00:00:00 Speaker 1: You are listening to the Dan Patrick Show on Fox Sports Radio. 00:00:04 Speaker 2: It's the final hour on this Thursday. Gang's all here, ready to go. Spent a lot of time talking about the basketball last night. Got basketball coming up tonight, including the Lakers fifteen and a half point underdogs, And I think that's what surprises me. Now they may be accurate with this point spread, but that's the big separation between these two without Luca and Austin Reeves playing like he did in mid season form. But ok see and ok see at home, I don't know if they're going to be a double digit favorite when this series goes to Los Angeles. Probably not, Probably be maybe in this seven and a half point range there, But ok see tonight, and you're coming off a game when SGA didn't score twenty had seven turnovers. I wouldn't count on that not too many times in this series. So basketball last night, the Knicks back and forth with the Sixers. Sixers just ran out of gas twelve points in the fourth quarter. Spurs roll the Timberwolves. They win it one, thirty three to ninety five. So Cavs, Pistons, Lakers, Thunder coming up tonight. NCAA Tournament expansion is close for basketball, and now you have the Coaches Association saying they won a twenty fourteen playoff for college football. 00:01:28 Speaker 3: I thought we were going to get to sixteen. 00:01:30 Speaker 2: We're gonna we were gonna pump the brakes at sixteen and then kind of see how it plays out. I'm okay to get rid of the conference championship games. I'm fine. There was a money grab, but everything's a money grab now. But now they're talking about can you do a twenty four team playoff? And of course the coaches would green like this because more coaches make the playoffs. But you start to look and you go, do we want fourteam a team that had four law losses? And you would have had a couple of those teams that would have made the playoffs last year. You would have had Ohio or Michigan. You would have had USC, you would have had Iowa. So USC and Michigan were twentieth and twenty first in the country. Both had four losses. Iowa at the end of the season rank seventeenth with four losses. This is kind of where we're headed now. It used to be if you had two losses, sorry to get in God forbid you had three, now it's four, and you go, okay, yes, Ton. 00:02:33 Speaker 4: Somehow it doesn't. 00:02:33 Speaker 5: Bother me if it's like a name school, I guess if it's a four loss team where I'm like, eh. 00:02:37 Speaker 4: That's school. 00:02:37 Speaker 5: But for you, if you say USC or Michigan or even to a lestric then Iowa, I can get excited about that. 00:02:42 Speaker 4: I would ignore the four lesson then. 00:02:44 Speaker 6: Concentrate on the team there, yes, Marvin, And then you're going to see a lot of North Texas James Madison. What if they're angry that a four loss Michigan team or four lost Iowa team gets in instead of them, like wait, what about us? So you can see that happening more so often. 00:03:00 Speaker 2: Yeah, but it should be just who are the top twenty four teams the top sixteen teams? Now it's not always that because we add automatic qualifiers, and I understand that. But let's say you're undefeated. Let's say I mean throw out a school, Liberty James Madison. You're undefeated, and then are you going to put them in? Are they going to make that final poll where they're in the top twenty four? So those are the questions that you're going to have and you're going to have a four loss team in the playoffs. I don't think you'd have a five loss team that would be in the top twenty four. 00:03:37 Speaker 7: Yeah, pulling, I think they're trying to sell that if we make a twenty four team playoff, these cute, fuzzy teams like North Texas and Navy and all those teams will get in. No, because of those twenty four spots, sixteen of them are going to be booked already with a Power four conference. They're going to find a way to appear to increase spots for other teams, but take all them for themselves. 00:03:58 Speaker 8: Yeah, Dylan, what if you basically just went off the ap top twenty five. I mean, it's essentially that would be your field. I know that's not going to be the case, but that would be kind of the most logical. 