00:00:00 Speaker 1: You are listening to the Dan Patrick Show on Fox Sports Radio. 00:00:04 Speaker 2: Our good buddy Seth Greenberg for the Mothership. How did we get there with this big twelve floor? And why are we just realizing that the players aren't comfortable on it? 00:00:16 Speaker 3: Brett Yormac is obviously thinking outside the box, thinking commissioner. 00:00:21 Speaker 4: I mean, think about it. 00:00:22 Speaker 3: Brett Ormac, so far outside the box. The PAC twelve no longer exists. That's how he thinks big picture. He thinks marketing, he thinks branding, he thinks, you know, creating an image for his organization. The floor had been used before, but the players are not used to that floor. Obviously, this surface was slippery to play the biggest games in those kids' careers. In terms of trying to play the way into the NCAA tournament and win a championship, probably wasn't the greatest decision, But I also give him a lot of product to have the agility to say, you know what, this isn't working, this isn't the welfare of our players, our. 00:00:59 Speaker 4: Organization, our league. It's not a good look. 00:01:02 Speaker 3: And to be able to pivot and show the agility to move on and go back to the wood court of court that players are used to playing on, which I think that's the biggest thing. You play your whole It's like changing the ball. You can't change the ball. 00:01:15 Speaker 4: Every year, you know, you got to. 00:01:17 Speaker 3: You get used to a ball that you're playing with during the cross of the season. So I give them a lot of credit for the ingenuity of trying it. I also give them a lot of credit for the agility to say, you know what, this isn't working for us. 00:01:29 Speaker 4: We need to change. 00:01:30 Speaker 2: And I know it's the future. We've seen a lot of these universities where they bring out their own court, but I think illuminating and what somebody with the NBA said, it's going to resemble a pinball machine. Those are the words, and that was back during COVID. We haven't seen that yet, but I do think that's on the horizon. Let me give you the full introduction. Seth Greenberg on ESPN all weekend long, College Game Day, Big Twelve Championship, then College Basketball Live Sunday at noon ahead of the SEC Championship. Sports Center Bracketology Sunday night from Nashville after the brackets are revealed. Miami, Ohio losing yesterday means what seth. 00:02:13 Speaker 3: They're in a playing game, they're in the incident my tournament. You know, it is really hard to do what they did. Only three other schools ever done it, Kentucky which tes State now then and if you go further back, you know you're talking about the old Saint Joe's team that lost in the first round of That team was ended up a number one seed. 00:02:29 Speaker 4: But it's hard to do what they were able to do. 00:02:31 Speaker 3: Their resume says they're not one of the thirty seven best teams, but their accomplishment says they are. And to do what they were able to do in a conference, as you know, Dan, at such a level playing field the MAC I mean like same budgets, everyone's in a bus, Every game's a grind. The Arenas have great ownership. I think you've got to reward the accomplishment. I'm not saying their resume says it, but I think that they deserve an opportunity, and I think they're playing to play. 00:03:01 Speaker 2: But they're going to give them a playing game that will be a home game for them. It's going to be in Dayton Date not very far yeah, not very far drive from Oxburn, Ohio. What do you make of Bruce Pearl's criticisms. 00:03:15 Speaker 4: You know, he's kind of walked that back a little bit. 00:03:17 Speaker 3: You know, Bruce, I love him to death, but we also know he has a little bit of an agenda and me his son is right on that bubble. He wants to see his son get the Ana Tournament. There's been a lot of focus on their struggles. Bruce Pearl kind of and I love him to death and he's a dear friend, but he kind of screwed his own son because when he left and then the segularly left with at a totally new roster, and they weren't going to be last few years. 00:03:41 Speaker 4: Offer teams. 00:03:42 Speaker 3: You don't lose, Jani Broom, you don't lose the players that they let lost. And then all of a sudden, handed to your son, say h hey, go ahead and go ahead and win twenty games, Go go to the Sweet sixteen, go to the Elite eight. You know, he had no chance to really win. Steven is going to be a good coach, he really is. He's passionate, he cares about it. They've got to recruit some guys, but he was out a difficult hand. Bruce, on the other hand, he's got to stay out of the way. And then here I'm talking about a friend like yesterday, his whole thing on the sidelines, you screaming at someone stay out of the way. You're not the story. Auburn's the story. Your son's the story. Support your son by helping him recruit at the appropriate time, But you cannot be front and center and become the story. The story's got to be Auburn's team, and the guy that's coaching them now just happens to be your son. 00:04:31 Speaker 5: Yeah. 00:04:31 Speaker 2: I was disappointed watching Bruce. I mean, you know this goes back to parents ruined sports because they get so involved, so vocal. You know, he should just be sitting there quietly, maybe the way John Wooden used to when he retired as UCLA's basketball coach. He just sat there and watched the game. How many heavyweights do we have? Is college basketball top heavy in this year's tournament? 