Speaker 1: Welcome in to the Central Kentucky Select toy Oda Dealer's postgame show. Drew Franklin here filling in for Matt Jones on night one of Kentucky Basketball's twenty five twenty six season. I'm in the downtown Lexington studio with our dear friend Billy R. Sports, who just loves sitting in the studio during games. Billy, you've been here all day and it's so good to see you looking well, rested, energized over there.

Speaker 1: It's good to be here. I was at the game, did the rapid reaction on the side walk White walked right down to the studio after Kentucky handled its business against Nichols the Colonels, not Nichols State. We're just going Nichols Billy seventy seven fifty one, not only the first game of the season, but the first game of the bb and United tip Off Classic presented by Kentucky Tourism. If I'm the only person that's gonna get excited about that, that's fine, But I'm gonna keep pushing that message because it's a big four team, three game, multi team event to start the season, and Kentucky got it started by beating Nichols seventy seven to fifty one. It was a tale of two halves, and that's that's putting it lightly. First half a brutal run for the Wildcats. Second half they got it going and pulled away late. We're going to be here for the next hour breaking down that game, the highs, the lows. We want to hear from you eight five nine, tweto two to eight seven call us throughout the night. I want to hear your favorite moments of the game, not favorite moments of the game, concerns moving forward, predictions for the season. Maybe you were there, you can talk about the crowd. Wasn't the crowd's best effort, but it was a good start to the season, Kentucky getting the win. I will say before we go on and get into the basketball, I have to ad mention the tragic accident that happened in Louisville shortly before the game tipped off. A UPS cargo plane crashed. Just a horrific scene with videos and photos going around. I think Billy, and you can correct me. You've been here getting the news. I've been at RUP. But at least four people were killed, eleven injured. Three actually three people, excuse me, I've seen so oh three, three okay, but three eleven injured. It was an MD eleven aircraft heading for Honolulus was packed with a ton of fuel. Just an unbelievable scene there. So we're thinking about everyone, praying for everyone involved with this tragedy. News is still coming. Did you say that they didn't carry the game. They're basically just doing.

Speaker 2: News whas we were doing a lot of news updates, keeping people abreast. So, you know, thinking about everybody involved, and you know the images are striking out of that.

Speaker 1: So wishing the best, yes, And I just I had to mention that before we get into a fun night at basketball as Kentucky got that win, because just a tragic situation in Louisville. And more will be coming out on that throughout the night as they continue the investigation going. But that's what we know for now. When to acknowledge it and send our thoughts and prayers out to everyone there. There's not a good way to transition into basketball, So I'll just do it again. Kentucky got the win, beating Nichols seventy seven to fifty one in Rapperina. Billy I would love to skip the first half and just get into when it really got fun. But we should acknowledge that the first twenty minute was not the best basketball we've ever seen played from either side. We had a twenty eight to fifteen halftime score. There were people online who had struggled to find ESPN. We all know that situation to night, and at halftime they were wishing they had never found it. It was so ugly. Kentucky shot two of sixteen from three and thirty two percent from the field. Felt like it was zero zero for several minutes early in the game. You get to that twenty eight to fifteen score at halftime, but it just looked brutal offensively to start, Aberdeen played but did not start out start out. They went with Chandler, O Way, Trent, Noah, Modia, Batte and Brandy Garrison, the same five that started against Georgetown and lost. We saw pretty quickly what it's like not having Aberdeen and Low. There's just no flow in the offense. Colin Chandler, who had a great night, and I can't wait to get to that later on. Early on, the ball just kept getting stuck. Pope kinda doesn't kind of. He loves the space and pace offense, a lot of reading and reacting. And in that first half at least, what I saw just a lot of dudes looking at each other and chucking up threes. And as I mentioned, the threes weren't going in two for sixteen Billy.

