Creed, 3 Doors Down, WVH Mammoth: A Concert Review

<v Speaker 3>Be Serious Podcast. If you are a continuing listener, you
<v Speaker 3>are expecting us to be talking about true romance and
<v Speaker 3>full fiction. But I had some stuff this week and
<v Speaker 3>we weren't able to get to that. Interestingly enough with
<v Speaker 3>Jason and I talked about a concert in our last
<v Speaker 3>episode that was coming up, and by golly, we decided
<v Speaker 3>to go. So we are here today on the Shirley
<v Speaker 3>you Can't Be Serious Podcast? And I got one question
<v Speaker 3>for you. Are You Ready? Oklahoma City November two, twenty
<v Speaker 3>twenty four, Creed kicked off there Are You Ready tour
<v Speaker 3>and Jason and I made a surely night of it.
<v Speaker 2>The funny part is that we had no knowledge of
<v Speaker 2>this until I looked at it.
<v Speaker 3>Like the day we were recording and you were like, hey,
<v Speaker 3>let's go, and I'm like.
<v Speaker 2>You were dragging your feet a little bit and you're
<v Speaker 2>a busy guy.
<v Speaker 3>Yeah, And I'm not a big concert guy unless it's
<v Speaker 3>a small venue or I'm going to be upfront. This
<v Speaker 3>is going to be at the pay Com Center, which
<v Speaker 3>houses all of the Oklahoma City thunder fans, so that's
<v Speaker 3>a big place. I knew we weren't going to pay
<v Speaker 3>the money to get upfront on the stage. Then I
<v Speaker 3>saw that Three Doors Down was going to be a
<v Speaker 3>part of the show, right, I was like, oh, I
<v Speaker 3>got a lot of Three Doors Down on my playlist
<v Speaker 3>on Spotify. And then I found out that Mammoth Wolfgang
<v Speaker 3>van Halen is going to be the opener.
<v Speaker 1>I was like, okay, let's do it as of the
<v Speaker 1>clincher for you. I think yes.
<v Speaker 3>So we made a night of it. We invited Amanda Janic,
<v Speaker 3>but I want to go.
<v Speaker 1>You know.
<v Speaker 2>We actually talked about making it a shirly event, just
<v Speaker 2>throwing it out there and see if anybody wanted.
<v Speaker 1>To join us. Yeah, it was a little short notice.
<v Speaker 2>It was short notice number one, and it's long ways
<v Speaker 2>to go, blah blah blah, so we just said I
<v Speaker 2>would just go.
<v Speaker 1>Yeah.
<v Speaker 3>Jason and I left together and we headed to Oklahoma City,
<v Speaker 3>not just for the concert, but we made an entire
<v Speaker 3>evening of it. We played video games and I'm talking
<v Speaker 3>vintage video game. We had pizza, we had an incredible dessert.
<v Speaker 3>Then we went over to the pay Com Center to
<v Speaker 3>watch the events.
<v Speaker 2>Let me give a quick shout out to Flashback Retro
<v Speaker 2>Pub in downtown Oklahoma City. Yeah, it's just this place
<v Speaker 2>that has all these video games.
<v Speaker 1>No, it's kind of a bar.
<v Speaker 2>I mean, they've got drinks and stuff like that, but
<v Speaker 2>they have all of them. Tron Donkey Kong, I introduce
<v Speaker 2>you to Kangaroo Robotron.
<v Speaker 1>They have bad dudes.
<v Speaker 2>They have misspac Man and Cubert and Galaga.
<v Speaker 3>Street Fighter Cubert, all of them. Anything that you could
<v Speaker 3>think of as a game from the eighties that you love,
<v Speaker 3>it's probably there. And normally they charged a cover of
<v Speaker 3>like ten bucks and you just walk in and the
<v Speaker 3>video games are all free, and that includes original Nintendo sets,
<v Speaker 3>original nes sets with TVs. The TVs are even a
<v Speaker 3>little spotty, just like your TV was back in nineteen
<v Speaker 3>eighty seven. So we walk in and nobody's at the door.
<v Speaker 3>We walk up to the bar to pay our ten dollars.