00:04:57 Speaker 5: Yeah? 00:04:58 Speaker 4: I think they are about seventeens, seven or eight teams that can win it all. 00:05:01 Speaker 3: I mean pay for player at nil or whatever you want to call it, revshare it's and the transfer port together. Look, it's been combustible. It's really hurting the mid majors. It's just the way the way it is. It's it's the cause of doing the business. So like the bubble, people say the bubble stinks, the bubble doesn't stink because there's parody within the bubble. So the i'm majors, more good players are spread out through the landscape and college basketball, so they're more good teams. 00:05:28 Speaker 4: And then there are a few great teams. 00:05:29 Speaker 3: But what it's done is Tilford all the really good players from the mid majors, not. 00:05:34 Speaker 4: All of them, but most of them. 00:05:35 Speaker 3: So we've got a logjam of these teams that are beating each other up in the league and acc the SEC, the Big twelve. 00:05:42 Speaker 4: The Big Ten. Then you've got a couple that have separated themselves. 00:05:45 Speaker 3: Michigan separated themselves, Duke until the injury the other day separated themselves, Varna has separated themselves. So you've got those Arizonas separated themselves. Then you've got the next year that are very good because they've read the right players and filled them with voids. And then you've got a lot of teams that are just you know, they're good enough to beat anyone, but they're bad enough to lose anyone. 00:06:09 Speaker 4: And that's what we've what we've come to. 00:06:11 Speaker 3: It's kind of I don't know, is it a lot like the NFL where they wanted parody, then they got more parody, and all of a sudden they complained about parody. 00:06:21 Speaker 2: I'm wondering about these budgets. Jim Beheim was saying, you know, Syracuse, you know it's it's no surprise the top teams in the ACC they spent the most money, and Syracuse and some of these other schools did not. What is the budget for a great or a good, good major college team? We know what it is. In college football, they're approaching forty million dollars? Are we at twenty million? For the top end schools? In basketball? 00:06:51 Speaker 4: Last year it was around around twelve. 00:06:52 Speaker 3: Now Kentucky spent twenty two, but last year it was around twelve. But if you think about three years ago, it was four billion, right, three years later it's twelve. It's you know, like it seems like it's dublin. Now you say, well, how is that possible? I mean, the total amount of repsure money is twenty point five million, right, I mean, I think that's the number. Allegedly people are supposed to be working on. Look, there's no guard rails, there's no rules. Everyone's going to find a way to circumvent these things. They're gonna find collectives, They're gonna find real nil deals within their communities that they can justify. That's just the way it is. Eventually, the Power fives are gonna break off. We're still going to be n CNAA tournament, but it's gonna be even more of the haves and have Now it's I think like the sixteen bottom Division I schools will be the opening round. That's my thing, and they'll play their way into the main bracket, so you'll get the best of the one big leagues in the field. 00:07:47 Speaker 4: But if you're an athletic department and you're spending. 00:07:49 Speaker 3: These millions and millions and millions of dollars, you know. 00:07:54 Speaker 4: Here's the deal. 00:07:55 Speaker 3: You want to return on the investment, and that's playing in the n CNAA tournament, that's playing in the the college football playoffs. You can't spend all that money and not get a return. Then all of a sudden, you know, there's dono fatigue. I mean, that's just the way it is. There's doni fatigue. It is real, and like it's great that there are a few programs that have these monster boosters, but not everyone has them. So you know, eventually, I think they're gonna be breakoff and we're gonna semi more more than we're doing now professionalize polity athletics. 00:08:27 Speaker 2: Your favorite NBA prospect in the tournament is. 00:08:29 Speaker 3: Who the up side is Darren Peterson. In real life, it's it's a Cuffer or or de Bansa and Kevin Wilson would have been in that conversation until they broke his hand. But a Cuff is really very's ay, Couff is really good. He plays at his own pace. Reminds me of Damian Lillard. Uh De Bands, reminds me tracing me Grady. Those guys are just different. Like the one thing I like about those two guys there every day guys. They're every day just you know, And I'm not saying Peterson is like Peterson's struggling out fitting with his team because he hasn't been with his team. The guy's a ridiculous talent because, as you know, the one thing you have to do in the NBA is. 00:09:08 Speaker 4: Make shots, and that dude can make shots. 