A rare day where everybody's in Louisville. Ryan drove up here, Shannon is always here, and I'm here today and we don't often end up in this studio in Louisville. Got to see our guy, Paron Johnson, who's now sales guy for iHeart as I think I said when he got hired, didn't tell me. 00:01:15 Speaker 2: I had no idea. 00:01:16 Speaker 5: One of my really good friends walked in here one day, Shannon, and he's just here and I'm like, what are you doing here? I work here. Were you gonna tell me? I thought you were teaching chemistry at Fern Creek. 00:01:27 Speaker 2: It's the last I heard teaching class. 00:01:30 Speaker 4: I thought I was selling bug spray. 00:01:31 Speaker 5: Well, dude, he's had every job. He's sold bug spray, he's been a chemistry teacher, he's he sold COVID test at one point, and now he's selling ads here at iHeart. So it's nice to have him part of the part of the team. 00:01:47 Speaker 2: I had no idea. I said, how when did you start? He goes November? Well, how do we not know this? You know you may make make an announcement. 00:01:53 Speaker 5: It is crazy that like two people I consider really good friends are so close to Louisville with Vince now and pairing. Uh, Like, how does that happen? Because we don't like and the mayor of Louisville. Yeah. 00:02:06 Speaker 4: Yeah, he's a big Louisville fan. 00:02:07 Speaker 5: I think I have more friends at the Louisville side now than the Kentucky throw the L's up, no l's down. You play. They played Duke tonight right here. 00:02:17 Speaker 2: That just down the road in town. 00:02:19 Speaker 5: Who you four? 00:02:21 Speaker 2: Uh, that's a game. I'm probably gonna have to root for Duke Duke. 00:02:25 Speaker 5: But see what I mean, we played Louisville though it's better for our strengthen sched if they win. 00:02:29 Speaker 3: Louisville wins and they need all the help they can get on that right now. 00:02:32 Speaker 5: Well, you know, because their best players out and people aren't sure when he's gonna play. I don't know what the heal brown brown sounds like. 00:02:39 Speaker 3: Your l's up then, if you're goings. 00:02:42 Speaker 5: Up, I'm like, l's to the side. Okay, But I mean I I saw billboard as I was driving down Bartstown Road last night. Actually I walked think about this ship. I walked from my house to l Nepal out there next to the Waterston and back last night. 00:02:57 Speaker 4: Wow, that's a hike. 00:02:59 Speaker 5: That's right. I'm your exercise in shade boy. But on the walk back, I saw a billboard that said come to the Duke game, which says to me, Shannon, they don't think they're gonna sell out that Duke game if they're having billboards saying come to the Duke game. 00:03:14 Speaker 4: I mean, if you got to ask people to come to the Duke. 00:03:15 Speaker 5: I mean, there would have been a time you would not have had to ask to come to the Duke game. 00:03:19 Speaker 2: You're really really good and it's here in your home court. And do you got Duke coming. 00:03:23 Speaker 5: Come to the Duke game? Getting a billboard? Wow? It was kind of. 00:03:28 Speaker 2: Been better though this year, right, Yeah, But I. 00:03:31 Speaker 5: Mean they didn't sell out any game but us, We're the only game they sold out. 00:03:35 Speaker 4: At least he's not handing out flyers like he was last year. Yeah, that's better. At least they get a billboard. 00:03:39 Speaker 5: All right, So there's a lot to get to. I mean, I the Mark Pope Show. I think we could do a whole show on But I actually don't think it's the lead because I think the lead has to be football. Because Kentucky got their new quarterback last night in a little bit of a surprise to people. Kenny Minshi from Notre Dame is going to be the new quarterback at Kentucky. He was committed. I mean, this is the new world. We live it. He entered the portal forty eight hours ago, twenty four hours ago, committed to Nebraska, and then last night flipped us, making Nebraska fans lived, I mean livid. So let's first talk about who he is, all right, because Sam Levitt is gonna end up not here. There are reports that he might decide today for LSU. There are also reports he might visit Miami at this point, who cares not coming here? But Kenny Minschi was the backup at Notre Dame. He was in a quarterback competition at the beginning of the year with the guy who got picked who I think it was, CJ. Carr, and the coach decided on like the last day of practice to pick car said it was the hardest decision he'd ever made in his coaching career. Minshi will have two years of eligibility. He is the number ten ranked quarterback in the portal. Just to give you a basis of comparison, the number twelve ranked quarterback in the portal was Cutter Bowley. Okay, so that's what you're talking about. Yeah, he's ranked tenth in the portal. He is ranked second amongst the quarterbacks who did not start for their team this year. Okay, so the other guys all starters. And I talked to somebody last night about how they do these portal rankings and they said, it's really hard for guys who haven't played. But this dude, I guess I don't remember who was ahead, but this dude they thought had the most potential of the people that hadn't played. My view about it is and I talked about this on ks board Levitt. So the coaching staff felt like this. The coaching staff felt like Levitt was their top choice. He was the number one guy in the portal. They wanted