You'll go be bad. It's the Internet. You're busy. Let's do this for November fifteenth, twenty twenty three. For the next hour or so, let me help you sort through the world of gaming on Game Mest Mornings Live with Me Jeff grub Today, reviews are in for Nintendo's next big game, and we have the October sales results from the United States. But first, please join me and welcome you. Today's co host the Game Best Mornings. It's Sean Herbo Shan McDowell. Sean, how are you doing. I'm doing good. How are you doing this morning? Jeff, I'm getting there. I'm okay. Wednesdays are a weird one because only one kid goes to school, so I've been walking in the morning, but I feel bad. I can't like I'll just let Steph work and take care of the kid at the same time when I can come home and help with that. So I don't do my walks on Wednesday morning. So now it's beginning to throw me off because I'm really enjoying that. Yeah for the routine though in it, yeah, part of the routines. So yeah, it's like, okay, what else can I do here? To kind of get the hang of things, and then I'm like, I'll work out, and then I just didn't do that. I played I played Recivil four and I helped Addie play some Peaku Niku, which is a game. She's still there. That's a good morning right now. Yeah, if anyone's got any Peakunku merch or any like, point me to some Peakunico merch. I've been told that that's what she wants for Christmas, are some peak It's little red balls with legs and black meapyies. That's a big thing with the leaves is they have black Oh I see, yeah, a little lobster eyes. Got a little lobster eye, Yeah for sure. I don't know. But how about you getting through this week? All right? Yeah? Busy as I usually look at him, No, dude, no time to play anything. The games they just keep coming, they don't stop coming, they don't. Yeah, you know, been finishing up Mario Wonder. I mentioned to you the R day. I'm not quite there yet. I'm at the the end. I got the I think I'm at the end. I got the final Wonder seed, so probably gonna wrap that up soon. Checking out a bunch of our stuff, you know, I've fired up Star Ocean to check that out. That has a pretty game, Jeff. Yes, well, I'm not like a especially from that time period of GRPG guy, but I like looking at that game a whole bunch. I think they did a really good job with updating the visuals for that. Yeah, and then playing some MW three getting ready for a certain song we got later in the week. You know that's right, yep, looking forward to that. I need to I haven't installed now. I need to just scoot it up, make sure I'm good to go and have all the micro transactions purchase that I need to purchase. We'll get that taken care of it. We're doing that pink shirt. You got pink shirt? Jeff? Yeah, I could probably dress up in the in a themed way for sure. Yeah, okay, you think you think Backlar has got pink shirt. I think he's got almost nothing but pink shirts. Everything he wears is just a that's a work for shoot facade, Yes, the facade. Yes, he's shoot pink for sure. All right, let's explain what we do here most weekdays. I Jeff Grebb, will help piece your gaming life back together. That includes breaking news and maybe even some of our own original report for all these topics, I'll get the input of a bona fide expert who will make me look smart. If you were watching live on twitch welcome. You can always listen to the show later on podcast feeds by searching for Game Mess Mornings, or find the RSS on giant bomb dot com. You can also catch the show later with chapters and timestamps on YouTube. Hello YouTube. All right, we have a lot to get into, so let's start the Morning Mess with Super Mario RPG review roundup. Kind of can't even say that name anymore without wanting to sing the song Mario Sam It's got an eighty three on Metacritic. That could have changed since I did this, but right now, yeah, eighty three on Metacritic. GameSpot gave it an a out of ten steven petit wrights. In fact, it's misleading to refer to Super Mario RPG as a remake, especially in the year where numerous remix such as Resident Evil four and Dead Space have retooled beloved classics for modern sensibilities. Heck, I'd even say Super Mario RPG is closer to Metroid Prime remastered. Yes, the graphics here were fully remade. This isn't a touch up. It's a complete glow up for contemporary contemporary eyes. But everything that gave the Super Nintendo game its identity is present. Outside of a few minor quality of life improvements, super Mario RPG is mostly a remastered product of its time, and an utterly fascinating one at that. With its heartfelt humor, standout personalities, satisfyingly straightforward combat, and an expeditious mindset devoid of the bloat that regularly plagues modern RPGs, super Mario RPG is timeless. I was kind of expecting exactly this. I think we kind of get weird with the remakes and remasters all the time, and I think what was with Crisis Core one of these remakes recently, was like, oh it's a remake. It's like, ah, they just kind of swapped out the graphics. Senate's still that game. And I'm like, that's that's what they did here, and that's what I was expecting, And I'm okay with that as someone who plays Super MARIRPG like once a year, how about you, right? I mean, this is what we used to refer to as a remake. Yes, it was literally, Yes, You're right, the game. You just remade it again and it looks better. Maybe it has some trolls different, maybe you have some quality of life changes, but otherwise, this is what a remake has always been. And then you know f F seven remake and stuff similar to that, which are reimaginings more than remakes, or it took that Moniker, and yeah, this is what people should expect of a remake. And I'm I'm happy because it's just a more modern way of playing the game. It's more accessible, especially since you know, god knows they're not putting that old one on MSL any terms soon. So yeah, I think this is great and I'm looking I'm looking forward to playing it this way. I definitely wanted to check out the original before going into this, but, like I mentioned, a million games this year, just no damn time. So I'm excited to just hop into this one right away at the end of the week. Yes, Sam, I've been waiting for this one. I love this game. I think it looks really good. It's not one of those ones where like Links Awakening so close to my heart, it's like any little change there, and I think those graphics did change up the tone a little bit of links Awakening came around on it eventually, and I'm like, you know what, it is still kind of in that same vein mostly, and sure it's not quite as eerie as the Game Boy One was, but whatever, I'm really happy with the links Awake in the remake here. It's just like that looks like that game updated and that's it. Now. There are some changes in terms of character models, but for the most part, it feels just kind of updated, and if the rest of it is just Super Mario RPG, I'm gonna be very happy with it. Siliconara gave it a nine out of ten. Brent Kepp said Super Mario RPG breeze new life into an SNS classic, allowing players to re experience what a Mario's most unique and adventurous titles on the switch, and then Inverse gave it a seven out of ten. Hayes Mattson said Nintendo's newly released remake is more of a one to one remaster than a true remake. There's nothing inherently wrong with this new version of Super Mario RPG, but some of the game's design flaws and problems are more apparent. While the brilliance of the original still shines through. I continuously found myself wishing more was changed and reimagined the things that I was kind of hoping would get reamed, like the timing of the like the combat. That's the stuff that does sound like they did improve here, So I think, again, I'm probably gonna be most wacky in the original. I