01:17:42 Speaker 10: We in the businesses where it's like that's done for me lately type of shit. Motherfuckers can only remember what they can remember. It's no country, no, I know. It's weird like that's when you mentioned Tom Brady Pastor Mahomes is supposed to be the Steph Curry of the NFL, the new the new motherfucker on the black, who's changing the landscape football in the quarterback it's supposed to play with when the o g step up and he gotta face the younger and then he beats it. And then you look up and see how many accolades Tom got and he's still winning it today, which we still are. It's different. Why the Tom Brady compareson to soul Off, It's like you got it. You gotta talk about who then win more rings in time? 01:18:23 Speaker 5: Nobody. It's like Steph just broke the record. Ain't nobody about to beat that ship times? 01:18:26 Speaker 3: But but right now, and he beat them right now, and he beat the right now. 01:18:32 Speaker 5: Nigga water kidd washed him, cleaned it. 01:18:37 Speaker 10: Oh no, gotta make it if you if you had a son and he got he did. 01:18:43 Speaker 3: But guess guess who sold more jerseys after he beat him? 01:18:45 Speaker 5: Who? 01:18:46 Speaker 3: Patrick Mahon. 01:18:49 Speaker 5: That's the world saying that's a flowers thing. I'm not talking about flowers. 01:18:54 Speaker 2: I don't want nobody get I don't I don't want nobody get confused. 01:18:57 Speaker 5: I'm not talking about the flowers. I'm just saying in hip hop in general, I. 01:19:00 Speaker 2: Just feel like I feel like I feel like this is one of the parts of hip hop that being from the South actually is the downfall or down sparrow about being from the South because the South. Things happen in the South like that that are not reported as just a hip hop moment and when and not, and it's not about, hey, give these guys a flowers. It's just just reported as a moment, like, guys, this is twenty twenty one. Jarru no fat Joe, no fabulous, No not Joe get his ship. 01:19:41 Speaker 3: Joe is doing great. 01:19:42 Speaker 2: I mean I'm asking I'm talking about the people that was on one O six and part. All I'm saying is just list of rappers that was on one O six in part when. 01:19:52 Speaker 5: Bow Wow was number one on one on sixth A part. 01:19:54 Speaker 2: You remember this, right. 01:19:55 Speaker 3: Of course, name one of them that's free, of course. 01:20:00 Speaker 2: The name one that's on tour that's selling out twenty thousand seed the ring. 01:20:05 Speaker 3: Okay. 01:20:06 Speaker 4: Can I ask you this though, if Fat Joe sold out Madison Square Garden today, do you think these outlets that you're asking for flowers from would completely disagree If Fat Joe completely disagreed. 01:20:17 Speaker 5: What I'm talking about. 01:20:18 Speaker 4: I'm not saying anything about that. 01:20:22 Speaker 6: Do that. 01:20:22 Speaker 8: It's not reported what they wouldn't come on the. 01:20:25 Speaker 3: Would say you know what they were saying. They were saying, you Drake sold out for a week, So y'all are put why are you using the word person? 01:20:32 Speaker 8: I don't think they would, nah. 01:20:33 Speaker 2: I definitely listen by the way, one New York outlet would post say something about this. One of these guys would Charlemagne, whether it be it's gonna. 01:20:44 Speaker 3: Be from the South. Charlemaine's from the South. 01:20:48 Speaker 2: Yeah, but he's not He's from New York. Now stop, don't do that. He is somebody would say, I'm saying, I don't I believe that. 01:20:56 Speaker 8: I don't think they would do. 01:20:57 Speaker 4: We have his argument with our friend Justice shout out to LVR and everybody. 01:21:02 Speaker 8: Justice. 01:21:02 Speaker 4: Still, I feel like has this Atlanta complex with New York ship, and we have such the opposite because I feel like y'all have dominated us my entire life, maybe not Maul's life, but my life. Y'all have had a musically. So I look at Justice and Justin and I are the same age, and I'm like, how you still have. 01:21:18 Speaker 3: This New York complex over ship musically. 01:21:21 Speaker 4: I'm looking at y'all like we need to get like you. 01:21:24 Speaker 2: But media media wise. 01:21:26 Speaker 4: But that changed with the Internet out, especially with COVID too. Still you don't need to go into fucking New York no more. 01:21:30 Speaker 2: It's still it's still no different. 01:21:34 Speaker 3: And this hurts me to say it's a New Yorker, Like, don't think. 01:21:36 Speaker 2: This is easy for me. What you're saying that you don't need to do that, you don't, but you still have to is in Miami. He's from Queens, But you don't have to go to time. You know it pains me to say you don't have to do nothing in New York. 01:21:50 Speaker 8: No morning, I wouldn't say nothing. 01:21:52 Speaker 5: He's in New Yorker. 01:21:53 Speaker 4: You need that, You need that audience. It is the audience you need from New York. Don't get it twisted. That's a I'm saying. As far as in the street, shit, you don't it's gonna be there New York so like and everyone in the industry. 01:22:04 Speaker 5: New York is still like the number one mark. 01:22:06 Speaker 3: You gotta tap it one hundred per shit. Don't move out of New York City. 01:22:09 Speaker 10: That's what I said, just because it's the city wise everything though, Like this is how I feel like. It's a different energy. I get like when JD said, Okay, we sold out every fucking arena across the nation, right with the Tampa that's twenty thousand. If it was crazy, JD was there, it was it was retarded from top to bottom. But when we went to New York. We go to New York, we prepare for that ship. We look like even as rappers, we look up when we go to New York. We know that shit feel like a Monday night football game. Mal you're from New York you're from Queens, you know how we feel like when we about to owe the garden. Oh my god, watch can't wait? Everything go down in the gardens, you know what I'm saying. So we we to this day, niggas, even young niggas, we look forward to going to New York like that's always gonna be like to me, the number one spot, even though the a's a home. Ohio's the city like we know. 01:23:01 Speaker 4: But audience wise, I agree, nothing in the world of York is fuck America. The world don't move without New York City. 01:23:07 Speaker 2: I'm saying. 01:23:08 Speaker 4: With this industry ship, with the blog ship and the people like that ship don't matter no more. 01:23:13 Speaker 7: And sometimes you don't want you flowers from certain people like I just I mean, I'm saying, I don't care if certain people are reporting my status of my accolades, like I don't don't. 01:23:22 Speaker 8: I don't do it for that. 01:23:22 Speaker 7: Yeah, But as long as my pears though, like the niggas that I'm in the game with that they look up and be like, yo, he did what last. 01:23:30 Speaker 2: I've been fighting this forever. It's just a thing. It's a thing because you just want because because like I said, you want to you just want people to know. I just want people to know. I don't care if, like I said, they can say whatever they want to say about the situation. I'm not asking you. 01:23:49 Speaker 5: To even give me a r Your. 01:23:53 Speaker 8: Not getting reviews, they're not saying nothing. 