him. But Levitt's brothers are running his recruitment and Levitt's brothers said, hey, we're not ready to decide yet. And Kentucky says, okay, when are you going to decide. We can give you till tomorrow, which was today, and they said, well, it could be tomorrow, but it could be end of the week because we might still go visit Miami. And UK felt like, we just can't wait that long. I think the UK coaching staff felt like there were about ten guys that were really good in this class. They were in on three of the ten. Levitt was their top choice, Minshi was their second, but they didn't want to risk getting neither because they felt like there was a big drop off after those ten. And Shannon, you might understand that because they had the guy at number twelve and let him walk exactly, So they clearly think there's a big drop off after the top ten because they were willing to let number twelve walk. So I can understand in that scenario, Shannon, why you would say, if there's a big drop off and you're not gonna tell us, we just have to go ahead and take this. 00:07:03 Speaker 4: Guy makes sense to me. 00:07:05 Speaker 3: I mean some of these guys, I look at the four stars, five stars, and you have to sometimes take it with a grain of salt. But I mean, look at what this guy has been able to do so far. I mean, I think he's gonna be a good fit, and I think that will Stein is a guy who can develop him. 00:07:18 Speaker 5: And I think ultimately you have to trust will Stein. Yeah, he put Bo Nicks in the NFL, Dylan Gabriel in the NFL, and now Dante Moore will play in the NFL. His last three quarterbacks have played in the NFL. He clearly knows what it takes to put a dude in the NFL. Ryan, I think you have to say, if he thinks this is the guy, then who am I to say he's not exactly. 00:07:39 Speaker 2: I can't pretend like I know anything about Kenny Minche other than what you wrote and Luckett wrote last night. But you totally trust he. Stein's a quarterback whisperer. You think these top noble quarterbacks they want to play for him to help get them ready for the NFL. So if that's a situation where he was almost the starting quarterback at Notre Dame and he's pretty good, he's really good. Yeah, he's will Stein's pick. I totally who. 00:08:00 Speaker 5: Beat him out. It's projected to after next year be an NFL quirt, So you know. 00:08:08 Speaker 2: Like you gotta be happy with it now. 00:08:09 Speaker 5: There were people, yes I do. I mean, I'm not gonna I don't know anything. I didn't know there was a kny yesterday. So I'm not gonna sit here and be like, you know what, he's gonna great arms. I don't know. I don't know. I talked to two different people last night. One who is a reporter and one who's just a fan of Notre Dame. Both of them said, uh, you' are gonna love it great like talent, you know, nearly became the starter here, You're gonna love it. I hope they're right. Yes, now there. I think the reactions online last night chan And told me, I think you could see people's reaction online. Are you an optimist or are you a pessimist? Because your reaction online last night was basically determining that if you're an optimist, you go. Will Stein's been a quarterback whisper last three in the NFL. Let's go trust him. If you're a pessimist, you go. That's what they told us about Brock Vandergriff too, and he wouldn't. 00:09:14 Speaker 4: Know good but different coaching stuff though exactly. 00:09:18 Speaker 5: And by the way, I also note, if you want to do the well, that's what they told us about Randon Griff. Right before him was a guy named Will Levis who would never played. 00:09:26 Speaker 2: That's true. He was a backup. 00:09:27 Speaker 5: He was a backup. Yep. So when we take guys who haven't played, we're one and one. Will Levis was successful. Brock Vandergriff was not. And I also like when people say they Shannon because they're like what they hid. But it's a different they it's a different day. I've told the story before, but when my mom was prosecutor. Do you remember that? Oh yeah, my mom was prosecutor and somebody got killed in Bell County and my grandma said to my mom, I don't think they're going to do anything about the guy who killed so and so. That's not really how my grandmother sounds. But I'm gonna do. 00:10:09 Speaker 6: It rough, Grandma, I don't think that's how they're good. They're they're going to do anything, Okay. And my mom looked at her and said, mother, who do you think they is? 00:10:20 Speaker 5: It's me, Well there's a little bit of that. That's what they told us. Well it's a different coaching staff now. 00:10:32 Speaker 2: So many people they gotta you know, they're from Missouri. You gotta prove it to me. This guy's not what do you show me? Not prove it? 00:10:40 Speaker 4: Show me, show me, not prove it? 00:10:43 Speaker 5: Somebody from Missouri. You gotta prove it. You mean, show me. 00:10:46 Speaker 2: Show me. 00:10:47 Speaker 5: Okay. 00:10:47 Speaker 2: I think they had to see it. 00:10:48 Speaker 5: He was close. He knew that it was a state where you had something that you know, he knew it was either prove or show. He knew it was something. So the prove it state Missouri. Go ahead. 00:11:05 Speaker 2: Hell, I don't know what I was getting. 00:11:06 Speaker 5: I mean, you're gonna say they were gonna have to prove it like you gotta. 