mentioned I never played theer is so far, it's they did that. That's the one that really came out with that Hey timed button presses during your attacks, and in the Super Nintendo one, they didn't do a lot to convey when exactly that timing should happen, and even when you get it right, the feedback was like, well, god, I don't even know why that was correct. And so I think they're doing a lot more here to improve that, although I'll see for myself here later this week, and maybe it's not as good as they were purporting it to be. So yeah, and then you know, there are some other changes where if you do get the timing perfect or whatever, it hits all the enemies things like that. Yeah, it's pretty cool. So it's not quite as clear as it was in later games like Paper Mario Martin Lewis, Yes, yes, exactly. It was just I think it came down to they were really limited on how much animation they could put in a game like that. Back on the Super Nintendo. That cartridge was already super big in terms of the amount of space they had to store that game on. They probably ran out of space for extra animations to uh to inform the player when that was the right time to attack. So yeah, go ahead, please before we move on from a Super Mario RPG, I did put a link in the chat that when Jeff is done talking to the Gimmicks, I would think he would appreciate checking out. But uh, yeah, I don't know. Like the the comments about this being a one to one remaster and comparing it to a Metroid Prime remaster, I find that interesting because in my head, a neither of those are remasters, because in my head, remasters like I still think of like Final Fancy ten ten two on the PS four. Yeah, it's like it's basically an emulated PS two game with update textures, like it's a port. It is a remastering. But yeah, that's that's why I think of why I think of a remaster nowadays, just because that term has been so changed. I know we'll see. Yep. Well, I think as much as I have to play, I'm just so I've been looking forward to this so much. I will be putting a few things aside to get right in there and see it myself, and then yeah, I'm not like when you're playing the game, these definitions of remaster remake sort of fade in the background when you're purchasing a game. I see why. They become front of min front of mind. You're like, hey, this is a sixty dollars game. What am I getting here? Is this something that they really it is the same content effectively exactly by paying for the graphics kind of. I think the good news for anyone who hasn't played it before. The content is very good. The characters are very sweet. There's a lot of great characterization. You're gonna the relationship between Peach and Bowser and Mario is really well explored here. There's just a ton of fun stuff. So yeah, really looking forward to it. Check out this link real quick. I put here in the text chat for this channel. I think you appreciate this. All right, Let's see here. Is there anything in that text chat that will be bad if it gets seen on stream. No, because I know you keep leaking that. No, your goofs exactly. All right, let's see here here's the whole Mario RPG pamphlet ad that's available around Japan. Yeah, man, this is this is cool stuff. Yeah, I wish we had this. Yeah, so what this is? Everybody is, Oh, that's raspberry. Maddie posted this on Twitter. She lives over in Japan, and they recreated the original manual for the Supernintendo game is what that is? And that's now like a pamphlet that you can get around Japan in various stores, you know, like back in the day we used to get you know, like you go to Walmart, Kmart or whatever, you get that little pamphlet that's like, here's what the GameCube is all about, Here's what the game Boy Advance is all about. They basically did one of these, but it's just the manual again, and I think that's really cool since games don't really come with manuals anymore. Yep, definitely, I think, yeah, I look at that. It just happened recently. I think Steph opened up a game and that I had physically and there was like nothing inside she said, what the hell is this? Why is there like the wor's the manual? I'm like, yep, that's changed. If you scroll down like two tweets, you can see a direct one to one comparison to the original for the video. Oh that's really cool. Yeah it is God, I love that man SUPERPGS. It's so cool. Can't wait for everybody to meet Gino and Mallow. Those those are the real homies and this game will definitely make your fall in love with both those characters. All right, let's see here we have the October twenty twenty three Sircana Gaming sales report. This is from Matt Piscatella, who works at Sircana, and he posted all this on Twitter. For the October twenty twenty three US video game market highlights from Sircana. US consumer spending on video game content, hardware, and accessories fell five percent versus last year to four billion dollars. Declines were experienced across all categories of spending. The dip was partially driven by Call of Duty shifting release months. Obviously, it came out in October last year and shifted into this November time frame this year. Overall, though, it seems like October pretty strong new game releases for the month's see Spider Man two was number one, Super Mario Brothers Wonder was number two, that doesn't include digital sales though, and Assassin's Creed Mirage was number three. Then you have the perennial hits of Madden a FIFA now called Football Club twenty or twenty twenty four and Mortal Kombat one taking up the four, fourth, fifth, and sixth spot, and then UFC five and NHL twenty four and Sonic Superstars rounding up the top nine, and those both all three of those are also new to the charts this month. Number twelve was middle Gear Solid Master Collection Volume one, and number seventeen Forts of Motorsport and number twenty Lords of the Fallen, And that doesn't include digital sales as well. That's you know, that's a big release month, so i'd maybe a little bit surprising it's not able to keep up with last year. But Call of Duty is just such a jugger, not in terms of sales. If it is in one month last year and not this year, that's going to be the ballgame right there. It's still the best selling game of our year, right yes, exactly, and it will be this year. Even though it's gonna have it's gonna slide compared to Call Duty last year, it still should be the number one best selling game in the United States this year. We do have the the best selling games of the year so far. Let's see here. Hogwarts Legacy is still number one, Zelda Tiers of the Kingdom number two without digital sales. Spider Man two immediately jumped to number four, right behind Madden and Mario. Wonder not on this list, but remember it does include digital. I think someone asked mapis could tell, and I think he said, it's like number twenty one. It's just outside of the top twenty, and it's gonna probably be in there pretty soon. And again no digital sales included there, and that game will sell for forever. Are you a little surprised that Wonder's not in the top twenty even without digital sales. I'm not super surprised at this if it's just physical, because a lot of people on the switch are a going all digital nowadays, so I think a good chunk of people probably picked that game up digitally. I think I look at Marvel Spider Man two immediately going into a fourth place. There I'm like, yeah, that checks out because the first one sold like Gangbusters right out the bat too. Yeah, so yeah, yeah, yeah, this all looks right to me. Spider Man like definitely PlayStation's best selling franchise over the last I mean, I think they said, like Spider the Original Spider Man and Miles Morales both like their top selling game ever, and now this game is their fastest selling, probably will surpass those eventually, just