<v Speaker 3>I'm like, I don't think they care. IL must to
<v Speaker 3>run the bathroom real quick, and by the time I
<v Speaker 3>got back Jason had bought into that idea because he's like,
<v Speaker 3>I stood there for five minutes. She didn't seem interested
<v Speaker 3>in taking my money. So we got to play all
<v Speaker 3>of our video games for free.
<v Speaker 4>Yeah, we did.
<v Speaker 2>We spend about an hour there. Yeah, you kick my button, tron.
<v Speaker 1>I did.
<v Speaker 3>I kicked your butt in Kangaroo. I couldn't get past
<v Speaker 3>level two. And I don't mean like level two, I
<v Speaker 3>mean the second stairway right.
<v Speaker 1>I right up the second ladder. It was awful.
<v Speaker 3>I'd never played that game before in my life, and
<v Speaker 3>I don't think i'll ever play. Monkeys kept throwing the
<v Speaker 3>apples out. I'd punched the monkey out, and he'd still
<v Speaker 3>throw the apple.
<v Speaker 1>I'm like, wait, he's punched out. How's he throwing apples
<v Speaker 1>at me? Yeah? And then we went like a block away.
<v Speaker 2>There's a great little pizza restaurant that we like, Joey's Pizza. Yeah,
<v Speaker 2>And the problem was there was a monsoon between the
<v Speaker 2>video game plays and the pizza.
<v Speaker 3>We walked out the door and this place is a
<v Speaker 3>block and a half away, and we were trying to
<v Speaker 3>decide what place to go to. We had been to
<v Speaker 3>Joey's before, and we're like, Okay, there's this place and
<v Speaker 3>that place. A couple of rain drops fall and I'm like,
<v Speaker 3>let's just go to the pizza place. It's about to
<v Speaker 3>start raining. And we walked three sets and the floodgates open.
<v Speaker 1>Right, I mean it was.
<v Speaker 3>Pouring like a waterfall on a We couldn't even make
<v Speaker 3>it a block and a half. We had to sit
<v Speaker 3>under a not completely secure awning. It was dripping down
<v Speaker 3>the back of our shirts into our boots, and finally
<v Speaker 3>we're just like, hey, it's not going to let up.
<v Speaker 3>We just got to make a run for it. So
<v Speaker 3>we entered the pizza place sopping wet, but the pizza
<v Speaker 3>was hot and the food was good.
<v Speaker 1>It was good. Food was good.
<v Speaker 2>The shout out to Joey's Pizzera in downtown Oklama City.
<v Speaker 1>Check it out for sure.
<v Speaker 3>So then we made our way to the pay comm center.
<v Speaker 2>We forgot to mention how we had to pay to
<v Speaker 2>get out of the parking lot.
<v Speaker 3>Right, So we pulled into the parking lot. It's like
<v Speaker 3>five dollars to park and I was like, oh, dude,
<v Speaker 3>no brainer, right, no brainer, because it's hard to find
<v Speaker 3>spaces down in Oklahoma City. Yep, we pull in and
<v Speaker 3>as I said, we were arcade for an hour. We
<v Speaker 3>ate for an hour, so two hours max. We try
<v Speaker 3>to leave and it won't scan your ticket. The little
<v Speaker 3>arm won't come up, the little lights aren't twinkling art.
<v Speaker 1>And we like trapped in the parking lot.
<v Speaker 3>So we tried to back up and then it was like,
<v Speaker 3>oh no, there's cars, I'm in this way. We can't
<v Speaker 3>do that, and it wouldn't scan your ticket. Finally, I'm like,
<v Speaker 3>just tit the thing that says lost ticket. It was
<v Speaker 3>like thirty dollars. I'm like what, no, right, No, we're
<v Speaker 3>not coming in on you give us a five dollars
<v Speaker 3>deal and we're walking out at for thirty because your
<v Speaker 3>machine won't work. I get out of the car, I
<v Speaker 3>walk in front of the car and it's as though
<v Speaker 3>they were watching us on camera the whole time, because
<v Speaker 3>as soon as they saw me coming, that arm just
<v Speaker 3>went right on it. You didn't even have to pay
<v Speaker 3>the five bucks.
<v Speaker 2>It's like you used the force. He just raised it up.
<v Speaker 1>I got out ready to fight, and like it just
<v Speaker 1>went wop.
