The First 3D Thermal Map of Interstellar Space

Bedtime Astronomy

Astronomers have created the first 3D thermal map of the interstellar space around our solar system, revealing a far more dynamic environment than expected. Instead of existing only as hot or cold gas, much of the material lies in a turbulent transitional state, constantly cycling between phases. Surprisingly, while the space between stars is chaotic, the interstellar clouds themselves remain remarkably calm. Built with the new 3D mapping tool, this discovery offers an entirely new view of our galactic neighborhood.