00:04:10 Speaker 2: I don't I don't think they want to leave that to chance. Yeah, I mean, they want matchups. They want to make sure they get the big schools in there. You could have maybe one Cinderella story in there. But I just think the bigger conferences are going to benefit from this. Yes, Marvin, So are. 00:04:29 Speaker 6: The college teams now playing seventeen eighteen games. 00:04:32 Speaker 2: Now, No, I think they caped it. I think it's what fifteen games. I think there's a max that you can have. I mean, oh, you could throw out out the windows. 00:04:43 Speaker 3: Yeah two. Yeah. 00:04:44 Speaker 2: It's like the NFL, the commissioner says they haven't discussed an eighteen game schedule. Meanwhile, I got Robert Kraft talking about, oh, yeah, you know, we hope to get this by twenty twenty seven. 00:04:55 Speaker 3: Like, what is it. Of course you're talking about an eighteen game schedule. 00:04:59 Speaker 7: Yes, if the regular season for everybody was twelve teams, those teams that don't get a first round by would have to play five games to win the national title. So you're looking at seventeen football games to win the national title? 00:05:12 Speaker 8: Yeah yeah, yeah, dylly, why not just apply a March Madness bracket to that at the beginning of the season. Just pick the teams that you want to be in there and just have them, you know, sudden death, duke it out. 00:05:24 Speaker 2: I don't want to scrap the season. No, no, no, I'm kidding, but oh you were Okay, I can't tell with the back row, I don't know, you know, just a couple of jokes. 00:05:33 Speaker 3: Theres Yeah, I thought you were perfectly serious. 00:05:37 Speaker 8: I mean, there's really any idea you can float out there. It's an imperfect system. 00:05:41 Speaker 2: No, it can be close to perfection. Just don't get greedy. We don't need to hurry it up. How about we how about we do something where we go, Okay, we did it one year. Now let's kind of collect ourselves. How about we reconvene and decide, you know, pros and cons? How do we tweak it a little bit? Not we we got to twelve. All of a sudden, we're in the you know, hov lane. Now we're going to twenty four. That would concern me because college athletics doesn't have a good track record recently. Okay, they keep tripping all over themselves. So I want the regular season to mean something. I want you to have a better schedule. How many games are you going to play? What are you going to do with the bowl games? How many home games do you get in the playoffs? Who's deciding the top twenty four teams? Because we don't know what the committee's talking about. I mean I had a very good source for a while knowing what the committee was talking about. So that's where I think they could go. Maybe we need to get that school in. Maybe that's school. But then once again, when somebody says, well, you always talk about you know, for TV, it's for matchups, and Notre Dame didn't get in, I'm like, yeah they did. 00:07:02 Speaker 3: Not Alabama got in. It's why and they did. 00:07:07 Speaker 2: And my source with the NCAA said, you know what, you guys kept focusing on Notre Dame in Miami, who should get in? Meanwhile they put in Alabama, and you guys were asleep at the wheel. That was the big surprise that Alabama made it. 00:07:20 Speaker 8: Right, all right? 00:07:22 Speaker 2: Got to keep an eye on all of this now, Yes, Dylan's if the goal. 00:07:26 Speaker 8: Is just to get it to twenty four teams anyways, like why put in like a couple buffer years of a sixteen team playoff? If that's where we're headed, just do it. 00:07:33 Speaker 3: I get it, I get it. 00:07:36 Speaker 2: But I just want to make sure that we just don't blow through the stop sign or we all of a sudden are going eighty miles an hour in a sixty five. We you don't have to hurry. How many years did I shout from the mountaintops? How about we go from two to four? 00:07:54 Speaker 3: That was it? 00:07:55 Speaker 2: I mean I only spent ten years on that. Just give me four school, that's all. And then they went kicking and screaming, and all of a sudden they went to four. And then they realized, oh my god, what are we doing. We got to we gotta expedite this. Look at all the money out there. So that's where we are right now. Schools will be spending some schools up to fifty million dollars on their football team. Some schools will spend thirty million dollars on their basketball team. There's no cap