Speaker 1: What's the matter, AJ, what's the matter?

00:00:01
Speaker 2: Over your ears? Alana? Because Christian Walker is coming up to bat again. So God Ristian Walker.

00:00:08
Speaker 1: He destroyed the Dodgers his entire career. Good afternoon, everybody, and welcome to a brand new episode of foul Territory. That is a J. Pierzinski. That is Eric Kratz. I am your pinch hitting host, your spots starter Alana Rizzo in for Scott Braun Boys. It looks like you're both in hotel rooms where you be. AJ.

00:00:32
Speaker 2: First of all, Alana, you're used to being that spot starter since you root for the Dodgers, and all they do is have spot starters every game, so you know you should be good at it. You should be good at it because as a home.

00:00:44
Speaker 1: Run, well you know what. That's They're still leading the league and wins in the National League, and that's fine.

00:00:49
Speaker 2: Still works, Sure, that's true. Now if they would just stop telling the astros what was coming, it would be better.

00:00:54
Speaker 1: But other than that, that's a different topic of conversation. AJ, that's a different topic of your station. Where are you.

00:01:02
Speaker 2: I'm in Atlanta the All Star Games here this week. I'm actually brought my son to Atlanta for a couple of days to go to this place called Maven Baseball. It's like a drive line for hitters on the East Coast here, and he has an all star break from his summer league, so we shot up here to get him some swings. They have the high speed cameras and all the body sensors and all that, and then when he's in college he can't use it because he'll be close to her. And they do a video program where you can use it to fix things.

00:01:30
Speaker 1: All right, And Eric, I think you're traveling with your kids as well. Where are you.

00:01:35
Speaker 3: I'm with my son up in the terrible, terrible weather state of Massachusetts. Oh wait, you're there too, So it's so freaking hot up here. I'm in Boston shipping off the Boston. We're like shipping off to some air conditioning.

00:01:50
Speaker 1: Yeah, drop Hick Murphy's no, what is up shipping off to Boston? It's hot here. You're absolutely right. There's seven days of good weather in Massachusetts total in the entire calendar year. Seven days. You're not hitting one of them. Don't forget guys to subscribe. Hit us up on FT Live. We love to have the comments. We'd love to have you guys part of the show. Appreciate you being here. Merchant foul Terris foul Territoryshow dot Com. All right, let's get to it. Let's charge the Mound boys charge of about interesting timing. If you think about the Washington Nationals, the Boston Red Sox took it to them, but they have decided to go ahead and have a fire sale. And by that age, I mean they're firing everybody. It looks like Mike Rizzo is out. It looks like David Martinez, their manager, is out. What do you think about the situation going on with Washington?

00:02:40
Speaker 2: Weird timing. They do have the first pick on Sunday in the draft too, which is an interesting time to fire your general manager. Listen, Dave Martinez, it's not his fault. He won a World Series not long ago twenty nineteen. Mike Rizzo has been there a long time. Just to me goes on the owners. They didn't spend money, They didn't pick the necessary moves in a tough NLAs with the Mets, the Braves, the Phillies, they spend money and guess what they have. They have really good teams in the NATS. Yes, they're competing with the Braves, because the Braves are banged up like no team other than the Dodgers that we've probably ever seen. But yeah, to me, this is like Learner fired Rizzo and Martinez. But I mean sometimes you got to look in the mirror and say, man, we got to spend some money because they got some good players James Wood cj Abrams. I mean, they got some good young players that are there and ready to do it, and they got to get supplemental pieces around them. If you don't do that, you get in a constant cycle of oh, our players like Mackenzie Gore, they're good. Oh we're not good enough, so we got to trade them and then we got to start over. But no, spend some money like you did in twenty nineteen. Bring in I'm not saying you bring in Suzarn Corban and all those other guys. You got to bring in somebody to supplement this roster. And they didn't do that.

00:03:46
Speaker 1: It seems like ownership needed to decide on options for both Martinez and Rizzo for twenty twenty six. But the timing to AJ's point is peculiar in terms of it's almost never that a general manager against fired before the deadliner, oftentimes before the end of the season. And when I think of Mike Rizzo, I think of the Nationals. I mean, the Learners have been loyal to Rizzo, whether it's been to a fault or not, incredibly loyal. What do you think about the timing of this whole thing?

00:04:16
Speaker 3: Yeah, I think I think it's terrible. I think it's terrible because one, they've done all their work for the draft. I think the draft is probably just plug and play. You really can't screw up the draft if you have the number one pick, unless hey, you know what, we'd like to go with a super low pick or super low money pick. Let's try to lowball somebody with our first pick. You know, maybe the ownership wants to do something like that. I doubt it because the last group, the last winning team, was built on that. To me, I just don't see why, except for the contract needed to be decided, why you would make the decision now, which a team that's rebuilding needs to have all their ducks in a row right now. They don't need to have people looking over their shoulder like, well, I'm not even gonna be here, so why would I care. I just there's a lot of things with the Gnats that don't I don't get. They won the World Series and it was like, that's fine, We're glad we did it, Like Nats fans. That's when Gnats fans came aboard, like they were like, yeah, they're wearing their Nats hats nattitude all over the place, and then they just like, oh, that's fine, that's all we're really building that whole team for was one World championship and they got it. And it just feels like since then their record shows it too. Since then, they just really don't care about putting a winning product consistently out on the field.

00:05:39
Speaker 1: Yeah, not a lot of curly w's as much as there used to be. This is just so strange too, is again with the timing and things. But you look at it, though, how does this AJ affect a clubhouse? Because now you look around, Davey Martinez isn't there. They don't even have an interim manager. Miguel Cairo is quote thinking it over, I'm not exactly sure what that means. Mikey Bartolo is the interim GM. But now, what do you do if you're walking into that clubhouse today as a player.

