Speaker 1: This is Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage.

00:00:04
Speaker 2: Now here's Matt Jones.

00:00:06
Speaker 3: Welcome everyone in Kentucky Sports Radio. Monday, September the sixteenth. I am Matt Jones here in Somerset or Burnside, Kentucky for the KSR Golf Scramble at Woodson Bend. It is our third and final scramble of twenty twenty four and it's in Summerset. And I have to tell you, I really that each of the scrambles I like for different reasons. I really like this one because it's probably the one we get to interact with people the most because I don't play, so I get to meet everybody on eighteen and looking forward to it today.

00:00:36
Speaker 4: And you give a.

00:00:37
Speaker 3: Shown the Clark's Puppet Shop phone line eight five nine two eight oh twenty two eighty seven. A Vision Auto glass text machine is seven seven two seven to seven four five two five four in this edition sponsored by the tjsmid love as you call Tj'll make them pay. It's a beautiful day. We've been blessed rying at these scrambles with great weather this year.

00:00:54
Speaker 4: Perfect.

00:00:55
Speaker 3: It is actually much cooler today than it was for me. Yesterday in Green Bay, where I nearly fell over sweating so much. Perfect day for this scrim.

00:01:03
Speaker 2: It is awesome out here today, and it is so beautiful out here. Every time I come out and I'm like, man, this is one of the nicest hidden gems on our state. It's beautiful, it's the weather's great. Always have a great time. I'm looking forward to it.

00:01:14
Speaker 3: It is Mario thinks, we're like, this is the most mountains he's ever seen. I said, this is just the edge of the mountains. Wait till you get deep. But it is beautiful out here. I love this place.

00:01:22
Speaker 1: I stayed here yesterday, so I'm making a little weekend out of Woods and Bend. It's also one of my favorite golf courses.

00:01:27
Speaker 3: It's a very cool golf course. Yeah, for those of you that ever played Woods and Bend, it's a nice It's just a few times there's some shots you can get an advantage on. You definitely are gonna hit a few condos, which is part of the experience. Yeah, Yeah, it's that is it's it's it's very Uh, it's very mountain in the sense of there's there's cut like you can cut through and you can take short cuts, but you gotta know where they are in order to do it. So the text machine is seven seven to two seven seven four five two five four. I'm sure we will have people call eight five nine two eight oh twenty two eighty seven. Ryan, you got to talk about this game a lot on the postgame show, So I hope you're okay if I do a little yet, and I want you to so Kentucky loses thirteen to twelve. You know, hey, my guys, if you don't mind not sir, hey, uh, the we had a I watched the game in a casino in Milwaukee, and it was I would like a lot of people go, well, it's gonna be on in the background while I do other things. And then all of a sudden, I'm screaming and jumping around like a wild man, thinking we're about to pull off maybe the biggest upset, uh in Kentucky history. We were at a casino where most everyone else was there to watch the Canelo fight, and one TV was on Kentucky Georgia, and I was losing. I was losing it, so was Mario. My friend Adam cooling Back just happened to.

00:02:49
Speaker 2: Be in Milwaukee.

00:02:50
Speaker 3: He's everywhere, and the three of us were going nuts. You know, let's talk about what I think are the overwhelming positives. Okay, it's gonna be easy to talk about what we talk about last, but the overwhelming positives. We took the number one team in the country that for four years has only lost to one team in the regular season, Alabama, and we played them to the final play. And not only did we play them to the final play, for a lot of the game, we were as good, if not better. It was not fluky. As a matter of fact, no flukes were in our favor.

00:03:18
Speaker 2: That's true.

00:03:19
Speaker 3: They fumbled it three times, we didn't recover any of We had a potential pick six, we didn't get it. Actually, I'll be in the minority of Kentucky fans. I think they made the right call. I don't think as much as I wish it was a pick six, I don't think it was. So we didn't get any flukes. We played them straight up, we played them heads up, and we were right there. We lost, but we were right there. So I can't think that's anything but a positive in the grand scheme of things. Second, I thought there was a chance they quit after what happened last week. I thought there was a chance they could quit and the season would go completely off the rails. If we lost like we did last year fifty one to six, We're sitting here going are we gonna win three games this year? Yeah? Instead they go out and fight. It was one of the best crowds just on television. Now I wasn't there, but one of the best crowds I've seen. I don't know if it was the fact that regular season ticket holders maybe gave their tickets away and people who don't normally get to go. But we were on the pregame show wondering is it gonna be forty percent Georgia fans. It wasn't. I don't know what it was, maybe ten, but the Kentucky fans were loud, and on.

00:04:28
Speaker 4: Television it looked amazing.

00:04:31
Speaker 2: It did.

