He'll go'll be bad. It's the Internet. You're busy. Let's do this
for February twelfth, twenty twenty four. For the next hour or so,
let me help you soar through the world of gaming on Game Mess Mornings Live
with Me Jeff Grubb. Today, phil is quolling concerns at Xbox and switch
to may have a much requested feature, but first please join me and welcoming
today's co host to Game Mess Mornings. It's Mike Manati. Everybody. Mike,
how are you doing? Hi? Jeff? Yeah, I'm you know
good. I got to have a weekend, which is always nice. Uh
yeah. We were gonna like play helld Divers on Friday, and I got
kind of busy. And then Christian was like inviting as You're like, I'm
out partying. I'm like, good for Mike. I'm glad he's out there
having a good time. Oh yeah, yeah, I was partying for sure.
Yeah. That was crazy. I was partying. We did. Uh
yeah, no, Well, you know there's that a lot of sports things.
That's all three hours of children's basketball Saturday mornings. That was How old
are these children? As young as five? Okay, it's the real good
stuff. It's the real stuff. They're getting kind of physical out there,
though there was some some tumbling and rough and throwing bows. Was anyone throwing
bows? One kid did angrily just straight up shove another kid at one point.
Hell yeah, yeah. His dad was a coach and threw them out
of the game. So you know the dramas. The dramas, Yeah,
I hear for the DRAMs. I don't know if I'm allowed to tell the
story, but I have a friend whose kid plays hockey, and he showed
me a video of his kid checking them, and it was very good.
It was very good video because I'm like, yeah, hockey, Like,
there's the puck is this big, and kids are like much bigger than the
puck, and they're all trying to get the puck at the same time.
Eventually they're just going to run into each other. And then when they decide
like I could just run into them whenever I want, that's when it really
gets good. That's when it becomes real hockey. And I get very excited.
I think the Internet we have cracked the code on who you're talking.
It's a secret. Good stuff. Yeah, but I the Red Wings they
start playing again this weekend. And they had they had children's it was like
children's Day, and so all of the goal announcements and like penalty announcements were
done by kids, and the announcer clearly was like teaching them, like how
to like speak from your belly and go Red Wings power play, and one
of them, like the captain of the team the Red Wings just got two
handed hit in the face with a stick. The guy was trying to hit
the puff out of the air and just baseball hit hit him in the face.
And it's like everyone's like really worried about him, and this kid just
goes and the Red Wings are on power play. It's like, okay,
tone it down a little bit, care we're concerned right now. It's really
good. It was good stuff. You watched the Super Bowl, though,
right, How'd you find that? It was fun? It was a close
game, so that's nice. I guess I think I would have slightly preferred
for the forty nine ers to win. But oh well, I mean I'm
very upset about terror Swift. I have a lot of things to say.
Oh yeah, I mean there's a lot of my thoughts scripted. Yeah,
of course. Yeah. I did have fun joking with my friends about government
si offs and like any time something bad happened to forty nine ers, like,
oh, there's Bill Gates manipulating those micro chests. Yep, the machines
are working. Their magic is at his computer console. He pushes the wrong
one and some lady in Iowa has a stroke. But well, there's there's
Travis Kelcey yelling and Andy Reid because Andy Reid got Maderna instead of Pfizer.
He's mad at him. He's mommy, Yeah, we're funny. Oh yeah,
good times, good times. Yeah it was. I had a fun
time with that. It got really good by the end. I lost like
ten bucks betting online. So oh wow, as you were a DV complete
degenerate over yeah, you know, better than most, So yeah it was.
It was fine though the commercials. Did you think the commercials were entertaining?
That's they're fine. I mean they got a formula just get celebrity.
So think Michael Sarah one was funny. Yes, Michael Sarah's funny. Michael
Sarah is one of my favorites. Oh yes, I like that one a
lot. That one's directed by Eric Wareheim actually from Tim and Eric. So
there you go. Of course, it's good. Yeah, Okay, that
makes a lot of sense because I definitely did have that energy. Yes,
show me that before, like and I was like, I really hope they
actually do air that commercial. And there's like even more to that commercial that
they did in the air, but they air most of it, so I
was pretty happy about it. All Right, you know what video game show.
Let's explain what we do here most weekdays, I, Jeff grebelhelp piece
your gaming life back together. That includes breaking news and maybe even some of
our own original reporting. For all these topics, I'll get the input of
a bona fide expert who will make me look smart. If you were watching
live on Twitch, welcome. You can always listen to the show later on
podcast feeds by searching for Game Mess Mornings, or find therss on giant bomb

YouTube. Hello YouTube. All right, we have a lot to get into,
so let's start the Morning Mess with Xbox is still committed to making consoles,
says boss Phil Spencer. This is from Vicky Blake at Eurogamer. Xbox
is still committed to me consoles, according to Phil Spencer, or Earlier this
week, Xbox boss Phil Spencer called an all staff town hall meeting to address
the rumors suggesting that that first party Xbox games could be released on other platforms,
insisting that this did not mean that the company wasn't committed to Xbox consoles.
According to journalist Shannon law Shout of the Shannon, the meeting, which
was held with all the internal staff on Tuesday, confirm the company was indeed
considering bringing first party games to multiple kinds of devices, and more would be
revealed publicly next week, that being this week, the week that direct is
probably happening. The company held an internal Tuesday town hall, where Spencer told
employees that there were no plans in stop making consoles and that Xboxes will continue
to be part of a strategy that involves multiple kinds of devices. Law reports,
adding the Xbox did not return a request for comment. We can figure
out probably why because they're going to do the business update here this week as
well, where they actually will highlight what's happening. Mike when you hear Okay,
he's in there telling them, hey, like relax, We're still going
to be making consoles. Sure, some of these games are going to go
to other other kinds of devices, including maybe PlayStation and switch. But maybe
it's not as extreme as you think. It looks like we're still committed to
the strategy we have had before. Does that quell any of your concerns a
little bit? I guess my main issue is that there is a problem with
the console's not selling enough, and releasing your games for other platforms like plation
is going to help the Xbox brand make more money, but it's not going
to help Xbox consoles some more. Maybe it's not going to have as much
of a detrimental effect as I think it will. I think there's gonna be
some kind But what is being done to help the boxes is that being actively
thought about a lot, as opposed to just the strategy of how can we
know, just make money in general? Right? I think that that they
seem to be working backward from they are concerned about not making enough money.