00:06:04
Speaker 2: Well, first of all, let's not forget then that's kind of got a little bit screwed by COVID because they didn't get to do all the things that other teams get to do because they won. And then twenty twenty, remember it was the year that was cut short, so they didn't get to do all the cool stuff that every other team gets. So it was a pandemic. So there was nothing they could do about that. But how does this affect players? It sucks. I was on a team where we fired the manager in the middle of the year. It changes everything because every player starts looking over their shoulder, like, oh man, you know, does this new manager like me? What do I have to do to get in his good grades? Is this? Oh man, what's he thinking? What's this new coach thinking? It's a bad situation. We've seen it work in a lot of places in mid season where the teams get better because it's a new voice, because players are like, man, we got to try harder, We got to play harder because I don't know where we're standing now. I've never been in a situation where the GM was fired. That's a new one to me because usually wait to fire the gym at the end of the year. But it just shakes everything up and everything is going to be different. I don't care who. You know, if they take the assistant GM, move them to the head GM, it's still gonna be different because there's gonna be different thought processes, different moves. And if whoever they decided to hire, I mean, are they gonna hire Miguel Cairo, I don't know. They bring up Matt Lee Croy from tripa A, I don't know. I mean, it's weird. Normally, when you fire someone like this, you already have somebody in the wings ready to come up. When I was with the Braves, Freddie Gonzalez got fired, Brian Snicker was they didn't make the move, so they had assurances from Brian Snicker he was gonna take the job. Usually don't make a move like this unless you have somebody ready to go.

00:07:27
Speaker 3: Mage Cairo I talked to him actually when I was in Pittsburgh earlier this year, and I was like, Maggy, I was like, how on earth do you not have a big league managerial job? And his quote was, you know what if the if a good one comes along, I'm not just taking anything. So for him to say, uh, I'm waiting, or we'll see good for him. You don't have to. Yes, I get it. If your goal in life is to be a big league manager, the only one of thirty, so so many people have said that. But if you're like, you know what, there's a standard I want to keep in the sense of like, I want to manage a team that wants to win, in the sense that the front office is pushing to win. And I bet he may not want another intern tag. I'm only going off of what he told me in Pittsburgh earlier this season. But he's not just gonna take any job. This guy. And I think he'll be a great manager one day, but who knows?

00:08:23
Speaker 2: What do I know?

00:08:24
Speaker 1: And he has a lot of ties obviously with Davey Martinez, he was the bench coach there. That's got to be a little bit weird. But yes, to your point, there's only thirty jobs in all of Major League Baseball, and I'm sure David Martinez would understand if Miggy would take the job. Anybody would, I mean, anybody that wants to be a big league manager.

00:08:40
Speaker 2: You can't be that picky though. I'm sorry Miguel Cairo, he can't be that picky. What's he waiting for? The Dodgers job, the Phillies job. I mean, what's the Cardinals' job. What's he waiting for? Because you can say, oh, I don't want certain jobs, but at the end of the day, you got to go and prove yourself. Davey Martinez was fortunate he went from the Cubs, where he was bench coach of Madden they won, into the Nats where they wanted him again. Those jobs don't pop up, though, because you got to put in your time. And I don't mean this, this is not an knock on Miguel Cairo at all, but I mean, if the let's say the Yankees move on from Aaron Boom, god forbid is their first name on Brian CASHMZ, this is going to be Miguel Cairo, They're gonna shoot for bigger fish first. So I don't know that necessarily you can be that picky, but hey, if you that's what he wants to do, and he wants to continue to try to get that dream job. God bless them.

00:09:25

Come watch the show and say hello, all right guys, that's it.

00:11:04
Speaker 2: Huh hold on here, I'll show the people.

00:11:06
Speaker 1: It is very beautiful. That's a great park, and you're at a great hotel attached to the park. That's awesome. That has done a great job of How about that. Atlanta's done a great job of making that whole area around the park. The battery is what it's called a lot of fun. You can walk around, you can shop, you can do all the things, you can eat, you can take in a ball game, you can stay right there. It's very nice. I wish all parks were.

00:11:33
Speaker 3: Like, yeah, that's great, And if you're another owner, you can look at it and be super jealous and hold your city at ransom to so that you can also get a battery around your stadium.

00:11:44
Speaker 1: Hmm, do you have somebody in mind?

00:11:46
Speaker 3: I won't name names.

00:11:48
Speaker 1: You're not naming names, You're not name dropping in this particular situation. Well, guys, this isn't good if you're the Brave. Since the Braves finished a three game sleep with the Mets on June nineteenth, they failed to win any of the five series that followed. They're five and eleven while averaging just three point one runs per game. Even worse than that, if you can believe it, thirty one of the fifty runs in that sixteen game stretch came in the five wins. That means nineteen runs in the eleven losses that they've had. That's basically negative one point seven runs per game. What are the Braves doing besides not hitting or scoring?

00:12:24
Speaker 2: I'm scoring, not scoring? They can't score. This has been this has been a theme form for two years now. Last year we all question, man, where's the offense go? Because remember Acunya Olsen, Murphy Albes, Riley Harris, all these guys it was their thing, right. They signed all these guys to long term deals, were like, these guys are gonna score a million runs for the next five years. It disappeared. Last year they fired their hitting coach, Kevin Sitzer. He gone right. They brought in a new hitting coach. It hasn't gotten any better. Nobody knows why. It's not the ballpark. The ball flies at the truest part, Like I could literally sit here where I'm sitting right now and probably hit a ball from here to home plate, and I haven't touched the baton five years. Both flies at the truest park. So it's not the ballpark. It's the players. I don't know what happened, but their offense went.

00:13:06
Speaker 3: Away, don't You couldn't hit it that far the to the chop house right now? But what else? What else? What else could have gone differently in the last two years, They didn't all of a sudden just stop Like people are like, oh, they're comfortable because of their contracts. I don't believe that.

00:13:29
Speaker 1: This bums me out. I like Clark Schmand a lot. I've met him, had a conversation with him a couple of times. His family's super cool. He was doing really well for the New York Yankees. Now he's on the shelf, likely a UCL tear guys and is expected to require Tommy John surgery. Just notched it up to another guy needing TJ and fourteen starts the season. Schmid pitch to a four and four record with a three three two ERA. This is a bummer. I mean, the Yankees are struggling. They're starting rotation is horrendous. They've started to hit a little bit, but the ERA has ballooned and this this AJ is not going to help matters.