Speaker 2: Yeah, And according to Goose on the radio broadcast, a lot of dribbling, no communication on defense, even though they held them to what only was it fifteen points in the first half, which the low ever was eleven and Mark Pope was gunning for that one. But I mean, what were your thoughts after that first halfter?

Speaker 1: I guess what, It wasn't all bad because defensively, even though I don't think Nichols is very good, they shot one for fourteen from three and some of those were open. But you have to give Kentucky credit for holding them. They shot twelve percent from the field. Nichols did wow, and a lot of that was Kentucky force into bad shots. Ye again, they missed some open looks, but overall Kentucky did play well, defensively, a huge step forward from the Georgetown game where those guards were getting whatever they wanted on Chandler, especially especially my guy. You take a step down in competition tonight and Nichols just couldn't get anything on that defense. But it wasn't I can't compliment the defense when the offense was as poor as it looked in that first half.

Speaker 2: Yeah, it was bad. It was really bad. I mean a little concerning, especially for the first game. But you mentioned it. It shows you how valuable a good point guard is. And when Aberdeen was at the one in the second half and Colin moved to the two, I mean drew its and a good night for the Colin Chandler fan club to be hosting the postgame show tonight.

Speaker 1: Yeah, I didn't want to jump straight into that dunk. I'm still gonna wait a couple minutes, okay, before I popped the champagne in here on that. But you mentioned Aberdeen in the second half. He got a lot more minutes played with otega Oway in the second half, which I thought was important. He was limited in the first half as Pope eased him in, but you didn't see him get a lot of run with that first group. I thought when Chandler played a little more off the ball and Aberdeen got some run at point guard in the second half, the offense looked much better. Pope even said that he acknowledged that Chandler, his natural position is the two plays much better that way and he's having to go above and beyond. But Aberdeen he had six assists, zero turnovers. Pope said, that's his great, his best assistant turnover ratio of his career. It helped Chandler get going because Chandler did not have a great first half, but he turned it on with four for four in the second half. Three of those were three pointers. And then, of course, an early nominee for Dunk of the Year came late in the game. Chandler drives the lane, Billy, he cocked that back. I knew he had some hops. I knew he had some bunnies, but the cock it back like that. That's an NBA dunk, and he caught a body from the Nichols player. And just as good as the dunk was, the team reactions were even better. Otega Oway is standing in the corner and he covers his eyes when Chandler plants his feet to jump on the sideline. I believe it was Cam Williams who ends up just completely flat on the ground, laying down. Rupperena exploded, without question the highlight of the night as Colin Chandler punches in his fourteen and fifteenth point there point which led the team high score.

Speaker 2: That's gotta be the best part of those posterizing dunks, not only the reaction of the teammates, but the other team when they're reacting like that, you know, it was a great dunk and and man Colin was just building that confidence. He finally hit a couple of shots, and then from him to get that dunk. I mean, it really could be the catalyst of for a good year for Colin.

Speaker 1: I was worried about the fan club in the first half. Other than playing some decent defense, he was not looking good. As I said, no one was looking good channeling the first half went one for four from three mentioned went three for three in the second half, But I was I was worried about the fan club there a little bit. I had a flash Celle going on. After the Georgetown game. I mentioned on the pregame show, you can bundle your Colin Chandler Fan Club subscription with ESPN Unlimited. At halftime, people in Rapparina were patting me on the back, saying, it's gonna get better, and you know what, Billy, it's sure to get it.

Speaker 2: Sure did get better, but you're right. It felt like he's take the He took the first couple shots of the game and they weren't getting close. So happy for him building that confidence. Happy for the young guys still playing well. Jasper Johnson had some moments when they were trying to find a bucket.