That's definitely something I've heard. I've heard other I've seen other people report the
same thing, report that same thing, And if that is the I make
concern. Beculd see like, well, there's easy ways to make more money
by putting these games out more places, And then that You're right, that
deemphasizes the importance of the hardware. Now, I think they've told us repeatedly
we have this conversation a bunch of times that they are less worried about the
hardware. They don't care where you play their games. They've said that in
as many words over and over again for years, and now it feels like
we have reached the zenith of what that could mean for the hardware. Now.
I still think, and we said this a bunch of times, that
they will keep making hardware for quite some time. We are all concerned about,
like, oh, hey, okay, if this does go the way
that you say it's going, and you make a lot more money by putting
these games out on PlayStation, well why not put in them on Why not
put them out on PlayStation day one? Wouldn't that make you even more money?
And at that point, what is the point of the Xbox hardware?
And then what is keeping PlayStation in check? In the head to head battle
there? These are all the things that it's very easy to spin out of
control here. Do you think that they will be able to craft a message
this week in this business update that will walk a line between all these concerns
and and what they are trying to do where they can convince people don't worry.
The hardware actually isn't going away. Uh, it will just be these
select few games and it will be much later after they come out on Xbox.
Yeah, it's gonna be a little tricky. Some people are going to
just be upset and kind of sort of see the the end game here as
soon as they say, hey, I guess some of these big games are
coming. And you know, they're going to use the phrase case by case
at some point right pause aside, it means, hey, not everything's gonna
go PlayStation. Everything's going to be considered though everything and again so that yeah,
and they're going to say in that basis meeting, hey we're still committed
to you know, Xbox series X and there's going to be future hardware even
But again, I just am a lot concerned fow committed they are. They're
committed enough to make them and support them. Are they common enough to really
want to make something that is going to become you know, maybe being in
first place whatever, what does that mean? Sure? But at some point
I want to have a little bit of that competitive edge or a little bit
of that we're gonna make We're gonna take some risks here so that we can
regain ground instead of just well, we're gonna keep making this because you know
why not. Yeah, the like what we expect this week, it'll be
High five Rush and maybe cee A Thieves. Beyond that, it's it's there's
still a lot of questions and there's been some back and forth. Like h
Nate the Hate, who had previously said that Starfield would be going to PlayStation
five, has now backed off it says he strongly believes it won't be going
to PlayStation five and that he recanted his previous reporting. Xbox Era still has
that report out there that says that Starfield may go to PS five. It's
being considered at the very least. I think it's safe to say most things
are being considered. But if Starfield is one that like isn't like obviously coming,
and if it's just like under consideration a little bit, that's still a
change from what it was before. Like I said, like they were gonna
keep those but those big with those the games exclusive Xbox that was a big
choice that they made after considering everything early on. Now if it's back under
consideration. That is a change that's a little bit different than Oh, that's
definitely coming to PS five and it'll be out later this year on that console.
So it's like that colors things a little bit for me, where it's
like, oh, okay, maybe they aren't changing things as drastically as I
assumed based on the reporting. At the same time, pretty sure Gears of
War is definitely under consideration, and it's like Gears of War feels like the
one that is and I said, pretty I've heard it multiple times now that
that's under consideration, and that one's like the one that's like right below Halo
for me, as like the Xbox franchise. So and we talked about this
last week, but like, I don't know, with Starfield, Gears of
War, like those ones under consideration, that is still like the big thing
here where it's like if those are up, anything's up, right, Yeah,
And it's almost kind of odd at a certain point if you're considering things
like yours War and you're not going to do Starfield honestly, if you're doing
like Hi Fi Rush, if this is the strategy right to do more things
on playcation, I almost am a little surprised that Starfield is one you're going
to hold back on. Yeah, at this point, which was a game
people were initially pretty upset, like wasn't going to be on PlayStation five,
And it's a game that did well but maybe could do better and you can
probably get a decent boost by putting it on Sony's platform there, So yeah,
you know again, so yeah, that report's getting walked back. I
could still see a world where Starfield comes out of Placation five, comes out
to other systems eventually, maybe this year, maybe later. But yeah,
I think that's it. Jet. It's just I still have this feeling of
everything's being considered and we're going to just generally see a lot more of it.
Yeah, and at the very least you could see the benefit, Like
it's very easy to understand how you come to this decision. Hi Fi rush
a franchise that they might want to continue investing in. Seems like they do
want to continue investing in, especially since it's coming out like first in this
initiative here. Uh, you know, you get people on PlayStation playing that
first one, you put out a second one that gets more people excited to
play it, whether it's on whether they get an X on Xbox, or
they get it on PC at day and date, or maybe they do eventually
just wait for the PlayStation version. That's exactly that's what they did with or
the first or came to switch a bit before the second, or came out
on Xbox right right, and then so it's something they probably have seen has
worked before, and they're going to come to it. I mean directed probably
this week. You still to direct, could be a partner direct you know
who could be a partner, right, yeah, yeah, I mean honestly,
like at this point, because you know, if Starfield isn't coming to
Places of five, then it is a little bit like why didn't you get
that message out there earlier? Like one maybe because of the tittle thing,
but two because you know, they can't they can't come out and say no,
Starfield's not coming on on Places of five because maybe it is. Maybe
they don't know yet and maybe they're even leaning towards no, but maybe.
Yeah. I think that's one of the big things here. It's like the
arguments among the fan community are going back and forth, and I think the
biggest smoking gun here is the ongoing silence for Microsoft and the promise of an
update where it's like, okay, well, I mean, if things just
weren't this way, they would have denied it. If Indiana Jones wasn't up
for consideration, they would have just said that by now, and you know,
or maybe we get to this business to update and they say it,
then we'll see. But it just feels like at this point everything probably is
at least on the table, And why would it, like, why put
like artificial limitters on you as a company. Well, everything is a possibility.