right now. Cap no cap, And that's what I worry about. I don't have any faith in those running these sports. I don't until proven wrong otherwise I don't. 00:08:43 Speaker 3: Yeah, Pauli and Dan. 00:08:44 Speaker 7: The other thing that bothers me, I know it bothers you. You want to move to twenty four. If it's an evitable, fine, well then how about a trade off. Put someone in charge of the regular season schedules for all teams. And I'm just picking a name out of a hat, Like Georgia starts the season with Tennessee State and Western Kentucky. Those are not attractive football games for football hands. You have to now make the regular season more attractive because you're watering it down with this playoff. 00:09:08 Speaker 8: Yeah, Dylan, Well, yeah, it's when the Citadel rolls in week one and loses by sixty I think you you lose people a little bit. 00:09:17 Speaker 2: A couple of phone calls in here, Bill in Houston, Good morning, Bill, what's on your mind today? 00:09:22 Speaker 9: Admittedly I am not a horse racing fan, but like a lot of people, I will sit and watch the Kentucky Derby almost every year. My question is, once the Derby winner announces, like Devereux or Devo did today, that they're not going to run the Preakness, to people, does interest just fall off a cliff? 00:09:41 Speaker 3: Yeah, for horse tracing. 00:09:42 Speaker 9: And a triple crown, which is now romanticized but never really a goal anymore. 00:09:47 Speaker 2: Yeah. I mean NASCAR starts out with the Daytona five hundred. Now they have all kinds of races after that, and everybody who's going to be in every race. But with the Derby, you start out with the biggest event of the year for horse racing. What if you were able to reverse this that you started with the Belmont, then went to the Preakness and ended with the Derby. Would that help any you know, interest in something like this because more people will watch the Derby than the other two races. But I just don't think these trainers and owners want to you know, hey, just because we won the Derby, we got to be in the Preakness. 00:10:25 Speaker 3: The Preakness may not. 00:10:26 Speaker 2: Work for your horse. And if you ran a race the distance of the Preakness, Golden Tempo doesn't win, Renegade does. But because it's the Derby and this horse race will probably this race horse probably do better at the Belmont because of the distance. But I understand it, like we romanticize the Triple Crown. I don't think you know, the owners think that. And if I'm the owner of Golden Tempo, I got a brand. My horse won the Kentucky Derby in dramatic fashion. Great story here, Probably be a Disney movie one day. You know, you had a female trainer in there, last to first. Now, if you'd had a triple Crown, then probably would be a Disney movie and maybe a homework movie. 00:11:18 Speaker 8: Yes doing I mean I think we talked about it the other day, maybe a little tongue in cheek, but like load management and horse racing, like I think that is a trend across all sports where it's like protect the investment has become a thing that never really used to be the case, like the nay with players, the player empowerment in general. I mean, it's funny becuse you're talking about a horse, but it's essentially the same principle. 00:11:39 Speaker 3: Jay in Delaware, Good morning, Jay, what's on your mind today? 00:11:43 Speaker 10: Here? 00:11:43 Speaker 1: Dan? 00:11:44 Speaker 11: I was talking about the twenty fourteen playoffs. I think the last five to ten years of Bowl games have become really watered down, the players opting out, and I think the twenty fourteen playoff is really a way for them to try to save these Bowl games and the playoffs being important for to stay in They have the bigger Bowl games later in the playoff, and I think that the twenty four team is just going to be a way for them to keep the Bowl games in there and keep it keep those games more relevant, and because I know, yeah, these Bowl games have lost a lot of eyes over the last five ten years and are a transfer portal and I'm curious that's to the twenty fourteen playoff. What they're going to do about the transfer portal windows when they open up and stuff like that. 00:12:27 Speaker 2: Yeah, I know there's a lot of questions here that I have. I don't think it's Hey, twenty four teams. Everybody's going to love this, everybody will benefit. I don't know if you're going to have players who are going to stay in the playoffs, if they're transferring, or they're going to go pro. 00:12:44 Speaker 3: I don't know. 00:12:45 Speaker 2: If you have somebody who's a tight end on a four lost Iowa team and you're the twenty first team in the country, I don't know. I don't think that's a four gun conclusion. Tyler in Wisconsin, Hi, Tyler, what's on your mind today? 