with them the amount of momentum it seems to have. Someone that Chad also pointed out, this is definitely going to be more of a hardcore gamer thing. But Mario Wonder was part of the voucher program too, so a lot people probably picked out that way. Yeah, that's I actually don't I'd assume that they count as a sale. Oh yeah, I wondered how reports Yeah, I wonder how like Nintendo reports that to sircana because you know, the digital the purchase is for this other product that doesn't necessarily qualify, don't they. I mean, they don't report the vouchers, I'd assume, so yeah, I'd assume it just counts as a sale at that point. Yeah, yeah, probably. All right, let's see here spinning on video game content in October felve four percent when compared to a year ago to three point six billion dollars. Growth in physcal console software, and mobile spending was offset by declines in other areas, particularly digital premium downloads, driven by the release state shift of Call of Duty. Marvel Spider Man two was the best selling game of October, instantly becoming the fourth best selling game of twenty twenty three year to date. Spider Man two also led all titles in physical software dollar sales during October. Launch month. Dollar sales of Marvel spider Man two exceeded those of spider Man twenty eighteen's Marvel's Spider Man by a double digit percentage. Part of that's got to be at seventy dollars compared to the sixty dollars for Spider Man on the PS four, but also I just think that this franchise is continuing to grow at the same time. For Nintendo Super Mario Brothers Wonder Debut is the number two best selling game of October. It currently ranks as the twenty first best selling game of twenty twenty three year to day. There it is, and he once again notes no digital sales there Nintendo does not share their digital sales with MPD with Sircana. Roadblocks was released on PlayStation platforms during October and ranked fourth across all titles on PlayStation five and US monthly active users according to Sircana's player Engagement track, trailing only Call of Duty, Modern Warfare two, Fortnite, and Marvel Spider Man two. That Modern Warfare two also that you have to use that client to play the Modern Warfare three beta, so that's gonna be up there for that reason as well, and war Zone and war Zone yes exactly. The Finals from Inmbark Studios held in open beta on Steam during October, helping the title rank fourth overall and Steam monthly active users in the US market. Only Counterstrike two, Balder's Gate three, and Cyberpunk twenty seventy seven were higher. Sean, I think this tip is interesting because the Finals is this game that's reminded me that we are not at a point. We're not just at a point where hey, a new game comes out and we pay attention to it for a little bit and then it slowly just takes over this whole other part of the world and it's like, oh my god, there's like a billion players for that thing, and I never even think about it. We're at a point now where's like the finals, I'm not even thinking about this game at all, and it seems like it's doing that, and it seems like it could grow into one of those games without me ever even really giving it a chance. So this gaming's shifted so much from oh, you could play everything to now it's like these games can pop up and become their own mark, gets onto themselves out of nowhere, right, Yeah, I mean games in general are that way now. You look at something like you know, PUBG, where I know you were big into it, but like I was like, what the hell's a PUBG when that game came out, and then yeah, just blew up overnight. But there's also these games that I've never heard of that you are in the background, just silently having millions of users, if not concurrently, at least you know, in a given month, and it's just like, I've not heard of you, but I guess you're doing well because it's in different markets and everything like that. And Jan, no, we should not publish, Yes ever, yes we should, Jan, Oh, let's fucking go. Don't listen to Sean. You have power to stop me, you know, like boycott any of my future TND is not to a pubg one. Yeah. I would have said this to Sean last night. He's like, it's not already. You're like, like, hell, it isn't. Yes, exactly, chats with me and that might just be confirmation biased, but hey, what can we do about that? Absolutely nothing. Video game hardware spending fell twenty three percent when compared to a year ago to three hundred and twenty seven million dollars. All current generation consoles experienced a double digit percentage decline in dollar sales when compared to a year ago. I bet for the PlayStation and the Xbox. That's also got to be called duty related that right, Like people bought the console with Call of Duty last year see Xbox series ranked second dollar sales, while Switch was number two in units. You're to date hardware spending was six percent higher when compared to the to the same period in twenty twenty two, at four billion dollars. Sean Vamp about console hardware sales. Why I try to help this kid real quick. Console hardware sales. Yeah, because your day hardware is spending six percent higher compared to the previous period. I mean, I'd assume that's just because there's so many damn games coming out right now, like people are hopping on the train for the first time. Like, if you don't already have a console, there's never been a bad time to get a current console because there's so many games that are either not releasing on the previous gen or just are significantly better. Why would you not pick up, you know, a series ass or a PS five wherever you had your eye on for a while now. Yeah, and it's I think it's interesting that, Okay, we're seeing double digit a decline, but I expect that to bounce back during the holidays and in November. I think almost all these systems are going to have pretty good Black Friday deals. I think we've already seen the PS five is going to be discounted. I think Microsoft might have confirmed Xbox might be discounted. So yeah, people are going to get on these hard this hardware, especially the people that are in that second and third tier of I don't buy new consoles when I have to like fight other people to buy them online. And now it's like, oh, I'll get around to it when there's a game I want well, you know, as much as a call of duty is not great this year, there's still a lot of people who think are going to just pick up that system with that game and hopefully be able to get it at a discount because of all the deals that'll be happening for the holiday shopping. Yep, all right, let's see here. October twenty twenty three, accessory spending fell two percent when compared to a year ago, to one hundred and forty seven million dollars. The PS five Dual Sense wireless controller Midnight Black was the month's best selling accessory in consumer spending that has been up and down, but like always, accessory spending is a good sign of like how much people are like getting ready to engage with their games. And it falling two percent isn't some drastic thing. But it's been up most months for this year, so the first decline there again probably call of duty related. Yeah, okay, we're gonna take a quick break when we get back. We got a lot more news. I'm curious to hear Sean's opinion about that new Pokemon concierge and more. Maybe Jan can yell at us and chat about how he feels about it. We'll talk about all that right after this, and we're back and Netflix's Pokemon Concierge gets a new trailer and December release date. This is from Tom Ivan at VGC. Netflix announced a December twenty eighth release date for Pokemon Concierge. Revealed in February. Pokemon Concierge is a stop motion series produced by Dwarf Animation Studio, a French company that previously worked on Monsters at Work