01:23:56 Speaker 2: They're not saying nothing and acting like it doesn't even exist. And that that is partially why. I'm sure this is a question that y'all want to allude to, but this is partially why I did what I did when I did what I did on that Puff thing that day when we got on there about this versus, because I felt like I felt like the people that were screaming what they scream about Puff, they've heard it, they've seen it, because New York spills it out right. I guarantee you it's fifty records that I did that the majority that people don't know about because I'm here in Atlanta, and what happens with Bow Wow Tour has happened with my records, and what has happened with these artists and has happened with these You've heard the records, but you don't know what they've done. And unless Jenny starts popping shit and talking and going crazy, you don't even be knowing, right, Like I seen somebody yesterday and he's like, Yo, I mean how much ice cream are you gonna post? Do you make me music anymore? And I'm like, damn you you know? Do do you realize that I graduated from the class of ninety two? And alright, Lennox record might be number one in the next two weeks? 01:25:14 Speaker 3: Phenomenal record blacks? 01:25:16 Speaker 2: What were we talking about? Like, I'm but I had to I have to say this, right, you see what I'm saying. 01:25:22 Speaker 5: I have to say. This is nobody gonna say. 01:25:24 Speaker 2: Yo. Do y'all realize that this nigga started in ninety two? Yeah, I'm not asking you to give my flowers. I'm not even had you to say, Yo, the records jamming and I get it. I want you to say, who never have been a nigga? Do with this? Loan for this? Hard for this? What Hull saying? That's me? 01:25:44 Speaker 3: Can I ask? Can I ask you a very white therapy? 01:25:47 Speaker 4: No? 01:25:47 Speaker 3: Can I have a very white therapy question? 01:25:49 Speaker 2: Yeah? 01:25:50 Speaker 4: Back to you deciding when you saw Chris Cross getting all them cookies for free in that mall and said, no, they got something. I want to write for them. I want to be behind them and make them the stars. You don't feel like you've done that your whole career and didn't do the puff route where even though I am helping make these records, I'm gonna make sure I'm next to them, not behind them. 01:26:11 Speaker 5: So I feel like when you. 01:26:13 Speaker 4: Made that decision, when you saw them getting the free cookies, has come to this point of what you upset about in saying people not knowing about your whole legacy. 01:26:20 Speaker 5: No no, because you didn't have to yell it no, but I just did it. But that's what I'm saying. 01:26:23 Speaker 2: I'm not upset. 01:26:24 Speaker 3: This is the things the wrong word. 01:26:26 Speaker 8: I'm sorry. 01:26:27 Speaker 2: I'm not upset. What I feel like. I feel like this. I feel like we talked. We talk about things in this industry and in this sphere, and we have questions about things. And if you don't mention what I'm saying, you won't get the answers to why. All right, So say, for instance, R and B music right, R and B music today will never sound like R and B music sounded. 01:26:58 Speaker 5: Like you guys might like it or somebody else might like it. 01:27:01 Speaker 2: Yeah, because it's nobody from nineteen ninety two in the top ten chart, in the top ten on the charts in twenty one. Right, that's a conversation. I ain't got nothing to do it, Jamay getting no flowers. This is a conversation that you gotta be like. Guys, listen, you do realize the existence of R and B that we love. Whoever, maybe you don't if you don't like it. But that new audition Bobby Brown, I'll be sure Era, none of them producers are nowhere to be found, right, And that's what I'm saying. This is I'm saying, is we gotta start talking about this because people keep arguing about music like why R and B music ain't this good? And this is why. It's not because the artists ain't good. It's because the new artists they're not being trained by nobody. Because the people that train me ain't. You know my story. I said, I've ran into Babyface. Who's these people running into. 01:28:05 Speaker 4: But that's where producer tags and producers like Puff depending on how you view him as a producer them getting in front of shit. That's important because that keeps the legacy going. It makes the regular consumer, not the nerd like me that are looking the fucking album credits and know who did the New Edition shit. You have to be that producer that steps up and say, hey, I made. 01:28:24 Speaker 3: This fucking record. 01:28:26 Speaker 4: That's gonna keep you relevant because the younger artist is gonna be like, wait that shit. 01:28:29 Speaker 3: I grew up on JD did that shit? 01:28:32 Speaker 4: So you still one in New Addition stepped up and said, hey, I produced the New Addition shit. 01:28:36 Speaker 5: Yeah, but it didn't happen. But that's what I'm saying. 01:28:38 Speaker 3: You still just try to producer tags annoy the fuck out of me. But I get it. 01:28:41 Speaker 2: I totally get it. But I'm saying you still speaking about producer. I'm just speaking about the genre in itself, the genre in itself. 01:28:50 Speaker 3: What's the genre now? 01:28:51 Speaker 2: With R Kelly being gone, He's fifty percent of the R and B of R and B music that that was there, right, So then you had Me, you gonna have Puff, you have Dark Child, you have. 01:29:05 Speaker 3: Don't start naming because the we're gonna leave someone out. It's gonna get it. 01:29:08 Speaker 5: Well, you know, I I'm just saying. People know, I'm not saying what we know. 01:29:12 Speaker 2: But what I'm saying is all of these people was covering these this period of time. Right when you look at the charts now, you don't see any of them names, right. And that's what I posted the other day when I said, I'm saying like I wasn't dissing nobody, and I wasn't trying to throw no shots at nobody. I'm saying, God damn, I'm looking at the ship saying I came out in ninety two and I'm the only person. 01:29:39 Speaker 8: Right, I get it. 01:29:40 Speaker 2: But that's wow. 01:29:41 Speaker 4: Okay, But that's why versus important, and the conversation you have with puff is the next conversation we need to have. 01:29:46 Speaker 2: About versus gotta happen because because. 01:29:50 Speaker 3: I said this on the podcast prior to before we even sat. 01:29:53 Speaker 5: Down, drink that ship. 01:29:57 Speaker 4: I'm good, I'm cool, I'm good, good, I said, if we want to go through these verses conversations with producers, because that's what started that. 01:30:08 Speaker 7: Spicy was that because that ship felt a little spicy, like it was real. 01:30:12 Speaker 3: I'm gonna get to the ship like it was some ship being said, and I saw it. 01:30:16 Speaker 4: When it kind of got the three of us in the room, who can come out with a record without help the same. 01:30:22 Speaker 7: Way, the same way you were just talking, like wait, do you know like I saw something of that with the get your ship off right now, Like I saw pop sayings like what you gonna do? 01:30:31 Speaker 6: Play? 01:30:32 Speaker 7: A bunch of kid records played that, and I saw That's when you was like, wait, hold up, do you know? 01:30:36 Speaker 6: Like uh? 01:30:38 Speaker 8: And then you go and played the record and he was like. 01:30:41 Speaker 2: I wrote that. I say, you didn't write that. 01:30:43 Speaker 5: You didn't write you didn't write ship? 01:30:46 Speaker 2: How much of that was like real? 01:30:48 Speaker 5: That j D talking ship? 01:30:49 Speaker 7: And on top of that, because I know Dre's name was being thrown around in that a lot. Doctor Dre's name has been thrown around love did you and Drake squash that ship? Yeah, y'all talk y'all cool? 01:30:58 Speaker 1: I remember, but you know, interesting drinks, get to the puff ship? Interesting thing about he just say get. 01:31:09 Speaker 5: To the puff ship? Just I know it was just. 01:31:17 Speaker 2: Two hours ago. 01:31:18 Speaker 5: Don't you hold Why don't you put this in there? 01:31:20 Speaker 2: What put drink? Nor did we come from his drink? 01:31:26 Speaker 5: I wanted say they talking ship? You know why? Because he never, like j is so exactly And that's. 01:31:30 Speaker 2: What I'm saying a little bit. 01:31:35 Speaker 5: It's coming listen talking, listen, listen. 