00:04:32
Speaker 3: It looked amazing for whatever reason. You know, we've talked about how the SEC network and ESPN sometimes it doesn't feel like it's loud. On ABC, it felt loud. It was cool with the night. I don't think it could have looked better. And then the defense played an offense that has run through college football and did as well as anybody's ever done against You know, they've only scored under twenty points three times in the last five years in the reg season, and they're all against us, which I think is crazy but true. So that's all the positives, and overall, I'm gonna tell you I come out of it a lot more positive about this team in UK football than I did last week. I am frustrated by the end. I am adamant. I don't understand why they punted that ball. I said it in the moment, I tweeted it in the moment. You cannot punt that ball. You can't. You just can't. Numbers wise, you can't. The numbers are clear. Your best chance is to is to go for it. I'll explain why in some more detail in a minute. I hated that. I also hated that there was a fumball and it looked like our guys had quit on the play and if they had just fallen on the ball, we would have had a chance to win. But I think they thought he was going out of bounds and they quit on the play and the ball just laid there. Overall, I'm still positive I'm gonna think about that decision not to punt for a long or excuse me, two punt for a long time. But I also think it's a positive day. Ryan and I. You know, in the moment, when you're frustrated, as I was about the decision to punt, it's easy to overlook the big picture, which is, you know, we were right there with the chance to pull off. There was a person on Twitter I saw when we were driving that said this would be the biggest regular season upset in college football in fifteen years, and I actually think that might be true, and we were really close.

00:06:34
Speaker 2: It's gonna be interesting to see where our heads are at as a fan base after Saturday. You're right, you know, do we come out of it feeling a lot better about our team and what they can do this season? But you're right, they were that close of a program changing win that could have resonated for years and years and years to beat Georgia that had a forty one game winning streak, beat Kentucky with fourteen to fifteen times in a row.

00:06:55
Speaker 3: And you had him.

00:06:56
Speaker 2: If you told me before the game we were gonna hold Georgia to one touchdown and thirteen points, I'm thinking we win.

00:07:01
Speaker 3: You know, as bad as the offense at times looked and still as I think our pass protection on offense is just brutal. We ran it down their throats most of the game. Demi Sumo, he was aw star bab come like how many tackles did he break? How many times did he get hit? And keep going? I mean our offense as a whole didn't look great, but they could run it right down their throat. Demmy.

00:07:26
Speaker 1: I mean there were lots of bright spots, but Demmy really shined. That's a guy that was on the team last year, didn't get a lot of carries, kind of more thinking of him getting receptions, never thought of like a work horseback. You could just hand it off to over and over, but he was given it to number one Georgia. I'm almost just as mad about them stop running the ball before the post tame the actual punt. I mean it was second and eight, you're looking at four down territory. I wish they had just kept handing it off to him because passing clearly wasn't working. He was I think he was the MVP for Kentucky even the outcome weather of their favorite just because they went in. There were two scholarship players backfield against Georgia.

00:08:01
Speaker 4: And play well.

00:08:02
Speaker 3: All right, let's go over the specific decision making there at the end, because I think Drew hit there are two points. Number one is the question of whether or not to punt. I say this with all due respect to folks, and I knew Mark was gonna punt, but you do not punt there, and and you don't punt there. It's a numbers game, and let's just play out the scenarios. If you go for it, it's fourth and eight, you're gonna have to throw in that situation. Nick Rouse looked it up. On throws we made of eight yards or more, we were three for eight. Let's just assume we have a three for eight chance, which is about thirty seven percent chance of completing it. There's also the possibility that he could scramble for a first down. So let's say there's a forty percent chance of making Will you all grant me, Let's just say it's a forty percent, okay, sixty percent chance. You don't, first of all, if you tell me before the game. And by the way, if we get the first down, we're in field goal range. Oh yeah, Now that doesn't mean he's gonna make it, but we're in field goal range and he's made four for four so far. Yep. If you had told me before the game you have a forty percent chance on one play to beat Georgia, would we have taken it on?

00:09:17
Speaker 2: Everybody jump on that.

00:09:19
Speaker 3: Everybody would have taken everybody. Now, let's look at what you have to do if you punt to win. First of all, you want to you'd love to pin him inside the ten. But our punter's not that great. He's just not He averages thirty seven yards. We end up getting it at what they get the sixteen seventeen something like that. Now, if you're gonna win, you're gonna have to stop them three and out. I don't know what the percentage chance of that is, but let's give us the benefit of that out. Let's say it's a sixty percent chance we stop them three out. All right, Their punter average forty eight yards of punt.

00:09:59
Speaker 5: He's want to go.

00:10:00
Speaker 3: He's one of the best in the country. So now take whatever yard line they're going to and then add forty eight yards. That probably gets us the ball at the twenty eight or thirty, which means we need to go thirty to thirty five yards with probably a minute left. If you don't believe you can go fourth and eight, what makes you think you're gonna get thirty five yards? So you're gonna have to a stop them on a three and out and then b go get thirty five yards and you're not gonna be able to run the ball because you're not gonna have any timeouts, which means you're gonna have to throw the whole time. Give me the fourth and eight, Drew, I mean, I'd rather have that choice. I want to talk about the decision on second and eight in a minute, But even with it fourth and eight, it's a no. And you're playing the number one team in the country. You got nothing to lose. You got nothing to lose. You gotta go. That's the big thing. It's Steu's mentality.