00:11:09 Speaker 2: I gotta see it. You guy hasn't played a lot yet, hasn't proved it yet because he's not from Missouri. What I see and I said, prove it again. 00:11:18 Speaker 5: I will just let you go on that. Uh, so they get this kid now. The second part of it I thought was interesting. So I talked to a source around the program, a very good sort huh, and I sort of. This was the first time I'd gotten to ask him, what is your alls like philosophy around the port This is exactly what they said, And I want to see if you agree with this flaw. Okay, they said, Look, we have a budget of X amount of money. The key to college football now is figuring out how to use it right. Right, The NCAA allows us to spend this amount of money, and then there's obviously an ail that you could conceivably get on the side. The fly blosophy we have is there's only a handful of guys, the studs from his press compe, the studs that are worth a lot of money, Okay, and we are going to spend our money on those guys and everybody else. If they're bleeding us for money, we'll say sorry, cause there's ten guys that are if they're not quite as good as you, are, really close, and we'll use them because we think our money is best invested on having a handful of studs. Huh do you agree with that philosophy? 00:12:35 Speaker 2: I like it. You've got your center, you got your quarterbacks, so now you're going to feed the stud get you a running back. 00:12:40 Speaker 5: So in this class, these are the quote unquote studs so far. The quarterback, the center they got from Baylor, who, by the way, is the number one ranked interior alignment in America in the portal, so that's big. 00:12:53 Speaker 2: So they got herere your offensive line. 00:12:55 Speaker 5: I think they want to get the wide receiver from Texas more he'd be one. Yes. I think they are probably looking at Ty Bryant, who they had to get to Staty recruit as one and then maybe two or three more. And those are your studs, and then you build around them by the people that are willing to work at the price you would do. Do you like that philosophy. 00:13:18 Speaker 2: I love the philosophy. You know, bring in your guys, you know it can be your playmakers. 00:13:22 Speaker 5: Rather than paying lots of money for seventeen or eighteen guys and then you just get whatever's. 00:13:31 Speaker 2: Left, Which is kind of when the philosophy and years. 00:13:34 Speaker 5: They're basically say that's exactly right. They're basically saying, we're investing heavily in six or seven guys studs, studs, and then we'll give good money to another twenty, but we ain't getting in a bidding war for the rest of them. And that may mean letting some good players walk, but we need the stud is. 00:13:55 Speaker 2: The defension line. When they got from LSU. Is he in your stud category? 00:13:58 Speaker 5: I don't think they would be in that category. Okay, I think he would be a we got a good price on a good guy. 00:14:03 Speaker 2: Good I mean cause I was impressed I got him. He's a freshman starter in the SEC at LSU. 00:14:08 Speaker 5: On they didn't play as much this year, didn't. 00:14:10 Speaker 2: Play as much as past. 00:14:11 Speaker 4: I don't do you think they went all in on Sam Levitt then, because I. 00:14:14 Speaker 5: Think they got this guy for half the money and they don't think he's half the player. And he also, I think himself, may have wanted to go to LSU. 00:14:23 Speaker 4: I'll like that philosophy though. 00:14:25 Speaker 3: I mean, you know you're gonna be going up against studs every Saturday in the SEC, so you need you know, your main guy is to be the best that you can find. So I would rather do that than spread it out amongst twenty others. 00:14:34 Speaker 5: And I do think Stoops's philosophy was I'm gonna give twenty guys really good money, and then let's just we'll give whoever else we can get. They're saying, we'll give a leap money to seven guys, good money to another twenty five, and then the rest of the people will And I think that it makes sense to me. Now that means those guys got to be true. They can't be bumped, they can't be bus But I think that philosophy makes sense because Kentucky they got the number one interior offensive lineman in the country because they focused in on him, huh. And that's probably the way to do. 00:15:15 Speaker 2: And now that you've got your quarterback, you go get a stud receiver guys. 00:15:20 Speaker 5: I think it's what they're hoping. 00:15:21 Speaker 2: Yeah, they want to see your who's my quarterback? Gonna before I commit? 00:15:24 Speaker 5: And then you get a stud receiver. And then they're keeping a couple of those young guys that played well last year Arley Gilmore, d J. Miller and Hardley Gilmore. Yeah so he if I'm nine two eighth twenty two eighty seven, we'll take a break, take your calls if you have thoughts on that, and then we're gonna talk Mark Pope's uh you know show. This is KSR, Welcome back, take you sports radio? Is this uh why Tennessee stud? 00:15:49 Speaker 4: Because he's a study and he's from Tennessee. 