for Disney. I don't know what Monsters at Work is? Is that something I should have no idea either, Just I'm impressed that they worked for Disney. Yes. The series, which will be set at a Pokemon resort, tells the story of a concierge called Hau. Is that right? Yeah, you really emphasize it, but yeah, you know who works there. The show follows how To and her side duck friend as they greet the mini Pokemon who visit the resort as guests. I have you know, I'll play the trailer on mute while no no, no, no, no, no no no no Netflix trailer no, okay, fucking Netflix, even if it's just video, of course, if it's just video, all right, yeah, alright, then I'm just gonna flash it for seconds so people could see it. There you go, there's a Yeah, looks very pray. I think it looks very pretty. I don't know. Tell me about your feelings about a Pokemon Netflix Claymation show. I suppose Jeff. In any room I am in, outside of maybe the World Championships, I'm always the biggest Pokemon Pokemon pokemoniac. Yeah, I'm coffee hasn't kicked in yet. I'm always the biggest Pokemon fan of the room. That being said, I don't give a shit about most of these projects, man, I do kind of care about because I think it looks so cute, I know, and I think that's like what a lot of people are like attracted to is the art sound ear thing. It does look very interesting, like a Claymation ye sort of style, but done in three d uh. I do always watch the anime shorts that Pokemon puts out because they are always so good, like, oh god, I get the names mixed up. Path to the Peak was the TCG one, but they also did another one about Scarlett and Violet, and it's just like anytime these do these animated shorts, like I don't know if you saw like Pokemon origins back in the day on YouTube or anything like that, they're always okay, They're always just incredibly well produced, like this is what the TV show should be. This is you know, the kind of love and care we wan in the video games, YadA YadA. So I'm sure this will be great because that new one about Scarland is incredible. Again, I'm sorry I can't remember her name everybody, but look up on Pokemon YouTube channel you'll find it. It's like Paul Day and Wins, I think, is what it is. And it's just incredibly well i animated. It's not the best animation I've seen all year, and so I'm sure this will follow suit in then, and I'm sure it'll be like a charming little story. It'll probably make you tear up because they love doing that. They you know, like having the Ookemon go through some trials and tribulations. And yeah, I think from what I have seen, because I don't think I watched. Yeah, I watched the initial reveal trailer, but not this, I'm sure this will be good. Yeah. I for me, the appeal is other than the great look at the stop motion animation. It is a, Hey, I wanted to watch that Pokemon anime because Ash's journey came to an end. And I know I could have done like the short version of like watch the first season then watched the last season. It probably would have been mostly fine and maybe watch some highlights here and there. I will say on that real quick, Jeff, I can like give you an episode a number if you want. At some point watch there is a top eight tournament that ends that entire series. Watching that is worth it if you have a nostalgia for like ashcatch them, right, And I do. I do want to eventually watch that. But it's like and that's like ten that's only like ten episodes. It's totally doable, right, Like skip intronautro that takes like three hours, right, that's not But part of it's just the mental thing of like, oh man, I'm skipping all this stuff that I maybe I would care about it, And I know that's insane because much exactly no, I no, yes, But that's the appeal here, like oh no, there's no stakes. I could just hop into this. Okay, again, there's just a few episodes, and so the mental thing isn't there. Now, I know I'm gonna skip all that stuff when I actually too good around to watching those episodes of the Pokemon ash catch an anime. But here it's like, no, I can just turn this on a Netflix and not have to worry about any of that. Netflix also apparently, and I can't remember if they confirmed this or if this was like a rumor that seems mostly confirmed, has a live action anime. Oh what's up? I just got a d M from Dan record of him just holding a red delicious apple and you know, you know what, that's more. No, that was just a really funny thing to get in the Mole show. Go back to bed, Mike, go back to bed. It's all good. Anyways, what are you saying about a live action and I'm mostly working on a live action Pokemon show with the Pokemon Company. Do you think that's a company that could pull that off? Which one? Netflix? You think? Netflix? You know obviously they work with production. Yeah, all of their live action stuff has been flawless. Everyone loves death. No, stay the hell away from Pokemon. If it's if it's a live action remake of the ash Ketchum story, yes I don't do that. But if it's like this, where it's like, hey, you know, it's its own thing that could work right. Well, what they should have done is like they did the animated uh I mentioned Pats of the Peak was a TCG show and that was Q and nary thing. It was very like I would say, like Disney Channel, are the vibes sort of like the comedy and everything like that. What that could have been like a live action drama of like, you know, a kid trying to get better at the game or something like that, or like a kid trying and go to World championships for the video game. If they do that, that could be good. But yeah, I don't know. Just don't don't mix my Pokemon with your live action, please. I I hope if it's it's more like this instead of trying to do what they've done with all their other anime live action adaptations, that would or like even I wasn't a huge fan Detective Pikachu, so like even that I wouldn't be the best part about the Detective Pikachu is the real world just seem Pokemon do stuff in that world, and then anytime it was trying to be a story, it was pretty bad. Exactly. Yeah, So I don't know if they could capture that magic and then have a decent story or decent characters. I would probably be into it. Uh, all right, there's a wonder Woman job listing out there, and it's just the game. Maybe a live service game. This is from Prisculli and and VGC. A new job listing for the upcoming wonder Woman game suggest it may have a live service element. As spotted by WCCF Tech, the new job ad is for lead Software Engineer Gameplay at Monolith Productions and makes it clear that the role will involve working on the wonder Woman game. Join the wonder Woman team and help bring an iconic DC superhero to life. The listing reads well. The job requirements list a typical experience expected from an applicant looking to work on a triple A game. One of the qualities, and the nice to have section refers to live services. Specifically, the lining the listing says applicants may have the edge if they have experience helping maintain a live service software product or game. Although this doesn't conclusively confer that Wonder Woman will have a live service component. Were to do so, it wouldn't be a great surprise. After all, it would line up with the comments made last week by Warner Brothers Discovery CEO and Brain genius David Zaslov, who said the company was focused on turning its biggest gaming franchises into live service games. Yes, let's reiterate, this is not conclusive evidence of anything. No, people have needs for all kinds of skills for a whole bunch of reasons, and having someone who's good at maintaining live service products may help with some other DLC thing that they're thinking about, or very light touch live service stuff which can happen in all kinds of games. But this is one great sign, yes, exactly, And we do know Warner