00:13:02 Speaker 10: Dan? 00:13:02 Speaker 12: Thanks for taking my call, second time, long time. We welcomed our third daughter to our family last week and there's already talk of maybe expanding our family bracket or capping it. 00:13:20 Speaker 13: Wondering if you have any advice. You know, my wife wants to me to maybe permanently cap our our bracket, but I think we should, you know, as we do in sports, route for some chaos, maybe out of fourth to our bracket. 00:13:35 Speaker 11: What do you think. 00:13:38 Speaker 2: I wouldn't chase a boy, Okay, that would be my advice. Don't chase because you don't want to find out that you're having another girl. And then somehow be disappointed. Uh, you know, if you got to be careful with that. I have a friend who has four daughters because he had three daughters and he wanted a boy. He's got four. I have a friend who has three daughters. He has six granddaughters. Everybody wants to give him a son or a grandson. He's got six daughters granddaughters. Yes, Dylan, clearly you don't know enough about how life works. Is if you have three daughters, do you really think. 00:14:34 Speaker 8: You're getting a boy? 00:14:34 Speaker 2: If you have a fourth one like that, it's just never gonna happen. It pretty much guaranteed you're getting another daughter. Yeah, especially based on you know who you are and what you've done. You're probably paying a little penance. 00:14:46 Speaker 3: Yeah. 00:14:48 Speaker 2: God has a way of reminding reminding guys. Yeah, Oh, I'm gonna give you three daughters. How do you like that you deal with it from the other side now, yeah? 00:14:58 Speaker 8: Yes, And how do you. 00:15:00 Speaker 5: Reassured that third or fourth daughter that this was someone that was very welcome and wanted. 00:15:04 Speaker 4: It wasn't like we tried for a boy. We got stuck with you another girl. We never would have had you if we knew you were going to be a girl. 00:15:09 Speaker 2: You know, the first couple of years they're not going to realize it. It's after that probably going to be did you want a boy? 00:15:16 Speaker 8: No? 00:15:17 Speaker 3: No, of course not. 00:15:18 Speaker 2: We just named you Bill, Yes, we named you Kelly. You know, you wake up one day and you realize the room that you're in is blue, you know, not pink. You're like, wait a minute here, but don't chase. You're guaranteed have another girl. But girls are awesome, They are wonderful. They never leave you. They're great. 00:15:44 Speaker 3: Now, my first child was a boy. 00:15:46 Speaker 2: And I had guys at ESPN, two guys that I worked with, and they had girls. One had three, one had two, and they go, oh, you got your boy. And I never thought of that, that you got your boy. And then I had three daughters, and I go, well, good thing I got my boy to start, because then I probably would have been faced with that question. Yes, Tom, You've made a good. 00:16:08 Speaker 5: Point on several occasions about like saying, if you're willing to listen, the girl will tell you everything and more that you want to know a boy. 00:16:14 Speaker 4: Sometimes you've really got to dig deep. But they get a little quiet, they're not ready to share. So much. 00:16:18 Speaker 14: Yeah. 00:16:18 Speaker 3: If you listen to your daughters, they'll tell you everything. They will, and. 00:16:24 Speaker 2: Sometimes they'll tell you too much, and that's when you go, maybe go talk to your mom. But they're great at They just want to know do you are you? Are you listening or you lecturing? And that's the key because I had to learn to listen and not lecture. 00:16:41 Speaker 3: Yes, do yeah. 00:16:43 Speaker 8: I just have one sister. And the disparity between the things that we would tell our parents in high school was I was like, I'm lying all the time, Jeeves. 