01:31:39 Speaker 2: That's what made me and Dre have a beef anyway, what you're saying, that's what I said in the x x L a while ago, and there was a Scratch magazine. I think I said that. I said, yo, if you can, if you put me, But it was it was about me, Timbling and Dre at the time. 01:31:56 Speaker 8: Timble is another one of those producers and Drayden. 01:31:58 Speaker 2: Drayden like the comment, and I you know, and then so Dre and and then Timberland was rocking with Dre at the time, so then both of them teamed up on me and basically did a diss record. But yeah, that conversation that we was having, it was very interesting to me because I'm like, you know, one, I fucked with puff and and versus never would make me not fuck with Puff Puff Puff Daddy's my man. 01:32:26 Speaker 5: He's Puff Dad, and. 01:32:29 Speaker 2: What he did and what he does and in this business is amazing and how he does it is amazing. But but when it comes to getting in this box and sitting in this motherfucking writing a song from scratch to finish, finding an artist, putting the artists on the song, and then finishing it and giving it to y'all as a product, I don't know. I don't know six people that y'all that people even mentioned today that do that. 01:33:02 Speaker 3: What do you what do you think? 01:33:04 Speaker 2: I don't know six of them all? Right now? 01:33:07 Speaker 4: What can I can I ask a question? 01:33:10 Speaker 3: I know you want to answer? 01:33:11 Speaker 5: How you talk right now? I like to. 01:33:16 Speaker 4: What you think Dre Lack, what you think, Swiz lack, what you think, Tim lack, what you think Puff Black? Where they can't everybody? 01:33:25 Speaker 6: I want. 01:33:27 Speaker 2: A question. 01:33:29 Speaker 5: I'm not I'm not. 01:33:30 Speaker 2: I'm not saying that. I'm not saying a la It's not a lack. It's just a thing that they don't. I don't think they cared about doing these things. By the way, I told you at the beginning of this, I might not have wanted to be a writer, but I ain't have no choice. 01:33:43 Speaker 3: Yeah, I think Dre had a choice circumstances. 01:33:47 Speaker 2: You know, you had Snoop Dogg around. You got Snoop Dogg, d O c around you like I got a rightful I'm not going you know what I mean? Puff was from a different way. That way he did it. I don't know that he cared the right he had Davante a Ryan you got you know what I mean? You got you got all these you got, I'll be sure you got all these people you got, you got all these different things that you can pull from. I just feel like I don't know if they I don't know if they lack it. 01:34:15 Speaker 5: I just feel like. 01:34:16 Speaker 2: They have They was in a position that didn't call for them to do that. You understand I'm saying with like, same thing with Timbland Tembling had Missie, what you're gonna do? You try to outrite her? I got, I got something for you. Let me hear what you got, right, you know what I mean? I didn't have that. I didn't have that. That that that luxury to have somebody just sitting in the room, that's amazing and be like you may here you go, here go a song. I'm sitting in the room by myself and I'm like, ship, Okay, I'm gonna do this. Ship. 01:34:55 Speaker 3: I gotta make sure. 01:34:56 Speaker 2: I'm thinking I hear something, you know what I'm saying. But so but that that I felt like, I feel like when we start the way versus is now right and it's a performance and it's people on stage and people doing what they gotta do. 01:35:11 Speaker 5: You know who made it that way though? Right? 01:35:12 Speaker 2: Yeah? I actually started that with him and Soldier Boy with the with the actually really performed. 01:35:19 Speaker 3: When behind him in the video. No no, no for that. 01:35:23 Speaker 5: Was that was like the you know what I'm saying the way. 01:35:30 Speaker 10: Because the ship that motherfuckers don't know is when Jermaine was like, man, it's an official y'all really, my nigga, we about to really do it. Yeah, So Jermaine was like, yok, you ain't gonna be able to perform like that got energy, that ain't. 01:35:43 Speaker 5: Gonna I'm like, Jadi, listen, I ain't gonna sign up for this. 01:35:45 Speaker 10: Motherfucker. I can't perform. I gotta perform. That's my specialty. I got to show the world. Remind him what we just talked about. Right, Niggas can get quickly in this day in the age. Right, So I'm like, look, I'm not even gonna do it. If I can't do it, how I do it? Soon we did it. Niggas really had no choice. And I think after that, that's what I told Tim at puff House when we face times you. 01:36:07 Speaker 5: When I was at puff. 01:36:07 Speaker 2: House, by the way, cut you off. 01:36:10 Speaker 10: I said, Tim, I changed the landscape, but this versushit. Niggas gotta perform there any rapper that come. 01:36:14 Speaker 2: Out first, Lenna, give you a flowers. They got it. 01:36:16 Speaker 5: They gotta fucking perform. 01:36:18 Speaker 2: That's another That's another one I want to talk about. I don't be like like Jad, you just bitter. I'm not bitter. Listen, but I will say this, you're not going on popping ship ship. 01:36:28 Speaker 5: I ain't even been drinking. I'm just popping ship I'm chilling. 01:36:32 Speaker 2: And Soldier Boy still have had one numbers than the last four verses that came out. 01:36:38 Speaker 5: And I don't care how many artists they just had performed. 01:36:42 Speaker 2: These niggas had six hundred and fifty thousand people in their. 01:36:46 Speaker 4: Room, I mean Sodier Boy, and they come from the Internet era. They were the first two artists. 01:36:52 Speaker 2: That's what I'm saying. Why mention it? You had three six Mafia and the whole hip hop commute unity and they ain't bust four hundred thousand? 01:37:02 Speaker 4: Can I put it this way? We know how fickle the Internet is, right? The Internet is the most fick a place on earth. 01:37:07 Speaker 3: If bow Wow and Soldier Boy or the godfathers of it, what do you think is gonna happen? 01:37:13 Speaker 5: I get it. 01:37:14 Speaker 4: I just saying they're not gonna be because the Internet moves so quick, they're gonna forget. They're gonna forget their forefathers until it's tomb mention. 01:37:23 Speaker 2: Say, it ain't like I said. It ain't even like you're not giving nobody no flowers. This is real numbers. It ain't like I'm saying, like, hey guys, look we out here selling records. No, I know that's going. 01:37:36 Speaker 3: On, right, I'm saying the Internet is so fucking fickle. 01:37:39 Speaker 4: Of course they'll forget their godfathers and not try to fucking promote them and give them their actual flowers. 01:37:44 Speaker 5: I just know I believe. 01:37:46 Speaker 3: Let me ask you more for that. 01:37:47 Speaker 5: Let me ask you this. 01:37:48 Speaker 2: You think I was from New York, he'll have more publicity about what he does, as far as. 01:37:54 Speaker 5: It'll be the same, uh bigger than Yeah. 01:37:59 Speaker 4: But I'm saying to thinking hours from New York, I don't think you would have approached his career the same way. And I don't think it would have been the same way. 01:38:04 Speaker 3: So I don't even know if. 01:38:05 Speaker 2: You get to this point here, but you're looking at I'm talking about, you know what I'm talking about. I'm saying, I just feel I just feel like we I feel like it's a piece missing to Southern hip hop, right. And I feel like when accolades come in Southern hip hop, it's not looked at on the same level as others, as those that come from New York and LA. By the way, I feel like it's I feel like it's definitely looked at on a difference. 