And then Kyle Schwarber told our friend of the pod, the Kuala Matt Gel He said, I don't give a hell about the stigma. And the Phillies though, on Wednesday night lost to the Mets. They've lost ten in a row against the Mets at City Field, pretty unbelievable. Their lead in the National League East is now four. The Phillies have now lost the season tiebreaker to the Mets. So if somehow these teams end up in a tie and the final day of the season the Mets when the division, the Phillies are a wild card team, a lot of craziness. Let's jump right into it. There's no question in my mind that the Mets have great confidence they everything they do, whether they're pitching it, catching it, or hitting it. They play with great confidence in their ballpark. Against the Phillies, they believe in their heart of hearts that they're going to win games.

Speaker 1: Only place I ever feel like that's the case. But against the Mets, it's an issue.

Speaker 4: It's a real issue, and whether you want to believe it, it's the It may not necessarily be City Field, but I think it's the uniform that they're playing against, because the Mets have their number.

Speaker 1: And that's the truth. Now, does this matter in the scheme of things down the road. It might. I mean, there was a time when the Atlanta Braves.

Speaker 4: Had the Phillies number the Marlins, and when and the Marlins and the Atlanta Breaks played in the playoffs and the Phillies beat them, and the Phillies had their number in the playoffs, and the same thing with the Marlins.

Speaker 4: Whatever reason, I don't know the reason, I wish I did put my finger on it, but it's pretty clear that the Mets believe that they can beat the Phillies, and the Phillies don't believe that they can beat the Mets. They won't tell you that, but I think that the feeling is that they struggle there, and I think they know it, and it's palpable.

Speaker 1: And it's real and it's good. An adjustment's gonna have to be made.

Speaker 4: They're gonna have to figure out a way to turn that mojo around, because right now, mojo ain't there.

Speaker 3: I thought an adjustment was in the process of being made in game one, when they hold an early lead three nothing, I believe. And you got Christopher Sanchez, who we were just talking about his ascension to close to being in number one and he catches a Spikey balks and he totally unravels. And the next night Lozardo unraveled. I mean, you're starting pitching in this series, so much went wrong, you get swept in three games.

Speaker 5: They got five and a third four and five innings from their starters. Put a lot of pressure on their bullpen.

Speaker 3: But you know, everything with this team has been built around starting pitching, and the starting starting pitching was poor throughout the series.

Speaker 3: They were three for twenty two with runners in scoring position, three for twenty two with runners in scoring position. They only had three runners in scoring position on Wednesday night in the final, and they struck out twenty seven times. This series, with the to me, with the disappearance of the offense, gives all the doubters fodder to say, see, see, that's what's going to happen in October, and that's when they're why they're going to go home early. And that's what has been this team's DNA for years. They can rack up strikeouts over a course of a week that will blow your mind, and they can go totally cold with runners in scoring position and not bring runs home. And and just you know, look awful offensively, and if it rears its head at the wrong time in October, you go home. As it has the last two Octobers, along with the bullpen being shaky in the last two octobers. I mean, this happened in late August. They still have thirty games left something like that to you know, right the ship and getting into October. I'm not worried about them getting into October. They're going to be there. They just have to avoid series like this. And on top of it all, they didn't play good defense, so it was just a terrible, terrible showing up there. But I mean, I do think you have to keep it, you know, in perspective, they're still they got to lead in the division. And it was just a week ago that the Phillies did a similar number on the Seattle Mariners. They just, you know, the Mariners had to go home feeling like they played an awful series in Philadelphia.

Speaker 3: Out there on Thursday night make a good showing against Atlanta.

Speaker 2: This is the type of series that I think should It will scare Phillies fans because not only do they lose the season series now, but you know, the Phillies they have to get that first round by They got to get that first round by.

Speaker 2: Depending on what the Dodgers do on Wednesday night, they could be the third the Phillies could fall to the third seed.

Speaker 2: So if the season ended today and the Phillies are the third seed, they would play the Mets in the wild Card series. Now, those games would be at Citizens Bank Park. Those three games in the best of three series would be at Citizen Bank Park. Nevertheless, though you don't you can't tell me that if that, if they end up playing in the division series and they have to go back to the city field, that that's not gonna be on their minds.

Kyle Schwarber said, nothing fazes us. You know, I'm not worried about it, And I get it. That's what That's what the players and the manager and the front office they're going to say in the moment publicly, but then we then far removed from it, right, They go, yeah, actually, now I'm thinking back to it. At the time, you know, it was definitely in our heads.

