Braves Open Yankees Series With Fourth Straight Win

Speaker 4: Obviously, always fun after a win. You know, they kicked the Yankees butt tonight. Quite frankly, it was. It was a pretty enjoyable game. But yeah, man, it's always fun to do these.

Speaker 1: Yes, sir, it is uh you mentioned, I mean a great win tonight for the Braves eight to one over the Yankees, And I mean, I don't know how you felt, Steven. This was one of my favorite games of the entire season, quite honestly, looking back on the last couple of months. Opening Day in Philly was a lot of fun, the way they opened up late and scored a bunch of runs. And there have been a couple of other great moments, a couple of comeback wins, a couple of walkoffs, but I mean literally within two pitches tonight, the Braves kind of hit the Yankees in the mouth, And I mean that was just a ton of fun. We're gonna talk about Chris Sale, We're gonna talk about the bullpen being awesome, and then of course eight runs is really impressive against a good pitching staff in New York. But overall, just a really fun game tonight.

Speaker 4: Yeah, And I think I felt the same way. I think, you know, they scored three runs in the first inning, they scored two runs on the first two pitches of the game. You know, we saw that a ton last year. That was kind of a staple of this team. Last year was just first inning runs, just bludgeting teams like early in the game, ending games very early. I don't feel like it's been a staple of the twenty twenty four team. I haven't looked at the numbers. I don't know what their first any numbers are this year, but it just feels like it hasn't been that way. And obviously, you know, since Ronnie got hurt, that's going to play a part in it. But even before that, you know, Ronnie wasn't having a typical Ronnie season. So yeah, like the early runs, just like bludgeoning a team early with.

Speaker 4: It felt a lot like last year. It felt like a last year's game, and that's a lot of fun because last year we had a lot of these where it was just kind of.

Speaker 4: And obviously the you know, the Yankees are the best team in baseball, are at least close to by records. So yeah, I agree, that was one of the more enjoyable games of the.

Speaker 1: It is so encouraging to see the power come back because that was probably the most bizarre part of this downturn offensively for the six weeks that we have talked about seemingly forever on this show. Just the lack of power and the lack of home runs was so bizarre. And I mean, not only are the brave scoring runs right now, but it just feels like the bats are better their work looking deeper into the counts. They've been much better in high leverage spots with runners in scoring position, and as Brian Stiker said, like when a team is slumping, it's just because they're not scoring right, Like, it's not like players aren't giving it. They're all or they're not trying hard. It's just a matter of execution and getting a couple of runs on the scoreboard, and that's kind of the cure all and really for the last week now where the Braves of one seven of their last eight just feels like they're putting together a more complete game offensively, and it's been a lot more fun to watch.

Speaker 4: Well, yeah, and tonight, you know, another encouraging sign was Marcello Zuna really wasn't involved in the offense much at all. You know, it was everybody else. Ozzy, you know, Kelnick started the game two for two against Rodin obviously a lefty, which is you know, a huge for him. That's kind of the big question for him, honestly, especially in the leadoff spot. And then Ozzie came up obviously right handed. Ozzie as a monster to run Homer immediately. Austin kept you know, Austin's stay hot. Sean Murphy had a couple of hits. You know, Loreano uh has kind of come out of nowhere. I tweeted this about twenty minutes ago. But he's already got more extra He's already got as many extra base hits in his last two games with the Braves and he had in two months with Cleveland. So yeah, not only the power, but like up and down the lineup power like depth, like that's what we kind of expected, like we expected this lineup to be top to bottom dangerous, and for two months it was like one guy and you know, Matt.

Speaker 4: But now you're seeing, you know, when this team is really clicking, You're seeing the depth and you're seeing you know, if Sean Murphy, if Austin Reiley, if Ozzy, you know, if one or two guys at the bottom of the lineup, if those guys can can kind of come along olsen In Ozuna. You know, we should get more of these, Like this shouldn't be the this, it shouldn't feel so weird, just you know, see the Braves bludgeing somebody, you know right from the jomb We should see more of these games.