Speaker 1: I thought that that number was way too big anyway. Also, Kentucky's team total the over under was ninety five. Mother high goodness, not even close to that, and I didn't bet it, but I wouldn't have thought on a good night they'd get to ninety five with the limited roster. But still big second half. First half, as I mentioned, not good the starters. Otega Oway was one for five, Trent Noah over Modiya Bote. I believe one for three. Trent Noah a big piece of news there. He rolled an ankle in the first half looked pretty bad. Stayed down for a couple of minutes. Billy I was there. You could have heard a pin drop in Repperina while he was over there on the baseline, he's kind of in a crowd by the camera crew. You don't get a good luck look. He hobbles off the court. But at halftime, I don't know what they've said on the broadcast or what Pope's bit said specifically, but he was a full participant in shoot around at halftime. They just didn't end up playing in the second half. So doesn't seem like that'll be a lingering issue, even though that was a scare there early on.

Speaker 2: Well, you may have been walking to the studio here, but you may have missed Pope saying that Trent Noah is a liar on the liar several times in the locker room, because Trent was like, Yeah, I'm ready to go, I don't feel any pain. Put me back in, coach, and he knew that was Trent just trying to get back in there. You know, high expectations for him this year. He struggled in the last exhibition game. You'd hope he'd get a couple see a couple fall. It was good that it happened to Colin Chandler, but Trent's next and hopefully Kentucky can avoid that injury. Bug.

Speaker 1: Yeah, there was a moment where we just thought, no, not another one, because we all know how last year went completely ran out of point guards. You've got low sitting out there, and got Quaint sitting there. Aberdeen ended up playing but didn't start. Missed the Georgetown game, so I thought, surely not one more, especially in the first game of the year and a fan favorite Trent Noah, but it looks like he'll be okay still when he was in zero for two from three. He and Cam Williams, they're supposed to be the shooters. Billy, how much do we need to worry about the shooting on this team second half? Even out the percentage seven for twenty seven in the game, which still isn't good, but Trent Noah not hitting his and Cam Williams I had an ugly night from three. Cam Williams did get a nice two handed dunk in traffic, but other than that, I'd be really worried and worried about him moving forward twenty minutes and didn't offer a lot outside of that dunk, those guys have got to get going because when this team's not hitting threes, that's why everything clogs up, as we saw in that first half.

Speaker 2: And Goose was begging for one of those guys, one of their shots to fall, because as soon as you see one, it's gonna be like Chandler, You're gonna get that confidence and you'll be a different player. But Mark Pope after the game said that he doesn't even worry about guys missing shots. He's worried about the amount of shots they're getting up. He's still not satisfied as they didn't get over the thirty mark when it comes to three pointers. So I don't know, maybe it's early, but I am a little concerned early on.

Speaker 1: Yeah, and I know Pope wants them to get to thirty, but when they were two for sixteen at halftime, I wanted them to take zero threes at that point, I did not want to see anymore. That even out, but I'm still worried about the free throw shooting. Yeah, even out that will. This has now been both preseason games and the first game of the season where Kentucky is not shot well. What they finished tonight, it looks like twelve of twenty two.

Speaker 1: That's even worse than I remembered. Oway and Jasper Johnson went four for five, so that says a lot about the rest of the group.

Speaker 2: And you miss one of two. That just kills a lot of momentum, I mean, and it gets in the guys's head, especially you saw that in the first half. I could not believe the first half score was twenty eight to fifteen, but Drew we made it out.

Speaker 1: On the other side, Pope was proud of the fifteen. I didn't know, but that was pushing a record for the lowest halftime score by an opponent, so they flirated with that. On the free throws, malacom mareno pretty big culprit there, one for six, But otherwise I thought Malachi had a pretty good game. Got close to double digit rebounding, had some nice passes, finished a couple of dunks in there. So the Kentucky Boys. Not a perfect night, but he and Jasper did some good things. Noah was limited, but I liked what we're seeing from Malacamrino, Brandon Garrison still Brandon Garrison had a decent night, took a three, didn't need to take contested three with like three seconds into the shot clock. I like, until we get quaintance. I like, what we're seeing is Marino pushing Garrison for those minutes because he's right on his heels.

Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm worried about Brandon Garrison in his playing time. I mean, he was playing point guard. It felt like for the first ten minutes of the game, dribbling up and doing some passing. And you know, that's a guy that if he doesn't start playing well quickly, he's going to see a lot of minutes lost to Moreno and then JQ when he gets back. But we'll see. I mean, he's somebody that was in Pope's system last year, so you expect some improvement, but definitely a concern early on.

Speaker 1: And I mentioned Aberdeen six to zero turnover assistant turnover ratio, which is great. Kentucky has a team improved Georgetown. They had more turnovers than assists, and that was one of the biggest things I was looking for in this game. I had five notes of things to watch for. Maybe I'll go over those as the show goes on, but one of them was the assist in turnovers twenty one assists tonight thirteen turnovers. Much better improvement from the Georgetown game last week. Offense still has plenty of room to grow, and that will happen when Low gets back, but they cleaned that up a little bit, led by Aberdeen getting in there and running the show. He had a great no look pass for one of those Marino Dolts in the second half.

Speaker 2: Yep, that ball movement got a lot better. And uh, I mean we've seen this story before. When Pope doesn't have a point guard, it can be a real struggle, and uh, after that second half with Aberdeen, it just shows even more.

Speaker 1: It exploded And I feel like on the way out everyone felt like they needed to come up and give me a high five because I've been so adamant about Colin Chandler and even though it was a slow start to the season and he still has a lot of growing to do, We're not perfect. I acknowledge that that dunk right there, That's what I'm talking about THENDI can not A lot of people can do that, Billy. That is what I see in Colin Chandler that we just got to get dialed in in the right position, get that roster back and let him focus on doing things.

Speaker 1: Well, kids get in line, because he's my favorite player and I had him first. But there's plenty of room on the bandwagon. One other note before we get to these calls. I mentioned how poorly Kentucky shot in the first half and Nichols that combined one for fourteen and two for sixteen. What is that three for thirty combined in the first half. I thought something might be wrong with the Rims because there's no reason two college team should shoot three for thirty. But there wasn't something wrong with the Rims because during a time out, a guy named jareded walked on to the court and hit the ten thousand dollars half co shot. So, as I'm watching Chandler and O Way, Williams No and the boys not hit shots, random student I think from the crowd just walks in in the first Central Bank ten K shot of the year. He busted.

We're very, very very high up in the top corner and we look to our left, me, Jack Pilgrim, Zach Gagan, Jake Polchak, the whole KSR Crew, Stephen Peak, and there's Dennis Johnson, Jasper Johnson's dad in the very top row of Reparina in the end zone that they don't even bother seating for games like this. I mean, there are barely any people in that entire area. We're talking two or three full sections. It's pretty empty. And Jasper Johnson's dad has his back against the wall in front of him. You'd have to go down ten or fifteen rows to find another human. And that is how he watched Jasper play his first game. Dennis couldn't be at the two preseason games because he's Woodford High School coach they had games, couldn't be there in person. He finally gets to go see Jasper playing RUP and he chose to sit in the absolute worst seat. But I gotta admit, kind of like a guy who knows the situation, there are parents, you know, I have family. I know people dad, mom can't sit together. Just gets a little too intense so they space out. But I've never seen a parent actually choose the worst seat in the building. But it looks like that's what Dennis Johnson's gonna do this season.

He didn't play basketball for a long time, like he picked it up as like a junior in high school or something. He's been playing basketball forever, but that year away I think took a lot of his growth away, and he just needs to be graded a little differently and you don't have to throw him away as early as a lot of people wanted to last year, and not the same circumstances, but similar in how they haven't had a basketball in their hands at every moment. As most of the players we see come in, I like.

Like our callers said, that's that's a big stretch. We might put that up a poster up in the fan club headquarters for for a dream. But I do think he has some some unique athleticism for two guards.