01:38:34 Speaker 8: I feel like a. 01:38:34 Speaker 7: Boo was different though, because he came in so young, right, and the content now is so violent and you know, drug use and shit like that, and it'll be hard for us to accept bow Wow net because it's. 01:38:47 Speaker 8: Like, Nigga, we watched you grow up. 01:38:48 Speaker 7: You can't start talking like crazy like these new artists as coming up out of the streets because we watched you from twelve thirteen, fourteen, movie star hostings all of these things, like you've been out of here, you've been in another superstar forever. 01:39:02 Speaker 8: So now it's like. 01:39:02 Speaker 7: The content and what these younger kids want is more grimy, it's more street, it's more violent, like they want that. But you know that ain't true though, as far as what most of it ain't true. Oh no, what they're saying, No, we know that. But I'm just saying from about they're not going to read except. 01:39:18 Speaker 3: Yeah, I think we're in the era of kids telling the truth. 01:39:22 Speaker 5: And there it is. He just gave me to the points. 01:39:25 Speaker 3: I think the kid the kid rapper has changed. 01:39:27 Speaker 5: It has It's like, no, I have these. 01:39:31 Speaker 3: Kids from Chicago are fourteen and they're talking. They're really doing. 01:39:33 Speaker 5: I have to bring this up right, but you know it's more real than just killing it all that type of that's true, but you know I have to bring this up right? What Okay, go there? 01:39:43 Speaker 2: You know how to bring this up? 01:39:44 Speaker 5: Go there? That's true. 01:39:46 Speaker 2: I mean, go there. 01:39:48 Speaker 3: It sounds like me and my posit. Thanks getting. 01:39:52 Speaker 2: No, I'm just saying, you know, I had a little TV show called The Rap Game, right. 01:39:59 Speaker 5: The fir. This person who won was miss Mulatto. 01:40:01 Speaker 2: I remember. 01:40:03 Speaker 3: Shout Mulatto or a lotto. 01:40:06 Speaker 2: Now that's three different people you just name, right? You do realize that? 01:40:13 Speaker 8: No, how was it three different people? 01:40:18 Speaker 5: I mean, you ain't catch what I just said. 01:40:21 Speaker 3: Triple on Tandra. 01:40:23 Speaker 5: It could be a double on Tangra, but. 01:40:25 Speaker 2: No, it's three different people. If you watched on my show, okay, she wasn't the girl that you see now, okay, okay, all right. 01:40:32 Speaker 3: Right, I thought you John telling me like. 01:40:34 Speaker 5: She went from Miss Mulatto to. 01:40:39 Speaker 2: Big Little Lotto to Big Lotto right now, she's whatever whatever. 01:40:45 Speaker 3: But cancel culture did that to some degree. 01:40:48 Speaker 2: Okay, But I'm just saying, when you watch it, do you you know nobody speaks on what they've seen. They watched this people, you watched this girl be what she says she is now that you know you didn't see her. 01:41:06 Speaker 8: That's what you're saying. 01:41:07 Speaker 5: You've seen this, you watched it. 01:41:10 Speaker 2: So I don't know that when you say that about if ba I was doing it, I don't know why, but that's not what I would Yeah, I wouldn't even suggest him to do that dumb anyway. But I'm saying, I'm watching people watch people do this and don't care. 01:41:26 Speaker 4: But you feel a lot of I don't feel like she talk about some wild shit that we wouldn't believe she would have done after that show. 01:41:34 Speaker 3: Did she say some shit? Then maybe I missed it in a degree of like what come. 01:41:38 Speaker 2: On after the show. But I'm saying you basically watched her grow up on that TV show. That's what I'm saying, Like you do realize like the first season when she won I brought her back on the second season to rock with the second one? Yeah, so therefore did you hear her talking the way she was talking at that time? I'm not writing the raps, know what I'm saying. This is a second this is a new year. By the way, the third year, I brought her back again, and we have all three. 01:42:06 Speaker 5: You know what I'm saying, start having all three winners. Did you hear a rap like that? 01:42:12 Speaker 6: Then? 01:42:13 Speaker 2: No? 01:42:13 Speaker 5: Right, there's nothing wrong with it. 01:42:15 Speaker 2: What I'm saying is the audience is watching this and allowing you to do whatever the fuck you're Okay, you know you see what I'm saying. 01:42:23 Speaker 3: They don't, you know, I mean her defense. I've been in studio with I've watched her right rap. 01:42:32 Speaker 2: From the jump she. 01:42:35 Speaker 5: I said she was the winner, like rap, But you're not always blame that. I don't understand. In this time of age though, it's just on it. 01:42:41 Speaker 10: It's different eras like with basketball, like JD like right now it's niggas that I feel like Steth Curik better than Jordan mm hmm. 01:42:48 Speaker 5: Just a plumb of what they see. You know what I'm saying. 01:42:50 Speaker 8: They don't know what they're talking about. 01:42:51 Speaker 3: But but they like the three pointer more than they love the Actually, it's. 01:42:55 Speaker 5: Like it's changing the new wave of the game, you know what I mean. 01:42:57 Speaker 10: And it's like, but I mean when the I feel like if one thing can can end that though. 01:43:03 Speaker 2: That's the thing about basketball. That's why don't even understand that whole conversation. But it's true, No, it's not. Because it's like, if you listen. 01:43:11 Speaker 10: My dog right now on SHOT's Christmas list was down there, I want some air jorwdan ones. She got all the motherfuckers, but she want more. If I say that, what do Michael Jordan do? What she's gonna say shoes? Mm hm, you know what I'm saying. So it's like it's still the substance in DNA of what have you done for me lately? 01:43:30 Speaker 5: That's how the whole game is. That's what this whole time. Yeah, but we're. 01:43:34 Speaker 2: Not talking about We're not talking about that. You're going let's go man for man at the end of the day. If the finals come and as good as Steph Curry is. 01:43:47 Speaker 5: It's Katie in the picture. 01:43:48 Speaker 2: He don't win the championship. Ain't no need for you to even have the conversation about him being better than Jordan's because we don't seen Jordan be putting that same hot box and he wins. 01:43:58 Speaker 8: For the record, nobody's better than Michael Jordan. That's just. 01:44:01 Speaker 3: But we've also seen one. We've seen Braun lose and still calling. 01:44:05 Speaker 2: The goat's error. 01:44:07 Speaker 3: We've seen bronis right now. 01:44:11 Speaker 4: We've seen Braun lose a couple of times, and he's still a goat to a lot of That's it. 01:44:15 Speaker 2: You know why tell me? You know went to three different teams. He took them to the championship. I don't know about it, Michael j Just a matter of fact, I'm saying that in itself to me, makes Lebron James a goat. He is the goats because he took three different teams to the championship and nay one. I don't know nobody that did that. Michael Jordan left the Bulls. It was over with right, came back three, Peter, you know what I mean. Like what I'm saying when he left the Bulls and went to Washington, I'm just saying, you know what I mean, that was fun though, that was fun. I'm just saying, still, you gotta give Lebron that for that right. I just feel like it's always about It's always a thing like when you when you say that who's better than who? It's one thing that already can always say like yeah, but have you done this right? It's the same thing like with Hope. Right, I was watching I was watching uh because I'm just getting ready to say something. I was watching. I was watching the Hall of Fame and even for me, a person that's been around hole before, Hope was what people know Hope is now to hear them say this, Leapers got more nominations Grammy nominations than any artist ever. Why do rappers keep saying they with him? 01:45:52 Speaker 6: Right? 