You could do, Like you own these things, you could do whatever
you want with them. So saying that you are going to never do anything
is a silly thing at a certain point, especially if you are looking to
shake things up under the Xbox brand. Meanwhile, over at Nintendo, there
is a report coming out of South American gaming websites that switch To will reportedly
be backward compatible with OG Switch games. This is from The Gamer. A
reliable leaker has claimed that the Nintendo Switch To or Super Nintendo Switch, whatever
you want to call it, will have backwards compatibility with the OG Switch games,
whether they're physical or digital. For some time now, sometime now,
we've known that Nintendo is working on the console that will follow the Nintendo Switch,
and after years of rumors in waiting, it seems very likely it's finally
going to reveal it to us at some point in twenty twenty four, although
we still have no idea when in the year we're going to see it,
Although rumors begin have a gunpointing to March, and some alleged details about the
system are already leaking out over on Twitter, centro Leaks shared a post from
relibel Nintendo leaker Universo Nintendo, who correctly leaked the name of Sonic X Sonics
Cross Shadow and the date of the last Nintendo Direct, among other things,
that seemingly reveals new details about the successor to the Switch. In the article,
Universo Nintendo claims that, as reported by pH Brazil during a recent episode
of the X of the x D Control podcast, switch To will allow for
physical and digital backwards compati ability with games from the original Nintendo Switch. If
true, this adds more evidence that the switch to successor will be using cartridges
or cards for its games, depending on who you are. All right,
all right, Okay, so I think it's like, obviously we just assume
it should have backward compatibility because it should, right, but there has been
a lot of questions about whether or not they would actually be able to do
that and or would care enough to do it because it's Nintendo. Nintendo could
always just be a Nintendo about it. Does hearing this report give you more
confidence that we actually will get a switch to with backward compatibility? I mean
I always thought we were going to get a switch to a backwards compatibility,
even when you know it was kind of flocked about years ago, like obviously
it has to and some people were rightfully pointing out, wow, it's harder
than you think because of this and that, I was still like, yeah,
well they got to figure it out. Uh, they're just going to
have to figure it out because it's just going to have to be a thing
this time, and I know Nintendo can be and they can surprise us.
I don't think there's any world where you can make what's going to be a
very like linear successor to the switch and not have a play switch games.
I mean talking about Xbox again, right, Like, so much of what
Phil Speesser kind of attributes to the problem this current Xbox generation is that we
lost last generation, and that's when people just really started building their permanent game
libraries now, and that's you know, I know Nintendo's weird can be from
their own world, but they have to understand that. They have to understand
that people have been building these game libraries on the switch. Now you just
can't sell them Super Mario Odyssey for sixty or seventy bucks again at this point,
maybe you can sell them a ten dollars upgrade for something or another,
but no, this is the new reality. They get it at least a
little bit. It's going to have backwards compatibility, right, So go over
again, like what like what you were suggesting there, like the conversation that's
been happening. People I think are going to see this, and if you
are not paying attention to the hardware side of things, you're like, obviously
there's backward compatibility. It's twenty twenty four. Don't be absurd, don't be
a clown. Uh. The question was Nintendo's likely moving to a chip set
that was going to be very different or much more advanced than what it used
last time for the Tegrat T X one, the X one. I can
never remember exactly what one I remember because there's like a two at the time
people say, well, oh, why don't they use the two? Yeah?
Right, it was the X one, and the one they're gonna be
using now is not directly going to be compatible. So there was gonna there
is work required to get switch games to work on the switch to one way
or the other. Like it was going to require either in Nvidia come up
with a compatibility layer or something like that, or Nintendo to do a bunch
of work on its side, and that seems very unlikely because it's Nintendo.
My position was always I bet Nvidia helps them out, figures it helps them
figure this out because it's a beneficial to both of them in the long run,
and that's likely. What happened here is that the companies came together and
figured out a solution. Now, them figuring out a solution doesn't mean that
we just get backward compatibility to work the way we want it to. Now.
The report does say that it is backward compatibility and the games run better.
Now, we don't necessarily know that that's how we're going to experience it
ourselves as at a retail when we have these units in our hands. It
could be, as you said, a paid upgrade path ten dollars upgrade path.
We don't know how it's actually going to look. What do you think
is most likely in your opinion, I think there will be gives that will
run natively. And if it's a ten dollars upgrade path, then you are
like buying like something that upgrades it to a switch to version of stuff that
we've seen with Places five and how you can still you download the Plastation four
version of Fantasy seven if you want righting things like that, that's probably exactly
right. Bring them up again. Date the Hate went on a reset era
and said he's heard that backward compatibility is in like the dev kits for partners,
but there's no like documentation, and there's no word from Nintendo about how
it's actually going to work for the final hardware. For example, whether like
the games will run better on the final hardware. That could change between the
dead kits and what Nintendo actually puts out. See they do something like whacky
like yeah, you can access your digital backward compatibility library if you're an NSO
member. It's always a possibility, especially if this was like maybe this was
cost intensive for them. I think Nintendo likes to make their money back they
might come up with some something silly like that, or they'll output at like
four K, meaning they'll upscale to four K people not like run Native we
have four K, but they'll they'll output at four K on your four K
TV if you're an NSO member, anything is possible with Nintendo. If I
had to put money on it, though, I would say that we are
probably just gonna get the games that we had on Nintendo Switch running on this
hardware and running a little bit better because of the improved hardware, and it
all just work, and Nintendo will look for other ways to make money.
But that's not that's like, you know, a fifty one percent chance,
and then the other forty nine percent. It could be anything Nintendo could come
up with. No, I think that's right. I think generally if you
want like an approved version of the game, it will be like the Last
of Us Part two remastered, right, You're gonna have to pay money for
that, and it is going to be a switch to game, Like there
might be a switch to version of Tears of the Kingdom and got you know,
God help us, maybe Scarlet and Violet. I don't know. There's
no no saving that game now. All right. Uh, you know,
let's let's take a quick break when we get back. We got foam Stars
reviews and a lot more. We'll talk about all that right after this.
All right, we're back, Mike. A lot of games have been coming
out recently. Did you play anything over the weekend while like you were like,
because I came up wanting to play more hell Divers and then I'm just
kind of playing a lot more like a Dragon because that's a layup. You
give me a layup here to admit that I like what this is. What
this is. It is not bad. It's not bad fun listen. Low
expectations helped, right, Like the expectations help. But definitely I'd be kind
of against this games from second one. You know that you've been with me
the whole time, but you know what, you usually have a pretty good
eye for these things. You have a pretty good like, hey, this
thing's pushing me away. I find it a little bit repulsive if I'm not
into this, and that usually that pans out. Now, this game is
not reviewed very well, so maybe mostly still correct, still pretty good on
that, I think. But you know, movement's really fun and that does
a lot for me in open World Games. I mean, you know,
I could be a character with a jet pack. Jeff, you know I
love jet I know you love jet packs. I just love jet packs so
much. And the fact that each character has different movement. That King Shark
is basically just Ultimate Destruction Hall. Yep, that's who I'm playing as.
