Your B2B Podcast Isn’t Working Because You’re Solving the Wrong Problem
B2B Podcasting Insights - business strategy podcast for founders and brands
Most B2B podcasts fail for one simple reason. They’re built around topics nobody is looking for, instead of the real moment a buyer realises something in their business is breaking.
In this episode, I break down why your “marketing”, “leadership”, or “productivity” episodes are getting skipped, and what to do instead.
We’ll get into:
• How to spot actual content you should be publishing, using your sales calls
• Why “topics” make your show sound like a 2014 panel discussion
• The shift from brand awareness to belief-building
• Simple ways to turn your podcast into a pipeline machine, not a weekly chore
If you want episodes your ideal clients recognise themselves in, this is the one to listen to.

Speaker: 00:00:00 So let me tell you about something that most business podcasts Speaker: 00:00:03 get completely wrong. They build episodes Speaker: 00:00:08 around Topics. Welcome to B2B Podcasting Speaker: 00:00:11 Insights with Neil Velio, founder of Podnos, a Speaker: 00:00:15 podcast agency helping you get better results from podcasting. Speaker: 00:00:19 Marketing, leadership, culture, Speaker: 00:00:23 productivity. No one's out there googling Speaker: 00:00:27 productivity, hoping that they're gonna find your take on it. If Speaker: 00:00:30 you want your show to drive business and not just tick off boxes Speaker: 00:00:34 on your content calendar, well, you gotta build around buying Speaker: 00:00:38 triggers, not topics. Let's talk about that. Speaker: 00:00:46 So, first of all, what is a buying trigger then? Well, it's that exact moment Speaker: 00:00:51 your potential client, and in this particular case, Speaker: 00:00:55 listener, realizes something is off, Speaker: 00:00:58 their old system is not working, and they've come to you Speaker: 00:01:02 to listen to your podcast to figure out why Speaker: 00:01:06 that is. Their own audience has completely stopped Speaker: 00:01:09 engaging. Maybe their sales team is ghosting their own Speaker: 00:01:13 pipeline. That's where your show should live. Speaker: 00:01:17 Think about it like this. Your ideal client doesn't wake up thinking, do you Speaker: 00:01:21 know what? I'd love to learn more about marketing funnels today. Speaker: 00:01:24 No, they don't. Contrary to what thousands of Speaker: 00:01:28 podcasts would have you believe, they wake up thinking, Speaker: 00:01:32 why did our last campaign tank even though the product is Speaker: 00:01:35 good? That frustration we've identified there, Speaker: 00:01:39 tanking marketing funnels despite good product, Speaker: 00:01:43 that is a buying trigger. It's the start of their buying Speaker: 00:01:47 journey, and it's exactly what your B2B podcast Speaker: 00:01:51 needs to speak to. Let me give you a short example that might be Speaker: 00:01:55 relevant to your own situation. If you help Speaker: 00:01:58 founders fix their sales messaging, don't do an Speaker: 00:02:02 episode called how to Write Better Copy. Everyone is Speaker: 00:02:05 doing that. What you need to do is. An episode that speaks to a Speaker: 00:02:09 buying trigger may be called what to do. When prospects Speaker: 00:02:13 keep saying, thanks for the. Information, we'll think about it carefully and Speaker: 00:02:17 get back to you very soon. Okay, we appreciate your time and Speaker: 00:02:20 effort. Same topic, different angle, but one Speaker: 00:02:24 gets skipped and one gets a play click. Speaker: 00:02:28 Potentially gets you followed. Even Speaker: 00:02:32 more potentially gets them on your email newsletter list, Speaker: 00:02:36 and ideally gets them on the end of a zoom call or Speaker: 00:02:40 teams meeting. Speaker: 00:02:46 This is why most podcasts miss this. Most Speaker: 00:02:49 B2B podcasts sound like panel discussions Speaker: 00:02:53 from 2014, because people build them around Speaker: 00:02:57 what they want to talk about, not what their ideal Speaker: 00:03:00 buyer is feeling in the moment. Right Speaker: 00:03:04 before they decide they need you, they're thinking Speaker: 00:03:08 top of funnel brand awareness. But the thing Speaker: 00:03:12 is, podcasts aren't there really for Speaker: 00:03:15 building brand awareness. They're