00:15:51 Speaker 5: Oh is he from Tennessee? I didn't know that in national area? I think, yeah, okay, see I didn't know he's from Tennessee. There you go. Sorry, my sorry, I mean my head it's not working with there we go, all right, so it's from Tennessee. Good to see. This is this on the text machine? Example what I'm talking about. One person rides Matt Minshi sounds like Brock vandergriff. I can't get excited. Well, why can't you say it? Sounds like Will Levis, Like, why do you pick Brock? Vandergriff and not listen. I'm not saying he's not I'm not saying he's gonna be good. I have no idea. But what is it about your mind that goes to Brock vander Griff instead of Will Levis? Like it's you if you think that way, you have a tendency to just think to the negative. Because Will Levis was an NFL quarterback that came here same situation, Penn State lost a battle, didn't get to play, came here and was good. 00:16:52 Speaker 2: Yep. 00:16:52 Speaker 5: Now Brock grand mc griff, same thing came here, didn't work out. But noether of those things don't have anything to do with what Willson does. So when you're in brain initially says in my mind, he's brought Vandergriff. You're also almost helping me look into your soul Shannon and say, I initially look for the negative. 00:17:13 Speaker 4: Glass is half empty. Yes, it's a person that you are. 00:17:16 Speaker 2: Vandergriff was a disappointment, but he was hurt. He got hurt, you know, and we didn't have him a good backup. 00:17:21 Speaker 5: The other thing I would say, so like there was a I saw on a Facebook people, why don't people send me threads where people on Facebook are debating me and Shannon. I know not to look at that. They're debating like literally, someone wrote me and goes, you should read this. They're debating you, and I thought, no, I shouldn't it's bedtime, but you did anything? But I did, And you know, usually it's like two different conversations. There's one of stinky stinky Joe Biden, Kumla Hers Mago. Okay, so those people, You're not gonna win those people. But then there's the second group that will say something like, well, there's also a third group. There's a second group that's like, well, he's too arrogant, he talks too much. It's a radio show. What do you want from me? I mean you want me to just sit here and go, well, that's KSR, Like, I mean, I have to say something. But then the third group will say their sunshine pumpers. They get everybody worked up. Well, here's my question. If we don't know this kid, wouldn't it be better to spend these next six months getting excited about him than to sit here and say an he stinks absolutely, Like what good does that do? We're spend the next seven or eight months going but none of us know. Not one person listening to this show knows if he's good. No, not one person unless you are mister and missus Minchi. And even then you're probably biased because it's your kid, now, you know. Now, I do like the Nebraska part. I like making Nebraska map. I do Shannonska fans. You want to talk about people living in a different generation, Yeah right, they're the people still hoping that rotary phones are coming back. 00:19:09 Speaker 4: They're one step above Kansas for me. 00:19:11 Speaker 5: Yes, well that's that's just in the overall state. 00:19:14 Speaker 4: Yes, but that's the people too though. 00:19:17 Speaker 5: But Will Compton, I got nothing against Will Compton. Don't even hundred cent know who he is. I know he's on Busting with the Boys, which is like two guys, him and Taylor Shirser. 00:19:30 Speaker 2: Yeah, big tall guy. 00:19:34 Speaker 5: Or is it Lewin. 00:19:36 Speaker 4: It's not even close to it. 00:19:37 Speaker 5: It's not you know, it's Max Scherzer, Yeah, Taylor. Anyway, point being, I think they were former offensive lineman, is that right? They used to be with Barstool. That's how I knew it that and then I think they went and did something else. I don't know those guys. They may be wonderful dude. So this is not but Will Compton's like a Nebraska grad. Yeah, played in Nebraska, played at Nebraska. And he gets online and he's like, he's yelling about this kid. You blanked Nebraska, you had a deal and bird bye bye bye bye bye. Just wines and I got nothing against Will Compton. I don't know him. He might be the best dude in the world. But Shannon and I kind of loved listening to him more so I retweeted because the show is called Busting with the Boys, and I retweeted and said coping with the boy, which is beautiful, which I say, I was proud of you. That sounds like I don't like the guy. I don't know the guy, right, But I just like when Nebraska, because you know, they took they took Wan Dell out of high school and then we got him back, and then we took Doll Dell, but then they took Dame Keys. Yes, true, so I like taking their guy because Nebraska thinks they're in Nebraska, but they're not Nebraska. 00:20:47 Speaker 2: If you're in Nebraska, you don't lose a guy to Kentucky, right. I don't know where this rivalry started with Nebraska and us. It was one deal. I guess the first guy we had alreadycruiting about it. 00:20:56 Speaker 5: And then there's the volleyball thing things. Yeah, and they have so much corn and I'm not a fan. The other thing is I would say to will Compton again, no offense, man, get your money. But you used to work for Barstool and then the gambling company offered you more money. And guess what he did, Shannon. He left barstool and went to the gambling company, followed the money. And when he was asked about it, I remember they said something like, well, I mean we loved the Barstool people, but it was just such a good opportunity. 00:21:28 Speaker 3: You would have to follow the money to want to live in Nebraska. I mean, you couldn't pay me enough to want to go to Nebraska. 