That's really fun. Ye In. Like the story stuff that I did think
would be really repulsive, sometimes it is. Sometimes it's actually kind of funny.
Sometimes it actually kind of works, Like the shooting feels fine. Now.
I definitely think that they made a giant oopsie woopsie, really making this
some kind of live service saying, of course, in so much of this
game's woes is just bad timing. People do not want that the whole superhero
thing in general. I mean, the Suicide Squad ipe just terrible, terrible
timing. I understand why it's being received the way it is. You know
what, I was playing it, I you know, played it for like
three hours. That's having fun. Yeah that's about how much I played.
And I was like, yeah, you're right, it's it's all about the
movement and the character's feeling pretty cool to get around that world. So you
are you playing as is Ghana came as a dead shot or whoever the hell
it is, yeah, which he is, like the most boring character plays
an't have the jet back, right. I do like how the game something's
like, hey, this character is amped up and the story's gonna kind of
focus more on them. So play on numb for an ex peeps so kind
of like forces me to switch. I almost feel like it would be better.
It feels primarily like a single player, story driven game where your courage
to switch between these people or maybe friends can play with you. But you
know, a lot of review complaints are about things like it getting repetitive and
the end game not being very good. So I can't speak to any of
that, but you know those are complaints about like Avengers, And part of
my thing with Avengers was, yeah, well but I played the campaign and
had fun, and then I played a little bit of it case I have
with my brothers, so I was like, yeah, bored of that.
Sure. So it's always just thinking like, yeah, it's not living up
to the promise of this being some kind of forever game, which was a
silly goal, a silly, silly thing to do, but just running around
and as a as a giant shark person. You know, you do that
thing you lift them up in the air and you pull out your guns are
shooting them immediately, and like, oh, that feels pretty good. I
think the critical hits when you do that. Yeah, like that's they got
a lot of that stuff really well figured out. I mean the adventures comparison,
obviously is the most apt one my understanding. I haven't experienced this personally,
but people will say that, hey, the campaign of Avengers stands out
as being better than this because it does actually kind of feel like a single
player game. This one begins to feel like you are playing through multiplayer missions
by yourself, and that's why it feels repetitive. And I can see that.
And the design of the the design of the objectives is limited by like,
hey, if what you have four people working together together on this thing,
you got to give everyone something kind of fun to do. So nothing
stands out as being very fun for any one person. So okay, but
you know the Pepsi Challenge taste test out of the gate, this is fine,
This is like actually pretty a pretty good time. Now I'm like,
I'm like picking a game to play right now, I'm not picking this,
I'm picking hell Divers without a doubt, right, and I'm not like time.
Yeah, people are shame on these people who don't like the game.
Now I get it. But you know, like it's seven out of ten?
What I think a seven out of ten is right? And I think
it's I think the scores like laid more on the six out of ten side
of things at a fifty nine. Yeah, you see how that happens,
right, because like it's people are going to have a little bit harsher take
on this because it's it's rock steady and because it has such a negative connotation
going in to it. So it's like the reviewers tilt kind of turned down
a little bit. But seven out of ten I think is absolutely correct,
all right, speaking of such a game. A Foam Stars review thread here,
let's start. I think that actually, can Mike, can you look
up what it has on Metacritic for me? Why start going through some of
these individual reviews. CG Magazines Jordan Biorti gave it a six out of ten,
says Folm Stars isn't terrible, but it's uninspired gameplay, deficit of content,
and obscene monetization make it a forgettable experience. Eurogamers con Sarin gave it
a three out of five, says Foam Stars is a serviceable, serviceable paintballer
in the vein of Splatoon, lathered with some wild boar and underwhelming hero shooter
elements. Plush Squares Steven Talaby gave it a seven out of ten, says
film Stars is a colorful, unique, and entertaining shooter. The modes and
characters on offer at launch are fun twist on genre staples, and the central
foam mechanic is a playful addition with some potential for strategy. It's lighthearted,
fast paced fun with plenty of style, while the steep micro actions and the
so so co op missions keep it from being squeaky clean. There's a lot
to like about this bubbly multiplayer title. And finally, kotakus is Zack Swizen,
who has a review in progress, says some of the worst guns in
video games either fire slow moving projectiles or have annoying arcs you have to contend
with when aiming. Phone Stars bravely asks what if we combine the worst parts
of the worst guns into one gun and gave everyone in the game versions of
that bad weapon. The answer is a shooter that feels like crap. What
does it have on Metacritic, Mikey, I guess it's a sixty. That
a sixty? Okay, yes, so hey, it's rough out there for
these games that we've been hearing about for a minute that are coming out trying
to be live service games, the big sens divers. Yeah, that's one.