00:14:03
Speaker 2: They're in third place, well, they're tied for second. I guess they were in third place for a second there, but then the Rays also you know the.

00:14:09
Speaker 3: Rate Yankees are in third place. It's July seventh, but.

00:14:12
Speaker 2: Nobody had running away from That's what I'm saying. But their pitching is faltered. I mean, Rodno and Freed have been good. It's the other people that have a member good and they need heel back. They're obviously not getting collback. And now if Schmid goes down, that stinks. Their bullpen hasn't been as good. But the big thing about the Yankees, and I'll say this and I'll keep saying it. They only score when they hit home runs. They have to hit home runs to score. They don't manufacture runs very well. And if their pitching is not perfect and they get into these extra inning games where teams can hit a ground ball, a second hit a fly ball and score that run. The Yankees haven't done that. That's why the record extra innings is bad. There's a lot of things, but the pitching is is number one. They're gonna have to go out and get some help. Eric.

00:14:53
Speaker 1: I like what Jazz Chishom Junior said to Bob Klapp. He said, I've played with the Marlins. I've seen bad teams go through rough time. He's not lying, and believe me, this isn't even close to what I've been through in the past. I still feel like we're going to be fine. He's had a lot of dingers. I think he's hit like eight home runs recently, but he's had a lot of errors too, playing third base defensively. But I believe what he's saying though. I mean, the Yankees obviously are built to get through this.

00:15:17
Speaker 2: No.

00:15:18
Speaker 3: Uh, Are they built to get through it? Yeah? Because I mean they showed what they could do early in the year, but the Jays just weren't playing well early in the year. The Jays could have had a much larger lead had they started out a little bit hotter. So there's ebbs and flows of seasons. Are they built to get through this? That will be the question that can only be answered at the end of the season, because if you don't field your position as well as you should, Hence Gastism should be playing second base, but they have to play him at third because they don't feel like they feel like he's the better option at third. Then you're not going to make plays. You're not going to run base as well, because the ball you can be pitched to to not hit a home run, Like, let's pitch to this guy so he doesn't hit a homer, We'll let him get a single. Well, they're not taking those, Okay. If you're not getting your home runs, then you have to base run. So you have to base run and you have to field, two things that historically they haven't been very good at recently, and I don't know if they're built to be able to do it. I don't think you can just flip a switch to be able to do that. I think Volpi's defense is going to go up. I think he's had a tough start to the season. I think I think Jazz's defense is going to go up when he moves to second base. So I think a starting pitcher and a third baseman are probably highest on the Yankees list.

00:16:42
Speaker 1: Aj Are the Yankees Al champs or is it time to give way to the Tigers? Obviously I'm not discounting the Houston Astros are always in the picture. But is it somebody else's year this year? Besides New York's?

00:16:56
Speaker 2: Uh? Detroit, baby? Can we talk about Detroit? Who's your Tiger? Brandon Inch is my Tiger? Right? I mean, Detroit is where it's at with their young core of kids, with Riley Green and Torkosen having a bounce back year, and then you throw school ball flirty and the way A J. Hinch manages his bullpen Casey Miies having a great season for him, it's Detroit's right now. I'm sorry, I know the Tiger. The Tigers are in the AL Central, and the Yankees have owned the AL Central, But I think this is the year that the Tigers could jump up and bite them and knock them out. Maybe in the LCS if the Yankees get there, because you have to understand, if the Yankees finished where they finish right now, they're a wild card. They got to get through some stuff to get there. Right Houston looks really good again. I mean, they did just sweep your Dodgers there, Alana.

00:17:44
Speaker 1: That the Dodgers had stop stop stop stop, justin rebless and nothing against those guys, but stop, come.

00:17:50
Speaker 3: On, try. I'm not saying that.

00:17:54
Speaker 1: I'm not saying they weren't trying. I'm not saying they weren't trying. But the point is, when the Astros and the Dodgers match up again in the in the World Series, if in fact that does happen, the uh pitching staff, I would hope to God is a lot better and more prepared and healthier than what they have right now.

00:18:10
Speaker 2: Just make sure they're not telling them what's coming a lot. And that's all I got to say.

00:18:13
Speaker 4: Man.

00:18:14
Speaker 2: Apparently apparently the Dodgers are telling them what was coming. Apparently the Dodgers were telling the Astro as well was coming.

00:18:21
Speaker 1: Guys. This is I've seen a lot of terrible first pitches, but this one I believe probably takes the cake. What do you think about this.

00:18:29
Speaker 2: Nah, Yeah, it wasn't that bad. I mean, at least Clark got a glove on it knocked it down. But the second one was money right. But I've seen this before. I've seen this before. Bob Costas did this, and see in Saint Louis, he requested me catch his first pitch. He threw it so far outside. I dove for it, couldn't catch it. They were filming commercial. He called back through a perfect strike. So I've seen this actually happen before. And the best part is in Saint Louis, nobody booed. They actually cheered him for it again, not doing.

00:19:02
Speaker 1: Ovin Kamara didn't do it bad. I guess that bad of a job. I mean, fifty cents was pretty bad. There's been there's there's been some although I will say this, I bet you they practice right then they get out there on the mound, and then I would freak out if I had to throw out a ceremonial first pitch at any ball game. I don't think I could do it.

00:19:19
Speaker 3: Let's get it. I don't want to.

00:19:21
Speaker 1: I don't want to do it like that terrifies me.

00:19:25
Speaker 3: That's why they that's why they screw up. That's why the second one is always better. It's like my golf game. I'll shank the first shot and the next one piped.

00:19:35
Speaker 2: Yeah, what's a shank?

00:19:38
Speaker 1: Well, you don't know what I think is.

00:19:40
Speaker 3: You don't.

00:19:42
Speaker 2: It's like a cramp to me. I don't have them. You don't have.

00:19:45
Speaker 1: You've never shanked a shot, You've never sankna.

00:19:48
Speaker 2: I'm a professional athlete. I can kick the ball and swing and hit it straight I mean not straight, but I don't.

00:19:55
Speaker 1: I do. I do believe that you shank, maybe not cramp, but I do believe that you chang.

00:19:59
Speaker 2: Never ever.