00:09:14 Speaker 2: Yeah, I've watched him, but I mean, there's buyer beware because I don't know if he loves playing. Uh, Debanza is every night that dude brings it, as you said, yes, and that's what I want. I want somebody. You know, some guys are really good, but that doesn't mean that they really love playing. They're just really good at it. And that's the thing with Peterson and Bill self. I'm still trying to figure out, and maybe he's still trying to figure out. You know, where are we going with this. I've only got a couple more games with this kid anyway, but I'd just be nervous that I just don't know if he's somebody who is a gym rat who really wants to be great. He might just be a really talented player. 00:09:58 Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, he is really talented, and yeah, time will tell. I mean, it's the first time he's ever dealt with injuries, but he is really talented. And the dude makes buckets and I'm. 00:10:08 Speaker 4: Interested to secuse. 00:10:09 Speaker 3: I think if he's really engaged and he figures out when to be selectively aggressive, but they play with him, not to him, and through him, I really believe Kansas can make a run. 00:10:19 Speaker 4: We'll see. 00:10:21 Speaker 2: Yeah, I like that you know, playing through him or to him, because sometimes you acquiesced to a star instead of he needs to blend into what you're doing. It feels like he's in there. Bill self is going out to how do we, you know, make you happy? How do we bring you, know you into our system or do we have to play your kind of system? Do you have any problems with the eighty three points that Bam Autebio scored and how he scored. 00:10:51 Speaker 3: Look, it's not what Kobe did, but it's an incredible accomplishment and I like it for Bam and I got to run right after this, but I like it for Bam. 00:10:59 Speaker 4: For this reason. 00:11:00 Speaker 3: Bam is an everyday dude, like Vam's a guy. Vam's a guy that you can just havet on. He's a blue collar grind it out, compete every day all about the team, works as rear end Off, plays as hard as anyone. To me, I'm good with Bam because I know what he stands for and I'm like his growth as a player has been incredible, and I'm happy for the dude. 00:11:25 Speaker 2: I know you got to run. We'll talk to you next week. Thank you, So you got it. He is the man who is the second most points in NBA history in a game. Bam, out of bio joining us on the program, Bam, thanks for joining us. What part of your body hurt the most after the eighty three point game? 00:13:00 Speaker 8: Oh, the arms for sure, the shoulder. 00:13:06 Speaker 2: From shooting. Yes, you got to ice down the shoulder like a pitcher does after you know, throwing seven innings. 00:13:16 Speaker 5: Yeah, I had to get in the ice bath. 00:13:17 Speaker 2: And really, Uh, what did you think pre game? Did you think anything pre game differently than any other game you've had in your career? 00:13:29 Speaker 8: Uh? 00:13:30 Speaker 5: I knew we needed to win that game. 00:13:34 Speaker 8: Because we've we've been in this playing situation for the last three four years, and going into the game, you know, we got most of our starters out Andrew Wiggins, Norman Powell, Tyler, hero khalil Ware, so it's only two starters in our bench mob basically, and we know how those games can get because with the Miami Heat, we've beaten the number one teams in both conferences, but we've also lost to both of the worst teams in both conferences, So you can see how that game can be tricky. 00:14:14 Speaker 5: For us and we just needed to win. 00:14:21 Speaker 2: Why does it feel like people want you to apologize for scoring eighty three points? 00:14:30 Speaker 5: Probably because I wasn't part of the agenda. 00:14:34 Speaker 8: You know, it wasn't it shocked the world because it wasn't somebody who they glorify as a score, as somebody who can get that record. And I feel like that's what shook the world. And also they're gonna say that I shot X amount of free throws. 00:14:57 Speaker 2: But once you realized that they were going to foul you, that that became the offense. You're just like, they're gonna found me, so I'm I'm going to take advantage of this. 00:15:09 Speaker 8: It wasn't even they were gonna fil me. It was more so like I'm being aggressive. I'm trying to get I'm trying to I'm trying to score buckets. That's what I'm trying to. I'm trying to get buckets. It's not uh And they just kept filing me. Like I said, there were no other of my starters out there, so it was just me. 00:15:35 Speaker 2: When you got to eighty one, what were you thinking, I gotta. 00:15:40 Speaker 8: Make these next supre throws because if I'm missing myself. 00:15:46 Speaker 2: But no thought of Kobe, who was one of your idols. Did you ever think of stopping at eighty one? 00:15:54 Speaker 8: No, because I know if it was the other way around, Kobe would have been like shooting or whatever. I And to be in that conversation as your idol is what to me makes it. It gives me one of those things where I'm appreciative of it because it's my idol. It's somebody who I grew up watching the game like I grew up watching him, like understanding what he's still for. And that man was he will tell you I'm chasing Jordan, whatever record he's trying to get, I'm trying to break it. Uh. 00:16:39 Speaker 5: And obviously you know I got the opportunity to do that. 00:16:45 Speaker 2: And I think because people love Kobe so much, that bothered them more that who were you to do that to our Kobe? And here he is your idol, and I just and you're right, there's no way Kobe you would say, hey, you got to eighty one. Stop, He'd be like, no, keep going, go for ninety if you can. I mean, that was his mentality exactly. 