Brothers has this in mind. David Saslov did make a big deal about this and that earnings call, And despite being the company that put out Hogwarts Legacy and that being a great success without really a the live service stuff in there, they're also the company making Suicide Squad and that has leaned hard into live service. And wonder woman would have gotten the green light in that zone where live service was the obvious thing to do in the eyes of many of these executives. So what do you think the chances are that this is a you know games with enough live service that we refer to it as a live service game. I'm curious because I could see it going the route of like Mortal Kombat also WB games. So like if for whatever reason there's like a battle passive challenges in something where it doesn't really feel like even in single player content because you know MK obviously you can play online or thing, but there's also single player towers and stuff of challenges and things you can do. I wouldn't be surprised if they like shoehorned that in in some way, like hey, go over to the challenge mode and you know, beat it on hard mode and you'll get like something for it. Like I don't know, like you said, it's not conclusive of anything, just a job blessing and people reading a job blessing just way too much all the time. Yeah, as we know, especially from like Nintendo stuff and one like with the retro and everything, like people need to calm down. But because it's WB, I won'n't be surprised if yeah, there's it's probably still just a single player, you know, Batman style of game. But yeah, I don't think they're going the Row suicide squad. But if they do shove in some live service element. Yeah, one shock me. My Windows Cloud service thing just popped up with look back at your Memories for November fifteenth, and it's a screenshot of fifty cent Blood on the Sand running on my Steam deck from last year. Of course the best kinds of memories. Truly a beautiful thing. Yeah, we'll see. With Wonder Woman, I think when we don't have good details about a lot of these games, it's easy to fill in. You're filling those gaps with your anxieties about where gaming is heading in general. I think in this case it's fair to expect that. I just go like, how would that even make sense? And really, whenever we sort of fantasy book these things, it's always like, well, wonder Woman from what Warner Brothers, just make that an Arkham Night kind of game. It can Arkham Asylum game just with Wonder Woman, And doesn't that make perfect sense? And I think if you're someone who likes to make games and play games, yes, that makes sense. If you're someone who likes to make money from games, in their opinion, having live service and that infinite ceiling is always going to make more sense. In Fatalities, well, you can imagine a bunch of different costumes for wonder Woman. Oh that's a character that's been around for decades. Here's what seems wonder Woman, right, And it's well, are they going to sell those costumes? Will they be in battle passes? What does that even look like for a game like this, We have no idea. We'll have to find out. Uh what is like the best game that is primarily single player that you would still consider live service, uh like and I mean like traditional, like a traditional, big budget single player narrative game. Because for me, it's got to be hit Man because Hitman had the like constant updates and the elusive tomes and now they have that the the the contracts mode or whatever it's called. It's a game you can just play forever and they get endless content for it. I mean nowadays Pokemon basically is I guess that'll probably be my answer. Like there is a heavy multiplayer component of Pokemon, obviously, but like they constantly will you know, I get a news update on my the Switch news feed on the home screen, I'll just be like, hey, you can go do terror raid battle for a guard shop now for all weekend. You know, there's stuff like that, but him Man is probably like, yeah, the best one of those, whereas it's entirely I'm trying to think, have they put multiplayer in the new him Man games they had? They had they had co op multiplayer or like you know, side by side Ghost multiplayer hit Man two, and I don't, primarily, like you said, a single player game, and it does it very well because you can just be like, here's the new map, here's the new celebrity to assassinate, or where I had shoot. Yeah, they've had some crazy celebrities in there, like trying I think what was the big one in right, Oh, you can't be was it Nick Nlty or I was thinking wacky Action, Yeah, Joan Bean too. But there's someone else I can't Gary Busey. Gary Busey, Yes, I was mixing. I always mix up my Nick Nolties and my Gary Busey's. I mean who does of course, yeah, right next to each other. Yeah, insane actors that were in a million movies in the eighties and nineties. To be fair, that's both those guys. Yeah, uh, all right, like a dragon Infinite Wealth is the longest game in the series. This is from Johann Balstrom at Game Reactor when the developers described the game's length as Monster Class, you know it's going to take a lot of hours. That's exactly what like a dragon infinite wealth needs. According to Rio Gagotoku studio boss Masa Yoshi Yokayama, he describes it as a monster class game, longer than anything we've made so far, and that it's not something that could be played through in one or two all nighters. He says this in an interview with Japanese outlet game Watch, translated by Autobaton. He also sees challenges with this. This means that a lot of people are going to hesitate to play the game or will end up having to wait with it on their shelves. I found the possibility of that kind of outcome sad, so I thought we have to get everyone hyped up enough to play it. The solution, and especially the first sense, is something I did not expect to read, and again this is from the author of the story. We have to get people to play the game in about a week or a month, even at the cost of their health, which is why it's our dutious creators that generate enough to be excited about Okay, yeah, sure, this just feels like hype man hyping up his stuff a little bit, but kind of a wild thing to say, What the fuck are they thinking? What the fuck are they thinking? Why the fuck is Sega releasing two agy hour or pgs seven days aparsh and charging full price for them, already marketing them against each other? What the fuck is gone business to do? Whatever they want is a football two stor Yeah? So it works so well for time Fall too, are you talking about? They are literally doing this this week as well, because like a Dragon Guiden came out last week and Persona five Tactica is coming out in two days. Yeap? What the fuck is going on over there? How does this work? It doesn't work? And that's the brilliance about Sega is that they never expect things to actually work, so when it blows up in their faces like that, all according to plan. Uh listen, I'm I'm gonna play a little bit of Tactica. I'll see if it jives with me. But if I was going to play one of these three games, I'd be like, oh yeah, give me that one that was like five to ten hours long. That's a side story. Even if I'm going to be a little lost. That sounds better than having to play this this huge, huge thing. But also to get to the headlining topic here, of course it's the longest name of the series because up to this point, Yakaza was the beat them Ups, and then now we had an RPG recently, and so of course that made it longer, and they keep mind me of the follow up is, yeah, it's even moore packs with stuff. And with these like a Dragon games, it seems like they come up with new mini games and they don't like replace the old mini games. They keep all of those and they just keep adding more and more and more and having like