00:11:00
Speaker 1: If you're playing a vanity, Okay, I'll hear you out on Punnett, play defense. This is Georgia. No one expected you to even be in this moment. Let's gamble a bit, Let's go for it. You don't get these opportunities very often. Have some confidence in your team and see what happens. It was kind of felt like a surrender. There, which you know, that's just kind of the brand of football he plays. He's not gambling much, and that's what he's gonna do. He said after the game.

00:11:22
Speaker 3: I don't regret it one bit, And ultimately there's so much about what Mark's done in this program I respect it is the fact his playing style is why we were in that game. His recruiting mentality is why we're in that game. The toughness he instills is why we're in that game. But at the end of the day, ninety percent of how he coaches I agree, But the last ten percent is a big ten percent, and we're not good at it. He's not aggressive enough in the moment. And he's also everybody's got strengths and weaknesses. Stoops's biggest weakness is time management, and it's always been like that. Let me give you a small example that doesn't matter in the but let me just give you an example. Once you go back and look, there's two minutes and eight seconds left on the clock and Georgia has the ball. They Georgia has the ball, Kentucky lets the clock run out to the two minute warning, and then after the play they call their final time out at one point fifty two in the casino. When it gets to two o eight, you know what, I'm screaming, call time out, because if you call it at two oh eight, then you get the two minute warning at two minutes. Guess what you just did. By doing that, you saved eight seconds. You would have saved eight seconds. He let it run to the two minute warning, then calls the time out after and he cost us eight seconds. Now, we weren't gonna win, but at the end of the game that eight seconds, we would have had twenty seven seconds at the end instead of nineteen seconds. It's a little thing. I don't think anybody else has mentioned it, but you cost yourself eight seconds by letting it run. Those are little things, Drew that.

00:13:22
Speaker 6: We always do, always like, and it's because they just don't have the person on there, the math person whose only job is to sit there and.

00:13:34
Speaker 3: Look at the clock. And that that bothers me.

00:13:37
Speaker 1: I'm I think I'm just as mad or even more mad that they weren't aggressive before the half where that same thing happened. Jammy broke a run, he had a beautiful spin move. Hit the circle button on him. When he goes down, there's nineteen seconds left. They didn't call a time out till fifteen seconds. I mean four seconds. It's four seconds, and I'm you know, a lot of people thought with non seconds. I beely was it's worth throwing one up today, and one say don't get this intercepted.

00:14:01
Speaker 5: Dang, go up and get it, but at least take one shot at that.

00:14:03
Speaker 3: I was okay with that one And the reason I was okay with him not doing is we didn't have a timeout. If he gets and if he gets sacked, you have to say, Brock, you're rolling out.

00:14:14
Speaker 4: I don't know if I trust him. I just don't.

00:14:15
Speaker 1: I mean, if you had called that time out four seconds earlier and it's thirteen instead of nine, it's just another example of they were wasting time in a critical situation.

00:14:23
Speaker 3: Into the first half. Didn't bother me as much because I thought going into halftime with the lead is good. But I understand there are people who agree with you too. I just just frustrating. But I don't want to overlook the overall, which is I think this was an amazing performance and the staff deserves a lot of credit. And part of me wants to say to Mark, if you had just gone for it, this would have been at like he made the decision that led people to almost overlook what had happened the rest of the game were Do you think there's any fan ryn that would have been upset at him for going for no? Anybody what any of you all been upset for them going for no? There's no I think if they go for it and don't get it, first of all, you still have a chance. You're kind of remembered they got those thirty yards in two plays, you still had a chance. But I also think people would have said, well, you know what, we left it all on the field, And ultimately that's what I wish they had done.

00:15:26
Speaker 2: You know, Mark Stoops knows more about football and his little pinky than we all know combined. But the fact that they didn't at least take a shot against the team that nobody's been able to beat, nobody's come close to beating them, but Alabama, for crying out loud, why not take a shot? And you know, after the game, he said, if it was fourth and three or fourth and close, he said, if it was.

00:15:45
Speaker 3: Fourth and six, that's two yard for fourth and six, you're gonna have to throw it as well, So why not forth and eight.

00:15:52
Speaker 2: You know you mentioned all your scenarios too. If you do throw, you got a chance for a PI. You know that, even that player up before halftime.

00:15:59
Speaker 3: Though, look at the Chiefs gag. You have a chance for a PI there at the end as well. Eight five nine two eight oh twenty two eighty seven. I want to talk about the thing Drew talked about about the play calling there at the end, and we'll do a lot more. We're here in Somerset, second hour. I'm gonna tell you a little bit about Mario. On my trip to Green Bay. We had quite an experience one night that I think is that people will like, we'll be right back this Kentucky Sports Radio.

00:16:23
Speaker 5: That's the old.

00:16:25
Speaker 3: Welcome back Tukey Sports Radio text machine seven seven two seven seven four five two five four. One person writes, mat, I totally disagree with you on the interception. You can't overturn that should have been a pick six. Here's my only argument why I don't think it is one of two things happen. Either it hits the ground in which it's incomplete. Yep. If you think he caught it, which I think is the second thing, then he's down. He's so like he's either down or it's incomplete. The only way it's a pick six is if he's going to the ground. It doesn't hit the ground and he's juggling it. I don't know how you can look at that and think that's what it is. I wish it was, but you would have to say it didn't hit the ground, he didn't catch it, but it was still moving in his hands and Drew I just don't see how you can see that from the video. Yeah, you do.