00:17:11 Speaker 8: And like I said, if the dead could talk, I would I firmly believe he'd be like, congratulations, young fella, Like you did something I thought nobody could could even reach for the next forty fifty years. 00:17:31 Speaker 2: Do you remember the first time you met Kobe? 00:17:34 Speaker 5: Never met him? That is the other thing, never met him. Never met him. Oh that is. 00:17:42 Speaker 8: That is another reason why it's so special to me because I never got to meet him. Like the one time I thought I was gonna meet him was it was my first All Star. I was like, if I make All Star this year, I might get to meet Kobe. And obviously the tragedy happened, and I remember where I was. I remember just sitting there and just started crying because I was like. 00:18:08 Speaker 5: I was like, bro, Like. 00:18:11 Speaker 8: You know, from a from player standpoint, you know how we all appreciate that man for what he's done for the game, for what he's done for people's mentality to him creating a mama mentality was like keep pushing forward. So I was heartbroken because I was like, I really wanted to meet my idol. 00:18:33 Speaker 5: At some point. 00:18:35 Speaker 2: Talking to Bam out of bio fresh off of eighty three point per port, well, I mean last night you only got twenty one. I mean what happened? 00:18:48 Speaker 8: Trying to figure out how you can redoce something like that. 00:18:54 Speaker 5: That's hard to it's hard to keep up. 00:18:57 Speaker 8: And nobody talks about the next game because it's funny because when I go back and look at what he did afterwards, he also had. 00:19:07 Speaker 5: The same type of game, Like it was like it wasn't eighty. 00:19:09 Speaker 2: One, Yeah you had thirty. How important was it to have your mom there. 00:19:19 Speaker 8: Man, to have my mom there, to have my people there, to do it at home in front of our home crowd. 00:19:29 Speaker 5: It's a moment none of us will ever forget. 00:19:32 Speaker 8: And to be there, to be in the building, to have my mom there, like I said, like she's my pride and Doug, a lot of this I do for her and for her to you know, see that her son put itself in history. I know she's full of joy and that's something she'll always talk about. 00:19:56 Speaker 2: What does your girlfriend do better than you on the basketball floor? 00:20:00 Speaker 5: Wilson everything everything? You know, she can do literally anything. 00:20:11 Speaker 8: And also having her in the building was special because she was mad because I got my ten thousand points while she was on her tour and obviously to do that while she's sitting courtse I was. 00:20:24 Speaker 5: It was a special moment for us. 00:20:27 Speaker 2: I think her career high's fifty three. 00:20:31 Speaker 5: That's a lot of buckets still. 00:20:34 Speaker 2: But let's be honest. I think I could get I think I get ten points off the Wizards. 00:20:40 Speaker 5: Oh listen, Like I said, everybody wants to be mad at me. 00:20:47 Speaker 8: Bed be mad at their coach for not doubling me when I had thirty. 00:20:53 Speaker 5: In a quarter. 00:20:56 Speaker 7: You know my. 00:20:58 Speaker 2: Problem with this? And I keep telling people in my audience, you had sixty after three quarters, nobody was complaining about how you were playing or they were playing. Then all of a sudden, it's like, oh, you know, he's embarrassing or they're embarrassing the game. I said, what happened the first three quarters when you put up what sixty four points? I mean, that's what people have to you know, let's look at the entire game, not just the last five minutes where it got a little silly or got out of hand. 00:21:27 Speaker 5: How do you respond? 00:21:28 Speaker 8: So and also their coach started filing my teammates, so I couldn't I couldn't shoot free throws. So it wasn't like it was just like all the Miami Heat are just shitt in the game away. 00:21:43 Speaker 5: That's not what it was. 00:21:44 Speaker 8: It was also them being like, in order for Bam not to get this record, we're just going to file his other teammates when they touched the ball. That's unethical basketball. To me, It's like whatever y'all want to call it. 00:21:57 Speaker 5: Uh, but yeah, people, we're gonna try. 00:22:01 Speaker 8: What I did out there was special to me and everybody who knows, like how hard I work behind the scenes, like to see me put on that type of performance. 00:22:13 Speaker 5: To have sixty four and three quarters is insane. 00:22:17 Speaker 8: And the thing that people forget, like they cut the lead to like eleven in the fourth quarter, So it wasn't like we were up thirty the whole quarter where everybody's just saying, oh, they were up thirty. No, they cut the lead to like thirteen to eleven at one point in the fourth quarter. So I had to play. And because nobody watches us until that moment, we've had twenty point leads in the fourth quarter and lost the game. 00:22:47 Speaker 5: What do y'all want us to do? 00:22:52 Speaker 2: The uniform go to the Hall of Fame? 00:22:55 Speaker 7: Uh? 00:22:56 Speaker 5: Not yet It's on the way, though it hasn't got there. 