00:20:04
Speaker 3: Cratz.

00:20:04

00:21:03
Speaker 1: All right, guys, This from Dodger insider Max Munsey is saying that we possibly got the best case scenario no structural damage. In their monthsI estimates he'll be out for six weeks, which I figured it was more than a bone bruise. But the good news is, guys, it's not structural. Max Monthly obviously taken one on the knee on a defensive play when somebody slid into him. They need him, I mean, they certainly need his bat, but hopefully nothing broken.

00:21:25
Speaker 2: Guys. No good news, best case scenario, no legam of damage, no structural damage. Because when I was watching this live but we were texting back and forth, it was like Oh that looked bad for poor Max, So great news for him and hopefully Gibbel soon Max, and hopefully when I think we're talking to him tomorrow. So if we do, Lon, I'm sorry, but we'll pump up the Dodgers for you and ask him about the Astro series.

00:21:48
Speaker 1: It is okay that you guys interviewed Dodgers. I don't have to be the only one that talks to these guys. But yes, it is confirmed. Max Munsey, a friend of the show here, will be on with us tomorrow. They need him, no, I mean he's a huge cog that lineup. I mean he's a guy that gives you a professional at bats. He's patient. It stinks when when these guys, when anybody goes down, but especially one of your key guys, eric.

00:22:08
Speaker 2: An all start too again.

00:22:12
Speaker 4: M hmm.

00:22:13
Speaker 1: Could have been an All Star.

00:22:17
Speaker 2: Tough, tough position.

00:22:20
Speaker 1: What's a tough position? Third base?

00:22:22
Speaker 2: Third base? Yeah you're not Machado's Machado. I mean that's stuff that's that's to start for sure. But yeah, he could have been, should have been an All Star. But you know what, sometimes you need glasses. Kids, don't be ashamed to wear glasses.

00:22:35
Speaker 1: Just saying, well, it helped and then it helped Muncie. So that's right, it's helped all of us, all of our all of our readers. I don't even know if a j if you're into readership, Eric, I.

00:22:47
Speaker 2: Can't read a lot of No.

00:22:49
Speaker 1: No, no, I actually have to wear readers. Do you have to wear readers like you?

00:22:53
Speaker 2: I've been wearing contact since I was ten years old.

00:22:56
Speaker 1: No, I have contacts, but I also have to have readers, all right, much more to talk about.

00:23:01
Speaker 2: We don't want to scare the children.

00:23:03
Speaker 1: Oh wow, my god. No, it's it's fine, it's okay. Well, I will maintain, gentlemen, that the next time that the Astros and Dodgers meet up, which would be the World Series, that the Dodgers will have better pictures on the mound than they did this time. However, the Astros absolutely killed the Dodgers over the course of their weekend series at Dodgers Stadium. The Astros of now when nineteen of their last twenty four games, and they took it to my Dodgers.

00:23:46
Speaker 3: Eric, thoughts, Yeah, thoughts were they were just a hot team. Nobody had, nobody had any trash can issues. Dodgers threw the best players out there, and you know they're just they're just playing rehab games again, you know, show Hayes rehabbing the rest of their starting rotation is just like, we're just gonna get healthy, like they they can. They can lead the National League and wins without even really throwing the best team out there. Are they gonna?

00:24:16
Speaker 1: Why do you sound starcastic when you say.

00:24:18
Speaker 3: All this, because we've had quite a bit of chatter about this all day today on and off camera, So my sarcasm level is super high because you are the homer of all homers. But let's be realistic. They did score some of these against the bullpen, which has been a little bit ebb and flow. They have some injuries out there also, But Yamamoto is really the only guy right now that is yes solidified. He's gonna be your game one starter. They still have to figure out how to give him some time off because they're not just gonna blow pass like we talked about with Pepio. They're not just gonna blow past the most innings ever, so they have to figure that out. Listen, Dave Roberts just got his extension. What he has to deal with as far as like, availability of players is a much harder job than what people think, like, oh man, this guy, you know, he just got's the best, the best roster money can buy. He has to figure out how to keep Tanner Scott healthy for the playoffs. He has to figure out how to keep the rest of his bullpen healthy. When you don't have starting pitchers, who are you know, the best starting pitchers. I mean, they have big league starting pitchers, they just don't have their all star starting pitchers like they had no doubt.

00:25:36
Speaker 1: Houston swept the Dodgers for the first time at Dodger Stadium since two thousand and eight. I mean, Houston was the better team this week. And what's the matter, aj, What's the matter?

00:25:44
Speaker 2: Gaver your Earsalona? Because Christian Walker is coming up to bat again.

00:25:48
Speaker 1: So Christian Walker destroyed his entire career. He's destroyed this. I mean, think about how many times that that he came up to the plate with the Diamondbacks against the Dodgers. He crushes them. I would just go like this every time Christian Walker came up.

00:26:03
Speaker 2: Yes, true, but let me sell you this one thing that Eric did hit on that worries me a little bit about the Dodgers, their bullpen's getting hit. Right, Tanner Scott was unhittable last year, he's been getting hit and he got hit. All these guys that have been that was their strength, right last year bullpen game, they got through their bullpen and they were unbelievable. But these guys, yes, they're tired because they have to pitch five. They have to cover four, five, six innings. That's the difference with the Rays this year. The starters are going longer their bullpens. Rest did excuse me? You can't just have five innings of every game bullpen covers.

00:26:37
Speaker 1: Doesn't work, agreed thousand percent. So what do you do about that? I mean, do you just you ride this through and hope that you can maintain Do you do you bring in some reinforcements at the deadline? Do you bring Joe Kelly back? Do you bring in Brett Honeywell?

00:26:50
Speaker 4: Do?

00:26:50
Speaker 1: I mean? Who do you get? Do you try for some of that?