00:21:33 Speaker 5: But like, if you're gonna be the guy that follows the money, how can you get mad at this kid for following the money? Like you know, it is what it is. 00:21:42 Speaker 2: The one Nebraska game I went to this year to watch Dane. He was there and when he went on the field, the place went nuts, Like the student body went. They love the guy. 00:21:49 Speaker 5: He's very popular amongst amongst younger people. And good, I mean not gotten good for will Compton, but like yelling about this kid, I thought that was kind of a low budget. 00:21:59 Speaker 2: Yeah, that's why you're what do you call him spineless or something? 00:22:02 Speaker 5: Yeah? I mean, you know, it's he'd only been committed to him for a day. It's not like his heart was there. It's true. I don't think I think already never even visited. 00:22:13 Speaker 2: Said what, Kentucky gave him a blank check? 00:22:16 Speaker 4: Yeah? So and exactly. 00:22:20 Speaker 7: I mean. 00:22:22 Speaker 5: It's not like in the twenty four hours he was committed, he had like started a farm and was growing corn out there, like he had no love for Nebraska. So now he's coming to Kentucky. Things happen. 00:22:36 Speaker 2: I hope we can get them in a bowl game next year. That'd be awesome. 00:22:38 Speaker 5: Plus they're undefeated in basketball. They are they're calling it nebrasketball. What you don't like that? 00:22:48 Speaker 2: I don't like that at all? 00:22:50 Speaker 5: Nebrasketball. The coach, I think, after the game the other day, looked at the crowd and said, who's your daddy. Wow, I'm just saying we'll be right back. TJ Smith, personal injury attorney, called TJ he'll make them pay now. 00:23:05 Speaker 3: More of Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage. 00:23:08 Speaker 4: Here's Matt Jones. 00:23:10 Speaker 5: Is this Springsteen? 00:23:11 Speaker 4: It is? Yeah? 00:23:12 Speaker 5: Yeah, because he has an album named Nebraska. Right, I think the movie about him that just came out is about the making of the movie or of the album Nebras it is. 00:23:21 Speaker 3: I think so this song has the same vibe that you get when you drive into Nebraska. 00:23:25 Speaker 4: As soon as you cross the state line, you just want to take a nap. 00:23:27 Speaker 5: I agree. There's a great movie called Nebraska. That's a great movie. It's Will Forte and it's about his grandfather thinks he won the Publisher's clearing House sweepstaut in Omaha, and he can't convince his granddaddy doesn't win, so he just takes him to Omaha. 00:23:45 Speaker 4: Really, that's the best thing about Nebraska is that movie. 00:23:48 Speaker 5: It is to cash and then the movie's all in black and white. Really it's a really good movie. It really is. I think I think the older guy got nominated for an Oscar for it. That's a really good movie. That's exactly right, that's who it is. Yeah, that's a really good movie. If I'm nine eighty seven, all right, I got a couple of people on I want to talk Mark Pope, but let's just they've been waiting, so Dennis, go ahead, Dennis. 00:24:15 Speaker 7: Hey, we want to put comment on the on on Nebraska not really what I call about I call about football, but uh, in the volleyball tournament, I remember after one game, they're fans is on twitter're talking about talking about the viewership and that also it's the Nebraska effect. And then after the Kentucky Wisconsin match, Uh, they. 00:24:38 Speaker 8: Got a big high rating. So they're they're they're volleyball fans just kind of get on my nerves. 00:24:42 Speaker 5: They really do. Their volleyball fans are very arrogant, but go ahead. 00:24:47 Speaker 7: Very arrogant. They think they amvented the game at the sport. 00:24:49 Speaker 9: Uh. 00:24:50 Speaker 8: But on the football is you said you think DeAndre Moore is is one of the uh stuff receiver? 00:25:00 Speaker 7: What about Malcolm What about what about Malcolm sent? And then CJ. Baxter stood running back? 00:25:07 Speaker 5: I think they want CJ. Baxter, but there there's a couple other schools going for him. I think they feel very confident about DeAndre Moore Baxter. Maybe he feel fifty to fifty or something, so I'm not sure. And as far as the other receivers. I'm sure there are many great receivers. I just think that more is the one they feel like they got the best shot with. 00:25:28 Speaker 7: All right, and you consider the left tackle new right tackle also players that they want. 00:25:35 Speaker 5: Yes, the kid from is he from LSU? Is that right? The one that's visiting whatever? That guy Nick Rouse reported. I can't remember what school it was. It was three hundred and forty pounds or something. It was LU I think it was LSU. Yeah, that's one of them too. I appreciate the call. I can't remember what his name is. But by the way, I also heard a little bit about who we were paying last year. I'm not like, because I don't know officially, I'm not gonna say, but I can't believe some of the money we were paying to people last year and who we were paying it to. We have. We had five guys on the team last year, three of which two of which barely played, three of which didn't start. Yeah, that are making We're making more money than all but one person will make this year. 00:26:24 Speaker 2: That poor budgeting. 00:26:26 Speaker 5: They did not budget well, no, they didn't, Trevor. Go ahead, Trevor, Trevor, all right, let's get to something else if I'm nine two eight twenty two eighty seven, couple out, let's talk about the uh the Mark Pope Show last night? 