00:23:00 Speaker 2: It wait, what are you? What are you waiting for? 00:23:04 Speaker 8: I mean, I got I gotta ship it, man, I mean, what you want me to do? 00:23:10 Speaker 5: You still got like. 00:23:14 Speaker 2: You can. That's not a big deal. You got people, You got people who have people who can do this for you. 00:23:19 Speaker 5: Don't give it back, right right, It's just a special moment. 00:23:24 Speaker 2: By the way, I have Kobe autograph Jersey, and I have your autograph Jersey. Right yeah, yeah, yep, even yours. What you didn't know if I knew who you were? 00:23:43 Speaker 5: Yeah, man, you know that's this. 00:23:46 Speaker 2: Bam. I'm a baller. 00:23:49 Speaker 5: So what's your career? 00:23:50 Speaker 2: Dame thirty six? 00:23:55 Speaker 5: Listen, it's a lot of people. I credit that. 00:23:58 Speaker 8: It's a lot of people that's not score thirty six before. 00:24:02 Speaker 2: But that was before the three point shots. So let's tackle on fourteen more so, probably a fifty burger. 00:24:10 Speaker 5: I respect it. 00:24:11 Speaker 2: I'm kind of I was kind of like Tyler Hero before Tyler Hero. 00:24:16 Speaker 5: M Oh, you were a bucket getter. Huh. 00:24:20 Speaker 2: Yep that's what I was. Yep, that's what the ladies called me. Bucket getter. 00:24:25 Speaker 5: Bucket getter. Iright. 00:24:26 Speaker 2: Okay, Dad, don't leave me open, man, That's all I'm gonna say. Do not leave me open. Problem is I couldn't get open. But if you did leave me open. I was gonna make it. I'm not going to pass. I'm not playing defense. I'm just letting you know. 00:24:43 Speaker 5: Okay, okay, just like Tyler. 00:24:49 Speaker 2: Yes, that's it. That's all I'm gonna do. How mad is Tyler hero? That you got the record and you know that seemed like he would be a guy who would be able to get eighty three. 00:25:00 Speaker 8: He's going to be upset, honestly, man, I think all my teammates was happy for me because, like I said, performance is that we as the Miami he haven't seen like as much as we want to talk about all the greats that's been there, Like it was something that like people weren't prepared for. Yeah, and that's why I think a lot of like I said, I think a lot of people are shocked by it because I wasn't the quote unquote anointed one where it was like he can be the one to do it. 00:25:39 Speaker 2: By the way you play the Wizard April fourth, I. 00:25:46 Speaker 8: Probably will get trouble team when I touched the ball, I probably I probably would happen. 00:25:54 Speaker 2: You know what, You could get fifty against the Wizards the next time and it might be a subpar performs. 00:26:01 Speaker 8: Yeah, people are gonna call me trash if I get fifty. 00:26:06 Speaker 2: Proud, man, I be proud. You have every right to be proud. And uh, it's an incredible performance. And I don't care who you surpassed. You still put up eighty three and you're right. Kobe'd probably say, you go, man, you go. Don't stop at eighty three. But congrats. 00:26:27 Speaker 5: I appreciate that. Damn man. 00:26:29 Speaker 8: Congrats on your thirty six too, with no three point line. Three point line is a lot of butts. Yeah, that's that's tough. 00:26:40 Speaker 2: A thirty two minute game, so I'm basically at more than a point a minute. 00:26:47 Speaker 8: Listen, You're in the history books, Dan, Listen. 00:26:50 Speaker 5: I'm rooting for you. 00:26:52 Speaker 2: You're in the history. This is about you. It's not about me any other day, any other week, it's about me. This this is about you. But uh, congratulations us, thank. 00:27:09 Speaker 5: You, bam, thank you. 00:27:12 Speaker 2: That's a bam out of bio. 00:27:13 Speaker 1: Fox Sports Radio has the best sports talk lineup in the nation. Catch all of our shows at foxsports Radio dot com and within the iHeartRadio app search FSR to listen live. 00:27:25 Speaker 2: Sit back and relax, which is what we thought Jim Beyheim was going to be doing in retirement, lo and behold part of the ACC Network covering the ACC tournament. Coach, good to see you again. Look at you a little tan there, look well rested. 00:27:40 Speaker 7: Yeah, that's left makeup, leftover makeup. And also I was home retired for a week and Julie said, no, no, you need to get a job one week. I mean I needed a week. 00:27:55 Speaker 8: Uh. 00:27:56 Speaker 2: We just had Bam out of bio on after scoreing eighty three. Whoever you make of that performance, Yeah, I mean he's. 00:28:04 Speaker 7: A really good player, probably one of the not in the top fifty to ever score eighty three points. But you know, you get things going. These are these are all great players up there, and you know, I'm convinced that the joke it's you know, he gets forty with fifteen assists. I mean if he wanted to score or eighty, I think he could. I think maybe Shay could. But you know those guys they do other stuff too. I mean it's great to see that. Those performances are great to see. I remember watching Kobe get the eighty three and think, as wow. 00:28:39 Speaker 2: That housekeeping, that housekeeping. 00:28:42 Speaker 7: I forgot to do that, the urb sign and you know that doc on door A little bit is extra. It's a little extra for our show here, you know, we get an extra. 