more missions to do with those various mini games. So yeah, I bet there's gonna be a ton of content in there. And at the same time, I bet you'll be able to get through, like the main story relatively quickly. Still not obviously, maybe not two sittings, but I don't think that's going to be like, yeah, the last game was about fifty hours long, if you get Yeah, stories are long nowadays. Yeah, so that will be fucking miserable. Enjoy the rest of your show. Thank you appreciate it. They're very helpful, Like I said, you know you're gonna hear from experts, all right. Do you think developers get a benefit when they say, oh, this is the biggest one ever. That probably still has some effect on sales, some positive effect, right, as long as people aren't like completely tired of it. Yeah. Like, I think if Persona six gets announced and they're like, and it's even longer, a lot of us will be like, Bro one hundred and twine hours wasn't only on anymore in that, but a lot of people who are really into Persona also the flip side of me, I'm gonna go, can't I give me more Persona? Right? Oh? Yeah, I think that's probably where they're at right now with Yakazo. Thanks. If Assassin's Creed came out and said, our next one's the biggest one ever, I think I would be like, dude, Bro, Bro, chill please, we don't. Are we bad enough of that? That's okay? Yes, yes, Digital Bros. Is cutting thirty percent of its jobs from Ben Leona at Game Reactor. It doesn't feel like a day can go by without us giving a report on job cuts and layoffs in the games industry, and unfortunately, despite reporting on the Amazon game layoffs yesterday. Now we have layoffs from Digital Bros. To report on as well. Digital Bros develops, publishes, and distributes games such as puzzle Quest three, Gunfire, Reborn, and Miasma Chronicles. The Digital Pros Group has announced that as part of it cost cutting effort, the Publishers set to reduce its workforce by thirty percent, which will be the equivalent of around one hundred and the employees, with the predominant portion concentrated within the studios themselves. The company has stated that it doesn't expect these cost cutting measures to have a significant impact on the results for twenty twenty four fiscal year. It's the same story as always, Sean. These publishers aren't necessarily doing that much worse. They are just in a more precarious position when it comes to figuring out how the money is going to flow in and and and it's always been difficult to predict that, but now it's difficult and it's expensive to get capital. And that's a combination for these companies being very hesitant and scared, and they're like, well, what's the answer here. Let's cut jobs to increase our buffer between how much money we're making and how much we expect to make in the future. It's as always shitty that it's always just the people responsible for making all these good products that are going to get hurt, and in this case, it's the studios, the people working on some of these games, although Digit Bros. Works a lot with external studios like, oh, we'll publish it for you on all these different platforms, so I wonder exactly how that breaks down, but they did not give that information. This is going to continue like this for some time, right, almost assuredly. Yeah, it's just companies got too big, they sought their infinite growth or whatever like that. That's not necessarily what's happening here. But all these companies just expanded and then realized, oh wait, we can't back up this expansion, so what do we do. Labor is the easiest thing to cut because it's you know, a lot of money that we can say it there. So they just cut people. And you and I had a very long conversation about this different podcasts recently. But it just it's always sucks because you upend people's lives. And even if it's I'll be honest, i've never heard of Digital Bros. Before. It's I have heard the games that were mentioned here in the article, right, but it doesn't matter, like you are messing with people's livelihoods, especially again going into the holiday season. That's the biggest dick movie and possibly do if someone is saying, yep, screw your Christmas bonus, screw your you know, like any paid time that you might have had booked or anything like that, Like anything like this that might just straight up get cut, like yeah, kids don't get presents and crap like that. It sucks. I yeah, well, mar can we say at this point basically are then this all sucks? Right? And the Lexi points out Digital Brothers is mostly five O five, it's five O five's parent company, so yeah, okay, guys, right, And in five o five does exactly what I said where it's like they usually partner with studios that are looking to publish their game from like, oh, they put out themselves on Steam. If you want to put it out on consoles, we'll help you with that. We'll publish Control for you, Remedy, that sort of thing. I think they are working more closely with Remedy on Control two, right, And I think that might be the case, but we'll see how that plays out. Take two boss says games should be priced according to how much time you get out of them. This is a Marcus person at Game Reactor, entertainment should cost a lot of money. According to Take two CEO Straus' zelmic who, during a meeting with investors shared his views on the industry and where it might be heading in the near future. He mentioned how a lot of it is about the value customers feel they are getting out of a product, and that in the future, players should be charged by the hour. Zelnig said, in terms of pricing for any entertainment property, basically the algorithm is the value of the expected entertainment usage, which is to say that, man, how could you talk about stuff like this, which is to say that the per hour value times the number of expected hours plus the terminal value that's perceived by the customer if ownership of that title is actually owned, not say rented or subscribed to. And you'll see that that bears out in every kind of entertainment vehicle. By that standard, our frontline prices are still very very low because we offer many hours of engagement. That doesn't necessarily mean that the industry has pricing power or wants to have that pricing power. However, there is a great deal of value offered to me. This really just sounds like someone asking about the high price of games and how that fits into how people are feeling over all about high prices, and Strauss is un extent. Listen, we could be charging a lot more. Look how many hours people are getting down to Grand Theft Auto. And I don't really think his strategy here is like we're going to charge you a dollar per hour for that you play Grand Theft Auto. But the reason that that's not his arguments because that would be crazy, right, Yeah, and god this reeks of yeah, be lucky, we're not charging you more. That's exactly what it sounds like. Yeah, which just God, you're dumb. You are You are a very dumb man Strauss selling say that like this, No, people want shorter games. They don't want like there's so many things we could talk about here, but just keep it short. You know. This ties into the bloat issue we were just talking about, and it also comes into like games are expensive, as is, this is an expensive hobby on the whole, and just being you know, in that mentality of there could be more like find other ways to charge you. Another thing that just sucks here and it's coming down from the top, right, And straus Selnik should say the unspoken stuff here, which is like gaming unlike a lot of these other pieces of media and these other mediums, is that games have found a lot of other ways to charge money that movies and music haven't been able to. You can buy music, you could subscribe to music services, you can buy movies, you can subscribe to movie