00:26:54
Speaker 3: I think that's Dave Roberts, And honestly, it's part of not just Dave Robins, but it's also the medical staff, It's it's pitching coaches. All those guys they have to go to the guys who are going to start and say, you guys are gonna have to wear it because right now their offense keeps them in so many games. When these starting pitchers, you know, you're like, ah, it's a one run game. We want to win this game. Players want to win the games. There's there's nobody, nobody's front office. They want to win the games. I get it. But you're gonna have to force some of these guys. You're gonna have to force Emmitt Sheihan to go more than six in a really good start, five in an average start, four in a below average start. You're gonna have to force them to go more, which is gonna put more pressure on the offense to score more. You're gonna have to go. Ribleski's gonna have to throw more. They have to throw more. And I don't know if they can make that decision as an organization, but they're still in. They have the best record in the National League. I'm not saying you give away games. I'm saying you have to figure out how to not crush your bullpen guys in all of these close games, because this is when it starts to creep up. Usually not pre All Star break. It's usually July twenty to like August fifteenth, when dudes are just cashed and they're like, oh, I can't throw anymore.

00:28:21
Speaker 1: Yeah, it's a bullpen that's banged up. It's a starting rotation that is banged up. And coming into the season, I was like, man, this bullpen is so good with the addition of Kirby Eights and Tanner Scott, we thought that, you know, trying was going to be good. Evan Phillips and they're down a ton of key arms in the bullpen, but nobody gives you length anymore. That's like when you see you know, Trek Scoogle throwing complete games a what is that? And what a Gift's not the way the game goes Dodgers.

00:28:49
Speaker 2: It's not true though, look at the Rays. The Rays used to do it the Dodger way. Yes, then they got better starting pitching, guys that can stay healthy. Now they lead the league in innings from starters, and their bullpen is better be because of it. It's not I disagree with the way the game is going. The game goes the way your players should let you go. If your starters can go deep into games, and that's the way your team's built, then let them go. But if you don't, I mean Garret Cole used to go seven, eight, nine innings every time before he got hurt. Verlander Schurz are these guys that are great. Kershaw used to go nine innings like every start, Right, So I disagree with that's the way the game goes. The game goes like this because we have people that say, oh, this lever in the sixth inning is better than a starter or third time through? Not necessarily the truth, right, No.

00:29:31
Speaker 1: That's the thing though. That's what I'm saying, is like the game lends itself to what the analytics are saying versus then just letting your guys go out there and wear it or not even necessarily wear it, but allowing your guys to see the lineup the third time through. It's just a different fundamental. It's a different approach now. It seems like than it was when you guys played.

00:29:49
Speaker 4: Hey, let's do a little player spotlight thanks to Arena Club. AJA, give me a player this season that you think is underrated and you might want to try and grab his card.

00:29:58
Speaker 2: James would. I don't know that he's underrated, but Washington National's superstar in the making, and the first slab pack I ever opened had him in it, his rookie card, and the value is only going to go up and up and up. And I'm not gonna sell it Qwhie yet, Scott. I'm gonna hold on to because after he continues to hit big homers and put up the stats make All Star teams, it's gonna get more expensive for someone to buy.

00:30:17
Speaker 1: For me.

00:30:18
Speaker 4: This is his first full season in the majors. Keep that in mind. I think he's underrated. He's on a Nationals team that's man hadding enough attention.

00:30:26
Speaker 2: He might underrated homers. When he makes the All Star team this year, they're not going to be underrated.

00:30:30
Speaker 3: That helps.

00:30:31
Speaker 4: He's been intentionally walked four times in a game. Anyway, If you want to try and find a wood rookie card, go check out slab packs on Arena Club and right now you can get twenty percent off your first lab pack. Or if you just want to go with a card purchase, go to Arena club dot com. Slash f oul, use code foul. If you I sell, trade, collect, go for it.

00:30:49
Speaker 1: This is good news. If you're a Padres fan, you Darvish will return from the IL to face the Diamondbacks tomorrow night. Mike Shilt announced Starvish hasn't pitched yet this season due to write elbow inflammation, so it's his twenty twenty five debut that could line Darbish up to make two starts before the break. This is from aj Cassavel, who does a great job covering the padres for MLB dot com. How do you think this impacts? Obviously the podtery's moving forward, guys go ahead.

00:31:15
Speaker 2: They need help, plain and simple any's starting rotation. Help. They're trying to piece together until some of these guys come back. They're not getting Muscrow back obviously anytime soon. They need Cease to pick it up. But darvishall help. They need help. And their bullpen we mentioned their bullpen was unbelievable the first couple of months. They've started a falter because they've had to cover a lot of innings.

00:31:35
Speaker 1: And Eric, you mentioned that it's his first day back in six hundred and thirty eight days. I mean, that's a lot to expect from a guy. We can't imagine that this is going to be the savior.

00:31:44
Speaker 3: Correct not used you's been back. You pitched last year I was talking about somebody else. Sorry, yeah, yeah, I was talking about Big Will. But no, he's not going to be the savior. He's not going to be the savior. But he's going to be somebody that they you don't just pick up. You don't just pick up a you know, a front line starter. So he's not a frontline starter. But can he give you innings? Because their bullpen was legit early, They've hit some bumps in the road, so they need it. Really, they're running after the they're running after a wildcard right now, So how can they get a firm lead in the wild card because I don't think, you know, seven games back of the Dodgers's gonna be tough to catch him, especially since the Dodger just lost three in a row, so it's not like they're gonna run another three in a row.

00:32:32
Speaker 2: Off Again, let me.

00:32:33
Speaker 1: Ask you this. You mentioned Brandon Woodruff. He's back now for the first time in six hundred and thirty eight days. That is great for the Brewers.

00:32:40
Speaker 3: He looked good, Eric, really good, and he even said in his postgame interview. One, I'm super proud of him. Two he said in his postgame interview, he's like One of the best things that happened to him was he had he had sprained his ankle. During that rehab process, he got hit in the elbow, so it allowed him to actually get all the way back to where he wanted to be and he went out and dominated on a big league mount. That is a huge pickup for the Brewers, who I think, because they're a lot closer, do have a shot to catch the cups and adding another bullpen piece. They sent Chad Patrick down. I know it's near the All Star break, so it falls that they won't need another guy. That guy was Rookie of the Year candidate and they got a They got big Woo to fit into that spot. This star rotation just has turned into something that has been is going to be a huge strength going forward.