Speaker 4: Hundred percent more encouraging. They had a ton of base runners tonight. They had like, I think they had sixteen opportunities with runners a Scorebison didn't have a great night in terms of like the percentage. I think they were only three to sixteen, but you know, they's just so many opportunities. The long ball was going, yeah, up and down the lineup. It was just a lot of fun and very encouraging to see.

Speaker 1: It definitely was. And you mentioned first two batters of the game. Kelnick first pitch swinging, gets a single to left. Then Ozzy mashed a baseball down the left field line, and then Steven we got to talk about Austin Riley because it just felt inevitable that at some point this otherworldly hitter was going to wake up. And he has been out of his mind since last weekend. When the Braves returned home from Baltimore. It seemed like he was getting closer. Before he had that side injury in New York and then he missed two weeks and just clearly his timing was off. But he had two more hits tonight, including a homer to right center field, which I believe is his third home run to right center field this week, which is a very encouraging sign. He had two walks as well, and over the last eight games, I think Austin's ops is like twenty one hundred or some crazy number. I was trying to do the math before. It is so beneficial to this lineup when Austin Riley is heading. We know that how good Ozuna has been in Matt Olson too, but Austin Riley was kind of the missing component, at least for me, in this team really waking up and getting back to normal, especially without Roland Cooney Junior. And based on the last week, it has been full capital letters Austin Riley and just continue to have a really good game tonight.

Speaker 4: Yeah, and Austin had three home runs for the season when that Tampa series started, and that Tampa series was last week. We're talking like, you know, eight games ago, and since then, he's got four homers in his last eight game. So he's got more homers in the last eight games. And he had the first you know, two and a half months of the season. So yeah, the strikeouts are way down. I think it's only strikeout like twice in the last eight games. You know, he'd gotten up there in strikeouts. His walks had come down, his power had come down last eight eight or nine games.

Speaker 4: The powers back, the right center field power, the walks, you know, not striking out, like all the signs are there that like all right, he's he's back. I think he had a I think at his low point he had like a seventy five WRC plus for the season, and if you look up after tonight's game, I think he's at like a one to twelve. So he's added almost forty points of WRC plus to his total in the last eight games. Yeah, I mean without Ronald, there is I thought Sean and I talked about this. Without Ronald, there is no version of the Braves that can accomplish what they want to accomplish without Austin Riley, like they just don't have. You know, when you have a guy like Ronald who can be put up an MVP season, you don't necessarily need, you know, your third best to be elite. But when you take him out, now Austin is now either your first or second best guy, depending on where you put Olsen. And obviously you have to add a Zun into that mix now, but after how he's done the last year, but you need Austin like you have to have Austin. There's no version of this team that's going to succeed consistently without him, and so having him back is just massive and the right center field power is fantastic. The lack of strikeouts is fantastic. Yet all the signs are there that he's finally he's finally awoke.

Speaker 1: He looks like a new man out there. I think you could really tell, especially when Austin was just lost in that National Series and then the Oriole Series, you just kind of tell that he was kind of sitting on the bench and just not sure what was going on. It was pretty rough to watch, but clearly Austin has figured something out. You know, after that first inning, the Braves go up three to nothing. Jared Kelnick had another hit off of Carlos Rodan, just always encouraging off of a lefty to make it four nothing. There was a very looky play in left field with Adam duvall on a baseball that looked like it was going to be about eight rows deep into the stands, and a crazy gust of wind must have come in because then the ball ended up bouncing maybe twenty feet before the fence. It was very bizarre, but thankfully, even with the Yankees cutting the lead to four to one, and in that ballpark, you always have to be a little nervous just the way that that ball can fly. Out of there and some of the power that the Yankees have. Ramon Loreano, who we should probably give a little credit to. On the show tonight, Ramon Loreano came through with a two out, two strike RBI double to push the lead to five to one. And I don't know about you, Steven, I've been pretty impressed with Loreano, especially facing left handed pitching, and it feels like he's kind of locked himself into that outfield corner spot, especially against lefties.

