0:03
Take two because Nate didn't turn on the camera.
0:07
But this is essentially a Q&A series that we're starting.
0:11
I'm Katie Van Slyke, if you don't know,
0:12
and we have a bunch of animals here,
0:14
and a lot of you have questions about them.
0:15
So I didn't want to just do like a--
0:18
- Hi, I'm Katie Van Slyke,
0:19
and here's 10 answers to 10 questions.
0:21
- I want to do like a conversation, okay?
0:23
So that's what we're gonna do.
0:25
We've pulled from Facebook, from Instagram,
0:27
from YouTube comments, from y'all,
0:30
and we're just gonna have a conversation.
0:32
So Abigail's gonna start asking questions
0:35
that I have no clue what she's gonna ask me,
What Did You Want To Be?
0:36
which I think is gonna be the fun part.
0:38
- Okay, I think this is a good place to start.
0:41
So when you were younger,
0:43
what did you want to be when you grow up?
0:45
And it kind of goes with this other person who asked,
0:47
do you ever think about going to college
0:49
before your career took off?
0:52
- So for an embarrassingly amount of time,
0:56
I wanted to be a trick rider.
0:58
Like you know when you go to,
1:00
Abigail has her phone on right now.
1:01
- That's really, okay.
1:03
(laughing)
1:07
I wanted to be a trick rider, you know when you go to rodeos and
1:10
The girls that like ride around in circles and they'll like hang off the side
1:14
or they'll like be standing up on them or they'll jump through a ring of fire
1:18
I wanted to be that for a really really long time, but then I realized
1:21
I had zero coordination and zero upper body strength
1:25
And I hated falling off, so
1:30
So yeah that's what I wanted to be when I grew up.
1:31
But, college yeah I went to college
1:34
and then um that's a whole other story
1:37
But yeah, I did.
Does Abigail Live At Your House?
1:40
(laughing) - Okay, does Abigail live at your house?
1:45
(laughing)
1:46
- I mean, there's been times where you've lived at my house.
1:49
Like when we got snowed in and we were like,
1:51
no, you're not allowed to drive, it's too dangerous.
1:55
Cause I tend to mother her.
1:58
But no, she does not live at my house.
2:02
She lives like 30 minutes away,
2:05
but during the week she's there every single day.
2:07
But no, she does not.
2:08
It seems like it though.
2:10
- Okay, these are some questions from your YouTube video.
2:14
I think this is the most recent one.
Naming The Goats
2:15
It's "Preg checking the goats" and "Indy".
2:18
- Yeah.
2:19
- So someone said, "You should name your baby goats
2:21
"after trees this time."
2:23
I think it would be cute to do like Willow
2:25
or Sequoia or Douglas.
2:27
What do you think of that?
2:28
- Douglas.
2:29
- Like a Douglas fir.
2:31
- I didn't know that existed.
2:34
Like trees.
2:35
Well, we have Willow the horse.
2:36
- We do.
2:37
But Douglas, like an aspen Like aspen
2:41
Maple.
2:43
Maple.
2:44
They said sequoia.
2:45
Sequoia is kind of cool.
2:48
- Redwood.
2:49
(laughing)
2:50
- Come here, little redwood.
2:52
(laughing)
2:52
- So you would be open to naming them after trees?
2:55
- I think a theme would be fun.
2:56
So I'm not opposed to themes,
2:58
and that are like not common themes.
3:02
- We've also talked about like food themes.
3:05
So that's the thing, so like where I got my goats from
3:08
Kendall, she has all of her animals named after food, and so does my sister in law
3:14
So it's like I feel like that's it's done It's been done
3:17
It's still good, not hating on it But like, I kinda want something a lil different
Indy Needs A Break!
3:25
Okay, this is from the same video. This person said, "I would give Indy a pass.
3:31
She just had a baby. Obviously her body isn't ready. Let her catch her breath."
3:36
Well that sucks because she's pregnant.
3:40
But when we're breeding the horses, a lot
3:43
of the times we will breed them, you know,
3:45
again after they've just had one. So
3:47
usually they come into heat for their foal heat.