00:33:30
Speaker 1: All Right, So every year we're talking, you know, All Star Game snubs and somebody should have made the team that didn't. What do you guys think, Eric will start with you, is there anybody that really stands out to you that you wish would have made And they may still because of injuries and those types of things and schedules and stuff, but is there somebody that you would like to see in Atlanta.

00:33:49
Speaker 3: I mean, there's a lot of guys I'd like to see, but there's one guy that deserves it. I think it was like since nineteen thirty six, no player that was leading the league in RBIs didn't make the All Star team. Sayas Suzuki not being on the All Star team is a travesty. It's not like he wasn't good last year. He had like an eight, like an eight thirty six or eight forty six ops, something like that, and he just continued it. He has been They're one of their most consistent hitters. I get it, Kyle Tucker. You know, he's the aircraft carrier all that stuff. But he's been one of the most consistent hitters throughout the entire season. And he gets snubbed. He gets snubbed, And in an interview before the game yesterday, PCA said, this guy maybe one of the most sneaky athletes that people don't know about. Clearly other players don't know about him because the players missed on this one. Sayas Azuki should be an All Star.

00:34:44
Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean I do agree with you there. I mean Kay Jennings or Chad Jennings rather than the athletic it's notable snubs in his opinion Tree turner Raphael Devers, which I don't know about Dovers one Soto among notable misses. Yeah, Saya Suzuki deserves it. But this just goes to show you though, it's so much more about voting, is it not. I mean John Hayman with the tweet Julio Rodriguez made the All Star team over George Springer and Joe Adell. As usual, fans do a better job voting than the players do, so I mean that's part of it, right, you got to vote for them. But yeah, I mean the baby Dave Roberts puts sayas a Zuki on there somehow if there's if there's an injury.

00:35:21
Speaker 2: Listen, Michael Busch to me is a big one too. He's got a nine fifty ops too, So Michael Busch deserves It's tough. I mean, the Cubs have a lot of guys that are having great years, So Michael Busch to me is the big one on that list. Narvaias and I mean, listen, I get why the guys who made it in the American League made it. You're not taking cal Rawley off that team for sure. So and then from there, and so I mean, to me, Michael Busch is the most obvious one. But then who do you take off? Because I know Alta is going to say Andy PaaS should be on the team. But also I think the Mariners Rosarina should have got the nod over Julio Rodriguez. Julio Rodriguez is ops is in the like one hundred and seventeenth or something like that, you know, all of baseball, and he made the All thir team. Listen, Julio Rodriguez is a great player, but he shouldn't have made it this year. He's having a bad first half. So there's you can always do this now, Listen. Pitching is the one thing where you can always make changes because Chris Sales already on the team, So like a from ber Valdez and and some other guys that need to be there, we'll get on it because of guys pitching on Sunday. But to me, you're gonna look at the position players and to me, the biggest numb other than Suzuki, has got to be Michael Bush.

00:36:25
Speaker 3: People are gonna bring up one soda and be like, well, hy can you not bringing one soda? How do the players not vote a j can tell you they send out this paper that and they still do it by paper. I asked somebody last year unless they changed it and now they do it digitally. They send it out early. So before Wan Wan ended up winning, Wan Soda ended up winning the Player of the Month for the month of June. Michael Bush could have won it for the month of June, but Wan Soda had like eleven dingers and just tore it up before all of that happened. Those votes, some of those vot're already in. It's not like they're voting the day before. They vote weeks before, and so that's why you see sometimes some guys having a hot May hot April and players are like, oh yeah, I've seen him. It's just like what's on the top of your mind. So that's why the players miss Sometimes. Also the players sometimes just like, hey, who'd you pick? Oh yeah, I'll take that, or here you fill this out. Sometimes the travel the head of travel fills it out for some guys. So it's not the best, but normally they don't miss it by that much. Wan should be in now, I mean what he's done, but he didn't have it when in my opinion when guys were voting, And that also.

00:37:47
Speaker 1: Begs to question two. When the when the ballots come out, it's whoever was the starter in that position at the beginning of the year, right, So even if that guy's like on the il or it's been terrible, Like if let's just say, if you know, Francisco Indoor is the starting shortstop for the Mets, but then he missed half of the year on on the you know, the injured list, He's still the guy on the ballot that fans are voting for. It's not like they change it based on who's active at the time. So it's not the most perfect system. It's a flawed system. But you know, the managers that have the pool will get you know, the Michael Bushes and the says Zookies of the world on on the roster if there is injury or or whatever. Because it's not it's not it's not a perfect system. What do you think about Clayton being selected as the you know, the legend pick by All Star you know, really, Commissioner Rob Manfred.

00:38:37
Speaker 2: It's a right call. It's a right call. Good for him. He has this ability doesn't affect anything. I don't even know. If Clayton will get to pitch, he'll get to bring his kids to at least one more All Star game. They'll get to experience it. I'm sure he'll live it up. Hopefully he keeps his shirt on we Love You Clayton shirt on with that Dad bought. But yeah, I mean, it's a right call on three thousand strikeouts, all the stuff Clayton Kershaw's done right in this game. It was the right pick. This is one thing where I will say, good job Rob Manfred.

00:39:05
Speaker 1: Yeah, only twenty players have ever hit the three thousand strikeout mark. Only three active guys, right, Verlander, Max Scherzer, and Clayton Kershaw. Now, so congratulations Tim, you said, dad bod they're having another kid. That's going to be their fifth kid. AJ so talk about bringing the kids to the yard that he has four with the fifth on the way. Finally another girl. Since the start of the show, we do have an official now from the Washington Nationals. Gentleman Miguel Cairo has been named with the club's interim manager. If you're just joining us here on foul Territory, the Washington Nationals last night decided to fire both Mike Rizzo as well as their manager Davey Martinez. It looks like Miguel Cairo, at least for the interim, is going to be the manager for the Nats. I mean, no big surprise, I guess, Eric, But again, what remains to be seen and very brought it up. Where where do they go from here? I guess.