00:16:53 Speaker 2: Not all right, We'll take a break. More phone calls coming up. We're back after this. 00:16:57 Speaker 1: Be sure to catch the live edition of The Damn Patrick Show weekdays at nine am Eastern six am Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app. 00:17:07 Speaker 15: Hey is Covino and Rich from Fox Sports Radio Now. There's a lot of talent there. Let's see. 00:17:47 Speaker 2: Bucks owner Jimmy Haslin wants uh Yannis Uh? Does he wanted to make a decision here soon? 00:17:54 Speaker 3: Or let me see uh? Bucks owner wants the honest future. 00:17:59 Speaker 2: Oh so he's saying the Bucks have to decide here soon what they're. 00:18:04 Speaker 3: Going to do with Giannis. 00:18:05 Speaker 2: Doesn't this feel like a foregone conclusion that Giannis is not going to be there, that he's you know, they'll find a way. See if somebody wants to take him, what do they get in return? You still got music underneath me? 00:18:19 Speaker 3: Marvin? There you go, all right? Dealing with you? 00:18:23 Speaker 8: Updates, pull results, I will dan so we have who is more sensitive Carmelo, Anthony Draymond Green or Fritzy Draymond leading the charge? 00:18:35 Speaker 4: Yes, I did not would have win that. 00:18:36 Speaker 3: Okay. 00:18:37 Speaker 8: Golden Tempo not running the Preakness is smart lame, soft but understandable. 00:18:44 Speaker 3: Lame wow wow. 00:18:48 Speaker 2: Okay, who has the best odds for the draft lottery. 00:18:53 Speaker 7: Right now, as always, Washington, Indiana, and Brooklyn all have a fourteen chance for the number one pick. The next tier is Utah and Sacramento eleven point five, and it's Memphis, New Orleans, Dallas, Chicago, Milwaukee, and then it gets into those one percent chants Golden State, Oklahoma City from the Clippers of course, Miami and Charlotte. 00:19:17 Speaker 3: Okay, Eric in Oregon, Hi, Eric, what's on your mind today? 00:19:22 Speaker 10: Hey? Dan, just real quick on the whole whose career would you rather have Carmelo, Anthony or Draymond Green. I'm gonna take Carmelo, honestly, you know, all time scorer. You know, I think he's in the top ten. Paully might have to check, you know, obviously the Syracuse thing. And you know, quite frankly, you should keep his name in your mouth because I think it's an honor to be spoken by the great Salisbury Steak savory voice of the great Dan Patrick. 00:19:50 Speaker 3: Thank you. 00:19:51 Speaker 16: Eric. 00:19:53 Speaker 3: Carmelo eleventh all time. 00:19:54 Speaker 7: Score, Yeah, NBA history not counting ABA And. 00:20:00 Speaker 2: I don't think there's a wrong answer here. If Draymond Green and winning titles or being one of the greatest scores of all time. 00:20:07 Speaker 3: He also won a national championship at Syracuse. 00:20:11 Speaker 2: I wanted Reggie to answer the question because Reggie didn't win a championship, and I wanted to know Reggie was a great score, a Hall of famer. But would he look at it and say, I already did it where I didn't win. I would love to have known what it's like to win a championship or two, and Draymond won four. 00:20:30 Speaker 10: That's all. 00:20:31 Speaker 3: That's all this was. 00:20:32 Speaker 2: It wasn't criticizing condemning Melo's career at all. It was you choose this or you choose that. It's a sophie's choice for sports. You gotta make a tough decision. Yes, Dylan, what about. 00:20:48 Speaker 8: Who would you rather hang out with? Carmelo or Draymond? Forgetting recent events? 00:20:54 Speaker 3: I don't know. Melo seems like a hang. 00:20:57 Speaker 8: Yeah, I feel like that one's easier then. 00:20:59 Speaker 3: Yeah. 00:21:00 Speaker 2: Yeah, it feels like Draymond would always be like tense, you know, might be yelling at you, you know, while trying to have a sense of humor. 00:21:08 Speaker 3: Yes, Marmon, Yeah, he. 00:21:10 Speaker 6: Might be one of those guys where I might crack a joke and he'll go see that's why your dad left damn. 00:21:16 Speaker 8: Wow. Yeah, someone who says the wrong thing a lot, I don't think. I think we'd run out of steam pretty quick. 