00:26:46 Speaker 2: It let it start. 00:26:48 Speaker 5: Okay, so listen, I read that Facebook thing and they're like, oh, he's already running off Mark Pope. I'm not running off Mark Pope. I like Mark Pope. I still think he can work here. I am not anything but wanting Mark Pope to succeed. And there's almost nothing that could happen the rest of the year that would not say to me Mark Pope should be back next year. So I just want to give that caveat since everybody seems to forget that. With that said, I think you are doing a dereliction in duty if you don't mention things as they happen and go, whoa, this is weird. Is that not fair? Very fair? I don't understand what that press conference was last night or the Coaches Show. Mark needs to get away from Shannon speaking like Tony Robbins. Yeah, like he is literally just saying gobbledegook. 00:27:43 Speaker 4: A lot of words without saying anything. 00:27:46 Speaker 5: I honestly feel like I'm listening to like a motivational speaker. Yeah, and you're a basketball coach, I'm going to read you this quote, and this is from the show last night. Now, this is someone wrote this quote, so this is this might be a word or two wrong, but this is why Huff wrote that. This is what Mark Pope said. This is what he said, and I want you to try to understand what these words mean. What's really important for us as coaches and as teammates is understanding the story that each of our guys and each member of our staff is telling themselves about what we're going through right now, and then bringing it back to two things. One is a point of truth and to a point of common understanding about what you're experiencing, where the shortcoming is, where the pitfalls are. There was actually a theme of our film today. What does that even mean? I mean, seriously, he's that's fifteen seconds of words that I don't even know what to say. What does that mean? A point of truth? 00:28:51 Speaker 2: In me? 00:28:52 Speaker 5: The question was why didn't we play? Well? 00:28:55 Speaker 2: Yeah? 00:28:56 Speaker 10: Me? 00:28:56 Speaker 2: The theme of film session, but it should have been why can't we give up? While we give up? 00:29:00 Speaker 10: Me? 00:29:00 Speaker 2: Open three pointers? That's what I want to know. The theme of the film session not about writing you're relooking at your story and rewriting your story. 00:29:06 Speaker 5: I don't understand. Credit to Tom Leach, who I thought asked him some good questions, but he doesn't really answer them. And then we bring on Travis Ford for thirty minutes. Who wants to hear that. 00:29:16 Speaker 2: I love Travis Ford, but the last night was not the time to bring him on for thirty minutes. 00:29:19 Speaker 5: But once they do that, that's always when you know things aren't going with Yeah, right, when you start going okay, let's bring on the former player. He needs a PR team, he needs someone there to go what are you doing? What are you talking about? He said that Jalen Lowe would start at some point, but him not starting is part of bringing him back and getting him ready. What does that mean, Shannon? How does him starting playing three or four minutes later in a game change his rehab? 00:29:56 Speaker 3: I'm still trying to figure out his quote, which I've read ten times and still understand a point of truth and a point of common understanding. 00:30:03 Speaker 5: What does that mean? 00:30:05 Speaker 2: Come back to your story? 00:30:06 Speaker 5: You know, here's what that sounds like. In my life, I've had to go okay, So from a like what I believe in standpoint, I lean left. But from how I want to run meetings and life. I lean right, Shannon. Not everybody needs to talk, that's true. Not everybody needs to tell their truth. That's a big thing. Liberals like to say. We should all get to say our truth. Some people's truth, Shannon, need to just stay in their heads. 00:30:38 Speaker 4: Yep, that's good. Sometimes everybody doesn't need to speak. 00:30:43 Speaker 5: I've been to a lot of meetings over the year, especially when I was thinking about running for Senate, where everybody had to speak, and they would spend three or four minutes saying nothing, and it would drive me crazy, usually listening to somebody dressed like a hippie. Huh go. Really, what we need is passionate human understanding of the soul. And I'm like, the question was whether or not we want coal. That's what that sounds like. 00:31:12 Speaker 2: It is. 00:31:13 Speaker 5: It sounds like you're going to like a peace love guru meeting. We're talking about basketball. This is the UK Basketball Coaches Show. 00:31:23 Speaker 2: Seriously, and although purposes relating to your fan base, I think that does not relate to that exactly. 00:31:30 Speaker 5: You know, why is he doing that? 00:31:32 Speaker 2: I don't know. 00:31:33 Speaker 5: I was telling him to talk like that. 00:31:36 Speaker 2: I think his if you would think his personality off the court reflects more of that side of. 00:31:42 Speaker 5: Is it just that when he got hired and he was doing that, it's beautiful and it's all that. I remember Drew said it once, like, we're okay with this now because we're winning, but when we start losing, this stuff is gonna sound gets old quick. I think that's what it is. 00:31:57 Speaker 2: Yeah. 00:31:57 Speaker 5: I think when you go, everything's beautiful and it's an understan Like when you're winning, you're like, oh, he's quirky, but when you're losing, your like, dude, I just asked you why Jay when Low wasn't start. 