We came out of nowhere for a lot of people. I mean,
I think we were paying attention to it. I guess a lot of people
listening to this would be paying attention to it. But it didn't have the
marketing behind it that a Foam Stars did, which I suppose didn't even have
that much itself. Uh. The sin here seems to be it's not fun
to play the problem. That's a problem. The problem a lot of people
complaining about the way the guns feel. I've seen out there. I don't
know. I was like curious. I think I probably still will just try
it. But everyone I've heard that's been in the same boat I am where
they're like, I'll try it. They play it a couple of matches and
then they say they're good, and I imagine that's gonna happen to me as
well. Mike, do you have any interest in trying Foam Stars? I
mean I played a summer game fest. I was like, that's all right,
and that's maybe all I ever needed a play of it. Especially people
don't seem like this is gonna be something that pops off. I need to
check out more a rougher. Lucy James publishes games though over on our Fantasy
critic because she did pick this one up as are a last game, so
she's losing some points there. And meanwhile, Turbos of a lucky low penty
feet incorporated Jesus Christ, God, damn it, Sean God. Oh,
Jesus Christ, Sean he washed Sean in pleasure himself off the lowe on his
feet. Yeah. Anyways, he picked for Folm Stars as a counterpick on
Fantasy Critics, so he's going to get some points for it underperforming. Actually,
I don't. I don't know what Jesus did. I don't want to
speak for him, so maybe he did, Please don't. I counterpicks Power
World and that's like, it's only gonna get me a point. I'm like,
man, I thought that was such a good one, but not as
good as Foam Stars apparently, Well, so I saw that. That's uh,
sculling Bones counterpicks that we'll see. It's kind of like the third of
the three horsemen of the Apocalypse of life service games that are finally coming up
this year. Right, I don't know Phone Stars is on PlayStation Plus,
Right, that's the one. I think it's on PlayStation Plus. But okay,
either way, is it how how divers not on? Please? I
don't think how diverse is but okay, Phone Stars. Have you seen the
monetization for Foam Stars. It's bad, that's all I know. There's like,
you know, skins where it's like, oh, yeah, you know,
it's it's a cheerleader, and then the it's a clown. I don't
really know, but I looked at the prices and one outfit is forty five
dollars. Forty five dollars for one outfit skin. It's it's bizarre how out
of hand that's gotten just because it seems to not work. They must have
data, says otherwise. But like Mortal Kombat one just got absolutely beat up
for having cosmics that are too expensive, and yeah, you see do you
see the math? Right? That game's gonna sell ten million copies, and
if one percent monetized monetizes, that's like still a lot of people spending a
lot of money. Well maybe it was going to sell ten million copies,
but then when the you know, the news stories are early on about the
same monization people who are gonna buy that, it just kind of turns you
offer a it a bit where I don't know, I don't think Mortal Kombat
one's gonna sell as well as Bortal Kombat eleven. Yeah, it doesn't seem
like it. No, Yeah, it's it is very strange to see.
But I guess if you're one of these companies, maybe the thinking is start
high because you can always lower the prices, so you can't raise them,
So start at forty five dollars, and then when people freak out, go
down to twenty. But I think what you you just identified like the real
problem where it's like, now people are just gonna associate this with being a
ripoff, and they're gonna have a really negative feeling about it, and you're
gonna lose the battle immediately, and there's not gonna like it doesn't help that
you're not a very fun game. But even if you were, people were
like, there's a million other fun games I could be playing where I don't
feel as bad about the monetization. So you still have to compete with Fortnite.
You still have to compete with Fortnite? Yes, my god, And
yeah, it's it's it's strange. What's the This is the kind of game
Squenens was talking about when they said we're going to just focus on our big
games. Yes, uh huh. They're probably like why did why did we
make a film star? Right? Like, how do we get to this
point where we're putting out this This is almost certainly the thing where like starting
in April, we're gonna put this one out now, but in April we'll
start making good games and then see if Thieves is the one that's like seventy
dollars, what if do we have any idea what the monetization is like in
that it's probably not as bad as this, but I bet when you look
at it as a seven dollar game, it is probably just pretty rough.
Yeah, I'm not sure if the monization was turned on that open beta or
not. Tically, see if these skull and bones, everybody, it's just
gonna I want to do it too all the time, constantly. I'm a
broken man. It's just how it's going to be. Well, you expect
us to be able to handle two multiplayer pirate games, right, Come on,
at our age, I'm forty years old, all right. Moving on,
Switch to will reportedly feature a custom Nvidia chip. This is from Jordan
Midler at VGC. Nintendo's next console will will reportedly feature a custom Invidia chip
when it launches later this year. That's according to Reuter's, which is reporting
that the Japanese console giant will implement a custom in Vidia chip to power the
new console. According to a source with knowledge of Invidia's plans, in Vidia's
current Switch handheld console already includes in videos Techer x one chip, yet we
know that continues. A new version Ofintendo Switch console expected this year, is
likely include a custom in Nvidia design. That is the rumored T two thirty
nine chip. That's been like a lot of investigations gone on that and forms
of people who are obsessed with this kind of stuff. Reuter's tried to reach
out to Nintendo for comment, Nintendo obviously turned them down. It was previously
speculated that Nintendo would use an off the shelf chip for its next console.
However, if Reuter's report is accurate, that appears to not be the case.
Now. I had some questions about this, Mike, because I thought,
like in Nvidia Nintendo's terminology, the Tegra X one is a custom version
of the X one. I think the difference here, after asking around a
little bit to people online before before we went on the show, just to
see if I could come in with some clarification, is the while the X
one that is in the switch is a custom version of the X one,
the T two thirty nine that will go into the switch is custom from the
ground up. And that's the difference here. Now, that shouldn't be too
surprising. When the switch was announced and the Nvidia partnership was announced, they
said at the time, hey, this is the beginning of a twenty year
partnership. So clearly, while they might have been starting from like, all
right, let's see what we can piece together, as they got further down
the road, it's like, WHOA, Now we know we're going to be
in this marriage for a very long time. Let's just see if we can
come up something more custom that better fits your exact needs. And I think
that speaks that goes back to speak speaking to the backward compatibility thing. If
they're working this closely together on everything to the point where it's a custom design
from the ground up, they are going to try to find ways to solve
these problems. Well, it's probably gonna be a compatibility layer to get the
old games working. That is something they can almost probably bake into their hardware,
the software hardware like Fusion that Nvidia doesn't all it's GPUs, that's something
they could bring to bear on this as well. No, you're not much
of a hardware guy, Mike, but hey, Nvidia is still making custom
processors for Switch. How excited are you, buddy? I mean, I
think that's good news. I think something that's custom made for the purposes of
this device has got to work better than something slightly modified from off the shelf.
But man, it's crazy how much how much juice we got out of
that mobile chip for the Switch one, which at that time people were like,
this ain't all that powerful, even in like twenty seventeen, carry us
through to twenty twenty four. Somehow, I think it was in my Invidious
Shield, the over the top like box thing that they sold that came out
in twenty fourteen. So yeah, man, like a ten year old chip.