00:40:09
Speaker 3: It's more than just the manager, more than just the GM. Where do they go? They got to keep making decisions. If you're talking about just this year, Miguel Cairo has been on the bench, So what is the change that he's going to make in the sense of change of you know, conversations that are being had because he has the year of the players as the bench coach. You're you're there, you see it at day in and day out, and you see the deficiencies. Does he choose to call those deficiencies out? If he does, the players might be like, we don't want you back, or hey, I love somebody keeps me accountable. So that's that's what mcgge's That's what Meggie's choice has to be. Where does he take this team from here?

00:40:52
Speaker 1: But aj is it the same kind of voice. I mean, this is a guy that's been through all of it. I mean, what else could he possibly say that hasn't been said before? I mean, wasn't he following Davy's lead.

00:41:02
Speaker 2: Yeah, he'll have something different to say. It's a different person, so it's a different voice, and maybe he says the same thing. He just says it in a different way and people respond to it differently. I mean, yeah, it's different. But is Miguel Cairo. He's auditioning for this job, maybe long term depending on what they do it the GM position, So he's going to do everything in his power to try to win games and try not that Davey Martinez wasn't. But if he wants this game long term or this job long term, he's gonna have to win games. So maybe he says the same thing. He just says a little bit differently. He's been in this position before, he's managed teams before, so it's not his first time. We'll see how it goes.

00:41:36
Speaker 1: When you were in a situation like this, guys, if a manager got, you know, fired mid season or at any point in the season, what are you looking for for the new guy coming in?

00:41:45
Speaker 2: Eric?

00:41:46
Speaker 1: What do you what do you hope to see? Man?

00:41:50
Speaker 3: Just that he doesn't try to be a hero when he comes in as a manager. I've never seen it where a manager comes in and like, guys, this is what we're gonna do, and this is how it's gonna happened, and it go well. You see guys come in and they assimilate very well to the clubhouse, they have connections.

00:42:08
Speaker 2: And I think it's on the.

00:42:10
Speaker 3: Players too, because the players are kind of embarrassed. Their manager got fired because they weren't playing well. That's the reality of it. Like, no, I've never been on a team where a manager got fired because he was making bad moves. I've been on teams where managers should have gotten fired because they were making bad moves, but they didn't. They just got fired because the team wasn't winning. And so as a player, you're like, look, I'm already embarrassed because we're not doing well as a team. Don't come in here and be like, all right, guys, we're gonna hustle even harder than we did before. Like no, that's not, that's not how it works. It's not you're not giving raw ross speeches. So just assimilate into the clubhouse. As a bench coach, you're shifting over another chair to the left, and you know what you can You can handle this the same way you were a bench coach. Look at how Pat Murphy did it.

00:43:00
Speaker 4: Yeah, no doubt.

00:43:01
Speaker 1: What about you. A new guy comes in, a new voice, what do you anticipate.

00:43:05
Speaker 2: It only happened to me one time. It was Snicker. Brian Snicker came in. I didn't know what to expect because I didn't know Brian Snicker at all. So it was kind of what Krat said. You're just embarrassed out. We weren't playing very well, the team stunk. You just wanted it to You felt bad for the guy who was just let go because it's basically on the players. The manager is not making the moves, he's putting the players out there, and the players are not playing very well. So you just want the manager to come in seamlessly and like Krat said, not try to be a hero. Just keep things rolling and just try to make small improvements, whether it's saying something different to this guy or saying something different to that guy and making them maybe feel just a little bit better about themselves. I don't know that it makes that big of a difference in the middle of a year especially on a team like the Nationals, is not going to compete anyway. So good luck, my Gokaira. That's all I can say. You want this job, you got this job. Here's your chance to go earn it for the long term.

00:43:56
Speaker 1: Yeah, no doubt. Make the most of the opportunity that he has been given and seemingly earned. Aj obviously has a foul territory hat on. But Eric, there was some speculation as we now go into Kratz's hats Kratz hats, there's some speculation as to what was on your lid? What do you got for us today?

00:44:14
Speaker 4: Do you know that is?

00:44:15
Speaker 3: Alana?

00:44:17
Speaker 1: I don't it looks like an Oreo cookie.

00:44:20
Speaker 3: It's a whoopie pie. Oh okay, And supposedly Maine. I'm up here in New England, so I figured how to wear something New England. So supposedly Maine is the place where whoopie pies were invented. And I love a good whoopie pie. So this was Portland's Portland's alternate hat double a for the Red Sox.

00:44:42
Speaker 1: I like you should do like the Portland Sea Dogs. They have a good one too. They have a cool hat. Yeah, there were people speculating it was an o's hat. But it's not. It's a it's a whoopie pie, okay, And there you have it.

00:44:52
Speaker 3: Okay.

00:44:53
Speaker 1: So how about some games that we're looking forward to watching coming up, guys, Tampa Bay Rays at Detroit Tigers. That's a good one. They don't have to face Schooble, so that's nice. And then the Dodgers and the Brewers, Dodgers looking to get back on track, Guardians and Astros, Billies and Giants. What are you guys looking most forward to watch?

00:45:11
Speaker 2: No, I'm going Dodgers Brewers of course. Why Freddy pre guy, Freddy p is pitching against Yamamoto. Dodgers just got smacked by the Astros. They need to win. Oh yeah, by the way, they got to go to Milwaukee and face Freddy Parrault. Not an easy place to win. And Freddy pearlt is having a great year. If you haven't seen his numbers, look him up. Kids under A three, R, nine and four. So it's gonna be interesting to see how they you know, they fly across country kind of to Milwaukee, you know, not the atmosphere. The Dodgers are used to the sun. The weird roof all that, let's see how they handle the adversity.

00:45:44
Speaker 1: Freddy Parolta lock and in quality starts at home. Milwaukee is seven and one guys with him as the starter. To AJ's point, he's had a really good year. Eric Kratz, is there any particular game or series upcoming that you're looking forward to?

00:45:58
Speaker 3: It feels like some prove it series, Like some prove it, like are the Giants going to show up and beat the Phillies. They're at home, it's you know, it's their home turf opportunity. The team flew across the country to play like it feels like a series that the Giants should be able to take. But to me, to prove it is the Diamondbacks. They're not counted out yet, but they're playing a team in their division in the Padres. The Padres are getting you back, They're getting you know, they still have a really good lineup. But the opportunity for the Diamondbacks to play in the division not just make up games, but actually prove that they can score more runs than the other team or let the other team not score as many runs because they're pitching has to start showing up. So to me, anytime the Padres are playing, I want to watch them. So it's a Diamondbacks Padres series.