00:28:52 Speaker 2: Yeah, got about a twenty second time out. You could tell her to come back. 00:28:57 Speaker 7: Shoot, they went away, They're gonna they're good. 00:29:01 Speaker 5: How much? 00:29:01 Speaker 2: I mean, like did Carmelo have. 00:29:05 Speaker 7: You know, pretty much whatever? He would not take bad shots, so he pretty much had it. Jerry McNamara pretty much had it. The guys that can really shoot, you want him to shoot. You want them to feel comfortable shooting. I think that's one thing with Patino does as being the great coach he is. He gives his players the freedom to play offense. You want them to have that freedom. Not everybody can get that freedom, but the guys that should and usually the players on the team know that anyway. Except that, but yeah, I come Ol could shoot when he as long as he was on the court, he could shoot. Yeah, someplace. 00:29:42 Speaker 2: Speaking of Jerry McNamara, you're going to campaign for him to take over at Syracuse. 00:29:48 Speaker 7: Well, i'm not the athletic We have a new athletic director who I think is really good and I think he'll make a good decision. I think it's a good job. I think there's good candidates. Jerry went from four to twenty eight programsc er to the NCAA Tournament in the second year with two of his best players out for the year. So I mean, yeah, he's a candidate for any job in the country. But that's up to the athletic director. And I do have a little office there. It's not it's kind of hidd in someplace candidates to the closet, but I hope he'll get consideration. They'll come up with the best candidate. It doesn't have to be a Syracuse guy or a non Syracuse guy. It has to be who's the best. Who's the best coach that can help us And obviously Agrin, you know, did as good a job as good. I mean, you have to have NIOL money. If you look at the ACC or any league in the country, the top four teams have the most NIO money. That's and they're good coaches too, but they have NIO money and you have to get there in this day and age. I don't think he'll change anytime soon, but that's the bottom line. Syracuse shall get a really good basketball coach. 00:30:59 Speaker 5: I believe. 00:31:01 Speaker 2: What kind of money do you need to compete at the top of the ACC? 00:31:06 Speaker 7: Ten million ten million basketball is great. I mean you could do it with eight or something maybe if you get lucky. Also, you could have ten and not do it. There's programs that have ten and don't do it. There's programs that have spent fifteen or twenty and are not doing well. I mean, you still got to coach, you still got to get the right players. Indiana is the greatest example, Indiana football of you know, a great coach getting the right guys, not all four stars, but you know, good players and get them into a system. Vanderbilt basketball, same thing, did a great job this year. And it's they got the money, they have a good coach. It's it can be done, and it can The good thing about you do it in one year. And you know, everybody criticizes the portal, and obviously there's a lot not to like about the portaland and il, but there's forty Europeans over here or a really good player is because of NIL. There's forty seniors that are staying in college because of NIL. So you look at the product out there, it's good basketball. This is the best basketball has been in a while, really since the portal opened, when it was all guys leaving early. Guys aren't leaving early anymore because they know they're they're not going to get the chance of being the G League or something. So that helped college basketball. It'd be better if we get to the point we have a salary cap, we have contracts, and you know all that stuff that's going to happen, you know, and you need some kind of cap. They have it in the pro leagues, and we're a pro league. It's prost pro best. We're pro football. College is pro sports. I mean I'm hearing soccer players, a volleyball player got three hundred thousand dollars someplace. Who where did we you know? In the beginning, we thought that that would be the total amount of money your whole team would get maybe a couple hundred thousand. But obviously when you get boosters invout, they want to win, and the boosters with big money, it's it's a drop in the bucket for some of them. So we are where we're at. But we got a great game as far as on the court, I mean, Florida State gave Duke everything they wanted last night. Probably could have won easily or not easily, but they could have won and you know, we had a great game in North Carolina coming back, and you know, I mean, we've had great games in the tournament, and I think that's a reflection of what's going to happen in the NCAA tournament. And by the way, miam Ohio has got to. 00:33:30 Speaker 5: Be in the tournament. 