00:17:14
Speaker 1: Almost needed to just bounce off his hand. That's flat on the ground, kind of like he's scooping it up. But since they did call it, uh the way we wanted in real time, I was hoping they wouldn't be able to overturn it because that place was on fire. That would have been a moment we talked about.

00:17:27
Speaker 3: Dec I've had people say to me that we're there, obviously I wasn't there. That they think that was the loudest moment in Kroger Field history. Was that was that? I don't know because I wasn't there. But the spontaneous excitement rhyme was as loud as they can ever remember.

00:17:42
Speaker 2: For a couple moments there, we all believed, we all bought in that that's we're gonna beat Georgia. We all thought about it. But for that that play right there, man, Again, the ball just did not bounce Kentucky's way for the second game.

00:17:55
Speaker 3: Second game in a row.

00:17:56
Speaker 1: Yes, say, going into that game to beat at Georgia, you need a crazy and that would have been the point.

00:18:00
Speaker 5: And then when it happened, you're like, oh my goodness, there it is, but ripped from us.

00:18:04
Speaker 3: All right, let's talk about what you said. Second, Nate, you have the ball. My view is, and again I don't say this to be rude to Mark Stoops, but I don't think they think two and three plays ahead. I just don't think they do. And I think you have to think, Okay, we're going for this on fourth down no matter what, and then you make play calls like that, and I think you probably run at least once Drew. Now, I'm not gonna crush bush Hamden because I think he actually called a great game. You know, whatever you want to say about how good our offense is or not, he called a game that had us have a chance to win. But I do think they messed up by not running on at least one of those two plays.

00:18:45
Speaker 1: Yeah, surprisingly, Demmy was getting downhill running on them. The line was getting some good holes. Hamden, at least earlier in the game, he kind of, you know, they couldn't do anything the week before, everything got short as a little more east and west, throwing out not not deep down the field, not vertical because they weren't getting vertical against Georgia. So I like that he kind of worked that in, especially in the first half, to get vander Griff at least get some completions and some confidence going.

00:19:09
Speaker 3: Stoop said something like in the last and this is an amazing stat that something like in the last five years, there've only been like eleven passes over twenty yards against Georgia's defense. It was some crazy number in the red zone. It was some crazy number. But still I wish they had done that. But overall, I think Brad White and Bush Hamdon and Stoops for the pregame, I think the coaches had that team about as well prepared as you could have.

00:19:38
Speaker 5: I'm with you.

00:19:39
Speaker 1: I thought there might be a scenario where they quit in the season too. In a way, I said this on our rapid reaction. You don't have moral victories, but I felt a little bit of some confidence going forward out of that game.

00:19:50
Speaker 3: Well, there's a guy here, Ryan, who said, it just makes me more frustrated about South Carolina because imagine if you had beaten South Carolina and then had that game, we'd be sitting here going, who knows, maybe you know, the playoffs, we'd be unbearable.

00:20:04
Speaker 2: I'm glad you said that about Hamidy, because I think they really kind of he kind of adjusted his scheme on the flo because we were running the ball so well against Georgia and if you do run it a couple times in that scenario, fourth and two is a lot more manageable than fourth and eight exactly.

00:20:17
Speaker 3: You know, let me, how do we have an offensive line that is so good at run blocking and so terrible at pass blocking? Have you ever seen one that's more? I mean, we've run the ball. We ran the ball downhill on South Carolina. Why is it that that that we are able to run? I mean, people who are offensive linemen might be able to tell me, But how is it we are so good running downhill and we can't pass protect at all?

00:20:43
Speaker 2: I don't know.

00:20:44
Speaker 1: But if you had told me two weeks ago, you know we have this team we've been so excited about with Dane, Barren Brown, Macklin. Then you have practice your whole backfields out. If you'd told me against number one Georgia, we're running down their throat, you know, it seems a little upside down with how we thought this would go.

00:21:00
Speaker 3: Big shout out though to that defense.

00:21:02
Speaker 2: Ye oh my goodness.

00:21:03
Speaker 3: I mean Kentucky's defense were awesome. They were they were awesome. I mean they were awesome. What again, like South Carolina they had one really good drive. But besides that, Kentucky's defense when when Brock fumbled it to hold them to a field goal right there, when it felt like, all right, well that's the guy. Yes, that was I mean, you gotta give that defense credit.

00:21:25
Speaker 2: That was Georgia's I think first first trip on our side of the field was that fumble and his ion Childress. I think set the tone early man. He had a couple of big hits, knocked out a pass.

00:21:34
Speaker 3: Did he had like eleven or thirteen, had like some crazy amount of tackles for lost early.

00:21:40
Speaker 2: Yeah, I'd set the tone I think for the defense. I think everybody really got fired up after that what he did.

00:21:45
Speaker 1: Ty Bryant made a huge tackle, he stepped up. They were kind of got a slow start.