01:45:54 Speaker 5: This is what I'm saying, Like what. 01:45:57 Speaker 2: You can feel that up? 01:46:00 Speaker 10: But sometimes ain't gonna be okay. 01:46:05 Speaker 3: A lot of times. 01:46:09 Speaker 2: But I'm saying, okay, now we like to get back to the conversation anyway. That that I just feel like. 01:46:17 Speaker 8: Says the puff is the puff versus happening. 01:46:19 Speaker 2: I don't think so. 01:46:20 Speaker 8: Why not? 01:46:21 Speaker 2: Because I feel like it's it's it's it's it's a performance based thing now and the majority of Puff records, who's gonna perform? 01:46:32 Speaker 8: I mean, you can bring people out on stage. That's part of the performance is. 01:46:35 Speaker 2: One of the greatest lot former You can't nobody do big verses. And I don't know that Mace would come out with him no more, right, so, so I don't know that. 01:46:43 Speaker 5: I don't think it would happen based on that. 01:46:45 Speaker 8: Yeah, I would love to see that though. 01:46:48 Speaker 2: All my people were rocking, you know, that's you know what I mean, And and we're coming with a whole lot of energy. 01:46:56 Speaker 7: So that was something that was something on that on that I G Live thing with you and Puff that I kind of noticed. I was like, I think that people just really don't know the extent of JD's like producing the songwriting, Like we know obviously the big hits or some people know the big big hits, but even in things Puff was saying. 01:47:15 Speaker 8: I was like, Puff ain't given JD enough credit right now. 01:47:18 Speaker 2: But also Puff also Puff was and not Puff and anybody else that thinks about this battle, they actually try to downplay the bow Wow era, right, Yeah, when we get into the two thousand ones, two thousand and twos, two thousand and three era of soci death, I don't know that bad Boy was even in existence sure personally, Yeah. 01:47:45 Speaker 3: I mean, I know what you mean. 01:47:46 Speaker 2: I don't know. 01:47:49 Speaker 3: I mean I never seen a bad boy, but it wasn't of course, I never seen a bad. 01:47:52 Speaker 5: Boy record number one on one on six part. 01:47:55 Speaker 3: At that time. 01:47:56 Speaker 4: No, but that's not fair because I mean they had their era and as a lot of labels do they move on and have to know, you. 01:48:01 Speaker 2: Can't say that's not fair. We're talking about going against me. It's not fair against other people. You're talking about meat up. Get you what you can do about me to say that, you know what I thought. 01:48:12 Speaker 5: It was gonna be like me, it's going viral. I'm just smoking what I'm saying. 01:48:22 Speaker 2: You said right now here right, I'm saying this right now for anybody that's challenging me. Right, you gotta challenge me. We're gonna go through. We're gonna start when we start, right. Just say we started in the ninety We started in ninety four, okay, right, and me and Puff went head up ninety four, ninety five, ninety six, ninety seven, ninety nine, two thousand, two thousand and one. 01:48:48 Speaker 5: That's what ship starts getting dark at. 01:48:51 Speaker 2: Okay, that's what it's gonna start getting dark. 01:48:53 Speaker 8: But someone argue that Puff has enough from the nineties. 01:48:59 Speaker 3: To kind of to make it. 01:49:00 Speaker 7: A fight, to make that look like you gotta look at y'all going twenty, gonna be me, y'all going twenty, y'all going twenty. 01:49:06 Speaker 2: I'm just I'm saying. All I'm saying is all I'm saying is the Bow Wow era. 01:49:12 Speaker 8: You can't discredit that. 01:49:13 Speaker 2: I know what you mean is a is an era. 01:49:15 Speaker 4: And that Dirty Money album is fine twisted. That Dirty Money album is fined. Don't get it twisted. 01:49:20 Speaker 5: But I told you, But look, I told you. 01:49:23 Speaker 3: Iry to have for me. 01:49:27 Speaker 5: Who I mean? Max might be like, like we talked about two thousands, changed his his. 01:49:39 Speaker 2: Went, y'all ship this ship. I am hip hop. When it comes to band hip hop, you go back all and I go, now, who won? 01:49:50 Speaker 6: Bro? 01:49:51 Speaker 2: That's what it is. Especially if I go new ship. That's Big Bow our first album, his first album in two thousand one sold three million. That's not That's before we get to him in Sierra, before we get to him in O Marion, before we get to him and Chris Brown, before the real hits that niggas really be talking about. 01:50:12 Speaker 3: They got a whole COVID stream. 01:50:16 Speaker 2: I can't, I can't talk. I can't That's what I'm saying. 01:50:22 Speaker 5: So I'm saying this is what I'm saying. 01:50:24 Speaker 2: All I'm saying is that that that's a part of it that I feel like, like I said, majority of people they you know, even when I look at people when they talk about me and they say something about JERMAINI Free, they say legendary producer in the nineties. Do you know when bo came out? 01:50:40 Speaker 8: People? 01:50:41 Speaker 2: Do you know when Confessions came out? Do you know when Emancipation of Me and Me came out? It wasn't in the nineties. 01:50:48 Speaker 3: Right, not even close? 01:50:51 Speaker 6: This. 01:50:52 Speaker 5: I love this. 01:50:53 Speaker 2: I wanted to talk this was this a legends. 01:50:58 Speaker 5: Two thousand and one, three, five, six, seven. 01:51:02 Speaker 2: Emancipation of meeting came out in two thousand and seven, right, people be forgetting about that whole little patch of records. I'm telling you, I don't give fucked. But nobody saying pump that ain't got nothing for two thousand and seven, not on bad Boy, No no. 01:51:23 Speaker 8: Way, Listen, man, I need I want to see. 01:51:26 Speaker 3: That pinion somebody. 01:51:31 Speaker 8: I ain't gonna lie. I would, I would, I would. 01:51:34 Speaker 7: This is why we need diverses, though, because I feel like, once you have that people start hearing these records now and it comes back to them like, oh shit, And like I said, people don't even know half of those ship that shit you just said a lot of people forgot about that. 01:51:47 Speaker 8: They don't even they're not even thinking about that. 01:51:49 Speaker 7: Puff is more popular, you know, he has probably the records that people gravitate two more in the club when it comes on. So that's what they thinking when they think versus when it could drop. I'm like, oh yeah, but you talking about records that people just completely forgot about. And I understand why you, Like, Yo, why how did you just forget about that two thousand and seven? 01:52:09 Speaker 3: Like you said that versus a promoter first j D is a musician. 01:52:13 Speaker 10: First run about verses? And I told j like that ship different. We have seen the biggest niggas who might have more number ones. 01:52:23 Speaker 2: And that's what I think. 01:52:24 Speaker 5: I get up and I see it. I ain't gonna say, but I see it. 01:52:28 Speaker 6: You know what I think? 01:52:29 Speaker 5: And I think Puff said that that day. 01:52:31 Speaker 2: He was like, JA, what you gonna do. 01:52:32 Speaker 5: If you're gonna play them Marian records? 01:52:35 Speaker 3: And I'm like, I'll say names. 01:52:36 Speaker 4: When we watched Nellie and Luton, who could ever say Nelly that era. No one could compare Nelly's era of that time. Ever, I walked into that saying, damn, Luta might get washed and then what happened. It's different when you really match up those records and. 01:52:50 Speaker 5: Cultual moments different. 01:52:51 Speaker 3: I felt it, yeah, but it's way different. But it hit different in verses. 01:52:55 Speaker 5: But that's what I'm saying. That's what I'm saying. 01:52:57 Speaker 2: That's what tell you that ship hit infer. 01:53:00 Speaker 10: I'm agreeing with you like this, that's right, Okay, Nah, it's up. 01:53:08 Speaker 8: So that was you got, You picked the setlist yourself. 