00:33:31 Speaker 7: I mean, the people that are talking about that are just crazy. No, they wouldn't be at the top of a conference, but they could be in the mix in a conference. But that's not the point. They won thirty one straight games. I saw them play eight times. I doubt if there's any coach or any pundit out there who saw Miam Gohaw play eight times and they have a good team. Are they going to beat Florida? No, I mean they're not beating floor. Those days are over. That good mid major school is not going to the Final four unless something just crazy happens. The teams at the top are just they're just too good. 00:34:11 Speaker 2: Talking to Jim Beheim, of course, hall of famer, and he's working with the ACC Network, the role of a coach now compared to ten years ago. 00:34:21 Speaker 7: Well it's completely different. You have to recruit the players and you have to figure out your salary structure, how much money you have for each player, and who you can get, who you can't get, and some of that's a guessing game. Agents will tell you this, my player's worth a million dollars. He can get a million dollars over here. Well he can't. 00:34:44 Speaker 2: I mean, but you. 00:34:45 Speaker 7: Don't know that, you know. So you have to kind of guess and plan, and then once you get your team, the good news is you have summers now to kind of get them ready, so you can get a completely new group ready. You know, Ryan Oldham was Virginia all new players. They're in the top ten fifteen in the country. Arizona mostly all new play, not all, but mostly new. We look around the Michigan mostly all new. So yeah, you could put a team together. And I laugh a little bit when fans sometimes say, well, I don't know the players, so I don't know if I like that. Well, if the players come in at whatever scow and win, the. 00:35:26 Speaker 5: Fans will like the team. 00:35:28 Speaker 7: You know, Virginia's fans were all here, you know, why are they? They didn't know any of these guys last year, but they're winning. In sports, Dan, as you know, in broadcasting, you win, you keep your job, and you know, that's the bottom line, and fans will come to games. 00:35:44 Speaker 5: If you win. 00:35:45 Speaker 7: But yeah, and that's where we are in college basketball. And you know, but we need to get some structure. But a coach has to make sure he can do that. And then obviously he's got to put your team together. And coaches can do that. I mean, we used to have a couple veterans returning, but some years we only had one or two veterans and three or four new players. I got lucky and won the national championship with two freshmen being the two best players on the team. Now freshmen can't except for that rare ten. This is an unbelievable freshman class. But a normal freshman class, there's probably five or six guys that could really help right away. The rest are not ready to go against seniors, so transfer portal seniors. But this freshman class is I don't rate them that much. I don't scud but it's got to be as good as any I can remember in terms of talent. I mean, it's an incredible class. 00:36:44 Speaker 2: You still in favor of expanding the tournament to ninety six teams. 00:36:47 Speaker 7: I'll just explain this one more time, it doesn't happen ninety six. But we can go to another two sites like Dayton, go to two more sites and you get done the same time frame, and you can have the teams playing closer to home. 00:37:00 Speaker 5: And you have to. 00:37:01 Speaker 7: Remember there's two things that are important. Number One, we don't have the best sixty eight teams in the field, all right. We have automatic qualifiers who are not in the best sixty eight in the country. So you're leaving out teams in the top fifty or so in the country with the system we have. Now, I'm not saying those teams shouldn't be in. They should. Let's let's let them go. They're not going to win anymore, but let them in. But you add six, eight, ten, whatever number it is. You make ten or twelve fan bases happy, you make fifty to twelve players happy, and you make coaches securing their job if they're in the NCAA tournament, whether it's expanded or not. And unless you're at a couple of places, but you're in the tournament, and what have you lost? After one week? You have a better field than you had before because the weaker teams are all going to be out. The better teams are going to be in and you haven't diluted the tournament. Made the tournament better because you have better teams in the tournament and more players and more fans and more coaches are in the tournament. What's to not like about that? Hey? I remember John Wooden is a great coach, a great man. He wanted the tournament to stay at twenty four, and he knew what he was doing, right, But they went to forty eight. Tournament got better, right, the tournament went sixty four. Tournament got better, right, tournament's a sixty eight. Tournament's still getting better. It's not going to get worse. And you're going to add teams players who are good. I mean we got in one year. We were probably the last team in. We could have been the first team out easily. We went to the final four. So there are teams that are going to get left out that could get going. I mean, Florida State's not going to get in the tournam they don't deserve it, but if they played a little better earlier, they can be. Their coach said it, we can beat anybody in the country. I think he's right. They really play good. But that's my feelings. I don't think if you really think it through, you can argue that the people that say, oh, we can't expand it, they say, well, it's going to dilute the tournament. No, they say, well, you know, bad teams will get it. No they won't. They'll be good. They won't be great, but they'll be good. And the best teams are still going to win at the end. And I think you have another dating we can't. And you know during the weekend someplace you can watch TV. There is no reason not to have it. And I know almost six seventy percent of the media is against expanding it. Well, so it was still at twenty four and most of those guys wouldn't have a job. 00:39:45 Speaker 2: It's rare when you have make a good point, but you did, and you made a very good point there. 