00:21:49
Speaker 3: Dean Walker had a double team on every single play and a lot of the guys. You know, his numbers at the end of the year are probably not gonna be what people but like when they watched the tape at the draft and they see how that dude is taking up two blockers on every as. Part of the reason, you know, we were able to get so much pressure at times was because of him.

00:22:10
Speaker 1: Yeah, He's just not a position you're gonna see show up in the in the box score much. But he takes up so much attention on that line and eats a blockers. I mean, we haven't seen anyone like him. Did you think it was targeting? That was targeting?

00:22:22
Speaker 5: Oh, definitely target that damn face mask?

00:22:24
Speaker 3: Yeah, and how was that that was? I mean that was off his head, yeah, and then it was on us. I don't understand that. All right, We'll take your calls very back. Ks R. TJ. Smith, personal injury attorney called TJ. He'll make them pay.

00:22:38
Speaker 2: No more of Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage. Here's Matt Jones.

00:22:43
Speaker 3: Runner back Tucky Sports radio. Here at the ks R Golf scramble. Twenty teams playing here at Woodson Ben today should be fun. Hey, there's a deer. Look at those deer out there in the middle of the court.

00:22:54
Speaker 2: Why all wanted to see some Mario deer there? You go.

00:22:57
Speaker 3: Look at that out there and those I think that's the first deal. Can I tell you, there's never been anyone more excited about anything than Mario's seen windmills and corn for the first time. And now, dear, he had never seen a windmill, and he had never seen corn until our drive up there, and he got crazy excited about the corn and windmills. I've never I mean, I didn't think corn could be exciting for people, Drew, But he was excited about the corn and wind mill.

00:23:22
Speaker 1: That's usually a joke you make when you make that drive of at all the corn and windmills you see.

00:23:26
Speaker 5: You're telling me Mario actually had an appreciation.

00:23:28
Speaker 3: He was excited about it. He'd never seen it before.

00:23:31
Speaker 2: You know, I grew up in Indiana. I'm a I'm all in on the corn, but the windmills, you see it for the first time is quite a sight to see because so flat, you just go on forever and ever and ever up.

00:23:40
Speaker 3: There, one person writes Matt, the reason we're better at run blocking is it's the stoop's mentality hit him in the face and move, whereas it takes more athleticism with the pass blocking and quick feet. That's probably right, honestly makes sense.

00:23:54
Speaker 1: I loved another player that stepped up as Marcus Cox, the five point one we improved on.

00:23:58
Speaker 3: It's better, he's better.

00:24:00
Speaker 2: I want a lot of that. Demmy and Willcock deserve a lot of credit to because they were getting a lot of yards after they took the a lot attack.

00:24:07
Speaker 3: I'd be interested to see how many yards after the hit they had because they they took a lot of the Really, it reminded me of a Benny a little bit, the way he would sort of take those hits and go uh.

00:24:19
Speaker 5: Demmy had that spin move I didn't know he had.

00:24:21
Speaker 3: That's true. Cuts back spin move was nice. Now good, all right, So let me ask you before we get the phones. How do you feel going forward like, Okay, we're gonna beat let's say we beat Ohio, we're gonna be two and two. Do you feel like when we go to Old Miss we have a.

00:24:36
Speaker 2: Shot I'm back on board after Saturday. Okay, really, I don't know if they can beat Old Miss down there, but they're gonna beat at Florida, Auburn, and Home those others falling apart.

00:24:47
Speaker 3: Auburn's not good, Andy loses to Georgia State. The path to six wins is now completely lined up. Then you have but then you have Louisville and the top four out of five teams in America. So that's what you got, or three out of four teams in America.

00:25:03
Speaker 1: The offense still has the ways to go, need to get guys healthy. But the defense that showed up Saturday, they'll be able to play with just about anyone.

00:25:11
Speaker 3: We're gonna beat one of Nexas and Tennessee. Look, we're gonna beat one of those teams. And I think I'm saying Old Miss it's at eleven am. It's eleven am.

00:25:21
Speaker 5: They haven't played anyone yet.

00:25:22
Speaker 3: You know, I'm not gonna like, don't put me online saying it because I don't want to listen to the fans those but I.

00:25:29
Speaker 4: Kind of we're gonna steal one.

00:25:32
Speaker 3: It's hard for me to see us steal in Texas or Tennessee. So I feel like if we're gonna steal one old misses.

00:25:40
Speaker 1: You know, we didn't get any votes in the top twenty five, but we made an impact because we pulled Georgia downs.

00:25:45
Speaker 3: George is the first number one team, Uh what is it the first night? There's some stat they're the first one in like twenty years to win a road conference game and then go down, go down, and uh, and that was because of the way we play.

00:25:58
Speaker 2: We gotta find a way to get ball on the end zone. I mean, eight quarters of the sec we still have not start.

00:26:03
Speaker 3: That's not good. That's not good. By the way, do you feel like you can judge Brock yet? I still don't. I still don't know. I mean I love his toughness and I love how he runs. I still don't feel like I know how good he is because I still don't know that he gets a chance.