Speaker 4: Yeah, there was a Justin Tuscano, who, by the way, you had that was a great show that you did with him a couple of weeks ago. If you missed that, Scott did an interview with you and I thought he had some really good insights for the club. But Justin tweeted out, I think it was about the time he hit that double that you're talking about that Loriano went to Triple Aquinet right after the Braves acquired him and made some adjustments he got with the Braves hitting coach and Triple A and he kind of said he found something and that he's as confident now as he's been in a long time.

Speaker 4: I mean, he's driving the ball you know, I think his last at bat or a second to last at bat in that Detroit series, he crushed the ball out of the ballpark for his first home run with the Braves, and obviously three doubles tonight, so you know, he's got four extra base hits in his last two games. So yeah, I mean that's huge. You know, the Braves still needs some help against righty's. I think we all know that. You know, Ozzie's not the same level of hitter against righty's. Duvall Arcia or you know, struggle pretty hard against righty's. The Braves need some left handed help in the outfield. But from the when they're facing lefties like they are tonight with Loriano duvall, you're in pretty good shape. I mean you can roll this lineup out against lefties and feel pretty good that you're not you know, you're not insufficient in terms of offense.

Speaker 4: If he's ever going to get it back, and credit to him. You know, he's worked and the bats look good. He's hitting some rockets. Even some of his outs have been loud, so yeah, a good sign for him at great games and that obviously three doubles is huge, and especially at the bottom of the lineup.

Speaker 1: Yeah, you made a great point. I think on the bottom of the lineup. It felt like last season, when this offense was just so good, it felt like the bottom of the lineup was giving them something basically every night, which is a lot easier said than done for most major league lineups. So very encouraging indeed. And then in the fourth inning, the Braves scored their final two runs of the night, or actually their final three runs of the night in the fourth inning to make it eight to one. But I in particular wanted to bring attention Matt Olsen two run homer, and you had a great tweet and screenshot of a perfect lower in a way slider that Matt Olsen somehow got his bat to against a pretty solid lefty and Carloshurdan and Olsen lifted it into the right field seats and that was just a really impressive home run from Matt. It pushed the lead to seven to one. They would add another one there, but again, man, just overall it felt like basically everyone in the lineup tonight other than one or two guys had a really really strong showing.

Speaker 4: I mean, it's Yankee Stadium, I get it, But like that ball didn't go down like, you know, all the way down the right field line, like he still hit that late.

Speaker 4: That was the exact, almost the exact same pitch that Chris Saale got Wan Soto looking on that like perfectly plays down on a way slider with two strikes, Like you do not expect to give up a home run on that pitch. You don't expect to give up anything. You know, that's a strikeout or a week round ball. So to hit that thing three to eighty and into the seats, you know, Matt Olson is a monster. Like Madelson's a monster. Like we don't say it enough, you know. I know he goes through these kind of slow points in May and people freak out, and he's always gonna be the guy that replays Freddy Freeman.

Speaker 4: Like Madilson's a monster. He had fifty four home runs last year and he hits balls like that out of the park, which is like, there's like ten humans on the planet that can do that. So yeah, that was that was tremendous. You know, obviously just more depth in the lineup, more power in the lineup. But yeah, I thought that was as soon as I saw that Piers and there's no way this dude just hit that pitch out of the park and it was a perfect pitch and he crushed it, So credit to him.

Speaker 1: All right, Steven, we're back, and so is Chris Saale. I gotta be honest, man. When the Braves traded for sale, I was not overwhelmed. I was not sure what to make of it. I knew, of course how good Chris Sale was years ago, but he was also someone who had barely been healthy for four or five seasons. And this guy is pitching at the highest of levels this season, picked up his tenth win. His underlying numbers are unbelievable, and even tonight he wasn't like his a one perfect command self, but he continued to get a ton of swing and miss and just I mean, the Yankees really had no chance. From the opening inning.

