<v Speaker 3>haven't we. Uh yeah, yeah, for sure. I mean, how
<v Speaker 3>about intriguing him going up in Backland's Key Lock in Worcester.
<v Speaker 4>I mean, listen, the Backland thing is Honestly, you could
<v Speaker 4>probably do a year or worth of episodes on Matt
<v Speaker 4>Match alone.
<v Speaker 3>I mean, there's more to come in this episode because
<v Speaker 3>we can continue the New York WWF run for Hulk
<v Speaker 3>Hogan in nineteen eighty and as we telegraphed last time,
<v Speaker 3>he had already had kind of a trial match, not
<v Speaker 3>on television, so to speak, but we, fortunately for us
<v Speaker 3>and for the rest of the wrestling world, filmed by
<v Speaker 3>a fan in the audience at the Wister Auditorium as
<v Speaker 3>he takes on WWF champion Bob Backland in February of
<v Speaker 3>nineteen eighty and as we've been reading a lot of
<v Speaker 3>these clippings and a lot of the ways he's been
<v Speaker 3>framed in marketing materials. They're ready to go with Hulkogan
<v Speaker 3>as a world title challenger right away in New York.
<v Speaker 3>I mean, it's it's time. And on this episode, Boss,
<v Speaker 3>we're going to see him wrestle Bob Backland with the
<v Speaker 3>lights on brightest for the WWF Championship. Okay, all right, excellent,
<v Speaker 3>It's going to be a nice kind of pick up
<v Speaker 3>where we left off. A lot of Tito matches here
<v Speaker 3>still to go. Really, just our last look at Hulkogan
<v Speaker 3>before he wrestles Andre the Giant at Chase Stadium. I
<v Speaker 3>won't say our last, but sort of like the the
<v Speaker 3>last glimpse we'll get of Hulkogan before he's chiefly defined
<v Speaker 3>as the guy who wrestled on that show against Andrea
<v Speaker 3>the Giant going forward, and of course, as we've already
<v Speaker 3>established forever tether to Andrew the Giant is Holk Cooke
<v Speaker 3>and dating all the way back to his first goddamn
<v Speaker 3>month back in the business in March of seventy nine
<v Speaker 3>in Alabama, and what a thrill it was to go
<v Speaker 3>on X and share some of that stuff and people
<v Speaker 3>just all coming to this realization that, yeah, it all
<v Speaker 3>happened in nineteen seventy nine.
<v Speaker 4>Honestly, that's been the one of the main, probably early
<v Speaker 4>big discoveries of this journey, a lot of his tribute.
<v Speaker 3>Yeah, seeing that Batman clip too, and realizing that, you know,
<v Speaker 3>he had quite a bit going for him in terms
<v Speaker 3>of what he could do in the ring. Just none
<v Speaker 3>of the promotions he worked for in seventy nine wanted
<v Speaker 3>to feature him that way, right, They wanted him tossing
<v Speaker 3>two guys to the mat, off to top wristlocks, you know,
<v Speaker 3>and bear hug finishes. It wasn't the greatest worker in
<v Speaker 3>the world, but what a revelation to realize that what
<v Speaker 3>we thought he evolved into later maybe in terms of
<v Speaker 3>a more varied entering repertoire, was absolutely there. It's just
<v Speaker 3>as he wrestling about back then, or it tended to be,
<v Speaker 3>or Tito Santana to get it out.
<v Speaker 4>Of him, right, which you know, which, honestly I feel
<v Speaker 4>like is is not surprising. It's just what I what
<v Speaker 4>I find confusing, I mean, honestly, for his entire career
<v Speaker 4>is why they didn't do more of that, why there
<v Speaker 4>was not as much interest I mean, obviously, you know,
<v Speaker 4>I know that the big guys fighting each other is
<v Speaker 4>obviously the is obviously the big you know, that's where
<v Speaker 4>the money is for the most part, because because Hogan's
<v Speaker 4>so big compared to most of the heels. But you'd
<v Speaker 4>think that there would have been they would have done
<v Speaker 4>an equal opportunity, you know, having him programmed against guys
<v Speaker 4>who could who could really you know, give him a run,
<v Speaker 4>give him a real run in the ring.
<v Speaker 3>Yeah, yeah, and he does have a I think we're