01:53:10 Speaker 2: Nobody help me. 01:53:11 Speaker 10: We put that ship to me and my DJ. DJ just put that ship together in motion. JD know, say, jad is what we're doing. He's like, okay, you ain't done that in that's gonna okay, this is how are we about to? 01:53:23 Speaker 5: Okay and we're gonna walk away with the dub and this mm hm. 01:53:26 Speaker 4: Say no more quick quickly before we get to what pussed you off on the phone, because I do want to get to that. I do want to ask because because of what you're saying, I don't think a lot of people know that you produced the R A record that's out now that is about to be number one. You be division, you be with you really be with the new generation. What you think about the whisper singers of R and B right now? And how do you pick who you work with and who's worthy to come into this studio? Because R and B, I think is in a very good place, but it's changed drastically when it comes to vocals. 01:54:02 Speaker 2: Well, I just like I said, I just really realized why R and B has changed, and it's because nobody's going in the studio. Mary J. Blige got a new single produced by DJ Caller. 01:54:14 Speaker 8: I hate it. 01:54:15 Speaker 2: I don't like it. See, we got to be like the thumbnails and ship like listen. 01:54:26 Speaker 5: So my point is too much sense, listen. 01:54:28 Speaker 2: My point is this point. My point is this, when not when, what's the last number one R and B? Wrecking that call? It made. 01:54:41 Speaker 5: R and B exactly. 01:54:43 Speaker 4: I guess the bryceon Teller and Rihanna one would be popped to me, that wouldn't be R and B. 01:54:46 Speaker 2: Okay, So this is my point. That's what I'm saying. You got a legendary artist like Mary J. Blize going in the studio with people that don't make the music. 01:54:56 Speaker 3: Is this was exactly what we were talking about, exactly. 01:55:00 Speaker 2: This is what I was saying, This is what's happening in R and B. Right, So take say, for instance, Chloe Right, I don't I mean, is the Chloy record a hip hop record or R and B song to you? 01:55:12 Speaker 4: It sounds like a hard drive record that a label said, I think this will work with the algorithms. 01:55:18 Speaker 8: It's hip hop. 01:55:21 Speaker 3: I'm telling you what. 01:55:23 Speaker 2: You use her. She's an R and B artist. They want the murdered beats like this. You're not. You're not gonna get Yeah cords from Babyface, chords from Jimmy Jeames, Terry Lewis, cords from dark Child, No warmth, it's from even Pharrell. You're not gonna get none of that ship that you probably like from R and B from these guys that think people are going to get. 01:55:48 Speaker 7: But you know why that is though, because now people are more concerned with just putting the names that Mary J. 01:55:54 Speaker 8: Blige produced by Calid. 01:55:55 Speaker 7: It's the name, It's not so much the art and what makes sense no more because if you see. 01:56:00 Speaker 8: Calent and Mary J. 01:56:00 Speaker 7: Blige, you're gonna click on it, just because those are names that you click on but then now if you see an amazing R and B producer that you don't know, but it makes more sense sonically and it's a smash, people might not run to click it because they don't recognize that name. 01:56:14 Speaker 2: Yeah, but I understand that. But I'm saying, it's just like this when I used to when I be in my office, I used to love having Lil John and Bowow and all the artists come up to the office and just be in the office and playing music and talking ship. You see, I fanst y'all said what y'all said about that call it Mary. 01:56:33 Speaker 4: J because we talked about it already, or exactly what he just said. I said, Mary's needs better people around her. Manager needs to know that this is out of touch. 01:56:41 Speaker 3: You're just trying to find the name music. 01:56:45 Speaker 10: One thing I can relate to also Mary on what the number one show stars right now? 01:56:50 Speaker 8: Mm hmmm. 01:56:51 Speaker 5: Acting, Yeah, just killing shit exactly. So sometimes you know. 01:56:54 Speaker 10: You just the fact that you've been an actress too. 01:56:59 Speaker 5: You know what I'm saying. I can feel that I know how that shit feel. 01:57:01 Speaker 7: But the music suffers then because now you're out of touch. But and now you're just going. 01:57:05 Speaker 5: With such a legend and the other genre of what you do. I can always come back to that. 01:57:10 Speaker 4: But that's why fifty fifty decided. 01:57:14 Speaker 2: But you know that's aur though. 01:57:16 Speaker 8: You know they say that's a courage. 01:57:16 Speaker 7: Once you go too far into the acting and all that, as a musician, it's hard to come back. 01:57:21 Speaker 10: I just did it for two months. I just I just said them, Are I just did it? 01:57:25 Speaker 3: Mm hmm, And yeah. 01:57:27 Speaker 4: I don't know if that's just because after, like Mike, you had at least two or three big hits. 01:57:31 Speaker 3: I feel like after like my four. 01:57:33 Speaker 2: Facts, they ain't doing no movies after like Mike though, what. 01:57:38 Speaker 3: What wasn't him a salon trying to go to Cedric Entertainers or something? 01:57:42 Speaker 2: What what movie was saying? After you did? 01:57:45 Speaker 5: I like, I'm talking about not right after like Mike though. 01:57:48 Speaker 2: I mean, but like like Mike, after that, but come on, I'm talking about I'm just I'm saying not he didn't do no movies right after like Mike. He didn't go Will. 01:57:58 Speaker 3: Smith exactly even should have we war. 01:58:00 Speaker 2: Fifty million at the box office. He should have did Will Smith. I was telling him Will Smith. 01:58:06 Speaker 10: You know, but we still won because with the with the movie came that like Mike soundtrack, what you had on your label, that's how the whole that's why to this day and this shit is crazy. I'm bringing this up even though it's Curtis blow song. Bigas think that it's mice whole basketball basketball, Like the whole world thinks that belongs to me, Like that's my song, Like like it's the crazy shit in the world. So you're right, like we after we did the movie, it went back to the soundtrack. From the soundtrack became the single from that came Taking Home with for Real and it was and it was Hardball y'all tried. 01:58:40 Speaker 4: I like the I'd like to try to do with the littles on the Hardball soundtrack. 01:58:44 Speaker 3: Who do you think? Who do y'allt wane. 01:58:46 Speaker 2: On that record? 01:58:47 Speaker 5: I feel like we was all like. 01:58:48 Speaker 3: No one even gonna know the record we're talking about. 01:58:50 Speaker 5: Yeah, but they gonna look it up though, Remember it's a hit. 01:58:56 Speaker 3: We don't know they're gonna know what it's a hit after that? 01:58:58 Speaker 5: Wait, wait they you know it was number one on one of those parts. 01:59:03 Speaker 4: But there was kids. You have to remind kids you have too. Oh ship, that was a ship I grew up on kids. 01:59:08 Speaker 2: Yes, your age. I know they know that song. They wanted him to perform that song because Sammy on that tool. 01:59:15 Speaker 4: They don't even know Lozane was in a Doctor Doolittle like they're gonna ship oh wait, I went back to Doctor see Exactlysane was in BMF. 01:59:24 Speaker 2: I'm talking about. 01:59:27 Speaker 8: It's just it's not even. 01:59:32 Speaker 10: You know, like Willi's relevance though, Like because speaking of a nigga like a little ze right, somebody who I feel it is on one of the like most and JA you might look crazy, but like for my era, like the most iconic, like R and B record, like he has a memorable verse on the one to a record, like his verse is very memorable. Like we talk about relevance, what we speaking on because as we just said, his name is like he is in the biggest, if not one of the. 01:59:59 Speaker 5: Big it's like urban shows us out right now. 02:00:02 Speaker 10: So it's like when we speak on relevance, like what is what is really the definition of relevance? 