00:21:23 Speaker 2: I would have to tea up Draymond if he said that that he's If he said, oh, that's why your dad left you and your mom, then I'd have to tee him up. 00:21:33 Speaker 8: Man. 00:21:34 Speaker 6: I was like, that was a little bit harsh. I was just cracking a little joke. Yeah, but we were friends. Yeah, now it feels like mellow. You have a cigar, you know, he maybe would be mellow. And then we get past the awkward. Hey, why did you bring up Draymond in my career? And I say, mello, we're past that, man, don't worry about that. 00:21:54 Speaker 5: Yes, Todd, and Draymond has to be the cet your attention, and we know how that goes. 00:21:57 Speaker 4: How brutal is it to be with someone that feels like it's got of all about that? 00:22:00 Speaker 3: Thank you, Todd. 00:22:01 Speaker 2: Absolutely nobody inserts themselves more when they're not supposed to or they shouldn't. 00:22:10 Speaker 3: Than you enough about these guys? 00:22:12 Speaker 4: What about me? Look at my bad Newspaan shirt. 00:22:15 Speaker 2: Yeah, Todd has his Chico Bale Bund's bad newspairer Shloopers. 00:22:20 Speaker 5: Maybe if you picked your nose, what's the actually, if your wipeton knows what's in a while, people wouldn't give you so much crud all the time. 00:22:24 Speaker 2: Cru one of my favorite line crud tune in Saturday May ninth, as the Pistons faced the Cavaliers starting at three eastern. You'll find that on NBC and Peacock, which is where you also find this show. We were we stumbled last night, my wife and my daughters and I we stumbled upon the Will Ferrell scene in Old School when he shoots himself with the tranquilizer dart. Oh my goodness, it was so good. And Sean Williams with his mullet. He he almost steals the scene from Will so that you know, the guy who played Stiffler, and I ask Will. I text him right after. I said how many takes did you have on that? And he said, not many because they shoot it. And then all of a sudden he has the dart affixed to his neck his jugular, and so he said, not many takes with that, But oh god, I laughed so hard. He's and he's pushing little kids out of the way and in his voice war he falls into the pool and then you hear that Simon and Garfunkle. 00:23:39 Speaker 3: Hello darkness, my old friends. 00:23:41 Speaker 8: Yes still, I was gonna say the sound of silence and then when he's sinking to the bottom of the pool is one of the most well timed songs in a movie. 00:23:48 Speaker 3: I think. Ever, uh yeah, Pully. 00:23:50 Speaker 7: I think my favorite line of Old School is when Will's streaking, his character streaking, his wife and friends find him. He gets in the car and they start yelling him, and then he ends the scene with you think, KFC still opened such a bow on that scene. 00:24:04 Speaker 2: But I love there's so many sneaky things in that movie. When he's streaking and he backs into the back seat with his butt right in front of those the women who are in the car, and so you see his butt cheeks backing into the back seat. But I asked him, I said, what was kind of holding you together? And he said, I had this pouch that I put everything in a little little sock of sorts. But he called it a pouch so he could run freely down the street. And he said there were actual people on the street there watching him who weren't in the movie. They're just seeing this grown man and Will's like six' four running down the. Street, Yes, marvin. 00:24:54 Speaker 6: The frat pack as they were, called they put on some great movies That, Zoolander Old, school A, Akerman, dodgeball they had a run right, There Wedding. 00:25:02 Speaker 3: Crash, yeah they had some good stuff. There. 00:25:05 Speaker 8: Yeah deal Well todd And Todd phillips Directed Old. SCHOOL i think the fact that he Did Old school And The, hangover like those are Two hall of fame. Comedies you. 00:25:14 Speaker 2: Know the problem Though hangover too and Then hangover. 00:25:17 Speaker 8: Three we don't talk about those, then. 00:25:19 Speaker 3: UH i mean you got to ignore. 00:25:21 Speaker 8: Those he did also Do Joker part or whatever it's, called WHICH i haven't, seen but apparently it. 00:25:26 Speaker 3: Was yea With Lady gaga was not. Good, Yes, marvin. 00:25:31 Speaker 4: Question for the. 00:25:31 Speaker 6: Room speaking of, Movies speaking Of The, Hangover The hangover is the best movie theater Experience i've ever had in my. Life why opening night it Was friday, Night me and my girlfriend now laf went and it was. 00:25:45 Speaker 4: Packed it was sold. 00:25:46 Speaker 6: OUT i mean in the laughter throughout that entire, movie and everyone's watching it for the first. Time it's opening. Night it's the best movie theater. Experience i've ever.