<v Speaker 3>going to see a lot out of Hogan that really
<v Speaker 3>we're not going to see again in nineteen eighty because
<v Speaker 3>he never really plays the heel again until nineteen eety
<v Speaker 3>seven or twelve nine ninety six in this way where
<v Speaker 3>he's sort of bumping and eating, begging off, showing a
<v Speaker 3>little bit of tail between you know, Tuck's tail between
<v Speaker 3>his legs. Characteristics. I mean, we've already seen in Memphis
<v Speaker 3>that he knows how to be a baby face. He
<v Speaker 3>knows how to hit the ring and chase people off
<v Speaker 3>and point to the guy on the floor and you know,
<v Speaker 3>signal that he's gonna snap him in half. We've seen
<v Speaker 3>some of those menerisms already and we've seen crowds kind
<v Speaker 3>of warm up to him in certain circumstances, like in
<v Speaker 3>the Garden against Denucci and stuff. It's like, wait a minute,
<v Speaker 3>they kinda they're kind of digging what this guy has
<v Speaker 3>under the surface here there. The crowds in some of
<v Speaker 3>the bigger cities are starting to get interested in trying
<v Speaker 3>to bring that out. I think of this whole coging guy,
<v Speaker 3>and it's going to be interesting to watch that kind
<v Speaker 3>of tease itself out. Because is as good of a
<v Speaker 3>champion as Bob Backlan was. I think it was pretty
<v Speaker 3>easy sometimes to cheer the heel, the colorful Heel over
<v Speaker 3>his how to doty baby face routine.
<v Speaker 4>For sure, it's already fucking cared about back then like that,
<v Speaker 4>I don't think. And he's a boring, motherfucking piece of shit.
<v Speaker 3>I'd love to talk to, you know, some of the
<v Speaker 3>that went to the Garden for fifteen years to watch
<v Speaker 3>Bruno beat the shit out of Kili Kowalski or Rashki
<v Speaker 3>or whoever the you know, whoever the Heel Djore was
<v Speaker 3>and Pedro for that matter, and just get their feeling
<v Speaker 3>on Backland because there's no way he scratched the same
<v Speaker 3>ditch as the WWF World Champion babyfaces before him for
<v Speaker 3>the audience, but still they hung on to him for
<v Speaker 3>so long. And it's not like you can point to
<v Speaker 3>anything in terms of week box office that would tell
<v Speaker 3>you that people were less interested in buying tickets to
<v Speaker 3>see Bob Beckland defend the championship more than his his predecessors,
<v Speaker 3>or less rather than his predecessors. But there is essentially
<v Speaker 3>something different. There's something very I don't know, Minneapolis, something
<v Speaker 3>very Minnesota about the boy, isn't there? Yeah, that definitely is.
<v Speaker 3>And this summer of Laps, there's going to be something
<v Speaker 3>rather Minnesota about your co chairs, Isn't that right? Boss?
<v Speaker 3>I believe so. Yes, massive announcement just last week that
<v Speaker 3>it will be a summer of lapsed SummerSlam weekend Minneapolis,
<v Speaker 3>the co chairs hit mall of America and it will

<v Speaker 3>But I'm here to let you know, do not fret,
<v Speaker 3>do not be alarmed if you are among the Solar
<v Speaker 3>Assistant members who have contacted us in recent days saying hey,
<v Speaker 3>I'm trying to buy tickets on the downstairs at the
<v Speaker 3>Dome website and says wait listed, right, that's right. We
<v Speaker 3>wait list folks were in that game. Yes, yes, but
<v Speaker 3>you will wait. After putting our heads together with staff
<v Speaker 3>at downstairs at the Dome, there is a larger, higher
<v Speaker 3>capacity room that we can move into. And so this
<v Speaker 3>is your public service announcement. If you have attempted to
<v Speaker 3>purchase tickets and weren't able to get what you consider

<v Speaker 3>Gorilla Monsoon for the first time, and that sort of
<v Speaker 3>being picked up by media in Baltimore covering the show,
<v Speaker 3>which it really wasn't televised to any great extent, or

<v Speaker 3>footage this news crew happened to shoot doing a human