02:00:08 Speaker 5: Is it current? 02:00:09 Speaker 2: Shit? Is it? 02:00:10 Speaker 5: Like? Like what are we basing that word of one? 02:00:12 Speaker 8: Because I hear that, Yeah, you would have to be current if it's relevant. 02:00:16 Speaker 4: I think I think it's in the eye of the beholder, to be quite honest, which what what's really relevant to you? Back to the platforms that matter and the people that matter? Am I relevant to the shit that matters to me? Am I being talked about in the places I want to be talked about? And I have the money I have? Do I have the accolades I have? 02:00:32 Speaker 3: Yeah, it's not. 02:00:34 Speaker 4: Relevancy is in the eye of the beholder at this point because the Internet, that shit has spread everything across the world. Agree that it's every little pocket. There's no more little niche sit, no more. It's even smaller than niche. So it's in how you feel smaller niche, and like, do you want to be relevant right now? Because look what is relevant? And I'm not even talking about music at this point. We could put this to the entire world. We could do this with the presidency race, Like do we want to be relevant? Because relevancy is bullshit? It's a bunch of nonsense. 02:01:04 Speaker 7: Don't I don't know if I care so much about relevancy. I'd rather just when people get it and they go back to it like he's. 02:01:10 Speaker 8: Been putting out hot shit. 02:01:11 Speaker 5: Okay, like a. 02:01:12 Speaker 7: Lot of motherfuckers go fast and they hit the top and it's like oh shit, yeah, but then they fizz out and it's over it. Like I'd rather be like a JD consistent years of Nigga's been hit for thirty thirty years. Y'all may not be talking about it. I may not be relevant in certain conversations and roundtables because you're just not talking about it for whatever reason. But if somebody throws my name on the table and I'm like damn, and then you start rolling through the files and you're looking like, oh, he's been putting out shit since two thousand and one, that's been Yeah. 02:01:41 Speaker 2: See, I don't I don't even get caught up in that. I'm never even worried about that relevance. 02:01:46 Speaker 8: Yeah, but you know that's what I'm saying. 02:01:47 Speaker 5: You don't even I don't even know what that means, right. 02:01:49 Speaker 2: I feel like the one thing that people like I said I'm a numbers guy. What people don't understand about me is I play the numbers, and the numbers that I play is that every mogul that people compare me to, I'm younger than them. So in every dance that we be talking about, even like the way we when you're talking about academics page and dah da da dah, and his audience is younger. I don't think people be understanding that I'm younger than Puff. I'm younger than jay Z, I'm younger than Kevin Lyles, I'm younger than Russell. I'm younger. I'm younger than all of these dudes. I'm younger than Teddy Riley. I'm younger than all of these guys. I might not be young by much, but I'm younger than them, right, So therefore my audience is younger than them. And then I got younger artists that is younger than any artist that they got, which makes my audience even younger than their. Right, So for me, I feel like the relevance part thing don't even work for me. 02:02:47 Speaker 5: Because people know me for Bawour. 02:02:50 Speaker 2: People know me for Anthony Hamilton, people know me for the Rap Game, people know me for Escape, people know me for the Brat, people know me for Criss Krust. That it is that ships all over the place, right, you can't I can't possibly be like, Okay, well I expect you if you listen to Escape, you you listen about Wow, Like no, no, there's no way. 02:03:13 Speaker 4: Matter fact, that's the point, right, that's the point off I break the labels. 02:03:19 Speaker 2: You know what I'm just saying. 02:03:20 Speaker 3: Escape you you could love it like you just can't. 02:03:24 Speaker 2: It's no way possible for you to be for you to even have that conversation about me at a time, you know what I mean, because when you're talking about this person, I might be over here just in this space, right, you know what I mean. Like, And that's the one thing, like when we talk about the R and B, you saying, how am I going into it now? Like I said, I continue to keep starting at one. I live by like the clock because I think people don't understand that, Like niggas think that they get to ten, they gonna go to twenty. You go to twenty, you started back at you just you know, you get get to ten, you start back over. It starts at eleven, one and two, it starts over again. And if you can figure out how to start over and keep going back to ten and start back over and keep going back to ten, that's a gift to me or even a trick that it's hard to figure it out. 02:04:25 Speaker 3: Can you explain that a little bit more? 02:04:26 Speaker 4: I know what you're saying, but I think you need to explain that a little bit more, because that was probably one of the bigger jewels you just drought this entire Yeah. 02:04:33 Speaker 2: I mean I don't know how much how much it was used to be something. I fear it because it was like, you know, most people that get successful, they get way up here, right, and most people play the game safe once they get at the top ye where they like, I'm up here. Every move I make has to be something that keeps me up here, as opposed to me going back down here and grabbing somebody that ain't nobody. Right, I go up here and I leave that up there, and I go back down here and I grab something that's nobody's talking about exactly right. 02:05:12 Speaker 5: So and I and I realized that. 02:05:17 Speaker 2: It's really just a fear thing, Like if you're scared of it, you shouldn't do it. But if you don't have no fear of how going back down here even bothers this? Right? Me working with Arin Lennox has nothing to do about bow. I was bow, Wow, he's here, he's up here. 02:05:37 Speaker 5: What you say? 02:05:39 Speaker 3: That's who everybody relaxed, that's my friend. 02:05:42 Speaker 2: Oh god, nobody can say something just getting crazy. 02:05:53 Speaker 11: Artists and this ship went down. 02:06:03 Speaker 2: We all love. My point is, like I said, I figured that out, and I and I figured it out because I did it first. That's the first thing I did with Chris Cross, Chris Crust, so all these records and I went and got escaped, and nobody expected that to happen. Nobody wanted me to do that. People at Columbia thought I was crazy, like Jaman, what are you doing? 02:06:27 Speaker 5: You got the rappers, you want to. 02:06:29 Speaker 2: Come with more rap music, and I'm like, no, I want an R and B group. When it got the R and B group got them going boom, they going go find up female rapper at a time when female rappers is not selling records, and just you have no you just could not possibly work right. You go do Brat boom, Jagged Edge. You just keep you just keep starting at one. And I don't feel like if you start at ten with an artist, that's where all the all the all the hopes and dreams is let out of the air balloon, you know, because like if if I would have had, you know, win a game bow Wow his own space and tried to put bow Wow on a Jagged Edge record or some shit like that to break him, I wouldn't have never really seen his audience, you know what I mean. I feel like that's another thing. Like I've tried to make sure all the artists get their own audience, they get their own people, they get this. This is what's going on, right, And you know, like when we speak about the art record, when did the art record? I told her, I was like, Yo, well I found a sample. I'm like, listen, you know the girls on Instagram. I seen you say this too. All y'all be saying, y'all getting a mirror, y'all be like this that pressure, right? I said, watch every girl gonna do this, we make this song. And she's like, you think, so that's. 02:08:07 Speaker 3: A good impression. 