Now at this point, it's a great you know what they need this
new chip for? That might it's it's for a Metro Prime four because it's
going to be this really high end switched to exclusive. You might be onto
something. Starting to really feel like I'm gonna lose that, betimember? What
were the steaks? Was it? Just think it's gotta take me to Margaritaville
again. I'm gonna really break you over the colls on that menu. Get
a lot of shots, Get a lot of tequila shots for for Jimmy's gonna
be good. They all get emotional, start crying. You just got to
deal with it. Yeah, all right, well that sounds like a price
I'll have to pay. That. Reuters report also had some other like tidbits
in it. The one that stuck out to me is in Nvidia is going
to start making a lot more custom chips for its partners, and a listed
among those partners was Video Game Custom rs plural. Now we already know they're
gonna be working to Nintendo for a very long time. The rumors out there
are Microsoft's looking around. They're not necessarily going to go with AMD next time
in Vidio maybe powering the next Xbox. Does that sound like a possibility to
you? Maybe? And hey, if if Microsoft wants to make a handheld,
boy, sure would make sense to partner with from Vidia, who's already
helping switch with theirs. Mm hmm, It's definitely a very likely thing.
In Vidia hinted very strongly that they were going to be doing more custom chips,
like from the ground up for that would be able to serve all their
customers, including like data centers, which is like only a handful of companies
like broad Common, Marvel do that stuff right now. In Vidio is going
to try to take that stuff over. But in the process of building up
that that side of their company they could they'll have a lot of technology and
resources that would fit very well with doing that stuff for consoles going forward.
And you know, they were going to buy ARM and they decided not to
buy ARM mostly because of regulators, but also because they saw a future where
they could start making those things themselves without having to use ARMS technology, and
that could very easily power a future Xbox of some sort, maybe specifically a
handout or maybe the entire Xbox stack. Going forward, we'll see. Do
you think do you think this custom and video chip will help the new switch
like run a new Bridge Racer as a launch title potentially, Mike, I
mean, listen, you know I can't comment when the investigation is ongoing.
Okay, Yeah, I just wondering if you made some progress on that event.
I'm out there. I'm hitting the ground for you, buddy. Don't
worry. I thank you, appreciate it, all right, hit it.
Excuse me. Hideo Kojima on decision to develop Phisian't, which I just hate
that name, mikean Yeah, pissant, uh, he says. The reason
he did it is I realize that people die. This is from sal Ramano
at Kamatsu. Kojima Productions founder and CEO. Hideo Kojuma discussed how the decision
developed a recently announced action espionage game Phisi't with Sony Interactive Entertainment came about during
a special edition broadcast of Hideotube that aired today. I fell ill when twenty
twenty. Kachum explained. It was also during the pandemic, so I was
sick and isolated during all of it. I even had surgery, and I
thought I can't anymore. I was at my lowest and felt like I couldn't
go back to making games. I wrote a will too, and in that
moment I realized that people die. But I turned sixty last year, I'll
turn seventy and ten years. I hope to never retire. Having said that,
if the users desire it so much, I thought I should change my
priorities a bit. I still want to do new things, but I decided
to make an action action espionage game. So basically he realized his ownmortality.
And the thing he decided he wanted to do is make one more for the
Metal Gear fans, which I think is a bleak thing to say about life.
But hey, more powerfure. Yeah, look, that's all fine whatever.
I get concern how much he keeps talking, he keeps pulling out that
makes something like a movie line. He I think he even recently said,
like, when your mom walks in, she's gonna think you're watching a movie,
which might which, trust me, my mom did that like like twenty
years ago. And also, how old do you think your target audience says?
I mean, I know some of them are living at their mom still
maybe, but what are we talking about? I guess. Also like,
uh, I don't know my favorite Metal Gear Solid games like one, uh
you know even five? Five? Right? Five was kind of lighter on
the story stuff he's talked about. Yeah, Mickey Mulger saw, which means
it's gonna be more like a movie than ever. I'm like, no,
just make a good stuff action game, like don't don't make another Muger Saalid
four, make another Medal Gear Solid or Mulgar said five. It's like a
little bit annoying too, because he's legit just making movies now, right,
Like he's got multiple movie partnerships where they're like he's involved in actually just making
films based on death stranding. He was at where was that, like Warner
wherever was when he was doing the Tony Chlobby. Picture's right, it would
be Sony right. So it's like, hey, just go make a movie
and also make a video game. You could do both. You don't have
to do it all in one. Obviously. It is like, you're right,
the most iroly thing to say. Still, in twenty twenty four,
we're finally going to bring together movies and video games, something that he is
literally credited with doing in nineteen ninety seven. Whenever nineteen ninety eight, whenever
Meddle Gear Solid came out. We don't need to be doing that anymore.
And yet I say that those games sell very well. Whenever you like,
people are like, this is like a movie. People do seem to want
that, so and maybe it's just our taste, Like I don't know,
yeah, and yeah, I'm sure this could be very good. Do you
think there's any chance this is actually a Malgar Solid game? And he's throwing
another phantom pain loop at us this time he's just for reels. Never say
never, but it's like a like a point five percent chance, like one
out of two hundred, one out of three hundred, that this is them
making up. And he and they're like, I could just make a Mettal
Gear Solid for us. You know that relationship really did disintegrate in a really
rough way. Uh. And to know that that's the case, all you
got to look is like how Jeff Kewley treats Konami. He was like,
you've hurt my friends feelings. Fuck you, So probably not. They're probably
never gonna work together again. And if they do, I think it'll take
a little bit more time. Like he'll do this game and then he'll sign
off on some middle gear thing in the future when they have new leadership over
there or something like that. But for now still no. Yeah, there
was got that. There was like those rumors that what he was really sick
of working on was a Silent Hill game. But that was all that crazy
person over that other story. Oh that thing, Yeah, remember the name
or something? Yes, yeah, Hey, what are the odds that Hideo
Kojima is the first person to actually not die? Oh that's pretty good,
right, Like because he's scanning, He's got like all the scanning technology down
and he's probably thinking about ways to scan the brain. He probably has already
started scanning. The said this quote is I realized that people people die,
that I'm going to die. Yeah, so really likely that he will be
the first one to not die and shout out to our new overlord Kochum.
Good for him. Hell Divers two passes one hundred fifty thousand players on Steam.
This is from Alex Hopley at Game Reactor Hell Divers to current players.
Yes, yes, we got some details about like how it's sold over well.