00:32:14 Speaker 2: I've not heard one good reason why he's not playing his best lineup. You said that one lineup yesterday played one minute together. Yeah, that's coaching malpractice. 00:32:22 Speaker 5: His answer when I asked why Cam Williams didn't play was all over the place. Yes, I mean it was all of it. 00:32:27 Speaker 2: Still don't understand that, So I don't know. 00:32:31 Speaker 5: I felt like when this was over, I had joined a new age philosophy club. 00:32:37 Speaker 2: That's kind of what it felt. 00:32:38 Speaker 5: Like, and I wanted Shannon to be not in the club anymore. 00:32:42 Speaker 4: Yeah, I think it would have been better off and did not even hear anything. 00:32:45 Speaker 5: I kind of agree with you. He needs someone to help him not talk like that. Yeah, don't you agree? 00:32:55 Speaker 2: Not just like that, but how he does the postgame news conferences with Tom Leach after they lose. He can't that way either. He's got to fire, He's got to get it together. 00:33:02 Speaker 5: So was he like this at the beginning and we just ignored it. 00:33:05 Speaker 2: I don't remember him one time last year having that quarter reaction after a loss with Tom Leech? 00:33:11 Speaker 5: No, but do you remember him talking like a chef? You know, I mean he throw he's taking us all into you know. 00:33:22 Speaker 2: He would go off on a tangent once in a while, But it seems to me more so now she's trying to he's searching for answers. 00:33:28 Speaker 5: That's probably what it is. Is he just doesn't really know what to say. And it's like that meme on the office where he just start He says like I open my mouth and start talking and don't know where it's gonna end. 00:33:40 Speaker 2: There may be some truth to that. That may be some truth to that. 00:33:43 Speaker 5: Maybe start the new year off strong while taking care of yourself and that includes your skin, Ryan women, okayou this year prioritize your skin health, whether it's persistent acne, fine lines, or that spot you've been meaning to check. Shan and I were talking during the break. This is even Flow by Pearl Jam. There's a new wrestler in the Independent Circuit whose name is Stephen Flow. And he comes out and he's resung the lyrics about him. He goes Stephen fool Shandon. I actually think it's pretty good. 00:34:39 Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, good little gimmick, right l Yeah. 00:34:42 Speaker 5: He comes out, he kind of looks like Eddie Vader back then he's dressed like him. 00:34:47 Speaker 2: Stephen fool kind good, kind of catchy. 00:34:51 Speaker 5: I think it's a smart idea. Uh text machine seven seven two seven seven four five two five four. One person writes, Matt, I'm ashamed to say I know where those sayings come from from Martin Pope. It's from an author's leadership book named Breen Brown, and it's called the Story I'm Telling myself. Well, that's what he said. 00:35:14 Speaker 4: That's a deep cut there, man. 00:35:16 Speaker 5: Breing Brown, b r e n E. Brown. You have to look up Shannon and see if that's like a real thing, I mean, other Why would you just make that up? Another person writes, Matt, do I want you to read the phrase again that Pope said and then imagine him saying it to DeMarcus Cousins. All right, that's a good ideas idea. Let's act like Let's act like this. This is Mark Pope is coaching DeMarcus cut. What's really important for us is coaches and teammates is understanding the story that each of you, guys, and each member of our staff is telling themselves about what we're going through right now, and then bringing it back to two things. One is our point of truth and our point of common understan standing about what you're experiencing, where the short coming is and where the pitfalls are Hello, mister president is I was thinking you were going to drop it there. Can you imagine saying that toe group of college basketball players and DeMarcus says, shut up, coach, get out of the way and get me the ball. I can't imagine going in a locker room, though, and saying. 00:36:22 Speaker 4: That this ain't no spelling bee. 00:36:24 Speaker 2: Yeah, while they're breaking down film, he says he's breaking down and rewriting their story. 00:36:29 Speaker 5: Did you want me to cut left or right? 00:36:31 Speaker 4: Would you think DeMarcus would even commit to Mark Pope? 00:36:34 Speaker 5: No, I don't. I don't either. I do wonder about how I mean, it's clear there are players that really love Mark Pope Pope, but I do wonder like that's not going to work on everybody. No, it's not, you know, so I don't know. Let's go to Cowboy. 00:36:45 Speaker 11: What's up, Hey, guys, it's a first time long time. I got two questions. First, I just want preface to say I think it was still the right move with Coach Pope at the right time. I don't want to discount what Coach cow did, like the Telethons, the Samaritan Steat, all of those little things that he would do to get the team together and bring the whole state in with the team and show them who they are and everything. I think that's one thing that he's done. 00:37:20 Speaker 5: He's done a lot of that. I mean, he took the team to London during the tornado. I think, to be fair, he's done a lot of that stuff. You may not have seen it. It may not have been quite as big like the Hoops for Haiti thing, but he's I don't think you can say he hasn't really tried to reach the team out to the state, and they do bonding stuff all the time, so I don't think that would be I don't think he's done that poorly. 