Speaker 2: John Crux said it the other day. Rubin, you might remember this. He said ninety three, he said we were scared. Now I'm gonna say scared to death. He says, in ninety three, we were not looking forward to playing the Giants if the Giants uh won the NL West that year, because we could not beat the New York Giants the San Francisco Giants. And I looked it up and he was right. I mean, the Giants absolutely throttled the filly. He's like, you know, ninety three, the two seasons before that, it's like we were we didn't we want to know part of the Giants, so we felt we were much better face chasing, you know, playing the Braves, and so you know, there's and ask the Mets if they didn't feel any pressure going down to stretching O seven when things started and fall apart, you know, those things getting the players team's minds. And I can really rattle rattle these guys, so they want no parts of going up to New York they want again because it's going to be on their minds. It is going to be on their minds.

Speaker 3: Rubens right there. They're just they're just so confident against Phillies. Ventos has not had a good season. He has a great series, you know. They And here's another thing that I think we need to consider. Schwarber has been an MVP candidate all year.

He was spectacular, really good stuff. He gets the ball to move both ways, sharp, sharp slider, sweeper, sharp sinker, great change up hard for four seamer. And he was a two way player at Oklahoma State. Drafted in the third round. I mean, how did he last till the third round?

Speaker 2: The other thing you mentioned, how about confident the Mets are and how they come in with a swagger, and they don't. They look like a team that just knows they're gonna win. I mean, you saw some frustration from the Phillies, most notably from Christopher Sanchez on on Monday, which is who's usually pretty calm and cool on the mound. He kind of absolutely unravels and what was that the sixth inning? Fifth inning? Sixth inning he kind of unraveled. I can't remember what inning that was, but whatever he unraveled in that. Yeah, and then you know he ends up kicking the garbage can and throwing the garbage can down the tunnel. And then you see Alizarda go off on the umpire, which deserved or not?

I'm gonna go yell at an umpire again, deserved or not?

Just out of curiosity? Why did you throw him out? The empire says, well, he told me to wake up. That's where I would have said, well, he's right, you need to wake up. You are having a night and you know they they you know, that's sort of getting booted.

But uh so, somebody in the organization was really like him, because the Phillies almost had a trade for him. The final day Final a couple of days of spring training in twenty twenty two. And the reason I know this it was for Connor Brogden, and Brogden had was banged up like the last week of camp, so I think the deal got put on the shelf. And but if you remember Todd Brogden had didn't throw, and then he was going to throw the last day at camp, and two Oakland A's scouts like parachute into clear water to see any like what are these guys doing here? And then Connor Brogden, you know, all of a sudden appears and throws an inning and the next thing you know, there's no trade. They must not liked what they saw, but somebody liked and that was going to be a trade for Trevino. Brought it in for Trevino and uh and somebody must like him. They finally got him, Yeah, they finally got him.

Speaker 2: Finally got him years later. I mean, you know, that's just the Ross and Romano moves though, or moves that needed to be made. I mean, just not not competitive, even in the mop up situations. You can't you know, if you're going in a game you're down eight nothing, keep it eight nothing, don't make it thirteen, you know, thirteen to nothing. And those guys just weren't able to get done.

Speaker 4: So and he both in the disappointment. Let's call a spade a spade here. They've been in disappointment and they have not pitched. They did not pitch well, and I know that they're holding out some hope that Romano can bounce back and do something.

Speaker 2: Well, I mean, the the fact that both of those guys have failed partly why they had to go out and sign David Robertson to a free agent contract. And in a sense they'd go out and get jowonder On. Maybe they would have gotten a stud closer anyway, they probably would have, but I certainly increased the urgency. And you know, you absolutely had to go out and do it because you weren't getting anybody from a guy that they thought was going to be the closer this season in Romanos. So yeah, so we got that going Braves. Let's wrap it up here with the Braves coming to Citizen Bank Park. The best way guys to make people forget about this series. I think, Jim you might have said at the very beginning of the show, go out and win three out of four from the Braves at Citizens Bank Park this weekend. And then everybody's gonna come down. And then you go to Milwaukee and you can play well against the Brewers. And so Thursday you've got Aaron Nol against Cal Quantrill, who the Brave just picked up recently. It was Craig Counsel eating French toast at five in the morning with his parents after he has just scored the winning run in the World Series, like five or six hours earlier. It was it was really, you know, Neat.