Hell Divers two is the surprise hit of the month. By the looks
of things. The sci fi bug killing Bonanza has been destroying previous Sony records
on PC, and it seems that trend has continued over the weekend since its
release. Right now, the current peak player count for hell Divers two since
at one hundred fifty five nine hundred twenty six. This feats out God of
War's PC player count by over eighty thousand, which is pretty impressive considering Hell
Divers wasn't exactly the biggest franchise going into the release. According to Arrowhead Games
CEO Aerowhead Games Studio CEO as well, Hell Divers two has apparently sold around
a million copies. He's not sure why Sony hasn't yet shared the success of
the game, but it's clear from the numbers we could see that is doing
well. That CEO said that it's doing well beyond the projections what they expected
the game to do. So I already sold a million copies. That's hey,
this game makes a lot of sense to me on Steam. It's the
kind of thing that I think PC players really get on board with, where
it's like, hey, a multiplayer game where anything can happen and it's all
about telling the stories of We went out there and you know, we someone
turned their gun to unsafe and no one knew what that meant, and then
he charged it up and exploded and killed the entire team. And it's like
that, Yeah, people eat that stuff up, So I'm not too surprised
it's doing well. But it's just nice to see. Obviously they have some
problems. That's that's the next story. But Hell Divers two feels like,
yeah, this should be the kinds of games that people are going gaga for.
I don't know, how do you feel? I mean, I had
a ton of funnel. You're playing it on Friday. I've already basically made
my brothers pick it up so that I can play it with them. It's
funny because like sci fi doesn't seem like, oh, it's a sci fi
game, that'll be fresh. Yeah, it feels really fresh in a lot
of ways. Uh. Part of it, Yeah, it was doing what
the first Hell Divers did a while ago. Of course, it is something
about seeing that into more kind of pristine package, right. I was like,
oh, before, yeah, that did feel like some niche PC game,
and you know, who cares. It's a gaming is still play forever
and have a ton of fun with. But there's something impressive about seeing that
translated to this you know, kind of more there, I say, triple
A package, yep, and it's they really nailed, uh the sense of
danger from the first Hell Divers, and they just kept amplifying it and a
lot again, a lot of the stuff is present in that first game,
like you said, but just kind of going in there and figuring things out
yourself, like that's been something I think a lot of developers have been realizing
most players want that in one one way or the other, and it's probably
a difficult thing to pull off, like, hey, how do we do
that without feeling like hostile towards the player? And Hell Divers too is like,
you know what, let's just make that the language of the game.
Everything is hostile. The you know, the environments you're going into are obviously
hostile, but like what if you worked for a military organization that couched its
hostility in uh oh, we're speaking to democracy and it's all propaganda. That
doesn't that like make all that stuff make more sense? And obviously it just
hits so hard for me. I'm a huge Starship Troopers mark that movie.
I think it's perfect. They're obviously just trying to replicate that here, and
what a good idea. It's a really good fit for the gameplay mechanics that
make this game so much fun. So just just really really and I doubt
what they're doing here. And I know we've been skeptical of Sony's kind of
whole live service plan, but like, hey, here's map. Did they
already have a hit with one of the kind of first ones of these that
they really released with that whole initiative, That's it'd be a good sign for
them, absolutely, And if they can spot like winners like this, not
everyone needs. I mean, you know they partner with Square Nigs on Phone
Stars. Yeah, okay, that's fine. We know not all these are
gonna work, and some of them are going to be bad. That's fine.
So as long as we get a couple of these, most people be
I think, like, hey, no one's complaining about the live service aspect
of Hell Diver. Well I should say no. People are complaining a little
bit about pay to win stuff, which I'm not engaged with too much.
The developers out there trying to defend it saying hey, I'm trying, we
don't think it's pay to win, and we tried to really walk that line
of like putting cool stuff that people can unlock, but not make it so
it destroys the balance of the game, and that's going to be up to
people to decide for themselves. But these games are going to try to find
ways to make money in an ongoing way. That is the whole point here,
and if they can make a good game in the process, that's going
to go a long way towards covering up anto of the other problems with that,
And most people will find a safe point in between, like, hey,
this is a live service game. I don't like those, and oh,
this is so much fun. I want to be playing this, and
like, you know what, I'll go in there with my friends. We'll
play together, and if one of my friends starts paying money to unlock stuff,
we'll either deal with that or will happily just follow them into battle and
hope it will just go play on the extreme difficulty where that stuff is almost
certainly not going to help you overcome the challenges involved there. So yeah,
because it's not like it's a competitive game, So I mean, the pay
to win stuff is only going to go so far for me. Yeah,
I don't know. Yeah, it probably doesn't matter too much to me.
I am a little surprised whenever these kind of games have, you know,
the things you can buy that aren't just cosmetics or cosmetic adjacent right, what
is what is the thing that people are buying that is like some weapons?
I think it's weapons, some ordidence, Yeah, some stuff like that,
Yeah, probably which, Yeah, that's it's a. It's a. It's
definitely a little strange. There's definitely like stuff like in other games like XP
boosters, you see that, and games where it's like not competitive and that's
like, this is just strange. But the solution, I think for most
most most part is like play with friends that aren't going to buy that stuff
if you don't want to deal with that stuff, and then it's completely avoidable
avoided, Like you're not playing online against other people, So just play with
people you want to play with and it will be fine. Hell Divers two
dev explains server expansion following extreme login issues. So while this game is something
I've had a lot of fun with, it has had a lot of problems
when it launched, and this story from gill Up gel Kokovic from Destructoid explains
the story here it would appear that the studio behind hell Divers two, Arrowhead,
didn't quite anticipate the massive surge in popularity the game received following its February
eighth release date, with an all time steampeak of over one hundred and fifty
five thousand concurrent players, Hell Divers two servers simply couldn't hold on top of
the usual suite of airrors. Helldivers twos two throws out when there's something amiss.
Something even worse cropped up last Sunday of February eleventh. Notably, Hell
Divers two's servers straight up died, and it didn't take long for Arrowhead Studios
to respond. On the game's official discord server, Arrowhead explained that there were
too many players trying to join the galactic combat efforts at the same time.
To speak in technical terms, Arrowhead Studio CEO Johann Pilstett said, our services
as well as our partner services, have a rate limit or that denies connections
beyond a volume perent per minute to prevent the entire system from failing. There
were such a glut of players hoping to duke it out with the interstellar bugs
and cyborgs on PC and PS five that hell Divers two began throwing out server
airs left and right, and that part's not the quote. Back to the
quote, we managed to increase the rate limit from ten thousand per minute to
twenty thousand per minute, and the total capacity of concurrent players was increased from
two hundred and fifty thousand total to three hundred and sixty thousand total on and
then this is no longer the quote on its own. That sounds like a
promising that substantial server capacity increased, but pill Stitt explained that it wasn't enough.