Speaker 4: He's you know, his average fastball velocity is I mean, if you look at it, I think his average fastball velocity this year's is right at ninety five miles an hour. I think it's like ninety four point nine, which is what he was doing in like twenty fourteen. Like that's the exact same fast average fastball veloscity had in twenty fourteen. So like he literally hasn't lost anything. We saw tonight he blew one so to away at ninety eight. You know that Slider is unbelievable, especially against lefties. You can see, you know, just please God let him get to October healthy, because you can see a world where like he makes you know, Kyle Schwarbur and Bryce Harper's life just miserable in a playoff series. If we can just please get him to October healthy, that's obviously. You know, you and Brad had that podcast right after the trade was made, and you guys kind of said the key thing right like, it's the thing is that when he's been healthy, he's been good, and he's been healthy this year, and so if they can keep him healthy, you know what that could do in October.

So I don't know if the Braves guys are going to get dinged for that. But just off of pure like numbers and stuff, Chrissele Ronaldald Lopez both deserve to be in the All Star Game. They both deserve to be in the Cy Young conversation.

But I mean, it looks like a brilliant move now because the Braves would have probably I mean, I don't know what an extra ten million dollars onto that deal if they wanted to try to extend sale today versus when they did it in.

Speaker 4: I didn't mind the trade as much as like you said, the you know, guaranteeing him for twenty plus million and twenty five was not my favorite thing in the world. But I mean I said this to Bowman when we did the Mark Bowman interview, but like that this might go down as one of Alex's best moves ever. And this dude has had some incredible moves, but like, if he pitches like this for the next two years, and obviously we've got to knock on every piece of wood you can see, like he's got to stay healthy, But if he pitches like this the next two years, this is one of the greatest moves any GM has ever made.

Speaker 1: Yeah, really a fantastic edition for Sale after Sale departed five innings, only one hit, which was the fluky ball, and left field with Adam Duvall that we talked about, had three walks, but also eight strikeouts. Just kind of felt like the Yankees were in defense mode basically all night. Maybe they weren't striking out, but if it seemed like everybody was down to two strikes and just kind of swinging for their lives to try to get something on the baseball. It's very a strong night from Sale. His era is down to two point nine to one A, two point three FIP, A two point four to nine x FIP, and I mentioned now ten and two on the season, so very very good stuff there from Sale. And then the bullpen was fantastic tonight, and it was an eight to one lead so in the sixth inning, and a to one lead is not foolproof by any means. But Dave Bell Hernandez did a nice job in the sixth king, Jesse Chavez himself had a very nice seventh inning, Dylan Lee had a perfect eighth, and the legend himself, Grant Holmes closed it out in the ninth inning, got a double play ball from Aaron Judge to close it out. But a really nice job tonight by the bullpen to cover those final four innings and never really give the Yankees a chance.

Speaker 4: He might be on the All Star team legitimately at forty. This guy was drafted in the same draft class as Jeff Francorp in two thousand and two. He was drafted in two thousand and two. There are players on the Braves team that were born in two thousand and two and he was drafted in two thousand and two. And he's he's got a ear in the ones. I mean, it's crazy. I you know, that man needs to be studied. But yeah, a great game from the bullpen. In that ballpark with that lineup, like you said, even at eight to one, I never feel comfortable. I mean, you know, I'm an Atlanta sports fan, so I never feel comfortable about any but yeah, in that ballpark with that lineup, you're never comfortable. So great job. Obviously, Chris Sale probably wanted to go more than five. The one thing the Yankees did tonight, like you said, was they did foul off a ton of pitches to drive his pitch count up. But yeah, four scorers from the bullpen to close it out. So always good to see, Always good.

Speaker 1: To see, indeed, and now tomorrow night, Saturday and then Sunday as well. Brian Snicker should have his full array of top guns in the bullpen rested and ready to go, which is great you think about being able to give these guys extended periods off. Braves win seven to nothing on Wednesday, they have the off day on Thursday, and then an eight to one win tonight on Friday. Those are the things you need to give your top relievers. A couple of days off consecutively. It's just one of those things that maybe will never necessarily see in a box score, but is always a good thing when you can give them multiple days off at a time, especially over one sixty two. Tomorrow night, Steven, we have another game in prime time. This one is going to be on Fox National at seven to fifteen PM from Yankee Stadium and a pretty interesting pitching matchup. It is going to be forty year old Charlie Morton trying to keep up his recent run of success against Marcus Stroman, who is probably the worst pitcher in the Yankees rotation. Stroman has not been bad this year by any means. On the surface a three point nine era, but his underlying numbers have not been great. Doesn't strike out a whole lot, has been walking a few too many. But when Stroman is right he gets a lot of ground balls and that's made him successful for a long time.