00:26:17
Speaker 1: You know, Yeah, I have some concerns, some concerns and criticisms, but it's been a small sample size. I mean, he seems to lose his composure pretty quickly, and one to think turned. But at the same time, if you saw what South Carolina was doing and then you're playing against number one Georgia, it's hard to say that's just definitively what he is, because there's.

00:26:33
Speaker 3: A tough kid though. I mean, I mean, he got that one first down where he dove head first and I went ah, But he got it and we needed it on the play the third and long.

00:26:43
Speaker 2: You know, I think he played better than maybe you've expect because they were plans for bring Wimpson in. I mean, they thought they were gonna play Whimpson. He didn't play at all because I think of what Vandy Griff was able to do on Saturday.

00:26:53
Speaker 3: We just have to get better at protecting. Luckily, we won't see a defensive line like those we've seen until Tennessee and Tech, so hopefully he will have a chance to get better.

00:27:03
Speaker 4: All right, who's up first?

00:27:04
Speaker 3: Ten? Preacher, Preacher, how are you hey?

00:27:08
Speaker 7: I'm doing good today. I've got a compliment and a criticism that I haven't heard yet. Okay, compliment is I thought they showed up.

00:27:16
Speaker 3: I'm very proud.

00:27:17
Speaker 7: Like you said, I thought there was a chance they maybe lay down and ride receivers. I give them credit. That don't get much attention. A week before it's gonna be hard to come out and be motivated.

00:27:27
Speaker 8: But they seem to.

00:27:29
Speaker 7: Show up and even lack of targets, they still do their job. But my criticism, can we catch a punt? We just looked bounce and bounce, We looked seriously before we drove.

00:27:43
Speaker 3: Well, I think that last punt. Yeah, that last punt, though, Preacher, I think was a shank. I think we got We got unlucky on that Georgia punt you're talking about. I think he shanked it and then it just took a great bounce and rolled. But in general, you're right, but I think that last one was a little bit unlucky on our part.

00:28:02
Speaker 7: That just hidden yards in the ball game. And you know we're talking about going on fourth and eight from the fifty. You know, if the catch the punt that's fifteen yards were down with a thirty five, then we could punt it.

00:28:13
Speaker 3: Or you're exactly right, You're exactly right. I appreciate the call. Alex Rayner, by the way, does he break the KSR curse? Comes on our show Friday and then nails four, including an all time record for longest one in school history. Alex, I was one hundred percent confident if we got that first down and we were fifty five in Drew. I was like, he's gonna make it. I had I thought for I said, if we give him a shot, he.

00:28:38
Speaker 4: Will make it.

00:28:39
Speaker 1: I was hoping he'd get that chance. He's from the state of Georgia and already said already had a great game. He was the first kicker in school history to hit two over fifty in addition to having the longest ever. So I wanted him to get one more opportunity, and I was gonna have faith and pretty closest to anything, I mean, within reason, not sixty.

00:28:56
Speaker 5: But if you had him even at fifty, I was y.

00:28:58
Speaker 3: He wasn't just making him. He was split in the uprights like he was. I felt good if we gave him a shot.

00:29:04
Speaker 2: Let's put we gotta pull back the curtain for just a second. Max told us that if they get a long field goal like that, they may go with the other guy.

00:29:12
Speaker 4: And yet I ain't gonna do that. Now.

00:29:14
Speaker 2: Alex was on the show on Friday and you flat out asking him how long?

00:29:17
Speaker 3: So let me ask you a question, because I can't remember. Did he tell me that about having more leg on the air or off the air?

00:29:23
Speaker 5: I think on the air.

00:29:24
Speaker 3: We said what did you Did he say that on the air? Yeah, because I asked him, I said, do you have more leg than we've seen? And he said yes with a confidence. I couldn't remember if he said that on the air.

00:29:35
Speaker 5: Off he said, I'll make whatever they need me to mat Yeah.

00:29:38
Speaker 2: Yeah, That's why it's really interesting how we thought maybe this other guy was gonna be the long field goal guy. And the way you talk to him on the air on Friday, he felt like he was confident and Stoops.

00:29:47
Speaker 3: Gave him a fifty five yarder. I mean, Stoops doesn't let guys kick that length usually, and he gave it to him early in the game.

00:29:55
Speaker 1: Wouldn't want to give Georgia the ball at that spot if he misses this up. Showed a lot of confidence in him. And that one, that one in the air, I thought, we have to get a little gusta win behind this. That one barely got over. It got over school record, school record. It's next, Trevor, Trevor, go ahead, Trevor.

00:30:14
Speaker 8: Ain't man, how you doing today? I I want to start this call off by saying I love the unsportsman line call on the first play of the game, So that set the tone and the defense came out and took care of business.

00:30:30
Speaker 3: I like that. I like that what happened we weren't at the place we were going. Yet what happened on that I didn't see. Did we get an unsportsman line?

00:30:38
Speaker 2: I don't remember what it was.

00:30:40
Speaker 8: We just we just got a little chippy, took it to the line, got a little chippy, and and that's what needed to happen to be in that game. In my opinion, is we just set the tone from the jump, gotcha and we did. Second of all, if you if you watched the coverage Georgia was in all game, the middle of the field was wide open and I was just free for Willie Rodriguez on the let.