This was, however, still not enough, as the player count jumped
to three hundred and sixty thousand after five and a half minutes, So between
PlayStation and PC it has three hundred and sixty thousand people, and that's only
because that's how many could service at any one time. Clearly more people were
trying to play it at that moment. So extremely successful, and this is
an example of them just not being able to predict the demand. Again,
we talked about it sold a million copies and that's way about beyond their projections.
Clearly they weren't expecting this kind of success so far. Though over the
weekend it seems like it's performed better and they've been able to address many of
these issues. So it's like, hey, the kind of one of those
a situations where hey, the bad news is good news because so many people
are trying to play your game. That's why it failed. Deal with that.
Let's get past that. And those people seem like they're going to keep
coming back, right, Yeah, I know exactly. It's you know,
it's a problem, but it's one of the better problems that you can have.
It can maybe be frustrated with people and you're worried about them getting so
frustrated that maybe they don't come back. But people do have to buy this
game, right, so they are committed and they aren't going to be preps
turned away that easily, except maybe on Steam where you can get a refund
easily, I suppose, but I imagine that's a pretty small percentage of buyers.
Yeah, the CEO didn't mention, He's like, hey, thanks for
people who haven't refunded, for sticking with us. We're going to do our
best to get the game up and running as best as it possibly can.
Hell Divers two is how much is this game? Is it? People were
saying that that one film Star skin you're talking about is more expensive than how
Divers too, So that's right. Yes, this game is forty dollars so
yeah, yeah, and it has you know, as a twenty dollars like
DLC and stuff like that that unlocks a ton of extra things. So already,
like their DLC for this game is half the price of one of those
skin packs. It's it's making a lot of other games look pretty silly right
now. And I think if if you are out there trying to make a
game that is going to win over an audience that wants to come back and
play a live service thing, this is showing the path to do it right,
and games like Film Stars are clearly beefing it. You know, get
people into your game first and then maybe worry about money. Yeah, it
seems like a good strategy, all right, Mikey, I have a poll
question from last week. Let's get to that real quick here. Do you
think GTA six comes to switch to? Sixty four percent say never, thirty
percent say eventually, but not right away, and six percent say switch to
will will be a launch platform for GTA six, So we'll see most people
though, think it'll never come to switch to. I'm a little surprised that
many people think it will never come to switch to. Uh, you know,
I understand why GTA five never did. I mean, I wonder if
these people think that GTA five is going to come to the switch to,
right, I mean, yeah, that's thing, that's something where it's like,
well the hell not. But I guess maybe GT six is asking a
lot. I don't know how scalable that game can be, just how much
scaling would have to happen there, I guess, I mean to the wider
point there, How do you think the third party fortunes will change for the
switch too? Do you think it'll get significantly more third party support than the
Switch did usually at first? Right? I think there'll be a lot of
people excited to port some of their older games from the last generation or so
onto there. I don't know how many day and date releases, right,
that's the dream. I suppose that we're gonna get to a point where,
you know, like a like Assassin's Creed Red just comes out on twitch to
at the same time it comes on everything else. I don't know if we're
gonna get quite there, all right, I got another poll question that we
will put up here in a second while we get that ready, Mikey,
why don't you tell people where they can find you and what you have going
on on the internet and all that good stuff. Yeah. Check out games
Beat, we're managing editor. I'm on Twitter and Twitch has to Toe.
Check out the nineties Disney podcast, which I do of my brothers. We're
trying to become more Kana influencers, Jeff. Yeah, we're gonna We're gonna
make that. Ha. It's gonna be great. They be. They announced
some more tail Spin cards over this weekend. So they're gonna get Rebecca eventually,
I think, and then I'm gonna get jammed. He's done. U.
Rebecca is not gadget right, No, No, Rebecca's She's like she's
a bear, but like a sexy bear, and she's a mommy too.
Okay. Yeah, they're playing a lot of a lot of bossy, kind
of bossy, so I see what chance into it. I'm just saying I've
been playing a lot more like a dragon, and eventually a character becomes a
mommy dummy like, and one of her moves is she knocks you to the
ground, she grabs you by the ankles, she sticks her heels into your
crotch and then electrocutes your balls and it's Yeah, it's a good video game.
Everybody. You should be playing it. That would be incredible. That
was just the name of the job, Mommy, it's the name of the
job is Dominatrix. So like that. Well yeah it is just that,
okay cool? Yeah, well, night queen. That's right, night queen.
But yes, all the kumar around it is just Dominatrix stuff. Night
Queen. Yeah, yeah, it's real. That's a real video game,
right there. Yeah, I wish I could be playing it someday, someday.
All right. New poll question, how do you think backward compatibility will
work on the switch to your options are going to be It won't work at
all. It will generally require users to pay for an upgrade, It will
work for every game, but they won't run better. And finally, it
will work for every game and they will run better. Help people don't get
too granular about run better, like, yeah, maybe lot times will be
a couple of seconds faster. I don't know, but yeah better, yeah,
yeah, exactly. Mike's right, all right, we'll get to that
on the show on Wednesday. On Game This morning's here on Giant Bomb.
Speaking of Giant Bomb, Tomorrow we will have the Giant Bomb Cast. Tune
in for that podcast, looking forward to that one, getting back into the
of things, and then for the rest of the week we'll have a lot
of our normal shows, Blake Club. We'll be back on Wednesday, right
Mike, Yes, Yes, Mike mcquanchie is in the Fire Temple. Now,
do you think I need to go back to the Earth Temple at some
point and like do it legitimately? We kind of you steered me into using
a shortcut. I don't know. Yeah, I don't think you need to,
but I mean maybe for fun and when we get done, if you
want to like check it out or something like you or like a be like
club. But yeah, Chat's saying no, no, you definitely don't need
to. No, absolutely not, not when we like established that like shortcuts
are okay and Dan's run of Sonic the Hedge, Yeah, I guess precedents.
What's messed up is now because like we did that shortcut. I'm like,