00:39:50 Speaker 7: I haven't made a good point at home in the years, so I'm glad to make a point. 00:39:53 Speaker 2: Here before I let you go. Why isn't Sonny Vaccaro in the Basketball Hall of Fame as a contributor to the game. 00:40:02 Speaker 7: You know, he's an unbelievable contributor at the game, But it's it's not he's not getting all famous. Just there's too much around him. He's a good guy, good man. I know him very well. I was making no money. It's Syracuse, and Nike gave me money, free shoes for all the players, as many as they wanted. We were paying for shoes, free uniforms, free year, free bags. They gave us all that and it helped us. It helped all of us. And one of the reasons I stayed to Syracuse so long is because of Nike and what they did for me. Personally. I didn't have to get as much from the school, but he got that going. 00:40:44 Speaker 5: It was him. 00:40:45 Speaker 7: The movie is pretty good. He did it. He got all these schools, all these coaches, free stuff, money, all that stuff that the schools didn't have to provide. I mean, it's a win win. I remember if somebody asked me, what, don't you feel bad, you know, taking my night? No, like my players love Nike. Now, if the players didn't like the sneakers, that would have been a problem. But they all liked it. They all want to wear Nikes, and we got they got ten pairs. I paid for my second pair of shoes when I played at churches. 00:41:16 Speaker 5: I paid for it. 00:41:17 Speaker 7: Well, I did, My father did you know that's what We got one pair of shoes for the year, and you know that was it. Now the players get all this stuff and who's who wants to argue about that. I mean, I say, Phil Knight of Ring National Championship Rank, and be honest with you, I'm proud to say it. He allowed me to stay at Sercuse. So yeah, I mean study for Carol did a lot of that. I mean it was him, he Phil Knight, let it happen and backed it. But Sonny Pacero did that and he was great with youth basketball getting his Seeing the Nike camp, All American Camp, that's where you saw all these players and you got to recruit nationwide because you didn't have to go to California to see a kid. You can go to wherever Sunny was having his camp. We saw STEVIEE. Thompson there, we saw l ron Ellis, We saw all these guys. So we never recruiting those guys. It wasn't for Sonny v Carol in his camp all the best players in the country. I mean I saw Lebron James play against Carmelo and all these guys in one place on one plane ticket instead of going to thirty different places to see the thirty players I needed to see. I can see them all on one weekend, and so, I mean, he did a lot for the game. I personally think he's a really, really great person who has been great for players and coaches. And there's really no negative with Sonny for me that I've ever seen, and he's had a huge influence on the game of best. Well, it's hard to get in the all. There's so many constituencies that make up to get seven eight guys goes college. I know, I know high school coaches that should be in, you know, Gary, Gary mgnited modern day. I mean there's a number of high school coaches. Herman Harrida played for me. It's one about five state championships in Baltimore. I mean, there's a lot of But you know, there's so many people that have to get in the Hall of Fame, and Jerry Claso has done a great job keeping the Hall of Fame going. We're fortunate to have him and unfortunate because he got me three gold medals in the Olympics along with Mike Skrzhski, which was there's no experience like coaching your national team to an Olympic gold medal. Standing there and here in the national anthem. There is nothing like that. Standing next to Kobe Bryant and Lebron and Wayne Wade, Carmelo and all those guys. That's a feeling you can't get in life normally. 00:44:01 Speaker 2: Have fun at the tournament. My best, your wife, and thanks again for joining as coach. 00:44:06 Speaker 7: Thanks, and you know what, we're still here. It's a miracle we're still here and working, both of us. 00:44:12 Speaker 2: Yeah, well, what's the bigger surprise me or you? 00:44:16 Speaker 7: It's a toss up. It's a tossa I'll give you a little edge. I'll give you a little edge. 00:44:24 Speaker 2: Would you turn eighty eighty one. 00:44:30 Speaker 7: Ticket? The lady said to me, young old lady said, you're not sixty five, are you? I said, no, I'm not sixty five. I'm eighty one. She didn't want to give you a senior discount. 00:44:42 Speaker 2: You could pass for seventy nine I swear you could pass for seventy nine years. 00:44:46 Speaker 7: A flight attendant told me the other day. One was nice and the other one said, well, you don't look over ninety. So it's in the eye of the beholder, you know, that's right. What I feel about it. 00:44:59 Speaker 2: If you want to do abuse, you could have stayed at home. You didn't need to go out and have somebody else. Thank you again, coach. Thanks to that's a Jim bay Hunt.