<v Speaker 2>I'm like okay then, yeah, So we drive down the
<v Speaker 2>road to the pay com center. Yeah, the monsoon has stopped.
<v Speaker 2>We walk in to a crowd of mostly forties and
<v Speaker 2>fifties our age folks.
<v Speaker 3>Yeah, but there was a considerable amount of people in
<v Speaker 3>their twenties.
<v Speaker 2>A lot of young people there, yeah, and a lot
<v Speaker 2>of kids, you know, generational fans.
<v Speaker 1>Yes.
<v Speaker 3>And to be fair, it is the kind of crowd
<v Speaker 3>that you might expect to see at a Creed concert
<v Speaker 3>in Oklahoma City. I mean it was it was what
<v Speaker 3>you want I'd expect in that circumstance. I was not
<v Speaker 3>surprised by the look of the crowd at all. There
<v Speaker 3>were some mullets, a lot of people wearing the Creed
<v Speaker 3>T shirts, a lot of thirty year trash ear, jeans
<v Speaker 3>and low cut tops, some mom boobs for sure.
<v Speaker 1>Yeah.
<v Speaker 3>But what I loved about this show before we get
<v Speaker 3>into the actual show part of the show, I think
<v Speaker 3>I enjoyed looking at all of these people watch these
<v Speaker 3>bands as much as I liked watching the bands. Yeah,
<v Speaker 3>I mean they were in love. I saw a girl
<v Speaker 3>that I mean, she had to have been twenty five,
<v Speaker 3>twenty six years old, and she was rocking out. I
<v Speaker 3>mean she's surrounded by forty to fifty year olds who
<v Speaker 3>are all just sitting down to watch and she is
<v Speaker 3>standing up and singing every word and is obviously just
<v Speaker 3>in love with every note of every song that these
<v Speaker 3>guys have. Yeah, we saw girls who, gosh, they would
<v Speaker 3>look like teenagers to me down a few rows in
<v Speaker 3>front of us, who were both standing up and rocking out,
<v Speaker 3>just dancing and having so much fun. And then plenty
<v Speaker 3>of the moms were up there just singing their hearts
<v Speaker 3>out and having a great time. Everybody really, even guys,
<v Speaker 3>saw a handful of twenty something year old guys who
<v Speaker 3>are all just belting out the lyrics.
<v Speaker 1>It was great.
<v Speaker 2>It was a lot of fun, and the reaction of
<v Speaker 2>the crowd was a lot of fun to watch. And
<v Speaker 2>I'm a sucker for the single Longs, which we'll get
<v Speaker 2>into here in a minute. But Wolfgang van Halen and
<v Speaker 2>his band take the stage.
<v Speaker 1>Yes, right about seven seven thirty, I think.
<v Speaker 4>Yeah, did you know any of their stuff?
<v Speaker 3>Yeah, so one of their songs I've had for several years.
<v Speaker 3>I mean, it's him, right, he played on the album.
<v Speaker 3>He's the guy that played all of the instruments. And
<v Speaker 3>the video for this song, I've watched it. It's like
<v Speaker 3>five different hymns inside the recording studio played the guitar,
<v Speaker 3>he's playing the bass, he's playing the drums, he's singing
<v Speaker 3>the song. The song is called Don't Back Down. It's
<v Speaker 3>off his first album, which came out in twenty twenty one.
<v Speaker 3>He kind of split his set. He did six songs.
<v Speaker 3>First three songs were off of this album, and the
<v Speaker 3>second three songs were off of Mammoth WVH two.
<v Speaker 1>Okay, here's what I thought about him.
<v Speaker 2>Yeah, I didn't know any of his songs, so I
<v Speaker 2>just had to listen and enjoy. He's really gifted as
<v Speaker 2>a singer. That kind of took me off guard. I
<v Speaker 2>don't think his dad or his uncle could particularly. I mean,
<v Speaker 2>Eddie would sing some harmonies and stuff, but it was
<v Speaker 2>either Dave or Sammy, and then Michael Anthony was the
<v Speaker 2>guy harmonizing typically. I was really impressed with his voice
<v Speaker 2>for sure, And of course he can do just about
<v Speaker 2>everything that I mean. I don't know if he could
<v Speaker 2>do everything that he could do, but he was a
<v Speaker 2>very gifted guitar player as well.