there for building Speaker: 00:03:19 belief. They're there to be you Speaker: 00:03:23 in the room with them before you can physically Speaker: 00:03:27 get in the room with them. Look, if you want brand Speaker: 00:03:31 awareness, go make some TikToks, go pop some Speaker: 00:03:35 reels on Instagram, just shove some Speaker: 00:03:38 slop on LinkedIn. If you want trust, Speaker: 00:03:42 go make a podcast. So just how do you find your Speaker: 00:03:45 buying triggers then? Well, I'm glad you asked. Speaker: 00:03:53 Here's an exercise for you to carry out which will absolutely help Speaker: 00:03:57 you with this. First of all, listen back to your sales Speaker: 00:04:00 calls, read the transcripts, put them in Speaker: 00:04:04 ChatGPT and have a conversation with your GPT Speaker: 00:04:08 about your sales calls. Try and figure out the Speaker: 00:04:11 exact moment that a prospect says, yeah, Speaker: 00:04:15 that's our issue. That's the moment you know you Speaker: 00:04:19 have a successful buying trigger. So ask Speaker: 00:04:22 your best clients what was going wrong right Speaker: 00:04:26 before they decided to pull the trigger and work with you. Speaker: 00:04:30 Maybe scroll through your DMs and your inboxes. Look at those Speaker: 00:04:33 questions people ask you repeatedly. They're absolute gold. Speaker: 00:04:37 Great ideas for podcast episodes. In fact, Speaker: 00:04:41 use the exact questions as your episode titles. Speaker: 00:04:45 At this point, when you've got this working correctly, Speaker: 00:04:48 you're not creating content anymore. You are answering Speaker: 00:04:53 buying stage pain points out loud. Speaker: 00:04:57 You're addressing buying triggers. Speaker: 00:05:00 Let's have another crack at what this might sound like in practice. Speaker: 00:05:04 Say you're a B2B SaaS company. Instead of Speaker: 00:05:08 the future of Martech, try Speaker: 00:05:12 what happens when your CRM stops closing deals. Speaker: 00:05:17 Instead of AI and creativity, do Speaker: 00:05:21 the moment you realized automation just made your Speaker: 00:05:25 brand sound robotic. Each of those triggers Speaker: 00:05:29 a specific business pain that somebody is already in, Speaker: 00:05:33 and that's what gets your episode shared internally Speaker: 00:05:36 within teams, helping you close the Speaker: 00:05:40 sale. Get to the decision maker. Activate Speaker: 00:05:44 complete buy in. Forget the topics list. Speaker: 00:05:48 Stop trying so hard to sound smart. Yes, Speaker: 00:05:51 we know you know the thing that you talk about. You should. Speaker: 00:05:55 It's your thing. Stop trying to outsmart Speaker: 00:05:59 everybody else in your industry and instead Speaker: 00:06:03 try to sound relevant. Answer the questions Speaker: 00:06:07 they're not answering because they're too busy focusing on building their Speaker: 00:06:10 personal brands. They want to be seen as the go Speaker: 00:06:14 to thought leader on the topic in the industry. Speaker: 00:06:22 Every episode you put out, you're aiming to have Speaker: 00:06:26 the listener say in their own brain, yeah, they're Speaker: 00:06:29 talking about me right now. And that's the moment a podcast Speaker: 00:06:33 stops being content and starts becoming Speaker: 00:06:37 a buying accelerant. If you want to know whether your Speaker: 00:06:41 show is built around buying triggers or is just putting content Speaker: 00:06:45 out, or maybe just sticking around comfortable Speaker: 00:06:48 topics that are easy for you to get out there, Speaker: 00:06:52 let's let you what I do and the link to my training Speaker: 00:06:56 is in the episode description. I hope you found this Speaker: 00:07:00 particularly useful, and maybe it's activated one of your buying Speaker: 00:07:03 triggers, in which case, make sure you click that link in the Speaker: 00:07:07 description. If you did find it useful, feel free to share it with a Speaker: 00:07:10 colleague or peer in the industry, or any industry that you think Speaker: 00:07:14 might get something from the episode. Make sure you're following the podcast in your Speaker: 00:07:18 favorite podcasting app, and I will speak to you on the next episode of Speaker: 00:07:22 B2B podcasting insights. Until then, best of luck Speaker: 00:07:25 continuing your podcasting journey.