services. There is no post release recurrent consumer spending, as Strausniic likes to say about micro transactions. And you know this is take two. This is Rockstar right now, basically the kings of micro transactions and recurrent consumer spending. So, yeah, you could charge by the hour, but you're not gonna do that because you make a lot more money by having all these people come in at a relatively low price I suppose, and then getting them to spend all this money on all this extra stuff, and that's way more valuable to you. So this is like, yeah, you're saying this, but we know it's dishonest because you would never do it because it would conflict with your other way of making that real money that you've been making from Grand theft Aughder for the last ten years. Yeah, exactly, And that's the that's the kicker here. You Someone correct me if I'm wrong. I don't think this has changed. It just feels like it's changed because this he's been given away so many times. At this point, he still got a pay for GT five to play GT online, which is like, you know, a lot of time, they'll just get people coming out like ten dollars sales or whatever like that. That adds people coming out like fifty to sixty dollars as well still because they just like out, I just want to play a new GT, I'll just pay whatever you know Walmart has on the shelf for And boy, this is greedy. It's all so greedy. What I'm like, if I got charged to play games by the hour, first of all, I would quit this, Hoby. That'd be way too stressful for me. Yes, but I'm thinking man, Dan sat through an hour of just loading times for Sonic Go six because that video they just has Sonics campaign. Oh that was just Sonics campaign. That was just songs campaign. Yeah, holy fucking shit, I did not know that. That's insane. It was a fifty six minutes of loading times. Shouts to joy Us for editing together that video. It's just the loading times in Sonics and that was one hour. Oh boy, imagine you have to pay for that hour of loading times. That's just two shows how insane this is and would never ever happen exactly all right. CD project is working on a mod editor for the Witcher three Wild Hunt. This is from Tom Ivan. A VGC CD project has announced that it's working on an official mod editor for the Witcher three Wild Hunt. The mod editor, which is in development for the PC version game only, is expected to launch next year. We're thrilled to announce that we're working on a mod editor for the Witcher three Wild Hunt. CD Project. Red said it will allow you to create your own experiences in the game by making something completely new or editing existing quest and content. We're planning on releasing it for free in twenty twenty four. Uh So, was this used to be a pretty big thing with classic CRPGs, where the moddering tools would come out and people would just make their own campaigns. And I remember there was a job listing for someone working on like one of these RPGs that was in the lineage of like the original balder Skate or Iceland Dale and they're like, hey, you know, yeah, we're making modern games on Xbox three, sixty or whatever, but go back to this tool for I think it was balder Skate and create a campaign in there, and that is your resume, Like that is going to be what we actually judge who we're going to hire on. And oh, that's that's cool. And I think developers creating a space for more of that kind of creativity to happen and for people to tell their own stories in these games is a great way to keep something that's already had some of the longest legs in gaming history with the Witcher three and ensure that this game is going to be around for a very long time, to the point where even like Witch or four might come along and not necessarily replace this game. And in the way, like people still play Melee right right, and like you you address sounds on that I want to talk about where uh, just putting together a game like as a mod or like you know, something like that can be a great resume builder. Yes, I forget where it came from, but like someone in the industry was like, yeah, dude, we don't care where we went to school, Like show us your Skyrim mod you know like, and that will be impressive to us. We will like, you know, get you in the industry based on that, we will like bring you in for an interview, based on the fact that, okay, you can code, you can make this thing, like we we know that you have the skills there. Cool, this is a real world experience that we value over anything else. So yeah, but on the top topic, this is interesting because I know, I don't know when this would have happened by at least know that when I download Cyberpunk again. For Phantom Liberty, one of the options was to download the uh the mod red Tools. I think it was for like you know, a Red Engine tool editor, a mod creation helper. I'm trying to think of like what the terminology would because you can make mods for a game like just absolutely nothing. But yeah, they they released in some capacity, just tools that like help you with more in depth mods. And so I since uh, I believe Witcher three also runs on red Engine, I don't think that was just Okay, it wasn't just made for Firepunks, so I'd assume that this would be like back parting it or whatever. It's one of those things that they've kind of had floating around the background, and I think they did intend to have release these tools of a very long time ago, and so getting it ready for Cyberpunk probably helped them get it to a place where it's like, Okay, now that we've done that work, let's take it back to Witcher three. The Yeah, it's just it's just a helper. You know, you don't need this because obviously exactly easier. It's more democratized for people to like, yeah, learn and this probably already download certain mods for this game and everything like that, you could who could say? Who could that? Uh? That already four mod was not what I thought was going to be. By the way, Jeff, you think it was going to be even more? I know you And yeah, yeah, listen, I looked for that one. I couldn't find it. So that's the Lygason. Sure, God, I was gonna was gonna say something about this topic, but oh well, we'll move on here to the final story. Machine Gun Kelly wants to play link in the Zelda movie. I know this is your big machine gun Kelly Fan Turbo shan Us from Eddie McCoo, a Game Spot, Nintendo, and Sony have teamed up to produce a Legend of Zelda live action movie, and one of the biggest questions about the movie is who will play Link and Zelda. We still don't know, but now Machine Gun Kelly mg K himself has put his name into the mix for a link. Obviously these are this is this makes perfect sense because then Megan Fox is the perfect Zeldough we know how good she is with video game stuff. You're right, music to my ears. I cannot wait. You know how much I loved her in Mortal Kombat one. Uh yeah, to watch Arma Grub and everybody. It was a good time. I keep coming back to who would be good for these characters, and I'm not But Sean, I think I'm at a point where I like, I have no idea. I have zero idea about what would actually make for a good Link or even a Zelda, but especially link links are really tough not to crack. Yeah, I'll say that probably no matter what they're going to announce someone and I'm like, oh, I don't know if that's gonna work. And I'm always wrong about that. I remember, like a lot of the MCU casting in the early days, I was like, man, you're gonna you're gonna get Johnny Storm from the Fantastic four movie for Captain America. Good luck with that. That's gonna fuck it suck. And then of course I think he was really great. So Robert Dowds Junior one's last time he was in a movie, Yeah, exactly, Yeah, Mickey Rourke really and then okay, okay, Iron Man two's not great, but Mickey Rourke was great, isn't it. So it's a fun