<v Speaker 3>Yeah, you told me you've seen him play Eruption. He's
<v Speaker 3>played Eruption, right, And you kind of commented to me
<v Speaker 3>that you were like, man, I wish he would have
<v Speaker 3>done something original. Van Halen related. I think he probably
<v Speaker 3>can play the stuff that his dad played, but he
<v Speaker 3>has a different style, at least for the music that
<v Speaker 3>he's playing in the set that they did. It's a
<v Speaker 3>much more straightforward blues rock. I mean, he's very good,
<v Speaker 3>but it is an entirely different style and technique than
<v Speaker 3>Eddie played.
<v Speaker 2>I don't know how to say this nicely, but he
<v Speaker 2>did not say the word van Halen. He didn't introduce himself.
<v Speaker 2>He did not say my dad is Eddie. He didn't
<v Speaker 2>say the word Valerie.
<v Speaker 1>He did nothing to sort of.
<v Speaker 2>Capitalize on who he actually is, right, which I think
<v Speaker 2>is kind of a missed opportunity. But you were like, well,
<v Speaker 2>I think he's maybe forging his own path, and I
<v Speaker 2>get that.
<v Speaker 3>Yeah, I said, look him up. And he's worth twenty
<v Speaker 3>two million dollars. He doesn't need to capitalize on anything.
<v Speaker 3>He's doing it because he loves doing it. I mean why,
<v Speaker 3>I mean, if he didn't love doing it, you don't
<v Speaker 3>have to do it, right, he didn't have to work
<v Speaker 3>another day in his life if he doesn't want to.
<v Speaker 3>So he must love doing it. And I think a
<v Speaker 3>part of that is like you said, he's forging his
<v Speaker 3>own path. He wants people to love his music, for
<v Speaker 3>his music and his name as opposed to his dad's
<v Speaker 3>or his uncles or anybody else. Yeah, okay, Plus he
<v Speaker 3>got to play with them for a while, he did,
<v Speaker 3>I mean with David.
<v Speaker 2>Sure, he replays Michael Anthony in the band as the
<v Speaker 2>bass player.
<v Speaker 1>Right. He was great. I thought he was fun.
<v Speaker 2>I enjoyed him, very gifted. Didn't quite command the stage
<v Speaker 2>like Dave or Sammy, but he's a young guy.
<v Speaker 1>He's working on it.
<v Speaker 3>He was still getting out there and getting after it
<v Speaker 3>for sure.
<v Speaker 2>After he was done, they played six songs, like you said,
<v Speaker 2>three from the first album, three from the second. Then
<v Speaker 2>we got Three Doors Down.
<v Speaker 1>What a fantastic show that was.
<v Speaker 2>First of all, they have great songs that are well
<v Speaker 2>recognized people could sing to.
<v Speaker 1>Kryptonite is a banger, right, yeah, when I'm.
<v Speaker 3>Gone Citizen Soldier. There were a ton of great bites
<v Speaker 3>that they did.
<v Speaker 1>Right.
<v Speaker 2>I thought the lead singer for Three Doors Down was
<v Speaker 2>so likable from the stage. Absolutely, he would say things
<v Speaker 2>like God, bless you my friends. You know, he kept
<v Speaker 2>calling us his friends. Yeah, and it was a very
<v Speaker 2>you know, they're playing rock music, but it's sort of
<v Speaker 2>a country boy kind of feel to it.
<v Speaker 4>Yeah.
<v Speaker 3>I mean they're from Mississippi, tiny town in Mississippi, yep.
<v Speaker 3>And I say they the original band and all went
<v Speaker 3>to high school together. He wrote Ryptonite when he was
<v Speaker 3>fifteen years old sitting in his classroom one day. Over
<v Speaker 3>the years, the other band members that were with him,
<v Speaker 3>and there were only two others. That's why they're three
<v Speaker 3>doors down or not with the band anymore. Right, it's
<v Speaker 3>just him. He's the originator, and he's the only one
<v Speaker 3>that's still a lasting member of the band. And he's
<v Speaker 3>a guy who's our age. He was wearing a trucker
<v Speaker 3>cap and blue jeans and a T shirt and had long,
<v Speaker 3>luxurious hair coming out of the back. I don't know
<v Speaker 3>if it was a mullet or if it was real
<v Speaker 3>long hair, because he kept that hat on the whole time.