3:49
Like Indy came in really fast this year, like
3:52
five days, but generally it's like nine to 15 days
3:56
after having their baby. And that's basically in
3:59
the wild when they would get re-bred. Now horses
4:02
have such a long gestational period that they
4:04
don't know that they're pregnant for so long
4:06
that you can re-breed them pretty quickly after
4:09
they've birthed. And it doesn't really affect them
4:11
for a really long time. Like honestly, even after
4:13
the baby's weaned, they don't really get, you know,
4:16
heavy in their stomachs. They don't really get
4:18
lethargic. Like I showed one of my mares pregnant
4:21
until she was like seven or eight months
4:22
pregnant. So it's actually really healthy if you're going
4:27
to have a brood mare that is going to have
4:29
babies multiple years to keep her in like baby shape,
4:33
honestly. Like it's harder on their bodies to
4:36
allow them years like in between, especially
4:39
for older mares. If you're wanting to have your
4:41
older mares have longevity breeding wise, sometimes
4:44
keeping them pregnant for a few years is better
4:47
for them. I don't know if that makes sense, but
4:50
that's the case because they're horses and not
4:52
humans. So while it might not make sense that
4:55
humans have babies like in a row, they aren't
4:58
humans. And that's actually one of their instincts
5:00
that they want to happen. They want to get bred. I
5:02
mean, when they come into heat, they are actively
5:05
trying to get bred. And going to the other part
5:08
of the question, which is why not just let her
5:10
come into heat naturally, we do that sometimes.
5:14
But when we're trying to breed to stallions that
5:17
are not in the same state as us, and it's hard to
5:21
like schedule things, like you want to be able to
5:25
order the semen, have it get there in the right
5:28
amount of time, breed her before she ovulates,
5:30
but also breed her like not too far before she
5:33
ovulates. You know what I'm saying? And then also,
5:36
we were at the end of breeding season where
5:39
it was pretty time sensitive to get her bred.
5:43
And so we short cycled her. That's what it's
5:45
called when you give them ludalize and bring them into
5:47
heat a little bit sooner than their natural
What Does Christi Do?
5:49
cycle. So that's why. These are some comments and
5:52
questions from the day in the life of
5:54
Waylon video that we did. Someone said, this is so
5:59
interesting. Thank you so much for sharing as a
6:02
non-horsie person, I'd be really interested in
6:04
hearing about what the people do at High Point,
6:08
like Christi, for example, might be worth doing
6:11
to attract your younger followers into the ag
6:13
related fields. So like, are they asking what her
6:17
job is? Kind of like what the workers there do,
6:20
like what does she do on a daily basis to help
6:22
you and like anyone else that has stallions
6:24
there? So I don't know everything Christi does, but
6:29
she does a lot. Like could not even dream of
6:33
owning Wayland without Christi. Christi is the
6:35
backbone. Like she's essentially she's the
6:38
stallion manager at High Point. So they have, I think,
6:43
I don't want to be wrong. I think it's around 40
6:45
stallions that they manage. Some of them are just
6:48
frozen semen. And then some of them are being
6:51
collected actively throughout the entire season.
6:53
And they are on site at High Point. So she
6:56
handles all of their collections, meaning people
6:59
send in their contracts to her. She handles the
7:02
scheduling and the shipping of those. She handles
7:05
all of like the overseas stuff. So she will
7:11
talk to people from Australia and Europe, as far as
7:13
getting their semen over there. She actually just
7:16
contacted me the other day. She's like, hey, I'm
7:17
trying to get a really good bulk rate for
7:19
sending Australia semen or semen to Australia. So she
7:23
handles all that, but she probably does 10 times
7:27
what I just said. But essentially she's the stallion
7:30
manager at High Point. And she's phenomenal.
I Showed My Hog In Flip Flops
7:33
Literally don't know how she has so much in her brain.
7:37
I just thought this was funny. This person, I
7:40
guess you were wearing your flip flops in the video.
7:42
And this person said when they were in 4-H,
7:45
they did showmanship with their hog and they always
7:47
wore flip flops. So I get in so much trouble on
7:51
the internet for wearing flip flops and crocs,
7:53
but honestly, every like person that's been
7:56
raised around horses that I know, they're just so
7:58
unserious about it. And it's like, we know that
8:00
we could get our toes chopped off and we probably
8:03
should be advocating for wearing good footwear,
8:06
but like none of us can be bothered. I remember
8:09
when I was like a teenager and I'd go to
8:12
my trainer's house, we called it Camp Karen,
8:15
because we'd go there for like weeks at a time
8:16
and just ride like a million times a day. And we do
8:19
showmanship practice at the end of the day after
8:20
we went to the pool. And I'd wear like my bathing
8:23
suit and flip flops to do showmanship, which is
8:27
on the ground. So my horse is trotting next to me.
Do Mares Remember Their Foals?
8:29
So I was just dumb probably.
8:32
On that same video, a lot of people are asking like,
8:36
after they're weaned, are they ever reunited?
8:38
Do they recognize each other?
8:41
Does the baby ever see the mom again?
8:43
Do they learn to be separate?