00:37:46 Speaker 11: Okay, those are just things that I haven't seen, I guess, but they were obviously things that coach cow would would. 00:37:53 Speaker 5: Yeah. No, he's done that, and I actually think got away from that at the end. I appreciate the call, but certainly at the beginning he did a lot of that. I think Pope has to Dave, go ahead, Dave. 00:38:05 Speaker 12: Man, you know what. Listen to that last night? 00:38:07 Speaker 13: Oh, I thought, my god, we've hired Bill Walt. 00:38:12 Speaker 12: I mean, he was just the rambling and you got touched on it. I mean, can you imagine if that's the way he tries to communicate with the players. I mean, no wonder we've sucked. 00:38:23 Speaker 5: Well kids that age. Can you imagine Ryan saying that to like just signed all his friends. 00:38:29 Speaker 2: They would zone out and not pay one lick of attention to what I'm saying, not at all. You just zone out, You just like tune out. 00:38:36 Speaker 5: Yeah, do you think that's what happens, sir? 00:38:40 Speaker 12: Oh, I don't. 00:38:40 Speaker 13: I have no doubt it would happen if he said it to me, And I'm sick. 00:38:43 Speaker 12: You want to is you know what what has happened since last year? 00:38:50 Speaker 5: I don't know. 00:38:51 Speaker 12: I mean he's like, he's not even the same dude. I mean, if you. 00:38:54 Speaker 13: Look at our schemes offensively, the way his manner is, the way he talks, the way he handles himself, it's like he's a different dude. 00:39:01 Speaker 9: Man. 00:39:01 Speaker 13: It's like he's been taken over by the ghost of Bill Walton but appreciates call. 00:39:06 Speaker 5: I think I had a lot of people yesterday compare him to Bill Walton, and I don't think that's exactly right because Bill was more kind of like a pothead. But the like random just you know, this could go anywhere. Bring Brown, My mom says, as a woman, did you look up to see if that is that? Is that a book? 00:39:26 Speaker 12: She had it? 00:39:26 Speaker 4: It is an author Barry On Brown. 00:39:29 Speaker 5: No, no, no, Bring It's a different he would have a different way of communicating. Samantha, go ahead, Samantha. 00:39:37 Speaker 9: Yeah, Will. What I kind of saw was pope. I wonder if he just doesn't know how to handle this team. They're functioning more and morphoge to like pro instead of what college used to be. And it's almost like I wonder if he came into it thinking he was gonna coach a team like he was part of. 00:39:58 Speaker 5: Well maybe, but I appreciate the call the I mean, he's smart, he had to know, and he was coaching up until this point. I know he was at BYU, but he's still I mean, it is more like pro. But he knew that, I would think, right. 00:40:12 Speaker 2: He's obviously very, very smart and now he knows a lot more basketball than we all know. But last night was his chance to kind of reconnect with our fan base, and I just felt like he dropped the ball. You know, we wanted to be, like Shannon said yesterday, wanted our coach to be upset we lose. We want to know how you're going to fix it, not talk about like you said, Tony Robbins quotes the whole night. 00:40:33 Speaker 5: I'd say, I think Tony Robbins mixed with Bill Walton would be the best way, good way to put it. Yeah, Mark, go ahead, Mark. 00:40:43 Speaker 10: Hey, Hey, you guys doing today. 00:40:44 Speaker 5: Doing good? Before you say that, Mark, one more thing. What was he talking about AI pictures of plane crashes and all that? 00:40:50 Speaker 8: Right? 00:40:50 Speaker 5: What was that, Shannon? I don't even know what he's talking about. He said there were AI pictures of his wife being pregnant and plane crashes, and what was that. 00:41:00 Speaker 3: Think that somebody had made those and maybe sent onment he had seen those? 00:41:04 Speaker 5: Did he think that every I'm not, I mean, nobody covers this more than me. I didn't know what he was talking about. 00:41:09 Speaker 4: Yeah, I hadn't even seen the pictures I had seen. 00:41:11 Speaker 10: To me, I go ahead, sir, a couple of things and I'll get off here real real quick. Matt, you kind of stole my thunder. That's what I was going to ask. If this is bizarre to us, his actions and what he says, imagine how it is with his players and with recruits and there could be a lot of the problems that we're. 00:41:33 Speaker 5: Seeing could be I mean, I think that's a fair appreciated call. I think that's a fair question. You know again, I have found myself in rooms with people who talk like this. They're usually it's usually political or it's like new age hippie religion stuff, and they're not talking about what he's talking about. But like, just people who talk like that, and I find it exhausting. I really do like it just rubs me the wrong way. And I love Mark Pope, but there was a part of me that was going, hey, man, just get to the point, yeah, and just answer what he's Tom. Tom is not Mike Wallace. Just answer his question. 00:42:17 Speaker 2: Trying to help you last night f l A. 00:42:18 Speaker 5: I thought he was too and Mark wouldn't take the help. Well, come back, I re number two. It's KSR.