<v Speaker 3>He literally looked like a guy you might see at
<v Speaker 3>a truck stop.
<v Speaker 2>He looked like a gas station attendant has headed big.
<v Speaker 4>He was on.
<v Speaker 1>Yeah, I didn't even like it. Hit it big like
<v Speaker 1>he's looked like a just blue jeans T shirt guy. Yeah,
<v Speaker 1>it a great time.
<v Speaker 2>Now I was going to make a comment on the
<v Speaker 2>fact that Creed has made a public statement we're not
<v Speaker 2>a Christian band. The lead singer for Three Doors Down,
<v Speaker 2>Brad Arnold, he got up and gave a little mini
<v Speaker 2>church service.
<v Speaker 3>When we talked about Creed, they wanted to specifically say
<v Speaker 3>we're not a Christian band. He started talking, and it
<v Speaker 3>was what I expected to be kind of the standard.
<v Speaker 3>You know, you find it within yourself to do this.
<v Speaker 3>They started playing Away from the Sun right and he
<v Speaker 3>described it as one of his favorites and often his
<v Speaker 3>actual favorite song because he kept coming back to it.
<v Speaker 3>He started talking about how sometimes you feel like you're
<v Speaker 3>not enough, and and social media makes you feel like
<v Speaker 3>you're not enough, and friends and family make you feel
<v Speaker 3>like you're not enough. And let me just tell you
<v Speaker 3>that you're enough. Words come out of his mouth because
<v Speaker 3>Jesus Christ gave his life for you. And I was like, whoa.
<v Speaker 3>He flat out just said.
<v Speaker 1>Jesus Christ in a non vain way. It was impressive
<v Speaker 1>to hear. When he was talking about the song away
<v Speaker 1>from the Sun.
<v Speaker 2>Yeah, I looked at it and it spelled Sun on
<v Speaker 2>the album, but it's almost like he was saying it's end.
<v Speaker 3>Yeah, he said that in those opening remarks when he
<v Speaker 3>was talking about being away from the sun, he meant.
<v Speaker 1>It in the Jesus sense, that's right, scene of God's sense. Yeah.
<v Speaker 2>Well, he also encouraged us to vote. And this was
<v Speaker 2>before the election.
<v Speaker 1>This was November two.
<v Speaker 3>He started off by saying, we got an important election
<v Speaker 3>coming up. It doesn't matter who you vote for. And
<v Speaker 3>then he's like, well, yeah, it does matter no matter
<v Speaker 3>who you vote for.
<v Speaker 1>Get out there and vote.
<v Speaker 3>Get out there and vote, and then said a few
<v Speaker 3>more words and said, God bless America.
<v Speaker 2>The dude was so likable, so friendly, it was warm.
<v Speaker 3>We cannot do this without you, and I cannot tell.
<v Speaker 1>You how much we appreciate you. We are so proud
<v Speaker 1>to be out here with our brothers.
<v Speaker 3>Are Creed. That was to compare the two shows of
<v Speaker 3>Three Doors Down and Creed. Creed was polished, yes, and
<v Speaker 3>the Scott Stapp talked to the audience throughout that just
<v Speaker 3>like Brad Arnold did. But Brad felt like he was connecting,
<v Speaker 3>like he was a guy you could just sit down,
<v Speaker 3>hang them, have a beard with, hang out with and
<v Speaker 3>he'd be an easy going, friendly guy.
<v Speaker 2>I totally agree, and I enjoyed both performances, but Creed
<v Speaker 2>was more of a performance.
<v Speaker 1>Right.
<v Speaker 2>They were about to take a trip, join us on
<v Speaker 2>this journey, and he's like, welcome my friends.
<v Speaker 1>Yeah, God bless you. Yeah.
<v Speaker 3>He was very Mississippi, and Scott's staff was very Jim Morrison.
<v Speaker 3>He's still doing that thing where he kind of half
<v Speaker 3>squats and it's like you're taken a snapshot of him
<v Speaker 3>in the middle of a hip thrust.
<v Speaker 1>Yeah, he's still doing that.