8:45
- So, you know, I guess there's no way for us to know
8:49
a hundred percent if like, you know,
8:52
we separate Maggie and Molly for five years
8:54
and then bring them back together if Maggie's gonna go,
8:56
that's my baby.
8:57
I don't know that we know that for, you know, for sure.
9:02
But I do know that horses that are together
9:05
for really long periods of time,
9:06
they do get buddy sour, they do know each other,
9:08
and then when they're reunited,
9:09
like they have really good memories.
9:11
But I don't know when they've only been together
9:12
about six months of life,
9:13
and then they're like five years later
9:15
and it's a full grown horse.
9:16
I don't know how that works,
9:17
but in my experience,
9:20
usually we keep our foals away from their moms,
9:24
we're like out of sight, like don't even,
9:27
like we were really careful when we put Molly out with Beau
9:30
that Maggie in the pasture at night
9:32
was like completely on the other side of the farm,
9:34
like couldn't see each other.
9:36
I think it'd be safe after a couple of years
9:38
for them to go back together,
9:40
but I mean, I've seen babies get back with their mom
9:43
and start nursing on them
9:44
if they had like a six month break.
9:46
So I guess they do remember each other to a certain extent,
9:49
but we just don't even fool with it.
9:53
There's no like, oh, it's time to reunite them.
9:55
Like unless there's a reason they need to go together,
Abigail Farted
9:57
we just never do it.
9:59
- What is your funniest memory with each person in the crew,
10:04
Matt, Nate and Abigail?
10:06
- My funniest memory with Matt, Nate and Abigail?
10:10
I don't know.
10:11
I mean, it was so funny,
10:13
the music video that y'all made me,
10:16
I mean, that was kind of like all together.
10:17
Like that was just hilarious.
10:19
I'm trying to, I might need a minute to think about this.
10:22
I think one of the funniest things,
10:24
and I don't know why this sticks out to me,
10:25
is that like, I kind of put you in a position
10:28
where we went to Congress for the first time together
10:31
when you had just started working.
10:32
We didn't know each other at all.
10:34
And I was like, hey, I know this is like not professional,
10:36
but like the only room I can find has a king bed.
10:39
Like, do you mind if we sleep in the same bed?
10:40
And then that's like so unprofessional
10:42
and you're like, that's fine.
10:43
But then like,
10:46
- What are you gonna say?
10:52
- You farted so much.
10:54
In your sleep.
10:58
We didn't know each other.
11:00
And we're just sleeping in this hotel room.
11:03
And like, I didn't know if I could tell you
11:06
that next day and be like, you farted so much.
11:09
And now I can, but it was just really funny that like,
11:13
that was like on of our first things.
11:17
- You can leave that in.
11:20
I'm not embarrassed.
11:25
- I don't know with Matt and Nate
11:27
because I feel like so many things have been like us
11:29
as a crew.
11:30
Do you have something?
11:33
Are you harboring a story?
11:34
- Immediately just thinking of when we were in Texas.
11:37
- That whole trip was so funny.
11:39
So when we went to Texas,
11:43
okay, Nate, like one of the funniest times of Nate,
11:45
like we were playing Mexican train and stuff
11:47
and he was just like doing these voices
11:49
and like being so funny.
11:51
What did you think I was about to say?
11:52
You just covered your face.
11:54
- Oh, we can't say that one though.
11:56
We can't say that one.
11:58
I threw up, I laughed so hard.
12:00
But we can't say it.
12:01
- That's what I was thinking of.
12:04
- That's the thing.
12:05
There's some things that are just not for YouTube.
12:08
- You can talk about how--
12:10
- There were some hand gestures during--
12:11
- He pulled this shirt up over his head.
12:13
- I can't say that one either because of the--
12:15
- Yeah, the--
12:15
(beep)
12:18
- Bleep that out.
12:20
(laughing)
12:23
I would say with Matt and Nate,
12:25
because they're grown men with pregnant wives,
12:28
but they act like middle school children.
12:31
Just about every time we hang out, it's pretty dang funny.
12:35
I really can't pick one,
12:36
but Abigail farting is for sure hers.
12:40
We can end on Abigail farting.
Outro
12:42
- Just let that stick in everyone's head.
12:46
- Okay, so that was the first Q and A.
12:49
I'm not gonna lie, we're about to go film another one.
12:51
I'm about to change my shirt.
12:53
You'll be seeing another one of these at least.
12:54
And then after those first two,
12:56
you can tell us if you like the layout
12:58
or if you wanna see something different
12:59
or what questions you wanna see next.
13:02
I hope you enjoyed this and I'll see you in the next one.