02:08:09 Speaker 2: And I'm like, yes, listen, and so I know people be seeing me post all these videos of these girls, and it's like that shit is amazing to me because these girls, this is not nobody asking, This is not a promotion player nobody. These girls. Every morning I wake up, it's ten thousand girls posting that song. Yeah, you know what I'm saying, Like that shit is wild to me. And once again, I still feel like that's another I feel like she's another one that's in that space. That's not you know, they're not really talking about it. This is you know, this is this, this is a just a real record. 02:08:50 Speaker 4: But that's that's numbers verse what we see on the internet with the bullshit, because that's doing numbers. 02:08:55 Speaker 3: It's just not on the bullshit. 02:08:57 Speaker 2: Yeah, but I mean, I mean, I'm not even talking about the numbers. I'm just saying just about the fact that like when we talk about like when we talk about R and B music, that's a pure R and B record, ain't you know what I mean, ain't no rap shit in And she ain't trying to rap. She's singing, there's a pure R and B record. She's singing, it's a pure R and B record that everybody loves it. All black girls are like going crazy over the song, like it's a black girl anthem. And I just feel like that's the that as long as I can make because I'm just asking you a question. The long way, as long as I can make records like that and continue to keep making records like that, those are the type of artists I'm gonna reach for. It don't matter, Like you know what Laraty was before I did that song. None of that mattered to me, you know what I mean. Where certain producers, they won't work with you unless you uh you know bow wow, like you know what I mean, I don't care about where artist is. You know, when I did a mancipation of me me, people told me I saved Mariah's life. I don't even really that because I didn't know what she was doing prior. 02:10:04 Speaker 3: I mean, Christmas saved your life. 02:10:05 Speaker 2: I mean Christmas saved everybody. Christmas. 02:10:10 Speaker 5: There, I'm on that record. Christmas. 02:10:13 Speaker 2: Oh god, anyway, Christmas, I'm on the record. 02:10:18 Speaker 5: Yeah you know, it's the biggest record. Oh my god. 02:10:22 Speaker 2: Yeah. So so I mean that's what it is, you know. So like even with division, like it's crazy. When I first started working with Damn, half of my friends didn't even know who the fuck he was. It's like, who is this who were working with? And then it's like okay, oh I heard it? Oh private for a while, all right, yeah, oh all right, yeah I heard this song. Okay, cool, And. 02:10:48 Speaker 5: My mindset is, oh, this is a new. 02:10:55 Speaker 2: Canvas. It's a new canvas for me to go back to one again. 02:11:00 Speaker 3: When they sing too like, you know what I. 02:11:02 Speaker 2: Mean, So I'm like, if I make this one ring. 02:11:05 Speaker 3: He's a piece of ship, but he can solve. 02:11:11 Speaker 2: As a human. 02:11:11 Speaker 3: He's a real piece of. 02:11:15 Speaker 6: God. 02:11:15 Speaker 3: I'm joking. 02:11:17 Speaker 2: So I'm I'm looking at that saying, you know, I'm gonna go back to one. I'm gonna do that, go back to one boom and get that to ten. And that's just my that's my that's my game. 02:11:26 Speaker 7: I think it's still I think it's still crazy. And I think I might have told you this when we went to Magic City. The fact that you still go to the DJ booth with the record of the artist that you're working with and give it to the DJ to play it, after all of your accolades and success and the legendary icon that you are. To me, that's still the craziest flex ever that you still do that, take the record to the DJ and like you play this. 02:11:49 Speaker 8: Dudes at your level, your stead, they're not doing that. 02:11:52 Speaker 2: But you know why I do it. You want to know why I do it? 02:11:55 Speaker 6: Why? 02:11:56 Speaker 2: Because I feel like it's a gift and the curse. Because I have these fucking paralyzed records, right I have records that have paralyzed DJs that when I go to the club it's a certain five records that they just automatically play Welcome to Atlanta, Money and anything like you by Bow Wow. 02:12:20 Speaker 5: Pays for sure. 02:12:22 Speaker 2: Yeah, they might play two Usher records right now. These are paralyzed to me. These are the records that paralyze you and make you like that make me seem like I'm stuck in that era. Right, So when I go to the club, I don't want to hear Welcome to Atlanta. Not in twenty twenty one. 02:12:38 Speaker 6: Right. 02:12:38 Speaker 5: We was in the club other night. I was in honest other in the daytime, and. 02:12:41 Speaker 2: They ship and the nigga's playing Welcome Towards and I'm like, it ain't even It's just me. 02:12:47 Speaker 5: And him in here. 02:12:50 Speaker 2: We're in Atlanta. 02:12:51 Speaker 4: You don't need to work out Atlanta. 02:12:54 Speaker 5: Yo. 02:12:55 Speaker 2: Wait a minute. 02:12:55 Speaker 5: I went to the DJO. Cut that off. 02:12:58 Speaker 2: I say, Yo, my nigga, listen, if you don't play that pressure right now, I need to hear pressure right because moving the strip, yeah, please. 02:13:07 Speaker 5: There's some pressure come on about. I was like, man, every girl. 02:13:10 Speaker 10: In here that I did say that, I'm so tired of this ship. I'm like, yo, every time I click on I g pressure. At least like the girl, I love definitely doing some type of ships press strip club. 02:13:22 Speaker 5: I'm like you look at the bar tender, look yeah, pouring shots up. 02:13:26 Speaker 3: She's singing what more did the Magic City? 02:13:28 Speaker 8: I was chilling, like what was he doing? What was his? 02:13:32 Speaker 5: How that go without me? You? 02:13:36 Speaker 6: You did? 02:13:37 Speaker 2: And we're gonna get to what pictures you just. 02:13:38 Speaker 5: Don't now We're about to up this ship. 02:13:41 Speaker 3: We did the history. 02:13:42 Speaker 5: No, no, you was. 02:13:45 Speaker 6: You was there that night? 02:13:45 Speaker 8: You was there? 02:13:46 Speaker 6: But yeah, you was there? 02:13:48 Speaker 8: Yeah? 02:13:50 Speaker 3: How you asked that they was there? 02:13:53 Speaker 8: Your tension was everywhere. 02:13:54 Speaker 7: Every five minutes, you had somebody tapping you, the girl tapping you know. He was all over h ain't no a llegenedd he letting his ship fly. 02:14:01 Speaker 10: What I might be the only nigga like in the history in not just city to like go downstairs in the dressing room all the girls be at and like through like maybe like. 02:14:12 Speaker 5: Fifteen thousand, like get your ship also and they can vounce for that. 02:14:17 Speaker 8: Mm hmm. No, listen, we clear on the show to go downstairs. 02:14:22 Speaker 5: They when they crow their hair. 02:14:24 Speaker 3: Round, I can make I can teach you how to make a race for. 02:14:27 Speaker 10: All that where they get ready to look good for niggas like us to like to walk in that type of Yeah, you nigga to ever go downstairs and do what I did, No. 02:14:36 Speaker 8: Cat Jad, you ain't do that. Don't look at them like that. J never do that. You ain't do that. 02:14:40 Speaker 2: Once you there do, I gotta teach them how to. 02:14:43 Speaker 7: Make you gotta go down there, you gotta you gotta go down there and throw twenty if he threw fifteen, because I 02:14:51 Speaker 5: Might hear you do that, and I'm gonna do thirty, No worry, no,