<v Speaker 3>He's got platforms up there so he can jump up
<v Speaker 3>and stand tall, thank goodness. Though not one time did
<v Speaker 3>he open his arms wide open.
<v Speaker 2>I told you I would have eaten that stuff up
<v Speaker 2>as sixteen, seventeen, eighteen year old. Yeah, I want to
<v Speaker 2>take a journey. Let's take a journey. But I'm fifty
<v Speaker 2>years old. I'm like, just play the songs, dude.
<v Speaker 1>Yeah, you're just a guy. What are you doing right now?
<v Speaker 3>Speaking of that, you told me we've got a guy
<v Speaker 3>who's a big fan that actually was working security. Yeah,
<v Speaker 3>the infamous Chicago show where people then the band because.
<v Speaker 1>It was such a bad show.
<v Speaker 2>Okay, so we talked about this story. In last week's episode.
<v Speaker 2>Scott's staff went crazy and was so drunk or so
<v Speaker 2>high he couldn't perform, roll around on the floor and slur.
<v Speaker 2>In his words, the fans got really upset. One of
<v Speaker 2>their money back. Our buddy, Sean Niehoff reached.
<v Speaker 1>Out to me.
<v Speaker 2>He's like, listen, I was working security guard of that
<v Speaker 2>at that show, but it was more than just fans
<v Speaker 2>really kind of wanting their money back. The fans were pissed,
<v Speaker 2>and he's like, I thought they were gonna riot. Like,
<v Speaker 2>it wasn't just fans wanting their money back. They were
<v Speaker 2>coming at the security guards going, we demand our money back.
<v Speaker 1>Because Wow, that show got out of control.
<v Speaker 4>Wow.
<v Speaker 1>Sean even said, he goes.
<v Speaker 2>I sing in a band.
<v Speaker 1>Maybe I didn't go up there.
<v Speaker 3>And see I've only heard him one hundred thousand times
<v Speaker 3>on the radio this year.
<v Speaker 2>Sean was ready to step in and save the night Man.
<v Speaker 2>But he did say that it was very nerve wracking.
<v Speaker 2>That was like one of the only times the show
<v Speaker 2>ever got kind of out of control.
<v Speaker 3>Yeah, I mean yeah, and thousands of fans angry coming
<v Speaker 3>at you.
<v Speaker 1>That's terrifying.
<v Speaker 2>And he said that he still is a fan of Creed,
<v Speaker 2>but it was sort of painful to watch the frustration
<v Speaker 2>on Mark Damante's face.
<v Speaker 1>Yeah, we're better than this. What are we doing, Harry?
<v Speaker 1>You know how embarrassing? Right?
<v Speaker 3>Well, that was not the show that we saw. What
<v Speaker 3>we saw it was an incredible show. If you have
<v Speaker 3>a chance to go watch that Creed show. If if
<v Speaker 3>you get a chance, it is worth the money, worth
<v Speaker 3>the money to see the two opening acts alone. But
<v Speaker 3>then Creed, they put on a heck of a show. Pyrotechnics,
<v Speaker 3>fantastic sound, fantastic performance. The guys were getting along splendidly,
<v Speaker 3>putting their arms around each other like I didn't since
<v Speaker 3>any animosity between Mark and Scott at all, and Brian
<v Speaker 3>Marshall's back with a band playing with them.
<v Speaker 1>It was a great show.
<v Speaker 2>Let's talk about the setlist real quick, because I think
<v Speaker 2>they've played some songs that they haven't played in a
<v Speaker 2>long time, and they played their hits.
<v Speaker 3>So what do you got for me on this spide
<v Speaker 3>So the first song that they played was Bullets. Then
<v Speaker 3>they played Freedom Fighter and that's the first time they've
<v Speaker 3>played that song in twenty two years. The last time
<v Speaker 3>they played it was New Year's Eve two thousand and
<v Speaker 3>two before their first breakup. Right, it was the first
<v Speaker 3>time they played that song with Brian Marshall because they
<v Speaker 3>had let Brian. I don't even think I mentioned this
<v Speaker 3>story on our Creed episode, but Brian had gone on
<v Speaker 3>some show and said Eddie Vedder wishes he could write
<v Speaker 3>songs as well as Scott's Stapcan and they were like, dude,

<v Speaker 3>started cheering loud. Sure enough, they came right back out