00:46:52
Speaker 1: And Eric, how much of this could be another audition for Zach Gallan. I mean, he's had a really up and down season. I mean, is he a trade piece? I know that you said that the Diamondbacks aren't out of it completely yet, but I mean, this is a guy I think that is better than his number state. But you know, he's six to nine with the five to four era, a five four five era going up against Starbus today, who's making a season debut?

00:47:16
Speaker 3: I mean, is he is he or is he pressing because it's a free agent year. I don't know. I don't think he's thrown enough pitches in the strike zone, and when he does throw in the strike zone, he's down in the count two zero, two, one three one. So to me, yeah, it's another proven game, but I think it's approven for the Diamondbacks. Look, you win a series against a rival opponent going into the All Star Break, it's huge because now all of a sudden, you're a couple games over five hundred. Maybe you're not gonna sell. Maybe Gallon's not gonna go anywhere. They lose Gallon's Gallon like tonight, if he if he has another man outing, his value goes down and the team's opportunity to sell somebody. So it's like, yeah, you win, maybe you don't sell them, you lose. Now he's not doing as well, so he's not as valuable. It's it's a tough spot that they're in. Mike Hayson's gonna make his money this this this trade deadline.

00:48:11
Speaker 1: AJ do we care about Rangers and Angels? I know, I mean those teams don't look great, but it's a decent pitching matchup. You have Jacob de garm going for the Rangers. You also have you say, Kakuchi going for the Angels. He's got some all star credentials. I mean, are we paying attention to that one at all?

00:48:25
Speaker 2: I am, because I have it's part of my locks.

00:48:28
Speaker 1: Well, sure, let's your Jacob de gram on the strikeouts over. I get that.

00:48:32
Speaker 3: Just no, I am.

Speaker 2: Because the Rangers have been a confusing team. The Angels have been better than I think when everyone thought they would be. But the Rangers have been a confusing team or the enit or the out of it. What are they going to do? Much like the Diamondbacks. So they is Christian I'm going to make trades? Is he going to keep guys? And to Grom's having a great, great year, So he's always fun with Jacob g Graam takes them out, no doubt.

00:48:51
Speaker 1: When he's healthy, it's been He's one of the most fun pitchers to watch. Yeah, that one at Angels Stadium tonight, the gram nine and two guys with the two to one three you say Kakuchi three and six with an Eri also south of three, he's at two point eight one. All right, So Eric already talked about Diamondbacks and the Pottery's. We've discussed Phillies in San Francisco, Cleveland and the Astros. The Astros, my god, every year it's like, well, they don't have this guy. They don't have this guy. They lost Brugman, they lost Tucker, and here they are at the top of the division again. They got Tanner Biby going up against Colton Gordon tonight. In that game. What are we watching for, Eric.

00:49:26
Speaker 3: I mean two of the I guess of the Blue Jays played the Guardians. There would be the two of the most polar opposite Guardians lost ten straight. Yeah, like the Astros just came off of beating Alana's Dodgers. To me, I'm not really watching it. I think it's gonna be the Astros. The Guardians are not scoring. They thought they were gonna win yesterday against Scooball because they scored a run. And then it was this bullpen that was otherworldly last year, and they up some runs, but it didn't matter even if they gave up one run. I think Smith came out in case. Smith came in and it was like he gave up ended up giving up like four or five, but he gives up one and it's a two to one game. They're not hitting. Where did their hitting go from last year? I know they were bullpen heavy last year, but they have to hit and they have to figure out how to develop their hitting because they bought Carlos Santana this year and he looks like somebody that's gonna be traded at the trade deadline.

00:50:32
Speaker 1: Yeah, I agree with you. The Guardians did so well last year. Steven Vote obviously was an the American League Manager of the Year last year, and this has been a team that certainly struggled. Guys, don't forget after today's Dodgers territory, catch up on your team's prospects with Baseball America's Hot Sheet, and get the best breakdowns from Trevor on May Day. But before we say goodbye, we're running out of time here, a G. I definitely want you to be able to talk about Bobby Jenks. I know he's a good friend of yours. He was obviously a huge piece to that two thousand and five World Series team with the Chicago White Socks. Unfortunately passed away far too young. But please go ahead and talk about him.

00:51:09
Speaker 2: Well, you know, this weekend was tough for White Sox family, losing Bobby a battle that we kind of knew was coming. He was diagnosed with stage four stomach cancer, passed away, and yesterday was his twentieth reunion of him making his major league debut. So just an awful, awful thing. Cancer sucks. F cancer, and Bobby, we miss you, we love you. It's not gonna be the same. We have our twenty year reunion this year, this weekend in Chicago, It's not going to be the same without you there, seeing your family, and and you know, just the whole that's in our hearts and the whole that will be there by Bobby's presence not being there. This kid was He was a gigantic kid, but he was like a ten year old in his heart and he was fine, always pulling pranks, and he really grew up, fought some demons, grew up and became a better man because of it was managing independent league and if you talk to people there, they say what a great manager he was because of his love of the game and how much he learned to treat people the right way and pass on his knowledge of baseball. So Bobby, we love you, we miss you. There's nothing I can say that'll make up for your loss to his family, but just know that we're praying for you, and all the White Sox fans are behind you and we'll see you down the road. Brother.

00:52:26
Speaker 1: Yeah, Bobby James gone way too soon at the young age of forty four. Huge piece. As I mentioned to that two thousand and five World Series Championship team. Appreciate the thoughts and the words, a j. I know it's very difficult for you, certainly difficult for White Sox Nation. Guys. It's been a pleasure of being on the show with you today. Scott Brown, of course is back tomorrow. On Foul Territory. Don't forget. Dodger's territory is next with myself and Clint Pisias, and then you can catch everything with a Baseball America on hot sheets. So for AJ Pierzynski crats our entire Foul Territory crew, I'm Alanaizzo. We'll see you next time.