movie. I'm fine. I'm fine with it. Uh so, but yeah, so it's like, uh, we're not going to really know until we see it. And I suppose the same was true with like Chris Pratt as Mario in the movie, where it's like, I can predict that this is probably not gonna ruin the experience, and that's exactly what happened. But still I didn't truly believe that until I saw it myself. This is like make or break for this movie, though, right, They gotta get Link, right, Oh yeah, at the very least Link needs to speak, even if everyone else is miscast, Like you need that poster to be someone where people look at and they because like Zelda not Nintendo's highest selling franchise, even though it's doing a lot better with these new iterations. Huge. Yeah, people know who link is. You know, people play Smash, they know Nintendo stuff, they see the brand tattoos. Yeah, yeah, exactly. Like, Man, you you go a comic con, you can just like you know, throw a pebble and hit someone with a Triforce S tattoo. You know, like people know what to look for in a link, and so, yeah, you're right, that is the most important thing to get out of this. I don't It doesn't help that I just don't care about this project, Like this is almost as surely gonna be mediocre. Yes, Jan, wait wait, Galaxy Brain thinking Sony, and they'll get ready to cut the check. The first thing they need to cast this link is James Gerald Hicks. Who is this gentleman? You ask who's this gentleman? He plays Dane? Who's Dane? Who's Dane? Quiet? Man, Oh my goodness, really says anything. Dane already has experience. You're broken, Jan, You're broken, all right? Hang on, no, hang on though, this is genius. I like this thing, like where he's at here? Oh my god, the check actually check this is not back. Look at this guy. This is not bad. All right, we'll see if that happens. In the meantime that we have a pull question from Monday, let's get to that. Uh. Now that reviews are out, how do you feel about the PlayStation portal? Four percent say they're getting one, of five percent say I'm probably getting one, of fifty percent say I'm probably not getting one, and seventy six percent say just straight up not getting one. I voted for I'm getting one because I am going to try to track one down. We'll see. And you're too lazy, just set up remote plans something else, which is all this thing does. Jes yes, exactly. Well, okay, here's the thing. I've had bad experiences with my razor Keishi's breaking. I don't necessarily like playing on phones anyhow, even though I do have phones sitting around that would probably be fine and I can kind of permanently keep it eye it just I don't like my stuff feeling even a little bit wobbly. That was a big problem with like the real break. I break stuff a lot, I think, but my hair gets to the stuff. I don't know what it is, but my stuff breaks a lot. And like the early days of the switch, when the joy cons would feel like they could just come off without pressing the button, it made that system so much more uncomfortable to use for me, and I don't like that overall that I want sturdiness in the thing that I'm holding. You have a Roger ally just sitting around that you hate, You could just dedicate that to remote play. I did do that on there, you know, maybe maybe you know be the reality is that actually the Wi Fi experience isn't as fun to stream over as I I'm also gonna say, Jeff, if you had any trouble setting it up on your network with these existing devices, the portal probably doesn't go away to either. I'm not gonna help you. Probably out. I'm absolutely trying to talk you out the legend. No, all right, that's you're crazy. It's okay, I'm used to it. That's right. Yes, you've had to deal with it for a long time. Now, all right, we'll we have a new poll question here in a second before we do that. So let's see here, Sean, why do you tell people where they could find you and what you have going on? All that good stuff? Sure you can get me on Twitter dot com still as Turbo Shawn Underscore and blue Sky Twitch everywhere else as Turbo Shawn Sahawn. I want to check out check out what I'm up to. First of all, Gay Meus Jeopardy is the monthly trivia show that I host on YouTube with this guy with Mike Manatti and a friend of ours from the industry every month. Now I bring you up not just to plug our stuff, but because relevant to this audience. Our most recent episode was with Bailey Myers, who I'm sure people are aware around here. We have fun time hang out with Bailey as we always do. Yeah, and that that is exclusive to patrons right now, but we'll be free for everyone at the end of the month. So if you just want to wait a couple of weeks, that's totally cool too. Just search for Game Mess Jeopardy on YouTube. You'll find it. But yeah, outside of that giant bomb stuff, I'm right here doing social media mostly like the tiktoks and YouTube shorts and all that stuff. You see a tiktak you like, that was me, and then doing editing and post production stuff helping him out Jan a little bit nowadays, you know, taking the smart stuff off his plate because that man works too damn hard, too much, too too much. But by the way, I didn't see this. I just saw it because I was getting caught up on Twitter the our day. Shout outs to Jan on six years at Giant Bomb. Can we get some claps in the live chat for Jan puld everything together around here Later in the week, I will be on our stuff around here too. We got what tomorrow Tomorrow we got unprofessional Fridays on a Thursday. That's where we are doing. We're doing some Call of Duty stuff. Oops all Nicky's addition, I'm so excited for this time. I've been trying to get this off the ground for a while. Now. I'm very gonna be me, you, Jeff Baklar, and our own Nicky Nicky Grayson. We're gonna be playing some Call of Duty. We're gonna hop into war Zone, and then we're gonna play some MW three multiplayer afterwards. But the kicker is the entire time we will be of course Nicki Minaj is running around. Yeah. Yeah, so that's gonna be fun. Check that out tomorrow Thursday on Giant Bomb, and then on Friday we have Thursday Night Throwdown on a Friday. This is all. This is all because it's scheduling where we're going to check out the new Mario Kart DLC tracks. Yeah, get Mario Kurt downloaded and come play with us. It'll be You do not need the DLC to play on the new tracks, by the way, So like if you just have Mario cart eight Deluxe on your switch, that's cool. We'll set up a tournament. You'll get the code day of way. Tune into the stream. So I just make sure tune in live and you it will be a play Mario Kart with us. It'll be a fun time. Excellent. All right, let's see the new poll question should a game cost morph and has more content? Yes or no. I'm very curious to see what video gamers have to say about this topic. I gues suppose if it's like, oh, if it's like a one hour game, it's only it can only cost one dollar. It's like no, I don't like that either. I want to be able to pay more for a game like a short Hike is game I played so many times. I like that game so much. It does not need to cost less because it's like such a concise experience. I'm so much more willing to pay like fifteen dollars for like a few hour experience from a smaller studio than like sixty or seventy dollars for a bloated ass game from major studio at this point. Yep, all right, we will talk about that on gay mess Warnings here on Giant Bomb tomorrow. Shann already gave you the rundown of what's happening here on Giant Bombs, So I guess what I'm gonna say now is, Shawn, thank you so much for spending today talk with me about video games. I really appreciate it. Hey, it's always good to be on the show Man. Thanks for having me back. Thank you everybody for watching. You're the best audience in gaming. Until next time, have a good one, take care of yourself, and goodbye.