00:31:03
Speaker 4: Me tell you something, Yeah, it was driving me insane.

00:31:09
Speaker 3: I appreciate the call. If you, I don't know if you've seen this video. It's on social media, but you need to find it. On our last drive before the fourth, it was our second down, the second and eight. We've talked about part of the reason. Maybe you make the case that Bush had a good call. Go look at that second and eighth. There's a video from the quarterback's perspective and Brock gets the ball and if he had one millisecond more time, Fred Ferrier was not only open, he might have scored a touchdown. Did you see you know what I'm talking about that If you go back, he's cutting across the middle, his guy does not go with him. He's looking the other way, and and Brock sees him, and he throws it and at the last second, a big guy who's beating his man tips it and that was the second down. If he has a millisecond more, if you look at the video from the quarterback's perspective, Ferrier either scores or like gets inside the ten yard line. Drew I was sick after, but when I saw that video, I was really sick.

00:32:15
Speaker 4: Like a millisecond more and he gets it.

00:32:18
Speaker 3: Yeah.

00:32:18
Speaker 5: I don't want to pile on my guy, Marcus Cox.

00:32:20
Speaker 1: But against a great player, it happens. And vander Griff was back pedaling, trying to give himself a second to get that ball off.

00:32:28
Speaker 5: Oh a fraction. I mean, there wasn't really a safety back there.

00:32:31
Speaker 3: There was no one there that catch.

00:32:33
Speaker 1: He's turning the corner and it's if not all the way gone, it's a big explosive.

00:32:37
Speaker 3: If you're looking at it from the quarterback's point of view. All of the defenders are on the right side, and Ferrier has the whole left side to himself. Ryan, it would have been one of those historic plays, and it was tapped barely at the last second.

00:32:53
Speaker 2: The offensive coordinators they like to keep one play in their pocket that they see they think may they may need late in the game. I wonder if that was it. I wonder that.

00:33:00
Speaker 3: So there is a part where we said, well, they should have run it on second down. The second down play worked if Marcus Cox gets that block and Brock has to complete the pass. But it's a short pass. It's only like a six or eight yard pass.

00:33:13
Speaker 1: But yeah, I mean, but it just shows I mean, they just haven't gotten enough time on Brock dropping back to pull those plays off, which is really holding the offense back right now.

00:33:21
Speaker 3: You gotta find that video. It'll might make you sick as you watch it. Scoring tds or tutties, we could use them. We could use at least one. We have none in our first two days two games, but we'll probably score one against Ohio. And if you want to do that with better score one against Ohio. You can go to DraftKings Sportsbook Official sports betting partner of the NFL. You can place your NFL or college football touchdown bet. There were a lot of them yesterday. 00:34:14
Speaker 4: Work.

00:34:15
Speaker 3: I'm back. It is Kentucky sports radio. There's people still going at me about that interception. Listen, I wanted it to be an interception. I just don't think it was because I think if it doesn't hit the ground, then he caught it. So like it's either it either hits the ground or he caught it. There's no point. I see him juggling it. And if he's not juggling it, like remember, I think he actually catches it. A little bit. Then I think the ball kind of hits the ground and comes out, but I think his elbow is down. I think the most likely call that probably should have been is a catch, and then the ground knocks the ball out, which in the NFL that's not a catch, but in college, I actually think it is a catch. But either way, I don't think there's a scenario Drew where we get the pick six.

00:35:03
Speaker 1: I can't remember a time where we've had that excitement ripped around, ripped away from us like that. I mean Dane's touchdout an old miss couple of years it comes to mind, but I mean that was something special that got pulled away. That one's gonna sting for a while.

00:35:15
Speaker 4: I'll we'll talk more about this later.

00:35:18
Speaker 3: But we are at like one of the heads of ESPN Radio's house and we're watching Mario and I are watching it like at this point, they hadn't invited us into the house. We were outside the house, but he has a television with four screens, and everybody else is partying, and Mario and I are watching it through the window of his house, and we see that play and I kind of forgot where I was for a minute. And I'm in like a sports coat and pants and I start, I run, I run away and scream, and the entire party turns around and looks at me, and he's jumping up and down, and I'm jumping up and down, and everybody's going, what's happening? And then then they throw on the f they say it's incomplet well nothing.

00:36:01
Speaker 4: Actually, it was just me going nuts.

00:36:03
Speaker 3: I completely you know, for a man my age, I completely lost my I went nuts during that play.

00:36:10
Speaker 5: I don't think you were alone.

00:36:12
Speaker 1: It was pretty cool that he was running towards the student section too, because they were losing.

00:36:16
Speaker 3: Yeah.

00:36:16
Speaker 1: Also I got a shout out the student section. There's been years. Yeah, not their best effort. That thing was full like forty five minutes before kickoff and they were routy the whole time. So I know some tickets got sold to red and maybe the top right corner of the stadium wasn't full. But whatever, this new class of students, they were into some football on it.

00:36:35
Speaker 2: I'm to share. Tom Leech has thought about that interception, and he was a good point. He said, whipped the ball went down the way it popped up in the air, you almost think a hand had to be under it, and when he hit the ground.