Speaker 4: I told him him and I did a show a few weeks ago and I told him every time he you know, every time he looks good out there, Brad just looks smart. And Brad's been defending this guy for two three years now because you know, I mean there are times when he does look his age, but every year you look up, he's got an era in the three, he's got a fip in the threes. He just keeps going in same thing this year. So yeah, obviously a tough test, you know, this lineup. I don't suspect this lineup is going to get shut down too many times in a row. They you know, the Yankees did have a really rough series against Baltimore. Baltimore beat him like seventeen to five on Thursday, and obviously they just lost eight to one today, so they're not in a good stretch right now. So hopefully the Braves can maybe get one more. You know, obviously if you win tomorrow, then you want to get greedy, especially with Max on the Mount on Sunday, and go for a sweep. But you know, when the series started, you would you would have taken two out of three at any point. So I would love just to get one more and get out of here before the Yankees wake up again. Yeah, a good pitching matchup. You know, we've we've actually faced Strowman a decent bit.

Speaker 1: I will say this, on a technical level, it is fantastic that they have the super high rest cameras. It's clean, there's not a bunch of crap all over. I go back and forth on like the percentages of RBI or percentages of a walk. It's like, oh my god, come on, either he's gonna walk or he's not gonna walk. I'll tell you in thirty seconds what's gonna happen. But I think from like a camera and audio perspective, it is as good as it gets, you know. I think the announcers tonight we're kind of meh. I know, they kind of rotate those guys around and gals. Yeah, it's fine. I mean it's if the Braves regularly were on Apple TV plus, I would not love it. But you know what, once a every six weeks or so, it feels like they're on there. I don't hate it.

Speaker 4: Usually Visually it is a stunning broadcast. Yeah, they have unbelievable cameras. Even the audio, Like, the audio quality is really high. Like you can tell like this is an Apple like broad Like you can tell it's a high end broadcast just from a technical point of view. But yeah, the announcers are not my favorite. You know, if they showed one more like Braves losing in a playoff game, and that's not the announcers necessarily, that's more of the production side. But like, yeah, it felt like I was watching the NFL Draft, you know a couple of years ago, where they told a sad story about every guy that came up on the on the stage. You know, they were showing like every every heartbreak the Braves ever had. But yeah, but anyway, Saturday's game, Yeah.

Speaker 4: It'd be I think it's a six fifteen start, yeah, so or seven to fifteen Eastern. But yeah, Strowman, Morton. It'll be a good game. You know they're gonna need offense. I mean, you can't really expect probably Morton to go shut down a Yankees lineup. It'd be great if you did, but you know, probably two or three Aurn runs is probably what the most likely outcome is. So the offense has got to keep going, like you know, they had those kind of two games against Detroit where they won two to one because the pitching was fantastic. But you know, I want to see the offense just keep going, just keep you know, keep five six runs. So let's go on a stretch where we can kind of give the pitching a break a little bit. But yeah, it'll be a good game and hopefully they can win the series out right tomorrow.

Speaker 1: Yes, indeed, let's wrap up the series and then, like you said, going to Sunday for a chance to sweep behind Max Freed would be pretty great. It does feel like we're maybe catching the Yankees at their most vulnerable point all year long. They have a couple of injuries in the lineup. They got thumped by the Orioles earlier this week, which kind of made national news. It was on foul Territory. Are our good friends at foul Territory. Ken Rosenthal was on there and talking about the Yankees have kind of run into some adversity for the first time all year, and hey, maybe that's to the Braves.