00:36:48
Speaker 3: Up, I took the opposite view, which is the way it popped up. It had to have hit the ground. But you know, I mean, I don't know. I think the best argument for call an interception is there wasn't enough grounds to overturn it. I think when you watch it on tape, it's hard to call it an interception. But I also think the argument of it's not one hundred percent clear, it's not a terrible but either way, it still would have been we deserved a break like that, Yeah.

00:37:18
Speaker 4: And it just didn't happen. Who's up next? Bill, Bill, go ahead, Bill.

00:37:25
Speaker 5: Okay, let's try Craig.

00:37:28
Speaker 3: Craig, go ahead, Craig. Hey, guys, it's a great atmosphere.

00:37:34
Speaker 7: You can't ask for better special teams defenses than unbelievable.

00:37:38
Speaker 4: But you gotta sense the.

00:37:40
Speaker 3: Moment and it's expectations. You gotta go for that.

00:37:43
Speaker 2: The crowd into it, got ready to go.

00:37:46
Speaker 3: I mean, it's too RGIU when you're gonna get another chance like this, and you've got to realize that your defense, as good as it is, they're they're worn out.

00:37:55
Speaker 1: And it was the same thing as South Carolina.

00:37:57
Speaker 2: They played tally good.

00:37:58
Speaker 5: Defense against South Carolina.

00:37:59
Speaker 1: They just on the field all day, and you gotta recognize that moment and you gotta go for it.

00:38:05
Speaker 4: We gotta go for it.

00:38:06
Speaker 3: Bottom line, let's take Nick Rouse's stats as being correct. I have no reason to think they're not. We're three for eight on passes going over eight yards, and we've had two runs for first downs oh more than eight yards with a scramble. So I think we got a forty chance maybe of completing this. You give me a forty percent chance at home to beat the number one team in America. I'm going for it every single time.

00:38:33
Speaker 2: Yeah, you can't give the ball back to them and let them have a chance to run the clock out. I think you have to go.

00:38:37
Speaker 3: And remember if you get it, then we're let's say the forty that we will have the ball.

00:38:44
Speaker 5: We are a few.

00:38:45
Speaker 3: Yards from field goal range two or three. They're gonna use all of their timeouts. They have not shown to have an explosive passing game in the thing. They're gonna use all their timeouts, and if you get another first you've won the game. Yeah, that's that's the I mean, you just true you have to go for it there, I feel.

00:39:08
Speaker 1: Like, yeah, I mean, I'm going for it with a five percent chance. You just don't get to the ball with the Georgia and let them be in control. And it's the number one team. If it's any other team on the schedule, I'll hear you out a little bit. But you're playing the number one team that's won forty one consecutive games. You gotta take some chances.

00:39:25
Speaker 3: I agree with you. You tell me before the game I get one play, fourth and eight to beat George. Wouldn't we all have signed up for that? Of course, every single.

00:39:38
Speaker 4: One of us would have signed up for it. You had it, you have to go.

00:39:42
Speaker 2: You have to take it. You have to take that chance.

00:39:44
Speaker 4: Who's next, Brandon? Go ahead, Brandon?

00:39:48
Speaker 9: Hey, guys, A big fan. I think the game Saturday brought back a lot of hope to the fan base that may have been completely gone after the game Saturday, more in the loss than I believe normal. Yeah, I agree, I think that we can get to seven wins, but that Ole Miss game is the big kicker on that one. My question to you guys is what what happen to Stoops if he missed a Bowl game, or had six wins and only lost the Bowl game.

00:40:17
Speaker 3: Yeah, nothing's gonna happen to him unless he wants to Unless he wants to do it. I mean, I'm you know, I'll probably get asked some version of this question thirty fifty hundred times on this show over the next two months, and it's gonna be the same answer. Absence some crazy thing happening. He will not get fired. He will only not be the coach here if he doesn't want to be, which I think is a decent chance. I think if you win six games, they wouldn't even be a discussion. Seven games wouldn't be a discussion. Five there's gonna be a lot of unrest with the fans, and that's an issue. But because of what he's done here, because of his contract, because of how he and mitched, there is not a scenario that I could see where he would be fired. Now, if they won three, then let's talk about it. But even then, even then, I'd be surprised. To be honest with you, Okay, thank you appreciate it. Do you agree with that?

00:41:17
Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean he's earned the right to climb out of this whole. Heck, we said the same thing about cal he's earned the right to get out of the mess. I agree, and it did another first round loss, so I think, and I thought even before losing South Carolina, we're getting near the stoops there. Anyway, it's been twelve years. We know the family history. I think you look at the end of this year, he might consider it. Heck, right now, we're projected to play Iowa in a bowl game. One of the beats Iowa.

00:41:38
Speaker 4: If we have to play Iowan a bowl game.

00:41:39
Speaker 5: Music City Bowl. That's the new projection.

00:41:42
Speaker 3: We cannot play Iowa anymore in these games. All right, when we come back, we'll talk more about the game. I want to tell you about, uh my bizarre Saturday night in Milwaukee and being in Green Bay and we're here in Somerset. Sponsored by Don Franklin. This is KSR.
